Résumé :
The efficient analysis and exploration of mapping solutions of a parallel application on a heterogeneous Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) is usually a challenging task in system-level design, in particular when the architecture integrates hardware cores that may expose reconfigurable features. This paper proposes a system-level design framework based on SystemC simulations for fulfilling this task, featuring (i) an automated flow for the generation of timing models for the hardware cores starting from the application source code, (ii) an enhanced simulation environment for SystemC architectures enabling the specification and modification of mapping choices only by changing an XML descriptor, and (iii) a flexible controller of the simulation environment supporting the exploration of various mapping solutions featuring a customizable engine. The proposed framework has been validated with a case study considering an image processing application to show the possibility to automatically exploring alternative solutions onto a reconfigurable MPSoC platform.

Résumé :
We present a modular platform simulation environment to estimate the energy consumption and performance of distributed systems in a Systems-on-Chip context. We use the simulation environment to support the development of our high-level design methodologies. More in particular, we steer and verify the development of a task-level data transfer and storage methodology, the development of a task-level scheduling methodology and the development of an instruction memory management methodology. All of these methodologies are focussed on reducing the overall energy consumption of the complex dynamic system on a heterogeneous platform architecture. Compared to research in the academic and industrial context, our contribution is to integrate in a scalable way existing energy and performance simulators of the components of a heterogeneous multiprocessor SoC. Also a novel instruction memory hierarchy is included. The simulation environment consists of multiple processing nodes connected to a distributed memory hierarchy. To reduce the energy consumption of the system, both the processing nodes as well as the memory architecture can be varied: the processing voltage of each node can be tuned and the memory hierarchy can be fully customized. The integration of dynamic real-time applications on this platform is simplified by the availability of a multi-processor RTOS. The use of the simulator to develop our high-level design methodologies is illustrated on real-life multimedia applications.

Résumé :
The growing complexity of embedded and cyber-physical systems makes the design of all system components from scratch increasingly impractical. Consequently, already from early stages of a design flow, designers rely on prior experience, which comes in the form of legacy code or third-party intellectual property (IP) blocks. Current approaches partly address the co-simulation problem for specific scenarios in an ad hoc style. This work suggests a general method for co-simulation of heterogeneous IPs with a system modeling and simulation framework. The external IPs can be integrated as high-level models running in an external simulator or as software- and hardware-in-the-loop simulation with minimal effort. Examples of co-simulation scenarios for wrapping models with different semantics are presented together with their practical usage in two case studies. The presented method is also used to formulate a refinement-by-replacement workflow for IP-based system design.

Résumé :
In the research and development of intelligent prosthesis, some of performance test experiments are required. In order to provide an ideal experimental platform for the performance test of intelligent prosthesis, a heterogeneous biped walking robot model is proposed. Artificial leg is an important part of heterogeneous biped walking robot, and its main function is to simulate the disabled a healthy normal gait, which provides intelligent bionic legs gait to follow the target trajectory. The pneumatic artificial muscles (PAM) have good application in the artificial leg. The bionic design of artificial leg mainly includes the structure of hip joint, knee joint, and ankle joint, adopting the four-bar mechanism as the mechanical structure of the knee joint, and PAM are used as the driving source of the knee joint. Secondly, the PAM performance test platform is built to establish the relationship among output force, shrinkage rate, and input pressure under the measured isobaric conditions, and the mathematical model of PAM is established. Finally, the virtual prototype technology is used to build a joint simulation platform, and PID control algorithm is used for verification simulation. The results show that the artificial leg can follow the target trajectory.

