Résumé :
This paper begins with an overview of the history of radio drama as well as its charac- teristics. Radio dramas of Radomir Konstantinović represent a very specific part of his work mostly due to the historical position of this genre. The central part of the paper is the analysis of his radio drama called The Lipton Tea. There are some characteristic poetic elements in it which are connected to his novels. The crucial problems are problems of identity in a modern world and a dream of happiness and friendship. Since his radio dramas are fully published in 2019 for the first time, this paper traces the path for further research in this area.

Résumé :
AbstractOne of the ways in which Plautus investigates friendship is through his use of the stock characters so central to Roman comedy. Among the twelve stock characters of comedy that Apuleius lists, appears the figure of the sodalis opitulator (the 'helpful mate'), who has not so far drawn much attention. Not only does Plautus use this character frequently, in five of his twenty extant plays he employs not one friend, but two, as a double motif. In these plays, Plautus uses these double stock characters to parody the ideals of friendship which had developed in the literary tradition, and to play with the conventions of drama as part of a metatheatrical approach to comedy. By a doubling of this motif, Plautus highlights friendship, in order to look at other literary or dramatic themes that include the ideal literary friendship, the supremacy of the Plautine slave and drama itself.

Résumé :
A good relationship is not always shared by most teenagers especially in socializing, even not just teenagers, the bigger a person, the more difficult it will be for them to have sincere friendships. In the present era there are many bad things that cause a problem and also have a negative impact that starts from a friendship that is not good. According to an extreme statement by British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, we could have hundreds of friends, but no more than 5 could understand us. This statement and phenomenon is the inspiration for this short film work entitled "How Bromance Us". How Bromance Us is a short film with a fictional drama genre, this friendship has been going on for more than nine years, started from the thought of Edgar who strongly does not believe that there are friends in this world who are truly sincere in undergoing friendship. In one situation Edgar realized that what he always believed was the wrong thing because he realized that his little relative Ryan was a true friend because he had gone through good and bad things together and gave each other support to each other. This work uses steps for developing ideas, writing scripts, determining players, selecting sets and properties, reading, shooting and, and editing. The results of this work last 20 minutes accompanied by a moral message that being yourself is very important, but do not forget to keep the feelings of others, especially true friends. It is hoped that this non-thesis work can change the way the viewer views his friendship relationship and can inspire other filmmakers to continue producing works that have a strong moral message.

Résumé :
AbstractThis essay examines representation of male friendship in Ming vernacular literature through an analysis of works that retell the story of two late Han friends, Fan Juqing and Zhang Yuanbo. Throughout the Ming, versions of the tale were produced in a variety of literary genres including a zaju play and a vernacular short story. Both the drama and the short story are extant in multiple editions, providing us insights into how they were interpreted by various literati editors. The durability of the friendship between Fan and Zhang—an essential aspect in all depictions of their story—is vividly evoked by the phrase that characterizes their relationship in dramatic literature: "a friendship of metal and stone." The late Ming editions of the play and the short story underline the two friends' unbending commitment to their friendship through a variety of textual and paratextual additions and emendations. In the hands of these late Ming literati editors the two friends Fan and Zhang thus become heroic figures worthy of eternal respect.

Résumé :
I propose a revisionary reading of Plato’s Crito focusing on the dramatic rendering of the friendship between Crito and Socrates, which I argue affords a model for political participation in a social contract. Their friendship models how citizens can come to be conventionally related to one another, and how they should treat one another internal to that relationship. This approach is apt for contemporary democratic theory, perhaps more so than standard interpretations of the political theory traditionally mined from the text, rather than drama, of the Crito. My account moves beyond questions of civility in deliberative democratic politics and deepens an account of how and why we ought to regard those with whom we disagree, but to whom we have nonetheless quasi-voluntarily bound ourselves within the same project of democracy. Friendship also addresses regard for those who have not previously received equal consideration within a putatively democratic social contract.

Canadian Brash presents an exciting – sometimes challenging – sampling of contemporary writing in all genres. Although the work is often postmodern in approach, it generally fits within traditional genre definitions and, with some exceptions, moves within narrative structures to closure: this is not writing as avant-garde as can be found in the little mags, nor is it writing which avoids the narratological or standard grammars of usage. It does, however, extend the cultural and political grammars of Canadian society to redefine gender roles, friendship, family love, sexual love, and responsibility, often in themes or subtexts which concern homosexual issues.

