Résumé :
Landslide traces are crucial geomorphological features of landslides. Through the recognition of landslide traces, a better grasp of the topographical features of landslides can be achieved, thereby aiding in the enhancement of capabilities for the prevention, response, and management of landslides. Aiming at the complex topographic features of landslide traces, only using a single DEM product could provide a complete and comprehensive recognition of landslide traces. A method of landslide tracing recognition based on the fusion of multi-feature information from the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based Light Detection and Ranging (UAV-based LiDAR) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is proposed. First, a high-precision DEM is constructed by using the LiDAR point cloud data. Based on the DEM, four multi-feature images that can enhance the landslide geomorphology are generated: hillshading, slope, positive openness, and sky-view factor. Furtherore, the DEM multi-feature images were fused using the Visualization for Archaeological Topography (VAT) method to obtain the DEM Multi-Feature Fusion Image (DEM-DFFI). Finally, the landslide traces were extracted from the DEM-DFFI based on fractal theory. The method presented in this paper makes full use of DEM multi-feature images and fuses them, which can accurately and clearly show the topographic and geomorphological features of landslides. Based on this, it helps improve landslide trace recognition accuracy.

Résumé :
Media content forgery is widely spread over the Internet and has raised severe societal concerns. With the development of deep learning, new technologies such as generative adversarial networks (GANs) and media forgery technology have already been utilized for politicians and celebrity forgery, which has a terrible impact on society. Existing GAN-generated face detection approaches rely on detecting image artifacts and the generated traces. However, these methods are model-specific, and the performance is deteriorated when faced with more complicated methods. What’s more, it is challenging to identify forgery images with perturbations such as JPEG compression, gamma correction, and other disturbances. In this paper, we propose a global–local facial fusion network, namely GLFNet, to fully exploit the local physiological and global receptive features. Specifically, GLFNet consists of two branches, i.e., the local region detection branch and the global detection branch. The former branch detects the forged traces from the facial parts, such as the iris and pupils. The latter branch adopts a residual connection to distinguish real images from fake ones. GLFNet obtains forged traces through various ways by combining physiological characteristics with deep learning. The method is stable with physiological properties when learning the deep learning features. As a result, it is more robust than the single-class detection methods. Experimental results on two benchmarks have demonstrated superiority and generalization compared with other methods.

The hypothesis of Paleozoic origin of mantises recently proposed by Béthoux & Wieland is discussed. It is shown that these authors reject the logical scenario of evolution of the main higher taxa in the order Dictyoptera, well grounded by the morphological, paleontological and molecular data, in favor of the opposite one based on two very feeble assumptions: about inexplicable importance of one of the very common fusions of veins RS and MA in the tegmina of one of the Carboniferous polyneopterans, and about some traces of basal fusion of RS and M ostensibly present in the tegmina of recent mantises. Arguments against these views are considered.

Abstract A small piece of the Morasko meteorite, weighing 970 g, yields traces of its journey through the Earth’s atmosphere and of its impact into a mineral substrate, such as reflected in the meteorite’s crust. This is seen in the crust structure in the form of sintered as well as fusion and semi-fusion layers for which ablative niches are optimum sites. Subsequent weathering processes have resulted in significant mineralogical changes in the crusts. The meteorite crusts originated during polygenetic processes.

Résumé :
Clonal reproduction in vertebrates can always be traced back to hybridization events as all known unisexual vertebrates are hybrids between recognized species or genetically defined races. Interestingly, clonal vertebrates often also rely on interspecific matings for their reproduction because gynogenesis (sperm-dependent parthenogenesis) and hybridogenesis are common modes of propagation. While in most cases these hybridization events leave no hereditary traces in the offspring, occasionally the genome exclusion mechanism fails and either small parts of male genetic material remain inside the oocyte in the form of microchromosomes, or fusion of the sperm nucleus with the oocyte nucleus leads to polyploid individuals. In this review, we highlight the important role of hybridization for the origin and evolution of a unisexual hybrid: the Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa .

Résumé :
Fusion of lipid bilayers is usually prevented by large energy barriers arising from removal of the hydration shell, formation of highly curved structures, and, eventually, fusion pore widening. Here, we measured the force-dependent lifetime of fusion intermediates using membrane-coated silica spheres attached to cantilevers of an atomic-force microscope. Analysis of time traces obtained from force-clamp experiments allowed us to unequivocally assign steps in deflection of the cantilever to membrane states during the SNARE-mediated fusion with solid-supported lipid bilayers. Force-dependent lifetime distributions of the various intermediate fusion states allowed us to propose the likelihood of different fusion pathways and to assess the main free energy barrier, which was found to be related to passing of the hydration barrier and splaying of lipids to eventually enter either the fully fused state or a long-lived hemifusion intermediate. The results were compared with SNARE mutants that arrest adjacent bilayers in the docked state and membranes in the absence of SNAREs but presence of PEG or calcium. Only with the WT SNARE construct was appreciable merging of both bilayers observed.

Résumé :
In four genera of schizotheriine Chalicotheriidae—Moropus, Tylocephalonyx, Phyllotillon, and Ancylotherium–proximal and middle phalanges of digit II of the manus fuse to form a duplex bone. Fusion of proximal and middle phalanges of digit II of the pes also occurs in many species of these genera. Radiographic and sagittal-sectional study of the fused duplex phalanges of Moropus elatus and Tylocephalonyx skinneri shows that the joint between the two bones formed fully prior to fusion but had little movement. Fusion proceeded by external enthesial interactions at the insertion of the ligament capsule and by disruption of cortical bone with trabecular bridging along the internal part of the original articular surface. Cortical disruption is more rapid on the middle than on the proximal phalangeal component of the duplex. In M. elatus, the degrees of external and internal fusion roughly correspond, and a ventral surficial groove sometimes traces the former facet, whereas in T. skinneri external fusion is much more developed than internal fusion. Phalangeal fusion seems to have strengthened the digit against strong forces applied along the medial (radial or tibial) side of the foot.

Abstract The proton-boron aneutronic fusion reaction has numerous potential applications varying from controlled nuclear fusion reactor to broad-energy spectrum α-particle source, as well as uses in medicine, where it can serve as a source for radioisotope production, or directly in proton boron capture therapy. However, proton-boron fusion reaction and its by-products should be investigated extensively to provide a stable and controlled secondary ion source. In order to monitor the multi-ion beam emitted and accelerated from the target surface after interaction with laser pulses, a new Thomson Parabola Spectrometer (TPS) has been designed to differentiate proton and alpha traces in the energy ranges 0.5–5 MeV and 1–10 MeV respectively, with a high energy resolution (≤ 1%), while maintaining compactness of the spectrometer (∼ 20 cm).

Résumé :
With the rapid development of deep learning, generating realistic fake face videos is becoming easier. It is common to make fake news, network pornography, extortion and other related illegal events using deep forgery. In order to attenuate the harm of deep forgery face video, researchers proposed many detection methods based on the tampering traces introduced by deep forgery. However, these methods generally have poor cross-database detection performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-feature fusion detection method to improve the generalization ability of the detector. This method combines feature information of face video in the spatial domain, frequency domain, Pattern of Local Gravitational Force (PLGF) and time domain and effectively reduces the average error rate of span detection while ensuring good detection effect in the library.

Résumé :
Abstract The zona pellucida, a glycoprotein matrix surrounding the mammalian oocyte, hardens after intrusion of the first spermatozoon, thus protecting the embryo until implantation and preventing multiple fertilizations (polyspermy). Definitive zona hardening is mediated by the metalloprotease ovastacin, which is released from cortical granules of the oocyte upon sperm penetration. However, traces of ovastacin seep from unfertilized eggs to cause zona hardening even in the absence of sperm. These small amounts of protease are inactivated by the plasma protein fetuin-B, thus keeping eggs fertilizable. Once a sperm has penetrated the egg, ovastacin from cortical vesicles overrides fetuin-B and initiates zona hardening.

