Söderberg, Maja. « Being and making home in the world : A glimpse into the complexity of ordinary life in the Swedish northern village Vittangi ». Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kulturantropologi och etnologi, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-426771.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Having the Swedish northern village Vittangi as its field, this thesis asks what it is that makes Vittangi feel like home to its inhabitants and, further, how the sense of home motivate its inhabitants to participate in its place-making, i.e., in making it their home. Home is, in the thesis, understood as a subjective experience of rootedness. The ethnographic chapters therefore investigate, by focusing on the experience of everyday life in the village, how the sense of home is expressed through the inhabitants’ activities and movements in, to and through the village. Considering that the thesis’ focus is both on the sense of home and the making of home, its over-all aim is to examine the relationship between being and making home. Moreover, great attention is given to the values existing in the village, referring both to values created by global processes of economics, politics, and social activity, as well as values that are based in the experience of everyday life. In the end, the thesis argues that it is the experience-based values of Vittangi which makes it home to its inhabitants, and that it is these values which motivates inhabitants to partake in its place-making. Further, it is argued that the experience-based values cannot be separated from global processes of economics and politics, but that it is through the form they take in the locality which makes them valuable.

Résumé :
The life and career of Albert Wicker, Jr. (1869-1928), reflects the growth of the new urban African-American middle class in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early years of the twentieth century. He spent his career working for advances in education while using memberships in churches, Masonic groups, insurance companies, benevolent societies, and educational leagues to achieve his personal and professional goals. The networks created by him and others along the way illustrate not only complexity of black life in New Orleans but also the growing tendency of differing ethnic groups to work together to achieve common economic, political, social objectives.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter offers an in-depth analysis of how the interaction between the aid-recipient state institutions, civil society organizations, and funding partners evolved throughout the “Community Action for Health” project. It demonstrates how stakeholders articulated their resources—be it knowledge, skills, assets, or finances—and how the actors’ roles changed throughout the assistance. By zooming into the four phases of the project life cycle, namely, initiation, design, implementation, and evaluation, this chapter provides a compelling case for the actors’ interdependence and interrelation. This in-depth analysis also allows for an understanding of the reasons behind the selection of a pilot area and targets, the development of community-based organizations, and the countrywide expansion of the initiative. It offers a glimpse into a rare practice of involving aid recipients in the evaluation phase, how stakeholders decided on the assessment criteria, and how it evolved beyond the duration of the project.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter draws on The Pinewood Merry-Go-Round, a newly discovered primary source, which is a rare surviving example of a film studio magazine, produced at Pinewood by employees in 1946–1947. This chapter details how the magazine articulated Pinewood’s culture as a social enterprise as well as providing insights into its various working spaces. It brings to life the reality of being a studio employee, the day-to-day activities that are rarely described in film histories. The Pinewood Merry-Go-Round provides a rare glimpse into how studio employees bonded through sports and social clubs, musical and film groups, organising a Christmas pantomime, putting on art exhibitions, writing short stories, sharing studio gossip, and reporting issues of concern such as transport to work and long working hours.

Résumé :
The current contribution aims at describing some key aspects in Rocchi and Demonte’s graphic novel La Macchina Zero, published in 2021. This is Rocchi and Demonte’s third work narrating stories of Chinese migration to Italy, after Primavere e Autunni (2015) and Chinamen (2017). Differently from the first two graphic novels, La Macchina Zero gives back to collective memory a new glimpse on the history of Chinese in Italy, focusing on the role of Mario Tchou, a brilliant Sino-Italian electronic scientist, and his contribution both to the economic growth of the Olivetti enterprise and to the creation of one of the first new generation computers, ELEA 9003. The first part will highlight on the main events narrated in the graphic novel. After that, some specific considerations about the structure and style, semiotic aspects and communicative functions of La Macchina Zero will also be provided, also in comparison with the previous two works. The third paragraph will specifically focus on Mario Tchou, his life and his crucial contribution, as a transnational scientist, to the ascent of Olivetti worldwide.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter analyzes the special system of social protection called Previdência Social in the Portuguese dictatorship (1933–1974). Azevedo offers a novel view by focusing on social support for civil servants as the only case where the state had the duties of an employer. The chapter analyzes the impact of social benefits in the daily life of the social class, and its significance in the definition of the relationship between the individual and the state. Azevedo indicates how social benefits were used both as a legitimizing tool of the New State and as a means of guaranteeing social control. The chapter concludes with a glimpse at the transformation of the idea of Previdência Social, from a product of state generosity to a personal right.

Résumé :
SHORT PAPER. This paper discusses Codex Virtualis_Genesis (2020-2022) as an artistic engagement of Artificial Life (AL) that explores the nature of informational life as a symbiotic process. Created by Mexico City-based transnational collective Interspecifics (INT), this work follows on from the expanded notions of life central to the field of artificial life, including organic, inorganic, material, and virtual forms. According to its founder, Christopher Langton, “there is nothing... that restricts biology to carbon-based life; it is simply the only kind of life that has been available to study.” From this perspective, Langton proposed in the late 1990s that AL be dedicated, as he put it, to speculating beyond "life-as-we-know-it" into the realm of "life-as-it-could-be.” This discussion examines Codex Virtualis_Genesis in light of Langton’s proposal as a speculative inquiry into a symbiotic view of life, and as well in contrast to notions of artificial life art as a predominantly technophilic practice. Instead connected to the speculative imagination, the synthetic life forms of Codex Virtualis_Genesis offer a glimpse into life otherwise: as an interspecific relation.

