Résumé :
AbstractWe prove a generalized version of Kazhdan’s theorem for canonical forms on Riemann surfaces. In the classical version, one starts with an ascending sequence {\{S_{n}\rightarrow S\}} of finite Galois covers of a hyperbolic Riemann surface S, converging to the universal cover. The theorem states that the sequence of forms on S inherited from the canonical forms on {S_{n}}’s converges uniformly to (a multiple of) the hyperbolic form. We prove a generalized version of this theorem, where the universal cover is replaced with any infinite Galois cover. Along the way, we also prove a Gauss–Bonnet-type theorem in the context of arbitrary infinite Galois covers.

Abstract The fundamental group of Fermat and generalized Fermat curves is computed. These curves are Galois ramified covers of the projective line with abelian Galois groups H. We provide a unified study of the action of both cover Galois group H and the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on the pro-$\ell$ homology of the curves in study. Also the relation to the pro-$\ell$ Burau representation is investigated.

Résumé :
This paper was motivated by a recent paper by Krumm and Pollack ([Twists of hyperelliptic curves by integers in progressions modulo [Formula: see text], preprint (2018); https://arXiv.org/abs/1807.00972] ) investigating modulo-[Formula: see text] behavior of quadratic twists with rational points of a given hyperelliptic curve, conditional on the abc-conjecture. We extend those results to twisted Galois covers with arbitrary Galois groups. The main point of this generalization is to interpret those results as statements about the sets of specializations of a given Galois cover under restrictions on the discriminant. In particular, we make a connection with existing heuristics about the distribution of discriminants of Galois extensions such as the Malle conjecture: our results show in a precise sense the non-existence of “local obstructions” to such heuristics, in many cases essentially only under the assumption that [Formula: see text] occurs as the Galois group of a Galois cover defined over [Formula: see text]. This complements and generalizes a similar result in the direction of the Malle conjecture by Dèbes ([On the Malle conjecture and the self-twisted cover, Israel J. Math. 218(1) (2017) 101–131]).

This is the final paper in a series of four, concerning the surface 𝕋 × 𝕋 embedded in ℂℙ8, where 𝕋 is the one-dimensional torus. In this paper we compute the fundamental group of the Galois cover of the surface with respect to a generic projection onto ℂℙ2, and show that it is nilpotent of class 3. This is the first time such a group is presented as the fundamental group of a Galois cover of a surface.

This paper is the second in a series of papers concerning Hirzebruch surfaces. In the first paper in this series, the fundamental group of Galois covers of Hirzebruch surfaces Fk(a, b), where a, b are relatively prime, was shown to be trivial. For the general case, the conjecture stated that the fundamental group is [Formula: see text] where c = gcd (a, b) and n = 2ab + kb2. In this paper, we degenerate the Hirzebruch surface F1(2, 2), compute the braid monodromy factorization of the branch curve in ℂ2, and verify that, in this case, the conjecture holds: the fundamental group of the Galois cover of F1(2, 2) with respect to a generic projection is isomorphic to [Formula: see text].

AbstractForpa prime, ap-typical cover of a connected scheme on whichp= 0 is a finite étale cover whose monodromy group (i.e.,the Galois group of its normal closure) is ap-group. The geometry of such covers exhibits some unexpectedly pleasant behaviors; building on work of Katz, we demonstrate some of these. These include a criterion for when a morphism induces an isomorphism of thep-typical quotients of the étale fundamental groups, and a decomposition theorem forp-typical covers of polynomial rings over an algebraically closed field.

AbstractThe splitting number of a plane irreducible curve for a Galois cover is effective in distinguishing the embedded topology of plane curves. In this paper, we define the connected number of a plane curve (possibly reducible) for a Galois cover, which is similar to the splitting number. By using the connected number, we distinguish the embedded topology of Artal arrangements of degree b ≥ 4, where an Artal arrangement of degree b is a plane curve consisting of one smooth curve of degree b and three of its total inflectional tangents.

