Résumé :
Four reaction types were used with the aim of obtaining new cage compounds of composition Fex(CO)y(PR)z- with R = Me, Ph, Tol: oxidation of the compounds Fe2(CO)6(PHR)2, photolysis thereof, reaction between RPCF and Fe2(CO)82- . and reaction between P-Cl containing iron complexes and Fe(CO)42_. Besides several known products, e.g. Fe3(CO)9(PR)2 or Fe4(CO)11(PR)2, and derivatives of the Fe2(CO)6(PRX)2 butterfly type complexes, the new octabisvalene shaped compounds Fe4(CO)2(PR)4 with R = Me, Ph, Tol were obtained and confirmed by a crystal structure analysis for R = Me, Side products of the oxidative conversions were Fe4(CO)12(P2Me2)(MeP-C2H4-PMe) and Fe4(CO)12(P2Tol2)(PHTol)2 which can be derived from the octabisvalene type. Side products of the irradiative conversions were Fe3(CO)8(PPh)(PHPh)2 and (CO)3Fe(μ-PHPh)2Fe(CO)(C6H8). the structure of the latter being proved crystallographically.

Résumé :
The bond-valence method has been used for valence calculations of FeMo/V cofactors in FeMo/V proteins using 51 crystallographic data sets of FeMo/V proteins from the Protein Data Bank. The calculations show molybdenum(III) to be present in MoFe7S9C(Cys)(HHis)[R-(H)homocit] (where H4homocit is homocitric acid, HCys is cysteine and HHis is histidine) in FeMo cofactors, while vanadium(III) with a more reduced iron complement is obtained for FeV cofactors. Using an error analysis of the calculated valences, it was found that in FeMo cofactors Fe1, Fe6 and Fe7 can be unambiguously assigned as iron(III), while Fe2, Fe3, Fe4 and Fe5 show different degrees of mixed valences for the individual Fe atoms. For the FeV cofactors in PDB entry 5n6y, Fe4, Fe5 and Fe6 correspond to iron(II), iron(II) and iron(III), respectively, while Fe1, Fe2, Fe3 and Fe7 exhibit strongly mixed valences. Special situations such as CO-bound and selenium-substituted FeMo cofactors and O(N)H-bridged FeV cofactors are also discussed and suggest rearrangement of the electron configuration on the substitution of the bridging S atoms.

Résumé :
Abstract Fluoride is everywhere in the environment, yet it is toxic to living things. How biological organisms detoxify fluoride has been unknown until recently. Fluoride-specific ion transporters in both prokaryotes (Fluoride channel; Fluc) and fungi (Fluoride Exporter; FEX) efficiently export fluoride to the extracellular environment. FEX homologs have been identified throughout the plant kingdom. Understanding the function of FEX in a multicellular organism will reveal valuable knowledge about reducing toxic effects caused by fluoride. Here, we demonstrate the conserved role of plant FEX (FLUORIDE EXPORTER) in conferring fluoride tolerance. Plant FEX facilitates the efflux of toxic fluoride ions from yeast cells and is required for fluoride tolerance in plants. A CRISPR/Cas9-generated mutation in Arabidopsis thaliana FEX renders the plant vulnerable to low concentrations (100-µM) of fluoride at every stage of development. Pollen is particularly affected, failing to develop even at extremely low levels of fluoride in the growth medium. The action of the FEX membrane transport protein is the major fluoride defense mechanism in plants.

Résumé :
A simple, precise, specific, and accurate high-performance thin-layer chromatographic method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of fexofenadine hydrochloride (FEX) and montelukast sodium (MTKT) in pharmaceutical dosage form. The separation was carried out on Merck HPTLC aluminum plates of silica gel G60 F254, ( cm) with 250 μm thickness using toluene: ethyl acetate: methanol: ammonia (30%) (0.5: 7: 2: 0.5, v/v/v/v) as mobile phase. HPTLC separation of the two drugs followed by densitometric measurement was carried out in the absorbance mode at 220 nm. The drugs were resolved satisfactorily with values of and for FEX and MTKT, respectively. The linear regression analysis data for the calibration plots showed good linear relationship with and 0.9998 for FEX and MTKT, respectively, in the concentration range of 2400–10800 ng spot−1 for FEX and 200–900 ng spot−1 for MTKT. The method was validated for precision, robustness, specificity, and accuracy. The limits of detection and quantitation were 100 and 300 ng spot−1, respectively, for FEX and 50 and 100 ng spot−1, respectively, for MTKT. The proposed developed HPTLC method can be applied for identification and quantitative determination of FEX and MTKT in bulk drug and drug formulation.

