Résumé :
This article examines the origin of ancient catacomb-type graves, about its erroneous use at one time in relation to the graves of the Zamanbaba culture based on the historiography of Soviet archeology. At one time, V.A. Gorodtsov also mistakenly called the undercut graves catacomb, as evidenced by his graphic drawings. Our further studies of real catacomb graves on the territory of the Akhangaron Valley showed what a catacomb-type grave is, its internal structure and the time of its appearance in Central Asia. Unfortunately, Russian colleagues-archaeologists, without delving into the internal structure of catacomb-type graves, repeat the terminological errors of Soviet historiography, as evidenced by the candidate dissertation of Yu.G. Kutimova “The origin and ways of spreading the catacomb burial rite in Central Asia (based on the materials of the burial grounds of the Bronze Age) to which the authors' self-critical approach to determining the time of the appearance of the catacomb device of graves is devoted, also criticizes Russian colleagues in the interpretation and interpretation of archaeological sources of Central Asia in the Soviet conservatism historiography

Résumé :
For the first time, there is presented the comprehensive analysis of the works of Soviet artists of book of the second half of the 1920s, engaged in the book design of the collected works. The flood of the book market with multi-volumes of fiction can be considered a kind of revenge of “big forms”, reaction to the previous stage of book culture, where brochure played the leading role. In the second half of the 1920s, the collected works were most often published in soft-covers. Each volume could be issued as a separate book, strikingly different from the other volumes. This gave the artists a certain freedom of manoeuvre and allowed to break the ingrained stereotypes. There was widely used a spectacular technique: the cover drawing was the same for all volumes, but the colouring of each volume varied. The aim of the article is to expand the established ideas about the book design of the 1920s, to consider and introduce into scientific circulation the forgotten works of known artists. The author carried out the comparative analysis of the multi-volumes issued by the leading publishing houses of those years, using the complex of complementary methods: bibliological, art historical and general historical.Gosizdat was the undisputed leader in the quantitative indicators of publications of the collected works, but its artistic policy in that area was characterized by old-fashioned conservatism tended to minimize the visual elements. The famous publishing house “Academia” in those years published the collected works quite rarely, but enriched the art of book with graphic cycles of such outstanding masters as V.A. Favorsky and N.P. Akimov. The book designers of the publishing house “Zemlya i Fabrika” were particularly successful and consistent in updating the appearance of the collected works: their works had a broad stylistic range and tendency to experiment. Creative search of artists of the 1920s deserves the attention of book historians, designers, illustrators, publishers, because it can give them productive creative ideas.

Résumé :
Robust methods for the predictions of deformations and lifetimes of components operating in the creep range are presented. The ingredients used for this are well-tried numerical techniques, combined with the concepts of continuum damage and so-called reference stresses. The methods described are derived in order to obtain the maximum benefit during the early stages of design where broad assessments of the influences of material choice, loadings, and geometry need to be made quickly and with economical use of computers. It is also intended that the same methods will be of value during operation if estimates of damage or if exercises in life extension are required. Results of the suggested method are amenable to tabular or graphic representation. To illustrate the use of these in parametric studies, three brief case studies are included. These involve a notched rod, a perforated plate, and a pipe for which lifetime estimates based upon failure criteria involving different degrees of conservatism are calculated. In addition, an illustration is given of the use of the charts presented in deciding inspection intervals and lifetime extensions. Finally, a brief excursion into the possibility for using the suggested methods for the mapping of designs within given regional constraints is given.

