Résumé :
Numerical simulations of forced convective incompressible flow in a horizontal plane channel with adiabatic walls over two isothermal tandem triangular cylinders of equal size are presented to investigate the effect of wall proximity of obstacles, gap space (i.e. gap between two squares), and Reynolds number. Computations have been carried out for Reynolds numbers of (based on triangle width) 100, 250, and 350. Results show that, wall proximity has different effect on first and second triangle in fluid characteristics especially in lower gap spaced, while for heat transfer a fairly same behavior was seen.

Résumé :
Millions of Rohingya were forced to flee their home and became effectively stateless due to countless violations and vulnerabilities in Myanmar. Their future has become jeopardized with a profusion of uncertainties; however, like other displaced people, Rohingya also got media attention when disaster and conflicts forced them to flee. This study aims to explore and classify the determinant factors that push the Myanmar government to force the Rohingya to flee. It also explores the indicators that moulded the South and Southeast Asian geopolitics. The research intends to categorize the conditions that triggered the Rohingya crisis, while the regional geopolitics capture Rohingya as a proxy to intensify the regional proximity. The study found that Rohingya seek opportunities for rights while financial and institutional inability bewildering to respond to their needs and increase the proximity of evasive commitments for the next move by the national and regional government. It is also evident that the plight of these people is precarious and vulnerable, where the provision of legal protection is rare. The great powers of this area intentionally avoid the issue and indirectly influence the countries to increase the regional security tension by supporting armament. This issue dramatically influences the domestic and regional politics of South and Southeast Asian countries and redefines their mutual relationships with the great powers. The study provides a glimpse of the polarization and politicization of the Rohingya minority in the regional security and geopolitical context.

Résumé :
A framework to study the influence of polydispersity on flow-induced diffusion in active microrheology is presented. It is found that diffusive behavior is set entirely and dually by the proximity with which two particles can approach one another, and by the extent to which this minimum approach distance is occupied by the hydrodynamic size of the forced particle.

Résumé :
Social distancing has been the central public health strategy for tackling the coronavirus pandemic worldwide. But the ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ order in the United Kingdom and the consequent closure of nurseries and schools also created an unprecedented degree of proximity within households. Based on interviews with mothers of young children in Scotland, this article provides early insight into the ways that mothers manage the forced intimacies of family life under lockdown and the opportunities they create through the innovative management of space and time. The result is a more expansive understanding of the family in contemporary Scotland and a notion of intimacy characterised as much by the necessity of distance and distinction as by proximity and mutuality.

Résumé :
Zn-air batteries have attracted considerable attention from researchers owing to their high theoretical energy density and the abundance of zinc on Earth. The modification of battery component materials represent a common approach to improve battery performance. The effects of cell design on cell performance are seldom investigated. In this study, we designed four battery structures as follows. Cell 1: close-proximity electrode, Cell 2: equal-area electrode, Cell 3: large zinc electrode, and Cell 4: air channel flow. The effects of four factors: (1) carbon paste, (2) natural and forced air convection, (3) anode/cathode area ratio, and (4) anode–cathode distance were also investigated. Results showed that the addition of carbon paste on the air side of 25BC increased cell power density under forced air convection. Moreover, cell performance also improved by increasing the anode/cathode ratio and by decreasing the anode–cathode distance. These four types of cells were compared based on the oxygen reduction reaction electrode area. Cell 3 displayed the highest power density. In terms of volumetric power density, the proximity cell (Cell 1) exhibited the highest power density among the cells. Therefore, this cell configuration may be suitable for portable applications.

