Résumé :
The gradual reduction of water reserves for irrigation has become a worldwide concern. To improve the irrigation of processing tomato, we conducted a study to evaluate a system that monitors both plant water status and soil moisture levels (PlaSoMan) compared to an evapotraspirometric method (IrriMan) and an empirical farmer’s management (FarMan) in a two-year field trial. The results showed that PlaSoMan saved around 30% and 7.5% of water, with a yield loss of only 10% and 2.5% compared to FarMan and IrriMan, respectively. Thus, PlaSoMan showed satisfactory irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) over the two years. Moreover, IrriMan and PlaSoMan had lower blue water requirement (BWR) values than FarMan. Finally, PlaSoMan reached the highest value of the yield quality indicator, which combined total yield and brix degree. Thus, the new system, which assesses both plant water status and soil moisture levels, appears to be associated with high-quality and water-friendly tomato production representing an efficient solution for areas with limited water resources.

Objective: To determine the correlation between cervical vertebral maturation stages on a lateral cephalo-gram and Dimerijan canine calcification stages on an Orthopan-tomogram for assessment of skeletal maturity Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Orthodontics Department, Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry (AFID), Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Dec 2021 to Apr 2022. Methodology: The subjects of either gender, aged 9 to 16 years, in good physical, mental and oral health were included in the study. Two radiographs, a lateral cephalogram and Orthopantomogram, were taken for each patient. Hassel and Farman and Demirjian stages were used to asses skeletal maturity and canine classification, respectively. Results: The mean age of the sample was 13.29±1.86 years. The Hassel and Farman CVM stages on a lateral cephalometric radiograph and Dimerijan canine calcification stages on a panoramic radiograph showed a significant positive correlation (r= 0.785, p= 0.000) Conclusion: There is a high correlation between CVM stages by Hassel and Farman and Dimerijan canine calcification stages to assess skeletal maturity. Therefore, any of these radiographs can be employed to assess the skeletal maturity status of the patient without exposing the patient to additional radiographic radiation. Keywords: Cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stages, Canine calcification stages, Dental maturity, Skeletal maturity.

Résumé :
Data on the content of chlorophyll in tea leaves are given. The place of research is the area of the Khanbulan village of the Lankaran Regional Scientific Center. The synthesis of chlorophyll in the leaves of the tea plant is activated in spring, and at the end of summer the intensity decreases. The environmental factors of the atmosphere, especially the rise in temperature, cause some harm to tea leaves. The tea plant tolerates 40°C heat and develops under optimal conditions. At temperatures above this level, burns of varying degrees occur on the tea leaf, brown spots are observed. Varieties were used on the experimental site: Azerbaijan-2; FAQ-22; FAQ-19; Farman pink and Farman tea. The process of photosynthesis, heat resistance, water-holding capacity of tea leaves, as well as the explanation of the resistance of the tea plant to environmental factors were also studied.

The discovery by Farman et al. (1985) of a large springtime depletion of ozone over Halley Bay, Antarctica and its subsequent confirmation by satellite observations as a large scale progressive phenomenon led to intensive theoretical and experimental investigation to determine the cause of this potentially dangerous effect. Many of the theoretical approaches centered on modifications of stratospheric chemistry by polar stratospheric clouds. Several experimental expeditions were mounted to Antarctica to make observations to verify or disprove the theories.

Résumé :
According to Romania’s National Rural Development Programme, the socio-economic situation of the rural environment has a large number of weaknesses – among which low access to financial resources for small entrepreneurs and new business initiatives in rural areas and poorly developed entrepreneurial culture, characterized by a lack of basic managerial knowledge – but also a large number of opportunities – among which access of the rural population to lifelong learning and entrepreneurial skills development programmes and entrepreneurs’ access to financial instruments. The population in rural areas depends mainly on agricultural activities which give them subsistence living conditions. The gap between rural and urban areas is due to low income levels and employment rates, hence the need to obtain additional income for the population employed in subsistence and semi-subsistence farming, especially in the context of the depopulation trend. At the same time, the need to stimulate entrepreneurship in rural areas is high and is at a resonance with the need to increase the potential of rural communities from the perspective of landscape, culture, traditional activities and local resources. A solution could be to turn vegetal and / or animal farms into social farms – farms on which people with disabilities (but also adolescents and young people with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicide, and alexithymia issues) might find a “foster” family, bed and meals in a natural, healthy environment, and share the farm’s activities with the farmer and the farmer’s family: “committing to a regular day / days and times for a mutually agreed period involves complying with any required health and safety practices (including use of protective clothing and equipment), engaging socially with the farm family members and other people working on and around the farm, and taking on tasks which would include working on the land, taking care of animals, or helping out with maintenance and other physical work”

Résumé :
The detection of the Antarctic ozone hole by Farman et all has led to increased interest in obtaining data at high latitudes on the altitude distribution of many of the constituents involved in the photochemistry of the ozone layer. Data concerning the altitude profile of constituents at stratospheric altitudes is generally obtained using instruments flown on large balloons. Launch and recovery of the instrumentation flown on such balloons at remote sites is difficult. In order to reduce these difficulties we have developed small grating spectrometer system which can be flown on small balloons. HNO3is of particular interest in high latitude photochemistry since it is involved in the heterogeneous reactions occurring during the winter. The spectrometer was designed specifically to obtain data on HNO3however the spectral region scanned (8μ to 13μ) includes features due to CH4, N2O, O3, F12 and F11. The system is used to measure the atmospheric spectral emission and its change with altitude as the balloon ascends. The change in spectral radiance with altitude is used to obtain profile data on the constituents of interest.

