Résumé :
Insulin resistance, a hallmark of metabolic disorders, is a risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Impairment of insulin responsiveness in vascular endothelium contributes to insulin resistance. The reciprocal relationship between insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction augments the pathophysiology of metabolism and cardiovascular functions. The most abundant green tea polyphenol, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), has been shown to have vasodilator action in vessels by activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). However, it is not known whether EGCG has a beneficial effect in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced endothelial dysfunction. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a normal chow diet (NCD) or HFD with or without EGCG supplement (50 mg·kg−1·day−1) for 10 wk. Mice fed a HFD with EGCG supplement gained less body weight and showed improved insulin sensitivity. In vehicle-treated HFD mice, endothelial function was impaired in response to insulin but not to acetylcholine, whereas the EGCG-treated HFD group showed improved insulin-stimulated vasodilation. Interestingly, EGCG intake reduced macrophage infiltration into aortic tissues in HFD mice. Treatment with EGCG restored the insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of eNOS, insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), and protein kinase B (Akt), which was inhibited by palmitate (200 μM, 5 h) in primary bovine aortic endothelial cells. From these results, we conclude that supplementation of EGCG improves glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and endothelial function. The results suggest that EGCG may have beneficial health effects in glucose metabolism and endothelial function through modulating HFD-induced inflammatory response.

Résumé :
The paper explores the origins, development and basic genre features of сommedia dell'arte. The first part of the paper deals with the archetypal comic elements of сommedia dell'arte. The historical significance of this type of comedy, as Pandolfi (1957) stresses, lies in the fact that it unequivocally confirms the autonomy of theatrical art by imposing the neverending quest for the freedom to critically examine all the aspects of social life without any dose of censorship or limitations. Its comic pattern has the roots in the grotesque and absurdity of real life, which allows for the actors to fully affirm their artistic aspirations. Shakespeare’s romantic and pastoral comedy focuses on the final reconciliation or conversion of the blocking characters rather than their punishment: the rival brothers Oliver and Orlando are reconciled; Duke Frederick is miraculously converted. This was also a theme present in the medieval tradition of the seasonal ritual play, as Frye notices and claims that “we may call it the drama of the green world, its plot being assimilated to the ritual theme of the triumph of life and love over the waste land...Thus the action of the comedy begins in a world represented as a normal world, moves into the green world, goes into metamorphosis there in which the comic resolution is achieved, and returns to the normal world” (Frye 1957, 182). The Forest of Arden in As You Like It represents an emanation of Frye’s “green world”, which is analogous to the dream world, the world of our desires. In this symbolical victory of summer over winter, we have an illustration of “the archetypal function of literature in visualizing the world of desire, not as an escape from ’reality’, but as the genuine form of the world that human life tries to imitate” (Frye 1957, 184). In addition, the marriage between Orlando and Rosalind takes place in the Forest of Arden not by a coincidence. This is Shakespeare’s vision of the final unity and healing only to be accomplished in the ‘Mother’ Forest, as Hughes terms it (1992, 110), which ultimately represents a symbol of totality of nature and men’s psychic completeness. In Frye’s reading of Shakespeare’s green world, an identical idea of the heroine as the lost soul is expressed: “In the rituals and myths the earth that produces the rebirth is generally a female figure, and the death and revival, or disappearance and withdrawal of human figures in romantic comedy generally involves the heroine” (Frye 1957, 183). Thus, Rosalind represents the epitome of the matriarchal earth goddess that revives the hero and at the same time brings about the comic resolution by disguising herself as a boy (for those members of the audience and/or readers who regard the play as an instance of Hughes’ passive ritual drama and thus primarily enjoy the process of the young lovers’ overcoming various impediments on the way to a desirable end of the play).

