Résumé :
Abstract The Negative Compatibility Effect (NCE) is a reversal in priming effects that can occur when a masked arrow prime is followed by an arrow target at a long stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA). To test the explanation that the NCE is actually a positive priming effect elicited by mask features associated with the prime-opposed response, we devise masks that always point in the same direction as the prime, eliminating all antiprime features. We find large positive priming effects for arrow primes without masks and for arrow masks without primes. When a neutral mask is introduced, priming effects turn negative at long SOAs. In the critical case where the mask is an arrow in the same direction as the prime, the prime does not add to the positive priming effect from the mask shape, but instead strongly diminishes it and induces response errors even though all stimuli point in the same direction. No such feature-free inhibition is seen when arrows are replaced by color stimuli. We conclude that even though response activation by stimulus features plays a role in the NCE, there is a strong inhibitory component (though perhaps not in all feature domains) that is not based on visual features.

Résumé :
Decision Support Systems (DSS) frequently have multiple decision aid (DA) features, causing users to engage in exclusive choice behavior; i.e., choice between alternative DA features that results in one feature being used to the exclusion of all others. We hypothesize that: (1) users choose the least effective (least accurate) DA feature in certain predictability environments; (2) users choose the DA feature that they believe they are most competent with; and (3) choice between DA features improves performance compared to those assigned the same DA feature. We test these hypotheses in an experiment in which 164 participants act as loan officers who chose between two decision aids (a database aid and a regression aid). The results support our hypotheses. Users employed a choice heuristic that caused them to choose the least effective DA feature for the task more than or as often as the most effective DA feature. Results also indicate a positive relationship between perceived competence and DA feature choice, and the positive effect of DA choice. We conclude by describing the insights provided by the results into the heuristics of information technology choice.

Résumé :
The Dimension-Action model maintains that response selection in the visual system is modular, such that response selection based on a target’s feature occurs within modules. This study suggests that response selection processes based on a target’s spatial location occur within modules as well, where spatial locations are coded along with the feature information. From this perspective, the typical Simon effect, in which interference occurs between a target’s feature and its spatial location, occurs within modules. This study explored whether the unique characteristic of the spatial Simon, namely, its reduction with increased reaction time is typical of spatial intra-dimension but not of spatial cross-dimension Simon effects, using the accessory Simon task. Experiment 1 demonstrated that intra-dimension Simon effects were reduced with increased reaction time, a reduction that was modulated by the task relevance of the distractor. In contrast, cross-dimension accessory Simon effects were positive and increased with reaction time. Experiment 2 demonstrated that intra-dimension Simon effects were not reduced when space was conveyed symbolically by arrows. Overall, the study suggests that interference in the accessory Simon task is influenced not only by the nature of the irrelevant spatial information but also by the modular locus of the targets and distractors.

Résumé :
Motivationally relevant stimuli benefit from strengthened sensory processing. It is unclear, however, if motivational value of positive and negative valence has similar or dissociable effects on early visual processing. Moreover, whether these perceptual effects are task-specific, stimulus-specific, or more generally feature-based is unknown. In this study, we compared the effects of positive and negative motivational value on early sensory processing using ERPs. We tested the extent to which these effects could generalize to new task contexts and to stimuli sharing common features with the motivationally significant ones. At the behavioral level, stimuli paired with positive incentives were learned faster than stimuli paired with neutral or negative outcomes. The ERP results showed that monetary loss elicited higher neural activity in V1 (at the C1 level) compared with reward, whereas the latter influenced postperceptual processing stages (P300). Importantly, the early loss-related effect generalized to new contexts and to new stimuli with common features, whereas the later reward effects did not spill over to the new context. These results suggest that acquired negative motivational salience can influence early sensory processing by means of plastic changes in feature-based processing in V1.

