Résumé :
In this thesis, the problem of the principles of new designs in historic built landscapes is discussed. In approaching the problem, a theoretical framework is developed and the general principles regarding new buildings in historic settings are derived from the theoretical context. Subsequently, the proposed principles is tried to be adapted to the case of Odunpazari historic urban fabric. Finally, a Youth Center for a specific Project Area in Odunpazari is proposed, and the integration of the proposal to the context is evaluated. The foremost aim of the thesis is proposing general principles concerning good architecture that continues and contributes to the spirit of place, and adapting them for a specific design problem in a specific place in order to evaluate the efficiency of the principles proposed. In developing the theoretical framework, it was discussed that, in determination of the principles for new designs, the historic built landscape should be handled in a way that resolves the network of relationships and allow the definition of the spirit of place. The methodology of understanding the spirit of place was established with reference to the approaches developed by Christopher Alexander and Christian Norberg-Schulz. According to the studies by these scholars, a triad layer system in resolving the spirit of place is developed. As named by Christian Norberg-Schulz, the layers of Gestalts, typologies and figures constituted the analytical framework leading to the resolution of the network of relationships between the components of a place. This model of analyzing and defining the spirit of place was found valuable, since it does not only focuses on the formal aspects of the historic built landscape, but also questions the main rules forming the unity and coherence of place. Odunpazari traditional urban fabric is selected as a case study, and its physical, historical, social and economical context is evaluated by the help of the literature and site surveys. Finally, a &

Résumé :
The retention of historic structures and the information which they contain, the basic goals of historic preservation, has occurred with increasing frequency in the twenty-year period following the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Admittedly, the ideal scenario involves the retention and reuse of architecturally or historically important structures. However, occasionally notable buildings are found which are located upon sites earmarked for new construction or which have deteriorated to a condition which makes restoration or adaptive reuse not economically feasible. Adequate documentation prior to the destruction of such buildings not only preserves the information therein contained, but also may encourage reuse of some structures by making the owner aware of their contribution to the streetscape, to local history or to the architectural history of a community or region.Although parameters for adequate documentation exist at the national level for national landmarks, state and local standards are vague at best, leaving both the professional and the non-professional preservationist to determine the level of documentation and the amount of research required. Difficult at best for the professional, documentation in the absence of guidelines frequently proves disastrous for the non-professional.This thesis is the product of a documentation project conducted between September 1984 and October 1985 to provide "adequate documentation" for a client of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Having no established guidelines or precedent to follow, and instructed to produce "adequate documentation" for 28 structures at six Indiana State Hospitals, the documentation team learned much during the fourteen-month process of producing both written and graphic documentation. The author presents this descriptive analysis of one component of the documentation process - the preparation of the 331-page written text which accompanied photographs and H.A.B.S. drawings. While each project differs, the Indiana State Hospital Project established a precedent which may be referred to By the C.A.P. when faced with similar projects in the future.

My dissertation is based on the appraisal of wooden roof construction in baroque church Nanebevzetí Panny Marie in Vranově nad Dyjí. The main reason of this appraisal was preserving the church´s interior which was newly reconstructed with high historical value. The dissertation includes also the rehabilitation solution. The appraisal was based on the research witch used sense and instrumental methods. In the first part were found out all size of each construction´s parts and was established the type of rafters´ systém. Then the research solved some impaired wooden parts and their reasons. For suitable rehabilitation solution was defined the transition between well and impaired part. The best rehabilitation solution is the construction solution by the conditions using further procedures, e.g. preventive chemical protection.

Résumé :
The dissertation explores the history and activities of the Brno-located Town and Country Planning Department of The Research Institute for Building and Architecture (RIBA) since its foundation in 1954 until its abolishment in 1994. As a part of the department functioning, a description of its main research tasks and publications, which had played an essential part while formulating theory and methodology of urban planning after the 2nd World War in Czechoslovakia, are introduced. Special attention is paid to tasks and publications whose authors and research workers applied interdisciplinary approaches and – in spite of the prevailing totalitarian regime – managed to apply their experience acquired abroad to produce highly influential works such as The Principles and Rules of Spatial Planning. Another objective of the dissertation is the creation of a complex bibliography of texts that were produced by the department (books, reports on the outcomes of research tasks that had been explored at the Town and Country Planning Department and that were released internally as handbooks serving research workers of the institute and other institutions focusing on building and architecture). Depictions of the Brno department of RIBA from the perspective of two of its significant representatives who have outlived the institution they had witnessed to be founded and to the functioning of which they had significantly contributed, become a key part of the text: Ing. arch. Vladimír Matoušek, CSc., the second head of the Town and Country Planning Department of RIBA and Ing. arch. Dušan Riedl, CSc., a theoretician of architecture and urban planning and a top expert on Czech national herritage. As the topic has not yet been subjected to scholarly research, the main objective of the work is to create the very first complex text on the Brno department of RIBA and its activities. The circumstances surrounding the constitution of RIBA in the context of other similarly functioning research institutes are pursued with a special focus on the fields of building, architecture and urban planning as well as legislative embedding of its foundation and functioning, its organization structure, staff, definition of taskmasters and the way the tasks were approached, relations to other institutions in the field, publishing activities and transfer of theoretical research outcomes to practice. The text also deals with the state of present-day research of architecture and urban planning. Archive material and publications released by the institute represent a predominant source of information about RIBA activities. They are now stored at the archive of ABF Foundation in Prague (the foundation has been administering both the archive and library of the Prague department of RIBA since its abolishment), at the library of The Institute for Spatial Development in Brno (the institute administers the library of the former Brno department) and at the Moravian Land Archive in Brno. Both of the archives have been thoroughly researched by the author. Critical reflections upon the urban-planning department of RIBA occurring in contemporary publications and periodicals are another important source of information which help to specify the character of its activities (recent literature mentions RIBA scarcely, a complex evaluation is still missing). Oral history reported by former employees of RIBA, who had contributed to the first-rate quality of its research activities.

Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1271.

Résumé :
Being one of the largest and most influential ethnic groups in Southern California, Mexican and Latinx communities have continuously played a significant role in the shaping of major cities. Despite the history of racist and exclusionary urban planning and policy, Latinxs have persevered through adaptive and creative methods of creating space and reusing resources. Such strength, creativity, and resourcefulness are assets within Latinx communities and are also ways that they practice sustainability, thus having the potential to play a significant role in the development of sustainable cities. Therefore, by focusing local solutions and development projects on community assets as opposed to just community need, voice, autonomy, and inclusion are given to Latinx communities, where they not only participate in the development projects that affect them but are the drivers of the solutions and positive changes they see in their communities. I will be doing two case studies on two non-profit community-based organizations, Huerta del Valle and East LA Community Corporation, who practice this form of asset-based community development. Being situated in two of the most population dense areas in Southern California with the highest concentrations of Mexican and Latinx people, East Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, both organizations serve predominantly Mexican and Latinx communities. By practicing asset-based community development through their programming, Huerta del Valle and East LA Community Corporation are connecting their local communities to decision-making spaces, socially and economically empowering their communities, and overseeing green communal urban spaces. Thus, through asset-based community development, these two organizations are able to uplift and meet the needs of both human ecosystems and the natural ecosystems, creating socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable cities, especially for historically marginalized urban communities.

Résumé :
Despite its origins in England two hundred years ago, the picturesque continues to influence landscape architectural practice in late twentieth-century New Zealand. The evidence for this is derived from a close reading of the published discourse of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects, particularly the now defunct professional journal, The Landscape. Through conceptualising the picturesque as a language, a model is developed which provides a framework for recording the survey results. The way in which the picturesque persists as naturalised conventions in the discourse is expressed as four landscape myths. Through extending the metaphor of language, pidgins and creoles provide an analogy for the introduction and development of the picturesque in New Zealand. Some implications for theory, practice and education follow.

Reutilization means to change the original purposes or the process of lasting reuse function in architecture’s life cycle. The purpose is to prevent historical buildings from destroy or leave unused. The project of historical buildings’ reutilization often cooperates by teams from different background to design its processes. Though different participants exchange large designing data and communicate to obtain coordination and consistency in designing results. Therefore, the key factor of the project success is depend on process design and the way of communicate. This study focuses on optimizing and improving the interactions among design activities of historic building renovation as well as establishing and verifying scheduling system analysis and modules. We tried to understand the steps taken by consultants during the design and planning process of historic building renovation through literatures and break down the processes according to Design Structure Matrix. By combining matrix and traditional tear method, we reduce mutual coupling in process design and offer problem solving that may occur. We use analysis model in practical cases to confirm the capable of process redesign, in order to achieve the purpose.

Historic buildings still prevalent considerable potential fire risk factors, if fire is weak when encountering monuments Vulcan, the consequences often cause significant losses of cultural assets, the relative importance of fire safety. Since the destruction of the fire damage is a comprehensive, some monument or historical building materials used in wood, bamboo and so less able to build a fire retardant material, if in the event of fire damage, prone to rage out of control hazards. Fire load is about the duration of the fire and the fire temperature an important factor to predict the actual fire behavior must grasp its value. In the building when the fire resistance design fire load is growing spread of fire prevention, fire resistance of building structures and building a fire inspection certificate to avoid security verification inspection, although the basic parameters. Also today historic buildings to use or reuse as much exhibition space for public use mostly, which is apt to cause fire damage deposit of combustible materials piled their way with the growth speed of the fire, so the fire hazard control, and we must first understand the monuments and historic buildings constructed of material itself, and then discusses the fire load in storage methods. In this study, the fire load capacity of the databases established, future in the Japanese-style wooden structure monuments and historic buildings fire protection design, providing Enter building combustible fire load capacity density or heat release rate to predict various fire Behavior basic parameters, such as the time of the fire continued, suggesting that the fire temperature and so on. Many of Taiwan’s historic buildings and blocks have slowly developed and become new landmarks. After an interview with a gourmet show or a tourist program,a large number of people come to visit these blocks during holidays. The original narrow streets become new gathering points because of the gathering business. We should understand what the current risk factors are, and put forward the solution to solve these risk factors. Avoiding risk factors cause harm to tourists’ personal safety when a fire rescue case or an emergency medical service is occurred. This study will be able to identify multiple risk factors that threaten the Hukou Township historic buildings and blocks by reviewing and analyzing the fire cases located at historical buildings and blocks. This study adopted literature review methods, case analysis methods, expert interview methods, questionnaire survey methods, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and other research methods to find out risk factors and develop the solving solution, and be provided as a reference for fire rescue authorities or relevant units to make the fire rescue, emergency medical service and personnel evacuation strategies. With a view to make a fast and correct response to the disasters, and increase the probability of evacuation effectively both for residents and tourists. The hierarchical structure of improvement plan of risk factors in the Hukou historic buildings and blocks was developed in this study, and contains 5 goals, 13 criteria, and 3 candidate improvement plans. The questionnaire survey was conducted of six fire brigades and summarized the weights of the basic goals and candidate plans through analytic hierarchical analysis. According to the statistics, we know the order of goals, which are funds (weight value:0.48 ), executive manpower (weight value:0.24 ),iii execution time (weight value:0.13 ), efficiency achievement (weight value:0.08 ), and advanced concept of disaster prevention (weight value:0.05 ), and the order of improvement plans, which are conducting regular fire drills and inspections by fire departments (integration weights:0.57), installing residential fire detectors in households located on historical streets (Integrated Weights:0.28), and promoting education and training for self-government committees in the business district (general weight:0.13) In conclusion, the best improvement plan of risk factors in the Hukou historic buildings and blocks is conducting regular fire drills and inspections by fire departments.

