The validity and necessity of subspecies as a taxonomic category and the implications of the subspecies concept in various taxa of animals is subject of debates since its very existence. In case of the species of the lygaeoid subfamily Geocorinae there are multiple examples of species consisting of up to nine subspecies which were mostly described as varieties or forms before the middle of 20th century, but upgraded to valid subspecies subsequently, usually without providing any arguments. As part of an integrated taxonomic study on the Palaearctic representatives of Geocorinae, the status of the subspecies of Geocoris (Piocoris) erythrocephalus (Lepeletier & Serville, 1825) was revisited. A critical review of the literature available and our studies, involving analysis of COI sequences, morphological examination and distribution data processing with the use of Geographic Information System, concluded that two of the three subspecies, G. e. erythrocephalus and G. e. marginellus Horváth, 1907, can be considered valid, while G. e. litoreus Horváth, 1895, is merely a phenotypically manifested infrasubspecific genetic variety of G. e. erythrocephalus, with no taxonomic value as it was suggested by earlier study of another author. Besides the interpretation of evidence, the applicability of the subspecies concept in Geocorinae is discussed as well.

Résumé :
We investigated the predation ability of big-eyed bugs Geocoris ochropterus on different single prey species of thrips, whiteflies, and aphids. Results indicated that G. ochropterus adults consumed the highest number of aphids per day (33.6 ± 3.35). First instar nymphs of G. ochropterus showed low ability to consume prey, while from second to fifth instar nymphs showed high ability to consume prey with significant differences. The number of eggs deposited per female fed on whiteflies was significantly different larger than other prey types. In addition, development time of Geocoris ochropterus nymphs first to fourth instar was longest when fed on aphids and significantly different among prey types. Results suggest that G. ochropterus consumed the highest numbers of aphids, with the order of preference aphids > whiteflies > thrips.

Résumé :
Abstract Increasing habitat complexity through cover cropping has been proposed as a tactic to reduce herbivore colonization and encourage natural enemies in cropping systems. To test the supposition that cover crops can be used to alter arthropod communities, we compared arthropod communities on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.; Cucurbitaceae) interplanted with a red clover (Trifolium pratense L.; Fabaceae) living mulch and grown as a monoculture. In 2016 and 2017, visual surveys and yellow sticky card traps were used to estimate numbers of arthropod natural enemies and herbivores in each treatment. Among herbivores, striped cucumber beetles [Acalymma vittatum (Fabricius, 1775); Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] and melon aphids (Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877; Hemiptera: Aphididae) had lower densities in the presence of red clover. However, populations of spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber, 1947; Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) had a variable response to red clover. Sticky card captures of natural enemies, including bigeyed bugs (Geocoris spp. Fallén; Hemiptera: Geocoridae), minute pirate bugs (Orius spp. Wolff; Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), and lady beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), were generally greater in cucumber interplanted with red clover than monoculture. Overall, cucumber yield did not differ between treatments. Findings from this study lend support to the hypothesis that greater habitat complexity can reduce herbivore densities.

Résumé :
Abstract Generalist invertebrate predators contribute to pest management in agriculture, providing an important ecosystem service, particularly in organically managed fields. DNA-based methods to study food webs and feeding interactions in unrestricted field conditions have transformed dietary analysis of generalist predators. In this study, we used MiSeq next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology and universal arthropod primers to investigate the diet of several generalist insect predators collected in commercial organic Florida strawberry fields from November 2017 to March 2018. Of 12 predator insect taxa, Geocoris spp. (Say) (Hemiptera: Geocoridae) was the most abundant early in the growing season (November) and was collected consistently until the end of the season (early March). DNA sequences from 105 predator samples were matched to 44 arthropod families, and of these, 17 were categorized as pest families, 10 as nonpest or nonpredator families, and 17 as predator families. Drosophilidae was the most detected pest family, and Dolichopodidae was the most detected predator family. Prey diversity differed among the predators. Chrysoperla spp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) consumed more prey earlier in the season than did other predators, whereas the other predators consumed a greater diversity of other predators regardless of month. Our results showed a high amount of intraguild predation, but also that predators are contributing to pest suppression in organic strawberries and providing an important biological control service in Florida organic strawberries.

Résumé :
Big-eyed bugs Geocoris spp. (Lygaeidae, Hemiptera) are small insects that is found in many parts of the world. They are beneficial because they eat a multitude of insect pests in agriculture. Big-eyed bugs Geocoris spp. are insects that receive research attention in Florida and elsewhere because of the benefits that this species give to plants (Mead, 2001). Big-eyed bugs reproduce many generations in a year on weeds, perennial crops, bushes. In spring the female big-eyed bugs start laying eggs on the bud, the leaves of the host plant. Understanding the biology and the role of predator Geocoris spp. in ecosystem will provide an alternative method in sustainable agriculture development. In this short review, we discuss some convenient diets for the application of mass rearing Geocoris spp.

Résumé :
The southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis Barber, is the most important insect pest of St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze. Fifteen chinch bug infestations in St. Augustinegrass lawns in Florida were sampled by vacuuming. Additional vacuum samples were taken in 15 randomly selected St. Augustinegrass lawns. The big-eyed bug, Geocoris uliginosus Say, was the most frequent and abundant big-eyed bug found at the infestations. Data showed that big-eyed bugs (Geocoris spp.) were highly aggregated at chinch bug infestations. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between numbers of chinch bugs and big-eyed bugs at chinch bug infestations showing that big-eyed bugs had a numerical predator response to increasing chinch bug populations.

Roundup Ready® soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, in narrow-row planting systems were investigated in 1998 in Mississippi to evaluate the effects of the transgenic crop and glyphosate herbicide on pest and beneficial insects. Insects found in sufficient numbers for meaningful analysis included adult bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster); adult three-cornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say); adult big-eyed bug, Geocoris punctipes (Say), and; larvae of green cloverworm, Plathypena scabra (F.), and velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner). Populations of C. trifurcata, S. festinus, P. scabra and A. gemmatalis were not reduced in genetically altered Roundup Ready soybean, or by recommended (by label) or delayed applications of glyphosate. Numbers of G. punctipes also were not reduced in Roundup Ready soybean, but were reduced by recommended applications of glyphosate during weeks three and four following the second recommended herbicide application. Geocoris punctipes densities also were reduced at 1 and 2 wks after the first glyphosate application in plots in which the second application of glyphosate was delayed. Numbers of G. punctipes may have been indirectly reduced by glyphosate within sample weeks two and three because of variations in weed densities after treatment with the herbicide.
