Résumé :
Numerical simulations of forced convective incompressible flow in a horizontal plane channel with adiabatic walls over two isothermal tandem triangular cylinders of equal size are presented to investigate the effect of wall proximity of obstacles, gap space (i.e. gap between two squares), and Reynolds number. Computations have been carried out for Reynolds numbers of (based on triangle width) 100, 250, and 350. Results show that, wall proximity has different effect on first and second triangle in fluid characteristics especially in lower gap spaced, while for heat transfer a fairly same behavior was seen.

Résumé :
Millions of Rohingya were forced to flee their home and became effectively stateless due to countless violations and vulnerabilities in Myanmar. Their future has become jeopardized with a profusion of uncertainties; however, like other displaced people, Rohingya also got media attention when disaster and conflicts forced them to flee. This study aims to explore and classify the determinant factors that push the Myanmar government to force the Rohingya to flee. It also explores the indicators that moulded the South and Southeast Asian geopolitics. The research intends to categorize the conditions that triggered the Rohingya crisis, while the regional geopolitics capture Rohingya as a proxy to intensify the regional proximity. The study found that Rohingya seek opportunities for rights while financial and institutional inability bewildering to respond to their needs and increase the proximity of evasive commitments for the next move by the national and regional government. It is also evident that the plight of these people is precarious and vulnerable, where the provision of legal protection is rare. The great powers of this area intentionally avoid the issue and indirectly influence the countries to increase the regional security tension by supporting armament. This issue dramatically influences the domestic and regional politics of South and Southeast Asian countries and redefines their mutual relationships with the great powers. The study provides a glimpse of the polarization and politicization of the Rohingya minority in the regional security and geopolitical context.

A framework to study the influence of polydispersity on flow-induced diffusion in active microrheology is presented. It is found that diffusive behavior is set entirely and dually by the proximity with which two particles can approach one another, and by the extent to which this minimum approach distance is occupied by the hydrodynamic size of the forced particle.

Résumé :
Social distancing has been the central public health strategy for tackling the coronavirus pandemic worldwide. But the ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ order in the United Kingdom and the consequent closure of nurseries and schools also created an unprecedented degree of proximity within households. Based on interviews with mothers of young children in Scotland, this article provides early insight into the ways that mothers manage the forced intimacies of family life under lockdown and the opportunities they create through the innovative management of space and time. The result is a more expansive understanding of the family in contemporary Scotland and a notion of intimacy characterised as much by the necessity of distance and distinction as by proximity and mutuality.

Résumé :
Zn-air batteries have attracted considerable attention from researchers owing to their high theoretical energy density and the abundance of zinc on Earth. The modification of battery component materials represent a common approach to improve battery performance. The effects of cell design on cell performance are seldom investigated. In this study, we designed four battery structures as follows. Cell 1: close-proximity electrode, Cell 2: equal-area electrode, Cell 3: large zinc electrode, and Cell 4: air channel flow. The effects of four factors: (1) carbon paste, (2) natural and forced air convection, (3) anode/cathode area ratio, and (4) anode–cathode distance were also investigated. Results showed that the addition of carbon paste on the air side of 25BC increased cell power density under forced air convection. Moreover, cell performance also improved by increasing the anode/cathode ratio and by decreasing the anode–cathode distance. These four types of cells were compared based on the oxygen reduction reaction electrode area. Cell 3 displayed the highest power density. In terms of volumetric power density, the proximity cell (Cell 1) exhibited the highest power density among the cells. Therefore, this cell configuration may be suitable for portable applications.

Résumé :
The North Atlantic storminess of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) fully coupled climate simulations is generally less intense than that of their preindustrial (PI) counterparts, despite having stronger baroclinicity. An explanation for this counterintuitive result is presented by comparing two simulations of the IPSL full climate model forced by Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase 3 (PMIP3) LGM and PI conditions. Two additional numerical experiments using a simplified dry general circulation model forced by idealized topography and a relaxation in temperature provide guidance for the dynamical interpretation. The forced experiment with idealized Rockies and an idealized Laurentide Ice Sheet has a less intense North Atlantic storm-track activity than the forced experiment with idealized Rockies only, despite similar baroclinicity. Both the climate and idealized runs satisfy or support the following statements. The reduced storm-track intensity can be explained by a reduced baroclinic conversion, which itself comes from a loss in eddy efficiency to tap the available potential energy as shown by energetic budgets. The eddy heat fluxes are northeastward oriented in the western Atlantic in LGM and are less well aligned with the mean temperature gradient than in PI. The southern slope of the Laurentide Ice Sheet topography forces the eddy geopotential isolines to be zonally oriented at low levels in its proximity. This distorts the tubes of constant eddy geopotential in such a way that they tilt northwestward with height during baroclinic growth in LGM while they are more optimally westward tilted in PI.