Résumé :
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT or ‘sleeping sickness’) is a neglected tropical disease. If untreated, it is always fatal and leads to death. A few treatments are available for HAT, but most of them require a skilled professional, which increases the financial burden on the patient. Recently, fexinidazole (FEX) has been approved by the European Medicine Agency (EMA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) as the first all-oral therapy for the treatment of stage-1 (hemolymphatic) as well as stage-2 (meningoencephalitic) of HAT. Before the FEX approval, there were separate treatments for stage-1 and stage-2 of HAT. This study reviews the discovery, development timeline, inventions, and patent literature of FEX. It was first approved by EMA and USFDA in 2018 and 2021, respectively. FEX was also added to the World Health Organization’s list of essential drugs in 2019. The patent literature search revealed many types of patents/patent applications (compound, salt, process, method of treatment, drug combinations, and compositions) related to FEX, which have been summarized in this article. The authors foresee a great scope to develop more inventions based on FEX (novel salts, polymorphs, drug conjugates, cyclodextrin complex, etc.) for the treatment of many protozoal diseases (Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease), inflammatory diseases, and other microbial infections. New combinations of FEX with other treatments of HAT may also provide fruitful results. This review might be useful to the scientists working on the HAT and other neglected diseases to develop novel inventions and innovations of therapeutic relevance.

Résumé :
AbstractA feature detection and extinction retrieval (FEX) algorithm for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program’s (ARM) Raman lidar (RL) has been developed. Presented here is Part I of the FEX algorithm: the detection of features including both clouds and aerosols. The approach of FEX is to use multiple quantities— scattering ratios derived using elastic and nitrogen channel signals from two fields of view, the scattering ratio derived using only the elastic channel, and the total volume depolarization ratio—to identify features using range-dependent detection thresholds. FEX is designed to be context sensitive with thresholds determined for each profile by calculating the expected clear-sky signal and noise. The use of multiple quantities provides complementary depictions of cloud and aerosol locations and allows for consistency checks to improve the accuracy of the feature mask. The depolarization ratio is shown to be particularly effective at detecting optically thin features containing nonspherical particles, such as cirrus clouds. Improvements over the existing ARM RL cloud mask are shown. The performance of FEX is validated against a collocated micropulse lidar and observations from the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellite over the ARM Darwin, Australia, site. While the focus is on a specific lidar system, the FEX framework presented here is suitable for other Raman or high spectral resolution lidars.

Résumé :
The zeolite's textural properties have a significant effect on zeolite's effectiveness in the different industrial processes. This research aimed to study the textual properties of the NaX and FeX zeolites using the nitrogen adsorption-desorption technique at a constant low temperature. According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the adsorption-desorption isotherm showed that the studied materials were mixed kinds I/II isotherms and H3 type hysteresis. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller isotherm was the best model to describe the nitrogen adsorption-desorption better than the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The obtained adsorption capacity and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area values for NaX were greater than FeX. According to the Kelvin equation, Barrett, Joyner, and Halenda model was used to determine pore size distribution, diameter, and average pore volume for the selected zeolites. The pore size distribution for NaX was wider than FeX zeolites, the pore diameter for NaX was less than FeX, and the average pore volume for FeX was greater than the value of NaX average pore volume. The comparative study was carried out with the previous studies, and the comparison showed that the textual properties of the modified zeolites agreed with other studies.

Résumé :
A comparative study of chemical stability of terfenadine (TER) and itsin vivometabolite fexofenadine (FEX) was performed. Both TER and FEX were subjected to high temperature at different pH and UV/VIS light at different pH and then quantitatively analyzed using new validated LC-UV methods. These methods were used to monitor the degradation processes and to determine the kinetics of degradation for both the compounds. As far as the effects of temperature and pH were concerned, FEX occurred more sensitive to degradation than TER. As far as the effects of UV/VIS light and pH were concerned, the both drugs were similarly sensitive to high doses of light. Using all stress conditions, the processes of degradation of TER and FEX followed the first-order kinetics. The results obtained for these two antihistaminic drugs could be helpful in developing their new derivatives with higher activity and stability at the same time.

