Résumé :

The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore and find out the criteria that leaders of corporate boards in Ghana consider in appointing non-executive directors. Twenty for-profit corporations made the sample size for interviews and observations. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with convenient and willing board chairmen. The interviews involved open-ended questions about competencies and qualifications looked for in board member candidates. Data from secondary sources such as curriculum vitae of existing non-executive board members were reviewed to validate data. The QSR NVivo 8 software product was used to code and analyze the research data into themes. QSR is a software package that analyzes data for themes in words, sentences, or paragraphs of electronic written data, often discovering themes the human eye could miss. Nine themes emerged representing criteria considered in selecting and appointing non-executive directors. The criteria identified were independent mind, expertise and experience, availability of the prospective appointee, entrepreneurial orientation, proving integrity, leadership orientation, good academic background, networking advantage, and trusted friends. The results of the research may ensure the appointment of right persons to corporate boards for good corporate governance in Ghana and high profitability in organizations. The Ghana government may incorporate in the corporate governance regulations standard criteria for appointment of non-executive directors to all boards of organizations.

The purpose of this study was to seek an understanding of the characteristics of successful college and university programming boards (CUPBs). Specifically, I explored the organization and management; human, financial, and facility resource; campus and community relationship; program; mission; assessment and self-evaluation; and leadership characteristics of CUPBs. For purposes of this study, successful programming boards were defined and identified by professionals who work in this area of student affairs administration. To obtain the sample for this study, student affairs professionals who work with college and university programming boards and are members of the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) were contacted. Members were asked to identify successful programming boards in their NACA region. Based on the programming boards identified through this process, the most successful programming boards for each of the seven NACA regions were identified. There were 22 total programming boards included in the study's sample. An Institutional Profile (IP) form was created with items that related to the research questions posed in this study. Document analysis was conducted on texts and reports obtained from advisors of the sample's programming boards. Additional information was obtained through interviews with these advisors. Responses that were qualitative in nature were analyzed and assigned to response categories. The data that were quantitative in nature were analyzed by calculating frequency and/or range and mean scores. The data revealed significant results for each of the seven characteristics explored in the study. The findings suggest ways to structure and staff CUPBs, how to select and train student leaders, how to manage human and financial resources, how to manage facilities, and the types and numbers of programs successful CUPBs sponsor. Recommendations about the mission of successful CUPBs were identified, as were ways to assess outcomes and advise the programming board. Collectively, the results describe the elements of successful CUPBs. These elements can be used to establish standards of practice for such boards and the staff who manage them.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the mandatory in-service training in Tennessee for all local board of education members. The primary focus of this study was to determine if the board members' or superintendents' responses about the training agencies, content, or applicability of any Academy indicated any continuing (long-term) impact on the actions of board members when they returned to their local boards of education. The secondary concern of this study was to determine if the responses were significantly differentiated between the positions of board member and superintendent or among the demographic characteristics defined in the study. All 959 board of education members and 136 superintendents of schools were mailed a questionnaire to return anonymously to evaluate the legislatively mandated School Board Training Academies conducted over the past 4 years. Six research questions were answered and 23 null hypotheses were tested at the.05 level of significance. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Two-Sample Test or the Chi-Square Comparison was used to analyze the comparison between board members' and superintendents' scores or among the demographic strata. All nine Academies were compared according to each of the nine demographic characteristics. The average demographic characteristics of Tennessee board members are very similar to the average demographic characteristics of board members in the nation as a whole. There are significant differences among board members' evaluation scores stratified by six of the demographic characteristics. There were only two demographic characteristics for which there were any significant rating differences among superintendents. The Academies were rated positively for their effectiveness and their continuance was recommended. Specific improvements, expansion, and enhancement of the process were suggested.

