Résumé :
The narrative story has evolved from its precursor, when the old myths are shattered, in which the new novel has become a text with numerous cultural formats within its contents. Fragmentation and separation have been two of the most significant aspects of modern creative writing. In order to grasp the evolving reality, novelists must assume new creative forms in which the reader joins the realms of secrecy and marginalization. Those looking for the positions of the novelist critics will notice that contemporary writing has occupied a distinguished position due to the issues it raises regarding humanity and the homeland and pushing its readers to become conscious and understand what is lacking. The issues of the homeland have become thorny issues due to the imagination of the novelist and his intellectuality. It became more and more evident. The novel, with its transformation and development in content and structure, has become an autonomous literary genre that hides complex topics beyond the words. Its reader must search for distinct critical mechanisms to read it and decode its words. Hence, contemporary novelists did not write fictional texts arbitrarily. But, behind every text there was a significance and a human issue affecting the community whose conditions deteriorated socially and politically. From the above, we will try, in this research paper, to dig into the depth of the issue and reveal the features of the contemporary fictional text and its marginalization. Perhaps the most important question is: Did contemporary creative writing really contribute to educating societies? And revealed the issues that are absent and marginalized? Will the continuation of this type of writing change and solve the nation's crises? In order to answer these questions, we have to research contemporary creative writing and dive into the most important cultural, social, political and even ideological systems.

Résumé :
The formulation of the topic fact and fiction in auto-confession is a result of earlier research in which the greatest theoretical confrontation takes place in the area of autobiographical prose. This paper investigates and explores issues with which contemporary poetics is faced regarding the concepts in question, especially when they coexist within a work concerned either with genre codification or with undefined status (i.e. hybrid genre). Such discussions are often accompanied by great dilemmas on whether auto-confessional texts such as autobiography or autobiographical prose should be considered fact or fiction. Being a fierce confrontation, especially for a genre that is considered a compromising genre in which the facts are weaved according to the fictional practice, this paper proposes that a double reading (fact-fiction) will highlight issues that are essential to interpret and decode a text of autoconfessional premises and, beyond that, a codification of the genre when dilemmas grow and become even larger: in fiction, nonfiction, novel, autobiographical novel, autobiography, etc. Received: 27 January 2021 / Accepted: 2 September 2021 / Published: 5 November 2021

Résumé :
Mulk Raj Anand was a revolutionary writer of the twentieth century India who changed the mode of writing and thinking in the field of Indian fiction writing. The novelists before him, who had written fiction, wrote the fictional side of life which were ideal and romantic in nature. There were a smaller number of issues of the society. Mulk Raj Anand’s writing brought revolutionary change in the field of fiction writing. He wrote the novels for the sake of untouchables and the poor. He raised the issues of casteism, capitalism, feudalism, colonialism and imperialism through his novels. In Untouchable, he has attacked one of the worst social evils of the Indian society which was ignored by the previous writers and that is blot on Indian society, culture and tradition that has colonized eighty five percent people of Indian society. This sensibility has ruined creativity of Indian people. Casteism and untouchability are the blots on the face of humanity. Anand seems fighting for the liberty, equality and justice of the untouchables and the poor. He appealed for the basic human rights and needs in the newly emerging civil structure of colonial and post-independence India. He had the opinion among all the fundamental rights that human dignity is the highest. Bakha, the leading character, had the resistance in the mind but he could not express it due to the fear of his caste. Bakha is a metaphor for all the untouchables of India.

Résumé :
Contemporary African women's fiction has been a significant site of exploration for issues of gender and its intersections with other identity markers such as race, class, and sexuality. This paper provides an overview of the gender issues present in contemporary African women's fiction and analyzes how these authors are engaging with feminist thoughts and theories in their works. The paper begins by exploring the patriarchal nature of African societies and how this has been challenged by African women writers through their portrayal of female characters who resist societal norms and expectations. The paper then analyzes the various forms of oppression that African women face, including sexual violence, female genital mutilation, and forced marriages. Additionally, the paper considers the role of African women in politics and how they are represented in literature. The paper argues that contemporary African women writers are challenging Western feminist thoughts and developing forms of feminist theory that are more inclusive and relevant to African contexts. The study concludes that African women's fiction is an important site of feminist discourse and offers valuable insights into the gender issues that affect African women today.

