AbstractThis article explores the juncture between historical time and space in the context of socialist feminism, primarily through the memoir of an Indian woman activist who spent four years in East Berlin as the Asian Secretary at the Women's International Democratic Federation. This primary source material is drawn from a longer history of Indian leftist women's participation in political mobilizations and organizational work, the literary tradition of travel writing, found especially in Bengal, and academic histories of socialist feminism.

After the Congress of Berlin in 1878, in Bosnia and Hercegovina we saw big changes. The Austrian government was building roads, and railroad tracks. In the Austro-Hungarian period, also they changed their architectural style; from the prevailing ottoman one to more like in Vienna or Prague. This situation was a short time, in live only one generation. These changes affected to life and behavior of Bosnia and Hercegovinas’ citizens. Was changed several people, because after the Austrian arrive, a lot of Muslims Bosniacs, and Turks, were left this part. There were elites in this place. Their positions, how “new elites” take people which they came from different part of the Habsburg Monarchy; Hungarians, Germans, Poles, Czechs, etc. They were taking new ideas, how feminism. The emancipation of women was something new in these places. The first woman, which was proclaiming the slogans, as teachers. On the article we can show two examples; Jelica Belović-Bernadzikowska, and Jagoda Truhelka. They were born in Osijek, from giving Bosnian part ideas, that girl needs to will independent and need to have good graduated. These modern ideas, supported, in a way, the government because in the country was a school program for girls. Austro-Hungarian politics was building a school for girls, and take some scholarship went girl studied in University, how Marija Bergman, born in Bosnia, daughter of some Jews officials. However teachers not only modern women, similar roles had women-doctors. Girls who graduated Faculty of Medicine, arrive in Bosnia and Hercegovina and help Muslim women. Poles Teodora Krajewska and Czechs Anna Bayerova also take ideas of feminism, but, most important that she was great respect between patience. Propagating the feministic ideas was thinking which affect all women. Most important was not only slogans but also changes in everyday life normal family in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The other day only men can work on the farmland or work. After the Congress of Berlin situations was changed. On the consequences, women must be going to work, often how a worker in fabric. Work was hard, but women first time have their cash. Automatically her position in society was better. These situations have consequences for the city, as like villages. We sow this situation in the book Vere Ehrlich, which researched this topic in the interwar period. In the article, we went to show, that this changing was things also women, which life to margin, how prostitutes. Naturally, their life was always difficult, but the new government also got assistance. Habsburg's administration knew, that better control of specific profession, because this is the way how deal with the epidemic of syphilis, and something like this. In this work, we use scientific literature and documents from archives, mainly the Archive of Federation Bosnia and Hercegovina, and Historical Archive from city Sarajevo, when was document fo Jelica Belović-Bernadzikowska. How method we use case study and analyzing to literature and historical sources.

Health concerns by migrants have been neglected in the German healthcare system, and they are impacted by discriminating discourses of othering. By analysing two autobiographical illness narratives by immigrants in contemporary Germany, this article exposes limitations in existing discourses of migration health and argues for more relational and affirmative theories of illness and care. Evelyn Leandro’s diary The Living Death: The Struggle with a Long-Forgotten Illness (2017) describes her own drawn-out therapy against leprosy as a Brazilian in Berlin. In Mr Kiyak Thought That the Best Part of His Life Will Start Now (2013), the Turkish-German journalist Mely Kiyak narrates her father’s experience with advanced lung cancer in a German hospital. Drawing on medical anthropology, postcolonial theory and material (eco)feminism, I argue that these narratives establish migrant health and agency in transnational assemblages that include chemotherapy, lungs and skin, family networks, healthcare providers, food cultures and health policies. These assemblages of illness are connected with the narratives’ hybrid and relational aesthetics and politics: similar to Gloria Anzaldúa’s practice of autohistoria-teoría, I show how Kiyak’s and Leandro’s life writing combines personal and communal storytelling with critical theorising to include diverse voices, languages, histories and identities. By transgressing identities of self and other, German and foreign, patient and physician, human and non-human, the narratives inspire a greater sense of the extent to which (all) bodies, histories, cultures, technology and medicine are entangled in a dense network of relations. This article envisions a relational and hybrid ontology and aesthetics of migration health and thereby intervenes into the growing field of transcultural medicine and medical humanities.

Na produção bibliográfica existente, constata-se uma lacuna no que diz respeito à participação feminina nas (sub)culturas juvenis. Será que jovens-adolescentes do sexo feminino constituem uma minoria no movimento hip hop ou em outras manifestações culturais como as galeras ou gangues? O presente artigo questiona a ausência de estudos sobre jovens-adolescentes do sexo feminino, tanto nos trabalhos sobre juventude como nos estudos feministas, destacando a necessidade de pesquisas voltadas para a compreensão das ações juvenis em seus contextos específicos. Com base em dados empíricos sobre jovens-adolescentes negras e jovens de origem turca pertencentes ao movimento hip hop nas cidades de São Paulo e Berlim, discute ainda a luta pela conquista de espaço e de reconhecimento nesse movimento cultural de predominância masculina.