Résumé :
Abstract In the present study, Fex/ZrO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 25) nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile modified Sol-Gel method. Stabilization of the tetragonal phase of ZrO2 is studied as a function of both the Fe incorporation ratios and thermal treatment. The Fe incorporation ratios are tested up to the extreme just before FeO and Fe2O3 phases are formed separately. The prepared Fex/ZrO2 nanoparticles XRD analysis depicts the formation of zirconium oxide at different Fe ratios in the nanoscale with an excellent degree of crystallinity in the tetragonal phase. The effect of thermal treatment on stabilizing the tetragonal phase of Fex/ZrO2 nanoparticles is extensively studied. The phase transition to the monoclinic phase is determined as function of Fe incorporation ratios and annealing temperatures. The optical absorbance spectra showed that the optical band gap decreased with increasing Fe ratios without the formation of doping bands which confirms the formation of Fex/ZrO2 single matrix.

Résumé :
Single nucleotide variants (SNVs) affecting the first nucleotide G of an exon (Fex-SNVs) identified in various diseases are mostly recognized as missense or nonsense variants. Their effect on pre-mRNA splicing has been seldom analyzed, and no curated database is available. We previously reported that Fex-SNVs affect splicing when the length of the polypyrimidine tract is short or degenerate. However, we cannot readily predict the splicing effects of Fex-SNVs. We here scrutinized the available literature and identified 106 splicing-affecting Fex-SNVs based on experimental evidence. We similarly identified 106 neutral Fex-SNVs in the dbSNP database with a global minor allele frequency (MAF) of more than 0.01 and less than 0.50. We extracted 115 features representing the strength of splicing cis-elements and developed machine-learning models with support vector machine, random forest, and gradient boosting to discriminate splicing-affecting and neutral Fex-SNVs. Gradient boosting-based LightGBM outperformed the other two models, and the length and nucleotide compositions of the polypyrimidine tract played critical roles in the discrimination. Recursive feature elimination showed that the LightGBM model using 15 features achieved the best performance with an accuracy of 0.80 ± 0.12 (mean and SD), a Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) of 0.57 ± 0.15, an area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC) of 0.86 ± 0.08, and an area under the curve of the precision–recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.87 ± 0.09 using a 10-fold cross-validation. We developed a web service program, named FexSplice that accepts a genomic coordinate either on GRCh37/hg19 or GRCh38/hg38 and returns a predicted probability of aberrant splicing of A, C, and T variants.

Résumé :
Background and Objective We reported neutrophil-associated tissue damage in cedar pollinosis subjects with refractory nasal symptoms prior to pollinosis season. Because the leukotriene receptor antagonist, montelukast, can inhibit neutrophil recruitment and activation, we investigated its effects on symptom relief and nasal neutrophilia in pollinosis subjects in the preseason. Methods In the pollinosis preseason, symptomatic (PreSyP, n = 149) and asymptomatic subjects (PreAsP, n = 145) were prophylactically treated, and in season symptomatic subjects (InSyP, n = 134) were treated. Individuals were assigned to 1 of 2 treatment protocols: administration of cetirizine and fluticasone nasal spray (Cet-Flu) or montelukast, fexofenadine, and fluticasone nasal spray (Mo-Fex-Flu). Differences in symptom relief and inflammatory cell infiltration in nasal swabs were investigated. Results In pollen season, 59% of PreSyP subjects given Cet-Flu and 88% of those treated with Mo-Fex-Flu had none or mild symptoms ( P < .00001). In PreAsP subjects in season, 71% of Cet-Flu and 98% of Mo-Fex-Flu recipients had none to mild symptoms ( P < .0000001). The proportions of subjects in the PreSyP group with nasal swabs with neutrophils 1+ to 3+ before and after treatment by Mo-Fex-Flu were 59% and 18%, respectively ( P < .0001), and in PreAsyP, subjects with neutrophils 2+ to 3+ were 17% and 5%, respectively ( P = .034). In PreSyP, a significant reduction in the percentage of subjects with mast cells >1+ was seen following both Cet-Flu ( P = .027) and Mo-Fex-Flu ( P = .0014) treatments. Conclusion In PreSyP and PreAsP subjects, treatments with Mo-Fex-Flu were more effective than Cet-Flu to reduce nasal symptom scores. These effects were associated with reduction in the number of neutrophils and mast cells in nasal swabs.