Historic sites and historical buildings are the crystals of artistic wisdom in history; they record the architectural styles and culture of the time. Once a fire occurs and it is not controlled immediately, the structures would be destroyed, seriously damaging the cultural and historical values. Thus, fire prevention in historical buildings is an important issue. This study collected the documents from 1853 to 2013 to discuss the fire causes. The results indicated that arson accounts for 33.33%, negligence of fire use accounts for 28.21%, electrical fire accounts for 20.51%, unknown cause accounts for 12.82%, and negligence in construction accounts for 2.56%. The conservation of historic sites and historical buildings should be accomplished by a reasonable and feasible fire prevention system. According to the discussion on the fire prevention management system, the historic sites and historical buildings are not outside of the applicable scope of the Fire Act, as indicated in the Cultural Assets Preservation Act. The fire prevention management should contain fire prevention concept and appropriate fire prevention management strategies. In order to detect fire early, an automatic notification mechanism needs to be adopted, while arson prevention, training on fire prevention and electrical equipment use should be provided for workers, and fire-fighting drills should be held regularly. The cultural management units should supervise the fire prevention management system, plan response strategies for disasters, evaluate fire risks of historic sites periodically, and combine the strategies of self-service, joint-service and public-service. The fire prevention plan should be performed by Plan, Do, Check and Act, so as to upgrade the fire safety level of historic sites and historical buildings. The case protection prospectus and fire prevention management strategy are made based on the concept of "management first and quick notification". The fire risk assessment method of this study refers to the results of Shen-Wen Chien , who used point planning method, and Chihkan Tower was treated as the research target. Although the evaluation result is of Class A (good), there are still some potential fire risk factors, such as fire prevention drill not meeting the fire scene, no broadcast system, and nighttime notification. The above problems are also the emphases on other historic sites and historical buildings in Taiwan.

In 1982, the Council for Cultural Affairs established "Cultural Heritage Preservation Act", which designates or registers architectural works with history and cultural value as monuments and historic buildings in order to make the next generation continuously understand the history by visiting them. However, there are many monuments and historic buildings which are not immediately preserved and maintained after designated or registered. Improper methods also lead monuments and historical buildings to lose the original appearance, or even to be damaged. Therefore, it is required that any of the monuments and historic buildings need to have an intact project of management and maintenance of monuments and historic buildings. Yongjing Wei Chengmei ancestral hall is the only one that was totally invested by owner to repair in Changhua. In 2004, it was praised by monument expert Li QianLang as "Taiwan's twenty folk ancient buildings". Afterward, Yongjing Wei Chengmei ancestral hall was registered as a historic building by Changhua county government on 2008. The structure is combined with many different construction materials. Therefore, the regular maintenance and preservation of the buildings rely on experts from different fields to propose a comprehensive project of management and maintenance. This study is expected to understand the advantages and disadvantages in project of the management and maintenance of and historic buildings, which has a great resource, to understand the problems of the management and maintenance in Taiwan, and to make suggestions.

The case of this research was focus on Fu-Jong-Tang House which was analyzed the Historical Buildings Re-used value by dilemma, decision making models and recycled of building the community value. The research methods in this case adopted literature reviews, interviews and evaluation. Firstly, we reviewed the literature of Historical Buildings, and reinforced the theory. Secondly, interview. People who have attended the architecture reconstruction were assembled together conducting an In-depth Interview. Finally, using the assessment from Council of Culture Affairs verified and concluded the research. An Hundred years construction was easy degenerating. However, reservation, repair, huge expense and people with passion mind are truly indispensible. From the development of Fu-Jong-Tang House, we found that collaborative value of native people was the key factor and government culture policy and budget supported for Historical Buildings reservations. The conclusions were as following: 1. The Historical Buildings Re-used still had “The law system is incomplete ” and “The skilled manpower resources are insufficient” and so on two big difficult positions. 2. Fu-Jong-Tang House reconstructs when unifies the multiplex transport business pattern which the government and the community resources invest and continue forever to develop to sufficiently reference. 3. The Historical Buildings Re-used for the place culture space, may strengthen community value building again, then had the condensation society still to unify the community the life, to need by the area, and the thorough community entered resources excavation, environment work and so on improvement, could condense the value to take root for a long time.