Résumé :
Objective: The study was designed to investigate the in vivo effects of black and green tea consumption on serum lipid profile and cardiac function in hyperlipidemic rats. Methods: 24 male Wistar rats, average weight 125 g were sorted into four groups: A, B, C and D. Normal control group (A) were fed standard rat chow; the remaining three groups (B, C and D) received rat chow supplemented with 2% (w/w) cholesterol to induce hypercholesterolemia. Group C and D were administered 40 mg/ml of black and green tea respectively while group B (hyperlipidemic control) were not treated. The feeding and tea administration lasted 6 weeks. Results: Significant reduction in body weight and heart weight index was recorded in rats administered black and green tea compared with the untreated group. Black and green tea consumption also caused significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk ratio accompanied with elevated HDL-cholesterol compared to untreated group. Significant alterations in cardiac marker enzymes: creatine kinase (CK), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were also observed in serum and heart homogenates of untreated hyperlipidemic rats which were normalized in rats administered the teas. These results are synonymous with decreased risk of atherosclerosis and protective potential on cardiac function by green and black tea. Conclusion: We conclude in this study that regular intake of black and green tea might be useful in treatment of obesity and prevention of cardiovascular complications arising from hyperlipidemia.

Highlight Research Cinnamaldehyde for shrimp Dynamics of Vibrio and the correlation with shrimp health status Green and yellow Vibrio bacteria in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas of shrimp Cinnamaldehyde decrease the number of green Vibrio bacteria Abstract Disease can cause shrimp mortality and high economic losses caused by Vibriosis group. One alternative is using cinnamaldehyde which function as an anti-microbial and inhibit the production of toxins released by microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the administration of cinnamaldehyde on the dynamics of Vibrio bacteria and the health status of Pacific white shrimp fed with cinnamaldehyde-containing feed. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisted of 4 treatments and 3 replications consisting of treatment K, A, B, and C which mean feeding without cinnamaldehyde, feeding containing cinnamaldehyde dose of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% respectively. Parameters included total bacteria (green and yellow Vibrio) in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas, as well as immune responses parameters, including total hemocyte count (THC), respiratory burst (RB), and phenol-oxidase (PO). All data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel 2016 and all statistical analysis was conducted in the SPSS v.22.0 software with one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT (P=0.05). The results showed that the administration of cinnamaldehyde influences the dynamics of Vibrio and health status of shrimp. At the beginning and at the end of cinnamaldehyde administration, green and yellow Vibrio bacteria are mostly found in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas. The administration of cinnamaldehyde to Pacific white shrimp can reduce the number of green Vibrio bacteria both in the intestine and hepatopancreas as shown in treatments C and B. Cinnamaldehyde also affected the higher percentage of yellow Vibrio bacteria in treatments C and B compared to control (K). The highest immune responses of THC and RB were produced in treatments A and C compared to K. The decrease of green Vibrio bacteria and increased colonization of yellow Vibrio bacteria were correlated with immune responses. The best treatment in this study is treatment C.

Résumé :
Urbanization leads to the growth of impervious surfaces, which increases surface runoff, causing pluvial and flash flood phenomena. Furthermore, it significantly limits the infiltration of stormwater into the ground; this, in turn, reduces groundwater supply, ultimately intensifying drought effects. In order to adapt urbanized areas to climate change, the objective is to stop these unfavorable processes and strive for recreating the natural water cycle through developing decentralized stormwater management practices on private properties. An important management instrument that motivates property owners to invest is economic incentives, such as stormwater or impact fees associated with a system of rebates/discounts that depend on the applied stormwater runoff reduction solutions. Herein, we analyze a new economic instrument—a fee for reducing natural field retention—which is planned to be introduced in Poland. We assessed the incentive and funding (income-generating) function of the fee based on the example of the Sudół river catchment in Krakow, Poland. The research involved conducting simulation calculations and assessing the incentive impact through calculating investment Net Present Value (NPV), which is the investor’s response to the proposed economic incentives included in the structure of the fee and the rebate system. This study demonstrated errors and loopholes in the suggested fee rules—too low rates that prevent achieving profitability (negative NPV) for small-scale stormwater retention practices, and incorrect conditions that enable obtaining discounted fees. We also estimated the fee rate that ensures investment profitability.