Résumé :
Most modeling and simulation (M&S) questions about cyber-physical systems (CPSs) require expert skills belonging to different scientific fields. The challenges are then to integrate each domain’s tools (formalism and simulation software) within the rigorous framework of M&S process. To answer this issue, we give the specifications of the Multi-agent Environment for Complex-SYstem CO-simulation (MECSYCO) middleware which enables to interconnect several pre-existing and heterogeneous M&S tools, so they can simulate a whole CPS together. The middleware performs the co-simulation in a parallel, decentralized, and distributable fashion thanks to its modular multi-agent architecture. In order to rigorously integrate tools that use different formalisms, the co-simulation engine of MECSYCO is based on the discrete event system specification (DEVS). The central idea of MECSYCO is to use a DEVS wrapping strategy to integrate each tool into the middleware. Thus, heterogeneous tools can be homogeneously co-simulated in the form of a DEVS system. By using DEVS, MECSYCO benefits from the numerous scientific works which have demonstrated the integrative power of this formalism and give crucial guidelines to rigorously design wrappers. We demonstrate that our discrete framework can integrate a vast amount of continuous M&S tools by wrapping the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) standard. To this end, we take advantage of DEVS efforts of the literature (namely, the DEV&DESS hybrid formalism and Quantized State System (QSS) solvers) to design DEVS wrappers for Functional Mockup Unit (FMU) components. As a side-effect, this wrapping is not restricted to MECSYCO but can be applied in any DEVS-based platform. We evaluate MECSYCO with the proof of concept of a smart heating use case, where we co-simulate non-DEVS-centric M&S tools.

Résumé :
Fast yet accurate performance and timing prediction of complex parallel data flow applications on multi-processor systems remains a very difficult discipline. The reason for it comes from the complexity of the data flow applications w.r.t. data dependent execution paths and the hardware platform with shared resources, like buses and memories. This combination may lead to complex timing interferences that are difficult to express in pure analytical or classical simulation-based approaches. In this work, we propose the combination of timing measurement and statistical simulation models for probabilistic timing and performance prediction of Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) applications on MPSoCs with shared memories. We exploit the separation of computation and communication in our SDF model of computation to set-up simulation-based performance prediction models following different abstraction approaches. We especially propose a message-level communication model driven by a data-dependent probabilistic execution phase timing model. We compare our work against measurement on two case-studies from the computer vision domain: a Sobel filter and a JPEG decoder. We show that the accuracy and execution time of our modeling and evaluation framework outperforms existing approaches and is suitable for a fast yet accurate design space exploration.

Résumé :
Based on the specific circumstances of colleges and universities, this study presents the moral education management system and leverages multisource sensor data and other technologies to develop an information system in line with the moral education management of modern college students. Using multisource sensor data fusion and learning data definition, the fused education data is expressed in a standardized way, resulting in a common and standard data interchange format. This foundation is used to build a shareable and reusable data management system that enables data sharing and interchange across multiple heterogeneous data sources, aids the intelligent education system in obtaining more comprehensive and complete recorded data, and improves data sharing timeliness. As a result, learning behavior analysis results are more objective, immediate, and accurate, allowing the intelligent education system’s response to be more prompt and intelligent. This study, which is based on multisource sensor data fusion, also discusses platform selection, system architecture, database design, and methods and suggestions for overcoming critical challenges and can be used as a reference for other university information management systems with vast amounts of data.

Résumé :
High-performance reconfigurable computers (HPRCs) provide a mix of standard processors and FPGAs to collectively accelerate applications. This introduces new design challenges, such as the need for portable programming models across HPRCs and system-level verification tools. To address the need for cosimulating a complete heterogeneous application using both software and hardware in an HPRC, we have created a tool called the Message-passing Simulation Framework (MSF). We have used it to simulate and develop an interface enabling an MPI-based approach to exchange data between X86 processors and hardware engines inside FPGAs. The MSF can also be used as an application development tool that enables multiple FPGAs in simulation to exchange messages amongst themselves and with X86 processors. As an example, we simulate a LINPACK benchmark hardware core using an Intel-FSB-Xilinx-FPGA platform to quickly prototype the hardware, to test the communications. and to verify the benchmark results.

Résumé :
This paper presents a two-step methodology for the bi-objective optimization design of heterogeneous injection mold cooling systems to achieve simultaneously fast and uniform cooling. During the first step, a single fundamental mold material selected from the material database is assumed, optimal cooling channels size, location, and coolant flow rate are obtained through a gradient-based optimization method. Based on the optimal results from the first step, the second step further reduces cooling time and increases temperature distribution uniformity at ejection by finding sensitive areas and distributing both fundamental and secondary materials in these areas through a genetic algorithm. A Finite Element Method with the Jacobi Conjugate Gradient scheme is utilized to perform the cyclic and transient cooling simulation. Two illustrations for the optimal methodology are provided.