According to Historic Building Conservation Laws, the historical site once had been assigned, its historical architectural feature should be maintained and its land development should be restricted. Due to the thinking way of Reservation of Historical Site changing recently, the Re-Usage becomes one of the approaches to reserve the Historical Sites. Public Sector had proposed and amended some cultural asset management related laws and regulations in order to reduce its financial and wage loading to the employee. By the outsourcing strategy, Private Sectors have expected to manage the historical Site in a more efficient way. The participation of management of Historical Site Re-Usage by private sectors was highly inspired in order to create new feature of sites. Any new functions introduced from re-usage should not against the original meanings of designation of historical site. Some examples which according to policies of public sectors were queried about it have no relations to its historical content and meanings. The SPOT-Taipei Film House was transformed form the consultancy of USA-Taipei. The Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre was transformed from Zhongzheng Second Police District. The above examples were come from the policy of Re-Usage of space by the public sectors. However, the examples had messed the reasons of designation of historic site and confused the audience a lot. In recent years, monuments and historic buildings damaged by the fire, and thus much of Taiwanese have paid attention to such disaster-prevented research program. Monuments and historic buildings cover a wide range and various types of usage purposes, which make the disaster-prevented programs different. For example, the increasing use frequencies of museums and monuments may cause some tough issues and dilemma due to exhibition purposes, inner spaces modified and modern equipment installed. Besides whole memorial buildings, museums include more cultural relics and antiques than other historic buildings as well. Therefore, it’s necessary to build disaster-prevented programs for museums. This study will explore and focus on the museums and monuments by disaster-prevented points. The following are the purposes of this study: 1.To understand the status of implementation issues of museum disaster-prevented programs. 2.Give some suggestion toward the present issues. Also, the results and suggestions are as follows: Result: (1)For short-term exhibition display space and interior decoration materials, fireproof materials are not used. OT has already become the new trend of the policy to reuse historical buildings in recent years, take Taipei City as an example, they established 13 OT institutes like Gu Ling Experimental Theatre, The Taipei House, The Taipei Story House in 1993. We have found some question points in this mechanism: The first is the disequilibrium of cooperative mechanism between the public and private departments; the operators are passive and the execution has to follow the rules and the operation orientation defined by public departments. The unbalance communication mode will influence the operation performance. How to let the public and private departments to come out the greatest efficiency in this cooperative mechanism is very important. The second is the usability and public access of the historical buildings; in public good's point of view, OT may make the power of management of the historical buildings belong to one private group or enterprises, although the conduct of business can balance the daily expenses, the too high amount of expenditure may lower not only the accessibility of the historical buildings but also the authorities and opportunities of people to enter and use them at will. In order to balance the right between the public and private departments and reach the greatest effect of this mechanism operation, the foundation of an assessment mechanism in order to inspect the standardizing items of the cooperation between public and privacy departments is proposed in this research. Thus, the research contents are as follows: 1. Adopt the spirit and mechanism of OT as the basic to inspect the present situation of the management of the existing reuse cases. 2. To discuss the usability and public access of the historical buildings in the aspect of the public good. 3. Decree aspect --Study the assessment condition of the folk that the government put forward while inviting bids and the course of the implement mechanism, thus understand the real state of OT. 4. Set up the assessment mechanism of OT the historical buildings. This research aims at the study of the operation model of the reused historical buildings and the evaluation of the reuse performance. Proposed research methods is investigating into the present situation and analyzing the user behavior as the primary research activity. The reciprocal contrast between the depth interview of public and private departments is also included. The research approach is as follows: 1. Document retrospect: 2. Investigation on present situation and analysis on user behavior; 3. Profound interview with public depart- ments; 4. Profound interview with operators. The contribution of this research is divided into four parts: 1. The collection and analysis of the basic material of reuse cases which include the function and manner of the re-use, the analysis of the space use. Those are the reference materials for the public departments and operators in the future . 2. Set up the assessment mechanism of OT the historical buildings. The evaluation system is divided and used for the three orientations, using the rationality of administrative procedure, the suitability of the space usage and the public access of historical buildings as the main concept, then making the criterion and way of assessment. Hope these can be issued as rules or regulations then we get the reference while assessing the OT performance of the historical buildings. 3. The revision and tools set-up of the cooperation mechanism between the public and private departments. a. The revision of the cooperation mechanism: the combination of epair plan stage and re-use stage. b. The tool set-up of the cooperation mechanism: 1) Carry on the investigation of the historical buildings resources and the integration plan; 2) Disclosure the consultation meeting; 3) set up the short, middle and long term plans of the OT historical buildings; 4) Set up the mechanism of repair and mainteance; 5) Establish the plan of the re-use space which accords with the public access; 6) Set up the management performance report of the OT historical buildings and relevant database. 4. The suggestions to operators: 1) The activity programs rely mainly on popularizing the historical buildings and then culture and arts and focus on the getting the community identification at the same time; 2) The training of the human resources and the way of permanent operation; 3) Way to expand capital source; 4) Create the cooperation model in which the resource and profits are shared among the management group and subcontracting group.