Résumé :
The North Atlantic storminess of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) fully coupled climate simulations is generally less intense than that of their preindustrial (PI) counterparts, despite having stronger baroclinicity. An explanation for this counterintuitive result is presented by comparing two simulations of the IPSL full climate model forced by Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase 3 (PMIP3) LGM and PI conditions. Two additional numerical experiments using a simplified dry general circulation model forced by idealized topography and a relaxation in temperature provide guidance for the dynamical interpretation. The forced experiment with idealized Rockies and an idealized Laurentide Ice Sheet has a less intense North Atlantic storm-track activity than the forced experiment with idealized Rockies only, despite similar baroclinicity. Both the climate and idealized runs satisfy or support the following statements. The reduced storm-track intensity can be explained by a reduced baroclinic conversion, which itself comes from a loss in eddy efficiency to tap the available potential energy as shown by energetic budgets. The eddy heat fluxes are northeastward oriented in the western Atlantic in LGM and are less well aligned with the mean temperature gradient than in PI. The southern slope of the Laurentide Ice Sheet topography forces the eddy geopotential isolines to be zonally oriented at low levels in its proximity. This distorts the tubes of constant eddy geopotential in such a way that they tilt northwestward with height during baroclinic growth in LGM while they are more optimally westward tilted in PI.

Résumé :
In this essay, I use the term “intimacy” to refer to a sentiment of emotional proximity between two or more people. For queer theorist Lauren Berlant, intimacy principally “involves an aspiration for a narrative about something shared, a story about both oneself and others that will turn out a particular way” (281). At its core, an intimate practice is one that allows individuals to share themselves, to know each other more closely, and to work towards a narrative together. In the French society of the 1990s, the dominant heteronormative narrative deemed marriage and sex the most intimate acts largely for their procreative potential, as they produced the ideal emotional proximity and contained this proximity to the perfect nuclear family. In turn, as Berlant notes, queers are forced to find alternative methods of being intimate, whether it be their own non-procreative sex or emotionally invested practices that disavow sex completely. Although sex is heavily present within the work explored in this essay, it becomes clear that queer intimacy does not simply turn straight sex on its head by virtue of having gay participants, but rather that queer intimacy can hold a more subversive role by hinging on sexual objectification and producing emotional proximity on a larger, communal level.

In this thesis, we address the issue of fully localizing a known object through computer vision, using a monocular camera, what is a central problem in robotics. A particular attention is here paid on space robotics applications, with the aims of providing a unified visual localization system for autonomous navigation purposes for space rendezvous and proximity operations. Two main challenges of the problem are tackled: initially detecting the targeted object and then tracking it frame-by-frame, providing the complete pose between the camera and the object, knowing the 3D CAD model of the object. For detection, the pose estimation process is based on the segmentation of the moving object and on an efficient probabilistic edge-based matching and alignment procedure of a set of synthetic views of the object with a sequence of initial images. For the tracking phase, pose estimation is handled through a 3D model-based tracking algorithm, for which we propose three different types of visual features, pertinently representing the object with its edges, its silhouette and with a set of interest points. The reliability of the localization process is evaluated by propagating the uncertainty from the errors of the visual features. This uncertainty besides feeds a linear Kalman filter on the camera velocity parameters. Qualitative and quantitative experiments have been performed on various synthetic and real data, with challenging imaging conditions, showing the efficiency and the benefits of the different contributions, and their compliance with space rendezvous applications.

This thesis aims at proposing and discussing several solutions to the problem of low-dimensional point cloudanalysis and clustering. These solutions are based on the analysis of the Delaunay triangulation. Two types of approaches are presented and discussed. The first one follows a classical three steps approach:1) the construction of a proximity graph that embeds topological information, 2) the construction of statisticalinformation out of this graph and 3) the removal of pointless elements regarding this information. The impactof different simplicial complex-based measures, i.e. not only based on a graph, is discussed. Evaluation is madeas regards point cloud clustering quality along with handwritten character recognition rates. The second type ofapproaches consists of one-step approaches that derive clustering along with the construction of the triangulation

