Résumé :
Abstract The present paper analyses language used in forums about journeys by train, in particular focusing on their thematic and linguistic-functional characteristics. The choice of this type of forum is due to the fact that travelers are more and more interested in travelling by train because of various factors such as economy, environmental protection and the desire for a comfortable means of transport. The paper focuses on the forum https://rail.cc/de/forum and it examines 100 German and 100 English postings, offering a contrastive analysis. The main questions of the investigation are as follows: 1) How are German and English postings structured according to their topics? 2) What kind of relationship exists between the language used and linguistic functions of the postings?

Résumé :
Derailments of freight cars occur for various reasons: breakdown of equipment or individual parts; maintenance deviations in the track superstructure; incorrect order of passing and making-up trains; violation of normal dynamic conditions, which occurs due to hunting and unfavorable traffic conditions on a curved track section. In order to avoid derailments and ensure a stability coefficient, the restrictions expressed using certain indicators are set. These indicators determine the conditions for lifting the wheel above the rail head, overturning the rail and widening the railway track. One of the most widely used restrictions is the restriction expressed in terms of the ratio of the lateral force acting on the wheel to the vertical force.Rolling stock derailment when the wheel flange is rolled onto the rail head, as a rule, is facilitated by longitudinal compressive forces. The presence of longitudinal forces in the train results in unloading the wheels moving along the outer rail line, and overloading the wheels moving along the inner rail line. The stability loss of freight cars as part of a train should be divided into two stages: stability loss of the body on suspension springs and the stability loss of the wheel set, which results directly in the derailment. The work is aimed to study the influence of longitudinal quasi-static compressive forces arising during stationary modes of train movement on the form of freight cars’ instability. The relevance of this study relates to the need to control the longitudinal forces arising during the train movement, taking into account the increase in speeds, masses and lengths of trains, especially freight trains, by in the locomotives power increase. The use of the above methodology will improve the stability of freight rolling stock, justify the cause of derailment, as well as develop and put into practice technical measures to prevent the lift of the carriages, widening and shear of the track.

Résumé :
L. F. Marsigli represented three archaeological structures on the map of Colonia Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, made in 1699 and published in 1726 – the city walls, the amphitheatre and a rectangular, double-walled building which encloses an empty space, and which has a square-shaped niche on one side (Pl. I/2). The map, compared in scale to the results of archaeological excavations and geophysical surveys shows an exact match with the currently known groundplan of the city wall, its northeastern corner and the amphitheatre. The third building may be identified as the centre of the provincial assembly (concilium provinciae)1 and the provincial imperial cult, namely the forum provinciae, that was situated within the territory of the Area sacra (Pl. I/1; Pl. II), approximately 20 metres to the northwest from the location given by Marsigli. The two textual fragments previously found in the area also support the assessment of the structure of forum provinciae. The dislocation of the third building on the map was presumably due to misprinting or Marsigli’s field error. Today, the area is still unexplored, only future archeological excavations can justify or refute the exact characteristics, structure and periodisation of the third building depicted on Marsigli’s map.

Résumé :
The paper reflects on the topic of learning outcomes in Higher Education. The emphasis on the education process and learning benefits students, faculty, and institution. The theme of learning outcomes in relation to instructional design and assessment becomes the subject of faculty development programs; a three-level training is hypothesized and discussed, starting with the IRIDI training program for faculties at the University of Turin. The first level is the exploration of learning outcomes’ topic, which can start from the syllabus development. The second level refers to the reinforcement of the use of learning outcomes in the didactic and assessment practices. The last level emphasizes the importance of providing faculty with specific training, with a collegial and institutional focus. This training model will be able to support and promote student-centered, inclusive, and quality teaching in Higher Education. Formare i docenti universitari a progettare e valutare secondo i learning outcomes: nuove sfide in Higher Education.