Résumé :
2008/2009
For an X-ray free electron laser (FEL), a high-quality electron bunch with low emittance, high peak current and energy is needed. During the phases of acceleration, bunch compression and transportation, the electron beam is subject to radio frequency curvature and to wakefields effects. Thus, the energy profile of the electron beam can present a parabolic profile, which has important electromagnetic effects on the FEL process. The quality of the electron beam is also degraded by the interaction with the low-gap undulator vacuum chamber. In our work we first analyze this interaction, deriving a formula to evaluate the longitudinal and the transversal wakefields for an elliptical cross section vacuum chamber, obtaining accurate results in the short range. Subsequently within the Vlasov-Maxwell one-dimensional model, we derive the Green functions necessary to evaluate the radiation envelope, having as initial conditions both an energy chirp and curvature on the electrons and eventually an initial bunching, which is useful to treat the harmonic generation FEL cascade configuration. This allows to study the impact of the elecron beam energy profile on the FEL performance. Using the derived Green functions we discuss FEL radiation properties such as bandwidth, frequency shift, frequency chirp and velocity of propagation. Finally, we propose a method to achieve ultra-short FEL pulses using a frequency chirp on the seed laser and a suitable electron energy profile.

This work presents a new time-marching scheme able to reduce spurious oscillations by means of numerical damping for elastic wave propagation problems in the framework of the Explicit Green's Approach (ExGA) [1]. The integral expression concerned with the ExGA is written in terms of the Green's and the Step response functions. Their computations are carried out independently by means of the semidiscrete FEM and the Central difference method. Due to the principle of causality, the Green's and Step response functions admit a compact support surround the source points for a small enough time step that is usually employed in common explicit time integration methods applied to wave propagation modeling. In this sense, the Green's and Step response functions at t = Δt can be e ciently computed locally through small subdomains. Each local subdomain with its respective submesh covers only nodes whose Green's and Step response function values do not vanish. The accuracy and e ciency of the proposed methodology are demonstrated by analyzing three numerical examples.

In this thesis we theoretically investigate the behaviour of quantum particles (electrons, atoms, photons, etc.) moving in a random medium and undergoing Anderson localization. For noninteractingparticles, the energy spectrum can possess one or more critical points, where the nature of the single-particle wavefunctions changes from extended to localized leading to a undergoes a metal-insulator phase transition, also known as Anderson transition.A fundamental question is whether and how Anderson transitions survive in interacting quantum systems. Here we study a minimal model of two particles moving in a disordered lattice and subject to short-range mutual interactions. By combining large-scale numerics with Green’s functions techniques, we show that two-particle Anderson transitions do occur in three dimensions and explore the phase diagram in the space of energy, disorder and interaction strength. The latter presents a rich structure, characterized by a doubly reentrant behavior, caused by the competition between scattering and bound states of the pair. We also show that previous claims of 2D Anderson transitions of the pair are essentially due to finite-size effects.A second problem that we address in this thesis is the occurrence of 2D metal-insulator transitions for a single particle in the presence of a spatially correlated potential and subject to spin-orbit interactions, described by Rashba-Dresselhaus couplings. We illustrate that, irrespective of the properties of the disorder, there is a regime where the critical energy depends linearly on the disorder strength. The slope and the intercept are studied in the vicinity of the spin-helix point, where the SU(2) symmetry is restored and the 2D metal-insulator transition disappears

Résumé :
Droop-Nose Leading Edge (DNLE) morphing wings are one of the most promising devices in order to achieve aerodynamic drag and noise reduction during take-off and landing phases. An accurate design of these structures could lead to the decrease of aircraft fuel consumption in the perspective of reaching a greener aviation, following the objectives indicated by Flightpath 2050 issued by the E.U. However, due to the challenges related to the realization of this technology and TRL reached, DNLE are more likely implemented in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for testing and evaluation purposes. In the present study, an optimization methodology for the DNLE composite laminate skin and morphing mechanism structure is proposed and applied to a study case represented by the UAS-S45 aircraft. The work starts from the morphing leading edge structure developed by the LARCASE laboratory at ETS Montreal. The results showed that by means of the optimization strategy adopted, the force required on the actuator mechanism is 88% lower than the original design. A significant improvement on the profile smoothness along its section and in the spanwise direction in morphing conditions has been obtained too. However, further investigations are still needed in order to achieve a more appropriate morphing shape. Despite this, it appears from the results obtained that the proposed methodology can be useful to tackle the DNLE design problem in an effective and efficient way. What developed in this work has been conceived to support the investigation of DNLE in the small leading edge profiles typical of the UAS. In this way, an easier procedure for the set up of the design flow, and a decrease in the computational effort for the optimization process can be obtained. An experimental validation of the results obtained is currently being performed at ETS, and future development regards the assessment of the errors of the numeric procedure herein presented respect to real data.