The evolution of technology has launched new challenges to communication between people, which has forced organizations to respond in the same way. The new channels and spaces where communication takes place, such as social media and other digital platforms, allow organisations, through public relations, to initiate new interactions with their audiences. The relations between them become interactive and participative and not unidirectional, as happens with the messages conveyed in traditional media. In order to achieve their objectives, the Security Forces need to have a presence in the community for which they resort to proximity policing. This, as a base of action of the Portuguese Security Forces, must adapt to the evolution of the way of communicating, taking advantage of digital platforms, which allow a permanent and effective contact with the followers. Based on this principle, it is entended to understand how digital communication tools can contribute to the promotion of a proximity policy in the Portuguese Security Forces, namely PSP and GNR. To this end, we relied on the theoretical analysis of online public relations integrated into the communication strategy of organisations and the added value of social media for proximity policing. In addition, interviews were conducted with those responsible for the communication departments of each of the institutions and the content of their Instagram and Facebook pages was also analysed to identify differences and similarities between them in the editorial content line, as well as the reactions of the followers. From this analysis, it was possible to conclude on the positive contribution of the use of these tools in proximity with the citizens, namely in the increase of the number of proactive contacts with the Security Forces. These tools also contribute to increasing exposure to prevention and awareness-raising content, as well as to reducing the limitations on citizen contact.

AbstractHigher education in refugee contexts has, in recent years, emerged as a key humanitarian response and development imperative within the international forced migration management space (ECRE 2016). Humanitarian organizations and authorities active in the global forced migration management system have, to varying degrees, instituted and facilitated access to higher education opportunities for many refugees within the confines of refugee camps or the close proximity of host communities (Ferede 2018). Under the broad, sometimes vague, guidance of global development initiatives such as the sustainable development goals (Sawadogo 2016), the raison d’etre of higher education has been positioned as an enabling tool for the economic, social and emotional empowerment of refugees (Brugha and Hollow 2017).

Résumé :
AbstractCollaborative robotic needle insertions have the potential to improve placement accuracy and safety, e.g., during epidural anesthesia. Epidural anesthesia provides effective regional pain management but can lead to serious complications, such as nerve injury or cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Robotic assistance might prevent inadvertent puncture by providing haptic feedback to the physician. Haptic feedback can be realized on the basis of force measurements at the needle. However, contact should be avoided for delicate structures. We propose a proximity-based method to provide feedback prior to contact. We measure the distance to boundary layers, visualize the proximity for the operator and further feedback it as a haptic resistance. We compare our approach to haptic feedback based on needle forces and visual feedback without haptics. Participants are asked to realize needle insertions with each of the three feedback modes. We use phantoms that mimic the structures punctured during epidural anesthesia. We show that visual feedback improves needle placement, but only proximity-based haptic feedback reduces accidental puncture. The puncture rate is 62% for force-based haptic feedback, 60% for visual feedback and 6% for proximity-based haptic feedback. Final needle placement inside the epidural space is achieved in 38%, 70% and 96% for force-based haptic, visual and proximity-based haptic feedback, respectively. Our results suggest that proximity-based haptic feedback could improve needle placement safety in the context of epidural anesthesia.

Résumé :
AbstractGiven its proximity to the Russian border, the city of Trabzon was a strategic port for the Young Turk government against the backdrop of war with Russia. While there is an extensive body of literature about Trabzon during the Armenian Genocide, the experiences of Armenian women and girls who stayed in the city remain unexamined. This chapter draws on the Trabzon trials and survivor testimonies to explore their experiences. While Trabzon Armenians received an official order of deportation, on June 26, 1915, the Vali Cemal Azmi made an “exemption” for Armenian women in later stages of pregnancy and for children “when the parents so desired.” Girls up to 15 years old and boys up to 10 years old remained and were placed in large houses throughout the city. After four years, all male children disappeared, and the girls who survived mostly did so in Turkish households to which they were given as gifts or sold to serve as a wives, servants, or sex slaves. In 1919, the Turkish Courts-Martial brought the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide to trial in Constantinople. Cemal Azmi, Yenibahçeli Nail, who was the Committee on Union and Progress secretary for Trabzon, and five officials who worked with him stood before the court. The charges against them included organizing and implementing the massive annihilation of the Trabzon Armenians, the plunder of their property, the rape and murder of women and children, and the drowning of around 50 pregnant women in the Black sea. There were 20 sessions of the Trabzon trial, held between March 26 and May 20, 1919, during which witnesses and survivors testified. Among them were Misses Siranush Manukian, Philomene Nurian, Sofia Makhokhian, Aruseak Gylchian, Miss Arabian, and other women who witnessed mass drownings, were survivors of rape, forced marriages, and forced prostitution. The trial was extensively covered by both the Armenian and the Turkish press, whose representatives were present at the daily hearings. Close examination of these women's testimonies and other shreds of evidence of this trial shows how gendered the Armenian genocide was and how women were targeted for both their gender and national identity.

