Résumé :
An effective and robust flow path network is desired in Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems. A design process to obtain the desired flow path network in AGV systems is proposed in this paper. Our proposed method can make flow path networks robust against tasks, which include pick-up point, drop-off point and throughput and number of AGVs . It is important for this robust flow path network that the kinds of tasks be of various and non-linear to the system effectiveness. The problem is solved by the design method of various kinds of tasks that are difficult for AGV systems using Genetic Algorithm (GA). An effective flow path network is designed with GA simultaneously because the difficult tasks and number of AGVs depend on the flow path networks. Competitive coevolution is applied to the simultaneous design. AGV systems can be effective with uni/bi-directional combined flow path networks which utilize just simple routings. Results of the design are shown through simulations, and the designed flow path network makes it possible to complete various tasks with various numbers of AGVs.

Résumé :
The modelling method of dynamic flow path feature (DFPF) is proposed for the design process of hydraulic manifold block (HMB). In this method, temporary body model and B-Rep model are adopted to represent geometric model of DFPF; the former is used for showing flow path, checking connectivity and safe wall thickness, and the latter is used for saving the final results. A novel feature topological representation method based on solid adjacency graph (SAG) is provided, and then validity of feature semantics can be checked through SAG. Finally dynamic topological changeability of flow path feature is realized by constraint solution and knowledge driving. Object-oriented model of DFPF is given, and the design process of HMB based on DFPF is illustrated.

Résumé :
The connection design of flow path is the most important task in Hydraulic Manifold Blocks (HMB) design. But the traditional method of feature design can not dynamically change the topology configuration and parameters of flow path when the design changed. This paper use a hybrid model consisting of temporary body model and B-Rep model, and represent flow path pattern using adjacency graph, adjacency matrix, weight matrix and degree array. The design parameters can be optimized by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA2). The topology configuration of flow path can adaptively change according to the design change.

Résumé :
As global environmental problems are worsening, the efficiency of storage systems for renewable energy are gaining importance. The redox flow battery (RFB), a promising energy storage system (ESS), is a device that generates or stores electricity through reduction–oxidation reactions between active materials constituting electrolytes. Herein, we proposed a flow frame design that reduces flow resistance in the flow path and causes uniform flow distribution in the electrode to develop an efficient redox flow battery. Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental verification, we investigated the flow characteristics and flow uniformity inside the conventional redox flow battery cell. An analysis of the flow characteristics of the conventional flow frame revealed a non-uniform distribution of the flow discharged to the electrodes, owing to the complex (branched) flow path geometry of the inlet channel. To address this problem, we proposed a new flow frame design that removed and integrated bifurcations in the flow path. This new design significantly improved flow uniformity parameters, such as the symmetry coefficient ( C s y m ), variability range coefficient ( R i ), and maximum flow rate deviation ( D m ). Ultimately, we decreased the pressure drop by 15.3% by reducing the number of flow path bifurcations and chevron repositioning.

Résumé :
The high capital cost, driven by the poor performance, still hinders the widespread application of vanadium redox flow batteries. This work compares two different cell designs to demonstrate that the electrolyte flow velocity and pattern is of critical importance to increase the overall battery performance. The Oriented-Distribution-Path (ODP) cell design includes inlet and outlet distribution channels, while the Multi-Distribution-Path (MDP) design does not. The introduction of the distribution channels in the ODP caused the electrolyte flow pattern through the electrode to be less uniform. However, the latter reduced the concentration polarization under high current density and low flow rate conditions. In a charge-discharge cycle comparison, the MDP displayed the highest cell energy efficiency at 80 mA cm−2 and at a flow rate of 300 cm3 min−1. However, the best overall performance was obtained using the ODP at 80 mA cm−2 and a flow rate of 10 cm3 min−1. This work demonstrates that the highest system energy efficiency is achieved when using low flow rates together with a cell design that promotes a high pressure drop. The insights of this study apply to other chemistries making it useful to define guidelines for designing energy-efficient redox flow batteries.

Abstract This study proposes a new seal design to reduce the leakage in turbomachines. On the basis of the conventional labyrinth seal, two vertical blocking walls are added on the rotor, and one horizontal blocking wall is added on the upstream seal tooth and downstream seal tooth. In the new seal, a tortuous flow path is generated, and many vortexes appear. The new seal increases the resistance to the leakage fluid and kinetic energy dissipation. After the comparison of the leakage between the specially designed new seal and conventional labyrinth seal, it can be found that the specially designed new seal yields a reduction in the leakage of 42.7~43.6%.