Résumé :
The last few years have brought major changes to regional and local labour markets. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are a promising way to ensure the functionality of the labour market and, at the same time, to support continued growth in employment and strengthen the integration of many marginalised target groups into the labour market through social inclusion and protection. This publication by the European Network on Regional Labour Market Monitoring illuminates the functionalities of AI tools for the improvement of labour market functions, especially with respect to fair and socially sustainable work. It presents known AI solutions and identifies existing gaps in this regard. It is also of interest how public employment services could use AI tools to shape their ‘new’ role as regional and local nodes in labour market monitoring and their consulting role for labour market actors. More than 30 authors from different European countries and beyond describe their experiences and approaches in the context of their use of AI with a special focus on regional and local labour markets, target groups, and specific sectors and industries.

Résumé :
Some mental states seem to be "of" or "about" things or to "say" something. For example, a thought might represent that grass is green, and a visual experience might represent a blue cup. This is intentionality. The aim of this book is to explain this phenomenon. Once we understand intentionality as a phenomenon to be explained, rather than a posit in a theory explaining something else, we can see that there are glaring empirical and in-principle difficulties with currently popular tracking and functional role theories of intentionality, which aim to account for intentionality in terms of tracking relations and functional roles. This book develops an alternative theory, the phenomenal intentionality theory (PIT), on which the source of intentionality is none other than phenomenal consciousness, the subjective, felt, or qualitative aspect of mental life. While PIT avoids the problems that plague tracking and functional role theories, it faces its own challenges in accounting for the rich and complex contents of thoughts and the contents of nonconscious states. In responding to these challenges, this book proposes a novel version of PIT, one on which all intentionality is phenomenal intentionality, though we in some sense represent many non-phenomenal contents by ascribing them to ourselves. This book further argues that phenomenal consciousness is an intrinsic feature of mental life, resulting in a view that is radically internalistic in spirit: Our phenomenally represented contents are literally in our heads, and any non-phenomenal contents we in some sense represent are expressly targeted by us.

Résumé :
Global warming has become a serious threat to the environment as well as human life. The application of renewable and green energy sources has been emphasized in recent years to overcome the energy demand and save the environment. As a competent alternative to renewable energy sources, membrane-based energy generation has attracted the attention of researchers. In the past few decades, the application of advanced functional membranes in green energy production has gained importance. The application of polyelectrolyte membranes in fuel cells has become an emerging technology due to high proton conductivity, excellent thermal, chemical stability, and mechanical strength. Pressure retarded osmosis is also one of the membrane-based energy generation techniques which have been upgraded with significant developments. The various polymeric membranes, both inorganic and organic, have been employed in the energy production processes. In the past few years, the application of biopolymeric membranes made up of chitosan blends has shown excellent progress. The storage of energy also plays an equivalent role in energy production. The application of membranes has a vital role in energy storage batteries. This chapter deals with all the advanced functional membranes for energy production and storage.

Résumé :
In recent years, cities have shown increasing signs of environmental problems due to the negative impacts of urban activities. The degradation and depletion of natural resources, climate change, and development pressure on green areas have become major concerns for cities. In response to these problems, urban planning policies have shifted to a sustainable focus and authorities have begun to develop new strategies for improving the quality of urban ecosystems. An extremely important function of an urban ecosystem is to provide healthy and sustainable environments for both natural systems and communities. Therefore, ecological planning is a functional requirement in the establishment of sustainable built environment. With ecological planning, human needs are supplied while natural resources are used in the most effective and sustainable manner and ecological balance is sustained. Protecting human and environmental health, having healthy ecosystems, reducing environmental pollution and providing green spaces are just a few of the many benefits of ecological planning. In this context, this chapter briefly presents a short overview of the importance of the implementation of ecological planning into sustainable urban development. Furthermore, it presents a conceptual framework for a new methodology for developing sustainable urban ecosystems through ecological planning approach.