So heftig und kontrovers wie der von Patsy L’Amour LaLove, einer an der HU Berlin promovierten Geschlechterforscherin, herausgegebene Essayband (Beißreflexe, 2017) wurde seit langer Zeit kein (wissenschaftliches) Buch mehr diskutiert. Es drängt sich der Eindruck auf, dass die sich selbst als aktivistische »Polittunte « verstehende Herausgeberin offensichtlich den Zeitgeist eines mit sich selbst strauchelnden Queerfeminismus getroffen habe: Solch eine Vielzahl an mehr als nur leidenschaftlichen Reaktionen allerlei Couleur konnte eine in erster Linie akademische Anthologie mit Texten zur aktuellen Verfassung der LGBTIQ*-Kultur und -Szene sowie zum Stand der akademisch geführten und im Zweifelsfall auch gelebten Queer Studies seit geraumer Zeit nicht verzeichnen – was sich unter anderem in der mittlerweile nun vierten Auflage des Titels innerhalb eines Jahres seit Veröffentlichung niederschlägt. Im Zuge der Debatte, welche in den letzten Wochen und Monaten in verschiedensten Medien (Zeit, Tagesspiegel, NZZ, FAZ, Süddeutsche) um die Publikation entbrannte, haben sich sowohl die darin versammelten AutorInnen als auch Judith Butler, Sabine Hark, Paula-Irene Billa, Alice Schwarzer und andere zu Wort gemeldet. Der selbst als Autor in besagtem Band vertretene freie Journalist und Redakteur Dirk Ludigs beanstandet seinerseits, dass die queeren akademischen Diskurse unserer Tage einem toten Rennen gleichen. Der Stellungskrieg der Kulturtheorien verändere nicht nur nichts mehr in den Köpfen aller Teilnehmenden, seine Debatten gehen zudem noch praktisch spurlos an all jenen vorbei, zu deren Verbesserung der Verhältnisse sie angeblich geführt werden würden. Es sei, so die Position des selber seit den 80er Jahren in der queeraktivistischen Szene Berlins sozialisierten Autors, an der Zeit, die (zu) weitgehende Akademisierung queeren Denkens und Handelns kritisch zu hinterfragen und nach fruchtbaren Quellen für einen anderen queeren Aktivismus zu suchen. Eine entgegengesetzte Position vertritt Andrea Geier. Auch sie räumt ein, dass die Identitätspolitik in eine Krise geraten sei –der Vorwurf, dass mehr um die Anerkennung von Identitäten statt für deren Überwindung gekämpft werde, würde darüber hinaus von Neudeutungen postmoderner Theorien begleiten werden sowie von der Frage, ob sich aus akademischen Theoriediskursen überhaupt noch emanzipatorisches Potential gewinnen ließe. Ihr Beitrag erörtert aus akademisch geschulter und kritischer Perspektive diese Entwicklungen und plädiert mit Nachdruck für eine Debattenkultur, welche sich mit intersektional geschärftem Blick notwendig komplexen Aushandlungsprozessen der uns heute in all ihren komplexen Facetten und Problematiken begegnenden Identitätskultur und -politik auseinandersetzt. It has been a long time since a (scientific) anthology has been discussed so intensely and controversially as it has been the case with the volume of Patsy L’Amour LaLove (Beißreflexe, 2017), who achieved her PhD in Gender studies at the HU Berlin. It is not easy to shake off the impression that the editor, who thinks of herself as an activist »Polittunte« (political pansy) has captured the Zeitgeist of a queer-feminism that is at war with itself: a fact which is reflected in the multitude of rather passionate responses from all kinds of social backgrounds; no other first and foremost academic anthology composed of texts concerning the current constitution of the LGBTIQ*-culture and –scene as well as discussing the current status of academically argued and sometimes lived queer-studies has been able to garner so much attention. The huge success of this work is also reflected in this being the fourth edition within one year since its original publication. Referring to the debate kindled by the anthology which has been present in different newspapers over the past weeks and months (Zeit, Tagesspiegel, NZZ, FAZ, Süddeutsche), some of the authors have made a public statement as well as other public figures such as Judith Butler, Sabine Hark, Paula-Irene Billa and Alice Schwarzer. Free journalist and editor, Dirk Ludigs, who is an author of one of the articles from the anthology has since stated that today’s academic discussion concerning queer subjects resembles a dead heat. The practice of positional warfare in culture theories not only fails to evoke a change in the minds of its participants but rather passes by the very people whose circumstances it originally helped to alleviate. Being an author of the Berlin queer-activist scene since the 1980s he states that it is time to challenge the (too) extensive academisation of queer thinking and action and to be on the outlook for other sources of queer activism. Andrea Geier supports a contradicting position; she, too, acknowledges the crisis of identity politics – the accusation that the fight is mainly about recognition of identity and less about the triumph over it is backed up by new interpretations of postmodern theories as well as the question of whether it is possible to gain emancipatory potential out of academic theory-driven discussions. Her article discussed these developments from an academically educated and critical perspective and expressively supports the call for a culture of debate that, with a keen eye for intersectional themes, discusses the necessarily complex negotiation processes of identity culture and politics in all their facets and inherent problems

