PurposeThe aim of this article is to summarize recent published and unpublished research from our 2 laboratories on improving speech understanding in complex listening environments by listeners fit with cochlear implants (CIs).MethodCI listeners were tested in 2 listening environments. One was a simulation of a restaurant with multiple, diffuse noise sources, and the other was a cocktail party with 2 spatially separated point sources of competing speech. At issue was the value of the following sources of information, or interventions, on speech understanding: (a) visual information, (b) adaptive beamformer microphones and remote microphones, (c) bimodal fittings, that is, a CI and contralateral low-frequency acoustic hearing, (d) hearing preservation fittings, that is, a CI with preserved low-frequency acoustic in the same ear plus low-frequency acoustic hearing in the contralateral ear, and (e) bilateral CIs.ResultsA remote microphone provided the largest improvement in speech understanding. Visual information and adaptive beamformers ranked next, while bimodal fittings, bilateral fittings, and hearing preservation provided significant but less benefit than the other interventions or sources of information. Only bilateral CIs allowed listeners high levels of speech understanding when signals were roved over the frontal plane.ConclusionsThe evidence supports the use of bilateral CIs and hearing preservation surgery for best speech understanding in complex environments. Obesity and childhood overweight is a worldwide epidemic that has significant long-term public health implications both in developed and developing countries. South Africa, which has a well-documented burden of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases, now also has an increasing burden of obesity and noncommunicable diseases (NCD) such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This article describes results of formative research on childhood obesity risk factors with parents of school-age children in the Western Cape region of South Africa. We interviewed parents living in low-income urban, rural, and township communities on nutrition and physical activity, media use, and potential social marketing messages. Study aims were threefold: to collect formative information on media use and health knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to support the development of an obesity prevention social marketing campaign targeting youth; to identify parents' preferred sources of health information, and to obtain reactions to potential obesity prevention social marketing messages. Overall, the family and community nutrition and physical activity environments in the Western Cape are highly complex. Parents report major safety concerns, lack of organized markets or other sources of healthy foods in rural and township areas, and lack of resources for physical activity. We also identified preferred sources for health information primarily through print and radio, obtained information about possible channels to reach parents, and identified potential message strategies to promote healthy lifestyles similar to some HIV/AIDS social marketing campaigns in Africa. This information supports future childhood obesity prevention social marketing.

This research aims to determine the classification of articles in journal of Pustakaloka, and specifically to identify the largest and smallest subject groups based on JITA Classification System of Library and Information Science. Data for this research consist of 174 articles from 2009-2021 publication. To assign the subject of an article, its title and keywords were analyzed. Abstract and article content were also analyzed if the title and keywords were not able to reflect the subject. The data were coded according to the JITA scheme, sorted and counted to build up subject groups. The three largest subject groups are Users, literacy and reading, followed by Information sources, supports, channels, then by Management and Information technology and library technology. Meanwhile, the three smallest subject groups are Information use and sociology of information, followed by Theoretical and general aspects of libraries and information, Housing technologies, and the last is Publishing and legal issues. This research identified that in general, the articles in Pustakaloka are concentrated on some of intermediate and specific level that cover the aspect of users, directional and management functions, pragmatic and technical issues.

In this work, a method is established to calibrate a model that describes the basic dynamics of DNA damage and repair. The model can be used to extend planning for radiotherapy and hyperthermia in order to include the biological effects. In contrast to “syntactic” models (e.g., describing molecular kinetics), the model used here describes radiobiological semantics, resulting in a more powerful model but also in a far more challenging calibration. Model calibration is attempted from clonogenic assay data (doses of 0–6 Gy) and from time-resolved comet assay data obtained within 6 h after irradiation with 6 Gy. It is demonstrated that either of those two sources of information alone is insufficient for successful model calibration, and that both sources of information combined in a holistic approach are necessary to find viable model parameters. Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) with simulated annealing is used for parameter search, revealing two aspects that are beneficial to resolving the calibration problem: (1) assessing posterior parameter distributions instead of point-estimates and (2) combining calibration runs from different assays by joining posterior distributions instead of running a single calibration run with a combined, computationally very expensive objective function.

