Fisheries and aquaculture industry, which provides a continuous and high-return market advantage to potential countries, is also one of the priority industries for Turkey. Although Turkey has important advantages with its geographic position and bio-diversity, the industry's contribution to foreign trade is not at an acceptable level. Accordingly, it is important to evaluate the capture fishery and aquaculture products, which provide the best contribution to the foreign trade of Turkey. Thus, the present paper aims to provide foreign trade executives with an intuition about the most appropriate products to invest in and contributing products to Turkish foreign trade within the scope of market strategies. Entropy-WASPAS, which is a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making method, is used for evaluating the contribution of fishery and aquaculture products to Turkish foreign trade. This model includes both criteria (production, import quantity, import value, export quantity, export value) and alternatives (trout, sea bream, sea bass, sprat, atlantic bonito, anchovy, horse mackerel, pilchard, sea snail, prawn, cuttle fish, mussel). Entropy is used to determine the criteria weights, and WASPAS is applied for ranking the fishery and aquaculture products. According to the results, export value is the most important criteria while Sea Bream is found as the most significant product for Turkey’s foreign trade.

Marketing strategies play a significant role in determining farm income. Although direct marketing has been proposed as an innovative way to improve producers’ economic welfare, little is known about producers’ adoption of direct marketing among aquaculture farms. This study examines the adoption of wholesaler markets, individual wholesalers or shippers, and direct marketing among aquaculture farms. In addition, we quantify the effects of the use of different marketing channels on fishery revenues, profits, and production inputs. A sample of 25,180 aquaculture family farms in Taiwan was drawn from the fishery census survey. After estimating the simultaneous equation system model, we find that the use of multiple marketing channels generates the highest fishery revenues, which highlights the importance of marketing channel diversity on selling fishery products. Moreover, we find a positive effect of direct marketing on fishery revenues and profits. We also find that the use of direct marketing can reduce the use of groundwater in aquaculture production. Since the decrease in groundwater use can mitigate the severity of land subsidence, this paper provides evidence that direct marketing can possibly provide a win-win strategy to improve fishery producers’ revenues and environmental quality.

AbstractIn February 2016, the Feasibility Report on options for an EU ecolabel scheme for fishery and aquaculture products was published. The study did not make a strong case for the introduction of a seafood EU Ecolabel and it is unlikely that the European Commission will pursue this policy option. We argue that sustainability information on seafood should not be framed through the EU Ecolabel debate. The more pressing issue concerns self-declared sustainability claims on seafood products. As a possible solution, we propose to address these by re-invigorating the labelling rules on seafood information in the Regulation on the Common Organisation of the Markets in Fishery and Aquaculture Products.

Abstract One of the islands with huge potential for fishery in South Bangka Regency is the Pongok Islands. Most of the people living in the islands depend on marine and fishery resources. This research aimed to figure out fishery potencies located in the surrounding island of Pongok related to capture fishery, fish food processing, and aquaculture. Data were gathered on field observation and interviews conducting on August 2022. Results of the research three main fishery activities in this area are capture fishery, fish product processing, and aquaculture. The capture fishery is taken for pelagic and coral fish. Some economic fish are anchovy, sardine, squids, and mackerel kingfish. Harvesting each commodity is different due to species and season of wind blowing as well as fishing gear. Fish products of the island are marketed in Toboali, Pangkal Pinang, and Belitung, and even transported to Pontianak and Jakarta. Aquaculture activity is only conducted for raising groupers using floating nets. Moreover, environmental aspects of mariculture, two new fishery commodities like seaweeds and pearl oysters, have the potential to be introduced into the islands. Environmental services have still contributed directly and indirectly to the fishery activities on the islands now and then.

Graphical Abstract Highlight Research Tuban (Indonesia) aquaculture commodities are surveyed. Aquaculture diversity in Tuban are consisted of 5 fields, namely rice field ponds, floating net cages, freshwater ponds, and brackish aquaculture ponds Aquaculture commodities in Tuban consist of 11 families and 14 species of the main aquatic production. Cyprinus carpio or common carp is one of the commodities cultivated in four different aquacultures. Abstract Fishery is a sector expected to overcome the food crisis. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in high volumes of fishery production in most of its areas, including the Regency of Tuban in East Java Province. The area of Tuban Regency is 1,839.94 km2 with the coastline covers 65 km and a sea area of 22,608 km2. This study aims to provide information regarding aquaculture production, diversity, and distribution in Tuban. This study used a survey method in collecting fishery commodity data directly from aquaculture areas. The results of this study showed that the highest production came from the brackish water with a value of 32.46% (13,561.79 tons), followed by rice field pond (27.79% or 11,612.45 tons), freshwater pond (25.76% or 10,764.62 tons), floating net cage (13.97% or 5,836.59 tons), and marine (0.1% or 5.67 tons). Aquaculture biodiversity in Tuban consisted of 11 families and 14 species of the main aquatic produces, such as Cyprinidae (Cyprinus carpio, Barbonymus gonionotus, Parastromateus niger), Clariidae (Clarias bathracus), Pangasiidae (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), Penaeidae (Penaeus monodon, Litopenaeus vannamei), Channidae (Channa striata), Cichlidae (Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis mosammbicus), Osphronemidae (Osphronemus gourami), Serranidae (Epinephelus), Lutjanidae (Lutjanus), and Chanidae (Chanos chanos). Cyprinus carpio or common carp is fish cultivated in four different aquacultures, namely rice field pond, floating net cages, freshwater ponds, and brackish aquaculture ponds. Unfortunately, the diversity and production of marine aquaculture has not been improved even though Tuban has large marine areas.

