Résumé :
A Review of: Ciszek, M. P. (2011). Out on the web: The relationship between campus climate and GLBT-related web-based resources in academic libraries. The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 37(5), 430-436. doi: 10.1016/j.acalib.2011.06.007 Objective – To explore whether academic institutions that score highly on the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index also have well-developed Web-based library resources to support GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) students. Design – Website analysis, percentage, and binary logistic regression analysis. Setting – Library websites of colleges and universities in four American geographic regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Subjects – There were 259 colleges and universities that participated in the 2010 LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index. Methods – The author visited the library websites of all institutions and surveyed available GLBT-related resources. The criteria for online resources included: 1) A research guide for GLBT studies or geared toward GLBT students, 2) An individual identified within the research guide as a contact for GLBT-related resources, and 3) A subscription to EBSCO’s GLBT Life database. Whether or not the academic libraries had the above resources was then analyzed with each institution’s score on the climate survey scale. The author controlled for geographical location, religious affiliation, and campus setting of the college or university. Main Results – There is a positive direct relationship between whether a library makes GLBT resources available on the Web and campus climate. However, only 25% of libraries surveyed published a research guide, 18% named a contact individual, and 31% subscribed to GLBT Life. Conclusion – While parent institutions commit to GLBT students by taking the LBGT-Friendly Campus Climate Index survey, academic libraries lag behind providing online resources for this community. The author recommends academic libraries: • Create a top-level GLBT research guide. • Provide contact information for a staff person assigned to provide GLBT-related research assistance. • Assign a resource selector for GLBT-related resources. • Subscribe to GLBT-related databases. • Partner with GLBT organizations on campus to improve collections. • Promote GLBT-related collections to the campus community. • Perform an assessment of the information and resource needs of GLBT campus community members. • Ensure the GLBT community is included in programming and services.

Résumé :
Abstract School speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are increasingly likely to serve children of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) parents or GLBT students as cultural and societal changes create growth in the population and increased willingness to disclose sexual orientation. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has a progressive nondiscrimination statement that includes sexual orientation as a protected status and strongly urges the membership to develop cultural competence as a matter of ethical service delivery. The purpose of this article is to describe cultural competence in relation to GLBT culture, discuss GLBT parent and student cultural issues as they are important in parent-school or student-school relations, and to provide suggestions for increasing sensitivity in these types of interactions. A list of resources is provided.

Résumé :
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) public school educators’ rights have not been clearly delineated by the courts. As such, the outcomes in legal controversies involving adverse employment consequences based on teachers’ sexual orientation have varied somewhat across jurisdictions and have been decided on a case-by-case basis. To examine the evolving law in this arena, this article analyzes all litigation pertaining to GLBT educators and antidiscrimination statutory provisions in all 50 states. By identifying and examining federal and state protections, this research contributes to an understanding of the role that legal requirements play in protecting GLBT public employees. Based on the comprehensive analysis of litigation and legislation, this article offers model statutory language to protect GLBT public employees.

Résumé :
Abstract. The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) population is a good example of a demographic group that has been understudied because it is difficult to develop a subsample of sufficient size from typical national samples. Here we exploit the extraordinary size of a 2006 online election day survey (with about 35,000 respondents) to examine how the GLBT community behaves politically. While it will surprise no one that this community bestowed little support on Stephen Harper's Conservative party in the 2006 federal election, the factors behind such a consistent vote pattern are not adequately understood. In order to shed more light on the voting behaviour of the GLBT electorate, we develop a socio-demographic profile of the group, and explore three explanatory angles: 1) salience of issue campaign dynamics, given that the same-sex marriage issue was prominent in 2006; 2) ideological and attitudinal proclivities; and 3) strategic considerations.Résumé.

This paper conducts an investigation of the collective action organized by the LGBT movement in Goiania, seeking to demystify the character of uniqueness attributed to it, giving rise to the development of an interpretive framework capable of perceiving the plurality of actors and logics of action. I use Bourdieu's concept of habitus to view the process of aggregation of individuals, as well as the formation of homosexual identities positioned in a relationship of rulers and ruled in a heteronormative hegemonic social order. But how to systematize the LGBT movement in Goiania seeks to promote the struggle for positive recognition, is to present a breakdown of its social power into internal, semi-external and external. This allows you to view a schematic circuit energies of formation of networks of solidarity, used to maintain the cohesion of the social force within the field of LGBT activism. It is also evident that the agents are not in harmony, since that produce new hierarchies within the field of activism LGBT, but also tend to control the voltages to allow the maintenance and expansion of the field.

Relationships are about the people in them. Choosing a partner that provides the right balance can alter the value of any relationship. After briefly surveying the history of marriage in the United States, this thesis will examine five long-term same-sex couples illustrating how same-sex unions are quite similar to opposite sex unions. Each couple faces challenges in the home, in the work place, and in their personal lives; each weathers the same struggles that opposite sex couples encounter. The differences between heterosexual and homosexual unions are negligible, and mandate a redefinition of marriage in society.

