Résumé :
The saccade generator updates memorized target representations for saccades during eye and head movements. Here, we tested if proprioceptive feedback from the arm can also update handheld object locations for saccades, and what intrinsic coordinate system(s) is used in this transformation. We measured radial saccades beginning from a central light-emitting diode to 16 target locations arranged peripherally in eight directions and two eccentricities on a horizontal plane in front of subjects. Target locations were either indicated 1) by a visual flash, 2) by the subject actively moving the handheld central target to a peripheral location, 3) by the experimenter passively moving the subject’s hand, or 4) through a combination of the above proprioceptive and visual stimuli. Saccade direction was relatively accurate, but subjects showed task-dependent systematic overshoots and variable errors in radial amplitude. Visually guided saccades showed the smallest overshoot, followed by saccades guided by both vision and proprioception, whereas proprioceptively guided saccades showed the largest overshoot. In most tasks, the overall distribution of saccade endpoints was shifted and expanded in a gaze- or head-centered cardinal coordinate system. However, the active proprioception task produced a tilted pattern of errors, apparently weighted toward a limb-centered coordinate system. This suggests the saccade generator receives an efference copy of the arm movement command but fails to compensate for the arm’s inertia-related directional anisotropy. Thus the saccade system is able to transform hand-centered somatosensory signals into oculomotor coordinates and combine somatosensory signals with visual inputs, but it seems to have a poorly calibrated internal model of limb properties.

Résumé :
Motor imagery (MI) is widely used to produce input signals for brain–computer interfaces (BCI) due to the similarities between MI-BCI and the planning–execution cycle. Despite its usefulness, MI tasks can be ambiguous to users and MI produces weaker cortical signals than motor execution. Existing MI guidance systems, which have been reported to provide visual guidance for MI and enhance MI, still have limitations: insufficient immersion for MI or poor expandability to MI for another body parts. We propose a guidance system for MI enhancement that can immerse users in MI and will be easy to extend to other body parts and target motions with few physical constraints. To make easily extendable MI guidance system, the virtual hand illusion is applied to the MI guidance system with a motion tracking sensor. MI enhancement was evaluated in 11 healthy people by comparison with another guidance system and conventional motor commands for BCI. The results showed that the proposed MI guidance system produced an amplified cortical signal compared to pure MI (p < 0.017), and a similar cortical signal as those produced by both actual execution (p > 0.534) and an MI guidance system with the rubber hand illusion (p > 0.722) in the contralateral region. Therefore, we believe that the proposed MI guidance system with the virtual hand illusion is a viable alternative to existing MI guidance systems in various applications with MI-BCI.

Résumé :
In pediatric hand and upper extremity surgery, numerous situations arise where there is variability or doubt in which code to use for a particular procedure. Was that an open reduction or closed reduction with percutaneous fixation of a fracture? Should we code trigger fingers and thumbs the same way? And, when is post-axial polydactyly a reconstruction versus excision? This JPOSNA Coding Corner will present case scenarios encountered by pediatric orthopaedic surgeons who care for common upper limb conditions. The intent is to provide guidance to aid proper surgical billing; however, it is important the ultimate code selection reflects the procedure performed and supporting documentation.

Résumé :
Stick–slip is a challenging problem in palletizing robots and constitutes one of the main problems in precision positioning control. This study analyzed the stick–slip of a four-degree-of-freedom ceiling-mounted hand-guiding collaborative robot in a working space. A brief perspective on the focus of the experimental design is presented on the stick–slip friction of a palletizing robot’s hand guidance as a collaborative robot. The palletizing robot typically has a simple mechanical structure but possesses over 16 bearings to constrain the motion of the dual-parallelogram linkage mechanism. First, the hand-guiding force was successfully measured. Second, an image model was built based on the obtained measurement results. Third, the stick–slip results for the working space were analyzed using an image model. Finally, related conclusions and recommendations are provided for precision positioning control. A significant aspect of this study is identifying the hand-guiding force in the working space of a ceiling-mounted collaborative robot. Stick–slip in hand guiding is a critical issue and is therefore important for collaborative robot users. The main contribution of this study is developing a feasible method for helping researchers understand where stick–slip occurs.