Seafood by-products, produced by a range of different organisms, such as fishes, shellfishes, squids, and bivalves, are usually discarded as wastes, despite their possible use for innovative formulations of functional foods. Considering that “wastes” of industrial processing represent up to 75% of the whole organisms, the loss of profit may be coupled with the loss of ecological sustainability, due to the scarce recycling of natural resources. Fish head, viscera, skin, bones, scales, as well as exoskeletons, pens, ink, and clam shells can be considered as useful wastes, in various weight percentages, according to the considered species and taxa. Besides several protein sources, still underexploited, the most interesting applications of fisheries and aquaculture by-products are foreseen in the biotechnological field. In fact, by-products obtained from marine sources may supply bioactive molecules, such as collagen, peptides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidant compounds, and chitin, as well as catalysts in biodiesel synthesis. In addition, those sources can be processed via chemical procedures, enzymatic and fermentation technologies, and chemical modifications, to obtain compounds with antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-cancer, anti-hypertensive, anti-diabetic, and anti-coagulant effects. Here, we review the main discards from fishery and aquaculture practices and analyse several bioactive compounds isolated from seafood by-products. In particular, we focus on the possible valorisation of seafood and their by-products, which represent a source of biomolecules, useful for the sustainable production of high-value nutraceutical compounds in our circular economy era.

Apart from being a tourist destination,Ranu Klakah, is also used as a fishing business location for capture and aquaculture. Local people use it as a place for fish farming using the floating net cage (KJA) method which has quite a large potential. Currently problems faced by floating net cage fish farmers in Ranu Klakah is the unavailability of adequate fishery facilities and infrastructure, both fisheries and aquaculture, the low application of fishery technology in the field of aquaculture and marketing of fishery products and the low quality of human resources for fisheries sector business. The Doctoral Community Service Program (Doktor Mengabdi/DM) Universitas Brawijaya offers several programs to help solve some of the problems encountered by fish farmers. The article represents the study of the development of the basic principles of the regulation in the market of fish and organic aquaculture products in the world and the adaptation of the principles, methods, and tools of state regulation in order to develop proposals for the effective functioning of this market in Ukraine. The fact that there is a demand for organic fish has been proven, which, in the long run, encourages the development of effective strategies to meet the needs of consumers. Organic aquaculture has significantly impacted economic aspects such as niche food production, ecology, environment, and rural development. The transition from conventional to organic aquaculture production in Ukraine takes time. However, it can bring significant benefits, including improving the quality of fish and fish products, preserving the environment, increasing consumer awareness, rural development, and industry competitiveness. It is proposed to consider the needs of target markets and consumer demand for the further development of organic aquaculture in Ukraine and the world. Organic aquaculture can be an essential direction for developing fish farming providing high-quality and environmentally friendly organic aquaculture products. For this, it is necessary to improve the mechanisms and methods of state industry regulation while creating conditions for fish producers through regulatory measures to meet the needs of consumers in organic aquaculture products. The dynamics of the formation of the system of EU regulations and UN FAO documents in organic production are given. It was concluded that the further improvement of the normative and legal regulation method is a priority task for ensuring the quality of manufactured organic products and the stability of the functioning of the fishery. Organic production has its characteristics and requirements, which lead to the provision of control, supervision of certification, and labeling of products, which encourage further research in conditions of extraordinary challenges. Topicality. Modern transformations associated with radical changes in the system of international and national security, including those caused by the growing shortage of food products and the threat of famine, determine the growing need for a new understanding of food security problems both at the international and national levels. This problem is becoming more and more relevant for Ukraine as well, which was mostly exacerbated as a result of russia's military aggression. One of the important assets of Ukraine in terms of solving food security problems is its fishing potential.
Aim and tasks. This work aims to consider some basic theoretical, methodological and applied aspects of mobilization of natural resource potential and economic assets of the fishery sector of the economic system of Ukraine. At the same time, the main task of solving the specified target problems in the work is the system generalization and program-target organization of driving forces that can really be mobilized in the direction of the revival of fisheries and the development of aquaculture in Ukraine.
Materials and methods. This study used primarily national regulatory and legal materials that determine state policy in the field of development of the agro-industrial complex, fisheries and aquaculture, in particular, the Law of Ukraine "On Aquaculture", as well as foreign materials reflecting modern food security problems. In terms of methodological support of the research, the author paid attention to the possibilities of using modern apparatus for the study of complex developing systems in conditions of crisis transformation, as well as modern ideologues of such scientific areas as conflictology, riskology, theory of nonlinear systems.
Research results. The work presents the results of theoretical and methodological discussions and applied aspects of the formation of a new fishery complex of Ukraine. The long-term prospects of its revival are associated with the mobilization model of the development of continental aquaculture and marine culture of reproduction (mariculture). Particular attention is paid to the driving forces of the revival of the national fishery and aquaculture. In the work, driving forces are defined as an integrated set of two basic components: the needs and interests of society in the production of fishery products; availability and possibilities of effective implementation of state resources and assets.
Conclusion. The theoretical and methodological approaches discussed in the work to the activation of the driving forces of aquaculture development should be considered as an important scientific and applied basis for the revival of fisheries and aquaculture in Ukraine in the context of growing socio-economic and ecological conflict, including those associated with military aggression of russia, attention is drawn to the fact that Ukraine has a very large and favorable natural resource potential both for the production of agricultural products and products of the fishery sector of the economy. As an outpost of the revival and development of the Ukrainian fishery and its promising key sector - aquaculture an mariculture − the sea coastal zone is consi ere in relation to the water management potential of the coastal regions of Ukraine.

