Résumé :
Marginal Man: The Dark Vision of Harold Innis, Alexander John Watson, Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2006, cloth, $65.00, pp. xi, 525.In the study of Canadian political thought, a young doctoral student wrote, and defended in 1981, an excellent PhD dissertation on Harold Innis. Unlike many works, it was based as much on an exhaustive examination of Harold Innis' papers as it was on Innis' published works. Unfortunately, A. John Watson did not continue in academia and his work was ultimately accessible only to the committed Innis specialist, willing to visit the U of T's Robarts Library or consult microfilm. After half a career as CEO of Care Canada, the international relief organization, Alexander John Watson has revised and published this work, making it accessible to a much broader audience.

Taylor, Catherine Anne. « 'The resurrection of Child Harold' : a transcription of Nor, MS6, and a reconsideration of John Clare's Child Harold and related writings ». Thesis, University of York, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14172/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
There is, to date, no facsimile edition of John Clare's 1841 Folio manuscript, Nor, MS6 or the earlier octavo notebook known as Nor, MS8. My intention in this thesis is to redress this situation by firstly presenting a transcription of the entire contents of Nor, MS6, while secondly incorporating an account of Nor, MS8 and its compositional relationship with Nor, MS6. As a direct result of this transcription I have offered a full account of the layout and sequential order of Nor, MS6, which I go on to argue requires critical commentators to reconsider not only Clare's long poem Child Harold but the entire contents of this manuscript. My thesis challenges a number of assumptions made about the construction and sequential order of the stanzas which make up Child Harold that have arisen as a result of previous editorial decisions. Chapter One serves to contextualise the manuscript's contents within the framework of Clare's confinement at High Beech asylum in Essex, most particularly the impact of confinement on the growth and development of Clare's two long poems of 1841, Don Juan and Child Harold. Chapter Two. This Chapter raises some issues about the responsibility an editor owes to a Folio manuscript such as Nor, MS6. I ask a rhetorical question; 'How to edit Nor, MS6?' and explore some of the problems which face the editor ofC1are's later work in the absence of any clear authorial intention. I also offer a Textual and Critical History of the poetry of 1841, which inevitably and not always justifiably, has been centred on Child Harold and Don Juan. During the course of this history I trace the slow but discernible development of interest in Clare's asylwn poetry written during his first confinement as it moves from a biographical preoccupation with Clare's insanity to a more coherent appreciation of its significance. Chapter Three. This Chapter describes the physical and stylistic characteristics of Nor, MS6. I offer a detailed account of the makeup of this manuscript at the same time outlining the differences between Nor, MS6 and Clare's earlier manuscript Nor, MS8. During the course of this discussion I describe the importance of a nwnber of stanzas written at home in Northborough after Clare's escape from High Beech and suggest the impact of freedom on Clare's creative output. I also explore the function and significance of the Songs and Ballads in the construction of the Child Harold stanzas and the remaining material of Nor, MS6. Chapter Four. This Chapter contains notes to the text of the entire contents of Nor, MS6. I explain the editorial principles behind the transcription and offer a detailed description of Nor, MS6. Chapter Five. A transcription of the entire contents of Nor, MS6. The transcription is accompanied by endnotes and a photographic reproduction of the pages of the original manuscript held at Northampton. Chapter Six. 'A Reading of Child Harold'. This Chapter offers a reading of Child Harold in the context of the remaining material in Nor, MS6. I suggest that there is evidence of an autobiographical presence in all the writings in Nor, MS6 which reconstructs or reworks a central autobiographical account of loss, confinement and escape. I go on to argue that although there appear to be three different narratorial personae within the manuscript they are in fact bound together by one dominant speaker. Clare's obsessive reconstruction of one central account, his relentless quest to find permanence, home, loved woman and a particular truth implicit to these associations would appear to shape and control the contents ofhis notebook. Conclusion. I briefly consider two opposing contemporary views on the editing of Clare's poetry and consider the implication these different approaches hold for the contents of Nor, MS6 in particular. I conclude by examining the impact present copyright may have upon new readings of Clare's work and upon proposed editions of his poetry.