The maglev system is a technology that uses the repulsive force between magnets to float or levitate an object or vehicle. Maglev trains use electromagnets to counter the gravitational force of an object, so that the object can float in the air. With this technology, the resulting loss between the workpiece and the base can be eliminated. The technology used in this train is Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS). The research began by modeling the maglev system in the form of state space. Furthermore, the stability system model that has been built is analyzed. Finally, it is analyzed how the numerical simulation of an open loop without control is analyzed. The result of this research is that the floating system (maglev) is an unstable system if it is run in an open loop, so the maglev system requires sensors and controls in its operation.

Résumé :
In order to improve the safety of train traffic, we propose to introduce into practice a new type of rail circuits, fiber-optic rail circuits. Fiber optic cable is very sensitive to external shocks, vibration and deformation, which can play a crucial role in the detection of mechanical damage of rails and wheel sets and also to improve the positioning of the rolling stock. The branches of the fiber optic cable not only serve as a conductor of information, but also serve as a sensor, as they can perceive vibration. An OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) analyzes the backscattered light signal to determine the shape of the physical impact that caused the bending. From the time between the emission of the light signal and the receipt of the backscattered signal, the fault location is calculated. The authors offer the model of the system, which will check the security problems of the trains and the rail circuits. The software of the corresponding system is presented, using the simulation techniques. The authors present the pseudo code of the software. They also offer the testing environment for the software.

The urban and architectural project related to the construction of the Trajan Forum in Rome (106-113 AD) joins the tradition of its predecessors. However, its dimensions and the colossal work needed for its creation make it a one-of-a-kind project, which caused the transformation of the whole area between the Campidoglio and Quirinale hills. This study focuses on the methods of this transformation and on its impact on the proper Forum area, and on the rest of the city’s urban texture. It is an analysis of this big architectural project, beyond the public square, with particular attention to the collection of architectural solutions and to the complicated system of paths created around the imperial complex. The urban context was analysed in parallel, before and after the completion of the Forum, in order to understand better the architectural solutions adopted, and to integrate the new buildings in the pre-existing urban context. The objective is to chronologically reconstruct the whole urban setup of the area, and to determine to which extent the construction of the Trajan Forum conditioned the development of this part of the empire-period Urbs

Résumé :
The human brain is always searching for recognizable shapes, it is natural for us to always look for connections and try to get an overall sense of things and situations. But what if the form dissolves itself and instead creates a range between the more clear and intense to the blurred and defocused.By using an entanglement of lines that further out from the inner centre reduces its intensity, it will create an effect of a weak, unsettled edge that is hard to read. My project investigates this phenomena and how a mass of single components merge into a singular whole permeable structure that absorbs the program of the transit centre.By using the technique of this complex nested hierarchy of components will I create a variation of areas and nested pochés. These areas will work as the different climate zones that a transit station requires.

The intervention consists in the re-design of the Train Station and of the incorporated Bus Terminal, resolving the general connective tissue, and stimulating the public activity towards the sea side. The Terminal wants to be intended not only as a place of departure but also as an attractive place itself.

