Résumé :
Historic walled cities are recognized with its context and urban environment and old cities are associated with specific places, personalities and events, identifying their architectural values and rituals. The core objective of this research is the identification and protection of historic areas outside the city walls maintaining the legitimacy of historic environment. One of the remarkable example is historic city of Lahore with its neighborhood districts. Various type of observatory surveys has been conducted to visualize the impacts of urbanization on the historic environment of the selected case study “Chah Miran” which was populated due to a saint Hazrat Miran Hussain Zanjani and is termed as Land of Miran. Selected area is one of the oldest neighborhood districts of Mughal Lahore and the most significant landmarks are “Khui Miran” and “Shrine of Hazrat Miran Hussain Zanjani”. Rapid urbanization changed the historic urban landscape and provision of modern needs created jumble of shops due to the increasing commercial activities. In the result of these interventions, traditional activities transformed in the commercial activities. There is a need to identify and conserve the historic monuments in these historic districts for the study of future generations being part of the historic core of Lahore. Keywords: Urban activities, Neighborhood districts, Historic environment, Chah Miran, Miran Hussain Zanjani.

Résumé :
The types of historical shops of St. Petersburg are considered. Prototypes of the first small stores have been identified. The main periods of their development are investigated and the differences from other similar types of commercial buildings (department stores and markets) are indicated. The classification of historical stores has been developed in several directions: specialization (grocery, shoe and clothing stores, etc.), space-planning organization (individual buildings, shop windows, units of blocked buildings) and style directions (eclecticism, modernism, neoclassicism). Based on the developed classifications, options for modern adaptation and use are considered. The main problems of the modern existence of stores and the ways to solve them are identified. Domestic and foreign experience of adaptation is considered and analyzed. Examples of the most interesting and varied solutions for the modern use of historic stores are given. Conclusions are made about the relevance of the use of the buildings and premises under consideration. The main approaches to the renovation of stores have been developed, taking into account the object of conservation (the interior of the store, its specialization, the facade, the nature of the window decoration, their various combinations, the complex formation of the appearance of the shopping street). Recommendations are given on the selection of a modern function depending on the type of object. The historical and cultural value of historical stores of various types and the need for their preservation are proved.

Résumé :
The article is a fragment of the author’s more extensive study The museum shop. Its role and significance in modern museum, written as a student of the Postgraduate Museum Studies at the University of Warsaw. Based on interviews and both questionnaire and visual surveys, it presents issues pertaining to the location of museum shops within the museum’s premises, correlation between the shop’s assortment on offer and the museum’s programme, as well as the awareness of museum executive managers as to the versatility of such shops’ potential. In many cases the museum shops are being neglected which shows in their underinvestment, lack of care, unattractive offer and unfriendly spatial arrangement. It is hard to understand such approach especially that shops are in most cases the final accent of a visit to the museum. The author underlined the significance of projects intending to modernise the spatial arrangement of museum shops. They envisage the transformation of a shop into a space for the pleasant pastime, relaxation to release a museum fatigue; an opportunity to see and purchase publications giving a deeper insight into just visited expositions. In conclusion, the author points to the abundance of interdisciplinary research which may and should include the subject of museum shop. She draws attention to issues concerning, inter alia: selection and competence of shop personnel, placement within an organisational structure, cooperation with lessees, stock replenishment and budgeting of the shop. Furthermore, the scope of the conducted research included the adaptation of both historic and modern interiors for museum shop purposes, furnishings (interior design, furniture, lighting), presence of exclusive items appreciated by connoisseurs, marketing, promotion, as well as the use of new media in the image- -building of the shop.

Résumé :
Mexico City and Lima both have great cultural and historical value as they developed close to major pre-Columbian civilizations. When comparing their urban attractiveness factors, they present differences and similarities that need to be understood at a theoretical level. The study has practical implications as tourism officials and managers in each of these two cities can draw inspiration from the best practices of the other city. The method is quantitative, and the exploratory factorial analysis technique was used to reduce the variables in a group of factors. The results indicate that the different aspects of the cities’ tourism attractiveness can be categorized into four factors: the nucleus, the tourist ecosystem, MICE & shows, and related services. A comparison of the two cities’ Kruskal–Wallis test scores shows significant differences in terms of three variables: monuments and historic sites, museums and art galleries, and shops and commercial services.

