Flacourtiaceae plants are widely used as folk medicines in traditional medicine systems for its chemical diversity and pharmacological activities. In many different areas, Flacourtiaceae plants are used as traditional medicines for the treatment of ulcers, malaria, rheumatism. The Flacourtiaceae plants contain a very plentiful chemical composition, and phytochemical studies show that the Flacourtiaceae plants contained terpenoids, aromatic glycosides, flavnoids, phenylpropanoids, alkaloids, fatty hydrocarbon, and other compounds. In pharmacological studies, various extract and isolated individual compounds exhibited antitumor, anti-oxidation, and anti-inflammatory activities. In this review, the literature data on the chemical constituents and pharmacological investigations of the Flacourtiaceae plants are summarized, to provide information about a more comprehensive chemical composition and detailed pharmacological activities of Flacourtiaceae plants, with a view of further development of clinical medication. However, research on quantitative analysis, toxicity, and drug safety in vitro and in vivo is still insufficient, and further research is required.

Kiggelaria L. is endemic to Africa and the only representative of tribe Pangieae (Flacourtiaceae) on the continent. Molecular genetics, phytochemistry and host-parasite relationships have indicated a relationship between this woody, pantropical tribe of Flacourtiaceae and a small, trigeneric family of herbaceous, southern African endemics, the Achariaceae. In the present study, ovule and seed structure in Kiggelaria were investigated and compared with relevant data recently reported for Achariaceae. Support for an alliance with Achariaceae were found in the presence of anatropous, bitegmic. sessile ovules with zigzag micropyles. deep-lying embryo sacs covered by an epistase in the ovule and seed, endotestal-exotegmic seed coat layers, suspensorless embryos and sarcotestal seed with a prominent, plate-like hypostase. Unlike Achariaceae. Kiggelaria seeds do not have chalazal seed lids, pronounced raphal ridges, a fringe layer, or stomata in the outer epidermis of the sarcotesta. Structural dissimilarities in seeds of omithochorous Kiggelaria and myrmeco- chorous Achariaceae were regarded as adaptations linked to adifferent strategies for seed germination and dispersal.

Objective: To determine phytochemical, antimicrobial and in vitro antioxidant activity of Flacourtia jangomas (Family: Flacourtiaceae)Methods: The fruit extracts of the plant was taken for the phytochemical screening to identify the phytochemicals present in it. The extracts of the fruits were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and Escherichia coli by disc diffusion method. In vitro, antioxidant activity was performed by reducing power method, TBA method.Results: The n-butanol extracts showed significant antimicrobial activity against all the strains as compared to the standard drug. The extracts also showed antioxidant activity against the standard ascorbic acid.Conclusion: The extracts showed a high amount of antimicrobial activity and antioxidant activity.

Natural products continue to provide unique structural diversity in comparison to standard combinatorial chemistry, which presents opportunities for discovering mainly novel low molecular weight lead compounds. Homalium zeylanicum belonging to family Flacourtiaceae is an important medicinal plant having traditional uses in diabetes, rheumatism and wound healing activities. Chromatographic methods like TLC and HPLC were used for the separation and identification of flavonoids present in methanolic and aqueous leaf extract was studied. The chromatographic methods available for the separation of flavonoids in TLC and HPLC were adopted for the study. Three compounds were identified in TLC study in methanolic leaf extracts. In HPLC analysis, peaks corresponding to flavonoids were obtained and were identified by comparing with literature and confirm that methanolic extract contains Rutin, Quercetin and Myricetin where as in aqueous extract Quercetin, Myricetin and Kaempferol were observed. The anti diabetic activity of isolated compounds was determined by literature and confirms that compounds were found to having potent anti diabetic activity. This proves that the anti-diabetic activity of Homalium zeylanicum was due to the presence of these bio-active compounds

Introduction and Aim: Flacourtia indica (Burm.f.) Merr. is a member of the family Flacourtiaceae. This herb was used to treat a range of ailments and served as the foundation for ethnomedicine. Despite its enormous medical importance, the plant has received very little research with only a few antibacterial and pharmacological studies. The plant's roots, in particular, are understudied. In this study, the antioxidant and antifungal activities of methanol (MeOH) root extract of F. indica was tested in vitro. Materials and Methods: Antifungal activity was assessed against human fungal pathogens, Aspergillus niger (MTCC 404) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (MTCC 7687). The natural antioxidants in roots were studied using five different antioxidant methods, including 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide scavenging (NOS), reducing power assay (RPA), measuring total phenolic content (TPC) by Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR). Results: When compared to Aspergillus niger, the root extract has strong antifungal activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes (MTCC 7687), generating a broader zone of inhibition (MTCC 404). Clotrimazole is a common antifungal medicine that can be used as a positive control in this investigation. The antioxidant activity of MeOH root extract increased in a dose-dependent manner, and it had outstanding NOS and antioxidant properties. Conclusion: The results conclude that, F. indica appears to be a promising herbal option for the treatment of a variety of fungal and bacterial infections, with high antioxidant capacity.

To investigate the many bacteriocidal properties of chaulmoogra oil, which are used to treat leprosy and TB. Chaulmoogric acid, an antibacterial substance, is the main active component of chaulmoogra oil. The common name Chaulmoogra is used to refer to the tree Hydnocarpus kurzii, which belongs to the Flacourtiaceae family. Thailand, Myanmar, and India are the native countries of this tree. The two main Indian states where this tree can be found are Assam and Tripura. The ripe seeds of plants like Taraktogenos kurzii King, also called Hydnocarpus kurzii (King) Warb., Hydnocarpus wightiana Blume, Hydnocarpus anthelminticta Pierre, Hydnocarpus heterophylla, and other species of Hydnocarpus that are members of the Flacourtiaceae family are used to make the fixed oil known as chaulmoogra. Chaulmoogra oil has powerful bactericidal effect against the bacteria that cause leprosy and tuberculosis because it contains unsaturated fatty acids. Leprosy, TB, gout, and skin disorders have all been treated with it for millennia in Ayurveda.

This study was conducted at Ades forest in West Hararghe Zone, Ethiopia, for determining the woody species composition and regeneration status of the forest. Systematic sampling method was used to collect vegetation data from 48 (20 m×20 m) main sample plots for woody species that was established along a transect line and spaced at 10 m altitudinal drop, from top to the bottom of the natural forest. Inside the main plot (400 m2), subplots (5 m×5 m) were established to simplify the counting of seedlings and saplings. Species abundance and environmental variables were recorded in each sample plot. A total of 48 woody plant species belonging to 42 genera and 29 families were identified. Fabaceae family had the highest number of taxa followed by Rosaceae and Flacourtiaceae families. Woody plant species densities for mature individuals were 197.9 ha-1, saplings 420 ha-1and 849.5 ha-1for seedlings. Although over all regeneration status of woody plants of the Forest revealed good regeneration status, the presence of anthropogenic disturbance in the area necessitates the need for conservation action in order to ensure sustainable utilisation and management of the Forest.