Due to various corporate scandals and failures, there has been a renewed interest on the role of boards in the performance of firms. This thesis examines the relationship between the key board characteristics and firm performance. Unlike most studies on boards which predominantly use only financial variables affecting governance, I take a different approach by combining them with non-financial variables. This combined set of variables is used for theoretical and empirical modelling. Based on the extant literature, I develop a conceptual framework and a set of hypotheses to examine the relationship between board characteristics and firm performance. Board characteristics considered in this research include board size, director ownership, CEO duality, gender diversity, educational qualification of board members and number of board meetings. Additionally, I use board size as a moderating variable to examine how the effect of other board characteristics is contingent on board size. Firm performance is measured by return on assets. I test my hypotheses on a longitudinal sample of 156 firms over a four year period from 2004 to 2007. My sample includes all firms listed on New Zealand stock exchange as on November 2007. Empirical analysis is undertaken using Generalised Least Squares analyses. The findings of the study show that board characteristics such as board size, CEO duality and gender diversity were positively related with firm performance, where as director ownership, board meetings and the number of board members with PhD level education was found to be negatively related. Board size was found to be moderating some of these relationships, indicating the critical role being played by board size in the design and role of corporate boards. The findings also provide partial evidence to different governance theories, further indicating the need for theoretical pluralism to gain insights into boards’ functioning. The study contributes to the understanding of board-performance link by examining both the traditional variables such as board size, CEO duality, and number of board meetings as well as other organisational attributes such as gender diversity and competence variables represented by women and PhD holders, respectively. The theoretical framework and the findings of my thesis are expected to stimulate scholars for further research to identify the contingency conditions upon which the board characteristics and firm performance may be dependent.

The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines for small school divisions in Virginia to use in preparing an orientation program which would meet the needs of the new school board members. These guidelines addressed state and local concerns which had been identified through the review of literature and a questionnaire which was completed by superintendents and school board members from small school divisions in Virginia. The questionnaire was distributed to all superintendents and school board members from school divisions with fewer than five thousand students. The contents of the guidelines were determined by those items which were identified as being essential by 50 percent or more of at least one of the respondent groups. The results from this study indicated that school board members and superintendents do agree on the majority of items that were essential to an orientation program for new school board members. Thirty-eight of the sixty-nine items were regarded as essential by both respondent groups. There were eight areas in which the superintendents and school board members disagreed. These areas were also included in the guidelines. As a result of this study a set of curriculum guidelines was developed which would assist small Virginia school divisions in preparing an orientation program for new school board members. The ultimate aim of these guidelines was to improve the effectiveness of the new school board member.

Supporters of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), founded in 1987, hoped that its certification process would create a cadre of publicly recognized master teachers who would take on professional roles that have traditionally been the responsibility of administrators rather than teachers. Such a change would allow teaching to become a true profession, regulated collegially instead of bureaucratically. A national survey of national board certified teachers (NBCTs) administered in 2001 found little evidence that they were in fact taking on new professional roles. This study examines fifteen schools with large numbers of NBCTs in three North Carolina school districts to determine if NBCTs in these exceptional places are gaining new professional roles, and what factors are enabling or preventing that change. Telephone interviews were conducted with state level officials in North Carolina, district level officials in each of the school districts, and one NBCT, the principal, and one non-NBCT at each school. Interviews were transcribed and coded for analysis. The results indicate that NBCTs in these schools are not taking on significant new professional roles as a result of their certification, and suggest two reasons for this lack of change. One is structural: the NBPTS, the state of North Carolina, and the three school districts studied appear to have narrowed the focus of national board certification so that it is concerned primarily with identifying and rewarding excellence in classroom teaching. This study found few explicit attempts to use NBCTs in professional leadership roles or to provide them with opportunities for professional leadership in addition to classroom teaching. Another concerns the perceived validity of the certification process: board certification is not broadly accepted among study respondents as a consistent and accurate designation of teaching excellence. The results of this study also raise questions about the persistence of egalitarian norms among teachers in schools with significant numbers of NBCTs.