Résumé :
Changes in consumer shopping behavior and in retail spaces, such as shopping malls, department stores and e-commerce, have modified localization models of traditional retail shops, also affecting urban fabric and spatial distribution of urban rent. Even city centers have undergone significant transformations or even decline, especially if local economic system and real estate market are weak and recessionary. A significant amount of commercial properties may have long vacancy due to excess supply, since many traditional shops close their business because they are no longer competitive and, moreover, there is no immediate takeover by new tenants. The decline of central urban areas depends on the interaction of multiple economic, social and cultural factors, but it can be countered by urban policies oriented not only to physical redevelopment of urban fabric, but also to social cohesion and multiculturalism. Migrants bearers of varied cultural values, coming from different continents and settling permanently in the Italian cities, have rented some of these empty properties by locating retail shops specifically oriented to their own communities or also to the citizens needs. The presence of migrants contributes, indeed, to support the retail real estate demand, to mitigate the minus-valorization of real estate capital and also to contain the revenues contraction. This phenomenon has been analyzed in some streets of the historic centre of Palermo that are traditionally shopping areas and have become the privileged place for locating retail shops managed by immigrants.

Résumé :
The home of America's first university, its first public school, and its first public library, the Boston area now hosts more than two hundred thousand students. From 1630, when John Winthrop said Boston should be “a city on a hill,” through the McGuffey readers of the nineteenth century, the city has been a beacon of learning. Its politics have been long and colorful: Massachusetts boasts the oldest continuously used, written Constitution in the world, John Adams's 1780 state constitution; the gerrymander was named after Governor Elbridge Gerry's plan for redrawing North Shore districts; the early years of this century saw fierce Yankee-Irish battles for the State House. Massachusetts produced and remains transfixed by the Kennedys, was the only state to vote for George McGovern, and has another interesting gubernatorial race this year. (Keep an eye peeled for people standing with election signs at busy intersections, a local political tradition.) In short, Boston holds much allure for the political scientist. For the tourist, too, Boston is an appealing destination. It is a compact city and, in the words of the old travel cliché, a city best appreciated on foot (or by public transportation). Most sites of interest in the historic downtown and nearby nineteenth-century neighborhoods are within walking distance of each other. There are restaurants, shops, book-stores, and a certain European vitality of city life—perhaps the result of narrow streets and ample green space. For walkers, the Freedom Trail organizes most of the major Revolution-era sites, and plenty of other spots are marked in the historic core. The same history, though, means Boston's streets were laid out on seventeenth-century cowpaths.

Résumé :
This thesis project was instigated by the interest to remodel a historic building in downtown Bogota, Colombia, South America. The Bavaria Brewery, the first and oldest beer producer in the country, will be transformed into a retail/recreational facility composed of small-stores, restaurants and a museum. The red-brick structure was designed in 1891 by Alejandro Manrique, to resemble a German brewery. As this brewery grew in popularity, the buildings underwent many alterations and additions. Sufficient changes were made to obscure the building's original design. As it's machinery was updated and more space was needed, the brewery was forced to move to a more industrial area of Bogota city.In 1988 a renewal plan was made for Bavaria Brewery site. New use was proposed for the area including residential and central activities. An urban central park intended to be the focal point of the project.Because the interior was in good shape, the original floor plan remained unaltered with only one new level being built using two-story spaces. The interior was designed for its new function as a shopping center, which has resulted in a place where there is a great variety of activities connected by a system of walkways, corridors, tunnels and two outside elevators. On the exterior all historic elements have been preserved, though all new elements are clearly distinguished from the old but in a manner sympathetic to the industrial character of the Bavaria Brewery. These buildings have been evolutionary in their structure, never static, they have been marked with the imprint of different periods. As a result the design will reflect the present, recall the past, and insinuate the future.

Oral, Timur. « A Contemporary Turkish Coffeehouse Design Based on Historic Traditions ». Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36551.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The custom of coffee drinking in Turkey dates back to the sixteenth century coffeehouses of Istanbul, which were once important forums for community integration. Even though coffee drinking today is still an important custom in Turkey, traditional coffeehouses have lost their importance in urban areas and are rapidly being replaced by contemporary cafes that promote European themes. With the new generation placing less emphasis on traditional values and accepting a modernized lifestyle, the existence of Turkish coffeehouse culture is struggling to survive. The purpose of this thesis project was to develop a design concept for a contemporary Turkish coffeehouse franchise retaining important aspects of the traditional coffeehouses of the past. Historic features were identified through observations and visual recordings of historic Turkish coffeehouses and interviews with older patrons of traditional coffeehouses. Focus group discussions were held with graduate and undergraduate Turkish students enrolled at Virginia Tech to obtain information on their perceptions of traditional coffeehouses and responses to the idea of a contemporary coffeehouse. Based on the information gathered, design criteria were established for the design of individual coffeehouse components with a consistent image, adaptable to various sites and spaces. Coffeehouse logo, nameplate, and facade designs were proposed. Presentations for the design included detailed elevations, plans, sketches, and perspective views.