Abstract Using a polarimetric Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar to distinguish Bragg scatterers from insects and birds in an optically clear atmosphere has the potential to provide information on convective boundary layer depth. Measured median differential reflectivities ZDR of Bragg scatterers lie between −0.08 and 0.06 dB, which supports the hypothesis that the intrinsic ZDR of Bragg scatters is 0 dB. Thus, the intrinsic 0 dB of Bragg scatter can be used for verifying of ZDR radar calibration. Measured copolar correlation coefficients ρhv have distributions peaked at about 0.998–1.0. If insects and birds are spatially separated from Bragg scatterers, the dual-polarization capability of the WSR-88D allows distinguishing echoes from these two types of scatterers since ZDR from biota is significantly larger than 0 dB. In mixtures of Bragg and biota scatter, polarimetric spectral analysis shows differences in portions of the H and V spectra where birds and insects could be contaminating echoes from Bragg scatterers. The values of ZDR ≈ 0 and ρhv ≈ 1 that characterize Bragg scatterers allow coherent summation of signals from the H and V receiver channels and restoration of measurement capability lost as a result of splitting power into H and V channels. Further enhancements to data collection and signal processing allow power measurement, with a standard deviation of about 1 dB, of weak echoes from Bragg scatterers having equivalent reflectivity factors of about −28 dBZ at distance of 10 km from the radar. This level of reflectivity corresponds to a refractive index structure parameter of about 4 × 10−15 m−2/3, a typical magnitude found in maritime air.

Introduction. For hazardous industries, the reliability of information and measuring equipment must ensure an almost complete absence of failure events, with their probability as low as 10-6. This requirement can be satisfied using various approaches, one of which is reservation. Reservation methods are classified into several types depending on such factors, as the operating mode of an object, failure types, frequency rate, etc. Majority redundancy schemes are rarely used in measuring equipment, particularly in measuring channels, largely because this method was initially aimed at improving the reliability of discrete digital devices. Thus far, no mathematical support for applying the method of majority reservation in measuring channels of analogue values has been developed. This gap determined the relevance of this study.Aim. To develop a methodological support for applying the method of majority reservation with the purpose of improving the level of measurement accuracy.Materials and methods. Both Russian and foreign sources published over the past 40 years on the topic of processing small samples when designing measuring channels for information and measuring systems were reviewed. The nonparametric Mann-Whitney rank test was applied to process small samples. Other research methods included mathematical modelling, as well as the mathematical apparatus of measurement theory andтsystems theory.Results. A measuring module with a redundant structure was simulated. Parametric and nonparametric rank criteria were considered. An algorithm allowing identification of the failure of a channel in a measuring module with a redundant structure was developed. The computational complexity of the developed algorithm is estimated by a polynomial of the second degree.Conclusion. The use of nonparametric rank criteria for processing small samples, as well as diagnostic situations for various combinations of these criteria, supports statistically grounded decision on the state of measuring channels. In the future, this method will be applied for diagnostic control of the serviceability of technological equipment used in fuel combustion, namely in boiler plants and installations for thermal waste destruction.

Experiments on the effect of Selective vibrational, translational and orientations excitation of reactants in bimolecular reactions can give important insights into the microscopic dynamics of elementary chemical reactions. The information obtained in such experiments can be compared with the results of theoretical calculations of the reaction dynamics based on ab initio potential energy surfaces and is also of basic interest to improve the kinetic data used in detailed chemical kinetic modelling.Rotational and vibrational energy transfer between H2 and H0 has been studied directly using Raman excitation combined with time resolved CARS spectroscopy. The competition between reactive and inelastic channels was investigated for reactions of atoms with vibrationally excited H2 and HCl molecules. Selective vibrational excitation was achieved by using infrared laser or Raman-pumping. The reaction products were detected by time resolved atomic line resonance absorption mass-spectrometry and CARS-spectroscopy. In some cases information on the contributions of adiabatic and non-adiabatic reactive pathways could be obtained. The reaction H + O2→ OH + O has been studied using translationally hot H atoms at various energies. Absolute total reactive cross-sections, nascent rotational state distributions and information on the distribution of orientations of the OH angular momentum vector using polarized dissociation and analysis laser sources have been obtained.