Résumé :
Purpose – This paper aims to present an integrated model of workplace guidance to enhance awareness of what constitutes good guidance, to improve workplace guidance practices in vocational education and training. Design/methodology/approach – To identify constituent aspects of workplace guidance, a systematic search of Web of Science was conducted, focussing on mentoring literature, research on institutional socialization tactics and research on didactical interventions and their effects. Findings – The model interprets workplace learning as a relational and integrated process of participation, acquisition, guidance and social interaction. Psychosocial support, structure-providing interventions and didactical interventions are discussed as essential components of guidance. How these components are enacted is influenced by the characteristics of training firms and their employees’ readiness to provide guidance. This makes guidance an intrapersonal process. Workplace guidance is also an interpersonal process in which the agencies of employees mediate the relationship between guidance and interaction, and the agencies of trainees mediate the relationship between, on the one hand, participation and acquisition and, on the other hand, social interaction. Originality/value – Integrated models of what constitutes good workplace guidance are rare. To fill this gap, this paper highlights constituent aspects of workplace guidance and brings them together in an integrated model. The model can help mentors/employees choose effective interventions to improve workplace learning.

Résumé :
Background: Hand dermatitis (HD) is one of the most common skin conditions; however, it is not a homogeneous disease entity. The severity of HD may range from very mild cases to severe chronic forms, which may result in prolonged disability and, occasionally, refractory HD. Chronic hand dermatitis (CHD) is associated with a high health- economic burden and significant loss of quality of life. Objective: Although numerous treatment options are available, the management of CHD is often difficult and unsatisfactory. There is a paucity of well-designed, randomized, controlled clinical trials in support of the efficacy of established treatment modalities. Conclusion: These guidelines cover the epidemiology, burden, quality of life, etiology, diagnosis, classification, and prevention of HD and provide guidance on management using an approach that is as evidence based as possible.

Résumé :
The subject matter of this article is the phenomenon of thesis academic guidance. It is claimed that academic guidance is one of the key factors of the successful defense of a thesis. Factors and conditions of scientific alliance formation are identified in this article. The material represents that scientific alliance formation depends on the trust between the postgraduate student and his advisor, on the one hand. On the other hand, it depends on the style of their work. Three styles of academic advisors’ work and postgraduate students’ style of work are identified and characterized. The correspondence of the style of work of the advisor and his postgraduate student is reasoned. The model of trust in academic guidance is formulated. The methods of the diagnostic assessment of work style, trust and scientific alliance by itself are shown in the article. It is stated that there may be formed three levels of scientific alliance: superficial, deep and very deep. A very deep level of scientific alliance is proved to continue through several generations. The article represents the authors’ experience in working with various advisors.

Résumé :
Repulsive guidance molecule-a (RGMa) is a member of glycosylphosphatidylinositol- (GPI-) anchored protein family, which has axon guidance function and is widely involved in the development and pathological processes of the central nervous system (CNS). On the one hand, the binding of RGMa and its receptor Neogenin can regulate axonal guidance, differentiation of neural stem cells into neurons, and the survival of these cells; on the other hand, RGMa can inhibit functional recovery of CNS by inhibiting axonal growth. A number of studies have shown that RGMa may be involved in the pathogenesis of CNS diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum diseases, cerebral infarction, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, and epilepsy. Targeting RGMa can enhance the functional recovery of CNS, so it may become a promising target for the treatment of CNS diseases. This article will comprehensively review the research progression of RGMa in various CNS diseases up to date.

Résumé :
We examined neuronal signals in the monkey medial superior temporal area (MST), the medial intraparietal area (MIP), and the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) during visually guided hand movements. Two animals were trained to use a joystick to guide a spot to a target. Many neurons responded in a direction-selective manner in this guidance task. We tested whether the direction selectivity depended on the direction of the stimulus spot or the direction of the hand movement. First, in some trials, the moving spot disappeared transiently. Second, the mapping between the hand direction and the spot direction was reversed on alternate blocks of trials. Third, we recorded the spot's movement while the animals moved the joystick and then played back that movement while the animals fixated without moving the joystick. Neurons in the three parietal areas conveyed distinct directional information. MST neurons were active and directional only on visible trials in both joystick-movement mode and playback mode and were not affected by the direction of hand movement. MIP neurons were mainly directional with respect to the hand movement, although some MIP neurons were also selective for stimulus direction. MIP neurons were much less active in playback mode. LIP neurons were active and directional in both joystick-movement mode and playback mode. Directional signals in LIP were unrelated to planning saccades. The selectivity of LIP neurons also became evident hundreds of milliseconds before the start of movement. Since the direction of movement was consistent throughout a block of trials, these signals could provide a prediction of the upcoming direction of motion. We tested this by alternating blocks of trials in which the direction was consistent or randomized. The direction selectivity developed earlier on trials in which the upcoming direction could be predicted. These results suggest that LIP neurons combine “bottom-up” visual motion signals with extraretinal, predictive signals about stimulus motion.