Résumé :
In this essay, I use the term “intimacy” to refer to a sentiment of emotional proximity between two or more people. For queer theorist Lauren Berlant, intimacy principally “involves an aspiration for a narrative about something shared, a story about both oneself and others that will turn out a particular way” (281). At its core, an intimate practice is one that allows individuals to share themselves, to know each other more closely, and to work towards a narrative together. In the French society of the 1990s, the dominant heteronormative narrative deemed marriage and sex the most intimate acts largely for their procreative potential, as they produced the ideal emotional proximity and contained this proximity to the perfect nuclear family. In turn, as Berlant notes, queers are forced to find alternative methods of being intimate, whether it be their own non-procreative sex or emotionally invested practices that disavow sex completely. Although sex is heavily present within the work explored in this essay, it becomes clear that queer intimacy does not simply turn straight sex on its head by virtue of having gay participants, but rather that queer intimacy can hold a more subversive role by hinging on sexual objectification and producing emotional proximity on a larger, communal level.

Résumé :
Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, are being used in an increasing range of applications, including surveillance, search and rescue, and environmental tracking. However, unanticipated engine issues, engine failures, and breakdown of the flying surface may necessitate forced landings, putting the UAV and its surroundings in danger. If there are any obstacles in the way of the UAV's ability to land safely, such as buildings or trees, it must be able to return to its emergency landing place. Thus, in these emergency scenarios, automated technology that can identify safe landing places rapidly. This paper presents an innovative approach that adds feature extraction, including HOG, HSV, LBP, and SFIT. GMM, SVM and kernels that use machine learning techniques to instinctively select the proper UAV-forced landing places. Through the use of machine learning and feature extraction techniques, we raised our accuracy by 40% over the baseline. The proposed system integrates data from several sources, including topography maps, satellite images, and board sensors. The machine learning algorithms predict possible landing sites. Annotated datasets with factors including topographic height, land cover type, slope, and proximity to obstacles are used to train these algorithms. especially artificial neural networks, or ANNs.

Résumé :
Postmigrant conditions do not translate into easy access for migrants who arrive outside of the parameters of orderly migration. While European nations acknowledge the principle of asylum, massive efforts are made to prevent refugees from reaching the territory of the state where they could receive its protection. Even as their physical proximity to Europe increases, their legal proximity typically decreases. The novel Gehen, ging, gegangen (Go, Went, Gone) by German writer Jenny Erpenbeck depicts the experiences of non-privileged migrants whose tales of exile and displacement indicate that most of them will not be recognized as refugees. The play Die Schutzbefohlenen (Charges [The Supplicants]) by Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek contrasts the treatment of asylum seekers with real-life cases of two ‘VIP foreigners’ who were granted naturalization by the Austrian government. Both texts convey a blunt message: The narratives of those who do (and those who do not) arrive in Europe’s ‘postmigrant societies’ without legal status confirm that the gap between privileged and non-privileged migration is almost impossible to bridge.

Résumé :
Abstract A search of radar mosaics and level-II Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) data revealed 51 cold-season (October–April) bow echoes that occurred in the contiguous United States from 1997–98 to 2000–01. Proximity soundings indicated mean 0–2.5-, 0–5-, and 5–10-km shear values of 14, 23, and 19 m s−1, respectively. Mean CAPE was 1366 J kg−1. Most bow echoes developed from squall lines, groups of cells, or squall lines overtaking cells that originated in the path of the squall line. Overall, cell mergers occurred just prior to the development of 34 (67%) of the 51 bow echoes, and embedded supercells were present in the mature stage of 22 (43%) bow echoes. Nine severe, long-lived bow echoes (LBEs) were identified, and seven of these had damage paths that met derecho criteria. LBEs developed in strongly forced, dynamic synoptic patterns with low to moderate instability. As in previous observational studies, proximity soundings suggested that LBEs are possible within much wider ranges of sampled CAPE and shear than idealized numerical modeling studies have indicated. Cold-season bow echoes formed overwhelmingly (47 of 51) in southwesterly 500-mb flow. Twenty (39%) bow echoes formed in a Gulf coast synoptic pattern that produced strong shear and moderate instability over the southeastern United States. Nineteen (37%) and seven (14%) bow echoes, respectively, formed in the plains and east synoptic patterns, which resemble classic severe weather outbreak patterns. Four (8%) bow echoes developed in a northwest flow synoptic pattern that produced strong shear and moderate instability over the southern plains.

Résumé :
Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) is an emerging optical technique capable of probing samples at the nanometric level. With the NSOM technique, high spatial resolution is achieved by scanning a small light source (or collector) close to a sample surface. The light source is usually formed with special fiber optic probes that funnel light down to an aperture that is smaller than the optical wavelength. By positioning the aperture close to a sample, the emerging radiation is forced to interact with the sample before diffracting out. Therefore, the spatial resolution in NSOM is only limited by the size of the aperture and its proximity to the sample, and not the wavelength of the light as in conventional optical microscopy.Recently, we have been using the single molecule detection limits combined with the unique nature of the electric fields present near the NSOM tip aperture to probe molecular level structure in model lipid membranes.