Résumé :
Relationships are an essential factor for wellbeing. To create and maintain relationships is also a crucial part of many jobs. These relationships sometimes develop into friendships, which often have been viewed as positive for performance and wellbeing at the workplace. However, previous research mainly focuses on the upsides of workplace friendships. In recent studies, the importance to also investigate the dark sides of workplace friendships have been emphasized. One of these dark sides has beenlabeled workplace friendship deterioration, which is the phenomenon which will be studied in this thesis. The study contributes to the research field of management with insights into coping mechanisms tied to the phenomenon. More specifically, the studyfocuseson organizational members within the service sectors. Therefore, the research question reads as follows: Which coping mechanisms are displayed by organizational members in service sectors when workplace friendships are deteriorated? The theoretical point of departure providesa foundation for the study by presenting previous academic studies, discuss the relevance of concepts and interpret findings reported in previous studies. The theoretical framework introducesthe theories of coping mechanisms and emotions. This forms a basis for the analysis and discussion of the findings. The study is based on a qualitative research method. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with nine different respondents, all based in Umeå, Sweden. The interviews were transcribed and then coded with the software Nvivo. The results of this study show that the coping mechanisms organizational members in service sectors display when workplace friendships deteriorate depend on the characteristics of the experienced situation. Depending on the situation, one of the main coping categories of problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, adaptive coping, or maladaptive coping are adapted. These are more specifically expressed as distancing, confronting, talking to others, reaching out, informing manager, altering point of view, denying, and breaking commitment. The main coping and the expressed coping together form the displayed coping mechanisms. The process of coping with workplace friendship deterioration is found to consist of four stages. These are labeled as causes, emotions, main coping, and expressed coping. Causes for workplace friendship deterioration, ordered from most to least commonly occurring, are toxic behavior, communication issues, different perceptions on tasks and responsibility, close relationships, polarization, injustice, organizational issues, management issues, differing moral and values, competition, differing ambitions and goals, and distractions.

Mentzer, Julianne. « The textuality of friendship : homosocial hermeneutic exchanges in early modern English drama ». Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/16009.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
My thesis argues that textually embedded intimacy and exclusivity between men opens up ethical problems concerning the use of education and persuasive powers—the ability to reconfigure vice as virtue, to argue a case for transgressions, and to navigate political, economic, and social spheres for personal self-advancement. My argument is based first on the proposition that masculine elite friendship in the early modern period is situated in specific pedagogical practices, engagement with particular rhetorical manuals and classical texts, and manipulation of texts which determine the affectionate, ‘textual', nature of these relationships. From this, I propose, second, that a hermeneutic process of rhetorical and poetic composition and exclusionary understanding is embedded within these textual relationships. From these two propositions, I analyse the textual surface of homosocial relationships in order to ask questions about ethical dilemmas concerning the forms of power they represent. How can an enclosed system of affection be useful for political, social, or financial advancement by making a vice (self-interest) of a virtue (fidelity), a dubious idea in the early modern period? How are homosocial networks developed and depicted through an engagement with their own textuality? Are they shown as transgressive and dangerous in further marginalizing those who are not privy to the system of textual exchange between men? The creation of homosocial male friendships is predicated on the idea that there are shared texts and methodologies for internalizing ideas from classical sources (imitatio) and for using these as starting points for the creation of arguments (inventio) to suit social, political, and even domestic situations. I focus on fictitious relationships developed in early modern English drama—as playwrights represent masculine discourse, textual knowledge, and rhetorical techniques. The friendships and fellowships in these dramatic productions contain questions about the use of masculine networks in socio-political and economic navigation.

Trevor, Wendy Ellen. « Less than ideal ? : the intellectual history of male friendship and its articulation in early modern drama ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/614/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the intellectual history of male friendship through its articulation in non-Shakespearean early modern drama; and considers how dramatic texts engage with the classical ideals of male friendship. Cicero’s \(De amicitia\) provided the theoretical model for perfect friendship for the early modern period; and this thesis argues for the further relevance of early modern translations of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, and in particular, Seneca’s De beneficiis, both of which open up meanings of different formulations and practices of friendship. This thesis, then, analyses how dramatists contributed to the discourse of male friendship through representations that expanded the bounds of amity beyond the paradigmatic ‘one soul in two bodies’, into different conceptions of friendship both ideal and otherwise. Through a consideration of selected dramatic works in their early modern cultural contexts, this thesis adds to our understanding of how amicable relations between men were arranged, performed, read and understood in the early modern period.