Ziebell, Jenna, Samuel Taylor, Tuoxin Cao, Jordan Harrison et Jonathan Lifshitz. « Rod microglia : elongation, alignment, and coupling to form trains across the somatosensory cortex after experimental diffuse brain injury ». BioMed Central, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/610191.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
BACKGROUND:Since their discovery, the morphology of microglia has been interpreted to mirror their function, with ramified microglia constantly surveying the micro-environment and rapidly activating when changes occur. In 1899, Franz Nissl discovered what we now recognize as a distinct microglial activation state, microglial rod cells (Stabchenzellen), which he observed adjacent to neurons. These rod-shaped microglia are typically found in human autopsy cases of paralysis of the insane, a disease of the pre-penicillin era, and best known today from HIV-1-infected brains. Microglial rod cells have been implicated in cortical 'synaptic stripping' but their exact role has remained unclear. This is due at least in part to a scarcity of experimental models. Now we have noted these rod microglia after experimental diffuse brain injury in brain regions that have an associated sensory sensitivity. Here, we describe the time course, location, and surrounding architecture associated with rod microglia following experimental diffuse traumatic brain injury (TBI).METHODS:Rats were subjected to a moderate midline fluid percussion injury (mFPI), which resulted in transient suppression of their righting reflex (6 to 10 min). Multiple immunohistochemistry protocols targeting microglia with Iba1 and other known microglia markers were undertaken to identify the morphological activation of microglia. Additionally, labeling with Iba1 and cell markers for neurons and astrocytes identified the architecture that surrounds these rod cells.RESULTS:We identified an abundance of Iba1-positive microglia with rod morphology in the primary sensory barrel fields (S1BF). Although present for at least 4 weeks post mFPI, they developed over the first week, peaking at 7 days post-injury. In the absence of contusion, Iba1-positive microglia appear to elongate with their processes extending from the apical and basal ends. These cells then abut one another and lay adjacent to cytoarchitecture of dendrites and axons, with no alignment with astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Iba1-positive rod microglial cells differentially express other known markers for reactive microglia including OX-6 and CD68.CONCLUSION:Diffuse traumatic brain injury induces a distinct rod microglia morphology, unique phenotype, and novel association between cells
these observations entice further investigation for impact on neurological outcome.

Using concepts of cognitive evolutionary theory, the author explores how narrative storytelling manifests itself in Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. The novella form is also discussed, focusing on its manipulation of linear time, its naturalization of supernatural elements, and its deconstruction of dichotomous relationships. Utilizing the novella's distinct structural and thematic elements, Johnson's text shows the myth of American expansionism and industrial progress and that of Kootenai holism in collision, resulting in a narrative renegotiation that seeks to affirm coexistence and complexity.

Résumé :
The world-wide development of new high-speed rail lines has led to more stringent design requirements for railway bridges, mainly because high-speed trains can cause resonance in the bridge superstructure. Dynamic simulations, often utilising time-consuming finite element analysis (FEA), have become essential for avoiding such problems. Therefore, guidelines and tools to assist structural engineers in the design process are needed. Considerable effort was spent at the beginning of the project, to develop simplified models based on two-dimensional (2D) Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. First, a closed-form solution for proportionally damped multi-span beam, subjected to moving loads was derived (Paper I). The model was later used to develop design charts (Paper II) and study bridges on existing railway lines (Paper III). The model was then extended to non-proportionally damped beams (Paper IV) in order to include the effects of soil-structure interactions. Finally, the importance of the interaction between the surrounding soil and the bridge was verified by calibrating a finite element (FE) model by means of forced vibration tests of an end-frame bridge (Paper V). Recommendations on how to use the models in practical applications are discussed throughout the work. These recommendations include the effects of shear deformation, shear lag, train-bridge and soil-structure interactions, for which illustrative examples are provided. The recommendations are based on the assumption that the modes are well separated, so that the response at resonance is governed by a single mode. The results of the work show that short span bridges, often referred to as `simple´ bridges, are the most problematic with respect to dynamic effects. These systems are typically, non-proportionally damped systems that require detailed analyses to capture the `true´ behaviour. Studying this class of dynamic system showed that they tend to contain non-classical modes that are important for the structure response. For example, the bending mode is found to attain maximum damping when its undamped natural frequency is similar to that of a non-classical mode.