Résumé :
The sex shop has existed as spatially Othered and ideologically transgressive. However, the last decades have witnessed both a literal and figurative move into a position of normalcy and legitimacy. Previous research conducted on this topic has covered this shift, and the importance of a “feminization” of the market for this to happen. While the previous research is extensive on the “new” sex shop, it has partly overlooked the hybridization of the traditional with the feminized. This essay has thus aimed to discern the trends of a “mixed-gender” sex shop, in order to both contribute to the understanding of the Swedish context as well as how class, gender, and past & present work as distinctions within this. The results show that a stereotypical femininity and masculinity is visually used by the store as tropes of distinction. As abstract ideals they converge in a rhetoric of an aspirational class, that sees knowledge as well as consumption as vital to a “sexual health”. However, while the commodities on offer are partly marketed with such sophistication, they are equally advertised as realistic resemblances of genitalia or parts of the body. Thus, the sophisticated consumption is diversified with a realistic, at times vulgar, address. The conclusive observation here is hence that the traditional sexuality-related consumption can coexist with a feminized version within one and the same store. Consequently, this essay sees that a plurality of desires is a part of the market’s continual expansion.

The three print series I completed within the past two years appear hardly related at first. However, these individual bodies of work, when examined chronologically, are continually informed by similar ideas. The most obvious of these is the act of piecing elements together to form something that had previously not existed, yet still influences the original source. In all three series, images are taken from an original source and re-contextualized. The idea of cultural or anthropological landscapes is also a theme throughout my work. Each individual series toyed with the idea of an imaginary or theoretical anthropological landscape in direct comparison to its pre-existing model. These humorous and oftentimes puzzling images are influenced by my over-active imagination, fueled by equal parts pop culture, playful cynicism, and desperate idealism.

Eriksson, Niklas. « Urbanism Under Sail : An Archaeology of Fluit Ships in Early Modern Everyday Life ». Doctoral thesis, Södertörns högskola, Arkeologi, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-24415.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In the seventeenth- and early eighteenth centuries, fluits were the most common type of merchant ship used in Baltic trade. Originally a Dutch design, the majority of all goods transported between Sweden and the Republic was carried on board such vessels. Far from all voyages reached their destination. Down in the cold brackish water of the Baltic, the preservation conditions are optimal, and several of these unfortunate vessels remain nearly intact today. Although thousands of more or less identical fluits were built, surprisingly little is known about the arrangement of space on board, their sculptural embellishment and other aspects that formed the physical component of everyday life on and alongside these ships. Fluits were a fixture in early modern society, so numerous that they became almost invisible. The study of wrecks thus holds great potential for revealing vital components of early modern life. Inspired by phenomenological approaches in archaeology, this thesis aims to focus on the lived experience of fluits. It sets out to grasp for seemingly mundane everyday activities relating to these ships, from the physical arrangements for eating, sleeping and answering nature’s call, to their rearrangement for naval use, and ends with a consideration of the architectonical contribution of the fluit to the urban landscape.

Résumé :
With housing demands rising in already dense urban environments new housing typologies must be tested. In the seventeenth century the medieval version of the London Bridge addressed issues of a growing city by coupling infrastructure with acts of domesticity included a central chapel, shops, and housing. In 2003 the Porter House by SHoP Architects challenged conventional housing typologies in New York City with their air rights proposal. The Porter House functions on multiple levels and challenges historic conservation and current zoning code. In 2009 twenty-five luxury villas were illegally built by developers on the roof of the multi-story shopping mall inHengyang, China. These examples challenge normative building practices and provide a foundation for further investigation of housing typology and urbanism of the air. In order increase density in land-poor modernizing cities, the architectural discipline must balance the opportunities of air rights proposals over historic buildings by challenging the nostalgic notion of preservation.