As teachers and students navigated the forced transition to online education, their physical and social interaction became possible only through technology. How did this mediated interaction affect learning outcomes, teacher presence, and their performance, in synchronous classroom spaces? What was lost in the translation of in-person instruction? What might this lost element tell us about the epistemology of embodiment, the transfer of knowledge in the classroom, and the roles of teachers and students within these knowledge frameworks? Through autoethnographical performative inquiry, this paper argues that embodiment—individual and collective—and multidimensional proximity construct sites of knowledge transfer.

Résumé :
For restorations on teeth involving invasion of the supracrestal tissue attachment (biological width), as well as for lack of ferrule effect, crown lengthening is required for long-term periodontal health and success of the restoration. In the same fashion, site development is often necessary prior to implant placement in order to provide optimal peri-implant soft and hard tissue architecture conducive to future esthetics and function. Orthodontic extrusion, also known as forced eruption, has been developed and employed clinically to serve the purposes of increasing the clinical crown length, correcting the periodontal defect, and developing the implant site. In order to provide comprehensive guidance on the clinical usage of this technique and maximize the outcome for patients who receive the dental restoration, the currently available literatures were summarized and discussed in the current review. Compared to traditional crown lengthening surgery, forced eruption holds advantages of preserving supporting bone, providing improved esthetics, limiting the involvement of adjacent teeth, and decreasing the negative impact on crown-to-root ratio compared to the traditional resective approach. As a non-invasive and natural technique capable of increasing the available volume of bone and soft tissue, forced eruption is also an attractive and promising option for implant site development. Both fixed and removable appliances can be used to achieve the desired extrusion, but patient compliance is a primary limiting factor for the utilization of removable appliances. In summary, forced eruption is a valuable treatment adjunct for patients requiring crown lengthening or implant restorations. Nonetheless, comprehensive evaluation and treatment planning are required for appropriate case selection based upon the known indications and contraindications for each purpose; major contraindications include inflammation, ankylosis, hypercementosis, vertical root fracture, and root proximity. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the long-term stability of orthodontically extruded teeth and the supporting bone and soft tissue that followed them.

Résumé :
Abstract A high-resolution simulation of the 8 May 2003 Oklahoma tornadic supercell is analyzed to determine the origin of internal outflow surges within the low-level cold pool. The analyzed simulation has 50-m horizontal grid spacing and is quadruply nested within larger, lower-resolution domains that were initialized via three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) of radar and other observations. The high-resolution simulation produces two tornadoes that track in close proximity to the observed tornado on 8 May 2003. The authors’ previous study determined that an internal outflow surge instigated tornadogenesis for the first tornado in this simulation but the cause of this internal outflow surge was unclear. In this study, the vertical momentum equation is analyzed along backward trajectories that are initialized within the tornado-triggering internal outflow surge. The analysis reveals that the internal outflow surge is forced by the dynamic part of the vertical pressure gradient. Further examination reveals that the dynamic forcing is the result of a high pressure perturbation in an area of stagnating flow on the west and northwest sides of the low-level (below ~3 km AGL) mesocyclone. This region of high perturbation pressure is unsteady and forces several other warm internal outflow surges on the west side of the tornado. Cold internal outflow surges also occur later in the simulation and are shown to be buoyantly forced by evaporation and water loading in heavy precipitation.

Abstract. How far away from each other people sit or stand reveals much about their social proximity, but merely sitting or standing may not test the limits of social boundaries as much as collaborating on tasks requiring physical coordination. In this study, we asked university students to walk two abreast while carrying a long pipe from one end of a workspace to another. Hurdles in the workspace forced the dyads to decide whether to walk close together without stepping over the hurdles or walk farther apart, stepping over the hurdles. The subjects often chose the latter option, stepping over 18-inch high hurdles rather than walking on level ground.

Résumé :
The effect of boiling on the rate of heat extraction by cooling channels employed in pressure die casting dies is investigated. The cooling effect of the channels is simulated using a model that accounts for subcooled nucleate boiling and transitional film boiling as well as forced convection. The boiling model provides a continuous relationship between the rate of heat transfer and temperature, and can be applied to surfaces where forced convection, subcooled nucleate boiling and transitional film boiling are taking place in close proximity. The effects of physical parameters such as flow velocity, degree of subcooling, system pressure and bulk temperature are taken into account. Experimental results are obtained using a rig that simulates the pressure die casting process. The results are compared with the model predictions and are found to show good agreement. Instrumented field tests, on an industrial die casting machine, are also reported. These tests show the beneficial effects of boiling heat transfer in the pressure die casting process, including a 75 per cent increase in the production rate for the test component.

Résumé :
Abstract The time-varying response of Earth’s and other planets’ rotation to external gravitational torques depends strongly on their internal structure. In particular, the existence of the mode known as the free core nutation in the fluid core is known to amplify the forced nutations in the near-diurnal retrograde frequency band (as measured in the planetary frame of reference). Due to their proximity in shape and frequency, this mode is sometimes equated with the so-called spin-over mode, which denotes the free oscillation of a steadily rotating ellipsoidal fluid core. Through a careful study of the freely rotating two-layer planetary model with a rigid mantle and an inviscid fluid core, we show that the spin-over mode frequency corresponds to that where the sum of the external and internal torques on the mantle is balanced, causing it to rotate steadily. The presence of dissipation at the core−mantle boundary causes the free core nutation to become damped and slightly offsets its resonance frequency. We show that this offset, which is ≈−1 day for Earth, can be interpreted as the result of the proximity of the free core nutation frequency to that of the spin-over mode, which now corresponds to a minimum in the magnitude of the transfer function for nutations. We also show how this proximity leads to a slightly lower quality factor for the resonance than that computed from the usual formula. We conclude by discussing possible implications of this mechanism for Mars, the Moon, and the long-term evolution of Earth.

