Résumé :
At the present time, the tourist destination offers a stimulating laboratory for the experimentation of theoretical models and good practices on the subjects of governance, knowledge management and sustainable competition. Growing interest in the study of this territorial context gains impetus from the new approaches and tools that local administrations are starting to introduce in the phases of implementation and control of local strategies. In this respect, the Tourist Destination Observatory (OTD) represents an important innovation, offering a nerve centre for the aggregation and networking of heterogeneous data scattered over the territory as well as a model for the implementation of permanent approaches to social dialogue as prerequisites for the creation of knowledge and for an aware, shared, competitive and responsible development of the destination. The OTD can act as an efficient agent of local change, facilitating the processes of governance, and as a tool of knowledge management for the valorisation of intellectual capital. It is consequently a crucial support for the strategic repositioning of mountain resorts, which can represent valid responses to the emerging new modes of interpreting the holiday.

Résumé :
Development of new therapies for rheumatic diseases requires a series of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) progressing from phase 1, 'first-in-human' to generate initial safety, pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) data; to phase 2, proof of concept for efficacy with safety and PK/PD data; and phase 3, designed to demonstrate definitive efficacy and safety to support regulatory approval. Important aspects of RCT designs include sample size estimations, treatment allocation, rescue, blinding, and statistical analyses of prespecified endpoints to preserve trial integrity. Over the past 15 years, significant progress has been made in the design of RCTs in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Similarly, development and validation of composite outcome measures in psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, and osteoarthritis have furthered trial design and treatment approvals. RCTs in systemic lupus erythematosus and other multisystem, heterogeneous diseases pose more challenges. Trial design will continue to evolve as promising therapies are introduced into the clinic.

Résumé :
This book will formally launch "organic synthesis engineering" as a distinctive field in the armory of the reaction engineer. Its main theme revolves around two developments: catalysis and the role of process intensification in enhancing overall productivity. Each of these two subjects are becoming increasingly useful in organic synthesis engineering, especially in the production of medium and small volume chemicals and enhancing reaction rates by extending laboratory techniques, such as ultrasound, phase transfer catalysts, membrane reactor, and microwaves, to industrial scale production. This volume describes the applications of catalysis in organic synthesis and outlines different techniques of reaction rate and/or selectivity enhancement against a background of reaction engineering principles for both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems.

Résumé :
Remade in France: Anglicisms in the Lexicon and Morphology of French chronicles the current status of French Anglicisms, a hot topic in the history of the French language and a compelling example of the influence of global English. The abundant data come from primary sources—a large online newspaper corpus (for unofficial Anglicisms) and the dictionary (for official Anglicisms)—and secondary sources. This book examines the appearance and behavior of English items in the lexicon and morphology of French, and explains them in the context of French neology and lexical activity. The first phase of the latest contact period (1990–2015) has its own complex linguistic characterization, including a significant influx of nonce borrowings and very low-frequency Anglicisms, heterogeneous and creative borrowing outcomes, and direct phraseological borrowing. This book is a counterargument to the well-known criticism that Anglicisms are lexical polluters. On the contrary, the use of Anglicisms requires the inventive application of complex linguistic rules, and the borrowing of Anglicisms into the French lexicon is convincing proof that language change is systematic. The findings bring novel interdisciplinary insights to the domains of borrowing in a non-bilingual contact setting; global English as a source of lexical creativity in the French lexicon; the phases, patterns and processes of integration of English loanwords; the morphology of borrowing; and computational corpus linguistics. The appended database is a snapshot of a synchronic period of linguistic contact and a useful lexicographic resource.

Siebert, Stefan, Sengupta Raj et Alexander Tsoukas. Assessment and monitoring outcomes in axial spondyloarthritis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198755296.003.0013.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a heterogeneous condition with multiple effects and a variable course. Monitoring outcomes is required to optimize treatment and care. There are a significant number of outcomes that could potentially be measured in patients with axSpA. Performing these in routine clinical practice has resource and logistic implications, so clinicians and teams looking after patients with axSpA need to decide which aspects they will monitor locally. Most national and international guidelines for the use of biologics require regular monitoring of disease activity. In this chapter, we outline suggested core data sets and review some of the key validated outcomes for axSpA. These include a range of patient-reported and clinician-assessed measures covering disease activity, symptoms (such as pain, stiffness, and fatigue), function, mobility, work disability, and quality of life. We also review the roles of acute phase blood tests and imaging in monitoring axSpA.

