Onboarding ensures learning success through sharing and acquiring knowledge to remain competitive. However, little is known about new Information Technology (IT) hires' learning needs in the absence of onboarding; therefore, the purpose of this case study was to examine, increase, and retain their technical knowledge at the Unified Communications Company (UCC). Following the theoretical model of knowledge management, which holds that knowledge is the key to confirm learning and knowledge sharing, the research questions were used to examine how the company assessed and increased their technical knowledge and how they taught their culture in the absence of onboarding. A qualitative instrumental case study design was employed with a purposeful sample of 4 former employees who were former new IT hires at the UCC. These employees contributed to the study using journals, surveys, and interviews drawn from their experiences as new IT hires at the UCC. Reoccurring themes regarding formal learning were extracted from the data, validated through peer and member checking, and then triangulated with each round of data collection and the themes described in the literature. The themes of culture, onboarding, training, and experience/feedback consistently emerged as areas needing improvement and indicated a need for formalized training. Based on these findings, a job aid was created to provide enhanced performance and learning to offer knowledge throughout training. Companies employing new IT hires can use the results from this study to provide onboarding in addition to their current orientation. The use of these data would positively affect social change by enhancing company competitiveness and job retention while reducing overall unemployment and the skills gap.

Within the professional field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), it is not unusual for highly qualified instructors to teach several part-time jobs in order to support themselves. Despite advocacy efforts carried out by the international TESOL organization, finding rewarding full-time employment in the United States can be very challenging. In addition, with the current state of the economy and high unemployment, TESOL professionals like others in various fields are seeking stable employment. Although this research will not solve the lack of full-time jobs, the intention is to help job seekers better prepare themselves for today's job market by knowing the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics that employers are looking for in potential hires. To identify this information, a 12-month review was conducted of three well-established employment websites in an effort to capture advertisements seeking to hire TESOL professionals full-time for ESL related positions in the U.S. A total of 169 job advertisements were collected and reviewed to identify the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics employers were seeking in qualified individuals. Data from the advertisements were organized into a 42-category coding scheme in an effort to delineate the skills, knowledge, and job characteristics mentioned previously. In addition, a second coding scheme containing 12 categories was created for analyzing the personal characteristics listed in the advertisements Results from this data revealed that employers seek applicants who have knowledge and experience in curriculum development, teacher education, and program administration. Top skills include written and oral communication and basic computer skills. With regards to personal characteristics, employers are most interested in individuals possessing strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. In addition to these skills and qualifications, the data provide important insights concerning the distribution of jobs by job type, degree, institution type, and salary across five regions of the United States.

Despite being explored and constantly improved through the years, onboarding of new hires in corporate organizations has remained a challenge. Many of the issues can be linked to a lack of communication between the organization and the new employee, as well as the common nature of these environments where information is spread across job titles and sources. This thesis discusses the feasibility of implementing a basic chatbot that will allow new hires to ask questions and request varied information at all times, using an interface such as a messaging app. This research explores the way chatbots should be designed in order to be effective, reliable and enjoyable from a user experience perspective. The chatbot was developed using the Chatfuel platform and tested by new employees at a corporate environment. The users were requested to explore the chatbot freely and then asked to answer a survey. The interactions were also recorded and analyzed from in both qualitative and quantitative ways (chat logs and analytics). The study proves that an onboarding chatbot is a useful tool for new hires and can be used as a communication facilitator between the organization and the new hires during the first weeks of employment, and also after that, serving as an information source and a broadcasting method. The chatbot gives the new hires an accessible source of information that helps on the process of getting to speed, and enables a positive experience that increases familiarity in the new workplace.

