Texte intégralThe present study aims to analyze the representations of future in four science fiction movies launched at random during the past thirty years. Blade Runner,by Ridley Scott, Artificial Intelligence, by Steven Spilberg, Idiocracy, by Mike Judge and Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón, compose our selected corpus for discussion and dialogue. For that purpose, we some concepts have been borrowed as Memory of Future, Dialogism and Intertextuality. The first science fiction film placed in the future we have ever seen was Terminator and the war between Humans and Machines. The child´s innocence made us count the days for the fatidic 1997, but there was no background to feel the film was reconstructing the present of that time, the Reagan era and his technological pyrotechnics war. If each era represents the future according to its own contradictions, in these movies the dialogues are marked above all by political, ideological and even existential ruptures. On the selected movies the world is always in transformation, reflecting the contexts of their times. Another goal of this thesis is to reflect upon the transposition process of literary tradition texts to the motion pictures language aiming the work production to the great audience via movie- theaters and television. At last there is an intent to contribute to the language and cultural studies, applied to the science fiction movies, and leave something relevant about the filmic representations of the future presented on movie-theaters screens.

______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The following study pretends to analyze the representations of future within two science fiction movies released in the year of 1968: 2001 - A Space Odissey, and Planet of the Apes. To do so, presents some concepts, such as Expectation Horizon, diegetic universe, representation, and others. Beyond analyzing each of the films in the cultural and socio-politic context, in the late 60`s, seeking to comprehend meanings and directions within the cinematic narrative, this research also lingers on the ways of appropriation; witch means the ways that where seen, in the press, their release, particularly in Rio de Janeiro’s criticism. If each epoch represents the future in accordance with its own contradictions, in 1968 this projection is mainly marked by breakage: social, ideological, existential. In both 2001 and Planet of the Apes the world is changing, reflecting its own epoch context. Finally, I pretend to contribute to the cultural studies related to the science fiction cinema and say something weighty about the representations of future at the movies in 1968.

Texte intégrals mind and supports a currently existing ideology at the same time. The science fiction genre extrapolates and speculates about future which results in a new world: Aliens, androids or clones become participants of this world, intergalactic federations regulate diplomatic relationships or natural disasters endanger the whole humankind. The indispensable factor in every case is that new objects surround the future. They are extrapolated or speculated as well from the objects of today in order to fit to and satisfy the needs of the future world of the science fiction film. The ideas about the future presented in the film are supported by the material existence of these future objects. This study demonstrates the ideas and ideologies in respect to future in the science fiction cinema and investigates how the future objects contribute to constructing them.

The research has emerged from the concern about technologies that fascinate people due to their eases and possibilities and that also frighten because of the overlooked practices and knowledge that preceded them. Does the novelty replace what comes previously or simply overlap it? What does one gain and what does one lose in this process? Among several examples, I focused on a technological transition and a professional category that symbolized this lack of communication between the new and what precedes it; they mirrored each other. The film-to-digital transition in the cinema was also the projectionist - IT technician transition. What other transitions exist within this one? From film to digital. From the 35mm projector to the digital projector. From the projectionist to the IT technician. From the analog to the digital. From the photochemical film to the computer. From the touch to the virtual. From the physics and chemistry to the mathematics. The research has aimed to understand the film-to-digital transition from the point of view of the cinema projectionist. For that, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three professionals in the city of São Paulo, with similar years of experience and involvement with cinema, similar belonging and affection feelings. In addition, the narratives of two other professionals who worked in the 1950s have been added. These interviews were transcribed in full, sequentially organized in order to identify the themes and later analyzed through thematic maps. The results of the analysis were presented in a narrative form, composed by the direct inscription of the interviews, historical passages about the cinema and testimonies of other professionals of the area, as well as of intellectuals who dialogue with the research proposal. These different points of view have been structured in a narrative form in this dissertation, as a conversation. The research has been anchored in the constructivist approach of discursive practices and production of meanings in everyday life. The analysis pointed out to the intrinsic relationship between death and life in technology and in professional relationships, with emphasis on the importance of registration and of cultural memory