Résumé :
Network-on-chip (NoC) based multi-processor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs) are promising candidates for future multi-processor embedded platforms, which are expected to be composed of hundreds of heterogeneous processing elements (PEs) to potentially provide high performances. However, together with the performances, the systems complexity will increase, and new high level design techniques will be needed to efficiently model, simulate, debug and synthesize them. System-level design (SLD) is considered to be the next frontier in electronic design automation (EDA). It enables the description of embedded systems in terms of abstract functions and interconnected blocks. A promising complementary approach to SLD is the use of models of computation (MoCs) to formally describe the execution semantics of functions and blocks through a set of rules. However, also when this formalization is used, there is no clear way to synthesize system-level models into software (SW) and hardware (HW) towards a NoC-based MPSoC implementation, i.e., there is a lack of system design automation (SDA) techniques to rapidly synthesize and prototype system-level models onto heterogeneous NoC-based MPSoCs. In addition, many of the proposed solutions require large overhead in terms of SW components and memory requirements, resulting in complex and customized multi-processor platforms. In order to tackle the problem, a novel model-based SDA flow has been developed as part of the thesis. It starts from a system-level specification, where functions execute according to the synchronous MoC, and then it can rapidly prototype the system onto an FPGA configured as an heterogeneous NoC-based MPSoC. In the first part of the thesis the HeartBeat model is proposed as a model-based technique which fills the abstraction gap between the abstract system-level representation and its implementation on the multiprocessor prototype. Then details are provided to describe how this technique is automated to rapidly prototype the modeled system on a flexible platform, permitting to adjust the system specification until the designer is satisfied with the results. Finally, the proposed SDA technique is improved defining a methodology to automatically explore possible design alternatives for the modeled system to be implemented on a heterogeneous NoC-based MPSoC. The goal of the exploration is to find an implementation satisfying the designer's requirements, which can be integrated in the proposed SDA flow. Through the proposed SDA flow, the designer is relieved from implementation details and the design time of systems targeting heterogeneous NoC-based MPSoCs on FPGA is significantly reduced. In addition, it reduces possible design errors proposing a completely automated technique for fast prototyping. Compared to other SDA flows, the proposed technique targets a bare-metal solution, avoiding the use of an operating system (OS). This reduces the memory requirements on the FPGA platform comparing to related work targeting MPSoC on FPGA. At the same time, the performance (throughput) of the modeled applications can be increased when the number of processors of the target platform is increased. This is shown through a wide set of case studies implemented on FPGA.

Kotsopoulos, Konstantinos. « Managing Next Generation Networks (NGNs) based on the Service-Oriented Architechture (SOA) : design, development and testing of a message-based network management platform for the integration of heterogeneous management systems ». Thesis, University of Bradford, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/5264.

Résumé :
Next Generation Networks (NGNs) aim to provide a unified network infrastructure to offer multimedia data and telecommunication services through IP convergence. NGNs utilize multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies, creating a converged packet-switched network infrastructure, where service-related functions are separated from the transport functions. This requires significant changes in the way how networks are managed to handle the complexity and heterogeneity of NGNs. This thesis proposes a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based management framework that integrates heterogeneous management systems in a loose coupling manner. The key benefit of the proposed management architecture is the reduction of the complexity through service and data integration. A network management middleware layer that merges low level management functionality with higher level management operations to resolve the problem of heterogeneity was proposed. A prototype was implemented using Web Services and a testbed was developed using trouble ticket systems as the management application to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed framework. Test results show the correcting functioning of the system. It also concludes that the proposed framework fulfils the principles behind the SOA philosophy.