Résumé :
Non-dispersive near-infrared technique is widely used nowadays for the detection of gases, especially in harsh environments. In this study, an optical gas cell was designed for oxygenator exhaust capnometry. A computer-based simulation was used for the analysis of air flows for model selection. ANSYS Discovery 2020 R2 was used for model simulation. The gas flow cells were tested using a custom-made gas rig to measure the fraction absorbance of carbon dioxide gas at the detector. Two gases were used, nitrogen gas as a reference gas (0%) and 9% carbon dioxide. Three gas cells with the following optical path lengths were tested: 31mm, 36mm, and 40mm. The results showed that all gas flow cells produced laminar flow and small pressure drop across the inlet and outlet of the cell (11~12 Pa). Further, the minimum velocity is obtained in the 40mm gas flow sensor and it is located at the gas outlet path away from the effective optical gas path. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the gas flow cell of 40mm optical path length is more suitable for the intended application as it offers a maximum effective absorption path compared to the stagnation areas, and as a result, it provides the maximum fraction absorbance.

Résumé :
Synthetic unit hydrographs are commonly used to estimate runoff from rainfall events in a hydrologic analysis. A key parameter required as part of any hydrologic analysis using a synthetic unit hydrograph is time of concentration or lag time. Generally, equations used to compute time of concentration or lag time are empirically derived from basin parameters such as area, slope, and a specific flow path length. A more realistic method for determination of flow path travel time is to divide the flow path according to different hydraulic conditions such as sheet flow, shallow concentrated flow and open channel flow as specified in the NRCS method using TR55. Such equations are all based on flow length and the slope of the flow path, two parameters that are easily calculated from GIS vector objects. A method is presented that uses GIS vector objects with equations assigned for the calculation of time of concentration or lag time for use in hydrologic analysis and design.

Résumé :
Abstract On the basis of the method of representative values and the flow pattern, that is, the position of the isobars parallels to the die orifice (PIPDO), the design of dies for the sheet and annular parisons is improved in the present paper. Since this pattern includes the effects of the sloped manifold and the die design for the circular manifold are independent of flow rate and the polymer viscosity, the distribution system of a die gives better uniformity of flow. In the previous study [1] a defect is found, that is, the calculated position of the path of the island area lags behind actual position. This defect is eliminated, and the modified equation is obtained. Another flow pattern, the pressure loss on all flow path is equal (PLFPE), is introduced. The equivalency of the above two flow patterns is proved theoretically. Although the flow uniformity isn’t perfect in the simplified analytical design of dies proposed in the previous paper, this simplified design is still of advantages. Therefore, its design criterion is put forward in this paper.

Résumé :
The automatic generation of flow path is the key and most difficult task in Hydraulic Manifold Blocks (HMB) design. This paper divides the HMB layout space into grids, and sets the HMB boundaries and existing flow paths to obstacles, and the paths generated using maze algorithm are regarded as the initial population of genetic algorithm. The optimal path with the shortest path and least turnings can be obtained using genetic algorithm. The ports of flow path can be connected after the generation of technical holes based on the blind holes. The design parameters of holes, such as starting point coordinates, orientations and depths, can be obtained through a series of algorithms, and then drive the secondary development system HMBDesigner based on SolidWorks to generate three-dimensional solid model. This paper also discusses the generation method of multi-port flow path and multiple flow paths.

Résumé :
State-of-the-art modern microprocessor and domain-specific accelerator designs are dominated by data-paths composed of regular structures, also known as bit-slices. Random logic placement and routing techniques may not result in an optimal layout for these data-path-dominated designs. As a result, implementation tools such as Cadence’s Innovus include a Structured Data-Path (SDP) feature that allows data-path placement to be completely customized by constraining the placement engine. A relative placement file is used to provide these constraints to the tool. However, the tool neither extracts nor automatically places the regular data-path structures. In other words, the relative placement file is not automatically generated. In this paper, we propose a semi-automated method for extracting bit-slices from the Innovus SDP flow. It has been demonstrated that the proposed method results in 17% less density or use for a pixel buffer design. At the same time, the other performance metrics are unchanged when compared to the traditional place and route flow.