Cette thèse de doctorat porte sur la consommation des produits de la pêche et de l’aquaculture (PPA). Elle s’intéresse à mieux orienter les consommateurs vers des comportements de consommation plus durables, notamment au travers de l’utilisation des labels. Le marché français est utilisé comme cas d’étude. Cette thèse démontre notamment le caractère non-durable de la consommation française de PPA du point de vue environnemental et santé. Développer l'information et les connaissances des consommateurs envers cette filière est une étape essentielle pour l’adoption de comportements plus vertueux. Si les labels sont un outil pour guider les consommateurs dans leur choix de consommation, cette thèse démontre que les préférences pour ces démarches de labellisation sont aujourd’hui très hétérogènes. Les préférences exprimées sont principalement égoïstes, là où la demande éthique reste, elle, plus secondaire. Ce travail démontre aussi l’influence du caractère littoral sur les préférences exprimées, et sur les connaissances des consommateurs vis-à-vis du secteur des PPA. Finalement, ce travail démontre qu’associer deux labels sur un même produit (un écolabel et une allégation sûreté) n’est pas forcément valorisé par les consommateurs, et que la méthode de production (pêche vs aquaculture) influence les préférences des consommateurs pour ces labelsThis dissertation focuses on the consumption of fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs). The aim of this work is to bettre understand how to guide consulers towards more sustainable consumption, in particular through the use of labels. The French market is used as a case study. This thesis demonstrates the unsustainable nature of French consumption of FAPs from an environmental and health point of view.Improving consumers' knowledge of the FAP sector is essential to guide them towards more virtuous behaviour. Although labels are a growing tool to inform and guide consumers in their consumption choices, this thesis shows that their preferences for these labelling approaches are currently very heterogeneous. Consumer’s preferences remain egoistic, while ethical demand remains secondary.Our work also shows the influence of coastal areas, on consumer’s and knowledge of the FAP sector. Finally, this work is interested in the association between an ecolabel and a safety claim. It shows that the combination of two labels on the same product is not necessarily valued by consumers and that the production method (wild vs. farmed) influences consumers' preferences for these two labels

Research has been actively looking for alternative feed ingredients to reduce the reliance of the aquafeed industry on marine ingredients, namely fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO). In this context, insects, in particular housefly (Musca domestica) and black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae, have been identified as promising candidates. Although a global insect farming industry is emerging, it is for now constrained by regulatory and technical bottlenecks that raise the question ‘where and how insect-based products could be integrated into aquaculture’. The literature indicated a high interspecies variability of the results when replacing FM with insect meals in fish diets and previous work failed to consider the existing challenges related to the insect production to demonstrate commercial relevance and applicability. In this thesis, maggot meals (MM) and frass (insect digestate) were assessed as strategic feed ingredients for two commercially important farmed species: Atlantic salmon, (Salmo salar) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), in their relevant contexts. Case studies showed that both housefly and BSF MM are high quality feed ingredients and suitable alternative to FM. Specifically, dietary inclusions of up to 200 g/kg of crude or defatted housefly larvae meal did not compromised the feed digestibility and utilisation and the growth performance and body composition of salmon parr (freshwater stage), compared to a FM-based control diet. Hormone (17α-methyltestosterone) treated diets containing between 250 and 1000 g/kg BSF or housefly meal were found as effective as a commonly used pure hormone-treated FM in sex-reversal process leading to 99.8 to 100% males, high survival and evenness of the fish produced. In a commercial diet for advanced nursing of Nile tilapia fingerlings, up to 80 g/kg BSF meal was included without impairing the fish performance and body composition; dietary inclusion was limited by the lipid content of the crude MM. Finally, BSF frass derived from brewery spent grains or processed food wastes were found more effective when used as soil bio-fertilisers with minimum application rate of 10.0 tonnes/ha or 5.0 tonnes/ha, respectively (for a spring onion culture), rather than supplemental feeds for tilapia farmed in semi-intensive conditions (fertilised pond). The study also indicated that site-specific conditions should be accounted to support appropriate and sustainable use of insect-based products but in any case, juvenile fish should be strategically targeted given their requirements. It is expected that this approach, could support the sustainable intensification of aquaculture and contribute more broadly to food security whilst contributing to the development of a circular economy.

Geostatistical methodology has been employed in the modelling of spatiotemporal data from various scientific fields by viewing the data as realisations of space-time random functions. Traditional geostatistics aims to model the spatial variability of a process so, in order to incorporate a time dimension into a geostatistical model, the fundamental differences between the space and time dimensions must be acknowledged and addressed. The main conceptual viewpoint of geostatistical spatiotemporal modelling identified within the literature views the process as a single random function model utilising a joint space-time covariance function to model the spatiotemporal continuity. Geostatistical space-time modelling has been primarily data driven, resulting in models that are suited to the data under investigation, usually survey data involving fixed locations. Space-time geostatistical modelling of fish stocks within the fishing season is limited as the collection of fishery-independent survey data for the spatiotemporal sampling design is often costly or impractical. However, fishery-dependent commercial catch and effort data, throughout each season, are available for many fisheries as part of the ongoing monitoring program to support their stock assessment and fishery management. An example of such data is prawn catch and effort data from the Shark Bay managed prawn fishery in Western Australia. The data are densely informed in both the spatial and temporal dimensions and cover a range of locations at each time instant. Both catch and effort variables display an obvious spatiotemporal continuity across the fishing region and throughout the season. There is detailed spatial and temporal resolution as skippers record their daily fishing shots with associated latitudinal and longitudinal positions. In order to facilitate the ongoing management of the fishery, an understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics of various prawn species within season is necessary. A suitable spatiotemporal model is required in order to effectively capture the joint space-time dependence of the prawn data. An exhaustive literature search suggests that this is the first application of geostatistical space-time modelling to commercial fishery data, with the development and evaluation of an integrated space-time geostatistical model that caters for the commercial logbook prawn catch and effort data for the Shark Bay fishery. The model developed in this study utilises the global temporal trend observed in the data to standardise the catch rates. Geostatistical spatiotemporal variogram modelling was shown to accurately represent the spatiotemporal continuity of the catch data, and was used to predict and simulate catch rates at unsampled locations and future time instants in a season. In addition, fishery-independent survey data were used to help improve the performance of catch rate estimates.