Schools serve an essential function for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and complex needs. However, school-based instruction may be interrupted due to pandemics, natural disasters, and school shootings, and as a result, schools are forced to stop traditional services and begin teaching students in their homes. Fortunately, distance education strategies are available to mitigate brick and mortar interruptions. When rural schools close, they face unique challenges, such as proximity to students, and technology limitations. In this article, we describe strategies for teachers to develop instructional materials, communication supports, and behavioral supports. We also describe how caregivers might provide support, and how to teach caregivers the skills necessary for effective support implementation.

Résumé :
Trend of GM crops has drastically amplified since couple of years. Global production status has shown that over 52 million ha in urban areas is comprised of GM crops. Apart from economic importance and future demands, there is a huge concern regarding nutritional content of genetically engineered plants. Amongst all, Bt rice is well-known as a domestic cereal and its increased demand has forced to enhance the rice production. Pest attack has reduced rice production that is why Bacillus thuringiensis variety of rice has been introduced. The current research has been conducted to equate dietetic measures of Non Bt basmati with Bt variety that both are cultivated in Pakistan’s agricultural land. Proposed protocol for proximate analysis was AOAC method where statistically analyzed studied parameters (fat, fiber, ash, protein, moisture) illustrated HO is less than P value that proposed minor alterations in proximate configuration of both rice varieties such as (fat 2.90%, fiber 2.20%, ash 3.10%, protein 9.20%, moisture 10.80%) in Bt Rice While (fat 2.65%, fiber 2.40%, ash 2.80%, protein 9.30%, moisture 11%) in Non Bt Rice. Visible difference was found in result of elemental analysis of two varieties. Elemental content such as Ca 0.013, Mg 023, were less in Bt rice in contrast to Basmati (non Bt) rice. During the present study it was concluded that foreign gene insertion cannot affect proximity of variety but it can change elemental content of rice variety.

Résumé :
Abstract We investigate environmental factors of severe convective weather using temperature and moisture retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) that lie along parcel trajectories traced from tornado, large hail, and severe wind producing events in the central United States. We create AIRS proximity soundings representative of the storm environment by calculating back trajectories from storm times and locations at levels throughout the troposphere, using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model forced with the 32-km North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) and 12-km North American Mesoscale Forecast System (NAM12). The proximity soundings are calculated for severe weather events including tornadoes, hail ≥2 in. diameter, and wind gusts >65 mph (29 m s−1) specified in the NCEI Storm Events database. Box-and-whisker diagrams exhibit more realistic values of enhanced convective available potential energy (CAPE) and suppressed convective inhibition (CIN) relative to conventional “nearest neighbor” (NN) soundings; however, differences in lifting condensation level (LCL), level of free convection (LFC), and significant tornado parameter (STP) from the HYSPLIT-adjusted back traced soundings are more similar to NN soundings. This methodology should be extended to larger swaths of soundings, and to other operational infrared sounders, to characterize the large-scale environment in severe convective events.

Résumé :
In the work on the basis of Darcy equations defining lubricant flow in porous layers, and of Reynolds modified equation the problem of an unsteady motion of viscous incompressible lubricant in the gap of a por-ous damper is under solution. A case is under consideration when a forced lubricant supply is carried out in circumferential and radial directions taking into account the influence of orthogonal anisotropy of a porous layer. As a result of the solution of the problem specified there is found a field of pressures in a porous and lubricating layer, and analytical dependences for efforts in an oil film are obtained. Besides, there is defined a module of an unbalance transmitted effort and also stationary and transient ratios of transfer. It is proved that at the forced lubricant feed in a circumferential or radial direction taking into account the influence of orthogonal anisotropy of a porous layer, a damper functions more steadily. The obtained specified calculated models al-lowed defining a number of supplementary factors and also carrying out a comparative analysis of results newly obtained and already existing ones. It confirmed a larger proximity of a new model an actual practice.

Developing countries and low-income countries with rapidly growing populations and underdeveloped agricultural technologies are most vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. The countries of Central Asia are already exposed to the impact of natural and climatic changes due to insufficient financial and technical capabilities to overcome negative climatic and environmental phenomena. The authors predict an increase in the ecological migration of the population from Central Asia to Russia due to the visa-free regime, territorial proximity, established migrant social networks and other factors, which partially will compensate for the Russian population decline. Without a legal channel for environmental migration, these flows will be forced to use the labor migration channel. However, there are a number of potential negative consequences that need to be further scrutinized.