Résumé :
Abstract Modern Korean newspapers played a decisive role in transforming the Korean fiction genre in the early twentieth century―a transformation that was carried out in two distinctively different cultural and political environments. In the 1900s, reform-minded Korean intellectuals translated and authored fictional works in newspapers primarily as a way to instigate Koreans to participate in the nation-building process during the Patriotic Enlightenment movement (Aeguk kyemong undong) period. When Japan annexed Korea in 1910, the Daily News (Maeil sinbo) continually used fiction as a vehicle to deliver the colonial government’s assimilation policy, that is, to raise Korea’s socioeconomic and cultural status, with the aim of civilizing the society. The rhetoric of civilization is a common feature in fictional works produced during the period. However, what characterized the works serialized in Maeil sinbo was their increasing focus on individual desire and domestic affairs, which manifested itself in the form of courtship and familial conflicts. The confrontation between private desire and family relationships in these fictional works represented the prospect of higher education and economic equity while invoking emotional responses to the contradictory social reality of colonial assimilation in the portrayal of domestic issues in fiction. Looking at Maeil sinbo and its serialization of fiction not as a fixed totality of the Japanese imperial force but as a discursive space where contradicting views on civilization were formed, this paper scrutinizes emotional renderings of individuality and domesticity reflected in Maeil sinbo’s serialized fiction in the early 1910s.

Résumé :
Take that woman explores social issues as a piece of mainstream fiction. The story revolves around realistic characters, in a contemporary setting, facing situations which many people encounter in their lives. The piece isn't didactic. Nor does it force-feed the reader; rather it provides information in bite-sized pieces so it can be easily digested. Take that woman is the story of a group of people brought together by a wedding. Set in the present, the action takes place in Canberra on a day in early November. The story moves between Australia and England, between the present and the past as it examines the conflicts the day generates for the couple's families and friends. Not only does the wedding serve as a device to bring the characters together, it also highlights the seriousness of the issues being explored. The account is a fictional piece as fiction can be an effective communication tool. Information is disseminated in different forms through a variety of media, both electronic and print. But, however widely, or creatively, the material is distributed, there is nothing to ensure the recipient will read or understand the information. Mainstream fiction can be a means of raising awareness about serious social issues, of changing attitudes, and, ultimately, behaviours. The research for the piece involved a search of literature, films and videos, and relevant websites. It also consisted of personal interviews with subject experts, workers in the field of domestic violence, and people who have been exposed to violence in their own relationships.

Résumé :
This thesis examines the ways in which exile, both actual and metaphorical, informs the work of four path breaking female writers from South Africa and the American South: Carson McCullers, Bessie Head, Zoë Wicomb and Dorothy Allison. In this study, exilic consciousness is closely linked to postcolonial, nomadic feminisms which can best be understood as liminal, as fundamentally ‘out of place’. The border-crossings involved here are not only geographical, they also signify a change in critical consciousness, as the foundational texts of this thesis – Rosi Braidotti’s Nomadic Feminism and Francoise Lionnet and Shu-Mei Shih’s Minor Transnationalism – indicate. By exploring writers who problematise the categories of race, gender, sexuality and class I demonstrate how these writers offer new ways of reading the postcolonial condition as nomadic, and I examine the shared processes that nations and individuals undergo as they experience political and personal liberation struggles. My thesis is divided into four main parts. The opening section offers both an introduction to, and rationale for, the study, providing historical and sociocultural contextualisation linking South Africa and the American South; it goes on to establish my choices of Carson McCullers and Dorothy Allison as the southern US writers in this study and Bessie Head and Zoë Wicomb as the South Africans. In the opening chapter I interrogate self-representation and variations in autobiography by the four writers. Chapter 2 has as its focus body and exilic consciousness in selected work by all four writers. My final chapter examines identity formation as situated subjectivity in the work of Allison and Wicomb who are foregrounded here. I contend that transnationalism need not be seen as inevitably homogenising; rather, I show that minority individuals and groups can establish agency through transversal, lateral networks.