Massive and heterogeneous data processing and analysis have been clearly identified by the scientific community as key problems in several application areas. It was popularized under the generic terms of "data science" or "big data". Processing large volumes of data, extracting their hidden patterns, while preforming prediction and inference tasks has become crucial in economy, industry and science.Treating independently each set of measured data is clearly a reductiveapproach. By doing that, "hidden relationships" or inter-correlations between thedatasets may be totally missed. Tensor decompositions have received a particular attention recently due to their capability to handle a variety of mining tasks applied to massive datasets, being a pertinent framework taking into account the heterogeneity and multi-modality of the data. In this case, data can be arranged as a D-dimensional array, also referred to as a D-order tensor. In this context, the purpose of this work is that the following properties are present: (i) having a stable factorization algorithms (not suffering from convergence problems), (ii) having a low storage cost (i.e., the number of free parameters must be linear in D), and (iii) having a formalism in the form of a graph allowing a simple but rigorous mental visualization of tensor decompositions of tensors of high order, i.e., for D> 3.Therefore, we rely on the tensor train decomposition (TT) to develop new TT factorization algorithms, and new equivalences in terms of tensor modeling, allowing a new strategy of dimensionality reduction and criterion optimization of coupled least squares for the estimation of parameters named JIRAFE.This methodological work has had applications in the context of multidimensional spectral analysis and relay telecommunications systems

Résumé :
<p>This paper presents the results of a continuous monitoring system placed on the Metro line in Vienna, Austria, aimed at assessing the long-term behaviour of massive train wheels. Until today, conventional resilient wheels are used on Viennese metro trains. However, it is planned to substitute this type of wheels with massive wheels.</p><p>Since 2016 three train sets were therefore equipped with massive wheels and let circulate in the underground railway network under trial runs. Nine measuring systems were installed within the metro network in the form of monitoring stations to continuously record data during these train passages. Selected indicators are permanently measured, post-processed and transmitted in real time to a web-interface accessible. On the basis of approximately 2,000 daily recorded trains, statistical analysis has been performed, thus providing information on train condition and on the impact of massive wheels.</p>

Parent, M. Polyphase glacial dynamics and clast dispersal patterns in glaciofluvial and glacial sediments in north-central Quebec, with application to diamond exploration. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/331425.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The regional dynamics of shifting ice-flow directions and ice-divide migrations were estab-lished in the Saindon-Cambrien corridor of north-central Quebec by two independent means: 1) the measurement of crosscutting striations; and 2) the glacial dispersal patterns of distinctive lithological markers from outliers of the Sakami Formation. Clasts from two outliers were successively dispersed to the north-northeast, northwest, and west-southwest. They form composite dispersal trains consisting of 200 km long ribbon-shaped trains toward the west-southwest and palimpsest trains caused by the westward re-entrainment of dispersal trains formed during earlier flow phases. Widespread evidence of basal sliding and abrasion recorded by striations associated with successive flow systems, together with the development of long dispersal trains, indicates that protracted warm-based conditions prevailed in north-central Quebec. This improved understanding of glacial dynamics and dispersal in the core region of the eastern Laurentide Ice Sheet helps us to interpret the distribution of legacy kimberlite indicator mineral data sets in eskers and to assess the diamond prospectivity of the Saindon-Cambrien corridor.

Aguiar, Brandon, Paul Bianco et Arvind Agarwal. Using High-Speed Imaging and Machine Learning to Capture Ultrasonic Treatment Cavitation Area at Different Amplitudes. Florida International University, octobre 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25148/mmeurs.009773.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The ultrasonic treatment process strengthens metals by increasing nucleation and decreasing grain size in an energy efficient way, without having to add anything to the material. The goal of this research endeavor was to use machine learning to automatically measure cavitation area in the Ultrasonic Treatment process to understand how amplitude influences cavitation area. For this experiment, a probe was placed into a container filled with turpentine because it has a similar viscosity to liquid aluminum. The probe gyrates up and down tens of micrometers at a frequency of 20 kHz, which causes cavitations to form in the turpentine. Each experimental trial ran for 5 seconds. We took footage on a high-speed camera running the UST probe from 20% to 35% amplitude in increments of 1%. Our research examined how the amplitude of the probe changed the cavitation area per unit time. It was vital to get a great contrast between the cavitations and the turpentine so that we could train a machine learning model to measure the cavitation area in a software called Dragonfly. We observed that as amplitude increased, average cavitation area also increased. Plotting cavitation area versus time shows that the cavitation area for a given amplitude increases and decreases in a wave-like pattern as time passes.