Last decade research on Embedded Systems has been heavily pushed by the desire to create smarter infrastructures, environments and, in general, a smarter planet. Embedded devices have been employed to perform monitoring, control and communication in order “to embed” intelligence into widely distributed physical environments. This led to the introduction of new kinds of systems such as Cyber-Physical Systems, Smart Systems, Sensory Swarm, Internet of Things and many others, all characterized by a huge amount of heterogeneity. This heterogeneity is introduced in different aspects of the design. First of all, the sub-parts composing these systems belong to different design domains, such as digital and analog HW, embedded SW, networking, mechanical or chemical processes, thus requiring heterogeneous expertise and different tools typical of every domain involved. Moreover, distinct abstraction levels must be considered during the design process and they should be brought together into unique heterogeneous models. Finally, different design concerns, such as power consumption or reliability, affect the design quality due to the often safety-critical target of these systems. To take care of this heterogeneity, many approaches have been proposed in the field of systems engineering. However, in the recent years Platform-Based Design, has emerged subsuming all the previous approaches. It aims at providing both the advantages of bottom-up and top-down approaches. It provides support for different abstraction levels, allows the separation of concerns and enhances compositional design. However, the state of the art lacks of practical frameworks and approaches that allow for both easy reuse of pre-designed components and fast system-level simulation. This thesis aims at covering this lack by proposing a unifying approach to reconcile the heterogeneous components composing a system, into a unified homogeneous executable representation. Thus, the proposed design flow starts from the high-level specification of the functionalities the system must implements, and a library of already implemented components. The models composing both the high-level specification and the library of components are heterogeneous in the sense that they can be expressed with different formalisms and languages, levels of abstraction or belonging to different design domains. Then, through a set of translation, abstraction and manipulation techniques, the approach creates a behavioral model of the system as an executable specification. This will provide fast system-level simulation, thus positively impacting all the design steps relying on simulation techniques. Automation is provided by implementing the methodologies proposed by this thesis within translation, manipulation and abstraction tools on top of a homogeneous framework called HIFSuite. The most positive consequence of the adoption of this approach is the chance to re-use typical techniques developed for the design of homogeneous devices (e.g., digital HWdesign), by extending them to the case of heterogeneous systems.

The driving simulator is a great integrated system which can be divided into four subsystems, including vehicle dynamics systems, computer graphs, motion platform systems, and washout filter systems. This dissertation focuses on the construction of a high-performance motion platform system with a more realistic washout algorithm for human sensation. A smooth sliding mode backstepping control approach for the motion control of a Stewart platform is proposed. The control scheme is proposed provided that the overall system parameters are subject to uncertainties and only the positions and velocities of the links are measurable. To achieve high-performance tracking control of a 6 DOF Stewart platform normally requires the full knowledge of the system dynamics. In this dissertation, some important properties of the dynamics of the Stewart platform have been derived and exploited to develop a smooth sliding mode backstepping controller which can drive the motion tracking error to zero asymptotically. Stability analysis based on Lyapunov theory is performed to guarantee that the controller design is stable. Finally, the experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our control design. After that, a new approach is presented to develop washout filters for the simulators. It is based on the human vestibular model, limited workspace of the motion platform, and the senseless maneuver compensator at the same time for designing a washout filter such that a cost function constraining the pilot’s sensation error (between the simulator and the simulated vehicle) is minimized. The strong sensations experienced by the pilot can be curtailed, and the platform workspace for presenting the desired scenario is more efficient than others. Finally, the simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm designed, and hence the merits of the present approach can be manifested. To avoid dizzy feeling caused by the conflict between the visual and the vestibular systems, a novel integrated model is proposed which includes models of both vestibular and visual motion sensation and incorporates the nonlinear interaction between the vestibular and visual stimuli. Models for both rotational and translational motions are developed, producing responses that explain the characteristics of self-motion. Based on this novel model, we propose a human vestibular-visual based (HVVB) adaptive washout algorithm to avoid dizzy feeling caused by the conflict between visual and vestibular systems. Finally, the simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, thus manifesting the advantages of the present approach.