Résumé :
Although the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil with high yield/quality through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is promising, it still faces many challenges. In this study, a Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared with the coprecipitation method and low-content ethanol was used as the cosolvent for the HTL of poplar. The results showed that the Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 catalyst significantly promoted the yield and energy recovery rate (ERR) of bio-oil compared with the control (10% ethanol content). At 260 °C for 30 min, 60Fe-40Co/Al2O3 had the best catalytic effect, achieving the highest bio-oil yield (67.35%) and ERR (93.07%). As a multifunctional bimetallic catalyst, Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 could not only increase the degree of hydrogenation deoxidization of the product but also promote the diversity of phenolic compounds gained from lignin. The bio-oil obtained from HTL with Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 as catalyst contained lower heterocyclic nitrogen, promoting the transfer of more bio-oil components to substances with lower boiling point.

By using first-principles methods based on density functional theory (DFT), we investigated the magnetism and work function of Fex-1Mnx/Fe (001) films with different spin arrangements (parallel (PL), antiparallel (APL1) and mixed (APL2)) for Mn and Fe atoms. The calculation shows that the spin arrangement and alloying have evident impact on the work function and moment of Fex-1Mnx/Fe (001) films. For Mn/Fe (001), the spin arrangement affects evidently the geometrical structure, work function and magnetism of the system. Moreover, the work function for non-magnetic (NM) state is found to be higher than that for magnetic state, and the work function of Mn/Fe (001) with PL state is less than that with APL2 state. For Fex-1Mnx/Fe (001), with increased Mn doping content, the Fe moments in the second layer decrease and their values are all less than the bulk value of Fe atom, which is due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn and Fe atoms. Furthermore, we found that the surface alloying can have an impact on the work function of Fex-1Mnx/Fe (001), but the role of spin polarization is also quite important.

Résumé :
The F elements of Drosophila melanogaster belong to the superfamily of long interspersed nucleotide element retrotransposons. To date, F-element transcription has not been detected in flies. Here we describe the isolation of a member of the F-element family, termed Fex, which is transcribed in specific cells of the female and male germ lines and in various tissues during embryogenesis of D. melanogaster. Sequence analysis revealed that this element contains two complete open reading frames coding for a putative nucleic acid-binding protein and a putative reverse transcriptase. Functional analysis of the 5' region, using germ line transformation of Fex-lacZ reporter gene constructs, demonstrates that major aspects of tissue-specific Fex expression are controlled by internal cis-acting elements that lie in the putative coding region of open reading frame 1. These sequences mediate dynamic gene expression in eight expression domains during embryonic and germ line development. The capacity of the cis-regulatory region of the Fex element to mediate such complex expression patterns is unique among members of the long interspersed nucleotide element superfamily of retrotransposons and is reminiscent of regulatory regions of developmental control genes.

Résumé :
Exercise can reduce androgen and insulin levels in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. Finasteride is also presumed to improve the developing follicle environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to observe the effects of the combination of exercise and finasteride therapy on hormone levels and ovarian morphology in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome. Forty female rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=8 each group): the PCOS sedentary group (P-Sed), PCOS exercise group (P-Ex), PCOS finasteride and sedentary group (P-FSed), and PCOS finasteride and exercise group (P-FEx), and healthy, age-matched rats were used as controls (CO). The results indicated that the levels of FINS in the P-FEx group were significantly lower than those in the P-Sed and P-FSed groups, while the ratio of fasting blood glucose (FBG)/fasting serum levels of insulin (FINS) in the P-FEx group was significantly higher than that in the P-Sed and P-FSed groups. Compared to the P-FEx group, serum levels of TT (total testosterone) in the P-Sed and P-FSed groups were significantly increased. The thickness of the follicular membrane and the number of atresia follicles in the P-FEx and CO groups were significantly lower than those in the P-Sed group, but there was no significant difference between the P-Ex and P-Sed groups. These results show that the combined usage of exercise and finasteride does not alter the effects of exercise on increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing androgen levels. There is also a synergistic effect of exercise and finasteride on the morphology of the ovary, including a reduced number of atresia follicles and thickness of the follicular membrane.