This simple configuration has served well for over 100 million years.

In an attempt to describe the location of the study, relevant information covering the catchment, local geology, reservoir construction and flora and fauna is included.The Authority's remit suggested a study of three facets of the catchment, namely, a study of the native fish populations, a monitoring of the recently opened fishery and an analysis of operational filter plate impingement.In order to minimise disturbance of the sport fishery, native fish population work was necessarily limited to the reservoir's three major afferent streams, the River Hodder, Hasgill Beck and Bottoms Beck.As a preliminary measure of tributary stream status, a simple invertebrate site study was undertaken by the researcher in 1985.Fish population work based on catch per unit effort (CPUE) was pursued in the spring, summer and winter of 1985, 1986 and 1987 at 8 sites, employing D. C. electric fishing equipment, whilst Carle and Strub's (1978) MWL Method was adopted for population estimations. The validity of the electric fishing survey and age determination are discussed in the text.The native species of brown trout, bullhead, stone loach and minnow were encountered, as was the introduced rainbow trout. Species densities and the population structure of the native brown trout were examined in detail for each survey site. The River Hodder was revealed to be the least populous tributary, whilst Hasgill Beck exhibited the greatest fish densities. Spawning migrations of native brown trout were evident, with fry recruitment at its optimum at site 4 on Hasgill Beck and site 8 on Bottoms Beck. The waterfall on Bottoms Beck might well have precluded upstream access to the head waters of this tributary. Observed mean brown trout length for age data were similar to those recorded by authors researching other upland stream locations.The history of Stocks Reservoir as a sport fishery is outlined prior to the present leaseholder's opening of the reservoir as a day ticket fly fishery for the 1985 season. The water was stocked predominantly with rainbow trout, together with some brook trout and brown trout before fishing commenced.The present study covering the seasons 1985 to 1987 was based primarily on data abstracted from catch return forms, which displayed a notably high rate of submission, and stocking consent data provided by NWW. The validity of return form data is discussed.Over the three seasons studied, angler patronage was observed to decline by 16%, whilst the number of fish caught and taken also declined by 34.8% and 20.5% respectively. Angler success was similarly observed to decline in accord with the decrease in patronage and catches. Interestingly, there was an increased reliance on introductions of rainbow trout over the period, including larger fish, and by 1987 a cessation in the stocking of other trout species.From correlations observed between environmental parameters and angler patronage, anglers appeared to prefer fishing in dry, sunny conditions, but decreases in angler success occurred during periods of increased water turbidity. Such declines in success also displayed congruity with decreases in angler patronage.From a comparison undertaken with a cross-section of English and Welsh stillwater trout fisheries, Stocks Reservoir was judged to rate poorly, returning the lowest performance data in the upland stocked category.An examination of the stomach and hind gut contents of 127 rainbow trout, 7 brook trout and 8 brown trout caught by anglers, was undertaken in the 1985 and 1986 seasons, and was compared with the reservoir fauna data of Mills, M. L. (1971).A description of the water treatment plant and its operation is delineated, and a pertinent collection of fish impingement and screening literature is included.Impingement data were collated from lst March 1985 to 31st December 1987 from routine and emergency cleaning of the filter plates. After storage in a freezer, the thawed fish were examined chronologically, identified, measured and weighed. During the examinations a random sample of stomach and hind guts was procured, and scales from brown trout were removed for possible future reference.The total annual impingement was observed to vary considerably, although brown trout habitually exhibited the greatest losses, comprising 71%, 64% and 89% of fish impinged annually. Of the introduced species, rainbow trout and brook trout, brook trout were the more susceptible to impingement, but remarkably few rainbow trout were lost considering the number stocked.Rainbow trout and brook trout of medium (150mm to 300mm) and large (>300mm) length classes were impinged, whereas many smaller (<150mm) brown trout were lost, a phenomenon concurrent with the recruitment of juvenile stream fish to the reservoir population.Brown trout in particular exhibited an annual dissimilarity in rates of impingement, probably suggesting that seasonal migration was not causative of their increased impingement.Impingement of rainbow trout showed limited correlation with environmental parameters. In 1985 and 1986, increased impingement of both brown trout and brook trout was significantly correlated with low reservoir levels, and to some extent might be linked to rising values of water turbidity.The collecting of stomach and hind gut samples from impinged fish was discontinued after 1985 because of problems in collection associated with delays in sampling and probable regurgitation of stomach contents. The problem of eye fluke infestation in impinged fish was noted and enumerated as sampling progressed.A brief discussion of further routes of operational fish loss from the reservoir is included.

