Résumé :
The telecommunication industry is the leading industry in big data trends as this industry has the most capable infrastructure for big data. However, the adoption of big data in telecommunication services also raises important security and privacy challenges due to the high volume, velocity, and variety of big data characteristics. To address the issue, this study shed light on the security and privacy challenges of big data adoption in the telecommunication industry. This study focuses on investigating the security and privacy challenges for data users in telecommunication services from the lens of the TOE framework and examines the mitigation strategies to address the privacy and security challenges. This study is conducted using qualitative methodology. From the perspectives of data users (telecommunication providers), it could be concluded that data management, data privacy, data compliance, and regulatory orchestration challenges are the most pressing concerns in big data adoption. This study offers contributions in presenting a thematic classification of security and privacy challenges and their mitigation strategies for big data adoption in the telecommunication industry. The thematic classification highlights potential gaps for future research in the big data security domain. This study is significant in that it provides empirical evidence for the perspectives of telecommunication data users in addressing privacy and security issues that are related to big data adoption.

Résumé :
This research sought to examine the strategic planning practice as tool for performance in the telecommunication companies. Strategic planning for that reason offers a much-needed basis on which telecommunication companies can grow and evaluate its success against failures and establish boundaries for efficient decision-making. The research further assessed the level of influence of legal and regulatory framework as a moderating factor on the performance of Telecommunication industry in Rwanda. This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative data as well as applied a descriptive survey design. The study population included the 42 Top and middle level, managers of mobile phone operator companies in Rwanda which comprised of MTN and Airtel company Headquarter and different branches within Kigali City. The data collection instruments were pre-tested using the Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis of dimensions reductions to determine the validity and reliability of the tests. The data collected was analyzed and presented using tables, by help of the SPSS statistical Package for Social Science. The results on, reliability test, descriptive statistics, demographic information of respondents, correlation analysis, normality test, heteroskedasticity test, factor analysis and regression results were established on all the variables of strategic planning, plus the intervening variable of the legal and regulatory framework. Notably, the correlation results revealed that Strategic Planning had a positive and significant. The results revealed that Strategic Planning has a positive and significant moderate relationship with Performance of Telecommunication industry. The results on linearity test for strategic planning and performance of the telecommunication industry since the level of linear association was found to be 0.953 which was also positive and statistically significant. Similarly, the null hypothesis Strategic Planning and performance of the telecommunications industry were subjected to the hypothesis to determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis and the results showed a positive and significant association between Strategic Planning and Performance of Telecommunication industry (β = 0.953, ρ< .05). Therefore, the hypothesis was rejected. Thus, as the Performance of Telecommunication industry increased, the strategic planning too increased. It can therefore be concluded that, the companies benefited tremendously when the strategic planning was taken into account for the efficient performance of the telecommunication industry in Rwanda.

Résumé :
The study examines the role of intellectual capital (IC) management in explaining the mismatch between performances of the Nigerian telecommunications industry’s annual growth rate (16.3%) and that of the nation’s economic average growth rate (4.3%) over the last two decades (1986–2010). Through a previously published research instrument, data were collected from 320 managers from 29 telecommunication companies using stratified random sampling technique. The major findings of the study as highlighted by the regression analysis (Partial Least Square techniques) of the data, revealed that the sampled telecommunication companies lack the organisational know-how and communication aptitude to leverage their embedded organisational knowledge (Structural capital) into business performance ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) notwithstanding their knowledge creation and retention strategies. Hence, Knowledge utilisation rather than knowledge creation appears the main challenge of the industry which has made it perform below expectation despite the industry’s tremendous infrastructural investment. The study thereby recommends that policy makers and telecommunication managers should begin to analyse the economic impact and contribution of IC in the sector as a means of boosting the sector’s corporate business performance in the overall aim of accelerating the nation’s economic development. Moreover, as a way of addressing this obvious managerial inadequacy, the study recommends the position of Chief Knowledge Officer to be saddled with responsibility of effectively leveraging knowledge generated in the industry for optimum organisational performance and national development.