Nas instalações elétricas de baixa tensão de uma planta industrial está concentrado grande parte do custo necessário para sua construção. Nesse contexto, os cabos elétricos são o item mais relevante e poucas iniciativas visando sua redução têm sido notadas. Apesar dos limites impostos pelas normativas vigentes e pelos próprios usuários dessas plantas, existem medidas que podem levar a redução do custo dos cabos elétricos, entre elas, a alocação inteligente dos quadros de distribuição na baixa tensão. O objetivo desse trabalho é definir uma metodologia para o posicionamento ótimo desses quadros de distribuição, minimizando o custo dos cabos elétricos dentro de uma área onde as cargas a serem alimentadas estão posicionadas de modo fixo. São definidas algumas restrições ao posicionamento dos quadros e também é preparada uma interface gráfica que facilita a interpretação dos resultados. Faz-se então uma comparação dos resultados obtidos com dados reais de uma instalação industrial cujo projeto básico fora realizado da forma tradicional, sem uso de qualquer técnica inteligente para a alocação dos quadros de distribuição. Dessa comparação nota-se que o potencial de redução pode alcançar mais de 40 porcento do custo dos cabos elétricos previsto pelo projeto básico. A redução na quantidade de cabos elétricos trás vários efeitos colaterais positivos, entre eles a redução das perdas por efeito Joule e a redução nas emissões de CO2 cujos impactos são mensurados também. Por fim, são lançadas ideias para a evolução da metodologia de modo que sua aplicação seja mais abrangente e simples, preparando-a para o uso em qualquer situação, como uma nova ferramenta dos projetos elétricos.
In electrical installations of low voltage of an industrial plant is concentrated much of the cost required for its construction. In this context, the electrical wires are the most important item and few initiatives aimed at their reduction has been noted. Despite the limitations imposed by current regulations and by the users of these plants, there are steps that can lead to reducing the cost of electric cables, among them the intelligent allocation of switchboards at low voltage. The aim of this study is to define a methodology for the optimal positioning of these distribution boards, minimizing the cost of electrical cables within an area where the loads to be fed are positioned permanently. A graphical interface that facilitates the interpretation of results are set some restrictions on placement of tables and is also prepared. Then it makes a comparison of the results with real data of an industrial installation whose basic design was done the traditional way, without using any smart technique for allocation of the switchboard. This comparison we note that the reduction potential can reach more than 40 percent of the cost of electric cables provided by the basic design. The reduction in the amount of electrical cables behind several positive side effects, including reducing losses by Joule effect and the reduction in CO2 emissions whose impacts are measured as well. Finally, ideas are thrown to the evolution of the methodology so that their application is more comprehensive and simple to prepare it for use in any situation, as a new tool of electrical projects.

The goal of this thesis is to design a coprocessor expansion board for an On Board Computer (OBC) using Commersial Off The Shelf (COTS) components. This is done in order to meet the increasing demand of more processing power as spacecrafts become more autonomous. After evaluating a number of different options, the LS1046A from ARM was chosen as the processing unit. This would increase the processing power from the current 110 Dhrystone Million Instructions Per Second (DMIPS) to a theoretical 22 560 DMIPS. The schematic was designed in DxDesigner, and after the layout was completed signal integrity simulations were performed in HyperLynx. After modifications to termination resistances, the simulations showed good signal integrity confirming proper routing of the signals. After receiving the manufactured Printed Circuit Board (PCB) with all components mounted, some tests could be performed confirming that the power distribution and the system clock was functioning properly.

This thesis reviews progress toward an understanding of the processes involved in the solution of spatial problems. Previous work employing factor analysis and information processing analysis is reviewed and the emphasis on variations in speed and accuracy as the major contributers to individual differences is noted. It is argued that the strategy used by individuals is a preferable explanatory concept for identifying the cognitive substratum necessary for problem solving. Using the protocols obtained from subjects solving The Minnesota Paper Form Board (Revised), a test commonly regarded as measuring skill in spatial visualization, a number of different strategies are isolated. Assumptions as to the task variants which undergird these strategies are made and tested experimentally. The results suggest that task variants such as the size of the stimulus and the shape of the pieces interact with subject variables to produce the operating strategy. Skill in problem solving is revealed in the ability to structure the array, to hold a structured image and to reduce the number of answers requiring intensive processing. The interaction between task and subject variables results in appropriate or inappropriate strategies which in turn affect speed and accuracy. Results suggest that strategy formation and usage are the keys to explaining individual differences and an heuristic model is presented to explain the performance of individual subjects on the problems involved in the Minnesota Paper Form Board. The model can be used to predict performance on other tests; and as an aid to teaching subjects experiencing difficulties. The model presented incorporates strategy variation and is consequently mores complex than previously suggested models. It is argued that such complexity is necessary to explain the nature of a subject's performance and is also necessary to perform diagnostic evaluation. Certain structural -features of the Minnesota Paper Form Board are questioned and suggestions for improvement included. The essential explanatory function of the strategy in use makes the prevalent group administration approach suspect in the prediction of future performance in spatial or vocational activity.