The World War II diary A Woman in Berlin: Eight Weeks in the Conquered City (2005) documents one woman’s story of survival in the spring of 1945 in Berlin, during which upward of 130,000 women were raped by soldiers of the Red Army. First, this essay introduces the politics of recuperating the English translation of the diary within the context of the scant supporting historical documentation and memorialization of Berliner women’s experience during the occupation. Second, it demonstrates how the diary produces a feminist account of survival and a narrative for collective trauma by examining the diarist’s representations of the effects of rape and rubblestrewn Berlin. Third, the essay details the complicated publication history of the diary through a consideration of the relationship between the trauma sustained by the survivors of mass rape and the blows to German national identity that it documents.

Este trabalho tem como foco a emergência de uma geração de psicanalistas mulhe-res, nos anos 1920, cuja autoria foi reconhecida e que encontrou um lugar na his-tória do movimento psicanalítico. A partir de um breve contraste com a geração de psicanalistas mulheres dos anos 1910, o artigo interroga: o que tornou possível às analistas dos anos 1920 ocuparem um novo lugar? Nesse sentido, realçamos dois processos: o avanço das lutas feministas, encarnadas no movimento sufragista, e a abertura de um tempo em que as controvérsias, no movimento psicanalítico, não implicam, necessariamente, rupturas. A partir do Congresso de Berlim, em 1922, três temas dominaram os debates: a formalização da prática clínica, a análise de crianças e a sexualidade feminina. Nossa hipótese é de que o problema do feminino perpassa esses três temas como efeito de uma marca instaurada pela geração de 1910, que a de 1920 ativa, retrospectivamente.

As a materialist feminist from the former West Berlin I have always been in support of the German Democratic Republic as a system that granted womenextensive social benefits through the law. Before German reunification, rights to apprenticeship, employment, day care, and abortion were secured for East German women. Thus, in my imagination, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) occupied a space where gender and class equality were guaranteed—at least on paper.

This article discusses the imbrication of racialising and sexualising scientific practices of gender testing and verification in elite athletics competition, and their intersection with social politics, using as a theoretical frame the feminist, anti-racist work of Hortense Spillers (2003), Judith Butler (1990, 1993a, 1993b, 2004) and Anne Fausto-Sterling (2000), among others. It traces the practice of sex-gender testing of ‘women’ at sanctioned International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) track and field competitions in order to contextualise South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya’s experiences at the 2009 Berlin World Championships and the subsequent spectacularisation of her body through the discursive practices of representation.

Jesse Darling, a contemporary Berlin-based artist, produces sculptures, paintings, and drawings that animate material to depict a lived experience of queerness and disability. This article highlights a recent exhibition of Darling’s as an entry point to their wide-ranging practice. Refracted through the lens of Sara Ahmed’s concept of feminist ‘willfulness’, Darling’s objects depict the body as unruly, unpredictable, and given to change, making them exciting candidates for both disability and trans studies. At a moment in contemporary art and cultural production more broadly when gender-nonconformity is signaled through an attempt to erase bodily markers of specificity, Darling insists on such specificity as the inescapability of the human experience.

Abstract Transnational feminist translation studies stand for activism, cooperation and solidarity in connecting feminist thinking developed in all parts of the world (Alvarez et al. 2014, Castro/Ergun 2017, Flotow/ Farahzad 2017, Flotow 2019). One of the important issues is wartime sexual violence, which is the focus of this article, and constitutes a feminist, transnational phenomenon. The account of wartime sexual violence by female victims faces instrumentalization and manipulation by the agents involved in the publication process, including the translators, who are an active part of the patriarchal literary system, with the purpose “to make them fit in with the dominant, or one of the dominant ideological and poetical currents of their time” (Lefevere 1992: 8). The transnational reception, thus, is driven by ideological and commercial interests that agents in a literary system negotiate. The aim of this article is to analyse the transnational reception process, examined under the perspective of transnational feminist translation, and based on questions as who rewrites and how is the wartime sexual violence account rewritten. Undertaking a case study, the diary ‘Eine Fau in Berlin’ of an anonymous female author, Anonyma, who describes rape, prostitution and the gender relations in the context of Second World War, an analytical framework is developed to shed light on the question how women’s writing on wartime sexual violence and its transnational reception are determined by mechanisms of instrumentalization and manipulation that are due to the conceptions and moral values that prevail over wartime sexual violence in two different political and historical eras. We conclude that transnational feminist translation enables activism and solidarity about wartime sexual violence beyond geographical limitations. This leads to the empowerment of the victims on a transnational level.

