Résumé :
Port’s seaside accessibility is one of the two most important factors influencing decisions of shipping lines for choosing or rejection the use of the port. The landside accessibility is connected to level of service which the port can offer in hinterland traffic. Both factors together have an enormous impact on port’s competitive position on the market. The paper contains overview of problems of ensuring accessibility of the port of Hamburg for container ships as well as rail or road transportation in order to maintain the current high role of Hamburg in container traffic to and from the Northern Europe.

Résumé :
The article presents an innovative method of evaluating public transport accessibility. The evaluation is based on a simulation of the usability of public transport in real everyday situations. It measures the amount of time the residents of local communities need when they use public transport to reach various commonly used destinations at a specified time. The method’s main advantage is that it aims at reflecting everyday use of public transport. I demonstrate the use of the method by exploratory accessibility mapping, comparison of regions, and demonstration of the usability of partial indicators. Analysis results reveal the basic spatial patterns of public transport accessibility in Czechia: better accessibility in Moravia than Bohemia, good accessibility in the hinterland of large cities, and impaired accessibility in inner peripheries. Accessibility varies significantly depending on the time of day. The results also allow us to deduce how much of the population experience difficulties using public transport due to impaired accessibility.

Résumé :
Vegetation in natural desert hinterland oases is an important component of terrestrial ecosystems. Determining how desert vegetation responds to natural variability is critical for a better understanding of desertification processes and their future development. The aim of this study is to characterize the spatial distribution of vegetation in the natural desert hinterland and to reveal how different environmental factors affect vegetation changes. Taking a Taklamakan Desert hinterland oasis as our research object, we analyzed the effects of different environmental factors on desert vegetation using a time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) combined with meteorological, topographic, and hydrological data, including surface water and groundwater data. Vegetation was distributed in areas with high surface water frequency, shallow groundwater levels, relatively flat terrain, and dune basins. NDVI datasets show greening trends in oasis areas over the past 20 years. The frequency of surface water distribution influences water accessibility and effectiveness and shapes topography, thus affecting the spatial distribution pattern of vegetation. In this study, areas of high surface water frequency corresponded with vegetation distribution. The spatial distribution of groundwater depth supports the growth and development of vegetation, impacting the pattern of vegetation growth conditions. Vegetation is most widely distributed in areas where the groundwater burial depth is 3.5–4.5 m. This study provides data for restoring riparian vegetation, ecological water transfer, and sustainable development.

Résumé :
Improving the accessibility of coal transportation is a crucial issue for energy security, national defense, and livelihoods. In this study, a method to evaluate the performance of the port-centric coal transportation chain (PCTC), which is a crucial part of the international coal production and delivery process, is proposed. After analyzing the features of the port-centric coal transportation chain, a practical accessibility evaluation model is established based on the gravity model. Both the foreland and hinterland features are considered in the model. Based on the features of coal transportation, the concept of port operational adaptability is introduced to indicate the port’s ability to manage a fluctuating irregular workload. Moreover, environmental factors, including transportation emissions and dust pollution, are included in the evaluation system. Based on real data collected from China’s north-south coal transportation corridor, a case study presents the implementation of this comprehensive evaluation system in practice. This evaluation system enables us to determine the vulnerable areas in the coal maritime transportation network and provides a decision-making basis for both shippers and port owners.

This thesis proposes an analysis focused both on inter-port relations and on those governing the international maritime trade elements: ports, hinterland and foreland. In the first chapter, an assessment on hierarchies and relative growth in Europe is made by applying two complementary methods: Markov chains and convergence clubs. These show that there is a growth polarization within a limited number of large ports and a high frequency for those most disadvantaged. This result marks the lack of convergence within European ports. In addition, the phenomenon of "peripheral port challenge" would be exercised here by the small ports on the medium-sized ones, which would strongly contest some literature results on this issue. The second chapter highlights the importance of the relationship between the port and its hinterland and maritime environments. It focuses on the spatial aspect that characterizes these relationships and shows existing disparities between port regions. While Northern Europe is characterized by complementarity, Southern ports have competitive relationships. It also shows that the size of the local market and its proximity to the ports are not systematically good determinants of throughput. However, the accessibility to the market from peripheral port regions is a determining factor and can be explained by the existence of market niches within these areas. The third chapter focuses on maritime connectivity by country, its determinants and the spatial effects that can influence this. The analysis reveals that there are substantial differences between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It allows, beyond the results of literature, to identify the dominant relationships in each region. Although complementarity and competition may coexist between neighboring ports/countries, this study shows that one may prevail over the other