Résumé :
Although previous research has documented a host of negative consequences of job insecurity, workplace interpersonal relationships have rarely been considered. This omission might be caused by the application of broad stress theories to the job insecurity literature without taking a nuanced perspective to understand the nature of job insecurity. To address this issue, we conceptualized job insecurity as a threat to employee social acceptance by their employer. This conceptualization, therefore, allows us to apply the multimotive model of social rejection to investigate a previously-overlooked outcome of job insecurity—workplace friendships. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between both job feature insecurity and job loss insecurity with workplace friendships. Based on stress coping theory and the fundamental differences between job feature insecurity and job loss insecurity, we further proposed that employees’ tendency to engage in positive gossip buffers the negative impact of job feature insecurity on workplace friendships, whereas employees’ tendency to engage in negative gossip buffers the negative impact of job loss insecurity on workplace friendships. Data collected from 286 working adults from Mturk supported our hypotheses. Our study opens the door for future research to take a more nuanced approach when examining nontraditional consequences of job insecurity.

A geomerric task was designed to investigate the effect of the frequency of irrelevant features in learning a conjunctive concept. One hundred algebra students were assigned to one of four treatment groups formed by crossing the two independent variables of feature frequency (equal or high) and sequence type (positive instances only or mixed positive and negative instances). The frequency of irrelevant features affected the usefulness of negative instances. When six irrelevant features were equally likely, positive instances were more helpful in learning, whereas when three irrelevant features predominated, mixed positive and negative instances were more helpful. The results may explain the difference between the findings of psychological and educational research on the usefulness of negative instances.

This study aims to determine the magnitude of the influence of the intensity of the Instagram stories feature on the level of intimacy of Interpersonal communication and to find out how the influence of selfopenness on the level of intimacy of Interpersonal communication on Instagram story users on Instagram. The method used is an explanatory method with the positivism paradigm, this is used to examine the extent to which variations in a factor are related to other factors. Then the data analysis technique uses simple linear regression. The results of this study show that t count > from t table which is 3,844 > 2,348 can be interpreted as Ho rejected and Ha accepted. Then the result of the coefficient of determination (R2) showed a number of 0.189, which means that the intensity of use of the close friends feature by some users had an influence of 18.9% on the level of intimacy of interpersonal communication, an influence that was seen to be small and could influence other users to actively communicate while the rest was influenced by other factors that were not included in this study by 81.1%. Thus, this shows that the intensity of the close friends feature has a positive influence on the level of intimacy of interpersonal communication and also the encouragement of self-openness from users of the close friends feature to the selected list of friends in increasing interpersonal communication with other users

The binary pnictide semimetals have attracted considerable attention due to their fantastic physical properties that include topological effects, negative magnetoresistance, Weyl fermions, and large non-saturation magnetoresistance. In this paper, we have successfully grown the high-quality V1 – δ Sb2 single crystals by Sb flux method and investigated their electronic transport properties. A large positive magnetoresistance that reaches 477% under a magnetic field of 12 T at T = 1.8 K was observed. Notably, the magnetoresistance showed a cusp-like feature at the low magnetic fields and such feature weakened gradually as the temperature increased, which indicated the presence of a weak antilocalization effect (WAL). In addition, based upon the experimental and theoretical band structure calculations, V1 – δ Sb2 is a research candidate for a flat band.

Résumé :
Abstract The effects of manipulating configural and feature information on the face recognition process were investigated by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) from five electrode sites (Fz, Cz, Pz, T5, T6), while 17 European subjects performed an own-race and other-race face recognition task. A series of upright faces were presented in a study phase, followed by a test phase where subjects indicated whether inverted and upright faces were studied or novel via a button press response. An inversion effect, illustrating the disruption of upright configural information, was reflected in accuracy measures and in greater lateral N2 amplitude to inverted faces, suggesting that structural encoding is harder for inverted faces. An own-race advantage was found, which may reflect the use of configural encoding for the more frequently experienced own-race faces, and feature-based encoding for the less familiar other-race faces, and was reflected in accuracy measures and ERP effects. The midline N2 was larger to configurally encoded faces (i. e., own-race and upright), possibly suggesting configural encoding involves more complex processing than feature-based encoding. An N400-like component was sensitive to feature manipulations, with greater amplitude to other-race than own-race faces and to inverted than upright faces. This effect was interpreted as reflecting increased activation of incompatible representations activated by a feature-based strategy used in processing of other-race and inverted faces. The late positive complex was sensitive to configural manipulation with larger amplitude to other-race than own-race faces, and was interpreted as reflecting the updating of an own-race norm used in face recognition, to incorporate other-race information.