A new feather mite genus Armophyllodes gen. n. (Proctophyllodidae: Proctophyllodinae) is established based on two new species, Armophyllodes gracilis sp. n. (type species) and A. robustus sp. n., described from the Olivaceous flatbill, Rhynchocyclus olivaceus (Temminck) (Passeriformes: Tyrannidae), in Panama. The new genus is related to the Nycteridocaulus generic group and clearly differs from other genera in having the strongly sclerotized lateral parts of coxal fields II in both sexes, the epigynum fused with the inner tips of epimerites IIIa in females, and vestigial terminal lamellae in males. The fusion of the epigynum with epimerites is an extremely rare character state in the subfamily Proctophyllodinae; among other known members of this subfamily, it was previously known only in females of Anisophyllodes pipromorphae Atyeo, 1967. In contrast to the subfamily Pterodectinae, in all representatives of which the fusion of the epigynum with epimerites is complete and these sclerites constitute a uniformly sclerotized arch-like structure, in the two species of the genus Armophyllodes and in An. pipromorphae, the traces of fusion between these sclerites are clearly distinct. This gives evidence that the fusion of the epigynum with epimerites in pterodectines and proctophyllodines originated independently.

Résumé :
Dissolution, crystallization and second dissolution traces of isotactic poly(propylene) have been obtained in a slow temperature ramp (3 K h-1) with the C80 Setaram calorimeter. Traces of phase-change, in presence of solvent, are comparable to traces without solvent. The change of enthalpy on heating or cooling, ∆Htotal, over the 40-170 °C temperature range, is the sum of two contributions, ∆HDSC and ∆Hnetwork. The change ∆HDSC is the usual heat obtained in a fast temperature ramp and ∆Hnetwork is associated with a physical network whose disordering is slow and subject to superheating due to strain. When dissolution is complete, ∆Htotal is equal to ∆H0, the heat of fusion of perfect crystals. The values of ∆Htota for nascent and recrystallized samples are compared. Dissolution is the tool to evaluate the quality of the crystals. The repartition of ∆Htotal, into the two endotherms, reflects the quality of crystals. The crystals grown more rapidly have a higher fraction of network crystals which are stable at high T in the solvents. A complete dissolution, i.e. a high temperature (170 °C or more) is necessary to obtain good crystals. The effect of concentration, polymer molecular weight and solvent quality on crystal growth is analyzed.

Résumé :
With the development of generative model, the cost of facial manipulation and forgery is becoming lower and lower. Fraudulent data has brought numerous hidden threats in politics, privacy, and cybersecurity. Although many methods of face forgery detection focus on the learning of high frequency forgery traces and achieve promising performance, these methods usually learn features in spatial and frequency independently. In order to combine the information of the two domains, a combined spatial and frequency dual stream network is proposed for face forgery detection. Concretely, a cross self-attention (CSA) module is designed to improve frequency feature interaction and fusion at different scales. Moreover, to augment the semantic and contextual information, frequency guided spatial feature extraction module is proposed to extract and reconstruct the spatial information. These two modules deeply mine the forgery traces via a dual-stream collaborative network. Through comprehensive experiments on different datasets, we demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method for both within and cross datasets.

Résumé :
Crowd monitoring systems (CMSs) provide a state-of-the-art solution to manage crowds objectively. Most crowd monitoring systems feature one type of sensor, which severely limits the insights one can simultaneously gather regarding the crowd’s traffic state. Incorporating multiple functionally complementary sensor types is expensive. CMSs are needed that exploit data fusion opportunities to limit the number of (more expensive) sensors. This research estimates a data fusion algorithm to enhance the functionality of a CMS featuring Wi-Fi sensors by means of a small number of automated counting systems. Here, the goal is to estimate the pedestrian flow rate accurately based on real-time Wi-Fi traces at one sensor location, and historic flow rate and Wi-Fi trace information gathered at other sensor locations. Several data fusion models are estimated, amongst others, linear regression, shallow and recurrent neural networks, and Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMAX) models. The data from the CMS of a large four-day music event was used to calibrate and validate the models. This study establishes that the RNN model best predicts the flow rate for this particular purpose. In addition, this research shows that model structures that incorporate information regarding the average current state of the area and the temporal variation in the Wi-Fi/count ratio perform best.