Let X, Y be smooth complex projective varieties of dimension n≥2 and let f: Y→X be a totally ramified abelian cover. Assume that the components of the branch divisor of f are ample. Then the map f*: π1(Y)→π1(X) is surjective and gives rise to a central extension: [Formula: see text] where K is a finite group. Here we show how the kernel K and the cohomology class c(f) ∈ H2(π1(X), K) of (1) can be computed in terms of the Chern classes of the components of the branch divisor of f and of the eigensheaves of [Formula: see text] under the action of the Galois group. Using this result, for any integer m>0, we construct m varieties X1,…, Xm no two of which are homeomorphic, even though they have the same numerical invariants and they are realized as covers of the same projective variety X with the same Galois group, branch locus and inertia subgroups.

In this thesis we study Shimura subvarieties in the moduli space of complex abelian varieties. These subvarieties arise from families of Galois covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve such that the quotient of the base curve by the group is isomorphic to the projective line. We give a criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a special subvariety and, using computer algebra, we build several Shimura subvarieties contained in the Prym loci.

In this thesis we consider the setting where R is a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0, p) where p > 0 is prime. Let (p, ..., p) denote either the group Z/pZ x ... x Z/pZ or the product of rank p group schemes. Given a degree p Galois cover between R-curves, it is understood when the cover has the structure of a torsor under a finite flat group scheme of rank p. We investigate torsors under group schemes of type (p, ..., p) and establish criteria for their existence. We treat the boundary of the formal fibre and extend our knowledge of the conductor and degree of the different in degree p to the (p, p) setting. We also take the opportunity to explain how this can be naturally extended to the general (p, ..., p) case. Finally, we generalise a local vanishing cycles formula for curves known in the degree p case to Galois groups of type (p, p), relating the genus of two points in terms of just the cover's ramification data and the conductors acting at the boundaries.

In this thesis, we study the interplay between positive and zero characteristic. In a first instance, we deal with the local lifting problem of lifting actions of curves. We show necessary conditions for the existence of liftings of some actions of Z/pZ x Z/pZ. Then, for an action of a general finite group, we study the associated Hurwitz tree, showing that every Hurwitz tree has a canonical metric embedding in the Berkovich closed unit disc, and that the Hurwitz data can be described analytically. In the last chapter, we define an analog of the Weil representation with coefficients in an integral domain, showing that such representation satisfies the same properties than in the case with complex coefficients

Résumé :
In attempting to solve the regular inverse Galois problem for arbitrary subfields K of C (particularly for K=Q), a very important result by Fried and Völklein reduces the existence of regular Galois extensions F|K(t) with Galois group G to the existence of K-rational points on components of certain moduli spaces for families of covers of the projective line, known as Hurwitz spaces. In some cases, the existence of rational points on Hurwitz spaces has been proven by theoretical criteria. In general, however, the question whether a given Hurwitz space has any rational point remains a very difficult problem. In concrete cases, it may be tackled by an explicit computation of a Hurwitz space and the corresponding family of covers. The aim of this work is to collect and expand on the various techniques that may be used to solve such computational problems and apply them to tackle several families of Galois theoretic interest. In particular, in Chapter 5, we compute explicit curve equations for Hurwitz spaces for certain families of \(M_{24}\) and \(M_{23}\). These are (to my knowledge) the first examples of explicitly computed Hurwitz spaces of such high genus. They might be used to realize \(M_{23}\) as a regular Galois group over Q if one manages to find suitable points on them. Apart from the calculation of explicit algebraic equations, we produce complex approximations for polynomials with genus zero ramification of several different ramification types in \(M_{24}\) and \(M_{23}\). These may be used as starting points for similar computations. The main motivation for these computations is the fact that \(M_{23}\) is currently the only remaining sporadic group that is not known to occur as a Galois group over Q. We also compute the first explicit polynomials with Galois groups \(G=P\Gamma L_3(4), PGL_3(4), PSL_3(4)\) and \(PSL_5(2)\) over Q(t). Special attention will be given to reality questions. As an application we compute the first examples of totally real polynomials with Galois groups \(PGL_2(11)\) and \(PSL_3(3)\) over Q. As a suggestion for further research, we describe an explicit algorithmic version of "Algebraic Patching", following the theory described e.g. by M. Jarden. This could be used to conquer some problems regarding families of covers of genus g>0. Finally, we present explicit Magma implementations for several of the most important algorithms involved in our computations