Résumé :
“Freemium” is a popular business model adopted by the vendors of digital products, and it has aroused extensive attention in the academia. The existing research studies commonly explore the business model from the perspective of network effect, but lack the attention to the small-world features of network effect. In order to explore the effect of the small-world network, the current work presents a two-period optimization model of monopolist. The optimization model is incorporating with the Freemium model and the small-world feature of consumer base. The optimization model is solved analytically, and the comparative static results show that if the integrating network effect caused by the strong and weak relationship group is sufficiently high (or the small-world feature of the user group is prominent), the user group network exerts a positive effect; if the integrating network effect is not sufficiently high (or the small-world feature of the user group is not prominent), the user group network exerts a negative effect; especially, if the integrating network effect is low or moderate, the premium product is supposed to be free for the consumers. The conclusions enrich the understanding on the operation of digital products firms in the academia and industry.

AbstractResearch suggests that the clinical and therapeutic effects of psychedelics are related to their ability to induce a mystical-type experience. One particularly interesting feature of the psychedelic mystical experience is the entity encounter - people who take psychedelics sometimes describe meetings with seemingly autonomous entities which appear to possess intelligence and agency. While there has been little empirical research into psychedelic entity phenomena, qualitative studies and anecdotal reports suggest that entity encounters can have profound and lasting positive after-effects. Based on the existing data, this article argues that there is value in exploring the therapeutic potential of psychedelic entity encounters. Specifically, it proposes three possible ways that entity encounters might mediate the therapeutic effect of the psychedelic mystical experience.

This study investigated the optimal conditions under which foreign language learning takes place using a smartphone. The authors proposed that two factors, chunking and imagery, would increase language learning. On the basis of previous findings, they formulated three hypotheses: (a) the use of images will have a positive effect on learning English sentences; (b) the use of chunks will have a positive effect on learning English sentences; and (c) the combined use of images and chunks will have a greater positive effect on learning English sentences than either feature alone. A total of 92 Korean seventh graders participated in this study. To examine the learning effect of chunking (i.e., sentence segmentation unit) and imagery (i.e., visual aid) in an experimental setting, they produced a smartphone learning application that incorporated the two methods. The authors measured learning effect with respect to lexical memory retention (i.e., word retrieval ability) and word order composition (i.e., ability to arrange words according to standard English syntax). The results show that the main effects of both chunking and imagery were significant and that the interaction effect between the two on lexical memory retention was also significant. The interaction effect was greater in the delayed effect measurement than in the immediate effect measurement. These findings suggest optimal conditions for designing a smartphone-based, self-learning application.

AbstractWe present new evidence on financial literacy and retirement preparation in the Netherlands based on two surveys conducted before and after the onset of the financial crisis. We document that while financial knowledge did not increase from 2005 to 2010, in 2010 significantly more individuals report having thought about their retirement. Using information on financial conditions and financial knowledge of relatives, we find a positive causal effect of financial literacy on retirement preparation. Employing the panel feature of our dataset, we show that the effect of financial knowledge on retirement planning is bound to be positive.

The study utilized chest X-ray images to segregate COVID-19 positive cases among healthy individuals by exploiting several combinational structures of image filtering, feature-extraction techniques, and machine learning algorithms. It analyzed the effects of three noise removal filters and two feature-extraction techniques on performance of several machine learning and deep-learning-based classifiers. The proposed schemes first remove unnecessary noise using a conservative smoothing filter, Crimmins speckle removal, and Gaussian filter. It then employs linear discriminant analysis (LDA) as linear method and principal component analysis (PCA) as non-linear feature-extraction technique to extract highly discriminant feature sets. Finally, it uses these feature sets to train various classification models, including convolutional neural network (CNN), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression (LG). Evidently, the proposed conservative smoothing filter with single peak to maintain symmetry in horizontal and vertical directions for enhancement of image, along with LDA and SVM, secured an overall classification accuracy of 99.93%. Experimental results show that, besides achieving high accuracies, the incorporation of feature-extraction techniques significantly reduces the computational time of the proposed model.