A problem commonly encountered in stock assessments of tropical marine resources in developing countries is data paucity, which invariably results from the lack of both human and economic capacity within the government to implement and maintain programmes for data collection and analysis. With special reference to the demersal fishery of Brunei Darussalam, this thesis examines approaches for extracting useful information from data-poor fisheries to assess the state of resources and inform fishery management actions. By using official fishery statistics, augmented by local ecological knowledge (LEK) obtained from fishers engaged in either the large-scale (LS) or small-scale (SS) fisheries in Brunei, changes in demersal fishery resources over the years were assessed. The sustainability of Brunei’s demersal capture fishery was evaluated in the face of its ongoing development and climate change. Using trophodynamic indicators such as mean trophic level (MTL), Fishing-in- Balance (FiB), trophic spectra (TS) and community structure analyses, LS fishery catches of Brunei between 2000 and 2009 revealed a deteriorating state of the coastal demersal ecosystem. Closer examination of the abundance of overall demersal finfish stocks, using the Catch-Per-Unit-Effort (CPUE) index – standardised for other factors not related to abundance – indicated a declining trend, even when total catches remained stationary, although trends in abundance of the different demersal fish families varied. This rapid significant change in recent years is further supported by fishers’ LEK on relative abundance of Brunei marine resources. The study on LEK has also revealed the ‘shifting baseline syndrome’ (SBS) among currently active fishers and their exploited populations, a phenomenon not previously reported for Brunei fisheries. Findings from the study are synthesised with other information, where a number of key issues and policy options are discussed, and recommendations for the management of the fishery are made. This thesis demonstrates that researchers in data-poor fisheries can utilise different assessment tools, given the resources at their disposal, to assist in the management of marine resources.

AbstractThe study of traditional marine stakeholders, such as small-scale fishers in the Mediterranean, represents a site of a changing seascape. This is characterized by impeding factors of the past but also a possibility for improved future trajectories. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) have played a crucial socio-economic role in the Mediterranean for decades, and they continue to comprise over 80% of the fishing fleets and provide direct and indirect economic contributions to coastal communities. Their contribution to blue economy has so far been described as low, but this is largely due to a narrow conception both of benefits to be drawn from the development of maritime sectors (which have focused strongly on economic growth) and types of innovation that are capable of supporting the transition to sustainability (which have overlooked social innovation). This chapter outlines the multi-scale contributions of the small-scale fisheries and presents innovative approaches of the sector towards the markets, both of which support the inclusion of SSF in the blue economy sector. The chapter focuses on key instances of recently developed initiatives by the SSF across the Mediterranean with impacts on the supply chain and the marketing of their products. We argue that these market interventions contribute to the ultimate governance objectives, and challenge the conception of SSF as a non-innovative sector. We propose that a richer engagement with the blue economy paradigm supports the perception of the SSF as a prospective sector, to match the promotion of aquaculture among others.

The mandatory requirements for the fishery and aquaculture products, their production and sale in force in the territory of the Customs Union of the Eurasian Economic Union (CU EAEU) arise from the regulatory and legal acts of the Eurasian Economic Union and its predecessor - the Customs Union - and apply in a package approach similar to the law of the European Union pertaining to the food safety area. The requirements of the EAEU technical regulations have been analysed taking into account that European exporting enterprises are first of all obliged to comply with the requirements of the listed EU regulatory and legal acts applicable to their production process and products. The aim of this paper was to run a comparative analysis on the mandatory requirements of the food legislation of the European and Customs Unions regarding fishery and aquaculture products, their production and sale. The issues of certification of certain product categories are analysed separately, the requirements for canned fish being highlighted. The analysis is relevant for all fish processing companies which may consider the possibility of starting export to the countries of the CU EAEU and are intended to reduce costs associated with products’ entry into these markets.

Aquaculture by-products, such as oyster shells, clam shells, and fish scales, are considered business wastes and are frequently discarded and buried without treatment, causing environmental and ecological problems. To recycle fishery waste, this study proposed using recycled materials such as oyster shell powders, clam shell powders, and fish scale fragments as aggregate substitutes in cement mortar for making cement tiles. The application of cement materials is diverse, ranging from indoor and outdoor landscape decoration and building materials to artistic creations and home decoration products. This study is proposed to produce cement tiles with a richer window grilles surface texture. First, wastes from the aquaculture industry, such as oyster shells, clam shells, and fish scales, were washed, ground, and mixed with cement mortar in different proportions to produce cement tiles, which were then subjected to relevant tests to assess their physical properties such as water absorption, compressive strength, flexural strength, and warpage. The cement tiles that meet the CNS specification for indoor wall tiles were further integrated into the window grilles processing.

The production of aquaculture products still needs to be increased to match marine products. One of the problems that cause cultivation fishery production is not optimal is that it has not utilized modern technology. Cultivators still use traditional methods and technologies in cultivation. One of the contemporary technologies that can support aquaculture is Automation Technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). This research will develop an IoT-based technology, which is a system to help fish maintenance management. This system is based on a static robot that will monitor the condition of pond water quality and feed the fish automatically, which can be controlled remotely by adopting an IoT architecture.Furthermore, an evaluation of cultivators/farmers regarding Adopting Intention (AI) of this technology. The evaluation model adopted the model proposed by (Kao et al., 2019). This model explores the direct influence of perceived usability, performance expectations, perceived technology usefulness, network externality, user creativity, and domain-specific information on intent and their indirect impact on user behavior.

Organic production in the Republic of Serbia is controlled production, officially regulated by the Law on Organic Production ("Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia", No. 30/10, 17/2019) that provided the legal basis for the adoption of regulations - Rulebook on control and certification in organic production and methods of organic production ("Official Gazette of RS", No. 095/2020) and the Rulebook on documentation submitting for certificate issuance by the authorized organization and organic products trading requirements ("Official Gazette of RS", No. 88/16). The Law on Organic Production regulates the production of agricultural and other products, goals, principles and methods of organic production and control, certification, processing, labeling, storage, transport, trade, import and export of organic products as well as other issues of importance for organic production. The provisions of the Act are applied to products originating from all stages of organic production - plant and livestock, including aquaculture products for market. Organic products are not considered to be products obtained by hunting and fishery. The system of organic products control in the Republic of Serbia was established in accordance to the European Union regulations- Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007, Commission Regulation (EC) No 886/2008). On January 2021, these regulations will expire. The new Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council on organic production and labeling of organic products (Regulation (EU) 2018/848) will enter into force in order to respond to growing consumers demands and expectations.