Texte intégralThe present dissertation is motivated by a search for principles to integrate in the professional practice of architecture, having cinema as a starting point, an art with the capacity to present living visions of conceptions of the future, on which these considerations fall.Architecture has always a temporal component in mind; it can be inspired, relate to and learn from the past and the present, but the product of its exercise will always be destined for the future. Recognizing that we are currently experiencing a time of wide-ranging concerns about environmental, social and political issues, these are having an interdisciplinary impact that also covers architecture. The same questions are at the basis of the conceptions of the future by cinema, which in this work are sought as foundations of thought to be brought back to the discipline of architecture. It is proposed to recognize notions and real problems of the present, through the analysis of their extrapolation by cinema, a medium in which this broad representation is possible in a unique way, demonstrating at the same time that these conceptions are not the product of abstract inspirations, but of well-founded basis. In this way, we reflect on the concepts behind these visions of the future, whose repetition in several works demonstrates its strength and represents the presence of these concerns in the minds of society. This work intends to highlight the role that these concerns can play in the practice of architecture and in its permanent critical reflection. Thus, it is proposed that the learning, creativity and awareness of architectural practice will be more complete when the temporal component of the future is added to them, seeking a greater awareness of the problems that affect not only today, but also tomorrow. The objective is summarized in the research question:Starting from creative cinematographic conceptions that envision the future, what themes and issues of its basis affect architecture? How should architecture be rethought considering these issues?

This thesis proposes a study of the Representations of the Future of the City and Dwelling, through Cinema. It’s based on different utopian visions that have influenced the transformation of society, consequently the city and dwellings, throughout the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Cinema appears as a manifestation of the technological development of the Industrial Revolution and has become the paradigm of modernization, going through different processes of transformation associated to the development of civilization and technology. Bearing in mind the link between city and dwelling, the architectural visions projected in films that conjecture the future will be analyzed, turning architecture into protagonist. Three films from different periods will be analyzed, having a text by an Architect as a reference, that is believed to correspond to the theme of the film. The first chapter Things to Come, produced by H. G. Wells, in 1936, addresses an positivist vision of progress influenced by the evolution of machinery during the Industrial Revolution, focusing on concepts of transparency and immateriality. It is based on the article “Ineffable Space” by Le Corbusier. The second chapter, THX 1138, produced by George Lucas, in 1971, displays the control made by technology, where architecture is presented in an interiorized logic. Several architects and theorists start to reconsider the Modern Architecture ideals, expanding the perception of what Architecture represents, supported by David Greene’s poem “The love is gone”. The last chapter scrutinizes Spike Jonze’s movie Her, from 2013, which features a society governed by technology, which transformed the city and the dwelling in generic and characterless spaces. It’s supported by Rem Koolhaas text “Generic City”.

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of science fiction films whose main or secondary characters are automatic persons, meaning characters that are constituted partial or completely by mechanical parts, such as robots, androids, cyborgs, computers with artificial intelligence and post-human forms. Beginning with the relation between cinema and techno-science, this dissertation looks to contribute towards a historic, cultural, social and aesthetic evaluation of the humanity of the future. As such, the present work proposes the analysis of twenty-three pictures ranging from the early 20th century up until the most recent cinematographic productions, having as its main goal the construction of a panoramic view of automatic characters, focusing on their relevance to the history of the genre, as well as the identification of narrative and aesthetic principles. Seeing as this is a genre of great significance as a vector for the contemplation of the world, human condition and technological advancement, we underline cinema’s pedagogic capacity as a way of teaching mankind how to live in a technological society, as well as a way of unravelling some of man’s abuse, warning about the limits of creation.

Over the past two years, I have shifted to the field of film and television from being as a student of Fine Arts. The frequent accesses to various institutions and the abundant migration experience of various communities have been simultaneously conducted along with my intense experiences of creation (intensive production of film and TV scripts), thereby interactively identifying an urgent issue: how would the subjectivity avoid from losing its original appearance in the fields of cultural creation, social science and political science, as well as in the society and ideology of normal migration? For me, approaching different institutions is like a new “arrival,” arriving at another solid system that is already built with mechanisms and formulated jointly with similar values, which is relative to my constructive logics of story production—continuously conceive the new world view, interactions between roles, and the core theme. Through the intensive creative development, communication, adjustment and re-creation of the script production process, I have been brought with the dynamic construction experience of innovative evolution, as well as the realization of the dangerous situation of the existence of “I” during the increasing miscellany caused by different cultural creation fields. When I, as the author, have been transferred into the fictional world, how could the subjective consciousness of the author be recognized and built in stories with various types and themes? One is arriving at the already built system while another one has already built a new world. Nevertheless, both are the concept of migration, despite that the latter can visualize the differences between various systems in a particular fictional space and also has the potential to be excessively read and viewed. Thinking of the possibility that films can visualize the differences and connect with the dynamics at the same time, which forms a possible structure that is more consistent with the normal migration and also has the subject’s autonomy with variable nature in such a context, I, thereby, use the term of “Migratory Subjectivity.”