This article is based on an ethnographic participation study of the production of a play called All about the ADHD and A+ Children of Noisy Village (ännu mer om alla vi ADHD- och MVG-barn i Bullerbyn) staged at one of Sweden’s most prominent playhouses for children’s and youth theatre: ung scen/öst. Within the familiar setting of the classroom, the play takes on the challenging task of questioning and scrutinizing the complex and tangled situation of contemporary neoliberal ideas and practices, their connections to capitalism and their impact on everyday school-life. This in front of an audience consisting mainly of individuals who were not even born at the time when the political map was radically re-drawn in Berlin in 1989, and who have grown up during a period when neoliberal governance has gained increasing influence in Swedish culture and society. The play mediates its dense, political content and its descriptions of teenagers’ everyday lives through a large portion of good old-fashioned entertainment, with music, singing and bizarre, laughter-provoking situations. The main research question to be answered in the article is: In what ways are the abstract contemporary economic-political manifestations of power and govern-ance expressed in this good-humored play for youth, and how can this be read from a feminist perspective? Hence, the article circles around three nodes that intersect in various ways: theatre, economic-political issues and feminist perspectives. The theoretical framework of the article is primarily based on a merger between, on the one hand, feminist social science and, on the other, feminist cultural analysis.

In this article, I examine how Sissieretta Jones (frequently described as America’s first Black superstar, among other superlatives) strategically leveraged her European performance reviews in order to increase her listenership and wages in the United States. Jones toured Europe for the first (and only) time from February until November in 1895. According to clippings that she provided to African American newspapers, the singer performed at the renowned Winter Garden in Berlin for three months. Sissieretta Jones also claimed that she performed for Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, at his palace and was subsequently presented with an elaborate diamond brooch for her performance. Afterward, the singer told the African American newspaper the Indianapolis Freeman that she would like to live in Europe permanently. Her biographers frequently cite the success of this trip and its symbolic importance for African Americans. And yet, evidence of these events in the archives of major German newspapers is elusive and contradictory at best, if it exists at all. Nevertheless, after the much-hyped tour, her career would take many twists and turns. Sissieretta Jones eventually performed in venues like Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden. She was the highest-paid Black female performer of the nineteenth century and a role model for future generations of Black performers.

Em 1936, quando se celebraram os Jogos Olímpicos de Berlim, Hitler confere a tarefa de filmá-los a Leni Riefenstahl, uma espécie de documentariasta do teceiro Reich que já, em 1934, havia feito um sobre o 1º Congresso Nazista. Olympia é, de certo modo, o filme oficial de Berlim 36, e, além de ser um documento da iconografia nazista foi realizado por uma mulher em um tempo onde isto não era comum na indústria cinematográfica. O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer uma análise interpretativa sobre o olhar feminino que atravessa o filme. Um olhar que, articulado com outros, se complementa em um todo narrativo indissociável do primeiro. A metodologia utilizada é da análise cultural visto que permite desvelar os significados que aparecem na superfície textual de Olimpia, cujos sentidos – alguns mais explíccitos que outros – estão plenos de referências contextuais. Se Olympia se mostra como um vagaroso deleite com atletas masculinos e femininos desnudos, um tanto ousado para a época e para o gênero documental, esta ousadia nos remete a uma colocação no filme a um só tempo estético e ideológico somente possível por tratar-se de um olhar feminino. Isto é o que este trabalho pretende demonstrar.

This article examines the significance of gender and sexuality within the German uniformed police. For a long time the police was regarded to be the classic domain of men, but since some years the police actively tries to employ more heterogeneous staff. These efforts result in a clear change of personnel: more and more women are working in the police. It is the aim of this article to firstly examine in which historical contexts gender and sexuality have been relevant categories within the police organisation. Secondly gender and sexuality in organisational theory, especially considering criticism of feminist organizational theory on classical concepts are discussed. Thirdly theories on micropolitical negotiations, processes of managing gender and sexuality are introduced and connected to the police. In the following part of this article two interview examples are presented and analysed, in which the significance of sexuality and gender today are discussed by female police officers.

This is a paper about radical filmmaking and housing justice in the Märkisches Viertel in the 1970s. The satellite estate on the outskirts of West Berlin was one of the largest housing projects in West Germany and, for many residents, a space of increasing marginality and insecurity. As this paper argues, it was also a site of experimental filmmaking that documented the conditions faced by residents living in the Märkisches Viertel. The paper focuses on a group of students closely connected to the Deutschen Film- und Fernsehnakademie (dffb or the German Film and Television Academy) who began in the late 1960s to film various political activities and discussions in the neighbourhood. It places particular emphasis on the work of Helga Reidemeister, a social worker and student at the dffb whose documentary films adopted a working practice that depended on the direct participation of the families and women, in particular, with which she collaborated. Through a close reading of her 1979 film, Von wegen ‚Schicksal’ (1979), the paper foregrounds Reidemeister’s role as a feminist filmmaker whose work explored the mechanisms of displacement faced by tenants living in the Märkisches Viertel and the wider ‘structures of feeling’ that they generated. At stake here, is a broader commentary on the history of housing struggles in West Berlin and the importance of documentary filmmaking as a methodology for housing justice.

