Résumé :

In this paper, we discuss how the «letrado» type, conceived as someone who has had access to a higher level of education, is handled by Gomes Eanes de Zurara in his chronicles, written in Portugal in the third quarter of the fifteenth century. We analyze the motives that lead the «letrados» to be praised or vituperated by Zurara. Finally, based on the Zurarian historiographic writing, we discuss the limits of assigning the term «letrado» to the chronicler himself.

Trabalho de análise dos métodos cronísticos de escritores que produziram obras nos séculos XIV e XV e viveram nos reinos de Castela e Portugal. Pero Lopez de Ayala, Fernán Perez de Guzman, Fernão Lopes, Gomes Eanes de Zurara e Rui de Pina foram cronistas a serviço de seus reis. Escreveram histórias inseridas em contexto de propaganda régia com vistas à legitimação e afirmação dinásticas, como a dinastia Trastâmara em Castela e a dinastia de Avisem Portugal. Foramanalisados os métodos e concepções que estes escritores possuíam do fazer cronístico paralelamente aos interesses decorridos dos financiadores.

Résumé :

Neste artigo, discute-se como a damnatio memoriae imposta por D. Afonso V ao infante D. Pedro no contexto da Batalha de Alfarrobeira, em 1449, bem como a revogação de tal pena, em 1455, refletem-se nas crônicas de Gomes Eanes de Zurara. Demonstra-se que, no período em que vigorou a citada damnatio memoriae, Zurara escreveu, a mando do rei, suas duas primeiras obras: a Crónica da Tomada de Ceuta e a Crónica de Guiné, motivo pelo qual o infante D. Pedro, enquanto personagem, quando não é esquecido, é lembrado desfavoravelmente pelo cronista. Contudo, observa-se uma redenção mnemônica do infante D. Pedro nas duas últimas crônicas zurarianas, a saber, a Crónica do Conde D. Pedro de Meneses e a Crónica do Conde D. Duarte de Meneses, compostas após a reabilitação oficial da memória do ex-regente por parte do monarca.

A História é um campo que se revitaliza na mesma direção para o qual o olhar do historiador se volta, ou seja, para a mudança. O processo de revitalização se funda no debate e na deslocação das ideias gerais. Este artigo marca uma posição sobre o conceito de Reconquista em três direções específicas: na discussão historiográfica; no recurso às crônicas tardo-medievais portuguesa e castelhana, a saber as escritas por Gomes Eanes de Zurara e a Crónica de D. Juan II, e, por fim, na mediação do debate para o estudo da História Medieval no ambiente da escola, a fim de fazer convergir a análise e o recurso aos documentos de forma significativa para a construção do conhecimento histórico.

Gomes Eanes de Zurara, segundo cronista-mor de Portugal, escreveu enquanto vigorava a longa duração da instituição retórica. Deste modo, as narrativas históricas por ele compostas eram retoricamente regradas, o que pode ser observado, por exemplo, nos usos que o cronista faz de diversos ornamentos de palavras e de pensamentos com vistas a conferir dignidade à sua elocução. Neste artigo analisamos especificamente como a similitude, um dos diversos ornamentos de sentenças prescritos por tratados de arte retórica que tinham circularidade em Portugal no século XV, é utilizada por Zurara para estabelecer paralelos entre ofícios típicos da gente miúda, geralmente tida por “baixa” e “vil”, e atividades então consideradas elevadas e honradas, características de nobres e prelados. O engenho do cronista está justamente em encontrar semelhanças em coisas díspares, como é próprio da similitude.

O presente artigo pretende se deter sobre a representação dos modos de condução da guerra da expansão imperial portuguesa quinhentista contida nas narrativas cronisticas que tratam da presença militar lusitana na América portuguesa. Pleiteia-se que os métodos de combate descritos nos textos sugerem que a revolução nos assuntos militares, termo que designa na bibliografia especializada o processo de modernização dos exércitos europeus modernos, não fincou raízes em solo lusitano quatrocentista e quinhentista. Os guerreiros e conquistadores que se assenhorearam de uma vasta porção do globo utilizaram predominantemente de táticas de incursão de infantaria desordenada ao estilo de razias. O estudo se baseou em um corpus constituído por cronistas quatrocentistas e quinhentistas: Gomes Eanes de Zurara; Rui de Pina; João de Barros; Lopes de Castanheda; Gaspar Correia; Gabriel Soares de Souza e Frei Vicente de Salvador.