Villa, Silvia Maria Teresa. « Concept of canon in literary studies : critical debates 1970-2000 ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7853.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The present thesis focuses on the critical dialogues on the literary canon developed between 1970 and 2000 in the United States as a crucial juncture for the consolidation of the notion of canon as a scholarly subject matter within the field of literary studies. By taking stock of the abundance of scholarly contributions on the literary canon produced at this time, this thesis pursues two aims: first, it initiates a process of systematisation of the scholarly material on the canon produced during the last thirty years of the twentieth century; second, it focuses on a selection of particularly influential works that have furthered the understanding of specific aspects of the notion of canon. Two introductory chapters outline respectively the historical and the theoretical background of this research. Chapter One explores the historical framework within which the canon started to receive increasing critical attention inside and outside U.S. academia. In particular, it observes how the historical and cultural phenomenon known as the Culture Wars came to bear upon the way in which the notion of canon was perceived and treated by critics and scholars. Early and later examples of canonical criticism are juxtaposed so as to argue that the absorption of debates about the definition of national cultural heritage within U.S. academia influenced the terms in which the canon was being discussed, privileging oppositional rhetorical strategies over the more moderate tones of early theoretical approaches. Chapter Two draws on Jan Gorak’s work in The Making of The Modern Canon: Genesis and Crisis of a Literary Idea (1991) to explore the history of the concept of canon and of its associations with the diverging attitudes adopted by critics in relation to the canon in the period in exam. The second part of this thesis constitutes of three case studies that illustrate the significance for our understanding of the concepts of canon, canonicity and canon formation, of three texts published in the 1990s by Harold Bloom, John Guillory and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Each chapter observes how these studies contributed to clarify the relationship between the idea of canon and that of tradition, between canon and ideology and, finally, between the canon and the anthology, respectively. Chapter Three locates Bloom’s The Western Canon: The Books and Schools of Ages (1994) in relation to his earlier theory of the anxiety of influence and argues that Bloom’s account of canon formation relies on his definition of tradition as the agonistic struggle between poets and their predecessors. Chapter Four is a close reading of John Guillory’s Cultural Capital: The Problem of Literary Canon Formation (1993) and explores the political ideology underlying its selective use of the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Antonio Gramsci and T.S.Eliot. Finally, Chapter Five engages with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s attempt to establish a canon of African American Literature through his role as editor of the Norton Anthology of African American Literature (1996).

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The 1966 Australian Federal Election is unique in Australian history, in that it is the only Federal Election where issues of domestic policy were largely ignored in favour of debate over foreign policy. This thesis explores the issue which dominated 1966, the American Alliance. The Alliance was able to affect debate on the Australian use of conscripts in the Vietnam War as well as creating considerable friction in the Australian Labor Party. In addition the American Alliance created an environment which saw the first American President visit Australia, a visit and relationship which was exploited by both sides of politics.

Résumé :
Despite the broadening of the subject matter of English drama in its ???new wave??? period from the late nineteen fifties, it is striking to see how much of enduring mainstream English drama has a domestic focus. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the first full-length study of marriage on the English stage from 1930-1990. The thesis examines the way in which a number of important playwrights have fashioned drama from the conflict between the public, or institutional, functions of marriage and the private, or relational, functions of marriage. The thesis places this conflict into historical context. This will show that the conflict between the private and public aspects of marriage is not one of clearly opposed opposites but one that is made dynamic by significant social and legal changes to the status, function and conventions of marriage. The thesis also demonstrates that this conflict is further complicated by class considerations and by the particular circumstances of each marital partnership. From the wealth of material available, I have chosen to examine in detail the work of seven playwrights who have made significant contributions to domestic drama or domestic comedy. Playwrights have been selected because their plays gained a strong audience on first performance and because, through numerous revivals and through publication of scripts, they have earned an enduring place in English drama. John Osborne???s Look Back in Anger, which in 1956, ushered in the ???new wave???, is pivotal play for discussion. The previous generation is represented by Noel Coward, J. B. Priestley and Terence Rattigan. The ???new wave??? and its aftermath are represented by Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and, finally Alan Ayckbourn. Despite a wide variety of approaches to the topic of marriage, these writers tend to assume a middle class audience and to follow or adapt the traditions of realism or comedy of manners. This thesis argues that despite real, even radical, changes to marriage, to accepted sexual practices and to the status of women in the sixty years under discussion, the mainstream theatre has tended to be conservative in its presentation of marital and sexual matters, especially in continuing to reinscribe a public/private opposition determined by gender.