Résumé :
With the rising growth of the telecommunication industry, the customer churn problem has grown in significance as well. One of the most critical challenges in the data and voice telecommunication service industry is retaining customers, thus reducing customer churn by increasing customer satisfaction. Telecom companies have depended on historical customer data to measure customer churn. However, historical data does not reveal current customer satisfaction or future likeliness to switch between telecom companies. The related research reveals that many studies have focused on developing churner prediction models based on historical data. These models face delay issues and lack timelines for targeting customers in real-time. In addition, these models lack the ability to tap into Arabic language social media for real-time analysis. As a result, the design of a customer churn model based on real-time analytics is needed. Therefore, this study offers a new approach to using social media mining to predict customer churn in the telecommunication field. This represents the first work using Arabic Twitter mining to predict churn in Saudi Telecom companies. The newly proposed method proved its efficiency based on various standard metrics and based on a comparison with the ground-truth actual outcomes provided by a telecom company.

Résumé :
Understanding knowledge management is critical for organisations because the persons concerned are not trained adequately to access, use and benefit from this knowledge effectively. The main problem is that the workers themselves do not understand how to organize and manage a huge amount of knowledge capital has, and the importance of this to improve organizational performance. This research is based on understanding the importance of knowledge management practices and policies within an organisation. This is based on research to understand the importance of knowledge management practices and policies within the organization. This research focuses on building a framework based on the knowledge of social issues within the organization and its impact on business. This research will explore strategies that can be used for organizations in order to integrate this knowledge into their business social benefit from social ontology. To enable this framework, a business organization knowledge management integrated social ontology framework (BOKMISOf) was built with a focus on telecommunications industry in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states. In order to understand the social aspects of an organisation, a social ontology was developed which was incorporated into the knowledge management framework. The BOKMISO framework was evaluated with case studies, within telecommunication companies, in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states. The employees of these companies contributed in data collection activity via questionnaire, whereas the managers of these companies contributed via semi-structured interview. Results that were gathered from data collection showed that BOKMISO framework was valid, appropriate, useful and added value to an organisation. Further work can be done to apply the BOKMISOf within other telecommunications companies in Saudi Arabia.

Résumé :
Although the Internet is the dominant broadband network, it still has a fundamental shortcoming in traffic management that does not properly support efficient use of resources together with differentiated quality of service for mixed traffic types. Even though a number of mechanisms have been proposed under key approaches of resource adaptation, resource reservation, and resource pricing, this problem remains unsolved to date because of its complexity and the way it relates to so many considerations of engineering and economics, and the diverse range of services desired by users. Hence it is considered difficult to devise a perfect mechanism that can universally solve this problem. In this respect, this dissertation contributes to insights into potential combinations and trade-offs of key approaches above in some efficient manner for managing traffic and scarce resources in the Internet. The first part of this work considers the combination of relaxed resource reservation and resource pricing schemes for handling the unfair bandwidth distribution problem in soft-bandwidth guarantee services of the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) Internet. We show that this unfairness problem can be handled using a network-user cooperative approach that addresses both individual user satisfaction and global optimization. We propose to add a mechanism based on price-based feedback signaling to DiffServ-capable routers providing Assured Forwarding (AF) Service so that they can offer per-flow signaling. This still allows them to work at an aggregate traffic level, hence the scalability feature of the DiffServ network can be retained. Our proposed mechanism allows the network to offer reliable service assurances via a distributed optimization algorithm, without introducing special protocols or requiring routers to have access of individual user requirements. Moreover, it can provide incentives for users to cooperate so that optimum performance can be accomplished. This approach has broad applicability and is relevant to all types of assured service classes. The second part of this work considers the combination of a specific resource pricing scheme based on a distributed optimization algorithm and multimedia adaptation schemes. Such a capability has not been available because most utility functions of multimedia applications do not meet the concavity constraints required by optimization algorithm. We proposed to overcome this limitation by redefining user utility functions into equivalent discrete forms and using combinatorial (discrete) optimization so that interfacing the resource-pricing scheme can be done in a normal way. However, to obtain feasible solutions in a scalable manner, an agent is included into the scheme for solving the combinatorial (discrete) optimization on behalf of a small group of users. In return, all users belonging to this group can benefit from social welfare maximization of their utilities over a network resource constraint. The last part of this work considers the combination of relaxed resource reservation and resource pricing schemes to enable a proper charging scheme for adaptive applications in the DiffServ Internet. We provide an optimization formulation of the problems of revenue and social welfare maximization, applied at a service provider (SP) who gives access to the DiffServ Internet. In this scheme, resources are provisioned per QoS-oriented class in a long time scale (service level agreement (SLA) duration), then priced based on user demand in the short time scale. We also show that the proposed charging scheme can provide feedback and incentives for users to use the network resource optimally via the standard packet marking, hence eliminating the need for specific pricing protocol. All of the proposals in this work can be used together, solving these key problems as a coordinated whole, and all use readily available network mechanisms.

