This paper explores the analysis of sound speeds in the longitudinal direction and their reduction to the reference moisture content w = 12 %. The sound speed cw was determined with Sylvatest Duo device. Moisture content of beech sawmill assortments (round timber: N = 16, logs: N = 2 × 16, structural boards: N = 54) in the range of 12 – 72 % was measured. For the analysis purposes, the sound speed was converted to reference conditions (c12, uref = 12%). A second-degree polynomial (parabola) with a regression equation of the form: c// = 5649 - 27,371 × w + 0.0735 × w2 was used to convert cw to c12, and correction of measured and calculated values was used as well. The sound speeds c12 in sawmill assortments (c12,round, c12,log, c12,board) were evaluated by linear dependences. Dependence was not confirmed for c12,round and c12,board1 (r = 0.168), in contrast for c12,round and c12,log2 the dependence is statistically very significant (r = 0.634). The results of testing showed that the most suitable procedure for predicting quality of structural timber is the first step round timber – log2, the second step: log2 - board2. More exact results of the construction boards were obtained from log2 than from log1. The sound speed is used in the calculation of dynamic modulus of elasticity (Edyn). EN 408 mentions the possibility of using dynamic modulus of elasticity as an alternative method in predicting the quality of structural timber.

Résumé :
Discussion boards are a form of social media which allow users to discuss topics and exchange information in a complex manner, in a number of different settings. As the popularity of such message boards has increased, communities of users have emerged, and several prominent types of social role have been identified, such as Question Answerer, Celebrity, Discussion Person and Topic Initiator. Recent studies have noted the structural similarity of the egocentric network of users assigned the same role by qualitative criteria. In this paper a methodology is developed with which to cluster together users with similar ego-centric network structures. This is achieved using a mixed membership formulation which allows for the fact that different groups of users may have characteristics in common. The method is then applied to data taken from boards.ie, a medium sized message boards website. Prominent clusters of users are identified and discussed, and illustrative examples of user behaviour provided. The type of interaction, both locally and globally, taking place within forums is examined.

In this workshop, Professors Nick Bontrager and Taylor Hokanson introduce the tools and services required to fabricate printed circuit boards, or PCBs. The process is more accessible than ever before, and is cheap enough to allow individuals to obtain functional prototypes, in small quantities, that are indistinguishable from similar PCBs that might be produced in the hundreds of thousands for industry or commercial applications. Using an “unpopulated” demonstration board designed by the workshop co-chairs, participants walk through all the steps needed to assemble and solder surface-mount components, finishing the event with a battery-operated, wearable, LED light display.

Résumé :

The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore and find out the criteria that leaders of corporate boards in Ghana consider in appointing non-executive directors. Twenty for-profit corporations made the sample size for interviews and observations. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with convenient and willing board chairmen. The interviews involved open-ended questions about competencies and qualifications looked for in board member candidates. Data from secondary sources such as curriculum vitae of existing non-executive board members were reviewed to validate data. The QSR NVivo 8 software product was used to code and analyze the research data into themes. QSR is a software package that analyzes data for themes in words, sentences, or paragraphs of electronic written data, often discovering themes the human eye could miss. Nine themes emerged representing criteria considered in selecting and appointing non-executive directors. The criteria identified were independent mind, expertise and experience, availability of the prospective appointee, entrepreneurial orientation, proving integrity, leadership orientation, good academic background, networking advantage, and trusted friends. The results of the research may ensure the appointment of right persons to corporate boards for good corporate governance in Ghana and high profitability in organizations. The Ghana government may incorporate in the corporate governance regulations standard criteria for appointment of non-executive directors to all boards of organizations.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to seek an understanding of the characteristics of successful college and university programming boards (CUPBs). Specifically, I explored the organization and management; human, financial, and facility resource; campus and community relationship; program; mission; assessment and self-evaluation; and leadership characteristics of CUPBs. For purposes of this study, successful programming boards were defined and identified by professionals who work in this area of student affairs administration. To obtain the sample for this study, student affairs professionals who work with college and university programming boards and are members of the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) were contacted. Members were asked to identify successful programming boards in their NACA region. Based on the programming boards identified through this process, the most successful programming boards for each of the seven NACA regions were identified. There were 22 total programming boards included in the study's sample. An Institutional Profile (IP) form was created with items that related to the research questions posed in this study. Document analysis was conducted on texts and reports obtained from advisors of the sample's programming boards. Additional information was obtained through interviews with these advisors. Responses that were qualitative in nature were analyzed and assigned to response categories. The data that were quantitative in nature were analyzed by calculating frequency and/or range and mean scores. The data revealed significant results for each of the seven characteristics explored in the study. The findings suggest ways to structure and staff CUPBs, how to select and train student leaders, how to manage human and financial resources, how to manage facilities, and the types and numbers of programs successful CUPBs sponsor. Recommendations about the mission of successful CUPBs were identified, as were ways to assess outcomes and advise the programming board. Collectively, the results describe the elements of successful CUPBs. These elements can be used to establish standards of practice for such boards and the staff who manage them.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the mandatory in-service training in Tennessee for all local board of education members. The primary focus of this study was to determine if the board members' or superintendents' responses about the training agencies, content, or applicability of any Academy indicated any continuing (long-term) impact on the actions of board members when they returned to their local boards of education. The secondary concern of this study was to determine if the responses were significantly differentiated between the positions of board member and superintendent or among the demographic characteristics defined in the study. All 959 board of education members and 136 superintendents of schools were mailed a questionnaire to return anonymously to evaluate the legislatively mandated School Board Training Academies conducted over the past 4 years. Six research questions were answered and 23 null hypotheses were tested at the.05 level of significance. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Two-Sample Test or the Chi-Square Comparison was used to analyze the comparison between board members' and superintendents' scores or among the demographic strata. All nine Academies were compared according to each of the nine demographic characteristics. The average demographic characteristics of Tennessee board members are very similar to the average demographic characteristics of board members in the nation as a whole. There are significant differences among board members' evaluation scores stratified by six of the demographic characteristics. There were only two demographic characteristics for which there were any significant rating differences among superintendents. The Academies were rated positively for their effectiveness and their continuance was recommended. Specific improvements, expansion, and enhancement of the process were suggested.