This dissertation proposes a comparative analysis of metafiction in the novel The French lieutenant's woman, by John Fowles and in the film with the same name, directed by Karel Reisz, with screenplay by Harold Pinter. Our theoretical frame highlights some of the main studies published in the field of metafiction. We supplement the investigation of metafiction in the literary and filmic narrative in interface with other theoretical contributions, among them: narratology, filmic adaptation and some theoreticians of postmodernism. We adopt as a methodological principle the comparative investigation of some aesthetic devices and procedures associated with metafiction (self-reflexivity, self-consciousness, intertextuality, mise-en-abyme, among others) as long as they have been emphasized in the appreciation of some selected narrative categories (narrator, epigraph, character, reader/spectator) in the literary and filmic contexts. As a whole, our results consider metafiction as being a privileged, mediatory, logic, processual and theoretical-critical tool for the in-depth comprehension of the filmic and literary narratives.

This essay examines the adaptation of The French Lieutenant’s Woman; proclaiming that it is based on the same core of meaning as the novel. This core, or interiority, of the art work, is the freedom which Sarah Woodruff presents. The interiority is immanent within the novel as well as the film. The freedom that Sarah presents creates gaps in time and is mainly freedom from time. From an exterior perspective though, these art works look different. The exteriority is visualized and described by being denominated as different narrative levels. In the film Mike falls in love with Sarah as an escape from his own time, one that is characterized by more lenient moral views than those prevalent in the Victorian Age. This present-day character is not, of course, in the novel but is invented by Harold Pinter as part of a metaphor for Fowles’ metafictional stance. In the novel, freedom is partly represented by an extradiegetic narrative level and suggested in various comments made by the apparent author of the work: John Fowles. This essay highlights the contrasts between the fictive world (on a hypodiegetic level), and the real world (on a diegetic level). By doing this, this essay suggests a motive for Pinter’s “narrative innovation” as a “brilliant metaphor” for Fowles´ novel. With these contrasts we find that the restraints of a seemingly open society (the 1980s in which Pinter was writing the screenplay) are able to contain an inner, rather implicit, restraint for the individual of the 1980s. The longing for freedom is triggered as soon as man is deprived of freedom, irrespective of how and when. Sarah is an escape from Victorian Age for Charles, at the same time as she is an escape from the 1980s for Mike. On the whole, Sarah is an escape from the linearity of all time. Freedom is immanent with both of the artworks, yet they are completely different, seen from outside.

Résumé :
In ‘Byron, Stephens and the Future of Ruins’ (2024), Adrian Poole discusses Lord Byron’s contemplation of ruins, both recent, from war in Europe, and ancient, in places like Rome, Athens and Egypt. The chapter explores Byron’s reflection on past, present and future through the lens of ruins. Byron’s poem Childe Harold dwells on the contrast between the former glory and present degradation of Athens, emphasising the ongoing process of ruin inflicted by modern conflicts. Poole discusses Byron’s critical stance on historical figures like Lord Elgin and Lord Aberdeen, who were involved in transporting artefacts. The chapter also introduces John Lloyd Stephens, an American writer and traveller, credited with uncovering the Maya ruins in Central America. Heavily influenced by Byron, Stephens embarked on perilous journeys into an archaeological past with strong contemporary political resonances. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the enduring significance of ruins and their representation of a past that once had a future.