Résumé :
AbstractReusing buildings must be ‘convenient’ for the environment and for people, therefore it must re-establish a balance between places and communities which, interacting, determine a continuous transformation of cities. The reuse of buildings is a sustainable development process that implies phases of adaptation and qualitative growth to create safe, healthy, useful, attractive and beautiful places. The objective of the guidelines for the music district of Pescara (research for the conservatory) is to establish activities linked to music, culture and socialization, for the expansion of the ‘Luisa D'Annunzio’ Conservatory (through the reuse of the former Muzii middle school owned by the municipality) and provides the city with inclusive and beautiful places for all. The needs of different users (students of the conservatory and citizens) and those expressed by the client (music teachers and musicians) are considered to ensure the sustainability of the initiative through the integration of activities fit for restoring economic and social ‘gain’, according to an ecological approach. In providing the addresses for the required spaces, it was important to hypothesize additional functions and spaces to reborn the city with inclusion and beauty. The reuse of the former middle school was deemed ‘convenient’ (just as music is effective in restoring social inclusion and cultural development) thanks to the resilience capacities found. The proximity between the former school and the conservatory does not require substantial connection works and the proximity to the urban parks, the sea and the most ‘lively’ area of the urban center demonstrates an aptitude of the place for social reception thanks also to pedestrian and cycle paths. The spaces of the former classrooms are suitable for music teaching and recording studios as other existing spaces are for a music hub and other functions for the conservatory and the city, with a view to sustainable urban development.

Résumé :
Abstract Excitation and added mass functions determined from forced vibration tests of a rigid cylinder undergoing harmonic motion in the flow are used in the semi-empirical software VIVANA to predict the VIV response of pipelines. An advantage of this approach, as opposed to the more-commonly-used response function approach, is that it can account for changing conditions along the length of the pipe, like changing current velocity, seabed proximity, and/or pipe diameter. This makes it useful for pipelines as well as for risers when such changes occur. Further, for pipelines, travelling wave effects play less of a role than for risers, so the VIVANA approach can be simplified by assuming the phase angle of the harmonic response is constant along the span. The interactions between cross-flow and in-line response that complicate the prediction of cross-flow VIV by the excitation function approach, do not arise for pure inline VIV. For the latter case, using the pure in-line forced vibration test data of Aronsen (2007), it is found that both VIVANA approach and simplified ‘SIVANA’ approach thereof predict VIV amplitudes consistent with experiments on flexible pipe (Ormen Lange umbilical VIV tests), and the DNVGL-RP-F105 response function for a range of structural and soil damping values. In a companion paper, this approach is applied partially strake-covered pipeline spans, to show that a relatively small fraction of well-placed strake coverage is enough to suppress in-line VIV.

Résumé :
The safe and efficient offloading of liquid natural gas (LNG) in a side-by-side configuration has emphasised the need to accurately quantify the hydrodynamic responses of floating bodies when located in very close proximity. A new series of computational results are presented for the forced roll of a hull in the presence of a second body representative of a floating FLNG facility. The vortex shedding phenomenon which provides a significant contribution to the damping of an isolated hull, is demonstrated to be modified by the presence of the second body. The total damping coefficients were found to be significantly reduced by approximately 50 percent for the very small gap widths considered. It is shown that in addition to the modification of the local shedding dynamics, the variation in the pressure field owing to the presence of the second body also contributes significantly to the reduction in the damping. The findings will be of particular interest to the offshore industry for improving and optimising offloading practices.