In modern-day conditions, sustainable territorial development aims to find additional opportunities for regions to maintain their competitiveness while maximizing the use of available local resources and creating conditions for investment in activities that preserve, maintain and improve the local environment. Activities such as fishing, the production of fishery and aquaculture products; coastal tourism; blue biotechnology fall within the scope of the so-called "blue economy". The Blue growth strategy is focused on the sustainable territorial development of fishing areas by supporting, initiating change and integrating the efforts of all stakeholders to achieve the strategic objectives. The main purpose of this report is to present the results of a survey which examines the attitudes of local business representatives, public administration and academics towards the development of activities in the coastal zone of the Local Fisheries Initiative Group (FLAG) Varna - Beloslav - Aksakovo within the blue economy. On the basis of a future development strategy, strategic areas of development are outlined.

The paper evaluates the biodiversity of the selected taxa and establishes the colonization dependence of microorganisms on the habitat conditions of rainbow trout. The dependence between some taxa of bacteria in the composition of the intestinal microflora of fish is shown.

The paper analyzes the results of the implementation of measures to release Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes, 1844) into water bodies of fishery importance in the Azov-Black Sea basin for the purpose of biological melioration in 2023. A total of 7,123256 million specimens of juveniles were released. It is shown that the largest number of grass carp was released into the Tsimlyansk Reservoir (Volgograd Region). It is concluded that insufficient release of C. idella juveniles is observed in almost all water bodies.

Herons and egrets commonly cause damage at aquaculture facilities and recreational fishing waters where fish are held at high densities. Fish-eating birds also can have an impact on intensively managed sport fisheries. Damage occurs when herons and egrets feed on fish purchased and released for recreational sport fishing activities. Values of these fish can be quite high given the intensity of management activities and the direct relationship of fishery quality to property value. Herons and egrets are freshwater or coastal birds of the family Ardeidae. Herons and egrets discussed in this section are all piscivorous. They are opportunistic feeders, however, and will consume small amphibians, insects, and reptiles. Due to these food preferences, herons and egrets are attracted to shallow lakes and human-made impoundments. Native bird species are covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) and given federal protection. Depredation permits can be obtained through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In addition, individual states may require their own permits for legal take of these bird species.

Background Most of Australian prawn aquaculture production is based on P. monodon. However, the Australian industry is under intense competition from lower priced overseas imports. As for the redclaw production in Israel, although it is at its infancy, the growers realized that the production of males is extremely advantageous and that such management strategy will change the economic assumptions and performances of this aquaculture to attract many more growers. Original objectives (as in original proposal) Investigating the sex inheritance mechanism in the tiger prawn. Identification of genes expressed uniquely in the androgenic gland (AG) of prawns and crayfish. The above genes and/or their products will be used to localize the AG in the prawn and manipulate the AG activity in both species. Production of monosex populations through AG manipulation. In the prawn, production of all-female populations and in the crayfish, all-male populations. Achievements In the crayfish, the AG cDNA library was further screened and a third AG specific transcript, designated Cq-AG3, had been identified. Simultaneously the two AG specific genes, which were previously identified, were further characterized. Tissue specificity of one of those genes, termed Cq-AG2, was demonstrated by northern blot hybridization and RNA in-situ hybridization. Bioinformatics prediction, which suggested a 42 amino acid long signal anchor at the N-terminus of the deduced Cq-AG2, was confirmed by immunolocalization of a recombinant protein. Cq-IAG's functionality was demonstrated by dsRNA in-vivo injections to intersex crayfish. Cq-IAGsilencing induced dramatic sex-related alterations, including male feature feminization, reduced sperm production, extensive testicular apoptosis, induction of the vitellogeningene expression and accumulation of yolk proteins in the ovaries. In the prawn, the AG was identified and a cDNA library was created. The putative P. monodonAG hormone encoding gene (Pm-IAG) was identified, isolated and characterized for time of expression and histological localization. Implantation of the AG into prawn post larvae (PL) and juveniles resulted in phenotypic transformation which included the appearance of appendix masculina and enlarged petasma. The transformation however did not result in sex change or the creation of neo males thus the population genetics stage to be executed with Prof. Hulata did not materialized. Repeated AG implantation is currently being trialed. Major conclusions and Implications, both scientific and agricultural Cq-IAG's involvement in male sexual differentiation had been demonstrated and it is strongly suggested that this gene encodes an AG hormone in this crayfish. A thorough screening of the AG cDNA library shows Cq-IAG is the prominent transcript within the library. However, the identification of two additional transcripts hints that Cq-IAG is not the only gene mediating the AG effects. The successful gene silencing of Cq-IAG, if performed at earlier developmental stages, might accomplish full and functional sex reversal which will enable the production of all-male crayfish populations. Pm-IAG is likely to play a similar role in prawns. It is possible that repeated administration of the AG into prawn will lead to the desired full sex reversal, so that WZ neo males, crossed with WZ females can result in WW females, which will form the basis for monosex all-female population.

