Résumé :
The study examines the role of intellectual capital (IC) management in explaining the mismatch between performances of the Nigerian telecommunications industry’s annual growth rate (16.3%) and that of the nation’s economic average growth rate (4.3%) over the last two decades (1986–2010). Through a previously published research instrument, data were collected from 320 managers from 29 telecommunication companies using stratified random sampling technique. The major findings of the study as highlighted by the regression analysis (Partial Least Square techniques) of the data, revealed that the sampled telecommunication companies lack the organisational know-how and communication aptitude to leverage their embedded organisational knowledge (Structural capital) into business performance ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) notwithstanding their knowledge creation and retention strategies. Hence, Knowledge utilisation rather than knowledge creation appears the main challenge of the industry which has made it perform below expectation despite the industry’s tremendous infrastructural investment. The study thereby recommends that policy makers and telecommunication managers should begin to analyse the economic impact and contribution of IC in the sector as a means of boosting the sector’s corporate business performance in the overall aim of accelerating the nation’s economic development. Moreover, as a way of addressing this obvious managerial inadequacy, the study recommends the position of Chief Knowledge Officer to be saddled with responsibility of effectively leveraging knowledge generated in the industry for optimum organisational performance and national development.

Résumé :
With the rising growth of the telecommunication industry, the customer churn problem has grown in significance as well. One of the most critical challenges in the data and voice telecommunication service industry is retaining customers, thus reducing customer churn by increasing customer satisfaction. Telecom companies have depended on historical customer data to measure customer churn. However, historical data does not reveal current customer satisfaction or future likeliness to switch between telecom companies. The related research reveals that many studies have focused on developing churner prediction models based on historical data. These models face delay issues and lack timelines for targeting customers in real-time. In addition, these models lack the ability to tap into Arabic language social media for real-time analysis. As a result, the design of a customer churn model based on real-time analytics is needed. Therefore, this study offers a new approach to using social media mining to predict customer churn in the telecommunication field. This represents the first work using Arabic Twitter mining to predict churn in Saudi Telecom companies. The newly proposed method proved its efficiency based on various standard metrics and based on a comparison with the ground-truth actual outcomes provided by a telecom company.

Résumé :
The rapid development of modern information technology has led to fierce competition in today's telecommunication industry. Telecommunication firms' accountability demands that operating efficiency be measured, maximized, and benchmarked. This study proposes an alternative context-dependent data envelopment analysis (DEA) technique to explore the managerial performance and the benchmarks of 24 global leading telecom operators. The analysis measures the relative attractiveness and progress of global telecom operators on a specific performance level against operators exhibiting poorer and/or better performance. The set operators are grouped into different levels of efficiency frontiers. Each efficiency frontier on a specific performance level is then used as an evaluation context for the relative attractiveness and progress. The performance of the efficient telecoms changes as the inefficient telecoms change their performance. It is shown that the context-dependent DEA can be used to differentiate and benchmark the performance of efficient DMUs. These benchmarks may give a first guideline for performance improvement of global telecommunication operators.

This paper analyzes the state of Internet penetration across the developing world. We examine a variety of socioeconomic, human capital, and media and technology-related measures as they relate to Internet adoption. Results demonstrate that the Internet is not only dependent on economic variables such as spendable income, costs and poverty, but also education, literacy, share of urban population; population growth, and old and new telecommunication measures such as telephone subscriptions, broadband subscriptions and related costs, computer and mobile phone ownership, number of telecommunication secured lines and bits generated, trade matters such as communication services exports, and political environment issues such as political and democratic openness, economic freedom, and freedom of the press. Contrary to earlier research, gdpand English language are not statistically significant variables. Our findings on telecommunication industry competition and literacy run contrary to many earlier studies that find these variables to be unrelated to the Internet.