Résumé :
The thermal interaction of an electrical and an optical component located on the same vertical circuit board is studied experimentally. The effects of component proximity and convective flow rate on overall power dissipation from each component are analyzed. The components are represented by isothermal heat sources mounted to a standard 1.59mm (0.0625 in) thick FR4 circuit board. In natural convection situations, when the spacing between components is great enough that the component thermal footprints do not interfere, the power dissipation reaches a maximum “plateau” value that is independent of spacing. If the components are located close enough together that their thermal footprints interfere then the total power dissipation is highly dependent on component spacing (relative location of the electrical source and the geometric positioning of both sources). In forced convection, the total power dissipated increases with both Reynolds number and component spacing. As in natural convection, the relative location of the electrical sources and the positioning of the sources are found to have a strong influence on power dissipation.

Résumé :
The long term motivation for this work has been to find hydrodynamic coefficients needed to predict vortex induced vibrations (VIV) for free spanning pipelines. For such cases one must expect that the proximity of the seafloor will influence hydrodynamic forces, which means that coefficients found from experiments where wall effects have been eliminated are not necessarily valid. The paper presents results from a three dimensional large eddy simulation of flow over a forced oscillating cylinder close to a plane wall. Hydrodynamic forces are computed at a frequency of 0.425 Hz and Reynolds number of 24 000, and the motion amplitude is half diameter of the cylinder. The minimum gap distance between the cylinder and the wall has been varied from 0.2 to 2.5 D, where D is the diameter of the cylinder. The results show that the hydrodynamic forces on the cylinder are significantly influenced by the gap ratio. The excitation force shows a slight increase when the average gap is decreased from 2.5 to 0.5 D, but further reduction changes the trend so that the coefficient becomes negative for a minimum gap of 0.25 D. Hence, the dynamic lift force will change from being an excitation force to a damping force at this distance for the given flow and motion parameters. A sharp drop in drag force is observed at gap ratio less than 0.3 as the cylinder is still out of the boundary layer on the plane wall. The average lift force is also seen to be influenced by the gap. At a large distance from the wall, the average lift is obviously zero, but an average force that will push the cylinder away from the wall is found for gaps smaller than 0.3 D. Results are also reported for the cross-flow added mass as a function of varying gap. In addition to these results, spectra and time histories for the hydrodynamic forces are presented, and also coefficients for higher order force components. Vortex shedding is observed at the minimum gap ratio of 0.2. Some references to experimental work are made, but verification of these results cannot be obtained without new experiments.