Résumé :
Axillary block for brachial plexus anaesthesia is a popular anaesthetic technique for hand surgery with different approaches. We investigated the efficacy of the blind and ultrasound-guided approaches administered by a hand surgeon. A total of 141 patients were prospectively randomized to Group A without and Group B with ultrasound guidance. The principal variables evaluated were number of failures, duration of surgery, time to onset of anaesthesia, volume of anaesthetic injected, and complications. The success rate and the mean time to onset of anaesthesia were significantly better under ultrasound guidance. The duration of surgery and the rate of complications did not differ. Ultrasound-guided plexus anaesthesia is markedly more effective than the blind technique when performed by a hand surgeon.

Résumé :
Mobile manipulators are robot systems capable of combining logistics and manipulation tasks. They thus fulfill an important prerequisite for the integration into flexible manufacturing systems. Another essential feature required for modern production facilities is a user-friendly and intuitive human-machine interaction. In this work the goal of code-less programming is addressed and an intuitive and safe approach to physically interact with such robot systems is derived. We present a natural approach for hand guiding a sensitive mobile manipulator in task space using a force torque sensor that is mount close to the end effector. The proposed control structure is capable of handling the kinematic redundancies of the system and avoid singular arm configurations by means of haptic feedback to the user. A detailed analysis of all possible singularities of the UR robot family is given and the functionality of the controller design is shown with laboratory experiments on our mobile manipulator.

Résumé :
The subject of this article is a theoretical study of already defined and stably predicted parameters that have been proven to affect the quality and success of completing academic programs of study based on selected criteria to ensure early identification of students who need guidance. On the one hand: these parameters can or are already used for targeted, diversity-oriented instructional guidance; on the other hand: adapted guidance and management of the training process for future teachers should take into account the individual student successes. Students with different educational paths have diverse needs for adapting, correcting, and managing this diversity. In the article, the model of four-dimensional diversity is taken for the methodology and benchmark in the study of international experience (Gardenswartz L. and Rowe A., 2003). At the center of this fourdimensional model of diversity lies a personality, followed by almost unchanged internal dimensions, such as age, gender, and ethnicity. The authors concluded that a method for identifying students who need instructional guidance and the effectiveness of follow-up should be accompanied by future intervention research

Résumé :
Studies of visually guided unimanual reaching have established that a saccade usually precedes each reach and that the reaction times (RTs) for the saccade and reach are highly correlated. The correlation of eye and hand RT is commonly taken as a measure of eye-hand coordination and is thought to assist visuospatial guidance of the hand. We asked what happens during a bimanual reach task. As with a unimanual reach, a saccade was executed first. Although latencies were fastest on unimanual trials, eye and hand RT correlation was identical whether just one or both hands reached to a single target. The average correlation was significantly reduced, however, when each hand reached simultaneously to a different target. We considered three factors that might explain the drop. We found that correlation strength depended on which hand reached first and on which hand reached to the same target as the saccade. Surprisingly, these two factors were largely independent, and the identity of the hand, left or right, had little effect. Eye-hand correlation was similar to that seen with unimanual reaching only when the hand that moved to the same target as the saccade was also the first hand to move. Thus both timing as well as spatial pattern are important in determining eye-hand coordination.

Résumé :
We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore how guidance of motor acts is influenced by the visually perceived body scheme. We found that when subjects view their hand as their opposite hand, i.e., the right hand is seen as the left hand and vice versa, activation in the visual cortex was lateralized opposite to the seen hand. This demonstrates for the first time that our body scheme to which vision relates our environment is already represented at the level of visual cortex.