Neste artigo fazemos um levantamento dos nomes, apelidos e alcunhas de homens da gente miúda registrados por Fernão Lopes e por Gomes Eanes de Zurara em suas crônicas escritas no século XV a serviço dos reis de Portugal. Assinalamos a excepcionalidade do registro de nomes e de feitos de membros das camadas baixas do povo em narrativas históricas que tinham por protagonistas e por público primeiro especialmente os nobres, muitos dos quais murmuravam contra os cronistas justamente por terem os seus nomes omitidos, ou esquecidos, da história oficial do reino. Uma vez levantado o rol de apelativos de personagens da gente miúda procedemos a uma análise onomástica que nos permitiu concluir que em parte considerável dos antropônimos preservados por Lopes e por Zurara é reconhecível a baixa condição social das personae, seja pela clássica formação do antropônimo a partir de patronímicos, costume observado especialmente entre famílias vilãs no período abordado, seja pela utilização de apelidos que remetem a ofícios típicos da gente miúda. Este artigo analisou parte da documentação cronística produzida em Portugal entre os anos de 1430 e 1460. Naquele contexto, observou-se em Fernão Lopes e Gomes Eanes de Zurara uma organização cronológica para escrita, indo das pessoas mais antigas para as mais recentes, criando um contraste de qualidades que valorizava os últimos. Na crônica que Zurara conta os acontecimentos em Ceuta sob seu primeiro capitão português, o conde Dom Pedro de Meneses, reparou-se na inserção do filho deste na segunda parte do segundo livro. Este trabalho, assim, tentou identificar os possíveis motivos para tal entrada, uma vez que ela destoa consideravelmente do conjunto da crônica. Valeu-se da noção de genealogia política, onde a escrita do passado criava uma ligação simbólica e hierárquica com os interessados na construção do relato, recuperando a origem familiar e política. Desta forma, buscou-se entender os dispositivos de escrita sob contexto de questionamento das prerrogativas nobiliárquicas, sendo a crônica um instrumento de legitimação.

Résumé :

O segundo cronista e guarda-mor da Torre do Tombo, Gomes Eanes de Zurara, notabilizou-se pela produção de crônicas acerca da conquista e manutenção da praça de Ceuta no século XV. Com a finalidade de explorar as impressões desse cronista, o presente trabalho abordará como Zurara fez um uso edificante de duas de suas fontes: o discurso do conde D. Pedro de Meneses e um reportatio do sermão do fr. João Xira. Mais precisamente, o alvo deste estudo é examinar em que medida Zurara reproduziu as palavras dessas célebres figuras na expectativa de legitimar a incursão militar da Coroa no norte da África. Com ênfase na descrição do referido oficial da Torre do Tombo, o alvo consistirá em analisar a função da prédica de um religioso e de um cavaleiro para a exortação dos portugueses enviados a essa região em um período de fortalecimento das bases políticas e religiosas de Portugal.

Certos antílopes norte-africanos foram chamados oryx por autores gregos e romanos. Os autores árabes conheciam-nos como Lamt (ou lamta, elamt, lant, dant) e usavam sua pele na confecção de escudos (daraqqa-lamṭiyya). Com a invasão muçulmana da Península Ibérica, daraqqa-lamṭiyya tranformou-se em adarga-danta e sob esta forma foi citada por numerosos autores espanhóis e portugueses. Consequentemente, os Oryx africanos foram chamados anta por Gomes Eanes de Zurara (1453) e danta por um autor anônimo (MS Valentim Fernandes, 1507) e Duarte Lopes (in Pigafetta & Lopes, 1589). Antonio Pigafetta (in Anôn., ca. 1526) referiu-se, sob o nome anta, ao estranho animal que os índios de língua Tupi do Brasil denominavam tapir. Tapir e anta (com muitas variantes e com a adição de vários qualificativos) foram usados por autores subsequentes. Finalmente, no Brasil, o uso impróprio de anta para designar as espécies de Tapirus suplantou a de tapir. Uma confusão adicional foi acrescentada por alguns autores, que confundiram as antas sul-americanas com o alce do Velho Mundo, chamando as primeiras de grã-bestas (e variantes).

No artigo que se segue busco traçar um breve itinerário dos discursos escravistas que fundamentaram e proporcionaram as condições para a manutenção ideológica e a reprodução do escravismo atlântico a partir do século 16. Partindo da narrativa heróica de Gomes Eannes Zurara, em sua Crônica dos feitos de Guiné, ressalto alguns dos argumentos utilizados para adaptar ao mundo cristão e moderno uma prática que, embora fosse narrada como uma continuação da antiga instituição romana necessitou ser reconfigurada para poder ser legitimada em um novo contexto, e partir de uma nova configuração econômica e espacial.