As the performance of digital electronic components improves, maintaining the integrity of high-frequency signals through circuit boards becomes increasingly challenging. The dimensions and material parameters of in-plane circuit board features, such as striplines, microstrips and co-planar waveguides are tuned to control signal impedance. Conventional multi-layer vertical interconnects, which connect between board layers, are not impedance matched to the in-plane signal traces. Multi-connection vias, developed in this thesis, provide a method for matching the impedance of vertical and in-plane features by forming co-cylindrical waveguides. Solutions from a high-frequency full-wave solver provide insight into field interactions within multi-connection vias; and results from these simulations and signal integrity experiments indicate impedance "tuneability" by adjusting the multi-connection via dimensions. The results also suggest that features can be impedance-matched independent of via diameter. Multi-connection vias are formed by creating distinct conductor paths within cylindrical plated through-holes. The thesis explores several alternative manufacturing methods for fabricating these features. A specialized broaching machine and carbide-insert broaches were used to manufacture multi-connection vias for signal integrity experiments. Models of the broach tool and cutting force simulations resulted in several iterations of the broach design.
(cont.) Broaching multi-connection vias is challenging due to the small diameters and high aspect ratios of plated through-holes, as well as the unique copper-epoxy/resin material. Since the broaching process prefers larger plated through-holes to permit larger broach tools, a new method was developed to analyze the cumulative connection density of multi-connection via arrays. Multi-connection vias provide fertile ground for the development of corollary electronic products. Simulations for connector launches indicate that via impedance control can extend to board-mounted devices and connectors. Products that may benefit from multi-connection vias include by-pass capatrs, IC packages, test probes and pogo pins. The thesis presents a road map for commercializing multi-connection vias. Este tema resulta sumamente relevante de investigar en tanto se trata de un nuevo mecanismo en el cual las controversias son resueltas durante la ejecución de la obra, significando así aparentemente una prontitud en la decisión. En esta investigación, se parte del análisis del sector de la construcción y del contrato de obra pública para posteriormente analizar la experiencia de la JRD en el ámbito internacional y de cómo este mecanismo ha sido recogido en el ámbito nacional. Se concluye que pese a todos los beneficios propios de la JRD, éste resulta ser solo un mecanismo pre-arbitral, toda vez que la decisión de la Junta no tiene carácter de cosa juzgada como sí lo tiene el laudo arbitral, por lo que como está diseñada la JRD, se obtendrá una decisión susceptible de ser examinada y revisada en un arbitraje, lo que podría significar un efecto contrario al que se busca con la aplicación de la JRD.

A detailed study of the characteristics of vibratory and air agitation including cathode reciprocation methods for electrodeposition processes and their application for plating of composites and printed circuit boards has been carried out. In tanks agitated by air bubbles, it was found that the enhancing effect of air bubbles on the mass transfer coefficient is a function of the gas voidage fraction, irrespective of the absolute values of the liquid flow velocity, the gas flow rate and the gas distributor employed. A sensor based on limiting current density characteristics of a wire tip electrode has been shown to be capable of measuring local variations of agitation and its effect on coating thickness variations during electrodeposition. The effectiveness of agitation is expressed as an enhancement factor.

This constructivist-interpretivist research examined actors’ attitudes towards the prospect of legislated gender quotas for ASX200 boards in Australia. Thematic analysis demonstrated ongoing resistance towards board gender diversity, a preference for maintaining the status quo, and limited desire for structural change. A stark polarisation between actors who support and oppose board gender quotas was uncovered. These findings advance the board diversity literature and have implications for the progression of board gender composition in Australia.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are core components of virtually every modern electronic device, from smartphones to servers. Accordingly, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) has become core to Flex, a leading electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company. As the EMS industry continues to automate the PCBA process, it captures more data and creates opportunities to leverage this data and to generate value through analytics. One such promising opportunity is using defect prediction to improve downstream yields. For instance, x-ray inspection, which mostly detects solder defects, has a yield of about 97% for one of Flex's automated PCBA lines, and an improvement even to just 98% would create significant cost savings. Given this opportunity, this project aims to use the new data captured by the first steps in the automated PCBA process to predict solder defects that are usually identified during inspection, several days after the board begins the PCBA process. Specifically, the proposed boosted trees model uses data on 20,000 solder pads to predict whether an entire board will fail a downstream x-ray test. Other, more granular models are also studied, as well as other predictive models such as logistic regression and convolutional neural network models. The model is able to identify defective PCBs with an AUC of 0.74 and improve x-ray inspection yields from 97% to 98%, using one PCBA line at Flex as a case study. A second additional use case would reduce the number of x-ray inspection machines needed. Furthermore, a pilot implementation demonstrated that the model works well enough to enable these savings to be realized in practice. At the site where this study was conducted, these two use cases are estimated to produce significant savings over the seven-year useful life of the PCBA machinery. Since Flex has over 1,500 PCBA sites, the results of this case study suggest that there is potential to scale these analytics and related savings across the company.

