Résumé :
This chapter examines the concept of the “luxe pop” production practices and their evolution over the last several decades. It traces the connection between modern luxe pop, 1970s symphonic soul, and 1920s symphonic jazz. Each case features the timbre of a lush string orchestra as a stand-in for highbrow or elevated culture, while the overlaid genres of jazz, soul, and hip-hop function as a symbol of lowbrow culture. This juxtaposition of black/white, lowbrow/highbrow, street/luxury functions as musical irony and subversive sarcasm. This chapter traces specifically the connection between Jay-Z’s symphonic hip-hop production “Can I Live,” which samples Isaac Hayes’s cover of Burt Bacharach’s “The Look of Love,” a recording that was featured in the movie Casino Royale (1967). Pop music’s tendency to borrow samples from its own history (“retromania”) leads to an interconnected web of artists spanning decades of popular music.

Résumé :
Hearing loss is the commonest sensory disability worldwide, and the World Health Organisation has estimated that 278 million people suffer a moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears, with 80 per cent of deaf and hearing-impaired people living in low- and middle-income countries (WHO 2006). Tinnitus affects approximately 10 per cent of developed populations (Coles 1984) and of these, 5 per cent find the symptom troublesome and seek help (Davis 1995). Tinnitus and hearing loss are primary symptoms of disordered cochlear function, but may also present as a result of central auditory pathology with normal cochlear function. Pathology affecting the central auditory pathways characteristically presents as difficulty hearing in conditions of poor signal-to-noise ratio, for example, in a classroom in the presence of background noise, listening to transmitted sound, for example on the telephone or on a television, and sound localization. As a consequence of multiple relays and bilateral representation above the level of the cochlear nuclei, central auditory dysfunction does not present with hearing loss. Hearing loss and/or tinnitus, with or without associated vestibular abnormalities, will most commonly be the result of otological pathology. However, importantly for the neurologist cochlear, VIII nerve, or central auditory dysfunction may be part of the clinical presentation of a neurological disorder.

Résumé :
Testing Hearing: The Making of Modern Aurality argues that the modern cultural practices of hearing and testing have emerged from a long interrelationship. Since the early nineteenth century, auditory test tools (whether organ pipes or electronic tone generators) and the results of hearing tests have fed back into instrument calibration, human training, architecture, and the creation of new musical sounds. Hearing tests received a further boost around 1900 as a result of injury compensation laws and state and professional demands for aptitude testing in schools, conservatories, the military, and other fields. Applied on a large scale, tests of seemingly small measure—of auditory acuity, of hearing range—helped redefine the modern concept of hearing as such. During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the epistemic function of hearing expanded. Hearing took on the dual role of test object and test instrument; in the latter case, human hearing became a gauge by which to evaluate or regulate materials, nonhuman organisms, equipment, and technological systems. This book considers both the testing of hearing and testing with hearing to explore the co-creation of modern epistemic and auditory cultures. The book’s twelve contributors trace the design of ever more specific tests for the arts, education and communication, colonial and military applications, and sociopolitical and industrial endeavors. Together, they demonstrate that testing as such became an enduring and wide-ranging cultural technique in the modern period, one that is situated between histories of scientific experimentation and many fields of application.

Résumé :
The chapter Implantable hearing interfaces describes the fundamental operation of a commonly available biohybrid system, the cochlear implant, or bionic ear. This neuro-stimulating biomedical implant is very successful in restoring hearing function to people with profound hearing loss. The fundamental operation of the biological cochlea is described and parallels are drawn between key aspects of the biological system and the biohybrid implementation: dynamic range compression, translation of sound to neural activity, and tonotopic mapping. Critical considerations are discussed for simultaneously meeting biological, surgical, and engineering restrictions in successful biohybrid systems design. Finally, challenges in present and future cochlear implants are outlined and directions of current research given.

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on music therapy for children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. Foundational information on acoustical properties of music and speech and the hearing mechanism is provided. Because this population is diverse on a number of factors, which influence therapeutic needs, this chapter describes differences among clients as a function of auditory profiles (e.g. onset or severity of loss), hearing devices, modes of communication, and cultural affiliation. These factors influence abilities in various functional domains. Music therapy goals and interventions are described in relation to speech and language, auditory training, social integration, and music engagement. Accommodations in the therapeutic environment that optimize hearing and communication guidelines essential to successful therapeutic interventions are discussed.

Résumé :
Chapter 5 treats Music for Airports as a work of conceptual art and compares it to the work of Steve Reich, arguing that the album, like Eno’s visual art, provides a sonic image of the ecological character of human activity and meaning. The chapter also tracks how the album’s ambient function changes when it is reproduced through differing technologies, and how it becomes an entirely different kind of artwork when scored for and performed on traditional instruments by Bang on a Can. Because the album proves to have three distinct dimensions, it requires “prismatic listening.” Prismatic listening switches between distinct modes of attention, in this case between the album’s ambient function, its exploration of the activity of sounds, and its standing as conceptual art. And it does so in the knowledge that these dimensions cannot be heard simultaneously.

Résumé :
The implications of a hearing loss can go far beyond the linguistic domain. Several studies have revealed that deaf and hard-of-hearing children are at risk in their social-emotional development. This chapter argues that executive functions and theory of mind are two central underlying cognitive factors in people’s social-emotional functioning. We briefly review what is currently known about executive functioning and theory-of-mind development in deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adolescents and then present a cognitive model with a central role for inner speech in relation to executive functioning and theory of mind. We hypothesize that inner speech both enables and urges the regulation of oneself (executive function) and also the mentalization of one’s own and others’ inner worlds (theory of mind). We discuss the implications for assessing and treating social-emotional problems in deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adolescents.