Résumé :
It is not surprising that researchers in network technology are utilizing ideas from the field of economics since it provides the conceptual understanding of underlying constructs such as usage and resource allocation. Proper resource allocation plays a key role in improving network performance. There are two primary approaches to economic resource allocation: quantity limits and pricing. Economic approaches can provide principles in situations and provide valuable guidelines and analysis. A concerted effort is needed from academia, the computer industry, network service providers, and businesses involved in electronic commerce to design new mechanisms for network operations that will be suitable for a new generation network applications. This chapter explores this economic approach for network management.

Résumé :
Future's environments will be sensitive and responsive to the presence of people to support them carrying out their everyday life activities, tasks and rituals, in an easy and natural way. Such interactive spaces will use the information and communication technologies to bring the computation into the physical world in order to enhance ordinary activities of their users. Human-computer interaction (HCI) and information retrieval (IR) fields have both developed innovative techniques to address the challenge of navigating complex information spaces, but their insights have often failed to cross-disciplinary borders. Human-computer information retrieval (HCIR) has emerged in academic research and industry practice to bring together research in the fields of IR and HCI, in order to create new kinds of search systems that depend on continuous human control of the search process. HCIR is the study of information retrieval techniques that bring human intelligence into the search process. This chapter will describe search-based interaction techniques using two human-computer interaction information retrieval systems: (1) a speech-based spoken multimedia retrieval system that can be used to present relevant video-podcast (vodcast) footage in response to spontaneous speech and conversations during daily life activities, and (2) a novel shape retrieval technique that allows 3D modeling of indoor/outdoor environments using multi-view sketch input from a mobile device.

Résumé :
Information Technology is one of the most rapidly developing areas in the technological world. In fact, the classical information technology that has been based on computer technology is now very quickly converging with telecommunication. Wireless networking, especially mobile telecommunications, has been one of the leading areas in business and technology during the last five years. The state-of-the art in mobile telecommunication has reached a point, where new products are introduced within a cycle of one year. The next big step shall be the introduction of wireless multimedia services through next generation wireless networks. The standardization of wireless multimedia systems is a very difficult task, as the standards shall include the crucial points in the two domains, telecommunications and information technology. It is becoming more and more difficult to recruit enough expertise for the technical committees to produce high quality standards in the converging information technology and telecommunication market domain. In this chapter, we will be using this domain as an example for the standardization difficulties of future. The reasons have to be strong for initiating a standardization process, especially concerning industry, due to the fact that it is rather expensive to produce new and extensive standards. It has been estimated that the expenses of developing a single part of the Ethernet standards amount to approx. $10,000,000 (Spring & Weiss, 1994). The main development costs arise from the time, travel and salaries of the committee members. The standardization expenses are usually prohibitive for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). If the standardization organizations and committees can not guarantee that the investments done towards standardization are worthwhile we will have lots of problems in the future.