Résumé :
Abstract. Heritage graphic representation combining building spatial location and urban/land planning supports the decision-making of government agencies and simplifies the development of protection and conservation projects. The evolution of web-based open-source representation systems, able to store 3D graphics information and to make it accessible by web platforms, allows to develop novel heritage catalogues which simplify the exchange of information between administrations and citizens. This work is devoted to the creation of the Digital 3D Inventory of the Aragonese Mudéjar Architectural Heritage, a list of 225 buildings with unique architectural elements which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. We propose a generalized methodology for collecting, store and disseminate friendly 2D geospatial and 3D geometric documentation of the historical buildings, ensuring that valuable information is stored and providing greater graphic and documentary resources than traditional inventories of architectural heritage. The main novelty is creation of a web platform which allows the exploitation of the architectural information through a cartographic webGIS viewer and a 3D environment based on webGL for rendering large point clouds. The proposed web platform enables to delivery 3D content through generic web browsers natively supported by all devices and without installing third-party applications neither downloading massive data files.

Résumé :
Road vibration tests were recently conducted on a series of shelters on dolly sets and on a series of prototype trucks at the U.S. Army Combat Systems Test Activity (USACSTA) at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Data from histogram or amplitude distribution tables were plotted in the normal probability domain to provide a graphic representation. When examining these probability plot data, a divergence of the actual distribution from the normal distribution at the tails was noticed. Of the 104 trials compared, the normal distribution was exceeded by 30 trials at the 90 percent level, 87 trials at the 99 percent level, and 88 trials at the 99.9 percent level. This indicates that the actual measured values at the extreme ends of the distribution (beyond the 90 percent occurrence levels) are larger in magnitude (acceleration) than would be predicted by the assumption of a normal distribution. This same trend was noticed during examination of the kurtosis values for the same data sets. The values generally exceeded a value of three, which is the expected value for a Gaussian distribution. Because the kurtosis is largely affected by data values far from the mean, a correlation between the normalized 99.9 percent values and the normalized kurtosis values was tried. A linear regression line was fit through the data, which produced a correlation of approximately 0.82. Although no formal effort has been put forth to catalog kurtosis measurements from military vehicles, it has generally been observed that the kurtosis values obtained from operation over our test courses is greater than three, indicating that the tails of a vibration distribution from operation over severe terrain are further from the mean (larger amplitude) than would be predicted from a normal distribution. If the kurtosis of the laboratory test distribution is less than that of the field distribution, the extreme values seen in the field environment will not be duplicated in the lab. The addition of conservatism during the schedule development process should be enough to overcome this difference; however, dome effort should be made to develop a "bi-domain" (frequency and time domain amplitude) control system so that the amplitude distribution of the lab test will more closely match that of the field data from which the schedule was derived.

Résumé :
Graphic statics is undergoing a renaissance, with computerized visual representation becoming both easier and more spectacular as time passes. While methods of the past are revived, little emphasis has been placed on studying the mathematics behind these methods. Due to the considerable advances of our mathematical understanding since the birth of graphic statics, we can learn a lot by examining these old methods from a more modern viewpoint. As such, this work shows the mathematical fabric joining different aspects of graphic statics, like dualities, reciprocal diagrams, and discontinuous stress functions. This is done by introducing a new, three dimensional force diagram (containing the old two dimensional force diagram) depicting the three dimensional equilibrium of planar force systems. A corresponding three dimensional “form diagram” (dual diagram) is introduced, in which forces are treated as linear functionals (dual vectors). It is shown that the polyhedral stress function introduced by Maxwell is in fact a linear combination of these functionals; and the projective dualities connecting these three dimensional diagrams are also explained.