Résumé :
Blessed with numerous safe harbours, accessible ports, and a rich hinterland, Gujarat has been central to the history of Indian Ocean maritime exchange that involved not only goods, but also people and ideas. This volume maps the trajectory of the extra-continental interactions of Gujarat and how it shaped the history of Indian Ocean. Chronologically, the volume spans two millennia, and geographically, it ranges from the Red Sea to Southeast Asia. The book focuses on specific groups of Gujarati traders, their accessibility and trading activities with maritime merchants from Africa, Arabia, Southeast Asia, China, and Europe. It not only analyses the complex process of commodity circulation, involving a host of players, huge investments, and numerous commercial operations, but also engages with questions of migration and diaspora. Paying close attention to current historiographical debates, the contributors make serious efforts to challenge the neat regional boundaries that are often drawn around the trading history of Gujarat.

Résumé :
AbstractDeep sea container transport is despite the existence of various crisis situations a worldwide steady growing business and as a result seaports need to handle ever growing container volumes. Transporting these containers with as little as possible emissions, efficiently and in a reliable manner from the seaport into the hinterland has strategic importance for the attractiveness and hence the competitiveness and growth potential of a container seaport. For ports having access to the hinterland by inland waterways, inland shipping is a mode to contribute to hinterland accessibility and to provide a more environmental- friendly and safer solutions for hinterland transport compared to truck transport, which is still very dominant. The physical as well as the informational interfaces between the seaport and the hinterland modalities (truck, train and inland vessel) appear to have significant importance for the overall cost and quality performance of the hinterland transport chain, in particular on relatively short transport distance. Several container seaports world-wide have a well-developed hinterland transport system for container barges, but are facing inefficient handling processes of inland vessels in the seaport which cause tempered growth of container inland shipping. This paper discusses different causes for inefficient handling of container inland vessels in seaports and evaluates initiatives, proposals and necessary actions for improvement. These matters are discussed in the context of the major Northwest-European container seaports. Solutions can be found both in organisational, information-based and technical improvements. These improvements are jointly needed to realise the growth ambitions for container inland shipping.

AbstractThe true effect of the pandemic will not be felt for many years. However, the present effect of the pandemic has resulted in a digital canyon between the haves and have nots concerning accessibility to devices and Internet connectivity. Rural school communities are feeling the effects of the pandemic. This qualitative methodology, based on the descriptive phenomenology approach, examined the views of a purposive sampling of 12 secondary school teachers who are teaching in rural Guyana (hinterland) regions, in order to understand some of the issues they and their students are facing. The issues were learning loss, the COVID slide, and digital divide. In order to mitigate these effects the teachers have been using first- and second-generation media (community boards, radio, and supermarket distribution sites). Their resilience and grit are evidenced as they continue the education process. Rural communities have galvanized into action to provide spaces for sharing worksheets and to ensure that no child is left behind.

Résumé :
India’s flourishing trade and production economy in the late medieval times has been well studied, particularly from the point of view of the variety of goods that were exported across the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. In this context, the ports, particularly those of Gujarat and the Coromandel Coast, have received considerable attention. This chapter seeks to examine the nature of Gujarat’s connections to the hinterland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Surat, it is well known, was the port of the Mughal Empire; but what about ports like Cambay, or other towns like Ahmedabad or Baroda? What were their connections to the interior? Are there indications of merchants shifting from, for example, Cambay to Surat, as the former port declined in importance? The chapter, thus, focuses on the accessibility, contact, or reach of Gujarati merchants to different places in India.

Résumé :
In 2006, in the Netherlands the Betuweline will be realized between the port of Rotterdam and the German Hinterland. The Betuweline is a dedicated high-speed freight railway for all kinds of freight transport, including hazardous materials. The Betuweline crosses multiple built environments and comprises 5 tunnels. As a result, safety is a main issue for various stakeholders such as railway engineers, spatial planners and emergency responders. For this railway, however, the juridical character of the safety topics differs widely from (hard) legal risk criteria such as individual risk to (soft) safety guidelines such as accessibility by emergency responders. In this article, safety topics of the Betuweline are described and analyzed with regard to the available laws and guidelines in order to search for opportunities to reduce societal risk and society’s vulnerability.