Abstract Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at z ≳ 4 provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Very Large Telescope/MUSE, and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass (≈107.6 M ⊙) galaxy at z = 3.98 (also see Vanzella et al.). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including C iv λ λ1548, 1550, He ii λ1640, O iii] λ λ1661, 1666, [Ne iii] λ3868, [O ii] λ3727, and the Balmer series of hydrogen from this galaxy, indicating a metal-poor H ii region (≲0.12 Z ⊙) powered by massive stars. Further, we detect a metal-enriched damped Lyα system (DLA) associated with the galaxy with the H i column density of N H I ≈ 1021.8 cm−2. The metallicity of the associated DLA may reach the supersolar metallicity (≳Z ⊙). Moreover, thanks to JWST and gravitational lensing, we present the resolved UV slope (β) map at the spatial resolution of ≈100 pc at z = 4, with steep UV slopes reaching β ≈ −2.5 around three star-forming clumps. Combining with low-redshift analogs, our observations suggest that low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies, which dominate reionization, could be surrounded by a high covering fraction of the metal-enriched, neutral-gaseous clouds. This implies that the metal enrichment of low-mass galaxies is highly efficient, and further supports that in low-mass galaxies, only a small fraction of ionizing radiation can escape through the interstellar or circumgalactic channels with low-column-density neutral gas.

End-user feedback has an essential role in the requirement’s identification, prioritization, and management of the software evolution process. Several approaches are proposed for utilizing user-pushed feedback collected from social media, forums, and review systems. The collected feedback via the online channels contains a variety of information. Thus, the researchers proposed analytical approaches to classify feedback according to the data it holds. Still, recent results indicate that no single classifier works best for all feedback types and information sources. Also, online feedback does not have a direct mapping to the requirements, and it does not contain user context data. This causes wasting in developers’ effort in understanding and analyzing feedback. On the other hand, online feedback cannot be used to explore user satisfaction and acceptance of the implemented and planned requirements. Likewise, the developer cannot collect feedback from a specific segment of the users. To overcome the deficiency of online feedback, this paper proposes a novel approach that utilizes pulling feedback from users while using the software. The proposed approach consists of a model and process for structuring feedback requests, linking feedback to the requirements, embedding feedback with the user context information, specifying the target audience for the feedback request, analyzing collected feedback depending on predefined interpretation rules, which provide insights that support developers in release planning. The feedback request model and process are implemented by a tool called FeatureEcho which was evaluated in a software company by conducting a case study for upgrading a governmental internet portal. The results indicate that FeatureEcho is a valuable step towards increasing the understanding of the end-users needs which supports the decision-making procedure of software evolution.

AbstractCoastal wetlands are considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. Understanding their structures and functions is important for coastal environmental management and development. Airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has emerged as an effective tool for creating high-resolution digital surface models (DSM, highest elevation points) and digital terrain models (DTM, ground only points), which are vital geographic information sources for various applications in coastal areas, and investigating spatial patterns of vegetation in areas that are difficult to access. This paper investigates LiDAR’s capability for mapping marine wetlands, extracting vegetation and channel networks, and identifying intertidal zones. The Yellow River Delta, China, was selected as a study site to conduct experiments. With only a 4.5-h flight, an area of more than 670 km2 was surveyed with great detail. High-resolution DSMs and DTMs were generated, the vegetation coverage and heights were extracted using methods based on height and multi-return and the results were compared, and the water and tidal channels, which reflect the complete water transport system in the area, were mapped and measured. By combining LiDAR data and local tidal observations, the intertidal zone, which is a significant part of coastal wetlands, is clearly identified.

It is no longer easy to adopt deterministic explanations of scholarly communication, technology or the information chain. Complex and reflexive relations have built up between the substantive and methodological literatures relevant to these topics. This thesis aims to explore these relations with reference to two sets of interviews, one with academic researchers and the other with information professionals. These interviews were conducted in 1998-9 during the FIDDO Project, a part of the UK Joint Information Systems Committee ‘Electronic Libraries Programme’. Two major theoretical perspectives are employed to support two analytic methodologies. The first is social constructivism, which is represented methodologically in the thesis by discourse analysis. The second is actor-network theory, which is represented methodologically by co-word analysis. Both of these approaches are engaged in questions of relativism and realism in social explanation. The implementation of each of the methodologies involves innovative moves. The discourse analysis is focused on personal deixis (self-reference) located by pronoun-use, and on interest management. The co-word analysis is adapted from a scientometric technique and supplemented by the use of categorical definitions of the three topics. Each methodology is employed to analyse both sets of interviews. The four resulting sets of findings are presented in terms of the boundaries apparent between the three topical concepts. The boundaries between scholarly communication, technology and the information chain are found to vary, for example according to the identities of the interviewees responsible for the data. They also vary according to the methodology employed. Discourse analysis of interviews with information professionals suggests that the idea of technology is deployed as a dual repertoire, consisting of empowerment and automation, and that the pattern of this deployment is one constituent of the contested boundaries between the three topics. Co-word analysis of the same interviews suggests that an important focus of the boundaries is around the idea of electronic journals. Discourse analysis of interviews with academic researchers also reveals use of the dual technology repertoire, but in addition suggests that the category of formal scholarly communication acts to legitimate the interests of researchers. Co-word analysis of the same interviews suggests that a number of models of document access were in play, including those based on the library, on paper and on documents. The implications of these substantive analyses include that studies based on ‘user needs’ or the ‘impact of technology’ could benefit from an analysis of how such topics are constructed in particular accounts. Finally, the question is addressed as to the extent that the results of the discourse and the co-word analyses (of the same data) are compatible so that they can be meaningfully synthesised. That is, do the two approaches give rise to outcomes that have similar epistemological status? The question is answered ‘empirically’ with reference to the issue of reflexivity as it is configured in the two approaches, and it is confirmed that the two types of outcome are not compatible due to profound differences in the positions adopted by their respective informing theories. The methodological implications of this include that those engaged in relativist research practice need to be aware the ways in which epistemological and reflexive issues are relevant to their actions.