In the last 20 years cities have undergone considerable changes. The current phase of expansion, which took place in the absence of demographic pressures, has diluted urban space into functional areas, scattered randomly throughout the area. The authors therefore identify new mobility needs, met mainly by private means, with implications in terms of congestion and air pollution. Sustainable mobility is a priority intervention for the EU. This chapter studies, after a discussion of the importance of sustainable mobility, cycling in Italy from an economic and strategic perspective. Promoting cycling is important for individual health, environmental sustainability, and transport demand management. In Italy, very few people use a bicycle on a regular basis. The analysis relies on national aggregate data as well as case studies of large and small cities in an Italian region.

Dans Post-Oil City Planning for Urban Green Deals Virtual Congress. ISOCARP, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47472/brdx7943.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Many people consider Al Wakrah to be a distinctive settlement for cultural heritage in the State of Qatar. Based on archaeological evidence, the area of Al Wakrah was perhaps the first urban center of Qatar. Originally a fishing and pearling village like the capital city of Doha, globalization and rapid urbanization also characterized the development of Al Wakrah over the last halfcentury, leading to a remarkable transformation in the morphology of the settlement. The paper studies this morphological transformation of Al Wakrah and the consequences for socioeconomic and functional use. In doing so, the paper offers some clarity about the identity and dynamics of Al Wakrah as a traditional heritage district today; specifically, Souq Al Wakrah. We explore this within the context of traditional marketplaces in general, and souqs in the Arab States of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region in particular. The study explores the symbiotic relationship between urban morphology, land use, and function in settlement form. The purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of urban changes and expansion on the use and experience of Souq Wakrah as a public place today. Researchers apply several representational techniques standard in morphological studies, including analysis of urban spatial networks using space syntax. The findings of the paper indicate the design and planning nature of Souq Wakrah as a contemporary heritage re-creation. It contrasts with more straightforward examples of historic preservation and restoration in other traditional marketplaces of Qatar itself and elsewhere in the world. This situation arose due to the nearcomplete demolition of most historic structures in Al Wakrah during the recent past, except for a few isolated examples. However, a few important ‘traces’ of Al Wakrah’s morphological history remain consistent over time, despite the dramatic transformations in the rest of the settlement over time. The paper concludes by discussing the potential implications for design and planning policy in the protection and preservation of historic resources in the State of Qatar. It argues for the critical importance of developing a clear understanding of the relationship between form, function, and the urban context of such places in future preservation projects.

Résumé :
The current manufacturing sector has the objective of maximizing profit by minimizing waste, proper utilization of men, machine and materials. Apart from this, the focus has been on implementing green manufacturing practices in operations. The lean -green topic is an emerging and the new one in the present scenario. The main aim of the green practices is to improve operational activities as well as environmental efficiency. Green practices are concerned with the environmental, social and economic impacts over any organization. Lean manufacturing has been coined by nine wastes. These wastes have an impact on green practices, leading to generation of green wastes. Some of the green waste was excessive resource usage, power usage, pollution, improper health and safety. Lean and green are concurrent manufacturing practices focusing on wastes. The present industrial scenario has been looking into implementing these practices in their operations. A few practices relating to lean-green practices, are integration of lean -green concepts, organization performance analysis, functions, assessment performance and empirical study etc. One of the primary activity of lean-green strategies is showing respect to the workforce. Human factor will be considered as one the main pillars in the lean-green practices. In this research paper a model has been proposed for identification of a Lean-Green Resourced Person (LGRP) for integrating and implementing lean and green practices in a manufacturing industry. Identification of LGRP will help the organization in implementing and executing lean-green strategies into their operations. A multicriteria decision making method has been used for finding the LGRP in the industry. The identification will result in reductions in time consumption during implementation, guiding the industry in a proper way for implementing and integrating the lean-green techniques.