In this study, we evaluate the use of a sample of fly ash from TERMOPAIPA (Boyacá, Colombia) as the starting material for the synthesis of zeotypes on laboratory scale through its transforming via alkaline fusion, using solid or water dissolved NaOH, followed by aging during 6, 12 and 24 h under static or ultrasound conditions prior to hydrothermal treatment during 6, 12 and 24 h of reaction time. Experimental data reveal that the method, state of alkaline fusion, temperature and time of reaction strongly affect the zeotype to be synthesized. Low-silica sodium zeotypes were synthesized, which include zeolite NaP1, faujasite, and traces of sodalite. The synthesis of zeotypes from fly ash represents an interesting alternative for the mitigation of the environmental problem associated to the disposal of industrial wastes. Therefore, fly ash-based zeotypes synthesized under optimum experimental conditions can be used in several applications for environmental waste treatment.

During the fusion of rodent embryo palatal shelves, the cells of the outer epithelial layer slough off, allowing the cells of the medial edge basal layer to form a midline seam that undergoes epithelial-mesenchymal transformation, as judged by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. In this study, we analyze the fate of the transformed cells using a lipid soluble dye to label the medial edge epithelium in situ. Prefusion E14 mouse palates were exposed in vitro or in vivo to a fluoresceinated lipid soluble marker, carboxydichlorofluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CCFSE), which localizes in epithelia as a lipid insoluble compound that does not pass into the connective tissue compartment. The midline seam that formed after 24 hours contained labelled epithelial cells that were replaced by individually labelled mesenchymal cells where the seam transformed. By light microscopy, the labelled cells were seen to contain intensely fluorescent bodies that do not react for acid phosphatase. We were able for the first time to identify these structures by electron microscopy as CCFSE isolation bodies. The cells with isolation bodies are clearly healthy and able to participate in subsequent development of the palate. At 4 days after labelling, individual CCFSE containing cells present in the palate mesenchyme occupy both midline and lateral areas and can clearly be classified as fibroblasts by electron microscopy. CCFSE is a far more useful marker than another lipid soluble marker, DiI, for following cells, because the cells can be fixed and identified both at the light and electron microscope levels. Interestingly, if labelled palatal shelves are not allowed to fuse in vitro, the basal epithelial cells do not form mesenchyme after sloughing, indicating that formation of the epithelial midline seam is necessary to trigger its epithelial-mesenchymal transformation.

Abstract: The happening of understanding, as key-issue of Gadamer’s thought, can be also understood like a fusion of horizons. From the point of view of philosophical hermeneutics, this aspect opens the possibility of discussing about the sphere of understanding simultaneously ontological and practice philosophical experience. Therefore, the description of understanding as fusion of horizons indicates the treatment of basic traces of human life that finds affinities with the rehabilitation of practical philosophy of Aristotle. Thus, we intend to discuss some aspects of the relation between the notions of understanding and fusion of horizons from the essential connection between philosophical hermeneutics and practical philosophy. Résumé :
The detection of crack information is very important in mural conservation. In practice, the number of ancient murals is scarce, and the difficulty of collecting digital information about murals leads to minimal data being collected. Crack information appears in pictures of paintings, which resembles painting traces and is easy to misidentify. However, the current mainstream semantic segmentation networks directly use the features of the backbone network for prediction, which do not fully use the features at different scales and ignore the differences between the decoder and encoder features. This paper proposes a new U-shaped convolutional neural network with feature pyramids and a transformer called TMCrack-net. Instead of U-Net’s jump-join, an AG-BiFPN network is used, which consists of two modules: a channel cross-fusion (CCT) module with a transformer and a bidirectional feature pyramid network. While fully using the information in different network dimensions, the channel cross-fusion module optimizes the final features of each layer to reduce the confounding effect caused by the fusion of features. For the fusion of multi-scale channel information with decoder features, we designed a fusion module based on a channel attention (called FCA) to guide the fusion of enhanced encoder features with decoder features and reduce the ambiguity between the two feature sets. To demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization of the model, TMCrack-Net was evaluated on the Tang Dynasty tomb chamber mural dataset and Crack500. MIou values of 0.7731 and 0.7944 were achieved, respectively, which are better than those of other advanced crack detection methods. The method yields accurate segmentation performance and is advantageous for mural painting crack segmentation tasks.