Opperman, Susan. « Ethical and stylistic issues of translating Bosman's English short stories into Afrikaans ». Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24546.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Text in English with abstracts in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa
Herman Charles Bosman (1905–1951) remains a popular South African writer, despite the frequent occurrence of the offensive k-word for black people in his writings. Although the discipline of Translation Studies is presently dominated by ethical considerations, there are reasons to believe that ethical issues have been neglected in recent translations of Bosman’s English short stories into Afrikaans. His translators, Griebenow and De Lange, have conformed to a simplistic fidelity-driven perception of ethics, while more attention should have been paid to “sensitive” aspects of the original. The research problem is how this gap that exists in translation practice can be addressed, which in turn raises the question: How would one translate Bosman’s stories in an ethically responsible manner for the twenty-first century? This study not does deal with all of Bosman’s short stories but focuses on the Oom Schalk Lourens ones as these demonstrate the research problem best. Thus, the data consist of existing texts in printed form. The following stories have been selected for comparative analysis: “Makapan’s Caves”, “The Rooinek”, “The Gramophone”, “Mafeking Road”, “Splendours from Ramoutsa”, “Unto Dust”, and “Funeral Earth”. Since excerpts from the original and their corresponding translations are compared, translator style is inevitably included in the discussion. A committed approach, which considers translation as an activist and interventionist cultural activity (Brownlie 2011), forms the analytical framework of this study. The analyses indicate that Griebenow and De Lange have retained the offensive racial epithets of the source texts, rather than toning them down for modern target-text readers. Thus, the translators have been faithful to a dead author, instead of taking the socio-cultural and political context of reception into consideration. From a committed stance, I would strongly recommend that derogatory racial epithets, found in older texts, should be subdued in current translations. Otherwise, it may be better not to translate at all, as Pym (2012) suggests. Owing to translators’ responsibility for the effects of their translations on their readers, and South Africa’s political transformation to a democracy in which all people are deemed equal before the law, the use of racist language, is totally unwarranted.
Die volgende verhale is vir vergelykende ontleding gekies: “Makapan’s Caves”, “The Rooinek”, “The Gramophone”, “Mafeking Road”, “Splendours from Ramoutsa”, “Unto Dust”, en “Funeral Earth”.
UHerman Charles Bosman (1905-1951) ngomnye wababhali abaphume izandla baseMzantsi Afrika, nangona iincwadi zakhe zizele ligama elingamkelekanga eliqala ngo-k elibhekiselele kubantu abantsundu. Nangona Izifundo Zoguqulo zikuthathela ingqalelo ukunanzwa kweenqobo ezisesikweni xa kuguqulelwa, kukho izizathu ezibangela ukuba kukholeleke ukuba imiba engeenqobo ezisesikweni iye yatyeshelwa xa bekuguqulelwa kwiAfrikaans amabali amafutshane kaBosman abhalwe ngesiNgesi. UGriebenow noDe Lange abangabaguquli bathande ukulandela uluvo olubonisa intembeko kumbhali, endaweni yokugxila kwimiba “enobuethe-ethe” ekwisicatshulwa sentsusa. Injongo yolu phando kukufumana indlela esinokuvalwa ngayo esi sikhewu kwimisebenzi yoguqulelo, nto leyo ebangela ukuba kubekho imibuzo ethi: Umntu angawaguqula njani amabali amafutshane kaBosman kwinkulungwane yamashumi amabini ananye apho umguquli azithathela ingqalelo iinqobo ezisesikweni. Olu phando aluwahlautyi onke amabali amafutshane kaBosman, koko lugxila kuphela kula ka-Oom Schalk Lourens kuba ingawo ayivelisa kakuhle le ngxaki/njongo yophando. Izicatshulwa ezihlalutywayo zezishicilelweyo kuphela. Amabali akhethelwe ukuthelekiswa nokuhlalutywa ngala: “Makapan’s Caves”, “The Rooinek”, “The Gramophone”, “Mafeking Road”, “Splendours from Ramoutsa”, “Unto Dust”, and “Funeral Earth”. Njengoko kuthelekiswa iziqendwana ezikula mabalana neenguqulelo zawo, isimbo sokubhala sabaguquli siyaqukwa kolu hlalutyo. Isakhelo sohlalutyo esisetyenzisiweyo kolu phando seso sisekelwe kwiingcamango zikaBrownlie (2011) ezihlela uguqulelo njengesenzo senkcubeko sokuphembelela nokungenelela. Uhlalutyo lubonisa ukuba uGriebenow noDe Lange bawagcinile amagama ocalucalulo ngokobuhlanga anyelisayo asetyenziswe kwizicatshulwa zentsusa, endaweni yokuwatshintsha ngelokulungiselela abafundi ekujoliswe kubo beli xesha. Abaguquli ke ngoko baye bathembeka kakhulu kumbhali owaswelekayo endaweni yokuthathela ingqalelo imeko yokwamkelekileyo ngokwezopolitiko nentlalo. Ndiphakamisa ukuba amagama anyelisayo ocalucalulo ngokobuhlanga asetyenziswe kwiimbalo zakudala athonyalaliswe okanye atshintshwe kwiinguqulelo zangoku. Kungenjalo, kungcono kungenziwa nguqulelo kwaphela njengoko ecebisa uPym (2012). Ngenxa yoxanduva olusemagxeni abaguquli ngeziphumo zeenguqulelo zabo kubafundi bazo, nokutshintsha kwemeko yezopolitiko yoMzantsi Afrika itshintshela kwidemokhrasi apho abantu balinganayo ngokomthetho, ukusetyenziswa kolwimi olucalulayo akwamkelekanga.