Résumé :
We measured sensitivity to sinusoidal modulation of two equally luminant chromatic sources as a function of physical phase difference. The stimuli were presented in a two-channel Maxwellian view system employing red (625-nm) and green (564-nm) LEDs. Radiance was controlled by voltage-to-frequency converters fed by computer-controlled analog multipliers designed to give a linear response up to 1800 cd. The 2.0° stimulus field with a mean luminance of 900 cd was viewed in a dark surround. Using a method of adjustment, threshold modulation was determined for up to forty phases from 0° to 356°, at thirteen frequencies ranging from 1 to 40 Hz. In any given block of trials, frequency was held constant and phase varied from trial to trial. At high (>13-Hz) and low (<2.8-Hz) frequencies the modulation vs phase functions were symmetric ~0°. At intermediate frequencies the point of symmetry occurred at 10-40°, the exact amount differing among the three subjects.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Theoretical work on color constancy has dwelt on the problem of estimating surface and illuminant chromatic properties in the case where a set of surfaces is viewed under a single illuminant1-5. Maloney and Wandell4 used linear models to describe variation among surface reflectance functions6-9 and variation among illuminants10,11 to establish a general result for this situation: a trichromatic system viewing surfaces under a single unknown illuminant that is represented by three color descriptors can recover two color- constant descriptors per surface. Their remarkable result is incomplete, however. First, it is desirable to recover three or more descriptors per surface, for neither surface color percepts12 nor surface color properties6-9 are described adequately by two-dimensional models. Second, one would prefer the recovery of surface reflectance descriptors to be independent of the choice of a particular model of illumination. The model that describes accurately the daylight illumination environment10,11, for instance, will generally fail to describe other illumination environments such as those found indoors or that presented by the red, green and blue lights used in Land's demonstrations with Mondrians1.

Résumé :
Social, economic, and environmental benefits of sustainable buildings result in increasing demand and supply of green office space and governments adopt green buildings requirements as policy instruments. Effect of public (local, state) policies on construction and diffusion of sustainable buildings have been analyzed in few research (e.g. (Choi 2010a), (R. Simons, Choi, and Simons 2009)), demand for sustainable offices (e.g. (Zieba, Belniak, and Gluszak 2013), motivations for investing (Fuerst and McAllister 2009)(Popescu et al. 2012) were the subject of research but the impact of public policies and tools used by local governments, in the form of development plans and zoning maps, on the location decisions of investors realizing green buildings still requires more insight. The objective of this paper is to verify whether local development plans (zoning maps) facilitate location of sustainable office buildings on sites that are best-choice using the criteria of green buildings’ certification and most beneficial from the point of view of sustainable urban development. Authors assume that local governments would support choice of best sustainable location by investors, as it’s beneficial for local community, economy and environment. Also, we state that real estate developers’ choice of location is the function of firm’s own criteria, zoning map restrictions, availability of land for new developments. This paper proposes a methodology to identify the best areas to locate sustainable offices in Cracow district Zabłocie, using spatial data analysis. Zablocie was selected because the zoning map exists for the whole district and the area - postindustrial district, still provides many sites for new developments and it’s featured by high concentration of sustainable office buildings. The evaluation criteria was based on BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) green building certification categories. The data was collected and processed in ArcGIS. The locations, identified in spatial analysis process, were compared with locations available in Zablocie for commercial (office) developments as indicated by local development plan.

Most of the noise prediction methods, which has already been used, only applicable at low frequency range, below the first transverse duct mode. A developed method at this work, which suggested by Schram, avoided many simplification assumptions and is quite powerful for high Helmholtz numbers, i.e. when the turbulence/body interaction region is acoustically non-compact. By using numerical methods and an appropriate Green function, the method is applied to the prediction of sound in a duct obstructed by a diaphragm. The source fluctuations of the flow field are computed by a large-eddy simulation (LES) and are fed to the following acoustical computation as input data. The predicted power spectrum shows a fairly good agreement with a direct noise computation (DNC) results.

