Jacobs, Neil. « Scholarly Communication, the Information Chain and Technology : Analyses and Reflexions ». Thesis, Loughborough University, 2001. http://eprints.rclis.org/6802/1/thesis.pdf.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
It is no longer easy to adopt deterministic explanations of scholarly communication, technology or the information chain. Complex and reflexive relations have built up between the substantive and methodological literatures relevant to these topics. This thesis aims to explore these relations with reference to two sets of interviews, one with academic researchers and the other with information professionals. These interviews were conducted in 1998-9 during the FIDDO Project, a part of the UK Joint Information Systems Committee ‘Electronic Libraries Programme’. Two major theoretical perspectives are employed to support two analytic methodologies. The first is social constructivism, which is represented methodologically in the thesis by discourse analysis. The second is actor-network theory, which is represented methodologically by co-word analysis. Both of these approaches are engaged in questions of relativism and realism in social explanation. The implementation of each of the methodologies involves innovative moves. The discourse analysis is focused on personal deixis (self-reference) located by pronoun-use, and on interest management. The co-word analysis is adapted from a scientometric technique and supplemented by the use of categorical definitions of the three topics. Each methodology is employed to analyse both sets of interviews. The four resulting sets of findings are presented in terms of the boundaries apparent between the three topical concepts. The boundaries between scholarly communication, technology and the information chain are found to vary, for example according to the identities of the interviewees responsible for the data. They also vary according to the methodology employed. Discourse analysis of interviews with information professionals suggests that the idea of technology is deployed as a dual repertoire, consisting of empowerment and automation, and that the pattern of this deployment is one constituent of the contested boundaries between the three topics. Co-word analysis of the same interviews suggests that an important focus of the boundaries is around the idea of electronic journals. Discourse analysis of interviews with academic researchers also reveals use of the dual technology repertoire, but in addition suggests that the category of formal scholarly communication acts to legitimate the interests of researchers. Co-word analysis of the same interviews suggests that a number of models of document access were in play, including those based on the library, on paper and on documents. The implications of these substantive analyses include that studies based on ‘user needs’ or the ‘impact of technology’ could benefit from an analysis of how such topics are constructed in particular accounts. Finally, the question is addressed as to the extent that the results of the discourse and the co-word analyses (of the same data) are compatible so that they can be meaningfully synthesised. That is, do the two approaches give rise to outcomes that have similar epistemological status? The question is answered ‘empirically’ with reference to the issue of reflexivity as it is configured in the two approaches, and it is confirmed that the two types of outcome are not compatible due to profound differences in the positions adopted by their respective informing theories. The methodological implications of this include that those engaged in relativist research practice need to be aware the ways in which epistemological and reflexive issues are relevant to their actions.

Résumé :
This thesis presents a doctoral research aimed to propose a generic model of scientific information management for research institutes, based on principles of scientific communication and open access. This is a theoretical and exploratory research. From the methodological point of view, it is a mixed methods study which adopted the concurrent triangulation strategy. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and checklist, and then submitted to statistical and text analysis. In addition to collecting and analyzing empirical data, it was performed the analysis of scientific communication and information management models identified in the literature. The research sphere was consisted of researchers linked to the research units of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the sample basis, defined from intentional non-probabilistic sampling, were the researchers of the Brazilian Centre for Physics Research and Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences. The main result of the investigation is the generic model of scientific information management for research institutes, based on scientific communication and open access in its textual and graphical version. In the model, input and output information-flows are systematized by scientific information management processes which are involved from the perspective of scientific communication and open access. Its structure, beyond embedding key concepts, considers the ambient of research institute as an open system where there is the flow of scientific information. The proposed model is also constituted by flexible elements that represent institutional and disciplinary specificities, and vary depending on the research institutes' contexts. Besides, the whole set of elements and relationships among them are under constant influence of forces originating from the scientific community in a broad perspective.