A United States organization, called the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), was initiated to strengthen the pedagogy of teaching and, subsequently, improve student achievement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the NBPTS in terms of whether National Board Certified (NBC) teachers are effective in promoting positive classroom environments and student attitudes and in enhancing student achievement. The sample consisted of 927 Grade 8 and 10 science students from 12 secondary schools. Altogether, 443 students in 21 classes comprised the NBC teacher group and 484 students in 17 classes comprised the non-NBC teacher group. Students completed a learning environment questionnaire, the What Is Happening In this Class? (WIHIC), and an attitude scale based on the Test Of Science-Related Attitude (TOSRA). Scores from the science portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test FCAT, a state-mandated examination, were collected to measure achievement. This research is unique in that it is the first time that a learning environments study has included a sample of National Board Certified (NBC) and non-NBC teachers in order to compare their effectiveness in terms of secondary students' perceptions of their science learning environment, attitudes toward science, and science achievement. The study revealed that the revised version of the WIHIC and the modified attitude scale are valid and reliable instruments for assessing perceptions of the classroom environment and attitudes toward science among secondary science students in Miami-Dade County, Florida.In addition, a much stronger association with learning environment was found for students' attitude than for students' achievement. The contributions and significance of this study are not only that it adds to the area of research that pertains to the efficacy of NBC teachers, but it also adds to the field of learning environments research. This study is useful because it could be replicated to provide additional empirical evidence about the effect National Board teachers have on students in the classroom and add to the growth of educational data on the impact of National Teacher Certification and classroom learning environments research.

Vehicle uptime is getting increasingly important as the transport solutions become more complex and the transport industry seeks new ways of being competitive. Traditional Fleet Management Systems are gradually extended with new features to improve reliability, such as better maintenance planning. Typical diagnostic and predictive maintenance methods require extensive experimentation and modelling during development. This is unfeasible if the complete vehicle is addressed as it would require too much engineering resources. This thesis investigates unsupervised and supervised methods for predicting vehicle maintenance. The methods are data driven and use extensive amounts of data, either streamed, on-board data or historic and aggregated data from off-board databases. The methods rely on a telematics gateway that enables vehicles to communicate with a back-office system. Data representations, either aggregations or models, are sent wirelessly to an off-board system which analyses the data for deviations. These are later associated to the repair history and form a knowledge base that can be used to predict upcoming failures on other vehicles that show the same deviations. The thesis further investigates different ways of doing data representations and deviation detection. The first one presented, COSMO, is an unsupervised and self-organised approach demonstrated on a fleet of city buses. It automatically comes up with the most interesting on-board data representations and uses a consensus based approach to isolate the deviating vehicle. The second approach outlined is a super-vised classification based on earlier collected and aggregated vehicle statistics in which the repair history is used to label the usage statistics. A classifier is trained to learn patterns in the usage data that precede specific repairs and thus can be used to predict vehicle maintenance. This method is demonstrated for failures of the vehicle air compressor and based on AB Volvo’s database of vehicle usage statistics.

A study is hereby presented on system embedded photonic interconnect technologies, which would address the communications bottleneck in modern exascale data centre systems driven by exponentially rising consumption of digital information and the associated complexity of intra-data centre network management along with dwindling data storage capacities. It is proposed that this bottleneck be addressed by adopting within the system electro-optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs), on which conventional electrical layers provide power distribution and static or low speed signaling, but high speed signals are conveyed by optical channels on separate embedded optical layers. One crucial prerequisite towards adopting OPCBs in modern data storage and switch systems is a reliable method of optically connecting peripheral cards and devices within the system to an OPCB backplane or motherboard in a pluggable manner. However the large mechanical misalignment tolerances between connecting cards and devices inherent to such systems are contrasted by the small sizes of optical waveguides required to support optical communication at the speeds defined by prevailing communication protocols. An innovative approach is therefore required to decouple the contrasting mechanical tolerances in the electrical and optical domains in the system in order to enable reliable pluggable optical connectivity. This thesis presents the design, development and characterisation of a suite of new optical waveguide connector interface solutions for electro-optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs) based on embedded planar polymer waveguides and planar glass waveguides. The technologies described include waveguide receptacles allowing parallel fibre connectors to be connected directly to OPCB embedded planar waveguides and board-to-board connectors with embedded parallel optical transceivers allowing daughtercards to be orthogonally connected to an OPCB backplane. For OPCBs based on embedded planar polymer waveguides and embedded planar glass waveguides, a complete demonstration platform was designed and developed to evaluate the connector interfaces and the associated embedded optical interconnect. Furthermore a large portfolio of intellectual property comprising 19 patents and patent applications was generated during the course of this study, spanning the field of OPCBs, optical waveguides, optical connectors, optical assembly and system embedded optical interconnects.