This article compared the effectiveness of punitive strategies such as suspension and expulsion to mitigate behaviour disorders in Kenyan schools. Behaviour disorders witnessed in Kenyan schools include externalising and internalising behaviour disorders. Externalising behaviour disorders include bullying, aggression, disruption, acting out, fighting, violence, destruction of property, cheating, and stealing among others. Internalising behaviour disorders include depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, immaturity, negative talk, substance abuse, loneliness or guilt, sadness, suicidal feelings, nervousness, and irritability among others. Suspension and expulsion are the zero tolerance (ZT) strategies used in our institutions to curb behaviour disorders. Zero tolerance measures are guidelines for providing the harshest retribution possible to every student who goes against the laid down regulations. Corporal punishment is also used as a punitive measure in our institutions despite its prohibition in the Children’s Act 2001. Corporal punishment was recognised to offer minor data on appropriate action to take but only educate the person on the inappropriate behaviours to avoid. This article found that solitary disciplinary practices like suspension and expulsion may further prohibit poor academic performance and dropout. The article further found out the importance of training the heads of learning institutions on how to manage inappropriate behaviour disorders and the incorporation of other strategies such as guidance and counselling and the involvement of parents. Thus, it encourages Kenyan institutions to adopt School-Wide Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS), which is a non-condoning approach used in controlling school violence and misbehaviour of students that have shown positive results in an unsystematically controlled trial research to control school violence and misbehaviour of students. This article also found out the need for a Functional Behavioural Assessment (FBA) before intervening for a behaviour disorder. The aim of an FBA is to collect wide and particular data so as to comprehend the exact purpose of the student’s inappropriate behaviours.

4.0 Revolution eases people to get connected online. It also influences the education development that goes in line with the information and communication technology advancement. One of the most-contributing in education world is online learning. This research aims to (a) describe the online learning strategy concept, (b) describe the technology based recitation model for learners, and (c) analyze the implementation of the online learning with technology based recitation model in NU Nurul Haq Islamic School, Prambatan, Kudus. This research uses a descriptive qualitative model from the interview results held online and face to face. The findings showed that online learning was effective to be implemented in current technologized era. Then, to make online learning running smoothly, there is a need of technology based tasks that could facilitate the online learning promotion by considering social, affective, cognitive, and psychomotor aspect. It is in accordance to technology based recitation model that could foster students’ behaviors to seek and manage their information and communication. Furthermore, it could foster responsibility and discipline of the learners.

Abstract Conventionally, overall gene expressions from microarrays are used to infer gene networks, but it is challenging to account splicing isoforms. High-throughput RNA Sequencing has made splice variant profiling practical. However, its true merit in quantifying splicing isoforms and isoform-specific exon expressions is not well explored in inferring gene networks. This study demonstrates SpliceNet, a method to infer isoform-specific co-expression networks from exon-level RNA-Seq data, using large dimensional trace. It goes beyond differentially expressed genes and infers splicing isoform network changes between normal and diseased samples. It eases the sample size bottleneck; evaluations on simulated data and lung cancer-specific ERBB2 and MAPK signaling pathways, with varying number of samples, evince the merit in handling high exon to sample size ratio datasets. Inferred network rewiring of well established Bcl-x and EGFR centered networks from lung adenocarcinoma expression data is in good agreement with literature. Gene level evaluations demonstrate a substantial performance of SpliceNet over canonical correlation analysis, a method that is currently applied to exon level RNA-Seq data. SpliceNet can also be applied to exon array data. SpliceNet is distributed as an R package available at http://www.jjwanglab.org/SpliceNet.

Wireless technologies are being introduced in industrial applications since they provide certain benefits, such as the flexibility to modify the layout of the nodes, improving connectivity with monitoring and decision nodes, adapting to mobile devices and reducing or eliminating cabling. However, companies are still reluctant to use them in time-critical applications, and consequently, more research is needed in order to be massively deployed in industrial environments. This paper goes in this direction by presenting a novel wireless acquisition system aimed at industrial applications. This system embeds a low-cost technology, such as XBee, not frequently considered for deterministic applications, for deploying industrial applications that must fulfill certain QoS requirements. The use of XBee 900 MHz modules allows for the use of the 2.4 GHz band for other purposes, such as connecting to cloud services, without causing interferences with critical applications. The system implements a time-slotted media access (TDMA) approach with a timely transmission scheduling of the messages on top of the XBee 900 MHz technology. The paper discusses the details of the acquisition system, including the topology, the nodes involved, the so-called coordinator node and smart measuring nodes, and the design of the frames. Smart measuring nodes are implemented by an original PCB which were specifically designed and manufactured. This board eases the connection of the sensors to the acquisition system. Experimental tests were carried out to validate the presented wireless acquisition system. Its applicability is shown in an industrial scenario for monitoring the positioning of an aeronautical reconfigurable tooling prototype. Both wired and wireless technologies were used to compare the variables monitored. The results proved that the followed approach may be an alternative for monitoring big machinery in indoor industrial environments, becoming especially suitable for acquiring values from sensors located in mobile parts or difficult-to-reach places.