Because building reconstruction of city historic central district is in historic environment, first, it faces with this problem -how the reconstruction building integrate into historic environment to response to historic environment characteristics; second, Taiwan cities central districts are often divided as business district, have high -volume use, and have general condition of mixed-use housing complexes, so the building in business district has much resident function use space. Under the circumstances of high volume, the positive law in business district is not easy to guarantee the quality of residential environment of the building used as residence function, and there are often bad residential environment quality conditions. So how to improve the quality of residential environment of reconstruction building of central business district becomes another problem. To improve the quality of residential environment of Tainan City historic central district and make the building response the historic environment characteristics. From the angle of control building measurement, this study advances building quality control way for improving central business district residential environment quality and making reconstruction buildings response to historic environment characteristics, analyzes the effect of control way to building inner space to probe whether the building can improve the quality of residential environment and response historic environment characteristics by adjusting building structure. But only further mastering Tainan city historic central district mass and dweller information, can probe the effects of building structure control for building inner space. This study measures and sorts out all mass dimension of street contour of Yunghua palace, Chi Tzi Li, the Confucius cultural park by contrasting cadaster and navigation contrasting chart; and analyze the information such as dwellers’ family conditions and residential characteristics etc to simulate and probe the effect of different control regulations for building reconstruction by resistant environment questionnaire. The results of the study: 1. Characteristics of plots and residents The most of the plots of historic central district of Tainnan City is with the type that the face width is narrower and the depth is longer, and the base face width mostly is one room but cannot be divided into two rooms. It is possible to rebuild the buildings into flat style only after combining two or more plots, and the residents in this district are willing to continue to live here. When rebuilding the buildings as structure control, must take the original residents’ space needs in consideration, and also take the space needs of the residents that are possibly live here in the future in consideration. In addition, there is a certain rate between residential and operating function in the same building, and this also consists in the block periphery. Residence and commerce are in the same building, which is also the emphasis of the consideration when rebuilding the buildings. 2. The effect of buildings structure control: If the block periphery use “the scale of the backyard depth” to control buildings structure, respectively taking the foundation, the floor of the second floor and that of the third floor as bases, Making structure control, it only need some little adjustment on the design. It slightly affects the buildings’ statutory volume and the inner space, and can improves the quality of air and natural lighting of the rear rooms of the block periphery buildings, making it be similar to the backyard quality of the fifth kind of residential district in Taipei City. The inner of the block, its buildings structure was built with traditional laneways, and the structure will be limited below the third floor, and the backyard will be controlled by “ backyard depth and its depth rate”, which slightly affect the buildings’ statutory volume and the inner space. About 60% of the plots only need some little adjustment, by which can make the control style, and about 20% of the plots, whose statutory volume cannot be sufficiently used up, is also suitable for the common family whose members are parents and a child and the families whose members is less than that of the common family. If the owners of this kind of plots can use control style, although the volume cannot be used up, it can meet the elementary space needs, and can improve the quality of residential environment of the buildings, and can show the characteristics of the traditional laneways.

To formulate the criteria of building structure control is one of the important works of urban conservation in historic central district. Because of the building structure control will influence the use of the inner space of buildings, and the criteria of building structure control might not be executed successfully with just scarce acceptance of the user. So, while formulating the criteria of building structure control of the historic central district, the user’s requirements and the opinions should be found out. That can be conducive for us not only to realize if the standard of the criteria is appropriate, but also to find out the emphases which should be negotiated with the users before the criteria will be executed. So as to the appropriate standard of the criteria and the properly public participation plan can be made, and it can increasing the acceptance of the users gradually; then, enable the criteria to be executed successfully. Therefore, this research presume the scheme of building structure control advocated by “Research for Tainan City Historic Central District Building Reconstruction Structure and Control-Special reference to street contour of Yunghua palace, Chi Tzi Li, the Confucius Temple Historical Area”(Tsai, Yi-hung, 2002)as executory scheme, and aim at to realize the viewpoints of the users in the street contour of Yunghua palace by the survey of questionnaire, in order to prove the propriety of the scheme of building structure control and to question what are the emphases which should be negotiated with the users before the criteria will be executed. Finally, this research can be the reference for formulating the criteria of building structure control and it’s executing plan. The results of this research: 1. The propriety of the scheme of building structure control (1)Compare with the regulations existed, the “ height-control criterion outside the street contour” of the scheme only causes a few effect on the structure, and the “setback-control criterion inside the street contour” not only can conserve the characteristics of the traditional laneways, but also can be accepted by most of the users. So, the two criteria above are both properly and practicable. (2)The standard of the existed backyard setback-control regulations can not guarantee the quality of residential environment in historic central district. As a result, heightening the standard is indeed necessary. But the further research should be done to confirm if the standard of the backyard setback-control criterion of the scheme is properly. (3)Because of the scheme might cause great effect on few lots which are with short depth. It not only might cause some loss of statutory volume and injure the owner’s right, but also might cause that the volume of inner space can not fulfill the users’ requirements, even might cause it can not fulfill the minimum. As a result , the rational standard of building structure control should be suggested for those lots in order to ensure their quality of residential environment.. 2. The emphases which should be negotiated with the users before the criteria will be executed The users have higher acceptance about the “setback-control criterion inside the street contour” of the scheme, but don’t have higher acceptance about the “ height-control criterion inside the street contour” and the strategy that heighten the standard of the existed backyard setback-control regulations to improve the quality of residential environment. Furthermore, the opinion of the users and the consciousness about the quality of residential environment of the inhabitant indicates that before the criteria will be executed, to negotiate with the owners in order to make them accept some loss of statutory volume is necessary and to increase the acceptance about the purpose of heightening the standard of the existed backyard setback-control regulations of the users through medium, negotiation, education, or experiencing is also necessary, too.