This thesis will present my contributions to the development of the PiLUP board along with a general overview of its features and capabilities. The PiLUP board is a general-purpose FPGA-based readout board for data acquisition systems under development by the University of Bologna and the Instituto Nazionale Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and intended for high energy physics experiments, where the sheer amount of data generated by detectors often requires custom hardware solutions. This board was initially proposed for the next upgrade of the ATLAS Pixel detector. In this context its purpose would be to interface the Front-End readout chip RD53A with the FELIX card and provide advanced testing features such as an emulator for the RD53A that will help the development of the other parts of the data acquisition chain. Nonetheless, since the early stages of development, the hardware has been designed to offer great flexibility so that the same hardware platform could be directly used in other applications. To this purpose an important feature of the board is the great extendibility offered by the presence of different interfaces, such as and 3 FMC connectors (two low density and one high density), a PCI Express x8 interface, gigabit ethernet and an integrated SFP connector. The computing power of the PiLUP is provided by of two FPGAs, a Zynq-7 SoC and a Kintex-7 produced by Xilinx, intended to be used in master-slave configuration. In this case the Zynq, with its dual-core ARM processor and the possibility to run an embedded linux distribution, would be used as main interface with the other functionalities in the board. The main objective of this thesis is the development of such software and firmware control infrastructure, starting from the firmware solutions for the inter-FPGA communication to the low-level software to control the system.

Embedded devices such as Mobile phones, PDA’s etc. are getting more and more common in everyday life and professionally. The gain in mobility is lost in hardware power such as CPU speed, memory and battery life to mention a few. To be able to run software on those devices the common strategy has been to use a stripped down version of the software language. One of these languages is Java where Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) is a subset of the Java language. The purpose of this document is to provide details on the implementation of the full Java language, namely Java 2 Standard Edition 1.5, on embedded devices. With a full J2SE implementation the possibilities of using existing application or porting applications to Java will be broader.

This research investigates the most common used environments and virtual machines that are used in the market today. The different JVM’s are compared to each other and listed with positive and negative aspects regarding adaptation to an embedded device. Interviewing some costumers interested in this Thesis work has provided useful information on the usage and needs of the Java software language.

The target device for this Thesis is the CCP XS embedded computer manufactured by CC Systems. CCP XS typically uses the Windows CE operating system and comes equipped with 256Mb RAM memory. By the use of PERC Virtual Machine, PVM, I have demonstrated that J2SE can execute with acceptable performance on the CCP XS. A demo application written shows that execution of J2SE code, using feature not available in J2E, is possible on the device.

This way the massive amount of compute power which will be available can be inter-connected to realize future powerful advanced electronic systems. Today, electronic inter-connects between 3D chip-stacks, as well as intra-connects within 3D chip-stacks are approaching data rates of 100 Gbit/s soon. Hence, the question to be answered is how to efficiently design the communications infrastructure which will be within electronic systems. The present work describes the construction of a semi-analytical model for prediction of buckling loads in simply supported corrugated paperboard panels. The model accounts for transverse shear, due to the weakness of the core in such plates compared to the facings. This was done utilizing energy relations and rst order transverse shear. The panel was homogenised using laminate theory. A detailed model using FEM was derived in order to validate the predictive capabilities of the analytical model. Experimental testing was performed to estimate the accuracy of both theoretical models, and assess the limitation of the analytical model. All modes of analysis showed good agreement for cubic boxes. Further investigation into expanding the scope of the analytical model was carried out and commented on.