Résumé :
The social structure and physical form of the state-owned farm in north-east China Xiujie Li, Hongpeng Fu, Meng Yang College of Urban and Environmental Sciences. Peking University. Beijing. China. 100871 E-mail: 1400013234@pku.edu.cn, issacfuhongpeng@163.com, shuangzizhixin@163.com Keywords: state-owned farm, policy, social structure, physical form, urban morphology Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space State-owned farms in north-east China are numerous and large in size. They have played an important role in the reclamation and guarding of the frontier in China. Their physical form is sensitive to government policy. Following the historical development of a particular farm, an examination is made of how its social structure and physical form have been influenced by the policies of different periods. The development process has experienced three stages since this farm’s founding. There has been a change from ‘farmers farming together on the land which belongs to the whole farm’ to ‘farmers farming together on the land which belongs to the companies of the farm’, and then ‘farmers farming severally on the land’. The physical form of the farm has been influenced by the policies in different historical periods. Important aspects of these policies include industrial structure, population structure, land ownership, and town and country planning. This study provides a basis for future urban morphological research. References Conzen, M.R.G. Résumé :
The farming of deer (Cervidae family) has increased globally during the last decades, both in the number of farming operations and the economic output. The increasing interest of consumers in the so-called "freerange products" is reflected in the worldwide development of wild animal farming. Deer are farmed on multiple continents for multiple markets including products such as venison, velvet, urine and antlers. New Zealand is by far the largest exporter of deer meat (venison) and products in the world. Venison equates to 91 percent of the total volume of their deer products exported, however is just over 58 percent of the value. In the United States of America (USA) deer farming as alternative agricultural pursuit is a promising way to preserve the traditional rural way of life while taking advantage of a booming industry. In Europe, production and consumption data for farmed deer are scarce. An exception could be the report of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) 10 years ago. It stated that approximately 280.000 deer, predominantly Red deer (Cervus elaphus) and Fallow deer (Dama dama) are farmed in Europe, but less than half of these are slaughtered annually. In Serbia and throughout Europe, venison from deer has increased in popularity and market value owing to its high nutritional value, excellent eating attributes, environmental sustainability, and deep cultural roots. Concomitantly, cattle production has become less profitable and production has decreased over the last two decades leading to protests and economic stagnation in rural Serbia. The low labour regime for deer farming (1 hour work/ per day) means that it can easily complement other livestock and arable enterprises. Dairy cattle farms, with existing buildings, are ideally suited for conversion to deer. In the future, deer farming will increase in Central-, Southeast Europe; smaller farms tend to fallow deer - bigger farms to red deer. Venison is an emerging agro-industry throughout Europe and deer farming has the potential to bolster declining agricultural markets in Serbia. Currently in Serbia all venison is derived from hunted animals, farming does not yet occur. The challenge in Serbia is therefore to harmonize production, regulation and markets with the European Union while making the Serbian venison market equitable, sustainable and profitable. Regulations must be harmonized with European Union, educational programming for deer farmers need to be developed, and venison markets need to be created. As an example, in the Animal welfare law in Serbia it is not present any definition of deer or wild game farm. Consequently, there are no guidelines about the conditions of accommodation, housing, feeding, management and handling. Also, in the Regulation about animal transport there is a lack of rules about the transport of wildlife (or game animals) as well as on the provision of relevant certificate of competence for drivers or handlers. National legislation about meat production in Serbia should consistently define "small quantities", "local sales" and "direct supply to the final consumer" for the purposes of supply of in-fur carcasses.

Résumé :
Poland is a country with significant potential for the development of organic farming. This is due to the possession of rural areas characterized by favorable natural and productive conditions. The advantages of Polish agriculture include relatively clean environment, low chemicals consumption, large labor resources and relatively low labor costs. The main objective of conducted research was to present factors determining the leading of organic farms in the conditions of fragmented agriculture in south Poland. The research was conducted in the Malopolska Voivodeship in 2017. Source material for analysis was primary information collected using PAPI method. In the survey participated 50 certified organic farms chosen by using purposive method of sample selection. In the area structure of surveyed organic farms dominated farms from 5.1 ha to 10 ha. The most popular direction of agricultural production on farms was the growing vegetables. Owners of organic farms as one of the main reasons for moving the farm from conventional to organic systems, considered the possibility of obtaining subsidies for one hectare of cultivation. These subsidies provide them financial support especially in the first years of operation on the market. The least important reason for transformation a farm from conventional to organic system was the factor associated with the reduction of environmental pollution as a result of the change in system of farming. As one of the advantages of running a organic farm, producers pointed the possibility of selecting disease-resistant plant and animal species and creating additional workplaces. On the other hand, as a basic disadvantage of organic farming, farmers pointed out the difficulties in finding market for the products from the farm. Most farm owners cooperate with various organizations connected with ecology. Very popular among them are also different kind of training courses, which are aimed at expanding knowledge of organic production. At the same time the educational activity of the surveyed farms is very low. Only in a few farms was conducted educational activity for children or people interested in ecology.