Silurian strata of eastern North America have been thoroughly studied for nearly two centuries. Through these investigations a general understanding of unit distribution and correlative relationships were established throughout the region. Many of these interpretations remain valid still to this day, however, with advancements in stratigraphic methodologies in the last few decades (e.g., sequence-, chemo-, and biostratigraphy), numerous discrepancies have come to light with regards to the chronostratigraphic correlation of several stratigraphic intervals throughout the region. A number of these discrepancies within the lower Silurian (Llandovery—lower Wenlock) have been resolved in the last two decades permitting the establishment of refined depositional models and sequence stratigraphic hierarchies for strata deposited during this interval of time for the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan basins. Though these studies provided significant improvement to the chronostratigraphy of eastern North America, there remained a large under-evaluated stratigraphic interval spanning the remainder of the Silurian (Wenlock—Pridoli), which is host to expansive evaporite reserves and hydrocarbon resources throughout eastern North America. As such, it is critical that these strata are accurately and precisely correlated throughout the region and that temporal constraint be applied to these resources in order to evaluate their potential and develop predictive models for their future utilization. The investigation herein provides high-resolution chronostratigraphic analyses of several core and outcrop from the eastern, southwestern, and western margins of the Appalachian Basin. These analyses included the integration of δ13Ccarb chemostratigraphy, conodont biostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, and subsurface geophysical data. The work herein now permits the establishment of global series and stage boundaries for the upper Silurian throughout the Appalachian and Michigan basins and also addresses regional miscorrelations within strata on both the eastern and western margins of the Appalachian Basin to provide a united sequence stratigraphic hierarchy between the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan basins.

In this project we investigate the feasibility of detecting the signatures of Pop III stars in metal poor second generation stars and in gas clouds at high redshifts. First, the nucleosynthetic yields of Pair Instability Supernova and how they are manifested in gas clouds are presented. Next, some basic quantities of radio astronomy are explained and the requirements of SKA are shown. Then, the minimum detectable hydrogen column density of SKA for gas clouds at high redhsift is calculated and after that the basic principles of spectroscopy and the requirements of the HiReS instrument of E-ELT are demonstrated. Finally, suggestions about where the observations with HiReS should focus are made.

ABSTRACT This study compared lodging managers' job competency expectations for newly hired employees in possession of four-year (baccalaureate) degrees from a college or university. Lodging managers mentally separated new hires into two distinct categories when rating the importance of specific job competencies: 1) new hires in possession of a hospitality management baccalaureate degree, and 2) new hires in possession of a non-hospitality management baccalaureate degree. Lodging managers who were current members of the Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association (CFHLA) at the time of the survey participated and all were employed in the central Florida area at the time of the study. In the fall of 2004, lodging managers (N=156) were sent an electronic mail correspondence requesting participation. Usable responses were received from 137 lodging managers for a response rate of 87.82%. The survey instrument was developed from a literature review of hospitality job competencies and was refined to 3 content areas: knowledge, ability, and attitude. Research questions were designed to identify differences, if any, in lodging manager new hire expectations based upon several criteria: a) type of baccalaureate degree held by the new hire (hospitality management versus other field), b) gender of the manager, c) number of years the manager had worked in the lodging industry, d) whether or not the manager possessed a baccalaureate degree at the time of the survey, e) if the manager possessed a baccalaureate degree, whether the degree was hospitality or non-hospitality specific, and, f) the type of lodging facility employing the manager at the time of questionnaire completion. These comparisons were made between the two groups of new-hires with baccalaureate hospitality degrees and new-hires with non-hospitality baccalaureate degrees. Consistently, lodging managers rated higher expectations for new-hires when the newly hired employees possessed a baccalaureate degree in hospitality or lodging management versus a non-hospitality discipline. Ramifications of these findings are discussed pursuant to higher education hospitality programs, the lodging industry, and human resource professionals recruiting future lodging managers. Future research is suggested utilizing a wider regional, national, and/or international sample.

Sales management researchers and practitioners give considerable attention to early employment expectations, attitudes, and behaviors primarily because of a desire to specify the cognition process leading to performance and retention of salespeople. While a massive body of literature exists concerning turnover of employees and determinants of employee performance, more empirical study specific to the sales force as a research population is needed to assess the nature of turnover and performance. Because the bulk of salesperson turnover occurs in early employment, particular attention needs to be devoted to the cognitive process of newcomers to the sales force. The present work examines expectation-based and perception-oriented models of performance and retention for sales force new hires. Interests of this investigation focus on the initial expectations of newly hired sales representatives and on how the degree of fulfillment of these expectations relates to subsequent performance and retention behavior. Extant research suggests that the degree to which expectations are met positively influences mediating variables such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and indirectly influences outcomes such as job performance and retention of newcomers. Alternatively, some researchers contend that these results are due to improper measurement of met expectations. A longitudinal research design and alternative measurement methods are employed here to better assess the role of met/unmet expectations. The proposed study is based on theoretical research from a variety of academic disciplines, and the results of the study will have multi-disciplinary implications. Contributions include: (a) replication and extension of theoretical research concerning processes leading to performance and retention of sales force newcomers, (b) a thorough examination of met expectations as a precursor to early sales force outcomes, and (c) methodological advances in the measurement of met expectations.

Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att öka kunskapen gällande introduktionsprogrammets betydelse för företag, för att i förlängningen möjliggöra för företag att effektivisera sitt HR-arbete.   Metodik och teoretisk referensram: En kvalitativ fallstudie med en induktiv ansats. Det empiriska materialet har samlats in genom intervjuer och fokusgrupper på tre företag inom industribranschen. vår teoretiska referensram innefattar introduktionsprogram, personalomsättning och mentorskap.   Slutsats: Inom introduktionsprogrammet finns det vissa komponenter som är mer avgörande än andra. Vilka är: struktur, upplärning, information, sociala och informella aspekter samt uppföljning. I förlängningen kan denna kunskap användas av företag och möjliggöra att de kan effektivisera sitt HR-arbete.   Vilken betydelse introduktionsprogrammet har för ett företag påverkas av förutsättningar, behov och problem inom det specifika företaget. Vissa faktorer påverkar samt har en påverkan på introduktionsprogrammet. Faktorerna kan förbättras med ett introduktionsprogram men också påverkas negativt. I förlängningen påverkar introduktionsprogrammet företags förmåga att bland annat behålla och utveckla personal, vilket kan skapa möjligheter för konkurrensfördelar och ökad lönsamhet.
Purpose: The purpose of this field study is to examine what importance an onboarding program has for businesses. By extension, businesses can develop their HR-processes in line with the findings of this study.   Methodology and theoretical reference framework: A qualitative case study within the industrial field with an inductive approach. Three different organizations within the industrial field are examined in the study. The empirical material was collected through unstructured interviews and focus groups. The theoretical reference framework includes Onboarding program, Turnover rate and Mentorship.   Conclusion: The study highlights crucial components of an onboarding program which are: structure, on the job training, information, social and informal aspects and follow-up. This knowledge can be used to make HR-processes more efficient. The findings of this paper are that the onboarding program will have a long term impact on businesses.   The importance of an onboarding program depends on the business. Advantages such as a decreased turnover rate and a motivated workforce can be earned by develop and implement an effective onboarding program within the organization.

Dans ce travail de thèse, nous avons étudié la nucléation de dislocations depuis la surface d'un métal cfc sous contrainte, par le biais de simulations à l'échelles atomiques et de modèles basés sur la théorie élastique des dislocations. La nucléation depuis les surfaces, qui initie la plasticité dans les matériaux à l'échelle nanométrique, implique le franchissement d'une barrière d'énergie ; celui-ci se fait par activation thermique. Nous avons pu déterminer le rôle de différents facteurs, comme la température ou l'état de surface, sur l'évènement de nucléation. Plusieurs méthodes atomistiques ont été employées de concert pour déterminer les paramètres d'activation associés à la barrière d'énergie : le rayon critique que la dislocation doit atteindre pour devenir stable et se propager, l'énergie et le volume d'activation. Enfin, des éléments sur la cinétique des dislocations et sur les évènements plastiques subséquents à la nucléation ont pu être obtenus
In this PhD thesis, we studied the nucleation of dislocations from a surface in a fcc metal under stress, using atomic-scale simulations as well as models based on elastic theory of dislocations. Nucleation from surfaces, which initiate plasticity in nanometer-scale materials, requires the crossing of an energy barrier; this is possible through thermal activation. We were able to determine the role of different factors, such as temperature or the surface condition, on the nucleation event. Several atomistic methods were used to determine the activation parameters associated with the energy barrier: the critical radius the dislocations has to overcome in order to become stable and propagate, and the activation energy and volume. Finally, some information concerning dislocations dynamics and plastic phenomena subsequent to the nucleation process were obtained