Recently, Judith Butler refused to accept an award for civil courage at the Berlin Christopher Street Day, because she felt the event had become too commercial, and the event's organization had failed to distance itself from certain discriminatory statements. This, as well as many of her works, suggests that more than any other contemporary feminist author, Butler is aware of the risk of implication in exclusionary politics; a risk she might therefore successfully avoid. However, in this essay I argue that to the extent her theory of performativity has become a hegemonic framework within the field of gender studies, it leads to the foreclosure of certain possible gendered identities. Using Nancy's notion of finite thinking, I argue that a different approach to universality may lead to a less exclusionary way of conceptualizing gender.

Given Angela Merkel’s long-standing reluctance to label herself a feminist, many scholars would find it hard to credit her with the increasingly “intersectional” composition of the Bundestag and the Landtage as of the 2021 elections. The last 16 years have nonetheless witnessed major shifts in German policies affecting the rights of women, persons with migration background, and lgbtqia community members. These developments have arguably contributed, directly and indirectly, to voters’ willingness to accept candidates with diverse backgrounds as capable of representing “the people’s interests” beyond the needs of their respective identity groups. This article considers multiple factors contributing to increasing diversity among German lawmakers at various levels, including policy shifts that have helped to reconfigure the political opportunity structure and thus the electoral landscape. It concludes with reflections on Merkel’s legacy, coupled with the role of generational change in “normalizing” diversity across the Berlin Republic.

This essay traces the theorization of interwar animation through period analogies with painting and dance, paying special attention to the valorization of concepts such as dematerialization and embodiment, which metaphors of visual music and physical kinesthesis were used to promote. Beginning in 1919, and exemplified by her feature-length film Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1926), Lotte Reiniger directed numerous silhouette films animated in an ornate style that embraced decorative materiality. This aesthetic set her in uneasy relation to the avant-garde, whose strenuous attempts to distance abstraction from ornament took the form of absolute film, and were screened together at the Absolute film Matinee of 1925. However, their claims for aesthetic integrity were staked on territory these artists largely had in common. By adopting a feminist approach that examines networks of collaboration, publication, and artistic production in Weimar Berlin, this essay reveals Reiniger as an early proponent of haptic cinema in interwar Europe and one of animation's earliest and most perceptive theorists.

ABSTRACTThis essay explores the intersection of concert dance, cultural memory, Black womanhood, and non-linear spacetime from an Afro-European perspective. Inspired by Black feminist methodologies, the text interweaves performance analysis, historical context, interdisciplinary theory including my own concept of perforMemory, and auto-ethnographic experience gained through participant observation. My writing moves along three lines of inquiry tuned in the key of C: contextualizing, conjuring and contemplating. The article offers a case study of I Step on Air, a contemporary dance piece created by Nigerian-German dancer-choreographer Oxana Chi (Berlin/New York) and dedicated to Ghanian-German poet and activist May Ayim. By including an interlude with the choreographer's own creative writing about the piece, the article also provides the reader with the precious perspective of Oxana Chi on her process. Walter Benjamin's concept of the flâneur has been widely used to conventionalize ‘the disinterested voyeur, the lonely figure haunting the streets of cities, the person who watches the spectacle of modern life’. Petra Kuppers argues that the flâneur is as central to the ‘nineties cityscape as to that of Baudelaire's Paris, of which Benjamin was writing, or to his own inter-war Berlin. She responds to feminist and other objections and, while recognizing the validity of later writings on the nature of the body such as Foucault's, argues that the flâneur remains valuable in counterbalancing ‘aspects of contemporary theory that use the human body as metaphor’ with the physicality of ‘a lived set of material practices and inscribed discourses’. To illustrate and develop her argument she uses moments from Kathryn Bigelow's film Strange Days (1996), performances by the Austrian group Bilderwerfer and by Francesca Vilalta-Ollé, and the camera-dance made for TV, Pace (1996). Objetivo: caracterizar os distúrbios do sono dos pacientes submetidos à polissonografia e identificar suas associações com variáveis epidemiológicas. Métodos: estudo transversal, observacional, conduzido com análise de dados dos prontuários de 101 pacientes submetidos a polissonografia no Laboratório de Medicina do Sono do HUMAP, Campo Grande, MS. Os dados utilizados foram os laudos da polissonografia e escalas padronizadas (escala de sonolência de Epworth e Questionário de Berlim). Resultados: O alto risco para Síndrome da Apneia Obstrutiva do Sono (SAOS) foi identificado em 83% dos avaliados. Quanto ao perfil polissonográfico, 77% foram diagnosticados com SAOS, sendo a maioria representada pelo sexo feminino. Dos pacientes com SAOS, 95,5% apresentava obesidade ou sobrepeso. A Sonolência Excessiva Diurna foi identificada em 51,2% dos pacientes com diagnóstico de SAOS. Conclusão: A prevalência de distúrbios do sono foi elevada, sendo que os pacientes com diagnóstico de SAOS, maioria sexo feminino, apresentaram com maior frequência SED, sobrepeso ou obesidade e Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica, fatores de risco importantes para a síndrome respiratória.