Résumé :
Due to various corporate scandals and failures, there has been a renewed interest on the role of boards in the performance of firms. This thesis examines the relationship between the key board characteristics and firm performance. Unlike most studies on boards which predominantly use only financial variables affecting governance, I take a different approach by combining them with non-financial variables. This combined set of variables is used for theoretical and empirical modelling. Based on the extant literature, I develop a conceptual framework and a set of hypotheses to examine the relationship between board characteristics and firm performance. Board characteristics considered in this research include board size, director ownership, CEO duality, gender diversity, educational qualification of board members and number of board meetings. Additionally, I use board size as a moderating variable to examine how the effect of other board characteristics is contingent on board size. Firm performance is measured by return on assets. I test my hypotheses on a longitudinal sample of 156 firms over a four year period from 2004 to 2007. My sample includes all firms listed on New Zealand stock exchange as on November 2007. Empirical analysis is undertaken using Generalised Least Squares analyses. The findings of the study show that board characteristics such as board size, CEO duality and gender diversity were positively related with firm performance, where as director ownership, board meetings and the number of board members with PhD level education was found to be negatively related. Board size was found to be moderating some of these relationships, indicating the critical role being played by board size in the design and role of corporate boards. The findings also provide partial evidence to different governance theories, further indicating the need for theoretical pluralism to gain insights into boards’ functioning. The study contributes to the understanding of board-performance link by examining both the traditional variables such as board size, CEO duality, and number of board meetings as well as other organisational attributes such as gender diversity and competence variables represented by women and PhD holders, respectively. The theoretical framework and the findings of my thesis are expected to stimulate scholars for further research to identify the contingency conditions upon which the board characteristics and firm performance may be dependent.

Résumé :
AbstractGender diversity on boards has become accepted as an important step to increase governance, risk assessment, and innovative thinking for companies. However, the arguments of finding merit-based candidates, a narrow definition of the board skills matrix, and the desire to add “who you know” have proven to be lasting obstacles for many female board candidates. This short case highlights the importance of making a conscious effort to expanding board searches past the usual networks to lead to boards with better decision-making abilities by adding female board directors.

AbstractThe case describes challenges that commonly arise between board and management in not for profits (NPFs), specifically, (a) questions of strategy related to changes in funding; (b) questions of culture related to the informality of relations among board members, management, and staff; and (c) questions of authority related to the disparity in involvement between volunteer board and professional management. Based on a description of how these challenges played out in an international NGO, an analysis of what was needed to address them, and a presentation of recommendations that were successfully applied, the case provides boards and managements of NPFs a blueprint for how to build stronger collaboration and offers students of NPFs a model for study.