Résumé :
The article presents the implementation of future agricultural engineers’ training technology in the informational and educational environment. To train future agricultural engineers, it is advisable to form tutorials for the study of each discipline in the conditions of informational and educational environment. Such tutorials are an assistance in mastering both theoretical material and course navigation, where interactive electronic learning tools are presented to perform tasks in the informational and educational environment. Higher education applicants perform such tasks directly in the classroom with the help of gadgets or personal computers. The final grade is formed from the scores obtained in the classroom and the rating of higher education applicants while studying in the informational and educational environment. The outlined approach is able to help in the quality of learning content. The use of interactive audiovisual online tools allows to get acquainted with the theoretical, practical and experimental provisions clearly, it is important for the training of future agricultural engineers. At the end of the experiment, it can be argued that the developed technology increases the level of motivation and self-incentive to work in the informational and educational environment. The application of the presented technology provides an opportunity to combine the educational process in the classroom with learning in the informational and educational environment, forms analytical abilities and competencies in professional activity. The reliability of the obtained results was checked using the λ Kolmogorov-Smirnov criterion. It is determined that when using this technology in the educational process, the indicators in the experimental group increased, which displays the effectiveness of training bachelors in agricultural engineering in the conditions of informational and educational environment.

Egypt : NGOs need to join forces to end FGC. Population Council, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2000.1027.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Until recently, the practice of female genital cutting (FGC) has been nearly universal in Egypt. However, a 1998 national survey found the first signs of a decline in the practice among adolescents since 1994. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working in community development, health, and women’s rights have played a leading role in advocating eradication of FGC in Egypt. To document and assess the impact of anti-FGC programs, the Population Council conducted an assessment from August 1999 to February 2000. Researchers telephoned numerous Egyptian NGOs to identify those most actively involved in anti-FGC programs. Then they conducted in-depth interviews with officials of 15 NGOs, as well as staff of the Ministry of Health and Population, UNICEF, and the United Nations Population Fund. As concluded in this brief, 15 Egyptian nongovernmental organizations are actively involved in programs to eradicate the practice of female genital cutting. To make these programs more effective, NGOs should form coalitions, engage in advocacy, train activists in communication skills, and evaluate the impact of their programs.

The Launch of the National Rollout of the Municipal Innovation Maturity Index (MIMI) (A tool to measure innovation in municipalities). Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/assaf.2021/0076.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The MIMI project was initiated by the DSI in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the HSRC and UKZN. The purpose of this initiative was to develop an innovative tool capable of assessing and measuring the innovation landscape in municipalities, thus enabling municipalities to adopt innovative practices to improve service delivery. The outcome of the implementation testing, based on the participation of 22 municipalities, demonstrated the value and the capacity of MIMI to produce innovation maturity scores for municipalities. The digital assessment tool looked at how a municipality, as an organisation, responds to science, technology and innovation (STI) linked to service delivery, and the innovation capabilities and readiness of the municipality and the officials themselves. The tool is also designed to recommend areas of improvements in adopting innovative practices and nurturing an innovation mindset for impactful municipal service delivery. The plan going forward is to conduct learning forums to train municipal officials on how to use the MIMI digital platform, inform them about the nationwide implementation rollout plan and support municipal officials to engage in interactive and shared learnings to allow them to move to higher innovation maturity levels. The virtual launch featured a keynote address by the DSI Director-General, Dr Phil Mjwara; Prof Mehmet Akif Demircioglu from the National University of Singapore gave an international perspective on innovation measurements in the public sector; and messages of support were received from MIMI partners, delivered by Prof Mosa Moshabela, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and Prof Leickness Simbayi, Acting CEO of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). It attracted over 200 attendees from municipalities, government, business and private sector stakeholders, academics, policymakers and the international audience. @ASSAf_Official; @dsigovza; #MIMI_Launch; #IID