Résumé :
My contribution, rooted in functional and systemic grammar, is based on the assumption that though discourse as a social behaviour and verbal interaction has been studied by great minds for decades, the dynamism of human evolution and the consequent changes in communicative strategies can hardly leave discourse analysts immune to a whole spectrum of new challenges. These are evoked by changes in the scope of items considered to be relevant for present-day research, by blurring the traditional borderlines between categories (written manifestation of spoken discourse in chatting), but before all by the existence of language corpora offering the immensity of data across genres, language varieties and language interfaces. A brief introduction (Part 1) will be followed by three main parts, focusing on reasons for multifacetedness in discourse (Part 2), whimsical nature of discourse (Part 3), and hands-on experience with overt language manifestations of vagueness, as exemplified by English placeholders (Mrs Thingy, John Whatsisname, whatchamacallit, so-and-so) emergent from the BNC and COCA corpora (Part 4). The aim is twofold: to map the facets which contribute to patterning and variation in discourse shaping, and by using authentic language data amplify the role of peripheral language devices in interaction.

Résumé :
Self-piercing riveting (SPR) has drawn more attention in recent years because it can join some advanced materials that are hard to weld, such as aluminum alloy sheets. In this paper, the free torsional vibration characteristics of single lap-jointed encastre SPR beam are investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to reveal the influence on the torsional natural frequencies and mode shapes of the single lap-jointed encastre SPR beam of different characteristics of sheets to be jointed. Numerical examples show that the torsional natural frequencies increase significantly as the Young’s modulus of the sheets increase, but almost no change corresponding to the change in Poisson’s ratio of the sheets to be joint. The mode shapes show that there are different deformations in the jointed section of SPR beam compared with the reference encastre beam without joint. These different deformations may cause different natural frequency values and different stress distributions.

Résumé :
We are hearing a lot at the moment about ‘the great resignation’; Covid has exposed a number of hard truths to people about what they want from life, from their careers and this is leading to people changing jobs, careers, and in many cases, leaving the workforce altogether, leading to huge gaps. With the climate emergency and other global geo-political factors, there are growing industries out there that need a massive influx of employees, and a number of other industries which are going to be haemorrhaging employees in the not too distant future due to changes in working practices. Smaller-formed courses which give employees the opportunity to learn at their own pace and achieve in shorter time frames with smaller costs and with recognition, at an industry and/or national level is a huge impetus to learners to upskill and reskill and join these industries which are crying out for new workers. This video will detail the different ways that industry and the workforce can use and utilise nano- and micro-credentials to motivate more people into particular industries with the right skills and knowledge set required to provide the workforce industry needs right now.

Résumé :
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Self-piercing riveting (SPR) are one of most important joining approaches in lightweight vehicle design for Body-in-white (BIW) manufacturing. Numerical simulation of the riveting process could significantly boost design efficiency by reducing trial-and-error experiments. The traditional Finite Element Method (FEM) with element erosion is hard to capture the large plastic deformation and complex failure behaviors in the SPR process. The smoothed Particle Galerkin Method (SPG) is a genuine meshless method based on Galerkin's weak form, which uses a novel bond-based failure mechanism to keep the conservation of mass and momentum during the material failure process. This study utilizes a combined FEM and SPG approach to join Aluminum sheet 5754 using a full three-dimensional (3D) model in LS-DYNA/explicit. To mimic the rivet insertion process, the mesh-free SPG method is used to model the material part of the upper and lower sheet where the rivet pierces through, while FEM methods for computational efficiency model the remaining parts. Sensitivity studies are conducted to investigate the impacts of critical model parameters and accurate material properties. This work illustrates that precise material properties and 3D CAE modeling can provide fundamental and insightful information for the SPR process.</div></div>