Résumé :
With increasing amounts of information, the image information received by people also increases exponentially. To perform fine-grained categorization and recognition of images and visual calculations, this study combines the Visual Geometry Group Network 16 model of convolutional neural networks and the vision attention mechanism to build a multi-level fine-grained image feature categorization model. Finally, the TensorFlow platform is utilized to simulate the fine-grained image classification model based on the visual attention mechanism. The results show that in terms of accuracy and required training time, the fine-grained image categorization effect of the multi-level feature categorization model constructed by this study is optimal, with an accuracy rate of 85.3% and a minimum training time of 108 s. In the similarity effect analysis, it is found that the chi-square distance between Log Gabor features and the degree of image distortion show a strong positive correlation; in addition, the validity of this measure is verified. Therefore, through the research in this study, it is found that the constructed fine-grained image categorization model has higher accuracy in image recognition categorization, shorter training time, and significantly better performance in similar feature effects, which provides an experimental reference for the visual computing of fine-grained images in the future.

Memory training is one way to achieve improvement in the quality of life and to prolong the independence of older people. Our contribution is a trial with one treatment group (N = 152) which concentrated on the effect of a basic memory training course available nationwide in the Czech Republic. The sample included nondemented, community-dwelling senior citizens. An important feature of the study is the inclusion of significant others who reported their observations. Results show that the training had a positive effect on the self-cognitions of the participants (rating of memory in general and ability to learn new things). The positive effect on memory and self-confidence in one’s own abilities was also reported by the significant others.

Résumé :
Abstract The success of new incongruent products hinges largely on whether consumers can efficiently make sense of the product. One of the most efficient ways that people make sense of new objects is through feature-based association. Such associations often incorporate an enabler (e.g., the color green) to help make sense of a semantically related feature (e.g., vitamin enriched). Evidence from three studies suggests that marketers can strategically incorporate enablers in product design to help consumers make sense of an extremely incongruent feature. As a result, consumers tend to reflect more favorably on the product. Furthermore, the authors find that even if the enabler itself is incongruent and leads to lower evaluations on its own, when combined with an atypical feature the effect can still be positive. Thus, a small but semantically meaningful adjustment in design can help marketers successfully introduce extremely incongruent innovations.

Résumé :
General statistical properties of solar activity cycles during the period AD 1823–1996—including the Gnevyshev-Ohl and Waldmeier effects as well as an amplitude-period effect—were analyzed using Wolf number, group sunspot number, and extended total sunspot area series. It was found out that the Gnevyshev-Ohl effect GO2 (the positive correlation between intensity of the even cycles 2N and intensity of the odd cycles 2N+1) and the Waldmeier effect W2 (the anticorrelation between rise times of sunspot cycles and their amplitudes) are the most universal and robust features of the solar cycle. Other statistical relations were found appreciably sensitive to the selection of solar index, the interval of analysis, and the way of the cycle feature determination.

Résumé :
Following the results of recent studies on the creative use of smart technologies in urban and university settings, there is a growing number of promising research areas under smart university as an umbrella term. Starting from the differentiation between six standard “smart” dimensions in the university, the paper focuses on one smart university feature in particular – it explores the level and the relation of smart governance to the attitudes towards university management, fellow students, and Perceived External Prestige (PEP) as antecedents of university affective commitment. The paper presents multivariate analysis results based on the feedback from over 400 students. Participants were first-year students from the second biggest university in Croatia. While the effect of smart governance on the positive attitude towards university management is found to be positive and significant, the effect of the perception of university management on students' university commitment is low and not significant in the given context.