Résumé :
Climate change is strongly influencing regions of Antarctica but the consequences on microevolutionary processes have been little studied. Patterns of population genetic diversity were analysed in the Antarctic bivalve Nuculana inaequisculpta (Protobranchia: Nuculanidae) from a fjord with 70 years of documented climate-forced glacier retreat. Thirty-nine individuals from five sites at different distances from the glacier terminus were collected, and the COI gene was sequenced from each individual. No statistically significant genetic differentiation was found between sites nor a significant correlation between the proximity of glaciers and genetic diversity, suggesting a high dispersal capability and therefore, a planktonic larval stage for this species. Nevertheless, we encourage increasing the sample size and number of loci in future studies to confirm our findings.

Résumé :
Abstract The Great Plains low-level jet (LLJ) fosters an environment that supports nocturnal mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) across the central United States during the summer months. The current study examines if LLJ forecast accuracy correlates with MCS precipitation forecast skill in 4-km WRF runs. LLJs were classified based on their synoptic background as either strongly forced, cyclonic flow (type C) or weakly forced, anticyclonic flow inertial oscillation driven (type A). Large-scale variables associated with the LLJ were examined. For all LLJs inclusive and the subset of type C LLJs alone, the forecast accuracy of the LLJ total wind direction significantly correlated with MCS precipitation forecast skill. For type C LLJ cases, where predictive skill for MCSs was higher overall, the LLJ ageostrophic wind direction forecast accuracy significantly correlated with MCS precipitation forecast skill during the LLJ and MCS developmental stages, with potential temperature and moisture forecast accuracy correlating well with the forecast skill of mature MCSs. Statistically significant correlations were mainly absent between MCS precipitation forecast skill and LLJ forecast accuracy for type A cases. It is thus suggested that either non-LLJ factors like most unstable convective available potential energy (MUCAPE) or most unstable convective inhibition (MUCIN) fields within close proximity of MCSs, or factors on smaller scales than analyzed (such as gravity waves or bores), may have the greatest potential influence on MCS precipitation forecast skill in LLJ-induced MCS cases in an ambient weakly forced synoptic regime.

Résumé :
AbstractThis paper argues that childbirth served as a prism for religious experience in early America, not just among the women who experienced it but also among the members of their households and communities. Examining childbirth as the source of religious experience can shed light on the social and physiological dimensions of early American spirituality by illuminating a religious culture of childbearing that shaped the piety of anyone who came into contact with it. We might expect that childbirth molded women's spirituality. But this article proposes that not just women but also others in their midst experienced religion differently because of their proximity to childbirth. Pregnancy, labor, and infant loss forced women and men to confront mortality and became means through which they carved out spiritual life, created ritual, and forged religious community. Using the body as a category of analysis, this paper reveals a space where the physical and spiritual persons intersect, and it argues that spiritual responses to childbirth as a physiological event were part of the longer arc of religious experience than we have previously appreciated. In doing so, it offers new ways to center women and gender in the narrative of early American religious history.

This study looks into the assimilation and hybridization of Natives in Euro-American culture in Sherman Alexie’s Flight (2007). The study reveals that the hybridization of Native Americans is the ultimate consequence of innate resistance against abuse and marginalization in the post-contact world. The study endorses survival/endurance proximity, as suggested by Gerald Vizenor. The selected work, a magical realist text, narrates the quest of a Native American teenage boy Zits who, in search of his true identity, ultimately has reached his self-illumination. The study positions hybridity as an antidote to the essentialist position of purity and ethnicity. Zits' Native self is a victim of forced kidnapping and forged an identity in a post-contact multi-cultural society, hence 'mutual and mutable.'Employing Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as a lens, the study magnifies the survivance of the protagonist in the contemporary world and analyzes the text through Greg Sarris' "integrative approach ."The study illustrates that Alexie's text paves the way to a bridging position that helps the native-self rise from trauma and crisis of lacking intrinsicality in the contemporary western world.

Résumé :
AbstractA prior second-moment closure (SMC) model of Langmuir turbulence in the upper ocean is modified by introduction of inhomogeneous pressure–strain rate and pressure–scalar gradient closures that are similar to the high Reynolds number, near-wall treatments for solid wall boundaries. This repairs several near-surface defects in the algebraic Reynolds stress model (ARSM) of the prior SMC by redirecting Craik–Leibovich (CL) vortex force production of turbulent kinetic energy out of the surface-normal vertical component and into a horizontal one, with an associated reduction in near-surface CL production of vertical momentum flux. A surface-proximity function introduces a new closure parameter that is tuned to previous results from large-eddy simulations (LES), and a numerical SMC model based on stability functions from the new ARSM produces improved comparisons with mean profiles of momentum and TKE components from steady-state LES results forced by aligned wind and waves. An examination of higher-order quasi-homogeneous closures and a numerical simulation of Langmuir turbulence away from the boundaries both show the near-surface inhomogeneous closure to be both necessary for consistency and preferable for simplicity.