Résumé :
In the study of non-intrusive load monitoring, using a single feature for identification can lead to insignificant differentiation of similar loads; however, multi-feature fusion can pool the advantages of different features to improve identification accuracy. Based on this, this paper proposes a recognition method based on feature fusion and matrix heat maps, using V-I traces, phase and amplitude of odd harmonics, and fundamental amplitude. These are converted into matrix heat maps, which can retain both large and small eigenvalues of the same feature for different loads and can retain different features. The matrix heat map is recognized by using SE-ResNet18, which avoids the problem of the classical CNN depth being too deep, causing network degradation and being difficult to train, and achieves trauma-free monitoring of home loads. Finally, the model is validated using the PLAID and REDD datasets, and the average recognition accuracy is 96.24% and 96.4%, respectively, with significant recognition effects for loads with similar V-I trajectories and multi-state loads.

Résumé :
Along with the widespread use of face recognition systems, their vulnerability has become highlighted. While existing face anti-spoofing methods can be generalized between attack types, generic solutions are still challenging due to the diversity of spoof characteristics. Recently, the spoof trace disentanglement framework has shown great potential for coping with both seen and unseen spoof scenarios, but the performance is largely restricted by the single-modal input. This paper focuses on this issue and presents a multi-modal disentanglement model which targetedly learns polysemantic spoof traces for more accurate and robust generic attack detection. In particular, based on the adversarial learning mechanism, a two-stream disentangling network is designed to estimate spoof patterns from the RGB and depth inputs, respectively. In this case, it captures complementary spoofing clues inhering in different attacks. Furthermore, a fusion module is exploited, which recalibrates both representations at multiple stages to promote the disentanglement in each individual modality. It then performs cross-modality aggregation to deliver a more comprehensive spoof trace representation for prediction. Extensive evaluations are conducted on multiple benchmarks, demonstrating that learning polysemantic spoof traces favorably contributes to anti-spoofing with more perceptible and interpretable results.

Résumé :
Internet of Things (IoT) is widely used in environmental monitoring, smart healthcare, and other fields. Due to its distributed nature, IoT is vulnerable to various internal attacks. One of these attacks is the packet-dropping attack, which is very harmful. The existing packet-dropping attack detection algorithms are unsuitable for emerging resource-constrained IoT networks. For example, ML-based algorithms always inject numerous packets to obtain the training dataset. However, it is heavyweight for energy-limited nodes to forward these extra packets. In this paper, we propose a lightweight evidence fusion-based detection algorithm (EFDA), which leverages the packet forwarding evidence to identify malicious nodes. Firstly, EFDA finds the sequence numbers of dropped packets and their corresponding source nodes. Then, it traces the routing path of each dropped packet and collects evidence for detection. The evidence stored by nodes around the path record the node’s forwarding behaviors. Finally, the collected evidence is fused to evaluate the trust of nodes. Based on nodes’ trust, the K-means clustering is used to distinguish between malicious nodes and benign nodes. We conduct simulation experiments to compare EFDA with ML-based algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that EFDA can detect the packet-dropping attack without injecting packets and achieve a higher detection accuracy.

The primary results obtained are a method to fabricate package substrates, small form factor rigid and flexible circuits using a material used in the connector industry Liquid Crystal Polymer, and linking circuits and connectors with tuned high density performance not possible with legacy manufacturing. Applications will be detailed in conjunction with the Semiconductor companies that demonstrate substrates and circuits that have high aspect ratio traces with 20–50 micron traces surrounded with fusion bonded LCP that enables impedance matching of 1–2% on high density. The study extends further to connector technology that enables interconnect of the subject substrate or circuit directly into mobile and wearable applications with over 1000 high speed interconnects capable of 28–56 Gb/s performance within a 1/2 inch square area. In addition the study will leverage the formable nature of circuit bearing Liquid Crystal Polymer to create interconnected assemblies with integral antennae, decoupling, RF shielding and die to die interconnect ideal for wearable applications.