The southern limit of thePrato della Valle space in the southern part of Padua's historical centre, inItaly, was continuously delimited by the boundary wall of the Santa Maria dellaMisericordia convent until the early twentieth century. Its presence was one ofthe elements that more than a century ago inspired the enlightened proposal byDomenico Cerato, a design professor at the University of Padua who had beeninspired by Andrea Memmo, the Superintendent of the Serenissima Republic ofVenice. The straight and continuous limit was replaced by the discontinuousarchitecture of the Foro Boario entrance, built in 1913 according to a designby Alessandro Peretti; this weakened the overall solution based on anelliptical shape, as did the communicative power of the nearby basilica ofSanta Giustina. The examination carried out dwells on these limits, simulatingthe virtual introduction of architecture with a continuous front to thesouthern edge of the Prato della Valle. One example of this type ofarchitecture is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art built in Kansas City between1930 and 1933, based on a design by the brothers Thomas and William Wight, andexpanded in 1999 based on a design by Steven Hall. The study generallyconfirmed that the compactness of the building's front newly provides strengthto Cerato's design, which gave a sense of unity to the general emptiness thanksto the certainty of its borders, and gives again the Basilica of Santa Giustinaits monumental size. This paper investigates the composition ofheterogeneous fragments, excerpts from the inventory of collective memory, andthe resulting unpredictable architecture in an urban context.

his study builds further on the paper presented at Virtus Corporate Governance Conference in May 2020, which explored the suitability and current relevance of board operating models. That paper highlighted challenges relating to the suitability of prevailing board operating models and posited some alternative board governance models as a provocation. While a considerable amount of academic and commercial research focuses on current board issues, performance drivers, etc., there is little apparent futuristic thinking, i.e., consideration of the broader changes that will be likely that could inform, modify, accelerate or possibly negate current thinking on what boards should be doing to be effective

Résumé :
A mood board provides a blueprint of the design process in a particular situational design problem. With the developments in the technology the process of making and presenting a mood board has now migrated to the various digital platforms. Traditionally designers in creative world used to make physical mood boards and this has changed as some now prefer the digital mood boards. The effectiveness of mood boards cannot be overemphasised especially in the fashion design world as they provide the visual impression which is a key source of inspiration to the designer. In this study ten final year students enrolled into a fashion design degree program were interviewed to assess their perception of digital and physical mood boards. The students were given a task to respond to a situational design problem and tasked to create their mood board physically and digitally and then evaluate the process they followed in coming up with their fashion mood boards. It was revealed that many students preferred the physical method as it is more engaging to the designer and informative though it is time consuming unlike as compared to the digital mood board. It was also revealed that due to the decrease in print media as technology is advancing sources of material that can be used in developing a physical mood boards have become less especially for the students who relied heavily on printed magazines. The study concluded that students need to be taught the process of making physical mood boards first before they do the digital mood boards and also there is need to improve individual graphic design skills so that they can improve quality of their digital mood boards.

Résumé :
Abstract Electronic manufacturing of circuit boards has undergone major changes in the last decade as new technologies have emerged and are perfected to replace older ones. A result of the increased board layout densities and higher levels of integration at the chip level is a dramatic increase in the value of circuit boards. The benefit is much more functionality in smaller boards, but the disadvantage is significant losses when a defective board must be scrapped. The same technology that has increased the density of the board functionality has made manual rework to correct manufacturing defects almost impossible. Higher levels of circuit integration in moving from VLSI to ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) have required more pin-outs on the packages which in turn has resulted in finer lead pitches and a change from through-hole mounting to surface mounting technology (SMT). These two changes, with the decreased interchip spacing, have necessitated the use of automation to perform reliable component replacement on defective boards. This paper discusses the complexities of integrating several automation technologies into a single robotic electronic remanufacturing workcell. Involved are vision guidance, control software development, and multiple special end-effector designs for the several required steps, including defective component removal, board cleaning, solder paste dispensing, component placement, and laser soldering [1].

Résumé :
The heat conduction equation and its boundary conditions were used to show that the planar and normal thermal conductivities of an orthotropic model of a printed circuit board were functions of source to board size ratio, top and bottom side boundary conditions, and thickness and thermal conductivity of each layer. Numerical solutions of the heat conduction equation were used to quantify the dependence on source to board size ratio and top and bottom boundary conditions. It was shown that the thermal conductivities were stronger functions of the source to board size ratio for smaller values of this ratio. This dependence was more pronounced for boards with stronger convection heat transfer on their top side, and for boards with thicker component side copper layer. The thermal conductivities were less sensitive to the variation of the convection heat transfer on the bottom side of the board.