Résumé :
The choice and optimization of the rotational speed, the number of stages, the axial velocities distribution, reactivity, diametric dimensions and flow path shape, the blade rows width, changes in the height of the flow path in the compressors and turbines of the gas turbine engine are considered. The method for determining the total pressure recovery ratio and its relationship with the efficiency of blade rows, stages, compressors and turbines is proposed. It is shown that with the same value of this indicator in these elements, the maximum efficiency of compressors and turbines in the composition of turbocompressors is achieved. It is proposed to use this indicator at an early design stage to determine the optimal stages number and the work distribution between them, the change in work along the flow path height. It is shown how the position of the points for the stages and the optimal flow path shape are determined on the Smith diagrams. Various methods are proposed for parameters choosing of the blade profiles for the first, last and for intermediate steps. It is shown how these methods are used when fine-tuning compressors and turbines based on the results of GTE tests. The results of approbation of the developed design and refinement methods are given on examples of changing the geometry of the blade rows and the flow path in the replaceable flow path of the centrifugal blower for the R-16 "Ufa" gas compressor unit, the refinement of the 3-stage LPC for perspective two spool turbofan engine, comparison with the results of simulation in the DVIGw system , 2D and 3D CAD / CAE-modeling.

Résumé :
The present paper is concerned with the design of the plane-strain bending of wide sheets driven by the sheet’s geometric shape after unloading. The solution is based on the ideal flow theory. It determines the loading path (the dependence between the dimensionless bending moment and the dimensionless tensile force) that produces the desirable shape. The ideal flow theory is valid for the rigid perfectly plastic material model. A method proposed in the literature combines a rigid plastic solution at loading and an elastic solution for springback. The final design solution is practically analytical. A numerical method is only necessary to solve a system of transcendental equations. An illustrative example is provided. This example shows that, in some cases, it is sufficient to use the solution at loading to determine an accurate loading path that produces the desirable sheet’s shape after springback.

The flow inside the impeller and diffuser of a turbocharger compressor was analyzed numerically in this paper. The results indicate that the internal flow is disturbed and efficiency is low. There exists a big vortex in the diffuser which dissipates a large amount of energy. Based on the commercial design software, different design parameters were optimized by trial-and-error. Numerical flow analysis results of the final design show that the efficiency is increased by 6.26% and internal flow is improved greatly. It can be concluded that the meridian radius of the impeller flow path has great effect on the compressor performance.

We present a VLSI synthesis environment dedicated to the design of image processing architectures. The environment includes a “front-end” data-flow emulator for validation of the algorithms and the RTL-synthesis system called ALPHA. The latter implements a stochastic search in the design space and produces efficient solutions considering the “restricted” domain of concerned applications. Two simulated Annealing (SA) algorithms run in sequence for data-path synthesis (scheduling and module selection) and then for control synthesis and data-path completion (binding). An interesting feature of the first optimization is the use of the data-flow graph regularity to predict the control influence in terms of the future design. A few designs have already been compiled under this environment including a default detector presented here.

Résumé :
Material flow system design problems (i.e. facility layout, material handling equipment selection and specification, flow path design, unit load sizing, cell design, warehousing, routing, etc.) have been predominately modelled independently in the past. Independent consideration of each design problem has reduced the solution complexity, but in the process has caused a loss in problem reality. This paper reviews recent developments in integrated approaches to material flow design and presents a model which integrates material handling equipment selection and specification (including material handling interface equipment) and path/load dependent unit load size. The formulation is solved using the meta-heuristic procedure of tabu search to find good solutions to the more realistic (and more complex) model formulation.

Résumé :
Axial flow fans are employed in heat exchangers and other engineering systems where the flow path around the fan becomes like a duct. The flow takes place along the axis of rotation of the rotor. The flow is essentially symmetrical to the axis. The design calculations are performed with presumption of flow through cascade of blade and it is the main governing factor of the design too. In this paper procedural calculation for an axial flow fan with profiled blade are presented. Calculations are tabulated for different parameter of radius and angles. On profiling, the increase of outlet angle has been shown which gives ultimate angle opening. The small corrections are therefore obtained. Different parameters used in the design are tabulated to get the calculation more accurately.

Résumé :
The modeling of walking behavior and design of walk-friendly urban pathways have been of interest to many researchers over the past decades. One of the major issues in pedestrian modeling is path planning decision-making in a dynamic walking environment with different pedestrian flows. While previous studies have agreed that pedestrian flow influences path planning, only a few studies have dealt with the empirical data to show the relationship between pedestrian flow and path planning behavior. This study introduces a new methodology for analyzing pedestrian trajectory data to find the dynamic walking conditions that influence the path planning decision. The comparison of the pedestrians’ path shows that the higher proportion of opposite flows are, the greater they influence the path selection decision. In this study, we investigate the relationship between the opposite flow changes and path planning behavior and find the spatial and temporal ranges of the opposite flow that affects the path planning behavior. Lastly, we find the ratio of pedestrians that update their paths with respect to the opposite flow rate.