For the first time were established the regularities for the Cu2-xS – Fex+1S granules distribution by the size classes of obtained granulations for the Cu - Fe - S melt at temperatures of 1200, 1250, 1300 and 1350 °C. The maximum amount of Cu2-xS – Fex+1S material of size class 5.0 + 2.5, -2.5 + 1.6 and-1.6 + 1.0 mm, which corresponds to the conditions of following electrochemical processing and estimated as 72.5%, was obtained by granulation of the melt at 1200 °C. The granulometric characteristics of Cu2-xS – Fex+1S granules were estimated. With an increase in the overheating temperature of the Cu - Fe - S melt, granules with a large value of the average diameter were obtained, also the root-mean-square deviation of the particle size from the average value increases and the degree of polydispersity of the granules decreases. The duration of cooling for Cu2-xS – Fex+1S granules from the melt temperatures at 1200, 1250, 1300 and 1350 °C was calculated. In the entire considered temperature range, the particle cooling time is much longer than the spheroidization time, which contributes to the formation of spherical particles.

Résumé :
Electrochemical behaviour of various metallo cyano adducts of trans-[FeH(CN)(dppe)2], viz. the dinuclear complexes [FeH(dppe)2(μ-CN)PdCl2(PPh3)], [FeH(dppe)2(μ-CN)NiCl2(PCy3)], and trinuclear [{FeH(dppe)2(μ-CN)}2(ReOCl3)], [{FeH(dppe)2(μ-CN)}2PtCl(Ph)] and [{FeX(dppe)2(μ-CN)}2WCl3(OH)] (X = Cl or OH, dppe = 1,2-diphenylphosphinoethane, PCy3 = P(C6H11)3), as well as the benzoylisocyanide mononuclear adduct trans-[FeH(CNCOPh)- (dppe)2], is reported. All of them exhibit FeII/FeIII-based oxidations (which are reversible, except for trans-[FeH(CNCOPh)(dppe)2]). The metallocyanide bridges C≡N-Re-N≡C and C≡N-W-N≡C in [{FeH(dppe)2(μ-CN)}2(ReOCl3)] and [{FeX(dppe)2(μ-CN)}2WCl3(OH)], respectively, allow electronic communication between the iron centres, with possible generation of mixed-valence FeII/FeIII complexes whose comproportionation constant could be estimated in the former case. From the values of the measured oxidation potentials, the electrochemical PL and EL ligand parameters have been estimated for the metallocyanide ligands that were shown to behave as stronger net electron donors than organoisocyanides, although weaker than cyanide itself. Ligand-centred reduction processes were also observed to lead, in the cases of complexes trans-[FeH(CNCOPh)(dppe)2] (CNCOPh-based reduction) and [FeH(dppe)2(μ-CN)PdCl2(PPh3)] (PdII-based reduction in the CNPdCl2(PPh3)- metallocyanide ligand), to the dissociation of the adduct, with regeneration of the parent cyano complex trans-[FeH(CN)(dppe)2], thus reflecting the reductive decrease of the electrophilic (or Lewis acidic) character of the benzoyl and {PdCl2(PPh3)} groups.

Résumé :
Commercial copper and iron powders were used as starting materials. These powders were mechanically alloyed to obtain Cu(100-x) Fex supersaturated mixture. The milling duration was chosen in such a way as to obtain a nanostructured mixture and to form a supersaturated solid solution of CuFe; the powder mixture was used to deposit CuFe on a glass substrate. The elaboration of our films has been carried out using thermal evaporation process (physical vapor deposition) under 1 × 10-6 mbar vacuum from an electrically heated tungsten boat, using the supersaturated solid solution Cu(100-x) Fex powder obtained by mechanical alloying. The films deposition has been done on glass substrates. In this study, we present the composition effect on the structural and magnetic proprieties of Cu(100-x) Fex powder and thin films. The chemical composition, structural and magnetic proprieties of milled powders and thin films were examined by SEM, TEM, XRD, XRF and VSM.

Nanocomposite Fex(Al2O3)100-x films with concentration gradient along the long axis of the samples (40 mm) have been obtained by sputter deposition technique and investigated. Based on the electric and magnetoresistive investigations the gradient Fex(Al2O3)100-x samples in which concentration of one edge of the sample is smaller than concentration of a percolation threshold while concentration of opposite edge of this sample is upper the threshold have been determined. Influence of the heat flow direction on the thermoelectric power of the gradient samples has been investigated. Hysteresis of the thermoelectric power is observed when temperature gradient direction is changed.

