Résumé :
Geometric features, such as the topological and manifold properties, are utilized to extract geometric properties. Geometric methods that exploit the applications of geometrics, e.g., geometric features, are widely used in computer graphics and computer vision problems. This review presents a literature review on geometric concepts, geometric methods, and their applications in human-related analysis, e.g., human shape analysis, human pose analysis, and human action analysis. This review proposes to categorize geometric methods based on the scope of the geometric properties that are extracted: object-oriented geometric methods, feature-oriented geometric methods, and routine-based geometric methods. Considering the broad applications of deep learning methods, this review also studies geometric deep learning, which has recently become a popular topic of research. Validation datasets are collected, and method performances are collected and compared. Finally, research trends and possible research topics are discussed.

Résumé :
This thesis is devoted to the study of several problems arising in the field of nonlinear analysis. The work is divided in two parts: the first one concerns existence of oscillating solutions, in a suitable sense, for some nonlinear ODEs and PDEs, while the second one regards the study of qualitative properties, such as monotonicity and symmetry, for solutions to some elliptic problems in unbounded domains. Although the topics faced in this work can appear far away one from the other, the techniques employed in different chapters share several common features. In the firts part, the variational structure of the considered problems plays an essential role, and in particular we obtain existence of oscillating solutions by means of non-standard versions of the Nehari's method and of the Seifert's broken geodesics argument. In the second part, classical tools of geometric analysis, such as the moving planes method and the application of Liouville-type theorems, are used to prove 1-dimensional symmetry of solutions in different situations.

Résumé :
This essay is a detailed survey of an article from 1996 published by Franc Forstneric, where he studies symplectic automorphisms of C2n. The vision is to introduce the density property for holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Our idea is that of Dror Varolin when he in 2001 introduced the concept of density property for Stein manifolds. The main result here is the introduction of symplectic shears on C2n equipped with a holomorphic symplectic form and to show that the group generated by finite compositions of symplectic shears is dense in the group of symplectic automorphisms of C2n in the compact-open topology. We give a complete background of the tools from the theory of ordinary differential equations, smooth manifolds, and complex and symplectic geometry that is needed in order to prove this result.

Given a holomorphic self-map of complex projective space of de-gree larger than one, we prove that there exists a finite collection oftotally invariant algebraic sets with the following property: given anypositive closed (1,1)-current of mass 1 with no mass on any element of this family, the sequence of normalized pull-backs of the current converges to the Green current. Under suitable geometric conditions on the collection of totally invariant algebraic sets, we prove a sharper equidistribution result.

Résumé :
AbstractLarge-scale Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have recently gained considerable research attention for their ability to model the inter- and intra- relationships of data. However, the huge scale of KGs has necessitated the use of querying methods to facilitate human use. Question Answering (QA) systems have shown much promise in breaking down this human-machine barrier. A recent QA model that achieved state-of-the-art performance, Query2box, modelled queries on a KG using box embeddings with an attention mechanism backend to compute the intersections of boxes for query resolution. In this paper, we introduce a new model, Query2Geom, which replaces the Query2box attention mechanism with a novel, exact geometric calculation. Our findings show that Query2Geom generally matches the performance of Query2box while having many fewer parameters. Our analysis of the two models leads us to formally describe the interaction between knowledge graph data and box embeddings with the concepts of semantic-geometric alignment and mismatch. We create the Attention Deviation Metric as a measure of how well the geometry of box embeddings captures the semantics of a knowledge graph, and apply it to explain the difference in performance between Query2box and Query2Geom. We conclude that Query2box’s attention mechanism operates using “latent intersections” that attend to the semantic properties in embeddings not expressed in box geometry, acting as a limit on model interpretability. Finally, we generalise our results and propose that semantic-geometric mismatch is a more general property of attention mechanisms, and provide future directions on how to formally model the interaction between attention and latent semantics.

Résumé :
The need for geometrical variations management is an important issue in design, manufacturing and all other phases of product development. Two main axioms cover geometrical variations, namely the axiom of manufacturing imprecision and the axiom of measurement uncertainty. Therefore, this paper reviews common models for the description of non-ideal geometry (shape with geometric deviations) and shows how the random field theory can be applied to create more realistic skin models (a model which comprises these geometric deviations). Furthermore, methods to estimate and to express the underlying random field from a sample population are shown. These can be used to create and simulate random shapes considering systematic and random deviations observed through measurement or gathered from manufacturing process simulations. The proposed approach incorporates given information from manufacturing process simulations or prototypes. Based on these information, skin model samples are created which can represent the “realistic” part in assembly simulations or other geometrical analyses. This can help to identify the optimal tolerance sets within every stage of the product development process. The efficiency of the introduced approaches is shown in a case study.