"Chester Himes (1909-1984), écrivain tragique", est une analyse de la tragédie des oeuvres de Chester Himes. L'ouvrage a trois partie. La première partie s'ouvre sur des analyses sur la tragédie de l'histoire américaine, de la vie de Himes depuis l'Amérique jusqu'à son exil en France et en Espagne où il est mort en 1984. Puis, j'introduis les seize romans de mon aire de recherche. La deuxième partie est une réflexion sur la littérature orale, sur la monstruosité des villes américaines, sur le style annonçant la tragédie (métaphore, proverbe, analepse, prolepse). La troisième partie est consacrée à l'étude d'une trentaine de thèmes tragiques, dont la peur, la fuite, l'absurdité de la vie, la violence et l'eschatologie du héros de Himes. "Chester Himes, écrivain tragique", se ferme sur la négritude de Himes et son projet de révolution du monde noir en Amérique
"Chester Himes (1909-1984), a tragic writer" is an effort to analyse the tragedy described by Himes in his work. It has three parts. The first part opens with the framework of Himes's difficult life from America to his exile in France and Spain where he died in 1984. Then, I introduce his sixteen novels of our research area. The second part is a study of his oral literature, the monstrosity of the American cities and characters, the style announcing the tragedy (metaphor, proverb, analepsis, prolepsis). The third part is an effort to analyse thirty tragic themes, such as fear, flight, the absurdity of life, violence, the fate of Himes's heroes. "Chester Himes, a tragic writer" ends with Himes's idea of being a Black man, and his project of an unavoidable revolution in America

In 1997 a group of archaeologists from Texas A&M University's Nautical Archaeology Program traveled to Wasaga Beach, Ontario to document the hull remains of the eighteenth-century schooner Nancy. In 1927, the schooner was recovered from the banks of an island in the Nottawasaga River, near its confluence with Lake Huron. The hull is now on display in the Nancy Island Historic Site. Despite being available to the public for more than 75 years, the 1997 documentation was the first to thoroughly record the construction of the vessel. In addition to archaeological investigation, historical research was carried out to further our understanding of Nancy's commercial and naval career. The archaeological data reveal a schooner that was built by talented shipwrights using the fine timber harvested around the Great Lakes in the eighteenth-century. This study adds a considerable amount of new information to the otherwise scanty base of knowledge available on the construction of early Great Lakes sailing vessels. Historical research shows that Nancy and her crews were participants in many important events that shaped the Great Lakes Region. From her construction in Detroit in 1789, Nancy was employed in the fur trade. As tensions flared between Great Britain and the United States in 1812, Nancy was utilized as an armed transport for the British forces around the lakes. in August of 1814, the schooner was trapped in the Nottawasaga River by a strong American naval force. Nancy's commander set fire to the vessel to deny it to the enemy. This thesis examines the construction details and history of the schooner Nancy in detail. Preliminary chapters will provide the historical context for the vessel and describe Nancy's long journey that ended at the Nancy Island Historic Site. The second half of the thesis describes the construction of the schooner and compares it with other contemporary vessels. The study concludes that Nancy's hull represents an eighteeth-century construction tradition modified for use on the Great Lakes, and also demonstrates the vessel's dual roles as trader and military transport.

One of the major problems facing the meat and leather industries is dung cladding on hides. Dung dried onto hides is difficult to remove during the early stages of processing, resulting in the necessity for prolonging the soaking step, with the consequence of risking bacterial damage to the hides. Microscopic examination of dung on hide reveals that adhesion is between the dung and the hair alone, with no sticking of the dung to the epidermis. This accounts for the difficulty in removing dry dung; the matrix of the hair within the dung creates a strong composite material. Analysis shows that major components of the composition of dung are lignocellulosic materials (lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose). This project concerns solubilising the dung faster, to reduce soaking time by targeting these components with enzyme technology, using hemicellulases, cellulases, and laccases from commercial products and a range of fungal organisms (Coriolus versicolor and Aspergillus niger). Removal of dung from hide pieces is affected by the action of cellulase, xylanase and laccase separately over 20-24 hours. Mixture of these enzymes removes dung in 6-8 hours demonstrating that synergistic activity is more effective than separate enzyme treatments. When commercial enzyme mixture or Coriolus versicolor or Aspergillus niger cultural broths were used to effect dung removal in tannery drums in a larger scale experiment, in some cases the removal of dung was observed within 1 hour by the help of the mechanical action and nonionic surfactant. The enzyme treatment did not affect the components of hide, such as collagen, hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulphate and it was found that enzyme treated leathers and control samples showed no differences in terms of their physical characteristics. Investigations in the mechanism of dung removal by spectrophotometry, chromatography and chemical techniques show that the enzyme treatments remove the dung from hides without changing the fundamental structure of the substrate. The enzymes probably attack the structural parts in lignocellulose, which are most susceptible to solubilising with enzymes: these attacks make small changes in the carbohydrate and lignin contents, but these changes are powerful enough for effective dung removal