Research on Investigation Process of Historical Wood-Structural Buildings and their Surroundings Attacked by Termites in Taiwan July-2006 By Hao-Yao Chang Thesis Adviser : Associate Professor : Chyn Shiue & Ming-Jer Tsai Abstract Currently in Taiwan, over sixty percents of the historical buildings are wood-framed. Therefore, the biological hazard brought by termites can be the biggest threat to these buildings. For an attack prevention of termites, we must understand thoroughly about the techniques for termite detection at first. In this thesis, I have discussed the method and the process of termite detection from several related researches systematically, and then suggested a set of procedures for termite detection. The procedures can be helpful by spotting the areas of termite activity which is an important basis for future prevention and solution to this problem. Thus, the life of these historical buildings can be further extended, and the architectural features and cultural values of our unique society can be passed down to the next generations. In the first chapter, there are three key points: (1) The generalization of basic knowledge and lifestyle of termites in Taiwan. (2) The generalization of existing techniques for termite detection. (3) The suggestion for the procedure of termite detection. More further discuss of these three points will present in chapter 2, 3 and 4. In the second chapter, I have introduced the ecological environment and the habitual behavior of termites in general. I have then focused on four kinds of termites, Coptotermes formosanus, Reticulitermes flaviceps Oshima, Odontotermes formosanus shiraki and drywood termites, which are the main causes of the damage to historical buildings in Taiwan. This can be an important basis for future investigation of termite detection at the scene. In the third chapter, I have collected related literature, interviewed some experienced people in the field of pest control and prevention, and joined investigations at the scene to form a basis for further discussion. In the forth chapter, I have used nine techniques mentioned above as the basis, discussed their mutual relationship, and then suggested a set of procedures for termite detection. At last, four cases are used for evaluation of the effect. In the fifth chapter, I have made a conclusion: (1) While making termite detection, we can spot the areas of termite activity by their lifestyle and marks left by them. (2) While using techniques for termite detection, we must pay attention on time, place, and order. The best situation is to detect termites without destroying historical buildings and without frightening away termites. (3) The procedures of termite detection can be separated in three steps, including initial investigation, instrument investigation, and final investigation. The procedures are clearly presented in Picture 5-1. Keywords:historical building, wood-framed, termite, termite hazard, termite detection

The landscape of James A. Garfield’s Mentor, Ohio home (now preserved at James A. Garfield National Historic Site) contains multiple layers of historical meanings and values. The landscape as portrayed in political biographies, political cartoons, and other ephemera during Garfield’s 1880 presidential campaign reveals the existence of the dual cultural values of agrarian tradition and agricultural progress in the late nineteenth century. Although Garfield did not depend on farming exclusively for his livelihood, he, like many agriculturalists of this era participated in a process of mediation between these dual values. The function of the landscape of Garfield’s farm between 1876 and 1880 is a reflection of this process of mediation. After President Garfield’s assassination in 1881, his wife and children returned to their Mentor home. Between 1885 and c. 1905, Garfield’s widow Lucretia made numerous changes to the agricultural landscape, facilitating the evolution of the home from farm to country estate. Despite the rich history of this landscape, its cultural complexity and evolution over time makes it difficult to interpret for public audiences. Additionally, the landscape is currently interpreted exclusively through indoor museum exhibits and outdoor wayside panels, two formats with severe limitations. I propose the integration of deep mapping into interpretation at James A. Garfield National historic site in order to more effectively represent the multi-layered qualities of its historic landscape.

Since listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, Penang has gradually started to put great emphasis on the precious cultural values cen- tered on people, as well as the cultures of different races. This thesis takes the obvious restoration of heritage buildings for the major record. At present, however, more and more individuals or groups are coming up to balance the improper distribution of the government resource planning, which has originally been Malaysian-culture-centered. With the more population of Chinese people in Penang, it is the issue how they strive for the Malaysia government’s concern in the situation that cultures impact each other and the resources are strived for by any applicants. This thesis focuses on the area of the historical city: George Town, Penang, Malaysia: 1. to get into the cultural history workshop and actually participate in the restoration of ancient houses, so as to record the actual process, as well as to explain and present the current problems, restoring and maintaining conditions of the Chinese Historical sites in Penang; and 2. to interview the defending individuals and groups in the area of Penang, Malaysia, which is the major discussion of this thesis.