Résumé :
In the context of industrial production, a worker that wants to program a robot using the hand-guidance technique needs that the robot is available to be programmed and not in operation. This means that production with that robot is stopped during that time. A way around this constraint is to perform the same manual guidance steps on a holographic representation of the digital twin of the robot, using augmented reality technologies. However, this presents the limitation of a lack of tangibility of the visual holograms that the user tries to grab. We present an interface in which some of the tangibility is provided through ultrasound-based mid-air haptics actuation. We report a user study that evaluates the impact that the presence of such haptic feedback may have on a pick-and-place task of the wrist of a holographic robot arm which we found to be beneficial.

Résumé :
Euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon in human society and plays an important role in human daily communicative activities. In the process of the development of euphemism, there are many studies on euphemism. On the one hand, it has achieved rich achievements, and on the other hand, there are also deficiencies. This article will discuss the pragmatic functions of English euphemism under the guidance of pragmatic principles. By observing and studying the applied examples of euphemism in life, at the same time to link the guidance of pragmatic principles, the paper concludes that the euphemism plays different functions in people’s lives, and enables both parties to successfully complete communication.

Résumé :
Striking the right balance between robot autonomy and human control is a core challenge in social robotics, in both technical and ethical terms. On the one hand, extended robot autonomy offers the potential for increased human productivity and for the off-loading of physical and cognitive tasks. On the other hand, making the most of human technical and social expertise, as well as maintaining accountability, is highly desirable. This is particularly relevant in domains such as medical therapy and education, where social robots hold substantial promise, but where there is a high cost to poorly performing autonomous systems, compounded by ethical concerns. We present a field study in which we evaluate SPARC (supervised progressively autonomous robot competencies), an innovative approach addressing this challenge whereby a robot progressively learns appropriate autonomous behavior from in situ human demonstrations and guidance. Using online machine learning techniques, we demonstrate that the robot could effectively acquire legible and congruent social policies in a high-dimensional child-tutoring situation needing only a limited number of demonstrations while preserving human supervision whenever desirable. By exploiting human expertise, our technique enables rapid learning of autonomous social and domain-specific policies in complex and nondeterministic environments. Last, we underline the generic properties of SPARC and discuss how this paradigm is relevant to a broad range of difficult human-robot interaction scenarios.

Résumé :
Background: The aim of the study is to determine the accuracy of hand injections with and without the aid of ultrasound (U/S) into the carpal tunnel, thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, first dorsal compartment (DC) and the radiocarpal (RC) joint. Methods: Four participants of various level of experience injected the carpal tunnel, thumb CMC, first DC, and RC joint into 40 fresh frozen cadaver specimens with blue dye and radiographic contrast. Participants 1 and 2 were injected without U/S guidance, and participants 3 and 4 were injected with U/S guidance. A successful injection was determined by both fluoroscopy and dissection/direct observation. Additional information was recorded for each injection such as median nerve infiltration and evidence of thumb CMC arthrosis. Results: The overall accuracy for carpal tunnel, thumb CMC, first DC, and RC injections were 95%, 63%, 90%, and 90%, respectively. Success was compared with and without U/S guidance. Success rates were similar for each injection site, except the thumb CMC joint, where U/S participants had 25% higher accuracy. In the setting of thumb CMC arthrosis, the incidence of success was 38% for participants with no U/S aid and 72% for participants with U/S aid. There was a significant difference between participants who used U/S with the participant with more U/S experience being more successful. Conclusion: Carpal tunnel, first DC, and RC injections had an accuracy of greater than 90%. Thumb CMC injections have a lower accuracy (63%) and one can improve accuracy with U/S. The accuracy of U/S-guided injections is dependent on the user and their experience.

Résumé :
Religion or belief is a human nature. However, the nature of religion does not develop just like that. There are other elements that contribute to influencing the actions of individuals in religion. Individuals of adolescent age have great potential to face more complex religious problems. On the one hand, adolescents are under the influence of the social space that surrounds them, and on the other hand they will encounter unstable psychological conditions. This paper aims to find out about religious guidance through writing techniques for Muslim students on the Indonesia-Malaysia border (Badau-Lubok Antu), West Kalimantan. The study was conducted on class XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Badau for the 2019/2020 academic year. Religious guidance is designed into 2 cycles in 6 meetings. The guidance group consists of 7 students. The research data was obtained through the results of students' writings/narrative texts and interviews. The data are presented qualitatively-descriptively. The results showed that there was religious awareness in Muslim students of SMA Negeri 1 Badau after following group guidance. Group members are able to identify and realize the problems they are facing.