El presente informe tiene como objetivo estimar el valor de la compañía Empresas Hites S.A. mediante la utilización del método de valoración por múltiplos. Para lo anterior se trabajó sobre una base de datos correspondiente a los Estados Financieros de la empresa para el período comprendido entre los años 2009 y 2013 (este último con cifras a Septiembre, dado que a la fecha de realizado el estudio aún no se encontraban disponibles las cifras de cierre de año). Adicionalmente, se empleó otro tipo de información, donde destacan estudios de mercado, Estados Financieros de otras compañías de la industria, Memorias, etc. El método empleado corresponde a la Valorización por Múltiplos. Utilizando la información anteriormente descrita, se estima el valor de la compañía a través de la comparación de indicadores de la empresa con su competencia, los que comprenden variables tales como Ingresos, Utilidad, Ebitda, Patrimonio, entre otros. Luego de ponderar los indicadores por los resultados de las empresas de referencia de la industria, que en este caso es La Polar S.A., se obtuvo un precio de la acción que se encuentra en un rango de $ 178 y $ 352. Al cierre de las transacciones de la Bolsa de Comercio de Santiago al 30 de septiembre de 2013, el precio de esta acción era $ 462. De esta forma, se estima que el precio se encuentra por sobre su valor real, lo que se comprueba con la evolución que ha tenido durante el último tiempo, por lo que seguirá ajustándose en el futuro.

Private messaging over the Internet has proven challenging to implement, because even if message data is encrypted, it is difficult to hide metadata about who is communicating in the face of traffic analysis. Systems that offer strong privacy guarantees, such as Dissent [39], scale to only several thousand clients, because they use techniques with superlinear cost in the number of clients (e.g., each client broadcasts their message to all other clients). On the other hand, scalable systems, such as Tor, do not protect against traffic analysis, making them ineffective in an era of pervasive network monitoring. Vuvuzela is a new scalable messaging system that offers strong privacy guarantees, hiding both message data and metadata. Vuvuzela is secure against adversaries that observe and tamper with all network traffic, and that control all nodes except for one server. Vuvuzela's key insight is to minimize the number of variables observable by an attacker, and to use differential privacy techniques to add noise to all observable variables in a way that provably hides information about which users are communicating. Vuvuzela has a linear cost in the number of clients, and experiments show that it can achieve a throughput of 68,000 messages per second for 1 million users with a 37-second end-to-end latency on commodity servers.

A literatura anterior tem vindo a estudar os Directores Gerais e as startups separadamente, sendo o tema de estudo ignorado. Pretendemos contribuir para a literatura ao pesquisar em que momento as startups decidem contratar um Gestor Profissional e as transformações que daí ocorrerão. A revisão da literatura refere: se as startups contratam ou não um Gestor Profissional, quais os determinantes para o contratar e, por fim, quais as características de um Gestor Profissional. Para esclarecer esta investigação, utilizamos dados recolhidos através de uma entrevista semi-estruturada e complementa-mo-la com fontes secundárias. A nossa amostra inclui startups incubadas na região de Lisboa, que contrataram um Gestor Profissional ou que permaneceram com os fundadores iniciais no papel de CEO (Gestor Fundador). A nossa principal conclusão indica que o Gestor Fundador tem habilidades de liderança incomparáveis e ao ser crucial na vida de uma startup, a longo prazo, as empresas geralmente permanecem com estes no papel de Director Geral.
This study evaluates the factors that drive a founder to hire a Chief Executive Officer (Professional CEO) for its start-up. Previous literature have studied CEOs and start-ups, separately, being the study topic itself ignored. We aim to contribute to the literature by researching in which moment the startups decide to hire a Professional CEO and the transformations that from there will occur. The literature review refers to: startups hire or not a Professional-CEO, which are the determinants to hire him/her and finally, which are the characteristics of a Professional-CEO. To enlighten this investigation, we use data collected through a semi-structured interview and complement it with secondary sources. Our sample includes startups incubated in the region of Lisbon, which hired a Professional CEO or remained with the initial founders in the role of CEO (Founder-CEO). Our major findings indicate that as Founder-CEO have unmatched leadership skills and are crucial in the life of a startup, in the long-term, the ventures usually remain with them in the role of Chief Executive Officers.