Résumé :
AbstractIn modern societies, the rampant growth of data management technologies—that have access to data sources from a plethora of heterogeneous systems—enables data analysts to leverage their advantages to new areas and critical infrastructures. However, there is no global reference standard for data platform technology. Data platforms scenarios are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity at all levels (middleware, application service, data/semantics, scalability, and governance), preventing deployment, federation, and interoperability of existing solutions. Although many initiatives are dealing with developing data platform architectures in diversified application domains, not many projects have addressed integration in port environments with the possibility of including cognitive services. Unlike other cases, port environment is a complex system that consists of multiple heterogeneous critical infrastructures, which are connected and dependent on each other. The key pillar is to define the design of a secure interoperable system facilitating the exchange of data through standardized data models, based on common semantics, and offering advanced interconnection capabilities leading to cooperation between different IT/IoT/Objects platforms. This contribution deals with scalability, interoperability, and standardization features of data platforms from a business point of view in a smart and cognitive port case study. The main goal is to design an innovative platform, named DataPorts, which will overcome these obstacles and provide an ecosystem where port authorities, external data platforms, transportation, and logistics companies can cooperate and create the basis to offer cognitive services. The chapter relates to knowledge and learning as well as to systems, methodologies, hardware, and tools cross-sectorial technology enablers of the AI, Data and Robotics Strategic Research, Innovation & Deployment Agenda (Milano et al., Strategic research, innovation and deployment agenda - AI, data and robotics partnership. Résumé :
Mobile communication plays an important role in the future of communication systems. To meet personalized and intelligent requirements, mobile communication has evolved from single wireless cellular network to heterogeneous mobile communication network, including wireless cellular network, wireless local network, and wireless personal network. In the heterogeneous communication system, to entirely fulfill the spectrum resource complementary advantages of such a heterogeneous wireless network, the spectrum resource trade algorithm has attracted tremendous research efforts. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of dynamic spectrum allocation and load balancing are discussed and spectrum auction takes the place of spectrum allocation to maximize the operation revenue. The authors design a joint spectrum auction and load balancing algorithm (SALB) based on heterogeneous network environment to develop a more flexible and efficient spectrum management. The simulation result shows that SALB increases the operation profit significantly.

Résumé :
In Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G systems, coexistence of multiple in-band smallcells defines what is called heterogeneous cellular networks. There is no doubt that the development of heterogeneous networks and the popularization of intelligent terminals facilitate subscribers with great convenience, better Quality of Experience (QoE) guarantee, and much higher traffic rate. However, interference management will be indispensable in heterogeneous networks. Meanwhile, with emerging various energy-hungry services of subscribers, energy-aware design attracts a wide attention. Motivated by interference mitigation and energy-saving challenges of the heterogeneous networks and the promising cognitive radio techniques, more advanced energy-saving and interference control techniques based on cognitive radio should be developed for better QoE. In this chapter, the authors first review cognitive radios, multiple types of smallcells, and introduce the benefits of cognitive radio-enabled heterogeneous networks. Then, focusing on the scheme design of cognitive interference management and energy management, finally, simulation results are provided to show the improved performance of these proposed cognitive schemes.

Résumé :
The focus of the work presented in this paper is to identify and find possible solutions for major implementation challenges in designing a computational platform for integrating data analytics paradigm with the simulation-based optimization technique to facilitate the modeling of a smart manufacturing system. A simulation model of a manufacturing system generates real-time monitoring data for machine status and these data are then mined by data mining algorithms to discover hidden knowledge that might not be predefined in the simulation model. The new knowledge is then fed into the simulation model such that the model adapts and evolves, and eventually it can predict future status. This procedure involves heterogeneous modeling techniques, information exchange among different tools, as well as model composition and interaction. We extend an early presented “Hypercube” information model that was specifically developed for the purpose of formal representation of smart manufacturing systems, in order to harmonize the information required by the simulation modeling tool and the data analytics tool. A strong emphasis is given to emerging areas of multi-domain and multiscale modeling by means of integration and interoperability between existing modeling tools and technologies. A specific case study related to preventive and predictive maintenance of a typical manufacturing system has been elaborated in the paper as the initial scope and application area in order to illustrate and validate the proposed computational framework.

Résumé :
A distributed simulation platform, denoted as D-Sim, has been developed previously by our research group, which comprises three essential attributes: a general XML description for models suitable for both leaf and integrated models, a gluing algorithm, which only relies on the interface information to integrate subsystem models, and a logical distributed simulation architecture that can be realized using any connection-oriented distributed technology. The overarching research focus is to integrate heterogeneous subsystem models, e.g., multibody dynamics subsystems models and finite element subsystems models and to conduct seamlessly integrated simulation and design tasks in a distributed computing environment. A Partitioned Iteration Method (PIM) is proposed in this paper, which decouples the rigid body motion from elastic deformation of the simulated system using an iteration scheme. The method employs a CG-following reference frame for each deformable body in the distributed simulation of flexible multibody systems. The resultant simulation system can be used to integrate distributed deformable bodies D-Sim, while allowing large rigid body motions among the bodies or subsystems. It also enables using independent simulation servers; where each server can run commercially available or research-based MBD and/or FEM codes. Examples are provided that demonstrate the performance of the method and also how to decouple and integrate rigid body motion and elastic deformation using the developed gluing algorithm.