Résumé :
AbstractThe success of Kate Atkinson’s crime fiction series (starting with Case Histories, 2004, and continuing with Big Sky, 2019) brought Jackson Brodie to the TV under the title Case Histories, commissioned by the BBC for one season (airing in 2011), and a second season (in 2013, slightly changing in format). Throughout the fiction series, Brodie has been constructed as a vulnerable subject, continuing a tradition of the second half of the twentieth century that broke up with the hard-boiled image of the male detective. The question under scrutiny here is how the fiction character has been modelled to construct its television counterpart for a transnational audience. Taking into consideration issues of vulnerability, accountability and its humane social formulation, this analysis will show how the changes needed for the TV seems to erase whatever social critique appears in the fiction series.

Résumé :
AbstractIn times characterized by pervasive future narratives—technological utopianism, dystopian annihilation, neoliberal “progress”—and simultaneous, all-consuming eco-anxiety, how the future is addressed in schools is critically important as we navigate our complex relationship with the “Anthropocene” in education. In this chapter, we problematize restrictive curricular and pedagogical visions of possibility and, as an alternative, position science fiction and speculative storytelling as genres that offer pedagogical frameworks through which educators may center collective, speculative, complex narratives of the future that open up—instead of foreclose upon—possible paths forward and ways of engaging with the present. Grounded in genre studies, futures studies, and science and technology studies, as well as in speculative world building work conducted with secondary students, this chapter accordingly outlines the contours of speculative pedagogy. Speculative pedagogy is framed in this chapter as an approach that embraces and explores collective, open futures; centers interdisciplinarity as a central means through which we can come to envision complex future possibilities with students; prioritizes dismantling singular narratives of possibility and the future; and mobilizes science fictional and speculative storytelling modes to grapple with uncertainty and resist mastery as educators examine critical social, technological, scientific, and existential issues alongside their students.