Résumé :
Abstract The principle of mutual trust between Member States is key to the functioning of European Union (EU) law. Rooted in sincere cooperation and equality of the Union’s States, that principle is premised on compliance with shared values, interests, and rules. This fosters close cooperation in many areas, such as law enforcement, as exemplified by the European Arrest Warrant Framework Decision (EAW FD). Outside the Union, the presumption is that the principle of mutual trust does not apply. This seems confirmed by the case law on the extradition of EU citizens, with the EU Court of Justice (ECJ) prioritizing intra-EU cooperation over forced transfer of Union nationals to the requesting third countries. As the EU has developed a sophisticated network of relationships with its partners, and neighbours especially, the question arises as to when, if at all, third countries can be trusted, and when that trust can be challenged. By using the benchmark of EU membership as the standard of legal proximity, this article analyses the EU’s relationship with some of its neighbours in cases of extradition. The article creates an analytical framework to tackle unanswered questions around mutual trust and cooperation in criminal matters, and to read into the future of the legal relationship between the EU and some third countries.

Résumé :
A relevant problem in the development and improvement of numeric analytical methods for the research of structures, buildings and construction is studying the stress–strain state of structures and construction with boundaries that have complex shapes. Deformations and stresses arise in a domain with a geometrically non-linear shape of the boundary (cut-outs and cuts). These stresses and deformations have great values and gradients. Experiments carried out using the photoelasticity method show a change in the deformation order ratios for different subareas of the boundary cut-out area depending on proximity to the apex of the angular cut-out. Areas with minor deformations are observed, and areas where linear deformations and shears are more significant than rotations are also observed. In addition, areas where section rotations are more significant than linear and shear deformations are observed. According to the experimental data, the mathematical model of the SSS in the area of the apex of the cut-out of the domain boundary should take into account non-linear deformations. Hence, it is necessary to formulate the boundary value problem of the theory of elasticity, taking into account the geometrical non-linearity. The research aim of this paper is to formulate the problem of the elasticity theory taking into account the geometrical non-linearity in furtherance of the proposed mathematical model justified by the experimental data obtained using the photoelasticity method. The obtained formulation of the elasticity theory problem allows analyzing the form of the system of equations of the boundary value problem depending on the proximity of the considered area to the irregular point of the boundary, i.e., taking into account the difference in the effect of linear and shear deformations, rotations and forced deformations on the solution to the geometrically non-linear elastic problem dealing with forced deformations in the area of an angular cut-out of the boundary of the plane domain.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced governments to implement strategies for contact tracing due to the disease’s ease of spread. The Malaysian government has sought to develop and implement a digital contact-tracking application to make it easier and faster to detect the spread; the system has become an integral part of the exit strategy from mandated lockdowns. These applications keep track of the user’s proximity with others who are in the system to inform them early on if they are at a risk of infection. The effectiveness of these applications depends on the willingness of users to install and allow the application to track their location at all times. Therefore, this research aims to identify the factors that would stimulate or slow down the adoption of contact-tracing apps.

According to the World Bank Group, 36 of the 50 most polluted cities in the European Union are in Poland. Thus, ambient air pollution and its detrimental health effects are a matter of immense importance in Poland. This narrative review aims to analyse current findings on air pollution and health in Poland, with a focus on respiratory diseases, including COVID-19, as well as the Poles’ awareness of air pollution. PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were searched. In total, results from 71 research papers were summarized qualitatively. In Poland, increased air pollution levels are linked to increased general and respiratory disease mortality rates, higher prevalence of respiratory diseases, including asthma, lung cancer and COVID-19 infections, reduced forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). The proximity of high traffic areas exacerbates respiratory health problems. People living in more polluted regions (south of Poland) and in the winter season have a higher level of air pollution awareness. There is an urgent need to reduce air pollution levels and increase public awareness of this threat. A larger number of multi-city studies are needed in Poland to consistently track the burden of diseases attributable to air pollution.

Among the complex of issues dealt with by the theory of food security, the problems of the impact on food inflation, which especially grew in the Visegráld countries and Albania in the 2nd-3rd quarter of 2022, are being studied. The focus of the paper is on researching the possibilities of increasing the product supply due to imports. The countries selected for the study demonstrated a common strategy to use the problems with the export sales of grain experienced by Russia and Ukraine in 2022 in the interests of developing their own infrastructure and increasing the security of national grain markets, as well as to strengthen the ruling political forces. However, due to multiple differences between the countries (the level of self-sufficiency in grain crops, the degree of geographical proximity to Ukraine, the availability of financial resources, etc.), they chose different tactical models: the Visegrad countries and Romania, despite the rhetoric of solidarity with countries with a high level of food insecurity, are aimed at obtaining additional financial dividends from their role as transit countries for Ukrainian grain; Albania, due to its geographical remoteness from Ukraine, the closure of Ukrainian ports before the start of a grain deal and small financial reserves, is forced to focus on other available sources of grain.