Despite the importance of the preservation of the historic built environment for the benefit of present and future generations, there is a lack of knowledge of the effects of architectural rehabilitation decisions on the cultural significance of historic buildings. Architectural heritage conservation literature has focused almost exclusively on providing principles and guidelines, describing intervention methodologies, and discussing predicted impacts of design on material values. This thesis argues that a focus on the actual effects is needed if the sociocultural sustainability of historic buildings significance is to be achieved. Supported by an extensive literature review and informed by personal insights from the researcher’s everyday practice, an adapted model of the Theory of Change based on Weiss (1995) was designed, providing a tool to evaluate the effects of rehabilitation on cultural significance [ERECS]. Using a selection of six recently rehabilitated historic secondary schools in Portugal (liceus), this research investigated architectural decisions and their effects on the cultural values of this building typology for education, focusing on three objectives, corresponding to three stages of interventions: understanding the existing cultural significance, identifying the design strategies applied and assessing the short-term effects of design decisions on the cultural values. Stressing the role of stakeholders in rehabilitation processes, data were collected from the buildings and architectural projects, the decision makers in the conservation process, and the school community. Although confirming that the evaluation of the effects of architectural decisions on cultural values is a complex task, the findings demonstrate that the historic liceus have historical, architectural and sociocultural values, and whilst strategies did not value social values, material cultural values were generally considered and preserved, contributing to the enhancement of intangible values. The implications of this theory-based and evidence-based research highlight the importance of evaluating actual effects for cultural heritage theory, architectural conservation practice and heritage management policy.

“Small-scale and wandering traditional streets conceals from the big-scale and straight city”, the texture is that historical central districts in Tainan appearance. The “Business outside- Living inside” typology of these blocks contain all kinds of urban activities of daily life. On the other hand, central districts are usually delimited as high-intensity commercial districts. If we let buildings develop indulgently in high-volume laws of commercial districts, it will create huge buildings and cause historical characteristics disappear. Therefore, it is truly essential to enforce building-control in historical central districts and at the same time, laws in commercial districts are not easy to make sure environment quality. Another capital issue is that how to make sure environment quality in central districts. The purpose of building-control in this research is that make sure the buildings after rebuilding to response historical environment quality, and also give consideration to inside living quality. The studying area of this research is “Zone-Ye Old Streets” district in Tainan city. Using the view of structure of solid and void space allocation, observation on the principles of the urban elements in existing historical area is taken. Finally bring up the building renovation codes through the lots configuration. The methods include: (1) To construct the environmental discussion of historical central business district. (2) To observe and analyze the structure of “Solid and Void space allocation” in the “Zone-Ye Old Streets” district. And simulate the design guidelines in this area. (3) To interview with builders in order to search for rational developmental mechanism. The practicability of controlling methods is to check out if lots volume can use up. Through simulation, normal-type lots after rebuilding can use up to 80%. Farther, in architectural planning, we make sure if the building inside created by controlling rules can satisfy living functions of nuclear families. Then we bring up a combine-build development method in order to enhance the opportunity for local residents to live in original sites after developing, and preserve local life styles. Finally, we have interviews with six builders who are experienced in developing in historical central districts in depth-interview way in order to comprehend that the limits of development mechanism and the acceptability to the building controlling rules.

Monuments and Historic buildings are irreplaceable and irreproducible cultural assets, therefore it is more important to the prevention of disasters. There has been many cases of major fire accidents cause by improper use of fire, electrical wiring or arson caused the fire. With basic prevention of fire, the risk of catching fire and damage could be reduced. This study took the Jingmei Jiying as an example to explore and deeply analyze the disaster prevention and protection of the historic buildings. and draw up the SOP by the case of Jingmei Jiying. Based on the principle of" help themselves", "total saved" and "Save" principle, we also tried to reduction the SOP on disaster prevention and protection through the case study. 一、Study the disaster fighting system of preceding the value of historical relic. 二、Discuss the possiblity of combining the disaster fighting system with daily management. This research makes the historic site scene to Jingmei Jiying as the example in conformity with the temple with Taibei, make use of research results go on maintenance plan of managing and fire prevention, take precautions against natural calamities simulation of manoeuvre, find historic site historical building should strengthen, organize, defend oneself fire control organize into groups person, understand the position of the important historical relic and apparatus applicable way of facilities; file from the daily record that maintains and maintains and does the form regularly; surrounding environment of strengthening personnel and patrolling, so as to reduce the probability taking place in calamity. Research this city make historic site to be Jingmei Jiying as example, make use of research results go on maintenance plan of managing and fire prevention, take precautions against natural calamities simulation of manoeuvre in conformity with temple with Taibei city, find historic site historical building should strengthen, organize, defend oneself fire control organize into groups person, understand the position of the important historical relic and apparatus applicable way of facilities; From maintain and maintain record to make the form file regularly while being daily; The surrounding environment of strengthening personnel and patrolling, so as to reduce the probability taking place in calamity. The study showed that the disaster of historic buildings and monuments should be at its core is the establishment of a "value based on historic precedence," the disaster prevention system, by the daily administration and maintenance and inspection to strengthen the surrounding environment, to prevent disasters. With community residents in cooperation with the fire department, a "public education" courses to understand the importance of cultural assets and conduct fire drills activities to increase the interaction between managers, community residents and fire units and work together to preserve cultural assets, reduce the historic buildings and monuments disasters.