Résumé :
Semantic segmentation of remote sensing images plays a crucial role in urban planning and development. How to perform automatic, fast, and effective semantic segmentation of considerable size and high-resolution remote sensing images has become the key to research. However, the existing segmentation methods based on deep learning are complex and often difficult to apply practically due to the high computational cost of the excessive parameters. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end lightweight progressive attention semantic segmentation network (LPASS-Net), which aims to solve the problem of reducing computational costs without losing accuracy. Firstly, its backbone features are based on a lightweight network, MobileNetv3, and a feature fusion network composed of a reverse progressive attentional feature fusion network work. Additionally, a lightweight non-local convolutional attention network (LNCA-Net) is proposed to effectively integrate global information of attention mechanisms in the spatial dimension. Secondly, an edge padding cut prediction (EPCP) method is proposed to solve the problem of splicing traces in the prediction results. Finally, evaluated on the public datasets BDCI 2017 and ISPRS Potsdam, the mIoU reaches 83.17% and 88.86%, respectively, with an inference time of 0.0271 s.

Résumé :
Abstract. Mapping the exact extent of urban areas is a critical prerequisite in many remote sensing applications, such as hazard evaluation and change detection. The usage of Synthetical Aperture Radar (SAR) data has gained popularity due to the unique characteristics of the backscattered radio signal from human-made targets. The Sentinel-1 (S1) constellation, with a global revisit time of 6–12 days in Interferometric Wide Swath (IW) mode and free and open access to the data, allows the development of new applications to monitor urban sites. However, S1 is rarely considered when fine resolution is required due to the large pixel size and the need for spatial averaging to obtain robust estimators. We propose a method to improve Sentinel-1 urban classification performance by exploiting one Multi-Spectral (MS) image acquired by Sentinel-2 (S2). MS data is used for tracing the precise natural boundaries in a scene through superpixels segmentation. A machine learning approach is then applied to interpret the thematic context of each segment from short temporal stacks of coregistered SAR data. We use a short sensing period (around two months), so rapid changes can be traces. The proposed fusion of S1 and S2 data was tested in the area of Milan (Italy), with a total accuracy of about 90%. The ability to follow high-resolution details in a mixed environment is demonstrated, opening the possibility of efficiently tracing the human footprint.

A petrifted part of a rachilla from an inflorescence of Arecaceae has been described from the Deccan Intertrappean beds exposed at Nawargaon-Maragsur area of Wardha District, Maharashtra, India. The inflorescence shows a spiral arrangement of flower triads, each triad in a pit with a central large pistillate flower having a two whorled perianth and a superior ovary flanked on either side by a small staminate flower. The inflorescence axis exhibits wide variable cortex with ftbre bundles and empty sacs, a reduced vascular region with a very compact arrangement of fibrovascular bundles, floral traces and diminutive and fusion bundles enclosing a small pith. Morphological and anatomical characters ofthe rachilla suggest its affinity with the members of sub-family Arecoideae of the family Arelaceae.

Abstract: The article focuses on the Pushkin debate of the 1890s to examine attitudes toward facts and authenticity in fin-de-siècle Russia. It traces the clash between positivist-empiricist methods of enquiry that emphasized facts and authenticity and the neo-romantic intuitivist paradigm that dismissed their importance. While the debaters' modes of engaging with the past might have been impacted by an array of factors (generational preferences, professional habits of mind, matters of aesthetic taste), an important rift also followed ideological lines. The fusion of Pushkin with Russia, typical of nationalist and official patriotic narratives, was aligned with a reliance on subjective intuition as a basis for historical depiction. Conversely, accounts devoid of nationalist fervour and ritualized reverence were grounded in positivist methods of enquiry.

Résumé :
Abstract In the Tarim Basin, the main hydrocarbon reservoirs of Ordovician carbonate rocks are fractured-vuggy reservoirs, of which the underground river type reservoirs are an important type. Seismic coherence attribute can highlight seismic discontinuity caused by tectonic movements, reservoir boundaries, sedimentary body boundaries or other factors. Thus, it is a widely used key technique in seismic interpretation. There are many algorithms to determine the coherence. Typically, the coherence algorithm based on eigen-structure analysis is the most robust, but is sensitive to waveform differences and insensitive to amplitude differences. This paper proposes an amplitude coherence attribute to measure semblance of root-mean-square (RMS) amplitudes of multiple traces and fuses it with the third-generation coherence (C3) to describe the boundary of underground river. Model test and case study prove that the proposed fused algorithm can effectively identify the amplitude and waveform differences in seismic data.