The debate in commercial fishery management has evolved from whether well-defined rights are necessary for sustainability to measuring the impacts of different rights-based system designs. Most assessments are on developed world fisheries. Using a unique collection of datasets, we develop counterfactuals to evaluate the impacts of the Chilean Jack Mackerelcatch share program. We investigate vessel and trip characteristics, as well as trip costs and revenues, before and after the implementation of the program. We find an increase in higher value products and associated revenue, as well as consolidation of catch on larger vessels, vessels taking longer trips, and catching more per trip. Overall, we estimate that the program led to a measureable increase in fishing profits, mainly due to movement toward higher value products. A back-of-the-envelope calculation results in an implied annual quota rental rate on the order of ~15-19% of ex-vessel prices.

There is a direct correlation between successful metamorphosis from larvae to post-larvae and the quality of the resultant juveniles or fry. Juvenile quality, in turn, is a major factor influencing fish production level and market price. However, following the profound morphological and physiological changes occurring during metamorphosis, the emerging juveniles in some species characteristically demonstrate heterotrophic growth, poor pigmentation, cannibalism and generally poor survival. The white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus) in Israel and the Pacific threadfin (Polydactylussexfilis) in Hawaii are two promising candidates for mariculture that have high market value but a natural fishery that has sharply declined in recent years. Unfortunately, their potential for culture is severely hampered by variable metamorphic success limiting their production. The main objective was to compare the efficacy and economic viability of dietary or environmental iodine on metamorphic success and juvenile quality in the white grouper and the pink snapper which would lead to improved commercial rearing protocols and increased production of these species both in Israel and the US. The Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology encountered problems with the availability of pink snapper brood stock and larvae and changed to Pacific threadfin or moi which is rapidly becoming a premier aquaculture species in Hawaii and throughout the Indo-Pacific. The white grouper brood stock at the National Center for Mariculture was lost as a result of a viral outbreak following the sudden breakdown of the ozone purification system. In addition, the NCM suffered a devastating fire in the fall of 2007 that completely destroyed the hatchery and laboratory facilities although the BARD project samples were saved. Nevertheless, by studying alternate species a number of valuable findings and conclusions that can contribute to improved metamorphosis in commercially valuable marine species resulted from this collaborative effort. The Israeli group found that exposing white grouper larvae to external TH levels synchronized and increased the rate of metamorphosis. This suggested that sub-optimal synthesis of TH may be a major factor causing size heterogeneity in the larval population and high mortality through cannibalism by their larger more metamorphosed cohorts. Two protocols were developed to enrich the larvae with higher levels of the TH precursor, iodine; feeding iodine enriched Artemia or increasing the level of seawater iodine the larvae are exposed to. Results of accumulated iodine in gilthead seabream larvae indicated that the absorption of iodine from the water is markedly more efficient than feeding iodine enriched Artemia nauplii. Samples for TH, which will be analyzed shortly, will be able to determine if another dietary factor is lacking to effectively utilize surplus tissue iodine for TH synthesis. Moreover, these samples will also clarify which approach to enriching larvae with iodine, through the live food or exposure to iodine enriched seawater is the most efficient and cost effective. The American group found that moi larvae reared in ocean water, which possessed substantially higher iodine levels than those found in seawater well water, grew significantly larger, and showed increased survival compared with well water reared larvae. Larvae reared in ocean water also progressed more rapidly through developmental stages than those in low-iodine well seawater. In collaboration with Israeli counterparts, a highly specific and precise radioimmunoassay procedure for thyroid hormones and cortisol was developed. Taken altogether, the combined Hawaiian and Israeli collaborative research suggests that for teleost species of commercial value, adequate levels of environmental iodine are more determinate in metamorphosis than iodine levels in the live zooplankton food provided to the larvae. Insuring sufficiently high enough iodine in the ambient seawater offers a much more economical solution to improved metamorphosis than enriching the live food with costly liposomes incorporating iodine rich oils.

Porphyra species (commonly known as ‘nori’ or ‘purple laver’) are edible red seaweeds rich in proteins, vitamins and other highly valued biogenic compounds. For years Porphyra has been cultured using seeded nets extended in the open sea, and its biomass consumed primarily in the Far East. While demands for international markets have increased steadily at an average of 20% per year, supplies are on the verge and not expected to meet future demands. Alternatively, land-based cultivation of seaweed has become attractive in the mariculture industry since (1) important growth parameters can be controlled, (2) is environmentally friendly and (3) perfectly matches with integrated aquaculture leading to sustainable, high quality products. During the last few years a tank cultivation technology for Porphyra has been developed at the Israeli institution. This technology is based on indoor production of asexual spores and their subsequent growth to 1-2 mm seedlings. The seedlings are then transferred to outdoor tanks and ponds when seawater temperatures drop to 20 °C, or below, and days become shorter during winter time. However, the current technology efficiently serves only about 100 m2 of ponds during one growth season. In order to produce seedlings in sufficient amounts, it is critical to address both technical and biological aspects of seedling production, securing optimal up-scale to commercial-size cultivation farms. We hypothesize that massive production of spores is related to thalli origin, thalli age and sporulation triggers, and that seedling survival and their subsequent growth potential is determined by the seawater quality and overall indoor growth conditions imposed. A series of bio-reactors were constructed and tested in which spore release and spore growth were separately studied. The main assessment criteria for optimal viability of the seedlings will be by determining their electron transport rate using PAM fluorometry and by subsequent growth and biomass yields in outdoor ponds. Altogether the project showed (1), controlled sporulation is possible in big outdoor/growth chamber settings provided initial stock material (small frozen seedlings) is at hand, (2), contamination problems can be almost completely avoided if stock material is properly handled (clean as possible and partially dehydrated prior to freezing), (3), spore release can significantly be enhance using high nutrient levels during thawing for P. yezoensis and P. haitanensis, but not for P. rosengurttii, (4), PAM fluorometry is an efficient tool to estimate growth capacity in both seedlings and juvenile thalli. The BARD funding also served to explore other aspects of Porphyra biology and cultivation. For example, the taxonomical status of Porphyra strains used in this study was defined (see appendix), and the potential use of this seaweed in bioremediation was well substantiated. In addition, BARD funding supported a number of opportunities and activities in the Israeli lab, direct or indirectly related to the initial objectives of the project such as: additional molecular work in other seaweeds, description of at least 2 new species for the Israeli Mediterranean, and continuous support for the writing of a book on Global Change and applied aspects of seaweeds. The technology for Porphyra cultivation in land-based ponds is readily available. This study corroborated previous know-how of Porphyra growth in tanks and ponds, and yet offers important improvements regarding seedling production and their handling for successful cultivation. This study supported various other activities opening additional important issues in the biology/cultivation/use of Porphyra and other seaweeds.