Résumé :
Diverse action costs are an essential feature of many real-world planning applications. Some recent studies have shown that diversity of action costs makes planning more difficult, and that searching using unit action costs can outperform searching the same domain with diverse action costs. In this paper, we provide experimental evidence and theoretical analysis showing that search can also benefit from action cost diversity. We show that on several IPC problems cost diversity has a positive effect (reduces search effort). We then present a theoretical analysis establishing that these positive cases are not accidental. Our main result is a "No Free Lunch" theorem showing that any negative effects of cost diversity are always perfectly counterbalanced by positive effects. Our theoretical analysis also shows that it is advantageous to have a strongly concentrated distribution of solution costs. In many domains, unit costs will give rise to a more concentrated distribution than diverse costs, but we give an example typifying domains in which the opposite is the case.

Résumé :
The influence of exercise-induced arousal on the processing of visual information by three age groups was tested. Subjects were required to perform the Treisman visual detection task both at rest and during a steady-state walk at 75% of their maximum heart rate. The expected age differences in perceptual performance were apparent. The detection performance of 8-year-olds was poorer than that of 11-year-olds and adults. Detection of conjoined feature targets, with increases in the array size, showed a decrement in comparison to single feature targets. Subjects responded more quickly at all levels of distraction when a target was present while they were exercising. The results supported certain elements of Treisman's feature integration theory. This study has provided evidence that an exercise stress equivalent to 75 % of maximum heart rate had a positive effect on the visual perceptual performance of all groups tested. Both array size and feature conditions interacted with age. This suggests that children are not able to avoid irrelevant information as effectively as adults. In addition, children are differentially affected by different target characteristics in the detection task.

Résumé :
Collaboration is regarded as an effective approach to improve the efficiency of research resources and reduce risks in innovation activities. Collaboration breadth is an important feature of collaborative extent. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse its role between R&D subsidy and innovation and to explore its direct and indirect ties to innovation. The paper is based on government-funded research projects, and the results show that R&D subsidy and collaboration breadth of organizations have positive direct effect on innovation output. Meanwhile, R&D subsidy has positive effect to collaboration breadth. However, the linkage of collaboration breadth of researchers on innovation output is uncertainty. That is, the direct effect is positive, while the indirect effect is negative. It may suggest that collaboration breadth of researchers and innovation output may be affected by other factors, such as knowledge sharing or diffusion. Our contribution is to extend the theory of collaboration breadth and to suggest discussion of the role of knowledge in collaboration breadth.

Résumé :
Differentiation has become a durable feature of European integration but we know little about its effects on citizens. Does differentiated integration improve the democratic quality of the European Union and strengthen citizens’ support – or does it promote political divides and foster citizens’ alienation from European integration? This article develops a theoretical argument on the positive attitudinal effects of differentiated integration, contending that differentiation accommodates heterogeneous preferences in a diverse EU and strengthens citizens’ ownership of European integration. A quasi-experimental analysis of public opinion of the 2015 Danish Justice and Home Affairs opt-out referendum demonstrates that the public vote increased citizens’ EU efficacy, indeed. Eurosceptic voters in particular strengthen their belief that their individual voice counts in EU politics, suggesting that differentiation can have a positive effect on the perceived democratic quality of the EU.

Résumé :
Wild berry is an excellent source of phytonutrients and/or bioactive compounds associated with significant therapeutic properties, so that they have been utilized in folk medicine and traditional nutrition throughout centuries. Multiple health-promoting effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-heart and coronary disease properties were attributed to such wild berries. It has also been proved that berries could feature antimicrobial effects that could be of a great importance for the prevention of food-feed poisoning and fighting back antibiotic resistance. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial properties of lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) crude and ethanolic extracts prepared from fruits obtained from the spontaneous flora of Eastern Carpathian Mountains situated in Transylvania. The antimicrobial effect of crude and alcoholic extracts were assessed on four Gram-negative, five Gram-positive bacteria and one yeast species using the agar diffusion method. The studied bacteria can cause food or feed spoilage and foodborne diseases. Our results indicate the significant inhibitory effect of lingonberry extracts in the case of Gram-negative bacteria like Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella Hartford, while among Gram-positive bacteria the strongest inhibitory effect was observed for Bacillus species like B. cereus, B. subtilis, B. mojavensis and Micrococcus luteus. The raspberry and blackberry extracts featured milder inhibitory effects in the case of the studied bacteria species. Furthermore, we have studied the crude or ethanolic extract combinations associated antimicrobial effects synergistic/additive or antagonistic properties. Interestingly, the triple and double ethanolic extract mixes had stronger antimicrobial properties, whereas the crude extract mixes showed relatively reduced effects, if any. Our results indicate that the antimicrobial activity of studied fruit extracts obtained from wild berries can vary upon the applied extraction method and their combination formulae, so that all these considerations must be taken into account when such fruit extracts are considered for foodstuff development.