<p>The historic Olympic stadium in Helsinki of 1938, venue of the Olympic Games in 1952, is elaborately modernized at present. The individual impression as a historic building, particularly the distinctive facade, is preserved in detail. Observing the severe restrictions of monumental protection, the now 80 years old building is complemented, among other things, by the construction of a warm-up running racetrack hall and a mall with shops as well as new stand roofs for both stands. In this context, MAURER develops special structural uplift bearings for the new roof construction. The distinctive feature is transferring primarily occurring tensile loads (secondary alternating pressure loads) kinematically precise to the substructure while balancing relative movements and relative torsion. The architecture requires smallest structures that meet highest safety requirements.</p>

Khomenko, Tetiana. TIME AND SPACE OF HISTORICAL PARALLELS OF EUGEN SVERSTIUK’S JOURNALISM. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, mars 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11095.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The article is dedicated to the investigation of time-space measurements of journalistic works of Eugen Sverstiuk, a well-known Ukrainian journalist. In particular, the time-space continuum of his works is being discussed, which is characterized as comprehensive, continuous, filled with archetypical images which metaphorize the text, but at the same time structure it, and are beaded on the axis of time and documentarily located in the space. The logics of images initiated in the text is exaggerated by constant dwelling of the author in the time-space dimensions of the epoque, of which he was a contemporary, as well as precise knowledge of World and Ukrainian history and culture. Historical parallelism of journalism of E. Sverstiuk possesses double potential. On the one hand, the author provides arguments for confirmation of his own opinion, and on the other, he shows us historical collisions in the new aspect, which helps consider the past, better understand the present, and think of the future. Pages of his works is space for author’s considerations, which logics impresses by free transgression of the author in the time, and his ability to grasp the most essential, although sometimes precedent, sometimes sudden and forgotten, or even unknown historical facts in order to force them to resonate in the new historical realities, first of all to indicate the importance of national and the need for assigning to it more significance. Using retrospectives, E. Sverstiuk encourages us to return to the national sources and to seek in ourselves the reflections of nationality in order to return historical truth to our audience. This is what, according to E. Sverstiuk, was believed to be one of the most necessary conditions of existence to the independent state. Time-space continuum of E. Sverstiuk’s journalism is reproduction of comprehensive history as continuous process of the development of humanity, and of formation of comprehensive, total, and so to say epic reading and understanding of these processes via accentuation of reader’s attention on key events, phenomena, and facts.

Flandreau, Marc. Pari Passu Lost and Found : The Origins of Sovereign Bankruptcy 1798-1873. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, juin 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp186.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Verdicts returned by modern courts of justice in the context of sovereign debt lawsuits have upheld a ratable (proportional) interpretation of so-called “pari passu” clauses in debt contracts which, literally, promise creditors they will be dealt with equitably. Such verdicts have given individual creditors the right to interfere with payments to others, in situation where the sovereign had failed to make proportional payments. Contract originalists argue that this interpretation of pari passu clauses has no historical foundation. Historically, they claim, pari passu clauses never granted individual creditors a unilateral right to block payments to other bondholders assenting to a government debt restructuring proposal. This article shows this claim is incorrect. Drawing on novel archival research, it argues that pari passu clauses find one potent historical origin in the operation of a now forgotten sovereign bankruptcy tribunal, the London stock exchange. Under the law of the stock exchange, departure from ratable payments did create a unilateral right for individual creditors to interfere with sovereign debt discharges. In fact, ratable distributions provided the touchstone for the stock exchange sanctioned sovereign debt discharge system. What is more, sophisticated contract drafters availed themselves of the logic. The result was a weaponization of pari passu clauses, and their inscription into sovereign debt covenants in the 19th century. The article concludes that the modern debate on the role of clauses in sovereign debt contracts cannot be held without thorough reconsideration of the history of sovereign bankruptcy.

Résumé :
Stealth technology was one of the most decisive developments in military aviation in the last 50 years. With U.S. technological leadership now under challenge, especially from China, this issue brief derives several lessons from the history of Stealth to guide current policymakers. The example of Stealth shows how the United States produced one critical technology in the past and how it might produce others today.

Herrera Dappe, Matías, Tomás Serebrisky et Ancor Suárez-Alemán. On the Historical Relationship between Port (In)Efficiency and Transport Costs in the Developing World. Inter-American Development Bank, juin 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003326.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Do differences in port performance explain differences in maritime transport costs? How much would improvements in port performance reduce maritime transport costs in developing countries? To answer this question, we use a widely used transport cost model, but we provide a new measure of port efficiency, estimated through a non-parametric approach. Relying on data from the early 2000s, this paper shows that for a sample of 115 container ports in 39 developing countries, becoming as efficient as the country with the most efficient port sector would reduce average maritime transport costs by 5 percent. For the most inefficient country, the reduction in transport costs could reach 15 percent. These findings point out the potential gains that can be achieved from the combination of betterquality investment and more efficient service provision in the port sector. The estimates in this paper cannot be updated because the databases were discontinued and it therefore highlights the need to generate data to evaluate the effectiveness of public policies that are key to competitiveness.