Résumé :
Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022 began with the bombing of populated areas on the territory of Ukraine and caused massive destruction of civilian (residential) infrastructure. Accordingly, the Russian war against Ukraine led to large-scale migration of the population both to the safer western regions of the country and beyond. Quantitative indicators of forced population migration are disclosed in the article with the help of statistical, analysis and synthesis, comparative and geographical. According to UN data, 11.4 million Ukrainians left their homes in the first months of the full-scale invasion. Today, 4.9 million people live abroad, 7.1 million people have the status of internally displaced persons. But at the same time, 2.3 million people have already returned to Ukraine. The geographical aspects of external forced migration are defined. The largest share of forced migrants from Ukraine was registered in Poland and Germany. The sex-age structure of forced migrants abroad is also determined. Based on the descriptive method, the reasons that prompted Ukrainians to choose the appropriate country are highlighted, namely: preference for a country where migrants have acquaintances or relatives; proximity to the border, i.e. migration to neighboring countries; employment opportunities and social benefits. Quantitative characteristics and geography of resettlement within the country of internally displaced persons are analyzed. Separated groups of the population that are least likely to return to Ukraine. Namely, these are mobile layers of the population; persons who planned to go abroad before February 24; seasonal workers abroad; the population that was under occupation lost their homes or loved ones. Issues of facilitating the return of Ukrainian migrants abroad to their homes are highlighted. That is why it is important to develop a policy aimed at creating favorable conditions for the return of Ukrainians and not to lose contact with them. After a full-scale war ends and the security situation stabilizes, there will be a need to create opportunities for return, primarily in terms of housing and employment.

Résumé :
A novel method is presented for obtaining rigorous upper bounds on the finite-amplitude growth of instabilities to parallel shear flows on the beta-plane. The method relies on the existence of finite-amplitude Liapunov (normed) stability theorems, due to Arnol'd, which are nonlinear generalizations of the classical stability theorems of Rayleigh and Fjørtoft. Briefly, the idea is to use the finite-amplitude stability theorems to constrain the evolution of unstable flows in terms of their proximity to a stable flow. Two classes of general bounds are derived, and various examples are considered. It is also shown that, for a certain kind of forced-dissipative problem with dissipation proportional to vorticity, the finite-amplitude stability theorems (which were originally derived for inviscid, unforced flow) remain valid (though they are no longer strictly Liapunov); the saturation bounds therefore continue to hold under these conditions.

Background: The Golgi apparatus undergoes disorganization in response to stress, but it is able to restore compact and perinuclear structure under recovery. This self-organization mechanism is significant for cellular homeostasis, but remains mostly elusive, as does the role of giantin, the largest Golgi matrix dimeric protein. Methods: In HeLa and different prostate cancer cells, we used the model of cellular stress induced by Brefeldin A (BFA). The conformational structure of giantin was assessed by proximity ligation assay and atomic force microscopy. The post-BFA distribution of Golgi resident enzymes was examined by 3D SIM high-resolution microscopy. Results: We detected that giantin is rather flexible than an extended coiled-coil dimer and BFA-induced Golgi disassembly was associated with giantin monomerization. A fusion of the nascent Golgi membranes after BFA washout is forced by giantin re-dimerization via disulfide bond in its luminal domain and assisted by Rab6a GTPase. GM130-GRASP65-dependent enzymes are able to reach the nascent Golgi membranes, while giantin-sensitive enzymes appeared at the Golgi after its complete recovery via direct interaction of their cytoplasmic tail with N-terminus of giantin. Conclusion: Post-stress recovery of Golgi is conducted by giantin dimer and Golgi proteins refill membranes according to their docking affiliation rather than their intra-Golgi location.

Résumé :
Abstract The sensitivity of storm longevity to the pattern of deep convection initiation (e.g., multiple, quasi-linearly arranged initial deep convective cells versus an isolated deep convective cell) is examined using idealized cloud-resolving simulations conducted with a low-shear initial environment. When multiple deep convective cells are initialized in close proximity to one another using either a line of thermals or a shallow airmass boundary, long-lived storms are produced. However, when isolated deep convection is initiated, the resultant storm steadily decays following initiation. These results illustrate that a quasi-linear mechanism, such as a preexisting airmass boundary, that initiates multiple deep convective cells in close proximity can lead to longer-lived storms than a mechanism that initiates isolated deep convection. The essential difference between the experiments conducted is that an isolated initial storm produces a shallower cold pool than when a quasi-linear initiation is used. It is argued that the deep cold pools promote deep forced ascent, systematic convective cell redevelopment, and thus long-lived storms, even in environments with small values of vertical shear. The difference in cold pool depth between the simulations is attributed to differences in the horizontal flux of cold air to the gust front. With a single initial storm, the few convective cells that subsequently form provide only a limited source of cold air, leading to a cold pool that is shallow and incapable of fostering continued updraft redevelopment.