Résumé :
Introduction. At the end of the 20th century in the arsenal of traditional economic theory, there were not enough means by which it was possible to explain the not always rational behavior of economic subjects, which prompted the emergence of the concept of behavioral finance as a new direction of financial education. The subject of research of this concept was primarily the impact of emotional, cultural, psychological, social and other factors on the making of financial decisions by household members. Therefore, the use of the findings of the concept of behavioral finance in modern scientific research will provide an opportunity to justify, and therefore to a certain extent influence the irrational behavior of domestic households, to forecast and model their financial decision-making strategies, as well as to increase the level of financial literacy of Ukrainians. The purpose of the scientific research is to analyze the pragmatics of the formation and implementation of the financial behavior of Ukrainian households in the context of the development of the theory of behavioral finance and to highlight modern trends and current models of such behavior in the conditions of a full-scale war in Ukraine. Research methods: analysis and synthesis, system approach, statistical observation, comparative and logical-structural analysis, graphic interpretation of data, generalization. The main results of the study. It is emphasized that the behavioral model of financial decision-making is based on the main behavioral theories ("theory of prospects", "theory of investor behavior", "theory of noise trading", "theory of the efficiency of trader operations") and effects ("loss aversion effect", "status-quo effect ", "ownership effect", "ostrich effect", "certainty effect", "trap effect", "conservatism effect", "competence effect"). The factors, types and main models of financial behavior of households are singled out and the impact of financial literacy on their formation and implementation is substantiated. The consumer, saving and charitable components of the financial behavior of domestic households were analyzed and the current trends in their formation and implementation in the conditions of a full-scale war in Ukraine were investigated. Considerable attention is paid to the pragmatics of the formation of consumer and financial patriotism of Ukrainians and the specifics of using such a new instrument of citizens' savings as investing in military bonds. Conclusions. The article characterizes the main theories of behavioral finance, elucidates the essence of household financial behavior, defines its most common types, models and factors. Modern trends in the financial behavior of Ukrainian households are identified and analyzed through the prism of the concept of behavioral finance.

Résumé :
Representational flexibility is usually assessed in the graphic domain by whether children can innovate canonical drawings. According to the Karmiloff-Smith’s RR Model (RRM 1990), flexibility is acquired with a marked discontinuity at 8-9 years, when routine drawings are overcome once and for all. RRM, though, is inherently recursive, implying that innovation entertains a continuous trade-off with graphic conservatism along development. In this regard, a less recent model by van Sommers (1984) suggests that pictorial conservatism coexist with flexibility, even in adulthood, and that continuity models fit better flexibility development. This study aims at comparing the two models and their ability to predict the relationship between conservatism and flexibility during development. 75 children (5, 7, 9, 11 year-olds) and 20 adults were asked to draw two similar and two different houses (administration order balanced across the sample). Drawings were coded with a 5 point scale for 6 aspects (e.g. house’s structure and details). Results show that linear trends fit flexibility development in all aspects. Adults draw canonical houses more than older children, although score highly in the differentiation task. Results suggest that flexibility coexist with some conservatism even in adults, lending support to van Sommers’s model, in these regards.