Klengel, Susanne. Pandemic Avant-Garde Urban Coexistence in Mário de Andrade’s Pauliceia Desvairada (1922) after the Spanish Flu. Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America, décembre 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.46877/klengel.2020.30.

Résumé :
The radical aesthetic of the historical avant-garde movements has often been explained as a reaction to the catastrophic experience of the First World War and a denouncement of the bourgeoisie’s responsibility for its horrors. This article explores a blind spot in these familiar interpretations of the international avant-garde. Not only the violence of the World War but also the experience of a worldwide deadly pandemic, the Spanish flu, have moulded the literary and artistic production of the 1920s. In this paper, I explore this hypothesis through the example of Mário de Andrade’s famous book of poetry Pauliceia desvairada (1922), which I reinterpret in the light of historical studies on the Spanish flu in São Paulo. An in-depth examination of all parts of this important early opus of the Brazilian Modernism shows that Mário de Andrade’s poetic images of urban coexistence simultaneously aim at a radical renewal of language and at a melancholic coming to terms with a traumatic pandemic past.

Clark, Todd E., Gergely Ganics et Elmar Mertens. What is the predictive value of SPF point and density forecasts ? Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, novembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.26509/frbc-wp-202237.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This paper presents a new approach to combining the information in point and density forecasts from the Survey of Professional Forecasters (SPF) and assesses the incremental value of the density forecasts. Our starting point is a model, developed in companion work, that constructs quarterly term structures of expectations and uncertainty from SPF point forecasts for quarterly fixed horizons and annual fixed events. We then employ entropic tilting to bring the density forecast information contained in the SPF’s probability bins to bear on the model estimates. In a novel application of entropic tilting, we let the resulting predictive densities exactly replicate the SPF’s probability bins. Our empirical analysis of SPF forecasts of GDP growth and inflation shows that tilting to the SPF’s probability bins can visibly affect our model-based predictive distributions. Yet in historical evaluations, tilting does not offer consistent benefits to forecast accuracy relative to the model-based densities that are centered on the SPF’s point forecasts and reflect the historical behavior of SPF forecast errors. That said, there can be periods in which tilting to the bin information helps forecast accuracy. Replication files are available at https://github.com/elmarmertens/ClarkGanicsMertensSPFfancharts

Open configuration options Going Beyond Normal Challenges for Health and Healthcare in Latin America and the Caribbean Exposed by Covid-19. Inter-American Development Bank, mai 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004242.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This technical note describes how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Latin America and the Caribbean, and considers the implications for future population health, health spending, healthcare service reforms, and investments to prepare for future health emergencies. It provides a summary of the few existing empirical studies and then contributes original analysis using administrative data from hospitals and vital registration systems in five countries. It shows substantial declines in health and healthcare delivery during the first year of the pandemic, especially for preventive and elective care. Some countries were able to return healthcare to historical levels, while others were still below average in 2021. The study concludes with reflections on how the pandemic has altered health policy recommendations for the region, generating a greater sense of urgency to make progress on long-standing agendas such as eliminating fragmentation, integrating care, and pursuing digital transformation while reordering priorities toward investments in emergency preparedness, disease surveillance, resilience, and self-sufficiency. In other words, going beyond normal.

Teixeira, Mariana. Vulnerability : A Critical Tool for Conviviality-Inequality Studies. Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America, mai 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46877/teixeira.2022.44.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The aim of this working paper is to foster the concept of “vulnerability” as a critical tool for social theory in general and conviviality-inequality studies in particular. First, to clarify the concept, an analytical distinction is established between vulnerability as either an experiential structure shared by all persons (constitutive vulnerability) or as historical social injustice that detrimentally impacts some more than others (contingent vulnerability). The paper then explores the contrast between approaches to epistemic injustice theory and standpoint epistemology as two opposing views with regard to the political and epistemic potential of vulnerability. From this contrast, finally, a critique of one-sided conceptions shows us that, for vulnerability to have a productive and critical use, it must be grasped as fraught with ambiguity, implying both a contingent risk of subjection and a constitutive opening to otherness. It is this ambiguity that makes vulnerability a useful conceptual tool for grasping conviviality as inextricably connected to inequality