The present work is about a specific group of error detection and correction codes, the Reed-Solomon codes. Such codes are used in telecommunications applications (wire telephony, digital television, broadband wireless communications) and digital storage systems (optical, magnetic disks). The Reed Solomon codes are based on a specific category of numerical fields, called Galois Fields. The Work consists of the study of the properties of Galois fields and of the design of an codec for Reed Solomon codes. The design was implemented in hardware with the use of Verilog HDL language. The synthesis of the circuit targets Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Applications Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technologies. The design methodology for Intellectual Property Units for integrated circuits (IP cores) was used. According to that methodology the design is platform independent and consequently the implementation can be achieved with minimal or no changes in different technologies. The IP cores model is widely applied in Systems on Integrated Circuits (System on Chips).

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on representations of the fundamental group and the torsor of deformations. It considers the case of an affine scheme of a particular type, qualified also as small by Faltings. It introduces the notion of Dolbeault generalized representation and the companion notion of solvable Higgs module, and then constructs a natural equivalence between these two categories. It proves that this approach generalizes simultaneously Faltings' construction for small generalized representations and Hyodo's theory of p-adic variations of Hodge–Tate structures. The discussion covers the relevant notation and conventions, results on continuous cohomology of profinite groups, objects with group actions, logarithmic geometry lexicon, Faltings' almost purity theorem, Faltings extension, Galois cohomology, Fontaine p-adic infinitesimal thickenings, Higgs–Tate torsors and algebras, Dolbeault representations, and small representations. The chapter also describes the descent of small representations and applications and concludes with an analysis of Hodge–Tate representations.

Résumé :
What are plant galls and how are they caused? This book introduces the Australian native insects that induce galls on plants and the plant species that host them. It explores the ways the insects have adapted to living part of their lives in the confined spaces of galls, and describes the strategies employed by different insect groups to find a suitable site to induce a gall, obtain food, mate and escape the gall. Life in a Gall also looks at the predators, parasitoids, inquilines, kleptoparasites and micro-organisms that prey on gall-inducing insects and the ways the insects defend themselves from these enemies. It covers the problems gall-inducing insects can cause for agriculture, forestry and horticulture, and gives examples of several pest species. On the positive side, the book describes the essential services gall-inducing insects provide by pollinating figs, controlling invasive weeds and contributing to indigenous food. The final chapter provides tips for people who want to collect and study galls, and shows that answering many of the questions still surrounding gall-inducing insects is not restricted to professional scientists but can be achieved by diligent amateurs too.

Résumé :
The Amazon is a land of superlatives. The complex ecosystem covers an area about the size of the continental U.S. The Amazon River discharges 57 million gallons of water per second--in two hours, this would be enough to supply all of New York City’s 7.5 million residents with water for a year. Its flora and fauna are abundant. Approximately one of every four flowering plant species on earth resides in the Amazon. A single Amazonian river may contain more fish species than all the rivers in Europe combined. It is home to the world's largest anteater, armadillo, freshwater turtle, and spider, as well as the largest rodent (which weighs over 200 lbs.), catfish (250 lbs.), and alligator (more than half a ton). The rainforest, which contains approximately 390 billion trees, plays a vital role in stabilizing the global climate by absorbing massive amounts of carbon dioxide--or releasing it into the atmosphere if the trees are destroyed. Severe droughts in both Brazil and Southeast Asia have been linked to Amazonian deforestation, as have changing rainfall patterns in the U.S., Europe, and China. The Amazon also serves as home to millions of people. Approximately seventy tribes of isolated and uncontacted people are concentrated in the western Amazon, completely dependent on the land and river. These isolated groups have been described as the most marginalized peoples in the western hemisphere, with no voice in the decisions made about their futures and the fate of their forests. In this addition to the What Everyone Needs to Know® series, ecologist and conservation expert, Mark J. Plotkin, who has spent 40 years studying Amazonia, its peoples, flora, and fauna. The Amazon offers an engaging overview of this irreplaceable ecosystem and the challenges it faces.