Résumé :
The emerging general purpose graphics processing units (GPGPU) computing has tremendously speeded up a great variety of commercial and scientific applications. The GPUs have become prevalent accelerators in current high performance clusters. Though the computational capacity per Watt of the GPUs is much higher than that of the CPUs, the hybrid GPU clusters still consume enormous power. To conserve energy on this kind of clusters is of critical significance. In this thesis, we seek energy conservative computing on the GPU accelerated servers. We introduce our studies as follows. First, we dissect the GPU memory hierarchy due to the fact that most of the GPU applications are suffering from the GPU memory bottleneck. We find that the conventional CPU cache models cannot be applied on the modern GPU caches, and the microbenchmarks to study the conventional CPU cache become invalid for the GPU. We propose the GPU-specified microbenchmarks to examine the GPU memory structures and properties. Our benchmark results verify that the design goal of the GPU has transformed from pure computation performance to better energy efficiency. Second, we investigate the impact of dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), a successful energy management technique for CPUs, on the GPU platforms. Our experimental results suggest that GPU DVFS is still promising in conserving energy, but the patterns to save energy strongly differ from those of the CPU. Besides, the effect of GPU DVFS depends on the individual application characteristics. Third, we derive the GPU DVFS power and performance models from our experimental results, based on which we find the optimal GPU voltage and frequency setting to minimize the energy consumption of a single GPU task. We then study the problem of scheduling multiple tasks on a hybrid CPU-GPU cluster to minimize the total energy consumption by GPU DVFS. We design an effective offline scheduling algorithm which can reduce the energy consumption significantly. At last, we combine the GPU DVFS and dynamic resource sleep (DRS), another energy management technique, to further conserve the energy, for the online task scheduling on hybrid clusters. Though the idle energy consumption increases significantly compared to the offline problem, our online scheduling algorithm still achieves more than 30% of energy conservation with appropriate runtime GPU DVFS readjustments.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Linear Gaussian systems often exhibit sparse structures. For systems which grow as a function of time, marginalisation of past states will eventually introduce extra non-zero elements into the information matrix of the Gaussian distribution. These extra non-zeros can lead to dense problems as these systems progress through time. This thesis proposes a method that can delete elements of the information matrix while maintaining guarantees about the conservativeness of the resulting estimate with a computational complexity that is a function of the connectivity of the graph rather than the problem dimension. This sparsification can be performed iteratively and minimises the Kullback Leibler Divergence (KLD) between the original and approximate distributions. This new technique is called Conservative Sparsification (CS). For large sparse graphs employing a Junction Tree (JT) for estimation, efficiency is related to the size of the largest clique. Conservative Sparsification can be applied to clique splitting in JTs, enabling approximate and efficient estimation in JTs with the same conservative guarantees as CS for information matrices. In distributed estimation scenarios which use JTs, CS can be performed in parallel and asynchronously on JT cliques. This approach usually results in a larger KLD compared with the optimal CS approach, but an upper bound on this increased divergence can be calculated with information locally available to each clique. This work has applications in large scale distributed linear estimation problems where the size of the problem or communication overheads make optimal linear estimation difficult.