Résumé :
Recently, Focused Ion Beam (FIB) instruments have begun be applied to organic materials such as polymers and biological systems. This provides a novel tool for sectioning biological samples for analysis, or microfabrication with environment friendly materials. The modeling of nano/micro scale geometry accurately sculptured by FIB milling is crucial for generating the milling plan and process control, and for computer simulation for prediction and visualization of the milled geometry. However, modeling of the ion milling process on compound materials, especially for high aspect ratio feature, is still difficult due to the complexity of target material, as well as multiple physical and chemical interactions involved. In this study, a comprehensive model of ion milling with organic targets is presented to address the challenges using a simulation based approach. This platform has also been validated by milling different features on water ice in a cryogenic environment, and the simulation and experiment results show great consistency. With the proliferation of nanotechnology to biomedical and biomaterial domains, the proposed approach is expected to be a flexible tool for various applications involving novel and heterogeneous milling targets.

Résumé :
Abstract Hybrid energy storage systems are a popular alternative to traditional electrical energy storage mechanisms for electric vehicles. Consisting of multiple heterogeneous storage elements, these systems require thoughtful design and control techniques to ensure adequate electrical performance and minimal added weight. In this work, a graph-based design optimization framework is extended to facilitate design and control optimization of a battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system. For a given high ramp rate load profile, a hybrid electrical energy storage system consisting of battery and ultracapacitor packs with proportional-integral controllers is considered. A multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to simultaneously optimize sizing and performance of the system by minimizing mass and deviations from ideal controller performance. This optimization is achieved by adjusting the size of the energy storage system and parameters of the feedback controller. A Pareto curve is provided, which exhibits the tradeoffs between sizing and performance of the hybrid energy storage system. Dynamic simulation results demonstrate optimized designs outperform initial designs in both sizing and electrical performance objectives. The design and control optimization approach is shown to outperform a similar sizing optimization approach.

Résumé :
The development of complex product dynamic simulation models and the integration of design automation systems require knowledge from multiple heterogeneous data sources and tools. Because of the heterogeneity of model data, the integration of tools and data is a time-consuming and error-prone task. The main objective of this study is to provide a unified model of dynamic simulation for engineering design, which serves as a knowledge base to support the development of a dynamic simulation model. The integration of knowledge is realized through (i) definition of the structure and interface during the design phase of the dynamic simulation model, and (ii) definition of a model-driven integrated environment configuration process during the runtime phase. In order to achieve interoperability among the different simulation models in a collaborative design environment, we build a “Demand-Resources-Service-Knowledge-Process (DKRSP)” ontology that formally represents the semantics of dynamic simulation models. Based on the ontology, a knowledge base is created for the management of dynamic simulation knowledge. The efficacy of the ontology and the knowledge base are demonstrated using a transmission design example.

Résumé :
The paper addresses an important problem related to automation of simulation modeling of queue systems using high-performance computing. There is a large spectrum of tools for the simulation modeling of such systems. However, these tools often do not use the possibilities of subject-oriented high-performance computing in full. The purpose of the study is the development of the new tools for automation of the simulation modeling of queue systems in a heterogeneous distributed computing environment. To this end, we develop specialized applications for parameter sweep computations in such an environment. A methodology of the application development is based on the integrated use of methods of the conceptual and wireframe programming, methods of the computations planning and resources allocation, methods of parameter sweep computations, and methods of the data analysis. We develop the toolkit named SIRIUS III for the simulation modeling of queue systems using high-performance computing. In addition, we design a conceptual model that represents knowledge about both the subject domain of solved problems and computing environment. Using the proposed toolkit, we solved a number of problems related to warehouse logistics. Computational experiments showed the high scalability of parameter sweep computations on heterogeneous resources.