This report describes the product development thesis that was conducted as an end project in the Master programme Industrial Design at Jönköping University. The thesis has been about developing, designing and building an ironing board for compact living. The name for the product that has been developed is UNI and it is a multifunctional ironing board which can either be mounted on the wall or hanged over the door. When the ironing board is not in used, it can be folded up and will then act as a mirror. When the ironing board is folded down, parts of the mirrors frame will be folded down and act like a supporting leg for the ironing board. On the inside is shelves and hooks mounted. Here can the owner store small things like keys and jewelleries. To get the best final result, have the design process Bootcamp Bootleg been used. This design process is divided in to five different stages where different methods are used to help with moving the project forward. The CAD-programme SolidWorks 2014 was used to create the CAD-models and the renderings where made in the rendering programme Keyshot 5. The physical model which was made during this thesis, was made in a scale of 1:1. The materials that were used for the model were hard foam, metal, wood, acrylic mirror, wadding and fabric. This thesis has been performed in collaboration with the company Rörets Industrier AB located in Jönköping, Sweden.
Denna rapport beskriver examensarbete inom produktutveckling som gjordes som det slutliga projektet på Master programmet Industrial Design på Jönköpings universitet. Detta examensarbete har handlat om att utveckla, formge och bygga en strykbräda för compact living. Namnet på den produkt som blivit utvecklad är UNI och det är en multifunktionell strykbräda som kan monteras på en vägg eller hängas över en dörr. När strykbrädan inte används, kan den fällas upp och användas som en spegel. När strykbrädan är nedfälld kommer delar av spegels ram att fällas ner och fungera som ett stöttande ben. På insidan finns de hyllor och krokar monterat. Här kan ägaren förvara små föremål som nycklar eller smycken. För att få ett så bra resultat som möjligt, har design processen Bootcamp Bootleg använts. Denna process är uppdelad i fem olika steg där man använder olika metoder för att föra projektet framåt. CAD-programmet SolidWorks 2014 har använts för att skapa CAD-modellerna och renderingarna har gjorts i renderingsprogrammet Keyshot 5. Den fysiska modellen som gjorts under examensarbete, har gjorts i skala 1:1. Materialen som använts i vid bygget av modellen var hårt skum, metall, trä, spegelglas och tyg. Detta examensarbete har gjorts i samarbete med företaget Rörets Industrier AB lokaliserat i Jönköping, Sverige

This thesis describes a framework for the high level control of an autonomous unmanned spacecraft. Greater autonomy than currently exist is required for unmanned spacecraft to enable missions to distant planets and bodies. One reason for this is that the signal return time is too long to accommodate real-time control from the ground. A second reason is that spacecraft travelling to bodies where little is known of the environment (e.g. asteroids) must have the capability to respond to unplanned events. In addition, autonomy can help reduce mission operations costs, a very important factor in the current climate where more is expected from space missions at a lower cost. The thesis proposes a novel architecture for an autonomous unmanned spacecraft, based on Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI), and more specifically based on the multi-agent paradigm. The proposed model for spacecraft control is decentralised. In this architecture, the spacecraft is made up of agents; the traditional ground-based controller is one agent. The spacecraft is goal-driven; it receives high level goals from the ground. The planning and scheduling of activities to achieve these goals is carried out on-board the spacecraft. The spacecraft is also event-driven; it reacts to events that occur on-board the spacecraft as well as in the environment. A DAI architecture requires a co-ordination mechanism, and a communication structure. Also, distributed versions of algorithms must be provided. In this thesis, co-ordination with and without explicit communication and distributed scheduling were investigated, and a framework proposed for both these issues. An autonomous spacecraft must have inference capability for on-board decision making to enable it to respond to unplanned events. Probabilistic reasoning in the form of Bayesian networks was used to provide the spacecraft with the capability for on-board decision making. Situations may arise where the spacecraft must make decisions with uncertain or incomplete information. The issue of decision making with uncertain or incomplete knowledge (e.g. co-ordination without explicit communication) was investigated using domain specific scenarios. Spacecraft resources are typically very limited in capacity. On-board resource management should result in more efficient use of resources. A framework for an on-board resource manager was defined and implemented using reinforcement learning. A distributed version of the scheduling algorithm using reinforcement learning was developed. Thus, this thesis describes and investigates an architectural framework for a multi-agent approach to spacecraft control.