Résumé :
Foaming incidents in activated sludge treatment plants are a worldwide problem and occur on a regular basis in both municipal and industrial activated sludge treatment plants. Foaming is most often caused by excessive growth of filamentous bacteria, especially the gram-positive ones affiliated within the Actinobacteria, e.g. the branched Mycolata or CandidatusMicrothrix parvicella. Previous studies have shown that populations of Microthrix can be controlled by addition of certain polyaluminium compounds, but until now no effective chemicals have been identified to control other important foam formers such as the Mycolata. A new chemical (FilamentEx, FEX-120) was tested in full-scale in a Swedish wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with immense foaming problems. In total, three different dosing events were carried out for more than 1 year. After only 8–17 weeks in each period, all foam had disappeared, and dosing of FEX-120 was stopped. Another 11 full-scale WWTPs in different countries were treated with FEX-120 because of severe Mycolata foaming on process tanks. In nine out of 11 plants, where the causative organisms were Gordonia or Skermania, a significant reduction of foam up to 100% was observed after treatment for approx. 10 weeks. In two WWTPs with unknown Mycolata organisms, no reduction was observed.

Résumé :
The possibility of unconventional neutrino scattering in the Sun via flavor changing neutral currents as a possible source of the solar neutrino deficit is investigated. If the effect is really significant, a resonant process will occur. Taking into account the neutrino deficit reported by the solar neutrino experiments (Kamiokande II, SAGE Gallex), one finds Δ2m21 = (0.6–1.4) × 10−5 eV 2 with no vacuum mixing and 0.16 ≤ fex ≤ 0.34 where fex is the lepton violating coupling. Our understanding of the neutrino phenomenon in the Sun may be improved through accuracy improvements in experiments measuring νee− elastic scattering or others searching for exotic lepton decays.

Résumé :
AbstractA feature detection and extinction retrieval (FEX) algorithm for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program’s (ARM) Raman lidar (RL) has been developed. Presented here is Part II of the FEX algorithm: the retrieval of cloud and aerosol extinction profiles. The directly retrieved extinction profiles using the Raman method are supplemented by other retrieval methods developed for elastic backscatter lidars. Portions of features where the extinction-to-backscatter ratios (i.e., lidar ratios) can be obtained are used to infer the lidar ratios for the regions where no such estimate can be made. When neither directly retrieved nor an inferred value can be determined, a climatological lidar ratio is used. This best-estimate approach results in the need to use climatological lidar ratios for less than about 5% of features, except for thin cirrus at the ARM tropical western Pacific Darwin site, where above 12 km, about 20% of clouds use a climatological lidar ratio. A classification of feature type is made, guided by the atmosphere’s thermodynamic state and the feature’s scattering properties: lidar ratio, backscatter, and depolarization. The contribution of multiple scattering is explicitly considered for each of the ARM RL channels. A comparison between aerosol optical depth from FEX and that from collocated sun photometers over multiple years at two ARM sites shows an agreement (in terms of bias error) of about −0.3% to −4.3% (relative to the sun photometer).

Résumé :
Severe energy deficit may impair hormonal regulation and physical performance in military trainings. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between energy intake, expenditure, and balance, hormones and military performance during a winter survival training. Two groups were studied: the FEX group (n = 46) had 8-day garrison and field training, whereas the RECO group (n = 26) had a 36-h recovery period after the 6-day garrison and field training phase. Energy intake was assessed by food diaries, expenditure via heart rate variability, body composition by bioimpedance, and hormones by blood samples. Strength, endurance and shooting tests were done for evaluating military performance. PRE 0 d, MID 6 d, POST 8 d measurements were carried out. Energy balance was negative in PRE and MID (FEX −1070 ± 866, −4323 ± 1515; RECO −1427 ± 1200, −4635 ± 1742 kcal·d−1). In POST, energy balance differed between the groups (FEX −4222 ± 1815; RECO −608 ± 1107 kcal·d−1 (p < 0.001)), as well as leptin, testosterone/cortisol ratio, and endurance performance (p = 0.003, p < 0.001, p = 0.003, respectively). Changes in energy intake and expenditure were partially associated with changes in leptin and the testosterone/cortisol ratio, but not with physical performance variables. The 36-h recovery restored energy balance and hormonal status after strenuous military training, but these outcomes were not associated with strength or shooting performance.
