Résumé :
This chapter considers the question of how an authoritarian Arab state enables or encumbers Islamist mobilization. It elucidates a different model of state action—different in both content and form: in what policies are pursued and in how they are implemented. The chapter suggests that the Moroccan state under King Mohammed VI has not simply elevated one Islamist group at the expense of the other, but rather, it has aimed to impede and impel distinct forms of activism within groups—in this case, attempting to draw new divides between religious and political modes of activism. These are policies that can be understood not simply by the old theory of divide and conquer, but by one more aptly conceptualized as selective suppression.

Résumé :
Cerebral palsy (CP) describes a group of disorders of movement/posture causing activity limitation that are attributed to nonprogressive disturbances in the immature brain that can change over time. The immature human brain undergoes organizational changes during intrauterine and postnatal life creating potential temporal periods of selective vulnerability to damage. Understanding the compensatory plasticity process after the brain injury may provide new insights into the pathogenesis of CP.

Résumé :
Investors are inextricably linked to financial institutions, money managers, and the products they market. Mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), hedge funds, and pension funds manage or hold roughly $55 trillion in combined wealth. This chapter examines these topics with a behavioral finance approach, focusing on two main ideas: the performance and rationality of each group, and the behavioral biases that relate to individuals’ selection of particular investments within each group. Research indicates that actively managed mutual funds and hedge funds underperform passive investments. Pension funds generate alpha of roughly zero on a risk-adjusted basis. The fees involved in investing in such funds exacerbate the observed underperformance in mutual funds and hedge funds. Behavioral biases provide one perspective on sources of underperformance. Further, individuals exhibit a wide range of behavioral biases that may lead to suboptimal asset allocation, including the selection of mutual funds, ETFs, and hedge funds.

Résumé :
Process and Reality ends with a warning: ‘[t]he chief danger to philosophy is narrowness in the selection of evidence’ (PR, 337). Although this danger of narrowness might emerge from the ‘idiosyncrasies and timidities of particular authors, of particular social groups, of particular schools of thought, of particular epochs in the history of civilization’ (PR, 337), we should not be mistaken: it occurs within philosophy, in its activity, its method. And the fact that this issue arises at the end of Process and Reality reveals the ambition that has accompanied its composition: Whitehead has resisted this danger through the form and ambition of his speculative construction. The temptation of a narrowness in selection attempts to expel speculative philosophy at the same time as it haunts each part of its system.

Sanders, Donald B. Clinical aspects of neuromuscular junction disorders. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199688395.003.0023.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Disorders that primarily impair neuromuscular transmission (NMT) produce weakness that characteristically affects certain muscle groups and varies with activity. Acquired, autoimmune myasthenia gravis (MG) is the most common of these disorders. Much less common are genetic abnormalities of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the Lambert–Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), and toxic effects of various biological and chemical agents. The diagnosis of MG or LEMS is suspected from the history and clinical findings, and is confirmed in most patients by the presence of specific auto-antibodies. The precise diagnosis of most genetic myasthenic syndromes may require sophisticated DNA analysis. Impaired NMT can be confirmed in all of these conditions by repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) testing and measuring the neuromuscular jitter. Treatment of MG requires selecting among several therapeutic options, taking into consideration the clinical characteristics of the individual patient. Treatment of LEMS and genetic myasthenic syndromes is more limited.

Poets, Desirée, et Max O. Stephenson Jr. Maré from the Inside : Art, Culture and Politics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sous la direction de Nicholas Barnes. Virginia Tech Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21061/mare.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Complexo da Maré is a group of 16 contiguous favelas and housing projects in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. Home to an estimated 140,000 individuals, Maré is Brazil's largest agglomeration of favelas. Often depicted in a negative light, these favelas are in fact vibrant and diverse communities, as revealed in this remarkable book. Maré from the Inside: Art, Culture and Politics in Rio de Janeiro, BrazilMaré Brazil is a companion to the exhibition of the same name (Portuguese: Maré de DentroDentro), which was developed by an international team of Brazilian and US academics, activists and artists. The exhibition documents the lives of residents of Complexo da Maré through family portraits, street photographs, documentary films and written works. Featured in this book is a selection of the exhibition's photographs by Italian photojournalist Antonello Veneri, who worked closely with Maré resident and activist Henrique Gomes over the period from 2013 to 2019, during which Rio was home to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. These photographs, simultaneously personal and deeply humane, counter long-standing and powerful stigmatizing narratives, demonstrating instead the diversity and resilience of these communities and exposing the barriers residents confront in their everyday lives. Providing context to the photographs are essays by the exhibition's creators, curators and collaborators, including Maré resident and scholar Andreza Jorge, who asks what it is about the Maré de DentroMaré Dentro exhibition that has made it so compelling for so many people from very different parts of the world. The answer lies in the power of art to make us rethink prevailing social frames and, in turn, embrace fresh political and cultural strategies for integrating previously marginalized communities more fully into political and social life.