Résumé :
The management of ageing civil infrastructure represents one of the most pressing challenges of modern societies. The last Infrastructure Report Card of the American Society of Civil Engineers (2017) estimated that 39% of the more than 600.000 bridges in USA are over 50 years old and estimated the rehabilitation costs at $123 billion. A similar picture emerges across Europe. Spain counts more than 2.606 km of high-speed railway, and a total of 207 critical bridges. An important number of them presents of one form of degradation or damage. The replacement rate is very low and that means an increase of ageing bridges in the next years. Despite large financial efforts have been dedicated to research in this field, the methodology has not been successfully completed/integrated, and life-extension of bridges is still sparsely implemented in practice. The last report of the European Joint Research Centre warned about the weak link between research and the wide-scale adoption of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies. The economic efficiency of the bridge is the total life cycle cost divided by its service life. New alternatives such as reliability-centered maintenance and reconditioning programs play an ever increasingly important role. However, these improvements are just the first glimpse of an ambitious and promising opportunity: bridge life-extension. To address these deficiencies the present methodology involves important advances on the real application of: SHM methodologies for high-speed railway ageing infrastructures, smart sensors, energy autonomy of the long-term monitoring system, and structural prognosis based on data-driven decision making.

Résumé :
China has very ambitious goals of expanding its commercial nuclear power by 30 Giga-Watts within the decade and wishes to phase out fossil fuels emissions by 40–45% by 2020 (from 2005 levels). With over 50 new nuclear power plants under construction or planned and a design life of 60 years, any discussions on structural integrity become very timely. Although China adopted its nuclear technology from France or US at present time, e.g. AP1000 of Westinghouse, the construction materials are primarily “Made in China”. Among all issues, both the accumulation of the knowledge base of the materials and structures used for the power plant and the technical capability of engineering personnel are imminent. This paper attempts to compile and assess the mechanical properties, Charpy V-notch impact energy, and fracture toughness of A508-3 steel used in Chinese nuclear reactor vessels. All data are collected from open literature and by no means complete. However, it provides a glimpse into how this domestically produced steel compares with western reactor vessel steels such as US A533B and Euro 20MnMoNi55.

Résumé :
Can the architectural classroom harness the power of advanced text-generating tools? This paper delves into the dramatic shifts spurred by these tools in architectural pedagogy, with a particular focus on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It underscores the pressing need to reconfigure our pedagogical strategies as we grapple with the profound implications of such technologies for traditional essay-based assessments. The advent of these text-generating tools in the academic realm presents two distinct paths for the future of architectural pedagogy. We could revert to traditional, invigilated examination methods, a choice fraught with challenges like exacerbating students’ exam anxieties and promoting rote learning. Alternatively, we could embrace progress, acknowledging the inevitable influence of these tools on student work, and pivot assessment strategies towards elements that currently elude these technologies – metacognitive and soft skills. This investigation acknowledges the ethical dilemmas of tool-assisted work, from blurred boundaries of authorship to potential inequities as students with access to superior tools gain an advantage. Yet, amidst these considerations, the study emphasises the enduring importance of a robust grounding in history, theory, criticism, in crafting socially meaningful, utilitarian, and life-enhancing architecture, even in the face of these tools’ transformative influence.Drawing on firsthand experience and empirical data from a restructured History, Theory, and Criticism course at a tertiary institution, this paper explores student feedback and how their perceptive and expectations of working with generative tools might be better aligned within an academic context within a supportive, ethical and transparent framework. This perspective offers a glimpse into the potential of a pedagogical model that incorporates these tools while preserving the primacy of critical thinking and research skills. As we navigate this evolving educational landscape, this study underscores the imperative of preparing our students not just for the architectural challenges of today but for the tool-enhanced realities of tomorrow.

Résumé :
The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic was a shock for the global economy. It affected almost every country, but certainly in developing countries its impact was harder. The immediate effect was the shortage of several medical and paramedical equipment which were necessary to prevent the virus spread. This shortage was felt in Albanian markets as well and was rapidly followed by a sharp increase of prices in paramedical products. The consumers suffered the highly increased prices amongst fear that in absence of these products, their life was threatened. This behaviour of the market participants was considered suspicious by the Competition Authority which decided to initiate a preliminary investigation to find out whether this behaviour was abusive, or it normally reflected the sudden shortage and the state of emergency. The instigation of this procedure was based on several complaints reported in the media and complaints directly submitted by consumers to the Competition Authority. At the first glance, the traders were exploiting the health emergency to maximise their profits. Subsequently, the Competition Authority (CA) decided to apply some preliminary measures on the wholesale market operators. Furthermore, the CA intervened even in a case of a company in dominant position which was furnishing selected pharmacies. These interventions aimed at restoring somehow the distorted competition in paramedical and medical products. This article will try to shed light on the current market situation and on the effectiveness of the interventions of the CA. How should the Competition Authority behave to restore the distorted competition? Are the current introduced measures enough to help all market participants overcome this state of health emergency? These questions and other issues related with the peculiar situation will be addressed in the current article. The article will be organized as follows: First, a glimpse of the regulation of Albanian competition law will be given. Second, the situation under COVID-19 emergency will be elaborated taking into consideration the guidelines of Communication of the Commission on “Temporary Framework for assessing antitrust issues related to business cooperation in response to situations of urgency stemming from the current COVID-19 outbreak” (2020/C 116 I/02). Lastly, the evaluation of the measures introduced by the Competition authority will be analysed and recommendations will be provided.