Résumé :
With the evolution of the 5th generation mobile network (5G), the telecommunications industry has considerably affected livelihoods and resulted in the development of national economies worldwide. To increase revenue per customer and secure long-term contracts with users, telecommunications firms and enterprises have launched diverse types of telecommunication packages to satisfy varied user requirements. Several systems for recommending telecommunication packages have been recently proposed. However, extracting effective feature information from large and complex consumption data remains challenging. Conventional methods for the recommendation of telecommunications packages either rely on complex expert feature engineering or fail to perform end-to-end deep learning (DL) during training. In this study, we propose a recommender system based on the Deep and Cross Network (DCN), deep belief network (DBN), embedding, and Word2Vec using the learning abilities of DL-based approaches. The proposed system fits the recommender system for telecommunication packages in terms of click-through rate prediction to provide a potential solution to the recommendation challenges faced by telecommunication enterprises. The proposed model captures the finite order interactional and deep hidden features. Additionally, the text information in the data is used to improve the model’s recommendation capability. The proposed method also does not require feature engineering. We conducted comprehensive experiments using real-world datasets, the results of which demonstrated that our proposed method outperformed other methods based on DBNs, DCNs, deep factorization machines, and deep neural networks in terms of the area under the ROC curve, cross entropy (log loss), and recall metrics.

Résumé :
The evolution of broadband telecommunication technologies has enabled applications over networks, which, in turn, has enabled the emergence of novel network services and applications such as VoIP and video on demand in triggering demand for higher network bandwidth. Passive Optical Networking (PON) is suitable for eliminating bandwidth insufficiency, so national governments and communities are observing the emergence of Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) technologies. Ethernet-based Passive Optical Networks (EPON) and Gigabit-based PON (GPON) are two candidates for next-generation PON in bandwidth efficiency. To predict which is more suitable nationally, we define a foresight framework based on hybrid Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods for selecting the most suitable PON. The development of next-generation PON, including Ethernet PON (EPON) and Gigabit PON (GPON), is introduced and compared. Experts from industry and academia were invited to predict the most suitable next-generation PON for Japan and emerging economies such as Taiwan. Results showed that EPON is most suitable for Japan and GPON most suitable for Taiwan. Results for the technological foresight can serve as the basis for national telecommunication policy and business product definition.

Résumé :
Nowadays, train control in-lab simulation tools play a crucial role in reducing extensive and expensive on-site railway testing activities. In this paper, we present our contribution in this arena by detailing the internals of our European Railway Train Management System in-lab demonstrator. This demonstrator is built over a general-purpose simulation framework, Riverbed Modeler, previously Opnet Modeler. Our framework models both ERTMS subsystems, the Automatic Train Protection application layer based on movement authority message exchange and the telecommunication subsystem based on GSM-R communication technology. We provide detailed information on our modelling strategy. We also validate our simulation framework with real trace data. To conclude, under current industry migration scenario from GSM-R legacy obsolescence to IP-based heterogeneous technologies, our simulation framework represents a singular tool to railway operators. As an example, we present the assessment of related performance indicators for a specific railway network using a candidate replacement technology, LTE, versus current legacy technology. To the best of our knowledge, there is no similar initiative able to measure the impact of the telecommunication subsystem in the railway network availability.

Résumé :
Social media is now regarded as the most valuable source of data for trend analysis and innovative business process reengineering preferences. Data made accessible through social media can be utilized for a variety of purposes, such as by an entrepreneur who wants to learn more about the market they intend to enter and uncover their consumers’ requirements before launching their new products or services. Sentiment analysis and text mining of telecommunication businesses via social media posts and comments are the subject of this study. A proposed framework will be utilized as a guideline, and it will be tested for sentiment analysis. Lexicon-based sentiment categorization is used as a model training dataset for a supervised machine learning support vector machine. The result is very promising. The accuracy and the quantity of the true sentiments it can detect are compared. This result signifies the usefulness of text mining and sentiment analysis on social media data, while the use of machine learning classifiers for predicting sentiment orientation provides a useful tool for operations and marketing departments. The availability of large amounts of data in this digitally active society is advantageous for sectors such as the telecommunication industry. These companies can be two steps ahead with their strategy and develop a more cohesive company that can make customers happier and mitigate problems easily with the use of text mining and sentiment analysis for further adopting innovative business process reengineering for service improvements within the telecommunications industry.

Résumé :
Abstract The issue of energy-aware traffic engineering has become prominent in telecommunications industry in the last years. This paper presents a two-criteria network optimization problem, in which routing and bandwidth allocation are determined jointly, so as to minimize the amount of energy consumed by a telecommunication infrastructure and to satisfy given demands represented by a traffic matrix. A scalarization of the criteria is proposed and the choice of model parameters is discussed in detail. The model of power dissipation as a function of carried traffic in a typical software router is introduced. Then the problem is expressed in a form suitable for the mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) solver. The paper is concluded with a set of small, illustrative computational examples. Computed solutions are implemented in a testbed to validate the accuracy of energy consumption models and the correctness of the proposed traffic engineering algorithm.