Résumé :
Fluidized beds are widely used in a variety of industrial processes. The air distributor being an integral part of the fluidized bed, the air flow characteristic through it is of great importance as far as the design and working of it is concerned. Inappropriate design will lead to an incomplete fluidization and improper mixing of the air and bed particles. The current study was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics and predict non-uniformity in flow through the annular distributor of a Swirling Fluidized Bed and its variation with various aspects of the distributor like blade overlap angle and blade inclination. In this study, the commercial CFD package FLUENT 6.3 was used for analysis. The velocity and pressure profiles for various blade designs were investigated at the distributor outlet based on several operating variables including air inlet velocities, blade overlap angles (9o, 12o, 15o, and 18o), blade inclinations (10oand 15o), along with variations in the opening between the distributor blades. The most significant finding of this work is that the fluid tends to flow through a path with least resistance. The flow path with the largest cross section area and shortest path length has been identified and explains the velocity profile at blade exit.

Résumé :
Balancing holes in single-suction centrifugal pumps are generally applied to attenuate the axial thrust caused by a pressure difference between the front side of a shroud and the rear side of a hub of an impeller. The magnetic drive pump, the subject of this study, has a leak-free airtight structure and an integrated structure of the impeller and inner magnet. To prevent the performance degradation of the magnetic drive caused by heat during operation, complex cooling flow paths connected to balancing holes have been designed so that a sufficient amount of coolant would flow around the magnetic drive. Due to this spatial characteristic, when balancing holes are applied to a magnetic drive pump, the balancing hole flow path becomes very long compared to that of balancing holes applied to conventional pumps. When the balancing hole flow path is long, the flow path loss increases, which in turn increases the adverse effect of balancing holes on the pump performance. Therefore, the design of highly efficient balancing holes to which a sufficient amount of coolant can be supplied is critical in a magnetic drive pump. To this end, two types of balancing holes were investigated in this study. First, balancing holes are drilled in the impeller that rotates during operation. Second, balancing holes are drilled in the inner shaft installed to maintain the centre of rotation of the impeller during pump operation. The results confirmed the flow characteristics of the two types of balancing holes and verified the effect of each balancing hole on the pump performance. Finally, this study found that drilling balancing holes in the shaft were appropriate for the magnetic drive pump, and this type can maintain relatively high efficiency and supply a sufficient amount of coolant to maintain the efficiency of the magnetic drive.

Résumé :
Generally, the manufacturing technology of fuel cell units is considered to satisfy the current commercialization requirements. However, achieving a high-performance and durable stack design is still an obstacle in its commercialization. The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is considered to have performance characteristics that are distinct from the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks. Within the SOFC stack, vapor is produced on the anode side instead of the cathode side and high flow resistance within the fuel flow path is recommended. In this paper, a 3D multiphysics model for a one-cell SOFC stack with the interdigitated channels for fuel flow path and conventional paralleled line-type rib channels for air flow path is firstly developed to predict the multiphysics distribution details. The model consists of all the stack components and couples well the momentum, species, and energy conservation and the quasi-electrochemical equations. Through the developed model, we can get the working details within those SOFC stacks with the above interdigitated flow channel features, such as the fuel and air flow feeding qualities over the electrode surface, hydrogen and oxygen concentration distributions within the porous electrodes, temperature gradient distribution characteristics, and so on. The simulated result shows that the multiphysics field distribution characteristics within the SOFC and PEMFC stacks with interdigitated flow channels feature could be very different. The SOFC stack using the paralleled line-type rib channels for air flow path and adopting the interdigitated flow channels for the fuel flow path can be expected to have good collaborative performances in the multiphysics field. This design would have good potential application after being experimentally confirmed.

Résumé :
Valves have wide usage in industries ranging from food industries to petrochemical industries. Existing manufacturing processes, such as casting and forging, limit the design of globe valve to design for manufacturing. The purpose of this study is to optimize the design of current globe valve for optimized flow path. Current design of valve was modelled in CAD software and CFD analysis was performed on its geometry to identify the optimization points. Results obtained from simulations show significant increase in valve’s performance, flow efficiency and decreases in pressure drop. Comparison of flow coefficient between original design and new design show approx. 35% increase in efficiency. Proposed design can be manufactured using additive manufacturing to overcome the manufacturing constraints.