Résumé :
In spite of the fact that blogs are not coming of age yet, they have meant a true revolution regarding content development. A set of features such as their simplicity, easy management and straitghtforwardness in web publishing has turned the blogosphere into a large‐scale conversation of a million voices, which is growing at a fast pace as an immediate, interactive, multi‐directional and decentralized communication pattern. The union of these characteristics turned blogs into a valuable tool for the scientific community, circumstance that did not let that fact go unnoticed by the scientific community, and subsequently they had integrated them into their activities in a natural way. Regarding to the specific field of Library and Information Science, although terms such as “bliblioblogosfera”, “bibliogsfera” or “biblogsfera” are widely known, it is significant that there is not a consensus reached about what term should be used. Additionally, if we try to go deep into this area, there is no easy answers to questions such as: ‘what is the “biblogsfera?’, ‘who participates in it?’ or ‘what does it contain’. This research is meant to provide an overview of the Spanish “Biblogsfera”, trying to establish a proposal of definition for it, a classification system and a content rating and an author identification based on objective data obtained by way of a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the blogs which comprise it.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The electronic information sources have become an integral part of the library services and they have a crucial role to play in the higher education. Undergraduate students depend their studies on electronic sources. However, electronic information sources cannot be used effectively without the necessary training by the library. The right instruction should be given to students on how each electronic source should be used. The evaluation of the information electronic sources though a survey on the students´ opinion is of equal importance. The survey can help the library to find the real educational needs of the students as regards the electronic sources, to discover any possible weaknesses in the whole process and to improve its electronic services.

Résumé :
Due to their intangible nature, digital resources are particularly complex to promote and enhance in a library. Although essential, the development of specific and federated reporting tools common to all documentation, digital or paper, can not be an end in itself. Many readers see the library as a privileged place, embodied and travelled by their daily lives. Hence the need to also consider the value of these resources from the physical space of the library. The rise of e-books, the diversification of new digital reading devices as well as the emergence of new technological tools dedicated to interfacing material objects and the Internet favour such an approach, which may contribute further to the better integration of digital resources within the library as a whole.

Résumé :
A usability evaluation was carried out of the recently-launched South London and Maudsley NHS Trust library web site using a variety of standard methodologies: content and design evaluation of selected comparable sites, focus groups, a questionnaire survey of library and web development staff, heuristic evaluation, observation testing, card sorting/cluster analysis, and label intuitiveness/category membership testing. All test participants were staff of or providers of services to the trust. Demographic information was recorded for each participant. Unsuccessful attempts were made to evaluate user feedback, and to compare usability test results with usage statistics. Test participants’ overall responses to the site were enthusiastic and favourable, indicating the scope and content of the site to be broadly appropriate to the user group. Numerous suggestions for new content areas were made by testers. Usability problems were discovered in two main areas: in the organisation of the site, and in the terminology used to refer to information services and sources. On the basis of test results, proposals for a revised menu structure, improved accessibility, and changes to the terminology used within the site are presented.

Résumé :
The general aim of this research is to understand how the selection of information sources by bilingual Brazilian Sign Language/Portuguese high school teachers from Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina, Campus São José happens. The specific objectives are: to characterize the bilingual school teachers according to their academic background, experience and professional practice, to identify the information sources used by teachers in the teaching-learning process, to understand the reasons leading to the choice of the information sources and to identify the criteria used by teachers for selecting the information sources in bilingual education. It presents a review on the literature about the history of deaf education; deaf education in Brazil; modalities of deaf education; sign language; access, selection and quality of information sources. For the study , a methodology with a qualitative approach will be used, which consists of the study of a descriptive case study that is supported by literature to achieve the goals. The research includes the teachers who taught at a bilingual high school in the second half of 2010. The instrument of the data collection is the interview script. For the data analysis, the technique of content analysis of Bardin was used. The survey results indicate that the sources that are most used by teachers in the teaching-learning process are: experimentation, book, food, toys, study trips, and teaching materials prepared by the teacher. The reasons for the use of information sources are: the presence of visual information sources and motivation of students in learning. Considering the criteria for the selection of sources, the selected as very important are: a source that is current; a well prepared and easy to understand text , pictures and / or illustrations; level of information that is appropriate for the age group. It was concluded that high school teachers need to adapt the bilingual informative materials to the reality of the deaf using a visuospatial channel for communication, represented by the sign language. The visuals resources are extremely important for the understanding of the information provided by the sources. The bilingual school teachers follow the logic of adjustment to the user to choose information sources and are concerned about the quality and convenience of the sources used in the teaching-learning process.