This thesis presents a doctoral research aimed to propose a generic model of scientific information management for research institutes, based on principles of scientific communication and open access. This is a theoretical and exploratory research. From the methodological point of view, it is a mixed methods study which adopted the concurrent triangulation strategy. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and checklist, and then submitted to statistical and text analysis. In addition to collecting and analyzing empirical data, it was performed the analysis of scientific communication and information management models identified in the literature. The research sphere was consisted of researchers linked to the research units of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the sample basis, defined from intentional non-probabilistic sampling, were the researchers of the Brazilian Centre for Physics Research and Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences. The main result of the investigation is the generic model of scientific information management for research institutes, based on scientific communication and open access in its textual and graphical version. In the model, input and output information-flows are systematized by scientific information management processes which are involved from the perspective of scientific communication and open access. Its structure, beyond embedding key concepts, considers the ambient of research institute as an open system where there is the flow of scientific information. The proposed model is also constituted by flexible elements that represent institutional and disciplinary specificities, and vary depending on the research institutes' contexts. Besides, the whole set of elements and relationships among them are under constant influence of forces originating from the scientific community in a broad perspective.

In spite of the fact that blogs are not coming of age yet, they have meant a true revolution regarding content development. A set of features such as their simplicity, easy management and straitghtforwardness in web publishing has turned the blogosphere into a large‐scale conversation of a million voices, which is growing at a fast pace as an immediate, interactive, multi‐directional and decentralized communication pattern. The union of these characteristics turned blogs into a valuable tool for the scientific community, circumstance that did not let that fact go unnoticed by the scientific community, and subsequently they had integrated them into their activities in a natural way. Regarding to the specific field of Library and Information Science, although terms such as “bliblioblogosfera”, “bibliogsfera” or “biblogsfera” are widely known, it is significant that there is not a consensus reached about what term should be used. Additionally, if we try to go deep into this area, there is no easy answers to questions such as: ‘what is the “biblogsfera?’, ‘who participates in it?’ or ‘what does it contain’. The electronic information sources have become an integral part of the library services and they have a crucial role to play in the higher education. Undergraduate students depend their studies on electronic sources. However, electronic information sources cannot be used effectively without the necessary training by the library. The right instruction should be given to students on how each electronic source should be used. The evaluation of the information electronic sources though a survey on the students´ opinion is of equal importance. The survey can help the library to find the real educational needs of the students as regards the electronic sources, to discover any possible weaknesses in the whole process and to improve its electronic services.

Due to their intangible nature, digital resources are particularly complex to promote and enhance in a library. Although essential, the development of specific and federated reporting tools common to all documentation, digital or paper, can not be an end in itself. Many readers see the library as a privileged place, embodied and travelled by their daily lives. Hence the need to also consider the value of these resources from the physical space of the library. The rise of e-books, the diversification of new digital reading devices as well as the emergence of new technological tools dedicated to interfacing material objects and the Internet favour such an approach, which may contribute further to the better integration of digital resources within the library as a whole.

With recent strategic frameworks, the European Commission launched a new integrated approach to long-term preservation and access of the digital cultural heritage and scientific knowledge. Its communications outline the vision of digitization, online accessibility and digital preservation of heritage objects, highlighting the initiative and role of digital libraries. The article overviews provisions concerning the cultural policy and heritage digitization within normative documents of the Republic of Lithuania with the focus on legislation on published documents. It highlights the initiative of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania concerning a draft law on legal deposit, programmes and current projects for long-term preservation of the cultural heritage, and cooperation between memory institutions on the basis of the Integrated Virtual Library Information System.