Résumé :
This chapter presents a selective overview of the study of identity. Identity is defined broadly as self-understandings, especially those with strong emotional resonances, and often marked with socially constructed raced, gendered, classed, and sexual identity labels. The definition of identity is based on two assumptions: (a) the study of identity is the study of subject formation and (b) identity is about power. The chapter then proceeds to address two aspects of cultural identity as a concept: first, the power that cultural identity has for identity politics, followed by the political dimensions of cultural identity as used by oppressed and minoritized groups in social movements and activism, especially those related to education. The chapter then focuses on the relevance of identity to address difference in education and concludes with asserting the importance of qualitative research in the study of identity.

Mills, Gus, et Margaret Mills. Kalahari Cheetahs. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198712145.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book demonstrates how cheetahs are adapted to arid savannahs like the southern Kalahari, and makes comparisons with other areas, especially the Serengeti. Topics dealt with are: demography and genetic status; feeding ecology, i.e. methods used for studying diet, diets of different demographic groups, individual diet specializations of females, prey selection, the impact of cheetah predation on prey populations, activity regimes and distances travelled per day, hunting behaviour, foraging success and energetics; interspecific competition; spatial ecology; reproductive success and the mating system; and conservation. The major findings show that cheetahs are well adapted to arid ecosystems and are water independent. Cheetah density in the study area was stable at 0.7/100 km2 and the population was genetically diverse. Important prey were steenbok and springbok for females with cubs, gemsbok, and adult ostrich for coalition males, and steenbok, springhares, and hares for single animals. Cheetahs had a density-dependent regulatory effect on steenbok and springbok populations. Females with large cubs had the highest overall food intake. Cheetahs, especially males, were often active at night, and competition with other large carnivores, both by exploitation and interference, was slight. Although predation on small cubs was severe, cub survival to adolescence was six times higher than in the Serengeti. There was no difference in reproductive success between single and coalition males. The conservation priority for cheetahs should be to maintain protected areas over a spectrum of landscapes to allow ecological processes, of which the cheetah is an integral part, to proceed unhindered.

Merino Orozco, Abel, Cristina Di Giusto Valle, Gloria Pérez de Albéniz Garrote et Valeriana Guijo Blanco. Education for fighting against gender discrimination and violence in the immigrant population : a systematic literature review. Universidad de Burgos, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36443/9788418465284.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Migrant women are exposed to double vulnerability, as women and as migrants. This generates a demand for special personalized attention from professionals in the social, health and psychology fields in order to understand their needs. This work aims to understand the complexity of the migratory phenomenon in women in the scientific literature to establish the priority lines of support in university curricula. For this, a systematic review is presented that finally analyzes 63 documents. The study has three search phases in Web of Science and Scopus databases. In the first phase, the terms that are considered are "gender discrimination" AND "Violence" AND "migrant", selecting six items; a second block includes "gender discrimination" AND "migrant”, adding 40 items, and the third block, "gender discrimination" AND "Violence" OR "migrant" AND "education" AND “intervention” AND "women, where 17 new articles are selected. The results show seven emerging categories according to their central theme: legal, social, development & market, health, integration, gender discrimination and intervention. The study presents a discussion for each category, converging on the relevance of the need to raise awareness among the population as a whole. The study attempts to focus interest on priority lines of intervention, among which the following stand out: health care in general, sexual education, the expansion of social networks in the destination, the search for job opportunities, access to technology or the promotion of healthy living and physical activity. This analysis converges on the need for institutions to provide resources to people who suffer gender-based violence of any kind, emphasizing the migrant population, since fewer cases are institutionalized. For this reason, it is also relevant to provide resources to professionals who work with this social group.