Sydney’s high knowledge industry concentration is seen as the product of the city’s commercial leadership, its high share of transnational corporations associated with Sydney’s global economy role, and its high proportion of skilled immigration. Such factors have resulted in a knowledge sector that is concentrated around central and near northern Sydney, and in the formation of several distinct clusters of knowledge-based industries. Case studies of the information technology and telecommunication industry and the multimedia industry suggest that Sydney’s concentration of corporate headquarters has been a key driver of growth in these industries, while the presence of a large pool of computer-based skills has stimulated and fed multimedia development. Metropolitan planning strategies have lacked firm principles for the development of knowledge-based industries. Instead, planning for these industries focused on a series of ad hoc place-specific initiatives that have been much less significant than market forces in supporting knowledge-based development in Sydney.

Résumé :
The last two decades, after the telecommunication and computer technology convergence, the world of telecommunication applications has changed dramatically. The traffic needs of the customers have moved from circuit switched applications towards packet switched applications (Cox, 1995). Data traffic, with the characteristics of information transmission in the form of packets and the bursty flow characteristics rather than constant rate, nowadays accounts for slightly more than 60% of the traffic that is transmitted over the backbone telecommunication networks (Esmailzadeh, Nakagawa, & Jones, 2003). In addition to data traffic, multimedia applications like video calls, IP TV, and multimedia messaging traffic (variable rate with real time constraints) was made possible by low cost video digitizing equipment (Houssos, Alonistioti, Merakos, Mohyeldin, Dillinger, Fahrmair, & Schoenmakers, 2003). Different Radio Access Technology (RAT) networks offer different services to their subscribers. This is a big problem for the multimedia industry since it poses certain constraints to the subscribers regarding specific technology handsets. The ideal solution might be a unified handset with a unified service subscriber identity module (SIM) card (Louvros & Iossifides, 2004). This handset should be able to access the service by any radio access network, like Global System Mobile (GSM) (Siegmund, Redl, Weber, & Oliphant, 1995), General Packet Radio System (GPRS), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), and IEEE802.11 standard (WiFi or WLAN) towards a common core platform. In order to achieve such a unification, the service request should be seamless to the radio access technology network and the core platform should support certain protocols to provide again seamless to the user access to the requested service. Such a platform is already designed and is known as the soft-switch solution. The idea behind the soft-switch solution is the layering of the core network management procedures (mobility management, call control, session management, charging) in such a way that the operator can support all requests as a unified routing process. Moreover the operator can deploy its core switch and transmission network based on a common backbone, designed according to the 3GPP standards on IP or ATM infrastructure, and also to be able to accommodate in the future any new radio access technology network simply and without any serious rearrangement of the existing backbone, thus eliminating cost implementation. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology is proposed by the telecommunication industry to accommodate multiple traffic types (packet and voice) in a high speed wire-line backbone network. Briefly, ATM is based on very fast (on the order of 2.5 Gbits/sec or higher (Q.2931 ATM Network Signaling Specification, ITU)) packet switching technology with 53 byte long packets called cells being transmitted through wireline networks running usually on fiber optical equipment (Louvros, Karaboulas, Iossifides, & Kotsopoulos, 2003).

Résumé :
In the past few years, technology breakthroughs have made Augmented Reality (AR) applications more user friendly and accessible than ever. New AR technologies show great promise and potential to influence and enhance the activities related to a wide range of areas, such as education, military industry, entertainment, sports or medicine and surgical training. In complementarity with Virtual Reality, AR is now considered to be the future of human-computer interaction, by revolutionizing the way information is presented and transforming the surroundings into one broad user interface. In particular, AR systems will soon play an important role in communication and collaboration, creating innovative collaborative environments that allow multiple users to interact simultaneously. Hybrid interfaces that combine AR technology with existing telecommunication techniques provide immense power and freedom in multi-participant settings where the physical and virtual worlds blend perfectly and form a mixed reality. Their main objectives are to improve the cooperation through augmented face-to-face interactions, to enrich the remote collaboration by virtually co-locating the participants and to augment physical spaces with new modalities of interaction between people. Using latest AR technologies, applications can provide unique collaborative experiences for all domains, supporting new means of communication and socialization and making working together very effective. This paper aims to present a survey on collaborative augmented reality and its potential in various contexts. It thoroughly reviews existing collaborative AR systems in areas like those mentioned above, identifying their accomplishments as well as limitations, and highlighting the most recent discoveries and future trends in the field.