Résumé :
Geometrical part robustness is used today as an engineering criterion in many manufacturing companies. The goal is to minimize the effect of geometrical variation by optimizing the locating schemes for the parts. Several methods and tools now exist to support geometrical robustness optimization for parts, but also for assemblies. In this paper the focus is on geometrical decoupling, which is one parameter of geometrical robustness of the different locating strategies in a complete assembly line. A goodness value is proposed that describes the level of geometrical couplings in a complete assembly line together with the part robustness value. By calculating this goodness value it is possible to predict the geometrical sensitivity of a complete assembly line as well as predicting the risk of geometrical variation in the final product. To illustrate the definition of this goodness value, and also the purpose of calculating it, a case study is used where a part of a sheet metal assembly line is described. Several different scenarios (assembly concepts) are applied to clarify the meaning and to validate this definition of the goodness value. The case study shows that the goodness value gives a good indication of the level of geometrical couplings within the assembly line and that this value can be used to evaluate different assembly concepts, with their locating concepts, against each other. The goal is to have a more robust and also geometrically decoupled assembly line which enables root-cause analysis in production, and also optimizes the geometrical quality minimizing the effect of geometrical variation of the final product from the plant.

Résumé :
A generalized helical needle tip geometry model, which can describe many typical needle tip geometries, including conical, bevel, blunt and helical shapes with proper geometric parameters, is presented based on analogy to the helical point drill geometry. The generality of this model offers a general way for manufacturing various needle tip geometries. A mathematical model of the helical needle tip geometry is provided along with the formulation of the kinematic model of the tip grinding process. The control strategy on a 5-axis grinding machine system is also developed to implement the designed kinematic model. The needle tip’s motions in the grinding process are simulated to characterize the effects of grinding parameters on needle tip properties and to predict the trajectory of the needle tip point during the grinding process. Finally, several types of needle geometries have been manufactured by the developed grinding process to verify the newly formulated models.

Résumé :
The Old River Control Complex (ORCC) consists of the Low Sill, Auxiliary, and Overbank structures as features of the Old River Control Structure (ORCS) and the privately owned hydro-electric power plant. Operations of the ORCC manage the hydrologic connectivity between the Mississippi River and the Atchafalaya River/Red River systems. The morphology of the Old, the Mississippi, the Atchafalaya, and the Red Rivers (OMAR) has been influenced by the flow distribution at the ORCC, as well as the accompanying bed sediments. A geomorphic assessment of the OMAR is underway to understand the morphological changes associated with operation of the ORCC. Supporting the geomorphic assessment, a channel geometry analysis herein documents observed adjustments of the affected river channels. Historical hydrographic survey data were used in the Geographic Information System to create river channel geometric models, which inform the analysis. Geometric parameters for cross sections and volume polygons were computed for each survey and evaluated for morphological trends which may be ascribed to the influence of the ORCC. Additionally, the geometric parameters for the Atchafalaya River were used to extend the geometry analyses from the 1951 Mississippi River Commission report on the Atchafalaya River, which was the primary catalyst for the initial development of the ORCS.

Résumé :
One of the successful components of quality assimilation of educational material and its further use in the learning process is visualization of material in secondary education institutions. Visualizations need the subjects of the school course, which are the most difficult to understand and essentially do not have at the beginning of the study of widespread practical application, mostly mathematical objects. That is why this study aimed to analyze mobile tools that can be used to visualize teaching geometry. The object of the study is the process of teaching geometry in the middle classes of secondary schools. The subject of the study is the use of augmented reality tools in teaching geometry to students in grades 7-9. The study used such research methods as the analysis and justification of the choice of mobile augmented reality for the study of mathematics. Analyses displayed two augmented reality tools: ArloonGeometry and Geometry AR. In order to gain geometry instruction’s academic success for the students, these tools can be used by teachers to visualize training material and create a problematic situation. The use of augmented reality means in the geometry lessons creates precisely such conditions for positive emotional interaction between the student and the teacher. It also provided support to reduce fear and anxiety attitudes towards geometry classes. The emotional component of learning creates the conditions for better memorization of the educational material, promotes their mathematical interest, realizes their creative potential, creates the conditions for finding different ways of solving geometric problems.

Résumé :
This report documents the geomorphic assessment component of the Old River, Mississippi River, Atchafalaya River, and Red River System Technical Assessment. The overall objectives of the geomorphic assessment are to utilize all available data to document the historic trends in hydrology, sedimentation, and channel geometry for the rivers in the vicinity of the Old River Control Complex and to summarize the changes observed at locations where repetitive datasets exist and at key reaches that are determined during the study. The geomorphic assessment tasks include data compilation, geometric data analysis, gage and discharge analysis, dredge record analysis, sediment data analysis, development of an events timeline, and integration of results. Geomorphic reaches were developed, and the morphological trends during different time periods were identified. The geomorphic assessment highlighted the importance of considering spatial and temporal variability when assessing morphological trends.

Résumé :
Geometric acoustics, or acoustic ray theory, is used to analyze the scattering of high-amplitude acoustic waves incident upon rigid circular cylinders. Theoretical predictions of the nonlinear evolution of the scattered wave field are provided, as well as measures of the importance of accounting for nonlinearity. An analysis of scattering by many cylinders is also provided, though the effects of multiple scattering are not considered. Provided the characteristic nonlinear distortion length is much larger than a cylinder radius, the nonlinear evolution of the incident wave is shown to be of much greater importance to the overall evolution than the nonlinear evolution of the individual scattered waves.