Résumé :
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is playing an increasingly significant role in fundamental and applied research: to study any type of solid and liquid materials (ionic, mixed, semiconductor, and insulators), to study charge transfer in heterogeneous systems, including phase boundaries, electrode boundaries, and elements of the microstructure. With the help of EIS, it is possible to study the behavior of chemical sensors, fuel cells, batteries, and corrosion processes. The base of the method stays on the principle of exciting any electrochemical system with a signal in the form of a sinusoidal wave and observing its behavior in response to this disturbance. This is the simplest method for determining the structural and transport functions of the system under study. This is the simplest method for determining the structural and transport functions of the system under study. The book discusses the theoretical foundations of the method of impedance spectroscopy, including the method of equivalent circuits, and provides examples of the analysis of impedance spectra for real objects. The main attention is paid to the model elements of equivalent circuits, their physical base, and the use of the models in the analysis of electrochemical systems. Handbook consists of seven chapters. It has questions and tasks to self-work after each part. It is intended for students of chemical, chemical-technological, and biomedical specialties, as well as for specialists engaged in research in the field of materials science, medicine, and ecology.

Résumé :
This chapter explores the nature of the relationship between topics (understood, following Leonard Ratner, as “subject[s] to be incorporated into a musical discourse”) and form. An introductory section notes the sometimes precarious disposition of topics and acknowledges the heterogeneous nature of the topical universe. This is followed by a description of the role of topics in each of the fifteen periods that make up this sonata-form movement. In addition to confirming that topics typically give profile to tonal-harmonic and phrase-structural processes, the analysis notes the relationship between topics and theme, the stylistic implications of topical usage, and the temporal character of topics.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter reconstructs how Nalca, a Mek language of the Trans-New Guinea phylum, has acquired gender markers and describes the non-canonical properties of this highly unusual gender system. Gender in Nalca is mainly assigned by two different defaults, phonological assignment is holistic, there is a gender switch depending on the syntax of the noun phrase, controller and target are adjacent, and gender has the function of case marker hosts. Gender in Nalca is only weakly entrenched in the lexicon and predominantly phrasal. It is argued that canonical gender is an attractor (a complex, diachronically stable structure with heterogeneous origins). A model of the gender attractor based on the notion of information transfer chain is developed. The rise of Nalca gender is an instance of system emergence where several diachronic processes, such as grammaticalization, reanalysis, and analogy, interact. Chains of rapid diachronic change are triggered by anomalies that entail other anomalies.

Hart, Tessa. Cognitive Enhancement in Traumatic Brain Injury. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190214401.003.0006.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent source of disability. This chapter reviews the major approaches to remediation of cognitive dysfunction following TBI, in both the early and post-acute phases of recovery. Pharmacologic and behavioral treatments are discussed, focusing on the three major areas of cognition affected by TBI: attention, memory, and executive function. Trials of pharmacologic treatments, especially neuroprotective agents, have resulted in few treatment guidelines, probably due to the heterogeneous pathophysiology of TBI. Among behavioral treatments, both restorative and compensatory approaches are presented. Most of the available evidence favors compensatory treatments, in which patients are taught alternative strategies and/or changes are made in the social/physical environments to facilitate everyday functioning. Despite methodologic challenges and limitations in treatment definition that make comparisons across studies difficult, cognitive rehabilitation for TBI is increasingly viewed as a vital component of the effort to restore maximal independence at home and in society.

Résumé :
As I have worked on this book, I have often been struck by the audacity of its title. The phrase “the New Mechanical Philosophy” was not my own, but still, to appropriate the venerable tradition of mechanical philosophy, to call it new, and to add a definite article to boot—maybe that’s just too much. Nonetheless I have stuck with the title, and the project, because I think it reflects both the continuity with the history of science and its philosophy, and a sea change in philosophical thinking in the new century. Mechanical philosophy is as old as Democritus; it was a central theme in the scientific revolution; it has helped drive research and debates on the nature of life and the nature of mind. But the New Mechanical Philosophy is new in large part because it tracks changes in the way science is done. Over recent decades, the sciences have developed increasing, if still rudimentary, capacities to analyze complex and heterogeneous systems—cells, brains, ecosystems, economies, and so on. Whereas in earlier epochs many of the greatest scientific achievements have been to understand the basic building blocks—the laws of electricity and magnetism or the structure of the hydrogen atom—scientists are now able to greater and greater extents understand how these things are put together to make the universe we know. Mechanical philosophy is always about understanding how things are put together, so it is a philosophy for this time....