Résumé :
Composite printed electronic boards are susceptible of structural failure or irreversible damage under thermally raised stresses. A thermal/structural finite element model is integrated in this study to enable the predictions of the temperature and stress distribution of vertically clamped parallel circuit boards that include series of symmetrically mounted heated electronic modules (chips). The board is modeled as a thin plate containing four heated flush rectangular areas that represent the electronic modules. The finite element model should be to able to accept the convection heat transfer on the board surface, heat generation in the modules, and directional conduction inside the board. A detailed 3-D CFD model is incorporated to predict the conjugate heat transfer coefficients that strongly affect the temperature distribution in the board and modules. Structural analyses are performed by a FE model that uses the heat transfer coefficients mentioned above, and structural elements capable of handling orthotropic material properties. The stress fields are obtained and compared for the models possessing different fiber orientations and fiber volume fractions. Appreciable differences in stress and thermal gradient fields were observed. The values of fiber volume fraction and fiber orientation at which to conduct analyses was guided by experimental design (DOE) ideas leading to a metamodel of the stress intensity and temperature gradient in the board which was used to represent the complied results of this study.

Résumé :
Abstract A detailed thermal analysis for the FSOI (Free Space Optical Interconnect) technology incorporating VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) devices is performed using commercially available software. FSOI is one of the latest technologies used to transmit information at high-speed to/from a microprocessor to memory device via photons. Due to large heat dissipation and compact packaging design, temperature and associated thermal strain/stress could reach high values in the FSOI assembly, causing serious reliability and quality problems. Several design options are investigated in order to provide optimal thermal management for the FSOI module, and maintain VCSEL temperatures within reasonable limits. Convective cooling results for both organic and ceramic boards are investigated. For designs with organic boards and without any thermal enhancement, the VCSEL temperature is well above the acceptable limit of 85°C at an ambient temperature of 30°C. The sequential inclusion of pedestals, board thermal vias, conductive rings between the optical modules, and metallic (Al) rods will significantly enhance the module thermal performance and reduce VCSEL temperature to 46°C. The presence of thermal vias in the organic board is critical; however, if the copper area percentage in the via block vs. the die area is above 3%, the VCSEL temperatures will remain constant. The ceramic boards provide a good thermal solution, as VCSEL temperatures remain below the upper limit without including any thermal vias in the board. The comparison between the effect of convective air speed on FSOI with ceramic versus organic boards reveals that the VCSEL temperature is slightly higher (less than 2°C) for the case incorporating a ceramic board. However, the ceramic board has no thermal vias, compared to the 100% copper via block in the organic board. Hence, the same results are accomplished with much less complexity in the ceramic substrate design alternative. This option is suggested for manufacturing purposes, with improved thermal performances.

Résumé :
Electroless Nickel/Electroless Palladium/Immersion Gold (ENEPIG), which has been used in component packaging, has been gaining attention as a surface finish for printed wiring boards. The primary role of a printed wiring board surface finish is to provide a solderable surface for assembly, creating a reliable solder interconnect. With regards to reliability, the increased use of mobile electronics has resulted in the need to consider the ability of interconnects to withstand repeated mechanical shocks. This paper examines the drop reliability of both SnPb and SAC305 interconnects formed on ENEPIG finished printed wiring boards. For comparison, the drop reliability test results for similar boards with Immersion Silver (ImAg) board finish are included. Test boards include BGA and resistor packages. The boards are dropped 500 times to achieve failure across the components. Failure analysis revealed that the dominant failure mode for BGA packages on the ENEPIG finish was cracking in the solder balls at the component interface, while for the ImAg finish the dominant failure mode was cratering in the board laminate below the solder pad. For the resistor packages, cracking through the solder joint at the component interface was the dominant failure mode for both the ENEPIG and ImAg finishes. The drop results indicate that both finishes are suitable for systems that could experience mechanical shock due to drop, with components soldered onto ENEPIG with a SAC 305 solder having the highest survivability. The combination of SnPb and ImAg was found to be superior to SAC 305 and ImAg.

Résumé :
Among the growing demands in corporate governance is better decision-making. The best board dynamics and focus on substantive business issues do not ensure effective boards functioning. Better decision-making implies the availability of quality information in adequate amounts. Better information does not exist on its own, it is necessary to design adequate information architectures in order to gather such information for effective board decision-making. Relying on solid information sources fosters awareness and lies the grounds for a better information architecture, so directors can do their job in a more effective and efficient way. What, why, how and where questions shall be raised in order to reach such goals, and the pillars for such architecture shall be laid down, by means of an adequate information architecture. This text provides clarity and the main thinking behind such information architecture design, ending with a set of recommendations