Nowadays, historical buildings have various potential hazardous fire factors such as the behavior of burning sacrifices to Gods. Although most historical buildings contain modern equipments, including fire fighting equipments and sensors of fire prediction, there is still lack of protection against fire accidents and such factors. If a disastrous fire occurs in a historical building with weak fire control ability, big loss of cultural assets would be in great concern. With developed techniques of building repairs in Taiwan, historical buildings could be repaired after the fire. However, since majority of the historical building have weak ability to prevent fire, it is still vital to make ways to keep these historical building in its best shapes. Due to those potential weaknesses and risk, the management of fire control is relatively important to historical building. The main factor of fire incidents on historical buildings is caused by people. With basic prevention of fire, such as the management of combustible materials, elimination of fire source and prevention of fire spread, the risk of catching fire and damage could be reduced. Therefore, this study focuses on the investigation of fire load, behavior of fire usage and the management and control of surrounding area. In this study, the theoretical data, evidence and the results from the investigation above would be analyzed and discussed, which is referred to the following: 1. Generalizing and analyzing the fire causes on historical buildings. 2. Discussing the defects of preventing fire from historical temples and providing recommendations. 3. Collecting data of fire load from historical temples as the references for relevant studies in the future.

Research of structural damage assessment of historical neighborhood with 3D street scanner – A case study of Dihua Street Advisor: Dr詹添全 Postgraduate: Chen, Pu-I Key word: Assessment of damage from earthquake, 3D street scanner, TELES Outline Located at the junction of tectonic plates, Taiwan has sufferred from the earthquake over a long period of time. Information about resistance to earthquake of old communities were not easy to keep because of ancient data, therefore, assessment of aseismatic ability for those architectures located in old communities cannot be performed easily. This research is mainly focus on how to simulate structural damage from the earthquake in Dihua Street by TELES whereby architectures in different styles, ages, use, floor space, quantity and stories of buildings established with 3D street scanner. We hereby scanned a part of Dihua Street, an old community, via TOPCOM IPS2 street scanner for TELES with variation through styles(Brick, Reinforced concrete, Reinforced brick and Wooden) , ages(Imitation of Western-style red brick street houses, Sheng Renaissance arches house, modernism defense colored brick street house, and 70 years after construction to flinch) , use(residence, business, industry, agriculture, NPO, government and education), floor space, quantity and stories of buildings. The result shows that the aseismatic ability of Dihua Street from Nanjing West Road section through Minsheng West Road section is weaker than the whole Yongle Village. It is suggested that starting strengthen works of architectures earlier, especially before any damage occurred from the earthquake. Another fact to be notice is that lower-storied wooden building shows better aseismatic ability at an earthquake measuring 6 to 7 on the Richter scale, ever better than lower-storied Reinforced concrete building. The advantage of TOPCOM IPS2 street scanner is fast, efficiency and complete in data collection and is well-suited for any kind of construction planning process. In old days, data collection during construction project is time-wasting and there was pretty much restraint, however, with TOPCOM IPS2 street scanner, data colletion is no more bother nowadays. All data of architectures are recorded in the database for further use in the future.

Résumé :
Adaptations of Prague Castle in the Time of the First Czechoslovak Republic The main subject of this thesis is to analyse one of the latest stages of the development of Prague Castle. The extent of the changes the historic core of the Czechoslovak state went through in the time of the first Republic is comparable only to the Theresian reconstruction in the second half of the 18th century, which unified the appearance of the castle and had a definite impact on the panorama of Hradčany. The period between 1918 and 1938, called the first Czechoslovak Republic, is connected with the development of a new democratic state. To offer a complete picture, the building activities in the area of Prague Castle shortly before 1918 are summarized as well; in some cases it was inevitable for the understanding of the modern reconstruction to insert short overviews of the whole building history. The analysis and the attempt to evaluate the mentioned important stage in the development of Prague Castle are based on a detailed study of the building activities that originally followed different goals. These activities concerned various parts of the castle and can be divided into three groups according to architects and builders: Kamil Hilbert, Josip Plečnik and Karel Fiala. The characters of the structures and of the...

Résumé :
The village build-up area in the region of Vysočina has been considerably changed during the 19th century from the timbered to the bricked constructions. The change started in the southwest part of this region at the beginning of the 19th century, which was probably caused by the older build-up area, which had already been partly bricked. The timbered constructions in the Vysočina's northeast part were officially tolerated from the late 19th century above all because of the rare build-up area in higher localities, where the wooden houses did not pose such fire risk like in villages with houses built closer to each other. Bricked buildings have gained a complicated progress during the 19th century, which was allowed by mostly various material sources. Partial rebuildings were often during the one or two generation time on average, which showed up thanks to the noted historical objects. From this reason it was necessary to look on all preserved objects from the view of building history, since all found situations are the results of the wide variety of the building phases covering each other. The progress mostly influenced by the fire prevention rules proceeded in many ways. The most important of them was the change of material of the walls and gradual separation of the truss and the roof...