Résumé :
This paper presents an experimental study of acoustically forced bluff body stabilized flames, motivated by the problem of combustion instabilities. The goal of the work is to better understand the flame and flow behavior as functions of the proximity of the acoustic frequency to natural hydrodynamic instability frequencies. It is well known that iso-density, high Re bluff body wakes are globally unstable, exhibiting the Von Karman vortex street. In reacting flows, however, this global mode is suppressed if the density ratio across the flame is sufficiently high. Thus, the density ratio is an important parameter that influences the global mode growthrate. In this study, the flame was longitudinally forced over a range of hydrodynamic global mode to forcing frequency ratios, density ratios, and forcing amplitudes. Longitudinal forcing leads to the symmetric rollup of the two separating shear layers. When the forcing frequency is in the vicinity of the wake’s global mode frequency, the global mode locks into the forcing frequency, and the symmetric shear layers quickly stagger as they convect downstream, leading to a large scale, sinuous flapping of the wake and flame. The axial position at which staggering occurs is a function of the forcing amplitude and the proximity of the forcing frequency to the global mode frequency. The lock-in phenomenon amplifies the flame’s motion at the forcing frequency. However, if the vortices stagger to a fully sinuous structure, this causes a significant reduction in the flame’s oscillatory heat release through phase cancellation of the upper and lower flame branches. Therefore, if a low density ratio flame is subjected to longitudinal acoustic forcing near its global mode frequency, it will respond with weaker heat release fluctuations than it would away from lock-in. This is true even though the local degree of flame flapping is quite significant. Thus, the results of this study show some phenomena that contradict conventional notions, namely that forcing a globally unstable flow near its global mode frequencies can lead to diminished local heat release oscillations.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper focusses on predicting the mistuned forced response behavior of an embedded compressor rotor blade row in a 3.5 stage axial compressor. The authors in previous papers studied the multi-row influence on the forcing function for multiple operating conditions. For these investigations CFX was utilized to predict the forcing However, in the mistuned predictions a consistent underprediction of the amplification factor was noted A previous investigation by the authors [32] considered an isolated mode family. The current work considers the same configuration but looks at a non-isolated mode family which is in a frequency “veering” region. Also, since the mistuning code was formulated on the lines of the fundamental mistuning model (FMM) the model only included a single DOF per ND and hence modes in the veering region were not modeled. The current paper addresses both these shortcomings and talks about the influence of sideband travelling wave excitations at the HL operating condition (the details of the mistuned predictions at the PE operating condition can be found in [32]). The paper also talks in detail about the effect of modelling the disc modes individually using the FMM model as well as together using the component mistuning model (CMM) as present in ANSYS Mechanical. Key conclusions are: 1) The mistuned response tends to be amplified by all cases including the sideband excitations, 2) The coupled influence of including a disc mode in the FMM model and sideband excitations is dependent on the proximity of the mode to the blade alone frequency, 3) Although the CMM model predicts the peak of the response accurately, it does not offer any substantial advantage over the FMM model given the computational cost required for the CMM prediction. Also, the prediction is highly sensitive to the frequency of the individual modes that can differ between codes.

Résumé :
Mistuning commonly refers to non-cyclically symmetric variations in such an otherwise cyclically-symmetric structure. Mistuning in a blisk due to variations in blade materials and geometry have been studied extensively and are known to have a significant impact on the forced response of blisks. However, mistuning can also arise due to variations at contact interfaces within a blisk with friction damping mechanisms such as under platform dampers or shrouds. Past literature analyzing the effect of this source of contact mistuning is limited, particularly by the use of lumped or single-node contacts at each sector to shorten analysis times. In this paper, we aim to better understand the specific effects of parameter variations across contact interfaces on an otherwise tuned blisk. A blisk with shroud to shroud contacts is considered. Accurate representation of microslip phenomena are incorporated in the analysis by modeling multiple localized node to node contact models at contact surfaces on each blisk sector. Contact stiffnesses which dictate the friction damping dynamics of the shrouds are chosen as the mistuning parameters. The harmonic balance method is used to solve for forced responses. We analyze cases with random patterns of contact stiffnesses in different microslip regimes in the proximity of different modal regions. Probabilistic analysis of nonlinear contact responses are carried out close to a linear region where comparatively high amplification factors are observed. Statistics are also developed for linear cases and compared with the nonlinear case to qualify the dependence of amplification factors of nonlinear forced responses on the level of microslip and on the variance of contact parameters.

Résumé :
Abstract An engineering model to estimate and incorporate quadratic damping of the piston-mode moonpool responses in the proximity of the piston mode period is proposed. The model provides a physical-based equivalent linearized damping coefficient. The method is not limited to forced motion, but applicable to freely floating moonpool vessels. Further, it is not limited to moonopools, but can be generalized to gap resonance problems, such as side-by-side operations. The soundness of the proposed physical-based method is demonstrated using the panel code WAMIT with a linear damping term in the free-surface boundary condition inside the moonpool using two existing moonpool experiments as case studies; (1) a two-dimensional rectangular box with a moonpool subject to forced heave, and (2) a freely floating offshore vessel in incident waves. The WAMIT computations using the proposed method reconstructs the experimentally obtained piston-mode and vessel responses well. We suggest that the proposed method can be used with fair degree of confidence in an early design or operational analysis phase, in the (often) case that the quadratic damping is not known from either experiments or CFD. To our knowledge, this is the first general, physical-based piston-mode damping model that does not require any tuning from experiments.