This thesis is divided into two major parts according to the research fields : the energy conservation problems in wireless sensor networks and the scheduling problems in grid computing systems. Chapter 1 introduces the emergence of wireless sensor networks and its characteristics according to which the new problems of wireless sensor networks arise compared with the traditional network and wireless networks. Chapter 2-4 present the problem of energy conservation with coverage. We address an application which monitors a set of targets with coverage. We address an application which monitors a set of targets with known locations by a set of sensor nodes in heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. For further studies, we consider this problem under some specific conditions. We consider the wireless sensor networks satisfying that each node monitors one target or just for connection. Furthermore, we continue this work and defines the working time of a node is exactly d times. In chapter 5, present the efficient data routing problem for mobile tracking wireless sensor networks. Another issue we study in this thesis is about scheduling problems in grid computing systems. In chapter 6, we introduce a new approach that is with respect to job parallelism for computational grid. Chapter 7, tries to give a new grid system model to guarantee the quality of a schedule. This chapter is supposed to solve the problem of how to allocate the resources optimally and adaptively in the dynamic, scalable and distribute-controlled grid environment

Résumé :
To address the ever-increasing demand for computing capacities, more and more heterogeneous systems have been designed to use both general-purpose and special-purpose processors. The huge energy consumption of them raises new environmental concerns and challenges. Besides performance, energy efficiency is another key factor to be considered by system designers and consumers. In particular, contemporary graphics processing units (GPUs) support dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) to balance computational performance and energy consumption. However, accurate and straightforward performance and power estimation for a given GPU kernel under different frequency settings is still lacking for real hardware, which is essential to determine the best frequency configuration for energy saving. In this thesis, we investigate how to improve the energy efficiency of GPU systems by accurately modeling the effects of GPU DVFS on the target GPU kernel. We also propose efficient algorithms to solve the communication contention problem in scheduling multiple distributed deep learning (DDL) jobs on GPU clusters. We introduce our studies as follows. First, we present a benchmark suite EPPMiner for evaluating the performance, power, and energy of different heterogeneous systems. EPPMiner consists of 16 benchmark programs that cover a broad range of application domains, and it shows a great variety in the intensity of utilizing the processors. We have implemented a prototype of EPPMiner that supports OpenMP, CUDA, and OpenCL, and demonstrated its usage by three showcases. The showcases justify that GPUs provide much better energy efficiency than other types of computing systems, and especially illustrate the effectiveness of GPU Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) on the energy efficiency of GPU applications. Second, we reveal a fine-grained analytical model to estimate the execution time of GPU kernels with both core and memory frequency scaling. Compared to the cycle-level simulators, which are too slow to apply on real hardware, our model only needs one-off micro-benchmarks to extract a set of hardware parameters and kernel performance counters without any source code analysis. Our experimental results show that the proposed performance model can capture the kernel performance scaling behaviors under different frequency settings and achieve decent accuracy. Third, we design a cross-benchmarking suite, which simulates kernels with a wide range of instruction distributions. The synthetic kernels generated by this suite can be used for model pre- training or as supplementary training samples. We then build machine learning models to predict the execution time and runtime power of a GPU kernel under different voltage and frequency settings. Validated on three modern GPUs with a wide frequency scaling range, by using a collection of 24 real application kernels, the model trained only with our cross-benchmarking suite is able to achieve considerably accurate results. At last, we establish a new DDL job scheduling framework which organizes DDL jobs as Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) and considers communication contention between nodes. We then propose an efficient job placement algorithm, Least-Workload-First- (LWF-), to balance the GPU utilization and consolidate the allocated GPUs for each job. When scheduling the communication tasks, we propose Ada-SRSF for the DDL job scheduling problem to address the communication contention issue. Our simulation results show that LWF- achieves up to 1.59x improvement over the classical first-fit algorithms. More importantly, Ada-SRSF reduces the average job completion time by up to 36.7%, as compared to the solutions of either avoiding all the communication contention or accepting all of it

Résumé :
Biodiversity conservation requires a framework for prioritising limited resources to the many endangered species. One such framework that has seen much attention and is considered extensively in this thesis, is the Noah's Ark Problem (NAP). The NAP combines a biodiversity measure (Phylogenetic Diversity; PD) with species survival probabilities and conservation costs. The aim of the NAP is to allocate the limited conservation resources such that the future expected PD is maximised. Obtaining optimal solutions to the NAP is a computationally complex problem to which several efficient algorithms are provided here. An extension to the NAP is also developed which allows uncertainty about the survival probability estimates to be included. Using this extension we show that the NAP is robust to uncertainty in these parameters and that even very poor estimates are beneficial. To justify using or promoting PD, it must produce a significant increase in the amount of biodiversity that is preserved. We show that the increase attainable from the NAP is typically around 20% but may be as high as 150%. An alternative approach to PD and the NAP is to prioritise species using simple species specific indices. The benefit of these indices is that they are easy to calculate, explain and integrate into existing management frameworks. Here we investigate the use of such indices and show that they provide between 60% and 80% of the gains obtainable using PD. To explore the expected behaviours of conservation methods (such as the NAP) a distribution of phylogenetics trees is required. Evolutionary models describe the diversification process by which a single species gives rise to multiple species. Such models induce a probability distribution on trees and can therefore be used to investigate the expected behaviour of conservation methods. Even simple and widely used models, such as the Yule model, remain poorly understood. In this thesis we present some new analytic results and methods for sampling trees from a broad range of evolutionary models. Lastly we introduce a new model that provides a simple biological explanation for a long standing discrepancy between models and trees derived from real data -- the tree balance distribution.