Résumé :
Processes of convergence strongly influence the development of several industries and modern technologies as the example of convergence of the computer and telecommunication industry into one sector of information and communications technology (ICT) shows. These convergences are a substantial uncertainty for established companies in both established areas. Ubiquitous healthcare is a current trend in health technology which might be the expression of such a convergence. Therefore, the question whether this trend is an expression of an overall industry convergence between the ICT and the health sector is investigated in this study. Publication and patent data-based analyses are carried out for that purpose. An industry/technology sector classification as well as an IPC-co-classification analysis reveal clear signs of convergence between the ICT and health sector on the scientific and technology level. The results are critically discussed and theoretical and practical implications are given.

Résumé :
Society 5.0 represents an opportunity to transform the economy and create a digital society with the goal of long-term sustainable development and economic growth. There is a growing importance of boosting ICT as an effective and efficient means of achieving this transformation, and Target 9c of the UN Sustainable Development Goals is to ‘Significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries’. Mobile telecommunication systems have become the most effective and convenient means of communicating in the world, and as such, they are revolutionizing business operations. Nigeria is the fastest growing telecommunication market in Africa, with approximately 298 million subscribers accommodated by over 53,000 base transceiver stations (BTSs) which are largely concentrated in urban areas. As a result of increasing subscribers, all mobile network service providers in Nigeria are building new BTSs, often without considering existing infrastructure. This has led to a proliferation of masts, defacing the environment and causing unnecessary environmental pollution as BTSs are largely powered by diesel generators. It is therefore becoming paramount for the telecommunication regulatory body in Nigeria to enforce principles of infrastructure sharing and the colocation of sites for all mobile network service provider BTSs to improve network availability, reliability, scalability, customer satisfaction and sustainability. This paper argues, through the development of ICT tools and their application to a case study, that infrastructure sharing and colocation of sites is not only feasible if supported correctly but also offers the potential to reduce operational and capital expenditure, reduce the number of BTSs required for the rapidly growing mobile telecoms industry in Nigeria and in doing so reduce environmental pollution.

Résumé :
Forward converters have been broadly used in the power supply industry due to their simplicity, worthy efficiency, and low cost. A novel prototype soft-switched zero-voltage and zero-current ZVZC PWM DC-DC power converter with low voltage/current stresses is introduced for telecommunication power feeding in this paper. A new two-switch interleaved forward converter circuit is introduced to minimalize current circulation with no supplementary auxiliary snubber circuits. This converter circuit includes some outstanding benefits such as reduced components, improved efficiency, high power density and economic circuit configurations for high power conditioning applications. The simple operation principle is demonstrated on the basis of steady-state analysis. Furthermore, the effective feasibility of the proposed circuit topology is evaluated and verified practically for a 500 W–100 kHz prototype breadboard. The operation principle and steady-state characteristics are demonstrated from a theoretical point of view. To verify the practical effectiveness of the proposed power converter, a 500 W–100 kHz prototype converter using ultrafast IGBTs is implemented for a distributed telecommunication energy plant. The studied soft-switching converter is evaluated in comparison with the previously-proposed PWM converters in terms of voltage, current stresses, and operating efficiency.

Résumé :
The Industry 4.0 initiative has been showing the way for industrial production to optimize operations based on collecting, processing, and sharing data. There are new requirements on the production floor: flexible but ultra-reliable, low latency wireless communications through interoperable systems can share data. Further challenges of data sharing and storage arise when diverse systems come into play at the Manufacturing Operations Management and Business Planning & Logistics levels. The emerging complex cyber-physical systems of systems need to be engineered with care. Regarding industrial requirements, the telecommunication industry has many similarities to production—including ultra-reliability, high complexity, and having humans “in-the-loop”. The current paper aims to provide an overview of converging telco-grade solutions that can be successfully applied in the wide sense of industrial production. These toolsets range from model-driven engineering through system interoperability frameworks, 5G- and 6G-supported manufacturing, and the telco-cloud to speech recognition in noisy environments.