This article brings into dialogue the work of Jean-Luc Nancy and Berlin School filmmaker Valeska Grisebach to consider the relationship between film sound, gender and settler colonialism in Western ( Valeska Grisebach, 2017 ). I draw connections between Nancy's Listening and Eugenie Brinkema's concept of radical quiet to examine how the film's sonic composition attends to the sonority of silence and voice. I argue that Western combines sonic strategies of radical quiet and part-subtitled multilingual dialogue to undermine the sovereign silence associated with the genre's white heroic masculinity and challenge linguistic nonreciprocity in settler colonial landscapes. The article contends that these strategies work together to destabilise mastery within the narrative's discursive economy and within the spectatorial experience, shifting the spectator towards a mode of Nancean listening that invites defamiliarising encounters with foreignness that depart from existing theories of embodied spectatorship. Western brings to the fore the political stakes of silence, linguistic difference, and Nancean listening as model of communication, as they intersect with the film's feminist and anti-colonialist project of revisionist critique.

A Tuberculose – TB é uma doença distinguida como fatal, causada pelo Mycobacterium tuberculosis, bactéria identificada em 24 de março de 1882, em Berlim (Alemanha) por Robert Koch. Sua transmissão ocorre por via aérea, de um indivíduo doente a um sadio. O escopo do trabalho foi identificar os aspectos que contribuem e dificultam a adesão ao tratamento terapêutico de jovens com tuberculose, além de descrever o perfil dos pacientes nos casos notificados de tuberculose e a sequência do tratamento na cidade de Itabuna. Foi realizado um questionário estruturado com perguntas objetivas e aplicado entre os meses de maio e agosto de 2015, com os pacientes assistidos pelo centro de referência, as amostras foram analisadas estatisticamente e de acordo com estudo bibliográfico acerca do tema foram encontrados os seguintes resultados: dos pacientes entrevistados, 64% eram do sexo feminino, 54% solteiras, a grande maioria dos pacientes relataram ter renda mensal de dois salários mínimos, considerando o tamanho de uma família brasileira, baixo nível de escolaridade, falta de saneamento básico em torno de 60% dos entrevistados, e 90% nega ter sofrido preconceito após diagnóstico confirmado.Palavras-chave: Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Epidemiologia.AbstractTuberculosis - TB is a disease characterized as fatal, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a bacterium identified on March 24th, 1882, in Berlin (Germany) by Robert Koch. Its transmission is by air, from an individual sick to a healthy one. The scope of the study was to identify the aspects that contribute and make difficult the adherence to the therapeutic treatment of young people with tuberculosis, besides describing the profile of the patients in the reported cases of tuberculosis and the treatment sequence in the city of Itabuna. A structured questionnaire was carried out with objective questions between May and August 2015, with the patients assisted by the reference center, the samples were analyzed statistically and according to a bibliographic study about the subject the following results were found: of the patients interviewed 64% were female, 54% were single, the majority of the patients reported having a monthly income of two minimum wages, considering the size of a Brazilian family, low level of schooling, lack of basic sanitation around 60% of respondents and 90% deny having suffered prejudice after confirmed diagnosis.Keywords: Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While earlier dramatists treated Medea as a dramatic character, it was Euripides who gave her enduring theatrical prominence. Beyond crafting a timely attack upon a treacherous Corinth to appeal to Athens at the start of the Peloponnesian War, Euripides developed Medea to question the social role of women within a proudly patriarchal society. And he may have been the first to make Medea a non-Greek, a Colchian, a “barbarian”—a term that had become more derisive in the fifth century. In the Golden Age, a female foreigner was marginalized by gender and by heritage/race/ethnicity; a justified or sympathetic Medea challenged Athenian prejudices about both. Yet this Medea is problematic: a seriously aggrieved wife is driven to horrible acts against Greeks—Jason, his sons, the king of Corinth, and as a complicating fillip of multi-gender vengeance, the female rival. Our sympathies are subverted: a wronged Medea could also be a bloody figure of feminine and alien power, fatal to men and women, public and domestic order.