Résumé :
AbstractKaren Lord’s speculative folktale Redemption in Indigo (2010) engages the other-wordly or un-worldly to explore Caribbean social justice issues such as race, gender, and class inequality. Demonstrating her trickster powers, Lord merges folk gods and hero(ines) from different African traditions, for example Akan, Ashanti, Xhosa, and Karamba, with those found in Caribbean cultures. This syncretic textual strategy not only emphasizes the subversive, liminal qualities of both Ananse, the African-Caribbean folk figure, and Anansesem in challenging colonial metanarratives of time and space that have erased, denigrated, or falsely represented the African-Caribbean woman but also critiques masculinist versions of Ananse and traditionally male-dominated Anansesem. By contrast, Lord’s antipatriarchal, anticolonial account foregrounds Ananse’s feminine qualities and empowered female figures: the nonbinary storyteller, the heroine Paama, and the goddess Atabey. In doing so, Lord offers a new futuristic, feminocentric Ananse story whose weblike concentric patterns interweave the African past with the Caribbean present, the ancestral homeland with the diaspora.

Résumé :
From a comparison of the surreal worlds of Pu Songling and Mo Yan in their respective auctorial context, this paper argues that although Pu Songling’s short stories integrate surreal elements, contrary to the accepted typology of genres, they fall into realistic and not speculative fiction because the worldview of Imperial China in which he lived not only accepted the supernatural as real, but as foundational to the traditional order. By comparison, Mo Yan’s supernatural stories partly fall within supernatural literature, because post-1949 China espoused a scientific worldview which banishes the supernatural. On a second level, however, both Pu Songling’s and Mo Yan’s surreal fictions are political satires of their times. Yet, even on this point they diverge. While Pu Songling articulates the social and political criticism of his present to surreal elements, Mo Yan casts the surreal as a stand-in for the exceptional situations of his recent past which are the object of his criticisms.

Résumé :
Translated fiction has had a special place in the Latvian book publishing since its beginnings in the 16th century. It has not changed even in the 21st century. High-quality translation and publishing of fiction is still unthinkable without enterprising and responsible publishers, which attract highly qualified translators. However, due to the Internet and social media, in the 21st century in Latvia the translators themselves more and more frequently gain recognition in the public sphere. Without the mediation of publishing houses, translators communicate with readers both on the Internet and at various events, – these communications frequently include the issues related to translation (translation quality, new words in translations, training of new translators, etc.). In other words, translators are playing an increasingly prominent role in the book publishing cycle. The research revealed an abundant range of activities related to translators and translation, confirming the important role thereof not only in the book publishing, but also in Latvian cultural life.

Résumé :
There are currently only a few houses who use social media. But with the increasing availability of inexpensive hardware, and prolific networked software, the number of houses who actively communicate online in one way or another is sure to grow. An examination of some tweeting house types from within the context of architecture history and theory reveals some models for how this social architecture might develop. This paper shows that tweeting houses raise concerns that are solidly within the set of questions traditionally addressed by architecture. The tweeting house’s existence depends on acts of translation between different media, some managed by a designer, some automated. The tweeting house actively presents social and tectonic affordances that offer opportunities for engagement, functional and otherwise. And finally, tweeting houses raise issues about the public, external representation of a set of private, internal conditions, some of them personal to the house’s occupants, some of them intended for broader reading. This paper will use examples from the history of architecture, adjacent design disciplines, computer science, science fiction, and hybrid example projects that partake of all of these fields, to show that while the house with a social media account is a unique and new techno-architectural possibility, it is not without history or precedent.

Résumé :
Images play a central role in contemporary culture, and it is crucial that architects understand, control, and engineer their political forces.¹ From hyper-real simulations to machine vision, the structure and way that images are mobilized is changing. Photorealistic techniques and data-driven ones are entrusted as “objective” image types, often deployed to represent reality, truth, or facts, when in actuality, they can be used to call those into question through critical narratives. This paper investigates the potential of images to cultivate conversations about emerging technology’s implications in architecture. A pedagogical case study is put forward that frames critical, image-based narratives used in the examination of social, political, economic, or ecological issues within an urban territory. Each project addresses how the territory might interface with a selected emerging technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous vehicles (AVs), drones, automation, and augmented reality (AR). “Objective” image types are examined—both historical ones like construction documents, patent drawings, and diagrams, and contemporary ones like satellite imaging, video games, LiDAR, and photogrammetry—to foreground the following questions. How does architecture, a field tasked with confronting the “real,” contend with the complex overlap of virtual and physical realms? How might our projections of future “realities” take on political positions rather than respond to the desires of capital?