Résumé :
This study proposes a research framework to empirically examine the relationships among environmental turbulence, socio-technical risk factors, project risk, and project performance for a New Product Development (NPD) project team in the telecommunications industry. In addition, the moderating effect of communication on the relationship between project risk and project performance is also analyzed. The samples were collected from NPD team projects in 17 of Taiwan's telecommunication public firms. Our results indicate a positive relationship between: (1) environmental turbulence and social-related risks, (2) social-related risks and technical-related risks, (3) socio-technical related risks and project risks, and (4) a strong negative relationship between project risks and project performance. Meanwhile, although statistically insignificant, the moderating effect of communication could weaken the relationship between project risk and project performance.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend game analysis to explore decision-making mechanisms for promoting a specific type of products, low energy consumption for individual one while the total energy consumption is huge due to the high quantity of sales, that is, low for individual and high for total (LIHT) in terms of energy consumption. Design/methodology/approach Game models are developed to compare decisions of optimal prices for newly developed and environmentally friendly (NDEF) and regular products as well as associated sales quantity, profits, carbon emissions under different governmental policies, along with a case of low energy-intensive broadband terminal products in the Chinese telecommunication industry under the carbon tax and subsidy policies. Findings For both NDEF and regular products, optimal prices decrease under the subsidy policy while both increase under the tax policy. Manufacturers’ decision of optimal prices is highly relevant with unit carbon tax/subsidy and the consumers’ preference. Both the tax and subsidy policies can improve consumption of NDEF products while the subsidy policy can be more effective at the current initial stage. Research limitations/implications This paper provides decision support for manufacturers to promote sustainable consumption of LIHT products. Research ideas on models development and solutions for optimal prices can be applied to other LIHT products. Practical implications The results provide insights for governments on how to effectively evaluate and motivate sustainable consumption for LIHT products. Originality/value This paper first explores how to motivate sustainable consumption of LIHT products by developing models, examining effectiveness of potential governmental policies as well as associated carbon emissions.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine whether policies and procedures, one of the fundamental elements in the internal control environment, are adequate and effective in preventing fraud and unethical practices committed by employees of a company. In addition, this study attempts to assess the awareness and understanding of employees on the existence of relevant company policies and standard operating procedures for internal fraud and misconduct deterrence. Design/methodology/approach Five cases from one Malaysian telecommunication company were randomly selected as a case study. Content analyses were conducted on actual cases of internal fraud and wrongdoings that were investigated and the enforcement that was discharged by the company. Findings This study found that the company has sufficient policies and standard operating procedures to curb internal fraud and wrongdoing. However, they are ineffective and malfunction when responsible personnel violate or override the policies and procedures, irrespective of whether this is caused by carelessness, poor knowledge or clear intention to act dishonestly. Research limitations implications This study was conducted on only one company with a limited number of investigated fraud cases. Access to higher number of fraud cases, particularly those that involved large amount of losses and considered as high-profile cases, were denied because of confidentiality. Practical implications The study found that weak compliance to internal controls provides opportunities for fraud to occur, consistent with the fraud triangle theory. Fraud, committed both outside and inside an organization, can be considered as a worrying problem in the organization because of its severe impact on the reputation and bottom line figures of the company. The study provides important information to management to strengthen their compliance with the internal control system generally and policies and procedures particularly. Originality/value This study is original, as it focuses on the actual fraud cases that occur in the telecommunication industry, which is under-researched in fraud literature, particularly in developing markets such as Malaysia. Prior empirical research on fraud and unethical practices has concentrated on factors that contribute to fraud and the financial and non-financial impacts of fraud in an organization.

Résumé :
The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently received considerable interest from both academia and industry that are working on technologies to develop the future Internet. It is a joint and complex discipline that requires synergetic efforts from several communities such as telecommunication industry, device manufacturers, semantic Web, and informatics and engineering. Much of the IoT initiative is supported by the capabilities of manufacturing low-cost and energy-efficient hardware for devices with communication capacities, the maturity of wireless sensor network technologies, and the interests in integrating the physical and cyber worlds. However, the heterogeneity of the “Things” makes interoperability among them a challenging problem, which prevents generic solutions from being adopted on a global scale. Furthermore, the volume, velocity and volatility of the IoT data impose significant challenges to existing information systems. Semantic technologies based on machine-interpretable representation formalism have shown promise for describing objects, sharing and integrating information, and inferring new knowledge together with other intelligent processing techniques. However, the dynamic and resource-constrained nature of the IoT requires special design considerations to be taken into account to effectively apply the semantic technologies on the real world data. In this article the authors review some of the recent developments on applying the semantic technologies to IoT.