Key Enabled Technologies(KETs) have the potential to impact on many aspects of society, whilst transforming European industrial competitiveness at the local, national, and global scales. Studies funded by the European Commission have shown that European advances in six technology areas would not only enhance the leadership and competitiveness of European business, but also drive advances across Europe’s business sectors and society. Despite their applicability across sectors, KETs represent a change, and a new manner of moving forward. Business and society view change both positively, welcoming advances in technology and new tools and products to make life somewhat easier for citizens, and negatively, recognising that with change comes risk and a reticence to change. Like society, different industrial sectors will view innovation and new technology differently. As such, each sector requires a slightly different approach to energise KET uptake into their daily operations and lives. Recognition of this reality underpinned the development of this roadmap. Stakeholders have been engaged across the Atlantic Area, through the use of online surveying, face-to-face workshops, and one-to-one interviews conducted virtually. This has enabled the authors to develop an awareness of the maritime scene and community which offers such opportunities and potential for KETs. It also provided insights into the reality of energising this uptake when framed in the context of social, financial and governance realities. Over the course of the project, the team conducted an analysis of the maritime sector, to identify and map out any KET applications that were in development. In parallel, a diverse pool of academic and commercial stakeholders identified the opportunities they could see for KET applications in the maritime sector. They also identified factors which restrict uptake, and restrain viable trans- disciplinary innovations from effectively making it to market. Stakeholder perspectives were combined with the investigative findings to develop a vision for a KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. The barriers and challenges shaped a range of proposed actions, which target different facets of the innovation ecosystem to ease growth and shape development. These actors were iteratively reviewed by stakeholders, and amended accordingly. These actions form the basis of this roadmap, a proposed path towards realising a vibrant growing KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. It contains a suite of 60 inter-linked, systemic actions, framed within 35 action areas to achieve 9 core goals, spread across 5 thematic agendas (policy, funding, building a sustainable innovation ecosystem, capacity building, and awareness raising). This envisioned KET-maritime innovation ecosystem fosters application-led innovation, and advances societal and market benefits for all. Each of the 5 thematic agendas are summarised as a policy brief, provided in the Appendices. The actions applicable to each policy brief are detailed in this report, alongside a proposed timeframe for implementation. Each action is codified, and can be traced through the iterative review process using the provenance table supplied. The potential for KET applications across the Blue Economy is extensive, and all sectors offer at least some opportunities for KETs. Within this landscape, the following sectors are identified as having strong growth potential where KET’s can help to drive that growth: Fisheries and aquaculture; Blue biotechnology; Maritime surveillance; Marine renewable energy; Ship and boat building. Within these sectors, four specific KET-maritime applications research priorities are highlighted: Advanced materials application in marine renewable energy; Photonics application in maritime surveillance; Micro- and nano-electronics in maritime surveillance; Advanced manufacturing techniques in ship and boat building. Finally, the project team would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who participated in the workshops, interviews, and review activities which culminated in this roadmap.

Culturing of animal cells was developed in the late 19th and early 20th century, when researchers worked out how to support the growth of cells in media in an ex-vivo environment(footnote). The technology has been used commercially in the medical products industry, notably to produce antibodies for use as new medicines and as reagents in diagnostics. Animal cell culturing has expanded into the food industry especially due to its benefit in promoting sustainability for example by freeing up global arable land used for livestock farming, with cultured meat predicted to enter the UK market in the coming year(s) and already on the market in Singapore. With this in sight, a systematic search protocol was devised to identify hazardous concerns that will help inform the risk assessment for any future applications for authorisation to the FSA. To note, the term ‘cultured’ is now referred to as ‘cultivated’ but the report uses the former term to keep in line with the search string used for the research. This report was limited to meat products manufactured from cultured animal cells. Even though majority of these hazards cross-over to other products such as fish, there is potential to evaluate hazards associated with fish/seafood products separately in the near future. This hazard identification considers the nature of potential hazards associated with the production of cultured animal cells; a novel technology that uses animal cells and cell culturing to produce a substance that resembles meat thus avoiding animal rearing for meat products or aquaculture. As cultured animal cells may pose new risks this report aims to ‘scope out’ the technology to gain an understanding of it and to identify the potential risks that this may pose

Analyzing the importance of Thailand’s blue economy, this report considers ways to mobilize and scale up private sector investment in areas such as aquaculture and marine renewable energy to help bolster sustainable blue development. It explains why factors such as limited awareness of ocean economy opportunities, a lack of investment-ready at-scale projects, and insufficient monitoring are proving a barrier to investors. The report shows how creating an enabling environment and developing products such as sustainability-linked loans and technical assistance grants could help drive investment flows to the sector and safeguard Thailand’s blue economic growth.