Résumé :

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a widely known type of software that eases the managerial aspect in enterprises. It increases their efficiency and productivity which helps them to exponentially grow in a short span of time compared to organizations that are not using it. However, as much as productive it is, implementing it does not often succeed. Majority of ERP implementations ends up failing due to different types of factors. Spotting the light on technical aspects showed that several factors contribute to this failure. Starting from pre-implementation phase with Business Process Reengineering (BPR) execution failure, or during the implementation phase due to miscommunication or incapable project members. The research amount in this field, particularly in critical failure factors is not sufficient to learn from and avoid future implementations, hence this topic provides insights about this specific issue. Quantitative method is used to analyse the data collected from a survey questionnaire for those who got involved in ERP or BPR implementations. The research process goes through objectives from problem identification to an in-detail explanation about its causes and effects, to how it is going to be addressed, how the data is going to be collected and analysed, and finally the proposed approach with a technical evaluation for it. The final objective of the research results in developing an approach that minimises the negative contribution of two failure factors, poor BPR and ineffective communication on the mentioned implementations, or prevent them entirely. The reason these two were chosen were due to their high occurrence frequency and lack of research regarding why they are considered failure factors. Concluding the research, the mentioned enhanced approach is being evaluated showing its potential to solve these factors, as they are relying on each other, with additional suggestions to further improve the approach in future work.

Implementation of state problems in the field of public health protection is impossible without the participation of phar- maceutical specialists, which requires a comprehensive assessment of existing practices in the field of health and social work from the consumers’ view. The purpose of the research is to study the expectations, preferences and consumers satisfaction with the level of participation of pharmacists in maintaining and improving the public health. Materials and methods. The assessment of consumer expectations and preferences was based on the analysis of the survey results using standard methods of statistical analysis (two-sample student test, nonparametric Mann-Whitney test with a significance level of p<0.05, Friedman’s rank analysis of variance) in the software products Statistica 10 and Microsoft Excel. Results. Analysis of consumer expectations and their satisfaction regarding the participation of pharmacists in public health has allowed to define the portrait of the most competent and at the same time demanding visitor pharmacies. It’s a woman 36-50 years old with higher education that has got children up to 18 years and/or older relatives (friends), and/or with chronic diseases and receiving multiple medications on a regular basis. With increasing age, the number of chronic diseases and, consequently, the number of necessary medications, consumer expectations are also increase. The public reaction to the participation of pharmacists in public health protection is mostly positive, however the pharmaceutical specialist is more widely perceived in society as an expert on medicines, rather than on healthcare in general. For all consumers of pharmaceutical services, the most significant characteristic is the level of pharmacists’ professional compe- tence. Regular consumers of pharmacy services express a higher willingness to follow the pharmacists’ recommendations to pre- serve and promote health (such as healthy diet, physical activity, solving problems associated with quitting smoking). At the same time, consumers without any health problems are less motivated to receive health-saving recommendations from a pharmacist. Conclusion: The modern society is aware of the significant role of pharmacists in the implementation of health-saving technologies, although the range of their professional tasks rarely goes further than the sphere of medicines supply. This fact requires the phar- macy manager to focus on monitoring the compliance of specialists ‘ competencies with consumer expectations. The greatest interest in receiving health-saving recommendations from pharmacists is shown by older patients having chronic dis- eases and taking medicines on a regular basis, while the involvement of other categories of pharmacy’s visitors in preventive con- sultations remains low. This circumstance indicates the potential for strengthening the preventive component of pharmaceutical counseling, which will allow visitors to form a deeper understanding of pharmacists as full participants in the healthcare system.

As Canadian culture continues to grow an obsession with individualism in the era of the selfie, theatre has similarly found a new focus in shifting the spotlight from the stage to the audience. The result of such interests is participatory theatre, which reimagines the audience as players in a shared experience. In an evolving form of performance, audience members abandon the darkened theatre seats and the comfort of passivity in favour of agency. While thrilling, this radical shift in perspective is often accompanied by intense feelings of fear and insecurity. How can anyone be a “good” participant without knowing what to do? What if something goes wrong? To combat apprehension in would-be players, a new role has begun to appear in contemporary participatory theatre: the guide. Existing both in the reality of the performance and the world of the audience, the guide provides a safe space for participation. This role establishes the rules, and eases discomfort when necessary to ensure players can confidently contribute. By applying dramatic theory to a series of case studies, this presentation will highlight where the guide appears in contemporary Canadian theatre, and the critical function it plays in each performance’s success. Not only does it ensure that audience members embrace the attitude of a player, it allows the participant to feel comfortable enough to reflect on the purpose of their newfound activity. Ultimately, the guide will prevent the average theatregoer from dreading participation by facilitating meaningful play that is equal parts entertaining and aesthetically satisfying.