This paper uses supervised machine learning (sentiment analysis) to analyze the sentiments of social media information in the P2P lending market. After segmentation, filtering, feature word extraction, and model training of the text information captured by Python, the sentiments of media and social media information were calculated to examine the effect of media and social media sentiments on default probability and cost of capital of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms in China (2015–2019). We find that only positive changes in media and social media sentiment have significantly negative effects on the platform’s default probability and cost of capital, while negative changes in sentiment do not have any effects. We conclude the existence of an asymmetric effect of media and social media sentiments in the Chinese peer-to-peer lending market.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTWe have previously examined the mechanism of antimicrobial peptides on the outer membrane of vaccinia virus. We show here that the formulation of peptides LL37 and magainin-2B amide in polysorbate 20 (Tween 20) results in greater reductions in virus titer than formulation without detergent, and the effect is replicated by substitution of polysorbate 20 with high-ionic-strength buffer. In contrast, formulation with polysorbate 20 or high-ionic-strength buffer has the opposite effect on bactericidal activity of both peptides, resulting in lesser reductions in titer for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Circular dichroism spectroscopy shows that the differential action of polysorbate 20 and salt on the virucidal and bactericidal activities correlates with the α-helical content of peptide secondary structure in solution, suggesting that the virucidal and bactericidal activities are mediated through distinct mechanisms. The correlation of a defined structural feature with differential activity against a host-derived viral membrane and the membranes of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria suggests that the overall helical content in solution under physiological conditions is an important feature for consideration in the design and development of candidate peptide-based antimicrobial compounds.

Résumé :
At present, most of the research on academic emotions focuses on the concept, current situation, and relevance. There are not many researches on the application of artificial intelligence-based neural network facial expression recognition technology in practical teaching. With reference to image-based big data, this research integrates the application of artificial intelligence facial expression recognition technology with the research on educational theory and applies information technology to the actual teaching process, in order to promote the optimization of the teaching process and improve the learning effect. Method. A Hadoop cluster consisting of 3 nodes is built on the Linux system, and the environment required for Opencv execution is compiled for each node, which provides support for subsequent parallel optimization, feature extraction, feature fusion, and recognition of student facial images. The image data type and input and output format based on MapReduce framework are designed, and the image data is optimized by means of serialized files. The color features, texture features, and Sift features of students’ facial images and common distractors were analyzed. A parallel extraction framework of student facial image features is designed, and based on this, the student facial image feature extraction under Hadoop platform is implemented. This paper proposes a dynamic sequential facial expression recognition method that combines shallow and deep features with an attention mechanism. The relative position of facial landmarks and local area texture features based on FACS represent shallow-level features. At the same time, the structure of ALexNet is improved to extract the deep features of sequence images to express high-level semantic features. The effectiveness of the facial expression recognition system is improved by introducing three attention mechanisms: self-attention, weight-attention, and convolutional attention. Results/Discussion. Through the analysis of the teaching effect, we found that when teachers can obtain the correct student’s academic mood, they can intervene on the students’ positive academic mood. The purpose of the intervention is to improve the positive academic emotions of students. After the students receive the intervention, their academic emotions are also improved and are positively correlated with their academic performance. Through the analysis of teaching effect, the research can achieve the predetermined goal. From the specific teaching effect of this study, it is concluded that in classroom teaching, teachers should devote energy to intervene in students’ positive academic emotions, in order to improve students’ positive academic emotions, which will improve students’ academic performance and teaching.