Résumé :
The article presents the results of a study of Soviet science fiction stories of the 1950s-1970s in the aspect of N.D. Tamarchenko’s genre theory. The analysis methodology presented in the researcher’s works on the structure of the story is used. The genre of the story is considered in three aspects: chronotope and plot scheme; compositional and speech organization of the work; the nature of the relationship between the reality of the author and reader and the world of the character, including the problem of evaluation. Similar features of fantastic and non-fantastic stories are revealed, and the transformation of the genre structure is described: the increasing role of the socio-historical context, the limited type of narrator and the associated impossibility of a direct and unambiguous assessment of the character and his actions; the absence of a parallel version of the plot. The reasons for the transformation are formulated: the role of the plot situation of the experiment, including the event of humanity’s meeting with inhuman mind. The role of A. and B. Strugatsky in the development of Soviet science fiction stories of this period is noted.

Yıldız, Murat. « Ethical Value Issues in Corporate Sustainability Reports ». Dans 3rd International Congress on Engineering and Life Science. Prensip Publishing, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.61326/icelis.2023.55.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study aims to reveal the current ethical issues raised by corporate sustainability reports. Many texts such as the Paris Agreement, the European Green Deal, carbon regulations at the border, which have started to play a very important role in the economic and social pattern of the world, have been affecting daily lives of individuals across the countries. Beyond migrations, droughts and natural disasters, the armless war of the new millennium is a struggle for the civilization forced by these agreements. In addition to the European Union, which is gradually increasing its pressure on both member countries and suppliers within the framework of climate scenarios with the directives it has issued on impact value and due diligence, the USA is also making its own regulations binding for everyone. In addition to the scenarios of combating climate change, these two main economic powers also need different fictions that can sustain the social and economic comfort within their borders. In particular, the exponential growth of migration will be accompanied by the danger of disrupting the structure of the global economy, production, and the distribution of labor. While the EU considers the reporting of the companies in the member states to be inadequate in terms of quality and quantity, the companies that make a significant part of their trade to the member countries need a much more long-term and patient endeavor. Although the translations of the regulations consisting of numerous articles are often not easily comprehended in different cultures, it is a fact that ethics-based efforts will make this process permanent and understandable. In this context, sustainability studies and reporting of corporate firms, which are the core structures, have been analyzed in a way to include the supply chain. Many of the reports examined reveal the existence of knowledge and experience gaps that will lead to social and ecological problems as well as low impact value. The study brings an applied ethical suggestion to the ethical value analyses of the existing approaches and tries to reveal to what extent all these global efforts, the core subject of which is ethics, can overlap with ethical behavior.

Résumé :
In this paper we present our ongoing research where we are attempting to integrate sustainable development issues into a megagame designed to teach cybersecurity. There are several serious games that have been developed to teach and inform individuals about sustainability issues but none that deal specifically with both cybersecurity and sustainability issues. A Megagame is a multiplayer game with between 30-40 players who play in teams of 3-5 players that take on specific roles in dealing with complex problems that cover subject matters ranging from science fiction and heroic fantasy to political, economic, historical, and even cyber conflicts. We have built and tested a megagame entitled CS -Technopoly using the socio-technical framework of sustainability proposed by Geels and integrated it further with the Security by Consensus Model proposed by Kowalski. The intended learning objectives of the game, such as teaching adversarial and sustainable systems thinking by exposing the students to cyber threat intelligence reports and cyber security investments decision making, were tested by performing semi-structured interviews of a stratified sample of the participants. Preliminary results from 11 interviews from the two first trials of CS Technopoly indicate that the participating security experts found that C.S. Technopoly would be a useful tool for team building and improving collaboration between security departments and upper strategic management