Résumé :
This paper considers the comparative study on added resistance for different methodologies. An accurate prediction of added resistance and resultant power increase becomes an important issue in greenship design. There are several methodologies for the prediction of added resistance, and most of them are based on frequency domain approaches such as slender-body theory or wave Green-function approach. As the time-domain approaches becomes an alternative method for seakeeping analysis, the time-domain approaches are also applicable for added resistance prediction. In this paper, a few approaches have been applied for the prediction of added resistance on different hull forms. The methods to be considered in this study are (i) slender-body method, (ii) Rankine panel methods, (iii) Cartesian-grid-based Euler solver, and (iv) short-wave approximations. Both the far- and near-field formations are considered in the slender-body and Rankine panel methods, while the direct pressure integration is applied for the CFD method. The computational results are validated by comparing them with experimental data on Wigley hull, Series 60 hull, and S175 containership, showing reasonable agreements for all models. The study is extended to the analysis of added resistance in short wavelengths.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The continuous rise in population, urbanization and expansion of cities has triggered a corresponding increase in construction and demolition activity. The frequent collapse of buildings attributed to poor structural design, building decay, and/or use of substandard materials has generated a substantial increase in construction refuse, also referred to as Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste. This waste stream originates from residential, commercial, agricultural, institutional and industrial building projects for new builds, reconstruction, expansion, and refurbishments/rehabilitation. Most studies in Nigeria have generally focused on solid waste management without considering the uniqueness of C&D and giving it the attention needed, in order to achieve sustainable urban spaces that are highly functional, safe, convenient, and livable. This study seeks to investigate the different approaches and processes of C&D waste management in the City of Jos, in the Plateau State of Nigeria. The mix method was adopted for this research whereby quantitative and qualitative data was collected through a structured questionnaire for construction enterprises, as well as face-to-face interviews with the agencies responsible for waste management in the city. A total of 21 construction companies (representing about 10%) were randomly selected for questionnaire administration while interviews were conducted with the Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) and the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) who are responsible for waste management. Investigations revealed that C&D waste consists of heavy and non-degradable materials such as: sheet metal roofing, sand, gravel, concrete, masonry, metal, and wood to mention only a few. The construction companies are solely responsible for: the collection, storage, transportation and disposal of wastes generated from their activities. Approximately 60-70% of the C&D waste materials are either reused, recycled or resold, while the remaining residual waste is indiscriminately disposed. Although the PEPSA and JMDB are responsible for waste management, their focus has been on establishing solid non-hazardous waste infrastructure systems, policies and plans. The absence of records of the quantity of C&D waste generated, the lack of financial data, and the omission of policies and plans for the C&D waste stream has resulted in a missed opportunity for a comprehensive and sustainable waste management strategy for the City and the state. To protect public health, valuable resources, and natural ecosystems, it is recommended that the C&D waste stream be included as part of the state’s waste management program, in consideration of the growing construction and demolition activity, by including C&D policies and guidelines.

Résumé :
We present a new Hamiltonian formulation for the non-linear evolution of surface gravity waves over a variable impermeable bottom. The derivation is based on Luke’s variational principle and the use of an exact (convergent up to the boundaries) infinite-series representation of the unknown wave potential, in terms of a system of prescribed vertical functions (explicitly dependent on the local depth and the local free-surface elevation) and unknown horizontal modal amplitudes. The key idea of this approach is the introduction of two unconventional modes ensuring a rapid convergence of the modal series. The fully nonlinear water-wave problem is reformulated as two evolution equations, essentially equivalent with the Zakharov-Craig-Sulem formulation. The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator (DtN) over arbitrary bathymetry is determined by means of a few first modes, the two unconventional ones being most important. While this formulation is exact, its numerical implementation, even for general domains, is not much more involved than that of the various simplified models (Boussinesq, Green-Nagdhi) widely used in engineering applications. The efficiency of this formulation is demonstrated by the excellent agreement of the numerical and experimental results for the case of the classical Beji-Battjes experiment. A more complicated bathymetry is also studied.

Résumé :
Redox absorbance changes in living cells (monolayer of HeLa) under laser irradiation at 633, 670, and 820 nm have been studied by the method of multichannel registration in spectral range 530–890 nm. It has been found that the irradiation causes changes in the absorption spectrum of the cells in two regions, near 754–795 nm (maxima at 757, 775, and 795 nm) and near 812-873 nm (maxima at 819, 837, 858, and 873 nm). Changes occur in band parameters (peak positions, width, and integral intensity). Virtually no changes occur in the red spectral region and a few changes are recorded in the green region near 556–565 nm. The results obtained evidence that cytochrome c oxidase becomes more oxidized (which means that the oxidative metabolism is increased) due to irradiation at all wavelengths used. The results of present experiment support the suggestion (Karu, Lasers Life Sci., 2:53, 1988) that the mechanism of low-power laser therapy on cellular level is based on the electronic excitation of chromophores in cytochrome c oxidase which modulates redox status of the molecule and enhances its functional activity.