In this article Keld Hyldig examines how Castellucci, in a response to Hölderlin's translation and commentaries on the tragedy, staged Oedipus as a theatrical and philosophical confrontation between religious and rational approaches to knowledge. The staging was seemingly simple, showing a group of nuns performing Oedipus in a monastery. However, the nuns’ Christian and feminine performance of the pagan and masculine tragedy was the basis of a metatheatrical complexity, which was reinforced through a film projection showing Romeo Castellucci getting tear gas sprayed in his eyes, making the relation between physical reality and fictional representation problematic. Keld Hyldig is an Associate Professor in Theatre Studies at the University of Bergen. He has published several articles about the Ibsen tradition in Norwegian theatre and is currently working on a monograph on that subject.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ask how forms of “performative” interventions can prompt processes of re-thinking, which can, in turn, instigate the critical production of public space. Most importantly, it also asks how this methodology can manifest within various cultural and political contexts. Today, public spaces tend to be controlled either by the state or by private corporations. Neoliberal policies promote commercial interests, which subsequently drives inequality and determines what can and cannot be accessed by the public. The public spaces that are currently present in the neoliberal cities are, in fact, “pseudo” public spaces. Design/methodology/approach In an attempt to form new understandings of this problem, the authors’ approach is rooted in feminist theories of performativity, which focus on how identities are persistently re-produced through performance. These theories consider how the “self” is always entangled within everyday life interactions and how it is shaped by both societal and bodily practices. Framing spaces as shapable, informed by the embodied dialectic relations between spaces and social relations, the study uses forms of performative methodology to create productive disruptions and “constructed situations” (Debord, 2012). This methodology consists of intervention within these spaces in order to produce alternative public space and forms of publicness. Based on research conducted at the Sheffield School of Architecture, as well as a four-day invited workshop at the Floating University Berlin, this study investigates applications of performative practice methodology in the cities of Amman and Berlin. Findings The paper will begin by exploring how the two cities are regulated through various political and planning policies that affect public spaces. This line of enquiry will also involve questioning physical, social and political access to public space in these contexts and analysing the various actants, performative actions and processes that were involved in producing performative interventions. Originality/value The paper will conclude by discussing the potential and limitations of applying and translating such approaches in public spaces within different cultural and political contexts. As such, the study proposes a new methodological framework for re-thinking and provoking the critical production of public space through forms of performative spatial practice.

Objetivo: Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a qualidade do sono, risco da Síndrome de Apneia Obstrutiva do Sono (SAOS) e autopercepção em saúde de idosos comunitários no interior do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo transversal, observacional com abordagem quantitativa, realizado nos meses de novembro e dezembro de 2015, com 61 idosos. Os participantes foram avaliados quanto autopercepção em saúde com instrumento, para avaliar a qualidade do sono foi usado o índice de qualidade de sono de Pittsburg, o risco da SAOS foi avaliado através do questionário clínico de Berlin. Resultados: Participaram do estudo 61 idosos com idade média de 68,6 (7,2), em sua maioria um total de 46 (75,4%) eram do sexo feminino, 32 indivíduos (52,2%) consideraram sua saúde mais ou menos, em relação ao sono 11 (34,4%) possuíam um alto risco de ser portador da SAOS e 32 (52,5%) apresentavam um sono ruim e presença de distúrbios em 9 (14,8%). Conclusão: Foi percebido que mais da metade dos idosos apresentavam um sono ruim ou presença de distúrbios, em menos da metade da população foi encontrado um alto risco de desenvolver SAOS e sua saúde em sua maioria foi considerada “mais ou menos”.

Intersectional perspectives in postcolonial theories and gender studies have long argued that femininity represented in museums and exhibitions is subjected to multiple forms of othering. 1) Acquired social modes of looking at artifacts, women and/or Others correlate with androcentric male gaze that passivizes the object being looked at. 2) Women’s social roles in binary androcentric system further render femininity and feminine activities as associated with passivity. Thus, reproduction, care, and socialization as women’s tasks are symbolically relegated to domestic, immanent sphere as a type of work that merely maintains the continuity of a society’s life. 3) In traditional patriarchal schemes, then, transcendental masculine activity is linked with political, economic, scientific, and decision-making realms that are socially constructed as more influential and significant factors in shaping history, thereby being viewed as more worthy of remembering and recording. 4) Representations of minorities in terms of their gender, racial, class, sexual and/or indigenous identities in institutions safeguarding knowledge and historical memory take place in a pre-defined and pre-mediated context shaped by Euro-centric, Judeo-Christian, orientalist epistemologies, which inherently relate knowledge to power and objectification. Tackling such a value system and epistemological bias posits a major challenge for today’s museums, institutions of memory and educational approaches. The following article follows suit in discussing the theoretical and practical potentials of decolonial methodologies which have been formulated from bellow by (formerly) othered, gendered, racialized and objectified positions. The text seeks to demonstrate some of the opportunities this standpoint offers in analyzing a case of (more or less) good practice in the American Museum of Natural History in its attempt to contrast historical narratives pertaining to early European settlements in what is now New York City. Further, elaborating on the tradition of quilting in the U.S., human zoos and exhibits of the Berlin Wall beyond Europe, the article argues for nuanced contextualization and intersectional methods in current musem work.