Résumé :
Open access movement is increasingly expanding from scientific publications to research data. Initiatives to make research data broadly accessible and fully available for reuse are emerging from a variety of stakeholders at international and European scale – states, funding agencies, publishers and scientific communities themselves. Research data openness is achieved through different policies, technical and legal mecanisms, but also lie on good data management practices. While France is beginning to get into the Open research data movement, it is important to consider that data policies are also needed at university level. Librarians have a serious part to play in leading on institutional data policy, understanding researchers needs and helping in metadata creation. Open access to research data is thus a unique opportunity for librarians to redesign their connection with scientific communities inside research institutions.

Résumé :
Digital information and economic activity: gaps and progress in Spain during the period 2007-2010 In this dissertation we evaluate some of the progresses and gaps that can be observed in the supply and delivery of digital information for economic activity in Spain during the period 2007-2010 from four different viewpoints. These four study areas are: - the Spanish e-Administration as an energizing factor of all national economic sectors, and the digital information market in particular; - the contribution made by the Spanish Chambers of Commerce in digital information for economic activity; - changes, gaps and progresses made in the provision of digital information to the agricultural sector; - the presence of subjects related to the information on economic activity in the curricula aimed to train information professionals at the Spanish universities. To put in context the research work, we have also analyzed the development and current status of each of the four study areas. The dissertation highlights the importance the Spanish Public Administration has had in the past, and still has, in the development of the electronic information industry in Spain. Contributions made by private initiatives are also discussed. Furthermore, in the four study areas we observe dynamics which take place at very different speeds. This depends on the contribution of the actor or group of actors involved in each case. Particularly notable was the low presence of information on economic activity in the curricula aimed to train information professionals in Spanish universities.

Résumé :
‘Rethinking intellectual commons’ analyzes, from a socio-technical view, the legal-political tensions that arise between the appropriation and release of intellectual goods and works in the digital age. This thesis describes the processes of co-construction between regulations on authorial and copy rights and digital technologies oriented to manage these rights. For this purpose, three cases which evince the conflict between the appropiation and the release of intellectual goods, and show the processes of co-construction, are analyzed. The first case of analysis is an anti-copying artifact designed by the trading corporation Sony-BMG Music Entertainment. The second one is the open licensing system of selective reservation of authorial and copy rights of Creative Commons Corporation. The third one is the management system of intellectual works in the virtual world called Second Life. The new regulative forms linked to the design of technologies define the political, cultural, social and economical future of our societies. This thesis aims at encouraging and strengthening these legal-political and technological discussions on the regional and global scale.

The aim of this research is to detect different sources that researchers use most frequently in their doctoral theses and assess the local needs of library users. Analysis citations in academic publications is a very interesting method when you need to know how the information is used by researchers. Bibliographical references of thesis can offer us a very detailed view of the use of the library collection. This method has been complemented with users opinion collected in a questionnaire. Combination of these two techniques has helped reduce the subjectivity inherent in data analysis. The study shows that the authors of the doctoral theses cite almost in the same proportion both magazine articles and monographs. Résumé :
Public library systems in India are not so effective due to lack of efficient resource sharing and networking to achieve optimum utility of resources as well as to provide need based services. The present library system can be improved by application of ICT and enabling participation. A Kerala Public Library Network (KPLNET), and use of an integrated library automation package in all public libraries can achieve this. The web portal of the Public Library Network maintained by Kerala State Library Council the controlling organization can extend the use of resources and accessibility of the system transcending time and space. Sharing of resources will be much easier through KPLNET. Public can easily access the services through this system for borrowing books, searching of catalogue, e-reading etc. KPLNET can provide the public easy access to the data online. Through multi user licences to acquired content, and introducing resource-sharing programmes the public libraries can reduce their expenses and boost the services. The individual village libraries can develop content on local aspects, which can be pooled by KPLNET. The major objective of the KPLNET will be to unite all public libraries in the State under a single umbrella. Kerala State Library Council (KSLC) controlling more than 7000 public libraries will be the implementing agency for KPNNET. KSLC can perform more effectively once it implements the proposed KPLN. This project suggests e-governance of public libraries under KSLC with a library network using a web enabled system that act as an interactive public interface to enable the public for participation in governance of libraries and also for effective utilization of the library resources.