Résumé :
Abstract Research illustrates that neighborhood outcomes (including the built environment) influence the mental and physical health of vulnerable older adults (OA). Many OA aim to age-in-place but aging-in-place is less realistic for low-income OA because of gentrification and forced relocation. Examining neighborhood context is vital to understanding how the places we live contribute to well-being, yet, there is insufficient research on the biopsychosocial effects of forced relocation on low-income OA. To address this gap, our study uses aging-in-place theory to understand the association of neighborhood and health outcomes of relocated and nonrelocated low-income OA in public housing. This study includes three waves of data from Georgia State University’s Urban Health Initiative Study. Participants (n=225) were categorized by age (young-old = 50-64; old-old = 65-74; and oldest-old = 75+). We conducted multivariate regression analyses to highlight relationships between neighborhood and health outcomes, and relocation. We used geocoding to provide within-group analysis of relocated residents to determine if geographic proximity to former public housing communities affected neighborhood and health outcomes. Results show that relocated OA have worse informal social control and neighborhood satisfaction outcomes, but better built environment conditions than those who aged-in-place. Mental health and physical functioning worsened for relocated OA. Relocation was associated with reduced social cohesion and worse built environment conditions for the oldest-old. Moderation analysis illustrated that OA who relocated farther away had worse neighborhood outcomes. Considering the importance of aging-in-place to OA well-being, policymakers may reconsider forced relocation and allocating funds to enhance neighborhoods.

Résumé :
Synchronization is a universal concept in nonlinear science but has received little attention in thermoacoustics. In this numerical study, we take a dynamical systems approach to investigating the influence of harmonic acoustic forcing on three different types of self-excited thermoacoustic oscillations: periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic. When the periodic system is forced, we find that: (i) at low forcing amplitudes, it responds at both the forcing frequency and the natural (self-excited) frequency, as well as at their linear combinations, indicating quasi-periodicity; (ii) above a critical forcing amplitude, the system locks in to the forcing; (iii) the bifurcations leading up to lock-in and the critical forcing amplitude required for lock-in depend on the proximity of the forcing frequency to the natural frequency; (iv) the response amplitude at lock-in may be larger or smaller than that of the unforced system and the system can exhibit hysteresis and the jump phenomenon owing to a cusp catastrophe; and (v) at forcing amplitudes above lock-in, the oscillations can become unstable and transition to chaos, or switch between different stable attractors depending on the forcing amplitude. When the quasi-periodic system is forced at a frequency equal to one of the two characteristic frequencies of the torus attractor, we find that lock-in occurs via a saddle-node bifurcation with frequency pulling. When the chaotic system is forced at a frequency close to the dominant frequency of its strange attractor, we find that it is possible to destroy chaos and establish stable periodic oscillations. These results show that the open-loop application of harmonic acoustic forcing can be an effective strategy for controlling periodic or aperiodic thermoacoustic oscillations. In some cases, we find that such forcing can reduce the response amplitude by up to 90 %, making it a viable way to weaken thermoacoustic oscillations.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the analysis of archival materials and other narrative sources, on the basis of which the places of outflow during the settlement of service military people from the middle of the XVII-th century at Oboyansky and Sudzhansky counties are established. The authors consider the entire process mentioned above for each migration category separately. Researchers determine the percentage of the forced settlementers who didn't come and the importance of their institute of guarantee, among the unauthorized migrants – their social composition and the presence of fellow countrymen among them, and among the local population – the role of their influence on the entire settlement process. As a result, the authors found that both of these counties were populated mainly by the surrounding trajectory and had many boyar children who wanted to have estates in the rear. Even in these counties, the northern trajectory of settlement ceases to dominate, from which, in both of them, its western direction prevailed over the eastern one. By the way, the latest presence was a characteristic feature of the Oboyan county, due to the forced settlement of the Karpov city. The peculiarity of the Sudzhansky county was in the initial presence of the local population, as well as in close proximity to the ukrainians from the Sumy Sloboda Regiment. The authors note that, basically, common features in the settlement of Sudzhansky and Oboyansky counties determined their proximity, as well as their location on the same river system. Moreover, the settlement of one county smoothly flowed into another. After all, the active colonization of the tributaries of the Psel river by service military people took place alternately from east to west during the strengthening of the rear of the Belgorod line. By the way, it was moving towards the Ukrainian colonization, which proceeded along the reverse trajectory from west to east. They met on the territory of the Sudzhansky county. In addition to this conclusion, the authors established that geography of settlement in the study area was an avalanche-like, due to the fact that over time, the exit points of the northern trajectory shifted south.

Résumé :
This article examines possible strategies for preserving the national identity of Ukrainians living outside of Ukraine, specifically in the Republic of Turkey for many years, as well as those who were forced to leave Ukrainian territory due to Russia's open military aggression against Ukraine in 2022. The research material is based on the achievements of the Ukrainian community in the Turkish city of Bursa, which is one of the largest cities in the Republic of Turkey. The close proximity of Bursa to Istanbul, and therefore to Turkey's major transportation hub, led Ukrainians to choose this city for temporary residence outside of Ukraine as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Despite the fact that the Turkish government does not extensively cover the events currently taking place in Ukraine in the majority of media outlets, has not imposed sanctions against Russia and the increasing number of Russians in Turkey, the Ukrainian community is making significant efforts to preserve, promote, and manifest the Ukrainian language, culture, and unity. The study focuses on the means and methods that have contributed to the exploration of these paths. It analyzes the achievements of Ukrainians in the fields of education, politics, religion, and culture. The article also highlights certain volunteer initiatives, including online volunteering, by Ukrainians, particularly those who were forced to leave Ukraine due to the full-scale war, in the city of Bursa.