To many Americans Duncan Hines (1880-1959) is just a name on a cake mix package. Few would suspect that in the 1940s and 1950s Duncan Hines was the most trusted name in the food industry. In the early twentieth century Hines was a traveling salesman of printing wares who was keenly interested in discovering safe places to eat during the course of his business excursions. He eventually became well-known among the public for his specialized knowledge of the locations of superior dining facilities. In 1936 he began publishing this information annually in a restaurant guide. By the end of the decade, Hines had become the best known and most trusted dining authority in America. Hines used his influence to reform the restaurant industry, particularly in the area of sanitation. In an era when Americans dined out infrequently, Hines popularized the idea that Americans should eat more of their meals outside the home. He also shaped the American expectation that dining out should be seen as a form of entertainment. For a host of reasons, the experience of the Second World War expanded his influence throughout America. After World War II researchers discovered that in all matters of food-not just restaurants-housewives trusted Hines more than any other authority. This discovery led Hines to form a partnership with businessman Roy Park. Together they established Hines-Park Foods, which eventually distributed over two-hundred Duncan Hines products. The company was highly successful and was purchased by the Procter and Gamble Corporation in 1956, leaving Duncan Hines a lasting legacy, if in name only.

Child abuse and neglect in the United States resulted in 676,569 reports in 2011 (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, 2012). Workers in this field struggle with low pay, high caseloads, inadequate training and supervision, and risk of violence, all of which contribute to worker burnout and poor worker retention rates. Worker self- efficacy is predictive of worker retention, job performance, and persistence in this difficult field. This paper reports the development of a new measure of self-efficacy from a sample of 395 child welfare workers. Factor analysis revealed two domains of self- efficacy, direct practice and indirect practice, which can be modestly predicted by worker characteristics upon hire and the training program the workers attend. Worker self- efficacy can be used to identify vulnerable workers who may be especially in need of strong supervisory support as well as understand who to target for recruitment. A review of the literature of self-efficacy in child welfare workers is included.

The inability of business owners to hire skilled employees affects the profitability of a small business. Small business owners may attain profitability by understanding the value of military veterans and cultivating strategies for the hiring and recruitment process. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that business owners in Fayetteville, North Carolina used to recruit military veterans as a means to acquire skilled employees to maximize productivity, profitability, and sustainability. The conceptual framework of this study included human capital theory and recruitment theory. The purposive sample consisted of 6 participants who were small business owners. Data from interviews and supporting documents were processed and analyzed using data source triangulation to identify 3 emergent themes. Findings indicated that, for these 6 Fayetteville small business owners, job description and transition workshops, resume review and communication, and accommodations and benefits were key attributes related to the successful recruitment of military veterans as skilled employees. Specifically, streamlined hiring processes, relationship building, and access to resources were predictive of a successful hire. Knowledge barriers regarding hiring processes prevented efficient communication between small business owners and military veterans, but business owners cultivated strategies to help with hiring military veterans. The implications for positive social change include the potential for business owners to capitalize on the skills that military veterans bring to the civilian workforce, which in turn may improve the economy.