This thesis investigates the possibility to automate testing of PCBs with a sensor system.  This PCB testing is today done manually by placing PCBs in a test fixture that determines its condition. This test requires an operator to wait for the test to complete and then place the PCB in the correct section. If this process can be automated time could be saved and the risk of mishandling PCBs could be reduced. A sensors system is made that consists of an Arduino with micro switches, hall effect sensors, a scanner and a LiDAR. The sensor system is designed to achieve a set of requirements that is needed for automation. The sensor system is meant to communicate with a robot that moves the PCBs within a test environment. This test environment is also designed in this project. For the system to communicate with a robot a program is made to inform the robot about placement of PCBs within the test environment. The final system is able to achieve the requirements set for automation but further investigation is needed to make this into a fully scaled automated system.

Local school board members play a significant role as leaders of public education in the United States. As leaders, local school board members are charged with the responsibility to create an environment within their school districts that enable students to meet rigorous content knowledge and performance standards. The public's expectations of the local school boards have changed considerably in recent years, primarily due to the standards and accountability reform movement. In most states, local school board members are now being held accountable for student achievement based on annual standardized assessments. The increased expectations and scrutiny of local school boards have been accompanied with greater emphasis on preparation and training programs for local school board members. The purpose of this study was to investigate and report states' mandates and requirements for local school board training and to document the characteristics of training activities provided for local school board members across the United States. The design of this quantitative study included two surveys disseminated to two target populations. The first target population was comprised of the executive directors of each state's school boards association. The second target population included local school members who held leadership positions in their school boards association for their respective states. The study was designed to identify which states in the United States: (1) mandate training for local school board members with an enforcement provision; (2) mandate training for local school board members with no enforcement provision; and (3) do not mandate training for local school board members. The study explored whether or not there were differences in the perceptions held by local school board members regarding training pursuant the following variables: (1) length of service on the local school board; (2) education level; (3) gender (4) district size (5) whether the board member was elected or appointed; and (6) whether training in their respective states was mandated, mandated with an enforcement provision, or not mandated. Information was also requested relative to the characteristics of training activities provided for the local school board members. The findings from this study showed that the legal requirements for training of local school board members across the United States have remained relatively unchanged from those reported in previous research studies. There were minimal differences found in local school board members' perceptions about training in states that mandate training (with and without an enforcement provision) and states that do not mandate training. An analysis of data collected through a survey administered to a delimited population of local school board members indicated a preference for training through use of for small-group concurrent sessions. The respondents perceived that small group concurrent sessions was the most effective presentation format for training. Further analysis of data also found that the respondents perceived that regional meetings and school board retreats were effective formats for training. Findings from the study appear to suggest that local school board members participated in training whether it was mandated in their states or not. The findings also seem to imply that more emphasis and attention could be placed on the quality of the training provided for local school board members.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are used extensively in electronic products to connect assembled components within a system. The so-called vertical interconnect access (via) is a vertical hole or cavity in the PCB filled with metal to facilitate conductivity. The current trend, particularly for high technology products (e.g., 3D packaging), is to manufacture PCBs with high aspect ratio (AR) vias. Typically, the size of such a via is at the micrometer scale (this is why they are termed micro-vias). The most widely used technique for manufacturing micro-vias is electrodeposition of metal (e.g., copper), where the PCB is immersed into a plating cell filled with an electrolyte solution. Using standard conditions, electrodeposition usually does not produce micro-vias with the required quality. This is due to a lack of copper ion transport into the via. This has lead to studies of various ways of enhancing the ion transport. This thesis documents the results from a modelling study into the electrodeposition processes for fabricating high aspect ratio micro-vias. This includes basic electrodeposition and techniques that enhance ion transport such as forced convection (using a pump) and acoustic streaming (using transducers). In this work, a novel numerical method for explicitly tracking the interface between the deposited metal and the electrolyte is implemented and validated under the conditions of basic electrodeposition using experimental data. Results from a parametric study have established a set of design rules for micro-vias fabrication. When ion transport is enhanced by forced convection (e.g., pumping) in the plating cell, we apply a multi-scale modelling methodology that provides interaction between models at the macro level (the plating cell) and the micro level (the interior of a via). Numerical simulations can then be used to verify how ion transport into the micro-via is improved. These results can then be used to identify process conditions for the plating cell which will result in the required flow behaviour at the micro-via. Megasonic agitation can also be used to enhance electrolyte convection in the plating cell. This is achieved by placing megasonic transducers into the plating cell. This leads to several phenomena, one of which is known as the acoustic streaming. Models have been developed for predicting megasonic agitation both at the macro and micro-scales, and a number of designs have been investigated for both open and blind micro-vias.