Résumé :
This research project operates from the perspective of the author as graphic design practitioner and considers how practice-based visual methods may be used to form a novel system of analysis in graphic design research. The focus of this research is the Conservative Party poster, produced for the British General Elections held between 1979 and 2010. With practice at the core of the research methodology, visual design methods have been configured and applied to a range of material in order to generate insights about how visual language is used in a variety of contexts. The research includes a review of the graphic communication of the British political poster, existing visual methods, and practice-based research within the field of graphic design. From there, a system of practice-based methods was devised, and then applied to the Conservative Party posters. The design system employs methods that disassemble each poster into its individual components (type, image, hierarchy, colour and negative space), mapping each using simple visual techniques, before reassembling these components to identify trends and insights in relation to various political themes. In order to test this design system, these methods were applied to a very different type of visual communication material produced for Sense, a charitable organisation that advocates for the rights of deaf-blind people. This proved valuable to the study, and demonstrated how this system could function in a very different context. The output of this study proposes potential visual devices for aiding visually impaired readers engage with photographic imagery. The findings and visual outputs of this investigation are described in this thesis, and are also housed in a series of three books that form the practice component of this research project. This thesis aims to highlight the value of practice-based methods within graphic design research, and specifically, methods more exclusively available to the graphic design practitioner. Practice is of central importance to this research project, forming the core of the methodology, as well as the outputs produced in response to the research findings. Through establishing the visual characteristics of the Conservative Party poster (1979-2010), this research seeks to demonstrate how a novel system of practice-based methods might help further an understanding of visual communication design.

Résumé :
AbstractTranscriptional regulatory networks specify context-specific patterns of genes and play a central role in how species evolve and adapt. Inferring genome-scale regulatory networks in non-model species is the first step for examining patterns of conservation and divergence of regulatory networks. Transcriptomic data obtained under varying environmental stimuli in multiple species are becoming increasingly available, which can be used to infer regulatory networks. However, inference and analysis of multiple gene regulatory networks in a phylogenetic setting remains challenging. We developed an algorithm, Multi-species Regulatory neTwork LEarning (MRTLE), to facilitate such studies of regulatory network evolution. MRTLE is a probabilistic graphical model-based algorithm that uses phylogenetic structure, transcriptomic data for multiple species, and sequence-specific motifs in each species to simultaneously infer genome-scale regulatory networks across multiple species. We applied MRTLE to study regulatory network evolution across six ascomycete yeasts using transcriptomic measurements collected across different stress conditions. MRTLE networks recapitulated experimentally derived interactions in the model organism S. cerevisiae as well as non-model species, and it was more beneficial for network inference than methods that do not use phylogenetic information. We examined the regulatory networks across species and found that regulators associated with significant expression and network changes are involved in stress-related processes. MTRLE and its associated downstream analysis provide a scalable and principled framework to examine evolutionary dynamics of transcriptional regulatory networks across multiple species in a large phylogeny.

Résumé :
The chapter, starting from the analysis of the characteristics of heritage tourism, in particular in Italy, and the expectations of cultural consumers, focuses on the importance of a visual identity for the cultural heritage. For an effective integration of tourism and culture, a careful planning is required in the promotion of cultural assets, activities, and traditions. The role of communication should be to propose a new interpretation and representation of the territory, having as a main theme the role of culture. In this sense, it may be useful to identify a location through a brand, which materializes the characteristics of a system of culture and values of the territory, selecting structural elements that allow its identification and synthesizing them in a single name or symbol. Finally, some experiences of visual communication for cultural heritage realized in the academic field are presented here.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
When welding onto an in-service pipeline to repair a damaged section of pipe or to install a branch connection (i.e., hot-tapping) there are two main concerns; burnthrough and hydrogen cracking. The risk of burnthrough is typically evaluated by predicting the inside surface temperature of the pipeline using industry trusted computer models (e.g., Battelle or PRCI models). The objective of this project was to evaluate alternatives to the burnthrough prediction approach currently used by the Battelle and PRCI models and to identify and validate an improved approach. An improved approach for burnthrough prediction was developed and based on two-dimensional (2-D) thermo-mechanical FEA model which uses ABAQUS and EWI-developed proprietary user subroutines (46345 model). The easy-to-use graphic user interface (GUI) is based on Microsoft Excel and allows the user to run the numerical analysis by a few mouse-button clicks. The 46345 model was based on circumferential and bead-on-pipe welds which simulate the first layer of a temper bead in-service welding procedure or a weld metal deposition repair. The effect of various parameters such as pressure, wall thickness, pipe diameter, and welding direction were quantitatively studied using the 46345 model and compared to cross sections of experimental welds made under the same condition. The 46345 model circumferential weld case predictions were in good agreement with experimental weld cross sections and were able to reduce the over-conservatism assumed with the PRCI model. The 46345 model longitudinal weld case predictions were in less-than-adequate agreement with the experimental weld cross sections and were not able to reduce the over-conservatism assumed with the PRCI model. It is important to note that even though the 46345 model does predict the inside surface temperature during the analysis that the temperature is not used in determining the burnthrough risk. The burnthrough risk is solely based on the magnitude of the radial displacement which may be a better measure of burnthrough risk than the inside surface temperature.