The present essay close the relationship between architecture and cinema, in the aspects which bring them together and separates, and the importance a bears in the learning process of the architect. The essay wishes to analyse the cinematographic vision of the architectural space and the image of the city in the Sci-Fi genre. The period observed ranges from 1910 to 2010. The essay is not about urban planning or any architectural styles, nor does it wish to make an historical description of architecture through the cinema, but does bear them in mind. This exercise is, in its essence, a reflection on the evolution of the urban utopia through celluloid and digital, whose evolution has branched into multiple dystopian and heterotopic visions of the future. If, in early German Expressionism, the abstract approach of the city worked as consolation and refusal of defeat at the end of the war, with the arrived of the modernist ideology of progress, the city was then seen as an optimistic and rationalized utopia that citizen wanted to achieved, and which pasted through hearly all of the 1st half of the 20th century, alongside with some voyer tendencies. The end of the 2nd World War marked a drift in the vision of the city, with the mentioned cinematographic genre. The destruction of the city and the trauma of the Holocaust caused a lack of interest in the cinematographic city as the main actor, or as a simple backdrop, and its vision as an urban role model of the future. The 60’s and the 70’s showed us a cynical modernity and the uprising against its modernist idealism, through the deconstruction of the public space, transforming it into fragmented compartments which focused on paranoia. During the 80’s and 90’s and the first decade of the new century, science-fiction cinema has shown us a post-modern dystopia, more and more contradictory. The utopian vision, by all means, unique and ideal, while the post-modern utopia admits that the ideal way not the same for all. Therefore, in the cinema, while the post-modern utopia way seem impossible, the modernist utopia seems perfectly possible. This brings us to the question: Could it be in that heterotopic space between dream and reality that the cinema operates, building in a realistic environment, an (in)possible city?
Healy, Paul James. « Cinema : an invention without a future ? The career prospects for first-time feature film directors in the Australian Film Industry ». Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10453/123212.
Texte intégralThe initiative for this research project first emerged from a set of statistics, which appeared on the Screen Australia website in 2011 with no accompanying explanation. Over a thirty-year timeframe, the figures showed that almost 66% of feature film directors make only one feature film. The question of how feature film directors build a sustainable career within this sector formed the foundation of this study. This research project involved a series of qualitative case studies, which focused on trying to reach an understanding of what constitutes the ‘essentials’ of a director’s career. An online survey was used to capture and measure some quantifiable data: Gender; educational level and duration; type of education; preference for course content; and professional experience were some of the targeted data categories. Drawing on concepts from critical theory, political economy, education, and filmmaking disciplines the study examines the way that workers make a career in a precarious and uncertain industry. The results show that prospective feature film directors start out with a high degree of optimism and are adept at positioning themselves through a range of strategies which ensures that they can make a living by utilising their knowledge of the ways in which the entire film and television sector operates. The study concludes that the primary barrier to an individual career and an extensive body of work seems to be due chiefly to the restrictions imposed on production levels by government policy settings and general economic volatility.

The following dissertation focuses on the study of cinemas built in Angola between the 60s and 70s of the 20th century. However, it’s given more emphasis to the cinemas projected from 1960, period which “cine-esplanadas” typology had great repercussion in the country. Thus, an investigation was made into how these types of equipment were important and determinant in many different phases – not only in architecture, but also in politics, economics and sociology – that this country went through. So, it is necessary to understand the previous context and during the construction of these – in particular the difficulties imposed by the Estado Novo regime and the circumstances of the emergence of a "Tropical Modern" –, in order to demonstrate how the structure of these cinemas evolved, as well as its function in a colonial and pre-independent society. Likewise, it will be important to explain the two typologies of cinemas explored in this country: the closed and the open typology. Three case studies – two open cinemas and one closed cinema – will be presented in three different cities of Angola: the Cine Atlântico (1966) in Luanda; the Cine Flamingo (1963) in Lobito; and the Cine Estúdio (c. 1970) in Moçâmedes. Finally, a current framework of these will be done, presenting the result of a Reading process of each cinema studied. Demonstrate how these expectant structures can be reused and inserted in a contemporary context. One of the main issues will be to demonstrate that these structures, nowadays expectant, can be reused and inserted in a contemporary context. Without presenting “the solution”, the present dissertation intends to exalt the original characteristics of these cinemas.