This thesis explores why shaʿbī (roughly, ‘ordinary’) Moroccans so often talk about their domestic workers as daughters, what this means for workers and employers, and how this is changing as community gives way to market. It brings together ethnographic study of urban shaʿbī society, of unmarried rural women who work as domestics, and of the communities from which the latter migrate. Drawing on anthropological discussions of kinship and fosterage, the thesis examines the fading tradition of ‘bringing up’ in which, according to a moral economy, a ‘known’ rural girl could properly be placed in the homes of wealthier Moroccans until marriage. This is giving way to new arrangements in which ‘unknown’ workers are paid a wage and may not stay long, but in which the ethics of charity, religious reward and gratitude still inform expectations from both sides. Geared to play out among neighbours, or at least well-known clients, over a lifetime, these ethics are being disrupted by the easy-come-easy-go of strangers. The thesis contributes to some fundamental concerns of economic anthropology: the atomisation of market exchange, the growing importance of physical marketplaces, and the meanings encoded in a monetary wage versus payment in kind. By putting together perspectives from domestics’ leisure time and life back home, it also questions the relationship between the commodification of labour and individualism. Finally, the thesis discusses a draft law which, if enforced, would mean employing domestics no longer made sense for shaʿbī Moroccans, state intervention respresenting a move away from local forms of empowerment and community. At a broader level, the thesis is concerned with households as internally hierarchical units linked together through exchange to make up society and explores the gendered dimension of household economy in a wider world. This, of course, reaches beyond Morocco, and parallels are suggested with English domestic service.

To avoid environmental pressure from water authorities, specifically regarding nitrogen and sulfate limits in tannery wastewater, modifications to existing deliming processes have been made. Conventional ammonium salt deliming methods contribute to Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen values in the region of 0.5 – 1.0g/L (33-67% of total TKN). Sulfate levels are increased with the use of organic deliming and ammonium sulfate deliming to the extent of 0.9g/L (27% of total sulfate). To understand the dynamics and kinetics of carbon dioxide equilibrium, the movement of carbon dioxide into deliming water, through carbonic acid, bicarbonate and ultimately into carbonates at liming or early deliming pH was studied. It was shown in this study that effective lime removal, at optimum conditions, resulted in fully delimed pelts at highly comparable quality and times compared to conventional ammonium salt deliming

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of indirect coercion as an element of Political Warfare and as a policy option for the United States. This thesis synthesizes the concepts of indirect strategy and coercion to provide a cost-effective policy option for U.S. decision makers. In order to establish the strategic utility of indirect coercion, this thesis examines the conditions that are necessary for successful coercion of an adversary using limited military and economic resources. This thesis examines four historical cases of indirect coercion. The cases examined are Indonesia, Italy, and Chile during the early Cold War era, and Hezbollah as an ongoing case—to explore the varying outcomes, from success to complete failure. Food safety is a critical issue for beef harvest operations. There are multiple interventions available for treating carcasses; however, this project was designed to evaluate an intervention capable of reducing bacterial counts on the hide prior to opening in order to minimize carcass contamination. In Trial I, fresh beef hides (n = 12) were cut into sections and assigned to serve as either clipped (hair trimmed) or non-clipped sections. Sections were inoculated with a bovine fecal slurry and sampled following a water wash. Treatments (distilled water, isopropyl alcohol, 3% hydrogen peroxide, 2% L-lactic acid, 1% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and 10% Povidone-iodine) then were applied to each section and sampled for aerobic plate counts (APCs), coliform, and Escherichia coli counts. Within clipped samples, 1% CPC and 3% hydrogen peroxide caused the greatest reductions in aerobic plate counts, and 1% CPC, 2% L-lactic acid, and 3% hydrogen peroxide showed among the greatest reductions in coliform counts. In Trial II, beef carcasses with hides on were sampled initially and clipped, and then antimicrobials (2% L-lactic acid, 3% hydrogen peroxide, and 1% CPC) were applied before sampling again for APC, coliform, and E. coli counts. This procedure was replicated in Trial II utilizing a non-pathogenic E. coli Type I indicator strain transformed to produce a green fluorescing protein (GFP). In Trial II, though few differences existed between antimicrobial treatments, all three (1% CPC, 2% L-lactic acid, and 3% hydrogen peroxide) resulted in approximately a 2-log10 CFU/100-cm2GFP reduction when applied to clipped hide surfaces in the brisket region of the carcass. In Trial III, 1% CPC produced the greatest reduction on the hide surface for APCs. In Trial IV clipped beef hide sections were sampled initially and then antimicrobials (2% L-lactic acid, 3% hydrogen peroxide, and 1% CPC) were applied before sampling again to determine reduction. Trial IV also involved the use of the E. coli GFP indicator strain. In Trial IV, non-clipped samples had a mean reduction of 2.8 log10 CFU/100 cm2, and clipped samples had a mean reduction of 2.2 log10 CFU/100 cm2. Within the antimicrobials tested, 1% CPC and 3% hydrogen peroxide produced the greatest reductions.