Résumé :
Abstract The bond graph can be used to simulate and model conservation processes in different energy domains. In this paper, based on bond graph, the pressurizer was modeled and diagnosed at full power. Two parameters of pressure and mass flow were selected. Firstly, the bond graph of pressurizer was established. The pressurizer was divided into three zones: the fluctuating zone, the saturated liquid zone and the gaseous zone. The conservation equations of mass and energy were given respectively for these three regions. Secondly, the conservation equations of mass and energy were combined with the conservation of volume, and the model was constructed according to the combination rules. Then, according to the established bond graph model, the time causality diagram was established to determine the influence relationship between the coefficients and listed the fault characteristic matrix. Meanwhile, the reasoning structure between the coefficient was realized by the expert system G2. Finally, the fault data simulated by simulator was imported into the bond graph model. The failure of the safety valve, the spray valve and the immersion type heater were introduced to verify the modeling and diagnosis effect. It concludes that the diagnosis effect is consistent with the imported fault. Compared with the data-driven method, the bond graph method is more reliable, and compared with the expert knowledge method, the bond graph method can diagnose unknown faults and has a wide range of applications. In addition, a new method for nuclear power plant simulation modeling was provided. This was a new attempt to model bond graphs outside the research of mechanic, electronic and hydraulic.

Résumé :
A modification of the discontinuous shapeless particle method for two-dimensional problems of gas dynamics is studied. In the previous version of the method, the shape of the particles conditioned their interaction, which determined the quality of the final result. In order to get rid of the constant attachment to the shape and size of particles, along with the heights of particles (solution of the differential problem) and their positions in space, another third invariant is introduced. Namely, the area of the trapezium, the bases of which are the heights of the particles, and the segment connecting their centers is the lateral side. This invariant can be interpreted as a trace of the conservation of mass in the space between two particles whose masses also do not change (exact conservatism is a fundamental feature of particle methods). Numerical solutions obtained with the particle method and numerical solutions obtained with the OpenFOAM software are compared with the analytical solution in the L2 norm, using the example of the problem of a supersonic flow around a wedge, resulting in the formation of an oblique shock wave. The presented visualization of the results gives a clear picture of the features of the discontinuous particle method for problems whose solution has large gradients. This work is part of the research on the comparative verification of numerical methods in the space of defining parameters.

Résumé :
Models capturing parameterized random walks on graphs have been widely adopted in wildlife conservation to study species dispersal as a function of landscape features. Learning the probabilistic model empowers ecologists to understand animal responses to conservation strategies. By exploiting the connection between random walks and simple electric networks, we show that learning a random walk model can be reduced to finding the optimal graph Laplacian for a circuit. We propose a moment matching strategy that correlates the model’s hitting and commuting times with those observed empirically. To find the best Laplacian, we propose a neural network capable of back-propagating gradients through the matrix inverse in an end-to-end fashion. We developed a scalable method called CGInv which back-propagates the gradients through a neural network encoding each layer as a conjugate gradient iteration. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we apply our computational framework to applications in landscape connectivity modeling. Our experiments successfully demonstrate that our framework effectively and efficiently recovers the ground-truth configurations.