Résumé :
Abstract Karyotype change and subsequent evolution is triggered by chromosome fusion and rearrangement events, which often occur when telomeres become dysfunctional. Telomeres protect linear chromosome ends from DNA damage responses (DDRs), and telomere dysfunction may result in genome instability. However, the complex chromosome end structures and the other possible consequences of telomere dysfunction have rarely been resolved at the nucleotide level due to the lack of the high-throughput methods needed to analyse these highly repetitive regions. Here we applied long-read sequencing technology to Caenorhabditis elegans survivor lines that emerged after telomere dysfunction. The survivors have preserved traces of DDRs in their genomes and our data revealed that variants generated by telomere dysfunction are accumulated along all chromosomes. The reconstruction of the chromosome end structures through de novo genome assemblies revealed diverse types of telomere damage processing at the nucleotide level. When telomeric repeats were totally eroded by telomere dysfunction, DDRs were mostly terminated by chromosome fusion events. We also partially reconstructed the most complex end structure and its DDR signatures, which would have been accumulated via multiple cell divisions. These finely resolved chromosome end structures suggest possible mechanisms regarding the repair processes after telomere dysfunction, providing insights into chromosome evolution in nature.

Résumé :
Academic research in media forensics mainly focuses on methods for the detection of the traces or artefacts left by media manipulations in media objects. While the resulting detectors often achieve quite impressive detection performances, when tested under lab conditions, hardly any of those have yet come close to the ultimate benchmark for any forensic method, which would be courtroom readiness. This paper tries first to facilitate the different stakeholder perspectives in this field and then to partly address the apparent gap between the academic research community and the requirements imposed onto forensic practitioners. The intention is to facilitate the mutual understanding of these two classes of stakeholders and assist with first steps intended at closing this gap. To do so, first a concept for modelling media forensic investigation pipelines is derived from established guidelines. Then, the applicability of such modelling is illustrated on the example of a fusion-based media forensic investigation pipeline aimed at the detection of DeepFake videos using five exemplary detectors (hand-crafted, in one case neural network supported) and testing two different fusion operators. At the end of the paper, the benefits of such a planned realisation of AI-based investigation methods are discussed and generalising effects are mapped out.

There is still no consensus on the management of severe intracanal RH dislocation in neurofibromatosis type 1 dystrophic kyphoscoliosis. This study notes the early cord function impairment signs, reports a serious complication in a susceptible cord, identifies possible mechanisms of injury, and discusses the management of intracanal RH dislocation presented in the literature. First report is as follows: a 12-year-old female with cord compromise and preoperative neurology that underwent thoracotomy and anterior release. The RH was left in situ following a rib excision. During the posterior stage of the procedure she presented with complete loss of all IOM traces prior to any correction manoeuvres. The neurology recovered 72 h postop and the final correction and instrumented fusion were uneventfully completed 15 days postop. Second report is as follows: a 10-year-old male, whose only neurology was a provoked shock-like sensation to the lower limbs following direct pressure on the rib cage. He underwent an uneventful posterior RH excision and instrumented correction and posterior spinal fusion. In conclusion, any possible cord dysfunction sign should be sought during examination. Decompression of the spinal cord by resecting the impinging bony part, even in the absence of neurological symptoms, is advised before any attempt to release or correct the deformity.

Résumé :
We used an improved cryosectioning technique in combination with immunogold cytochemistry and morphometric analysis to study the convergence of the autophagic and endocytic pathways in isolated rat hepatocytes. The endocytic pathway was traced by continuous uptake of gold tracer for various time periods, up to 45 min, while the cells were incubated in serum-free medium to induce autophagy. Endocytic structures involved in fusion with autophagic vacuoles (AV) were categorized into multivesicular endosomes (MVE) and vesicular endosomes (VE). Three types of AV—initial (AVi), intermediate (AVi/d), and degradative (AVd)—were defined by morphological criteria and immunogold labeling characteristics of marker enzymes. The entry of tracer into AV, manifested as either tracer-containing AV profiles (AV+) or fusion profiles (FP+) between AV and tracer-positive endosomal vesicles/vacuoles, was detected as early as 10 min after endocytosis. The number of AV+ exhibited an exponential increase with time. FP+ between MVE or VE and all three types of AV were observed. Among the 112 FP+ scored, 36% involved VE. Of the AV types, AVi and AVi/d were found five to six times more likely to be involved in fusions than AVd. These fusion patterns did not significantly change during the period of endocytosis (15–45 min). We conclude that the autophagic and endocytic pathways converge in a multistage fashion starting within 10 min of endocytosis. The nascent AV is the most upstream and preferred fusion partner for endosomes.