Résumé :
The large-amplitude response of perfect and imperfect, simply supported circular cylindrical shells to harmonic excitation in the spectral neighbourhood of some of the lowest natural frequencies is investigated. Donnell’s nonlinear shallow-shell theory is used and the solution is obtained by Galerkin method. Several expansions involving 16 or more natural modes of the shell are used. The boundary conditions on the radial displacement (simply supported shell at both ends) and the continuity of circumferential displacement are exactly satisfied. The effect of internal quiescent, incompressible and inviscid fluid is investigated. The nonlinear equations of motion are studied by using a code based on arclength continuation method. A series of accurate experiments on forced vibrations of an empty and water-filled stainless-steel shell have been performed. Several modes have been intensively investigated for different vibration amplitudes. A closed loop control of the force excitation has been used. The actual geometry of the test shell has been measured and the geometric imperfections have been introduced in the theoretical model. Several interesting nonlinear phenomena have been experimentally observed and numerically reproduced, as: softening-type nonlinearity, different types of travelling wave response in the proximity of resonances and amplitude-modulated response. For all the modes investigated, the theoretical and experimental results are in strong agreement.

Résumé :
Flashback and self-ignition in the premixing zone of typical gas turbine swirl combustors in lean premixed operation are immanent risks and can lead to damage and failure of components. Thus, steady combustion in the premixing zone must be avoided under all circumstances. This study experimentally investigates the flame holding propensity of fuel injectors in the swirler of a gas turbine model combustor with premixing of H2-NG-air-mixtures under atmospheric pressure and proposes a model to predict the limit for safe operation. The A2EV swirler concept exhibits a hollow, thick walled conical structure with four tangential slots. Four fuel injector geometries were tested. One of them injects the fuel orthogonal to the air flow in the slots (jet-in-crossflow-injector, JICI). Three injector types introduce the fuel almost isokinetic to the air flow at the trailing edge of the swirler slots (trailing edge injector, TEI). A cylindrical duct and a window in the swirler made of quartz glass allow the application of optical diagnostics (OH* chemiluminescence and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence of the OH radical (OH-PLIF)) inside the swirler. The fuel-air-mixture was ignited with a focused single laser pulse during steady operation. The position of ignition was located inside the swirler in proximity to a fuel injection hole. If the flame was washed out of the premixing zone not later than four seconds after the ignition the operation point was defined as safe. Operation points were investigated at three air mass flows, three air ratios, two air preheat temperatures (573 K, 673 K) and 40 to 100 percent per volume hydrogen in the fuel composed of hydrogen and natural gas. The determined safety limit for atmospheric pressure yields a similarity rule based on a critical Damköhler number. Application of the proposed rule at conditions typical for gas turbines leads to these safety limits for the A2EV burner: With the TEIs the swirler can safely operate with up to 80 percent per volume hydrogen content in the fuel at an air ratio of two. With the JIC injector safe operation at stoichiometric conditions and 95 percent per volume hydrogen is possible.

Résumé :
Cathodic protection requirements for buried structures have traditionally been predicted by use of anode resistance equations which take into account the influence of anode geometry on the current distribution at the anode and the influence of soil resistivity on the driving force required to pass current to the structure to be protected. The conventional anode resistance formulas used for CP design were developed for bare pipes protected by remote anodes. Under these conditions, the current density at the anode is so much larger than that on the pipe that the current and potential distribution around the pipe can be ignored in resistance calculations. The current and potential distribution on the pipeline must, however, be considered for coated pipes with coating holidays or when anodes are placed in close proximity to the pipe. The objectives of this work were: 1. to develop and apply new experimental techniques for identifying the time-dependent polarization behavior of pipeline grade steel as a function of the ionic composition of typical soil leachate and to develop and apply methods to interpret the results in terms of fundamental physical processes; 2. to measure the time-dependent polarization of FBE-coated coupons with and without machined coating holidays that expose bare steel; and 3. to establish an approach for predicting the polarization behavior of coated coupons with coating holidays that expose bare steel. by comparing the predictions for the polarization of coupons with holidays with experimental values.