Résumé :
This study examined how stigma and dialectical tensions affect information sharing by gay men. One specific area that was investigated is the use of interpersonal boundary spanning techniques in managing information related to being gay. The research used a qualitative, interpretive method to gather and analyze data from eleven in-depth interviews. An interview schedule was developed based on the critical incident technique in order to focus the interviews on specific events and direct observation. The questions in the interview covered individuals experiences with sharing their sexual orientation with someone else for the first time, times when they have specifically chosen to share or not share their orientation, boundaries that exist between the GLBT community and the larger community in which it resides, and techniques used when sharing general information about being gay. The data was analyzed for relational themes described by Owen (1984) as those that emerge through recurrence, repetition, and forcefulness. The themes that emerged were how stigma affects coming out both initially and continuously, managing stigma and dialectical tension, and techniques used in interpersonal boundary spanning. Two major contributions emerged: the relationship between stigma and intrapersonal dialectical tensions, and interpersonal boundary spanning. Stigma can change how easy it is to manage intrapersonal dialectical tensions, such as a normal-different tension. Interpersonal boundary spanning can help the stigmatized individual to demonstrate his normality, and interpersonal boundary spanning helps to reduce stereotyping and negative perception of the stigmatized group.

Résumé :

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) urban districts are a unique aspect of many cities in the United States. Geographically, these spaces are dynamic, although largely ignored by geographers. Within the limited literature concerning this topic in the field of geography and other social science disciplines, a clear gap emerges concerning the definition of the key characteristics of LGBT districts and the application of those characteristics to any given city in the United States. Four characteristics emerge from existing literature as the most commonly studied regarding such districts, including a historical connection, a business concentration, a residential component, and a visual LGBT landscape.

The following thesis examines these four common characteristics and how they come together to define an LGBT district. This study analyzes these characteristics within the spatial context of St. Louis, Missouri, to examine if the city has a LGBT district. Each characteristic was examined using various methodological approaches including: interviews, surveys, field observation, and archival research. After data analysis for each characteristic, findings indicate the four characteristics are not wholly present in any one single area of the City of St. Louis. Lack of business diversity, minimal visual cues, insufficient historical connection, and no evidence of any residential concentration come together to provide data supporting the conclusion that St. Louis, Missouri is only home to an LGBT entertainment district, rather than a fully comprehensive LGBT district.

Résumé :

The purpose of this project was to write a grant proposal for funds to develop a substance abuse program for GLBT adolescents at the Gay and Lesbian Center of Greater Long Beach, CA. (GLCGLB).

Consultations with the GLCGLB staff and findings from the literature review highlighted the need for a substance abuse program for GLBT adolescents due to their risk and the little attention received in regards to treatment. The proposed program offers culturally relevant psychoeducation, prevention and treatment groups for GLBT adolescents. The goal of the proposed program is to decrease substance use among GLBT adolescents in Long Beach and dispel the stigma around addiction and treatment as well as help GLBT adolescents to recover from substance use-related illnesses. The identified funding source is the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation Inc. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

Résumé :

The purpose of this grant proposal is to obtain funding for the creation of an after school program for at-risk youth of underserved populations. The literature review increased knowledge about the problem behaviors exhibited by at-risk youth that may interfere with positive behaviors, academic achievement, and overall well-being. The problem behaviors are, but not limited to, risky sexual behaviors at a premature age, drug use, aggressiveness, defiance, detachment from school, lack of supervision, and behaviors that may be linked to mental health issues. An extensive search for a potential funder resulted in the Annenberg Foundation. The Annenberg Foundation has funded many projects that involve the education and development of youth. A grant proposal was written to support the population served by Olive Crest, a non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of abused or neglected children.

Résumé :
AbstractTo deal with the problem of weak target detection, a cascaded generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) radar/infrared lidar heterogeneous information fusion algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm makes full use of the target characteristics in microwave/infrared spectrum and the scanning efficiency of different sensors. According to the correlation of target position in the multi-sensor view field, the GLRT statistic derived from the radar measurements is compared with a lower threshold so as to generate initial candidate targets with high detection probability. Subsequently, the lidar is guided to scan the candidate regions and the final decision is made by GLRT detector to discriminate the false alarm. To get the best detection performance, the optimal detection parameters are obtained by nonlinear optimization for the cascaded GLRT Radar/Infrared lidar heterogeneous information fusion detection algorithm. Simulation results show that the cascaded GLRT heterogeneous information fusion detector comprehensively utilizes the advantages of radar and infrared lidar sensors in detection efficiency and performance, which effectively improves the detection distance upon radar weak targets within the allowable time.

Résumé :
Bio-prosthetic heart valves (BHVs), with glutaraldehyde-treated bovine pericardium (GLBP) leaflets, have been used extensively to replace diseased heart valves. BHVs display superior hemodynamics to mechanical valves; however, their use is limited due to poor durability resulting from in vivo degradation and fatigue damage of the leaflets. Yet, little is known about the fatigue properties of GLBP tissue. Sun et al. [1] has previously studied the effects of fatigue on GLBP tissue specimens which were cyclically stretched up to 65×106 cycles. The fatigued GLBP specimens exhibited altered material properties and geometry (permanent set). Because fatigue experiments are very time-consuming and costly, there is a need to develop predictive models to accurately capture tissue fatigue experimental data. Furthermore, it is desirable that such tissue fatigue models could be incorporated into computational simulations to investigate the effects of complicated loading conditions, such as in BHV applications, on device durability.

Résumé :
Radioactive material packages used for transportation of plutonium-bearing materials often contain multiple O-ring seals for containment. Packages such as the Model 9975 are also being used for interim storage of Pu-bearing materials at the Savannah River Site (SRS). One of the seal materials used in such packages is Viton® GLT fluoroelastomer. The aging behavior of containment vessel O-rings based on Viton® GLT at long-term containment term storage conditions is being characterized to assess its performance in such applications. This paper summarizes the program and test results to date.