The fusion of religion and populism has paved the way for civilisationism. However, this significant issue is still unresearched. This paper attempts to address this gap by investigating the Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Islamist populism and civilisationism as an empirical case study. While Islamism has been explored in the context of Pakistan, this paper goes beyond and investigates the amalgamation of Islamist ideals with populism. Using discourse analysis, the paper traces the horizontal and vertical dimensions of Imran Khan’s religious populism. The paper provides an understanding of how “the people”, “the elite”, and “the others” are defined at present in Pakistan from an antagonistic and anti-Western civilisationist perspective. The paper finds that “New Pakistan” is indeed a “homeland” or an idolized society defined by Islamist civilisationism to which extreme emotions, sentimentality and victimhood are attached.

Résumé :
High voltage electron microscopy of intact cells prepared by the critical point drying (CPD) procedure has become an important tool in the study of three-dimensional relationships between cytoplasmic organelles. It has been claimed that critical point-dried specimens reveal a structure that is not visible in sections of plastic-embedded material; it has also been claimed that this structure, in association with known cytoplasmic filaments, forms a meshwork of tapering threads ("microtrabecular lattice"). Alternatively, this structure might be a surface tension artifact produced during CPD. To test possible sources of artifacts during CPD, model fiber systems of known structure were used. It was found that traces of water or ethanol in the CO2 caused distortions and fusion of fibers in pure muscle actin, fibrin, collagen, chromatin, and microtubules that produce a structure very similar to the proposed "microtrabecular lattice." These structures were, however, well preserved if water and ethanol were totally excluded from the CO2. The same results were obtained with whole mounts of cultured cells. A "microtrabecular lattice" was obtained if some water or ethanol was present in the pressure chamber. On the other hand, when water or ethanol were totally excluded from the CO2 during CPD, cytoplasmic filaments were uniform in thickness similar to their appearance in sections of plastic-embedded cells. It is concluded that the "microtrabecular lattice" is a distorted image of the cytoplasmic filament network produced during CPD by traces of water or ethanol in the CO2.

Résumé :
The form of the second movement of the String Quartet in A major, Op. 7 is original not only in Dohnányi’s oeuvre but in music history in general, as well. This new musical idea is a fusion of two traditional forms: a variation and a ternary form. The theme of the movement is followed by four variations, but at the end of the second one there is an unexpected break: a contrasting Trio-like section comes in between and the flow of variations continues only after it finishes. This unique structure is analysed in detail for the first time in present study. Relying on analyses of Dohnányi’s compositions, this study traces similar formal characteristics in other works of the composer too. Finally, the article provides with an example for this hybrid form in one of its three closest relatives: the second movement of the Piano Quintet in Eb minor, Op. 26.

Résumé :
Abstract The elemental quantification of liquid metal divertor (LMD) surface is important for understanding the material erosion, migration, re-deposition, and fuel retention in Plasma-Facing Components (PFCs). Currently, LMD are attractive candidates for the short- and long-term operation of fusion devices like DEMO. Liquid metals can provide self-cooling, self-replenishing plasma-facing surfaces requiring very little upkeep. In a previous work, we studied Li and LiSn layers deposited on attachment screws in the COMPASS tokamak by means of Calibration-Free Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (CF-LIBS). Several problems were encountered related to the detection of Sn in LiSn. Thus, in the present work, we are optimizing the experimental conditions for the detection of Sn I-II and Pb I-II in Pb-containing Sn-based alloys, performing the quantification of Pb in traces and in bulk quantities using CF-LIBS approach.