Scientific dissemination and scientific publications serve to channel the produce and facilitate entry to the scientific field. In an academic institution, a scientific publication provides greater visibility and allows to position itself in the area of knowledge to which it belongs. Thus, it enriches by the contact with other institutions and the exchange of all types of material. This study aimed to know the conditions of relevance, feasibility and viability of a scientific publication in the School of Information Sciences (National University of Córdoba). To do this, we attempted to establish, first, the state of the art in scientific publications, publicize the position of the National University of Cordoba and, finally, to identify concrete the possibilities which has The Sciences School Information (ECI) for a publication of this kind.

Nowadays, Ukraine’s education system is experiencing global changes that require innovative approaches to the management of educational institutions. In addition, modern requirements for the management of educational institutions, the quality of the education system require a high level of professionalism from all participants of the educational process, especially future specialists. Current social processes taking place in our country have caused an urgent need to increase the level of information and communication competence of future specialists in agriculture, education and pedagogy, who will be able to perform their duties productively in unpredictable conditions, especially under quarantine restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Application of modern computer technologies is one of the compulsory prerequisites for the use of information and communication competencies of future agrarian specialists in educational institutions. Educational interaction in blended learning can be implemented on the basis of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Internet technologies. Their advantages include the focus on collaborative learning technologies, wide opportunities for communication (exchange of messages, chats, comments, etc.), exchange of files of various formats, etc. However, they have some drawbacks: teachers are often forced to work with a specific interface within a certain logic of the environment; creation of educational components of the educational environment is available mainly to the teacher, which sometimes complicates joint work of the subjects of the learning process, i.e. there is no communication with the network community; operational load on the school server and problems with system administration. The reasons for the introduction of cloud technology into education in the process of formation of information and communication competence of future agrarian specialists are as follows: significant financial investments in the purchase and maintenance of equipment and software products; rather difficult adaptation of finished software products to the teaching process, and, as a consequence, only fragmentary use; the need to develop the information environment of educational institutions. The main benefits of common cloud storage in the formation of information and communication competence of future agrarian specialists are as follows: file exchange can be carried out in different directions: student – student, university – student, teacher – student; virtually no training is required to work with cloud storage; it supports different types of files that can be published on the Internet; it is possible to work with several files and folders at the same time; data on the local computer is automatically updated when you update the Internet; when multiple users work at the same time, the file update applies to all users. Therefore, information and communication competence is the ability and willingness to effectively use information and communication technologies within professional activities. Information and communication competence of the employee of the educational institution can be defined as the conscious, purposeful and effective use of knowledge, skills and labor actions in the field of computer science in the framework of one’s professional activity, namely educational activities. Analysis of the required knowledge, skills and labor actions of employees of the educational institution has allowed us to identify the basic information and communication competencies for the management level: construction of information space at the educational institution, organization of communication channels and ways to protect information; ensuring openness and accessibility for all participants of the normative-legal sphere of management of educational institution; analysis, formation and presentation of information about the activities of the educational institution, its property status, income and expenses; creation and updating of databases of all participants of educational relations at the educational institution; creation and provision of a system for monitoring the quality of the educational process, educational achievements of students, activities of the educational institution; possession of skills of work with electronic sources of normative-legal maintenance and systematization of normative-legal base of management of educational institution; design, compilation and processing of documentation using appropriate software.

The emergence of COVID-19 has resulted in workplace adaptations globally. This study aims to understand the challenges faced by employees during COVID-19 workplace adaptation that could cause mental health distress. Fifteen focus groups were conducted with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and/or human resource professionals (n=60) from various occupational settings in Ireland between April and May 2021. The findings showed that stress arose from three primary sources: technostress, work-from-home adaptation, and COVID-19 longevity. Supports from organizations, such as providing timely information, Employee Assistance Programs, informal communication channels and the reinforcement of COVID-19 control measures, are discussed as the possible solutions to mitigate employees’ mental stress. This study contributes to the understanding of employees’ stress and the development of an intervention plan for alleviating the mental health impacts arising from occupational adaption due to COVID-19. The findings also have implications for workplace coping strategies during future global public health crises.

Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 15] This paper investigates the new technical skills that are needed for Data Engineering. Past research is compared to new research which creates a list of the 20 top tech-nical skills required by a Data Engineer. The growing availability of Data Engineering jobs is discussed. The research methodology describes the gathering of sample data and then the use of Pig and MapReduce on AWS (Amazon Web Services) to count occurrences of Data Engineering technical skills from 100 Indeed.com job advertisements in July, 2017. Background: A decade ago, Data Engineering relied heavily on the technology of Relational Database Management Sys-tems (RDBMS). For example, Grisham, P., Krasner, H., and Perry D. (2006) described an Empirical Soft-ware Engineering Lab (ESEL) that introduced Relational Database concepts to students with hands-on learning that they called “Data Engineering Education with Real-World Projects.” However, as seismic im-provements occurred for the processing of large distributed datasets, big data analytics has moved into the forefront of the IT industry. As a result, the definition for Data Engineering has broadened and evolved to include newer technology that supports the distributed processing of very large amounts of data (e.g. Hadoop Ecosystem and NoSQL Databases). This paper examines the technical skills that are needed to work as a Data Engineer in today’s rapidly changing technical environment. Research is presented that re-views 100 job postings for Data Engineers from Indeed (2017) during the month of July, 2017 and then ranks the technical skills in order of importance. The results are compared to earlier research by Stitch (2016) that ranked the top technical skills for Data Engineers in 2016 using LinkedIn to survey 6,500 peo-ple that identified themselves as Data Engineers. Methodology: A sample of 100 Data Engineering job postings were collected and analyzed from Indeed during July, 2017. The job postings were pasted into a text file and then related words were grouped together to make phrases. For example, the word “data” was put into context with other related words to form phrases such as “Big Data”, “Data Architecture” and “Data Engineering”. A text editor was used for this task and the find/replace functionality of the text editor proved to be very useful for this project. After making phrases, the large text file was uploaded to the Amazon cloud (AWS) and a Pig batch job using Map Reduce was leveraged to count the occurrence of phrases and words within the text file. The resulting phrases/words with occurrence counts was download to a Personal Computer (PC) and then was loaded into an Excel spreadsheet. Using a spreadsheet enabled the phrases/words to be sorted by oc-currence count and then facilitated the filtering out of irrelevant words. Another task to prepare the data involved the combination phrases or words that were synonymous. For example, the occurrence count for the acronym ELT and the occurrence count for the acronym ETL were added together to make an overall ELT/ETL occurrence count. ETL is a Data Warehousing acronym for Extracting, Transforming and Loading data. This task required knowledge of the subject area. Also, some words were counted in lower case and then the same word was also counted in mixed or upper case, thus producing two or three occur-rence counts for the same word. These different counts were added together to make an overall occur-rence count for the word (e.g. word occurrence counts for Python and python were added together). Fi-nally, the Indeed occurrence counts were sorted to allow for the identification of a list of the top 20 tech-nical skills needed by a Data Engineer. Contribution: Provides new information about the Technical Skills needed by Data Engineers. Findings: Twelve of the 20 Stitch (2016) report phrases/words that are highlighted in bold above matched the tech-nical skills mentioned in the Indeed research. I considered C, C++ and Java a match to the broader cate-gory of Programing in the Indeed data. Although the ranked order of the two lists did not match, the top five ranked technical skills for both lists are similar. The reader of this paper might consider the skills of SQL, Python, Hadoop/HDFS to be very important technical skills for a Data Engineer. Although the programming language R is very popular with Data Scientists, it did not make the top 20 skills for Data Engineering; it was in the overall list from Indeed. The R programming language is oriented towards ana-lytical processing (e.g. used by Data Scientists), whereas the Python language is a scripting and object-oriented language that facilitates the creation of Data Pipelines (e.g. used by Data Engineers). Because the data was collected one year apart and from very different data sources, the timing of the data collection and the different data sources could account for some of the differences in the ranked lists. It is worth noting that the Indeed research ranked list introduced the technical skills of Design Skills, Spark, AWS (Amazon Web Services), Data Modeling, Kafta, Scala, Cloud Computing, Data Pipelines, APIs and AWS Redshift Data Warehousing to the top 20 ranked technical skills list. The Stitch (2016) report that did not have matches to the Indeed (2017) sample data for Linux, Databases, MySQL, Business Intelligence, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Data Analysis and Unix. Although many of these Stitch top 20 technical skills were on the Indeed list, they did not make the top 20 ranked technical skills. Recommendations for Practitioners: Some of the skills needed for Database Technologies are transferable to Data Engineering. Recommendation for Researchers: None Impact on Society: There is not much peer reviewed literature on the subject of Data Engineering, this paper will add new information to the subject area. Future Research: I'm developing a Specialization in Data Engineering for the MS in Data Science degree at our university.