Résumé :
Abstract The well known column buckling formulas of Euler and these of Engesser / Haringx / Timoshenko (which correct for transverse shear) were derived for isotropic materials, and are routinely used in composite structural applications. The accuracy of these formulas, when orthotropic composite material and moderate thickness are involved, is investigated in the present study by comparing the critical loads from these formulas with the predictions of a three-dimensional orthotropic elasticity solution. The column is assumed to be in the form of a hollow circular cylinder and the Euler or Timoshenko loads are based on the axial modulus. As an example, the cases of an orthotropic material with stiffness constants typical of glass/epoxy or graphite/epoxy and the reinforcing direction along the periphery or along the cylinder axis are considered. First, it is found that the elasticity approach predicts in all cases a lower than the Euler value critical load. Moreover, the degree of non-conservatism of the Euler formula is strongly dependent on the reinforcing direction; the axially reinforced columns show the highest deviation from the elasticity value. Second, the Engesser or first Timoshenko shear correction formula is conservative in all cases examined, i.e. it predicts a lower critical load than the elasticity solution. The Haringx or second Timoshenko shear correction formula is in most cases (but not always) conservative. However, in all cases considered, the second estimate is always closer to the elasticity solution than the first one. For the isotropic case both Timoshenko formulas are conservative estimates.

Résumé :
Rendering of large scenes in external memory is one of the most important problems of computer graphics, which is used in such areas as CAD/CAM/CAE, geoinformatics, project management, scientific visualization, virtual and augmented reality, computer games and animation. Unlike static scenes, for which a number of effective approaches have been proposed, in particular, levels of detail (LOD), rendering of large dynamic scenes with a given level of the tolerance and trustworthiness remains a big challenge. This paper discusses and investigates the possibility of using the previously proposed method of hierarchical dynamic levels of detail (HDLOD) for conservative rendering of dynamic scenes with a deterministic nature of events in external memory. The carried out series of computational experiments prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the method for real industrial scenes when employed in combination with memory management techniques.

Dans 2020 13th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2020-9483.

Résumé :
Abstract The thermal radiation from a jet fire is the dominant hazard resulting from accidental natural gas releases from onshore pipelines or facilities. To assess the consequences to both individuals and equipment, we require models to estimate the incident radiation from the jet fire to the surroundings. Simpler models with shorter implementation and run times are more viable for use in a full probabilistic risk assessment, in which the number of scenarios assessed could number in the millions. However, the level of accuracy within these models must be considered to ensure a reasonably conservative estimate is produced. A review and comparison of semi-empirical models from literature was performed and used to develop a decision tree to recommend the most computationally efficient jet fire modelling approaches based on the release scenario, while maintaining reasonable conservatism. Options for both vertical and non-vertical releases are presented, as well as corrections for lift-off, wind, and buoyancy. Additionally, an efficient algorithm from the area of computer graphics was adapted and applied to a weighted multiple point source jet fire model to account for the reduction in incident radiation to a receptor due to topography or structures partially obstructing the view of the jet fire.

Résumé :
Graphic survey and three-dimensional modelling of the Negro Tower or Arráez, post-coastal tower of the sixteenth century in El Algar (Region of Murcia, Spain)Post-coastal towers or rural fortress towers, built in the sixteenth century on the Mediterranean coast, had the mission of protecting the population and enhancing the repopulation of these areas, heavily punished by incursions by berber pirates. The Negro Tower or Arráez Tower, in El Algar-Cartagena (Region of Murcia, Spain), is one of those post-coastal lookout towers and was built in 1585. It is shaped like a truncated pyramid, square plan and a height of about 14,00 m. Originally, it had three floors and a terrace. Despite its degree of protection (it is a monument), its current state of conservation is semi-ruined. It has no cover, the vault of the first floor has collapsed and presents cracks that threaten its stability. Therefore, a research project has been developed that has included, among other aspects, the graphic survey with two complementary techniques: digital photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning. The result is an exhaustive graphic documentation that allows understanding the construction and allows the consolidation and volumetric recomposition of the tower. With this work, it is intended to contribute to the conservation and recovery of the heritage value of the Tower, as well as the integration of the historical monument in its natural and landscape environment.