Résumé :
This chapter covers a new stage in EU policy towards Mercosur and Latin America. This stage started with a new framework of policies within which agreements between the European Union and Latin American countries, including the Mercosur countries, were made. By explaining EU-Mercosur agreements within the general context of EU-LA relations it is possible to bring some clarity to the EU level of engagement with Mercosur in relative terms so it is neither over nor underestimated. In doing so it will show how EU-Mercosur relations were the most important ones within the EU-LA framework. As has been established before, the level of engagement will be explained by discussing two aspects of it, “ambition” and “commitment”. This chapter shows that there is a medium level of “ambition” and a high level of “commitment” which helps to explain the outcome of a medium level of engagement. In relation to this stage, in the literature it has been accepted that, in 1990, the EU’s means of dealing with Latin America changed (Aldecoa Luzarraga 1995; Bizzozero 1995; Laporte Galli 1996; Birochi 1999). Detailed explanations for this have not yet been offered. Some indicate that these changes were due to wider changes in the international arena. With the end of Cold War, the EU was given a chance to develop a global vision and a space in which to do it (Aldecoa Luzarraga 1995; Birochi 1999). The internal changes in the European Union, especially its increased integration, have also been mentioned in this regard (Aldecoa Luzarraga 1995).

Résumé :
This paper will cover a method for inline blending biodiesel and the initial testing of fuel blends for a Wartsila TM620, inline six cylinder, 4-stroke, 400 rpm, diesel engine generator set rated at 7.8MW. To facilitate this initial testing 6,000 gallons of Recycled Frying Oil Methyl Ester (RFO-ME) was delivered by ISO tank container from Oahu. The testing objective was to design a system that would facilitate emissions data collection for numerous blends, gain experience using the fuel, and to determine if nitrogen oxide emission levels would exceed our air permit. Engine performed well on all fuel blends, with a greater than expected increase in nitrogen oxide emissions, but within the limits of the air permit. Neat biodiesel (B100) resulted in an increased thermal efficiency when compared to #2 diesel. Inline blending is a safe effective method to control fuel blends.

Résumé :
Concerns over rising fuel prices, national security, and the environment have led to the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007, which established a mandate for the production of at least 36 billion gallons of biofuels in 2022, up to 15 billion gallons of which can come from traditional first-generation biofuels sources such as corn starch-based ethanol. One consequence of ramped-up biofuels production is the risk of additional soil runoff. This runoff, potentially laden with nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from fertilizers, can detrimentally impact water quality. Consequently, the water treatment sector might require additional energy to remove increased quantities of sediment and run-off from nutrients and pesticides in degraded water bodies downstream of agricultural land. At the same time, the cumulative effects of increased eutrophication in the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River Basins have already negatively impacted much of the aquatic life in the Louisiana-Texas continental shelf. A recent report by U.S. Geological Survey measured nitrogen loading in the Mississippi River basin as high as 7,761 metric tons per day, the highest recorded loading in the past three decades, 52% of which is attributed to loading from corn and soybean crops. Massive algae blooms that thrive in nutrient-rich water deplete the water of oxygen when they die, creating a hypoxic region. This hypoxic region, which currently covers a region the size of New Jersey, is considered to be the second-largest dead zone in the world as of 2007. As a result, the Gulf Hypoxia Action Plan of 2008 was established to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous loading by 45% in order to shrink the hypoxic region to 5,000 square kilometers. Thus, at a time when water quality priorities aim to decrease nitrogen and phosphorous loading in waterways, legislative targets are seeking to increase corn starch-based ethanol production to 15 billion gallons a year, and thereby potentially increase nitrogen loading in this region by 10–34% due to runoff. Consequently, the energy intensity for water treatment may have a two-fold challenge. Because water and wastewater treatment is already responsible for 4% of the nation’s electricity consumption, putting more stringent demands on this sector could put upward pressure on energy consumption. This analysis quantifies the impact that the mandated increase in ethanol production might have on the energy required for water treatment in the United States. It reports results from a first-order top-level analysis of the energy impacts of ethanol. The results indicate that the increased production corn-starch based ethanol in the United States is not likely to increase the energy consumed during surface water treatment, but might cause significant increases in the energy consumed during groundwater treatment.