The couple is faced with family and social concerns, which goes from the argumentative to the violent. As the main characters try to mingle with the conservative town, they soon find themselves looked upon by a small town resistant to change. Hill, Leslie Anne. « Theatres and friendships : the spheres and strategies of Elizabeth Robins ». Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/17879.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Victorian women used strategies that allowed them to not only work as actresses but also as directors, producers, translators, and playwrights, thus transforming theatre at the cusp of the New Drama. Female friendships were particularly integral to these strategies as women employed secretiveness and anonymity, charm and shrewdness, networking and collaborating in small and large groups to meet their creative and professional goals. Through these means of sociability women enlarged their spheres of influence beyond the stage. Elizabeth Robins is a superb example of these strategies, particularly when theatrical realism was her primary focus. Though she also collaborated well with men, William Archer and Henry James among them, it was Robins’s female friends who helped her to establish a London career. This project shows how Robins and her women friends contributed to the New Drama in dynamic, critical, and often-secret ways. Marion Lea and Robins finagled the rights to Hedda Gabler in 1891. Lea and Florence Bell helped Robins to translate plays for production and to develop new acting techniques suited to realism. After Lea left England, Robins and Bell joined Grein’s Independent Theatre Society to present their anonymously written protest play Alan’s Wife. These efforts illustrate the adaptive functions of female friendships. Through closer examination of their relationships, particularly the one Robins and Bell called a sisterhood, we see the nurturing functions of female friendships. This project explains some of the reasons why, despite being famous in their day, these women disappeared from history. It was not just because of male control of the theatre, but was also a product of their own desires to protect themselves. Secrecy had served them well in the 1890s, but their fame faded as even friends forgot them. Yet, since female socialization taught them to be group-focused, these women’s stories are highly pertinent to the history of the theatre, an art form that is collaborative by its nature. Through study of their work and their relationships, we can fill some gaps in theatre history, women’s history, and nineteenth-century history, adding resonance to their voices that may carry to coming generations.

Gani, Safiyyah. « The fortifying and destructive power of love in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series ». Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5304.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The aim of this study is to explore the importance of love in its various manifestations in the lives of the Harry Potter characters and its power to consequently influence the paths that they eventually choose to walk. Love is investigated as the reason behind the choice between good and evil as well as paradoxically both a fortifying as well as a destructive force. Furthermore, it attempts to examine the importance that love plays in the healthy or dysfunctional development of the characters. Numerous philosophies and theories that span two different eras will form the theoretical framework of this research paper. There will be a constant interplay between the theories and the main text, that is, the seven Harry Potter books that together represent the Harry Potter series. Additionally, the author‟s opinion acquired from invaluable fan interviews will be utilized in order to improve the understanding of the characters motivations. The introduction is a brief explanation of key terms and theories that are essential to the exploration of love in the Harry Potter series. The study comprises five chapters. The first three chapters are concerned with the three main manifestations of love represented in the series, namely; parental love, friendship and romance respectively. Chapter Four focuses on the adaptation of the novels into movies and the subsequent result that this has on the depiction of love. Chapter Five highlights the finding of the study conducted.

Résumé :
This chapter explores the mutual benefits of a critical friendship between two educators, one on the cusp and the other mid-teaching careers. This chapter is broken into three distinct areas: professional interactions, professional collaboration, as well as the realm of personal friendship. Through both academic and praxis-based shared interest in Process Drama (PD) in the English classroom in the Japanese university context, the relationship has developed professionally to include collaborative presentations and writing projects. These have, in turn, forced both to examine teaching beliefs within the context of the respective institutes’ administrative and student needs. This interrogation of deep-seated beliefs as personal language learners and professional educators seeking to best serve students through empowerment has been achieved through openness and honesty. This is an acknowledgement of ourselves as teacher-learners; fallible, yet willing to learn. Furthermore, this critical friendship has had profound effects on both educators in terms of job-seeking.