Résumé :
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">A lightweight multi-material combination of steel and aluminium alloy (Al) is becoming a novel approach towards environmentally sustainable transport systems. Studies show that 10% reduction of vehicle weight results into 3-7% reduction in specific fuel consumption in IC engines and a 13.7% improvement in electric range for electric vehicles. However, dissimilar welding of Al/steel is a key challenge because of incompatible thermo-physical properties (melting point, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion) and low miscibility between Al and steel. The formation of brittle and hard Al-steel intermetallic compound (IMC) at the joint interface is the major concern for dissimilar welding of Al/steel. In this work, efforts are made to check the feasibility of Ni interlayer to control IMC formation at the interface of Al/steel dissimilar welded joint. Resistance spot welding is used to join low carbon steel CR01 and Al AA6061-T6 with pure Ni interlayer. Microstructure and IMC morphology of welded joints are investigated by optical and scanning electron microscope. The mechanical performance of welded joints is evaluated by tensile shear strength (TSS), failure energy and failure mode. Ni-interlayer does not have major effect on physical aspects of weld such as electrode indentation, Al thinning and steel bulging height. Two separate interfaces namely, Ni/Al and Ni/steel are formed with Ni interlayer. Higher amount of expulsion is taken place at the Ni/Al interface, resulting into lower TSS for dissimilar welding with Ni-interlayer compared to without interlayer.</div></div>

Résumé :
Abstract: In the 21st century it is hard to imagine a classroom that does not have to take into consideration the role of academic technology in the process of teaching, learning and the evaluation . Obviously, there is no mathematics software that suits to everyone; this paper keep an eye on two of them we are comfortable with : WIRIS and GeoGebra . The two software may be used for all levels of education that join algebra, geometry, graphing, statistics and calculus. WIRIS has a Math Editor, both WIRIS and Geogebra have a CAS system , but no one has the means to keep records of students work/performance. Fortunately for math teachers WIRIS is integrated into a LMS, which is Moodle in our case, and Geogebra files can be loaded in Moodle too. Basically to get an interactive file with Geogebra, means to create an applet, so working with scripting can not be avoided. There are many authors of applets all around the world, applets are shared on Geogebratube, but the "Construction Protocol "of them are not shown. On the other hand writing an algorithm in WIRIS is much, much easier. The evaluation process flows easily for students, parents and teachers with WIRIS QUIZES by using variables in the process of the writing algorithms that are generating a new problem at every attempt. Our paper contains a package of lessons created by WIRIS and GeoGebra as integrated software in MOODLE. The lessons package can prove how interactive technology enables us to provide requisite knowledge, develop critical thinking skills and stimulate natural curiosity, all of these in the benefits of students in their efforts of pursuing success.

Résumé :
Joining of dissimilar metals and alloys has been envisioned since a long time with specific high end applications in various fields. One such combination is austenitic stainless steel grade SS304 and commercial grade titanium, which is very difficult to join under conventional fusion process due to extensive cracking and failure caused by mismatch in structural and thermal properties as well as formation of the extremely brittle and hard intermetallic compounds. One of the methods proposed in literature to control the formation of intermetallics is by fast cooling fusion process like laser beam welding. The present study has been done on laser welding of titanium and stainless steel AISI 304 to understand the interaction of these materials during laser welding at different laser power and welding speed which could yield different cooling rates. Two types of cracks were observed in the weld joint, namely longitudinal cracks and transverse cracks with respect to the weld direction. Longitudinal cracks could be completely eliminated at faster welding speeds, but transverse cracks were found little influenced by the welding speed. The thermal history, i.e. melt pool lifetime and cooling rate of the molten pool during laser welding was monitored and a relation between thermo-cycle with occurrence of cracks was established. It is inferred that the longitudinal cracks are mainly due to the formation of various brittle intermetallic phases of Fe and Ti, which could be minimized by providing relatively less melt pool lifetime at high welding speeds. The reason of the transverse cracks could be the generation of longitudinal stress in weld joint due to the large difference in the thermal expansion coefficient of steel and titanium. In order to mitigate the longitudinal stress laser welding was carried out with a novel experimental arrangement which ensured different cooling rates of these two metals during laser welding. With this the tendency of transverse cracks also could be minimized significantly.