e20666 Background: Cervical cancer (CxCa) and prostate cancer (PRCa) have a major impact on sexuality, quality of life (QoL) and patients (pts) require social support(SS). Study aim was to compare sexual satisfaction and activity,QoL and level of required and received SS in group of CxCa and PRCa pts min.3 months after radical radiotherapy (RTH). Methods: 97pts were included to the study:50 non-metastatic PRCa pts (54-83y, M=68,8) and47 CxCa pts (27-69y,M=54,4) after RTH. Subjects filled out:QLQ-C30,PR25,CX24, Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS) and demographic data.The Chi2,t-Student test,and linear regression analyses were used (p<0,5). Results: However sexual activity and satisfaction in both cancer groups is significantly lower (p<0,05) than in healthy population, no differences were observed between CxCa and PRCa pts. No difference were found between general and any subscale of QoL in both groups, although men needed significantly more help with eating, dressing, washing or using the toilet. However,men felt less male than women less feminine because of cancer (p<0,001). Predictors to better femininity evaluation (R2=0,650;p<0,05)were: higher appetite, emotional functioning, perceived available instrumental support and marital status. Predictors of poor masculinity evaluation (R2=0,346;p<0,05)were: shortness of breath, age, lower perceived available emotional support. The most significant differences (p<0,05) were observed between groups in the evaluation of SS: perceived available emotional SS was higher in pts with CxCa than with PRCa, while protective-buffering SS, currently received emotional SS and general SS were higher in the group of PRCa than CxCa pts. Conclusions: QoL was similar in both groups, in some areas men needed more help that women. Sexual activity and satisfaction is lower in cancer pts in comparison with general population, but no differences were observed between CxCa and PRCa pts, however emotional SS was crucial for better sexual satisfaction. The more visible difference were found in SS, and even men with PRCa have been receiving more SS,women with CxCa perceived particular SS higher than in fact such support had experienced.

The paper elaborates on the semantics of the 11 Serbian non-basic colour terms – namely, the adjectival lexemes bordo; burgundy, tirkizna; turquoise, zlatna; gold/golden, bež; beige, srebrna; silver, teget; navy (blue), oker; ochre, lila; lilac, ciklama; fuchsia, krem; cream, and pink; vivid pink. The given terms represent a counterpart of the 11 basic colour terms, or BCTs, first named so by Berlin and Kay in 1969. Based on the free word-associations, collected from 142 examinees, all of whom are native Serbian speakers, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) primary associations for (a) lila, and (b) tirkizna are the natural colours of (a) ‘flowering plants’, and (b) ‘the sea’ (a dominant association) as well as ‘the sky’ (a secondary association), respectively. Moreover, these are descriptive definitions of the Serbian BCTs (a) ljubičasta; purple, and (b) plava; blue, respectively (lila and tirkizna are shades of ljubičasta and plava, respectively); (2) bordo, krem, and oker evoke mental images of various artificial entities from the extralinguistic context. Thus, for example, available associations for bordo are cosmet- ics, clothing items, home textiles, cars, etc. Nevertheless, the natural referents ‘a sour cherry’ (Serb. višnja), ‘a cherry’, and ‘blood’ are also mentioned. As for the non-basic term oker, it is percieved to be the colour of ‘walls’, ‘clothing items’, ‘footwear’, as well as ‘human/animal excrement’, ‘a dog’, and ‘autumn’. Finally, krem brings to mind certain ‘food’ associations, mostly ‘Eurocrem’, that is, a two-coloured (brown and white) hazelnut- and cocoa-flavoured sweet milk chocolate spread. Still, the associations here are also those of ‘skin’, ‘nails’, and ‘cof- fee’; (3) the primary associations of pink are ‘TV Pink and its owner Mr. Željko Mitrović’; (4) teget and ciklama are percieved to be predominatly the colours of ‘male and female clothing’, respectively. As a matter of fact, ciklama is a shade of pink and it is commonly associated with ‘feminine’ and ‘femininity’ as well as ‘flowers’, ‘a beetroot’, and ‘sweets’; (5) srebrna and zlatna basically evoke mental images of ‘silver and gold/golden jewelry’, respectively. Another fre- quent association here is that of ‘silver and gold(en) medals, trophies, plaques, and awards’, all of which are administered to the first and second place winners, respectively; (6) finally, beige is a neutral colour which is typically associated with ‘human/animal skin’, ‘wood’ and ‘wood products’, as well as ‘white coffee’, ‘edible or cosmetic cream’, etc.

Introdução: A reabilitação com implantes dentários tornou-se possível de forma imediata a partir do conhecimento e aplicação da osseointegração. Esse procedimento propicia otimização entre o tempo de osseointegração e maturação óssea, além de minimizar a reabsorção alveolar, preservar a arquitetura gengival, e evitar novo procedimento cirúrgico. Objetivo: Evidenciar o sucesso de implante dentário unitário, instalado imediatamente após exodontia e curetagem de lesão periapical extensa, e a instalação da prótese com proservação de 33 meses. Relato do caso: Paciente do sexo feminino, 24 anos de idade, apresentou-se com uma parúlide na gengiva inserida acima do dente 25 e fratura coronal do mesmo. A tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) revelou uma extensa área hipodensa na região do ápice da raiz do dente 25, medindo 6,7 X 8,2 mm. A referida lesão já havia causado fenestração da parede vestibular, cerca de dois terços no sentido ápice-coroa. Foi instituído como plano de tratamento a instalação de implante dentário imediato com carga imediata. A prótese final foi instalada 13 meses após a instalação do implante. Decorridos 17 meses do procedimento cirúrgico, foi solicitada radiografia periapical de controle, onde foi possível avaliar trabeculado ósseo sadio em torno do implante.