Résumé :
Decisions made in the early stages of the product development lifecycle have significant impact on the downstream activities. However, existing tools supporting decision-making and product verification at these stages are very limited. One of the obvious reasons is the lack of a common understanding between the system-level design activity and the design activities within the various participating engineering disciplines. In this paper, we propose a collaboration solution which we have developed and commercialized based on the model-driven development platform that allows numerous engineers from heterogeneous engineering disciplines to collaborate on the development of a complex system, such as an automobile. It helps engineers apprehend the system holistically and collectively thus make better architectural decisions. More specifically, this solution connects discipline-specific designs and simulations with the system-level requirements that trigger them in order to facilitate the integration of development efforts and to enable system-level evaluation of the design concepts early in the product development processes. Our approach provides an effective way to trace and analyze the impact of requirements and design changes, facilitates reuse of simulation artifacts for the optimization of future product designs, and supports decision-making activities at the system level. We illustrate our approach in the context of a automotive use case involving mechanical, requirement and safety engineers respectively using their own authoring environments but collectively in synch on the total system thanks to an SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) based integration between their authoring environments.

Résumé :
Abstract High-performance computing is at the heart of digital technology which allows to simulate complex physical phenomena. The current trend for hardware architectures is toward heterogeneous systems with multi-core CPUs accelerated by GPUs to get high computing power. The demand for fast solution of Geoscience simulations coupled with new computing architectures drives the need for challenging parallel algorithms. Such applications based on partial differential equations, requires to solve large and sparse linear system of equations. This work makes a step further in Matrix Powers Kernel (MPK) which is a crucial kernel in solving sparse linear systems using communication-avoiding methods. This class of methods deals with the degradation of performances observed beyond several nodes by decreasing the gap between the time necessary to perform the computations and the time needed to communicate the results. The proposed work consists of a new formulation for distributed MPK kernels for the cluster of GPUs where the pipeline communications could be overlapped by the computation. Also, appropriate data reorganization decreases the memory traffic between processors and accelerators and improves performance. The proposed structure is based on the separation of local and external components with different layers of interface nodes-due to the MPK algorithm-. The data is restructured in a way where all the data required by the neighbor process comes contiguously at the end, after the local one. Thanks to an assembly step, the contents of the messages for each neighbor are determined. Such data structure has a major impact on the efficiency of the solution, since it permits to design an appropriate communication scheme where the computation with local data can occur on the GPUs and the external ones on the CPUs. Moreover, it permits more efficient inter-process communication by an effective overlap of the communication by the computation in the asynchronous pipeline way. We validate our design through the test cases with different block matrices obtained from different reservoir simulations : fractured reservoir dual-medium, black-oil two phase-flow, and three phase-flow models. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach compared to state of the art. The proposed MPK running on several nodes of the GPU cluster provides a significant performance gain over equivalent Sparse Matrix Vector product (SpMV) which is already optimized and provides better scalability.

Résumé :
Nowadays, the study of the behavior of social, economic, and technical queuing systems at different stages of their design and operation is a challenge for simulation modeling. The complexity of the dynamic structure of such systems is owing to a number of factors. Among them are a large number of system characteristics and relations between them, the existence of a large spectrum of distribution laws of random events, the need to collect and analyze current data on the system under study, and the presence of various constraints. Moreover, relations can be represented by functional, statistical, ambiguous, or other mappings. Unfortunately, simulation modeling tools are not widespread in designing and applying business processes, unlike other products of information and computation technologies (system of the office administration, warehouse management, etc.). In this regard, we present an approach to developing web-service for simulation modeling of queuing systems. Within the approach, we automate some stages of web-service development and use. To this end, we apply tools that support distributed computing with parameter variations in a heterogeneous environment, which includes virtualized resources. We provide a multi-agent management of computations. The practical use of the tools is shown on the example of developing a web-service for simulation modeling of a typical health and care institution.

Résumé :
Bridges often serve as key links in local and national transportation networks. Bridge closures can result in severe costs, not only in the form of repair or replacement, but also in the form of economic losses related to medium- and long-term interruption of businesses and disruption to surrounding communities. In addition, continuous functionality of bridges is very important after any seismic event for emergency response and recovery purposes. Considering the importance of these structures, the associated structural design philosophy is shifting from collapse prevention to maintaining functionality in the aftermath of moderate to strong earthquakes, referred to as “resiliency” in earthquake engineering research. Moreover, the associated construction philosophy is being modernized with the utilization of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques, which strive to reduce the impact of construction on traffic, society, economy and on-site safety. This report presents two bridge systems that target the aforementioned issues. A study that combined numerical and experimental research was undertaken to characterize the seismic performance of these bridge systems. The first part of the study focuses on the structural system-level response of highway bridges that incorporate a class of innovative connecting devices called the “V-connector,”, which can be used to connect two components in a structural system, e.g., the column and the bridge deck, or the column and its foundation. This device, designed by ACII, Inc., results in an isolation surface at the connection plane via a connector rod placed in a V-shaped tube that is embedded into the concrete. Energy dissipation is provided by friction between a special washer located around the V-shaped tube and a top plate. Because of the period elongation due to the isolation layer and the limited amount of force transferred by the relatively flexible connector rod, bridge columns are protected from experiencing damage, thus leading to improved seismic behavior. The V-connector system also facilitates the ABC by allowing on-site assembly of prefabricated structural parts including those of the V-connector. A single-column, two-span highway bridge located in Northern California was used for the proof-of-concept of the proposed V-connector protective system. The V-connector was designed to result in an elastic bridge response based on nonlinear dynamic analyses of the bridge model with the V-connector. Accordingly, a one-third scale V-connector was fabricated based on a set of selected design parameters. A quasi-static cyclic test was first conducted to characterize the force-displacement relationship of the V-connector, followed by a hybrid simulation (HS) test in the longitudinal direction of the bridge to verify the intended linear elastic response of the bridge system. In the HS test, all bridge components were analytically modeled except for the V-connector, which was simulated as the experimental substructure in a specially designed and constructed test setup. Linear elastic bridge response was confirmed according to the HS results. The response of the bridge with the V-connector was compared against that of the as-built bridge without the V-connector, which experienced significant column damage. These results justified the effectiveness of this innovative device. The second part of the study presents the HS test conducted on a one-third scale two-column bridge bent with self-centering columns (broadly defined as “resilient columns” in this study) to reduce (or ultimately eliminate) any residual drifts. The comparison of the HS test with a previously conducted shaking table test on an identical bridge bent is one of the highlights of this study. The concept of resiliency was incorporated in the design of the bridge bent columns characterized by a well-balanced combination of self-centering, rocking, and energy-dissipating mechanisms. This combination is expected to lead to minimum damage and low levels of residual drifts. The ABC is achieved by utilizing precast columns and end members (cap beam and foundation) through an innovative socket connection. In order to conduct the HS test, a new hybrid simulation system (HSS) was developed, utilizing commonly available software and hardware components in most structural laboratories including: a computational platform using Matlab/Simulink [MathWorks 2015], an interface hardware/software platform dSPACE [2017], and MTS controllers and data acquisition (DAQ) system for the utilized actuators and sensors. Proper operation of the HSS was verified using a trial run without the test specimen before the actual HS test. In the conducted HS test, the two-column bridge bent was simulated as the experimental substructure while modeling the horizontal and vertical inertia masses and corresponding mass proportional damping in the computer. The same ground motions from the shaking table test, consisting of one horizontal component and the vertical component, were applied as input excitations to the equations of motion in the HS. Good matching was obtained between the shaking table and the HS test results, demonstrating the appropriateness of the defined governing equations of motion and the employed damping model, in addition to the reliability of the developed HSS with minimum simulation errors. The small residual drifts and the minimum level of structural damage at large peak drift levels demonstrated the superior seismic response of the innovative design of the bridge bent with self-centering columns. The reliability of the developed HS approach motivated performing a follow-up HS study focusing on the transverse direction of the bridge, where the entire two-span bridge deck and its abutments represented the computational substructure, while the two-column bridge bent was the physical substructure. This investigation was effective in shedding light on the system-level performance of the entire bridge system that incorporated innovative bridge bent design beyond what can be achieved via shaking table tests, which are usually limited by large-scale bridge system testing capacities.