Résumé :
Due to the specific features of the land factor, under market conditions, there is a tendency towards income deprivation of farms in relation to their surroundings. One way to improve this situation is to create a system of market institutions for farmer-recipient transactions. The issue of the position of the agricultural producer in the food supply chain is widely described in the literature on the subject. Nevertheless, practical analyses showing the real impact of the marketing position on economic results of farm are still rare. Therefore, the aim of this article is to assess the relationship between market integration and agricultural selling prices and, as a consequence, the level of global output and household income. The analysis is based on primary data from surveys of over 700 small-scale family farms in Poland. The choice of small-scale farms was deliberate, as these entities are the most discriminated against in the food supply chain. Explaining this process is key to improving the economic situation of small-scale farming and constitutes a premise for the objectives of agricultural policy and creating business strategy. The results of the research indicate that there is a positive correlation between the level of integration of an agricultural holding and sales prices for selected groups of agricultural products. This, in turn, leads to the improvement of economic condition of farms more closely integrated with the market.

Résumé :
Creation of value-added at the farms could play great role in strengthening of their economic sustainability. Serbia has long tradition in pig farming. This subsector of agriculture in last few decades is facing the negative trend in production capacities (decrease in active farms and number of pigs) and it is mainly based on economically weak family farms characterized by small number of pigs. On the other hand it is obvious the strengthening of their specialization to pig farming. This line of agricultural production is specifically under the higher production risks mainly influenced by pork cycle and some market risks. Thus, the often and expressed price oscillation affects primarily the sustainability of small farms, disabling the proper planning of production and endangering their survival. Processing of pork meat at small family farms could be a good solution for income stabilization, where created value added could induce better competitiveness of the farms. The main goal of the paper is to present the economic potential of the conduction of pork meat processing at small family farms, in scenarios with or without of employment of external labour. In this context, it was used the analytical calculations based on variable costs (contribution margin). Gained results show that comparing to pig growing, organization of mentioned activity will significantly increase the farm incomes in both cases, impacting the many positive effects on farm sustainability.

Résumé :
Smart Farming is a revolutionary paradigm in the agri-food sector that integrates real-time data collection through various sensors and sources (i.e., the Internet of Things technologies (IoT) such as automation systems, farm bots, drones, and technological computer infrastructure). These integrated solutions support more intelligent decisions in the agricultural sector, increasing competitiveness and productivity in rural areas. However, there are difficulties with interoperability, security, data governance, farming practices diversity, farmer capacitation, and technology diffusion. End-users are heterogeneous, from illiterate producers to farm enterprises, which involves a custom ICT adoption strategy for each potential customer. This paper presents a systematic literature review that identifies the opportunities and barriers to adopting Smart Farming solutions in rural areas, highlighting the need to implement centered-user design strategies to increase the technology adoption considering two different types of farmers.

Résumé :
Agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing rapid transformation involving major changes in farmland ownership and farm scales from small to medium farms, with the widespread use of mechanisation and agro-inputs. Generally, households are increasing their farm sizes while others are dropping out of agriculture as the non-farm economy grows in both rural and urban areas. This study examined the changes in farmland sizes in two districts in the north of Ghana where agricultural extensification is still possible. Specifically, the study addressed the questions of the historical agrarian context; the magnitude and character of farm structure changes; the emerging spatial manifestation of farms; and the use of factors of production among the emerging socially differentiated farmers.

Résumé :
The finding that smaller farms are more productive than larger farms has long been documented. At present, evidence in the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) region has been largely limited to data from farms operating 5ha and below. Examining changes in farm size distributions and their relationship with agricultural productivity is important not only for agricultural economists and development researchers but also for evidence-based policymaking which goes beyond the current smallholder-led strategies for development in the region. This study examined the dynamics of farm operations between small-scale farms (SSFs) and medium-scale farms (MSFs) over time in different farm size categories and their relationship with agricultural productivity using farming household data spanning 0–40ha in Nigeria.

Résumé :
The expansion of smallholder farms into larger farm sizes is a key strategy for growing agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. This strategy could simultaneously expand farm incomes while addressing poverty since the majority of farms in sub-Saharan Africa are smallholder farms. There is limited existing research on the possible role of conflicts in stymying the ability of smallholder farmers to transition into larger-scale farming and on the impacts of conflicts in areas that are not directly within active conflict zones. In this paper, we investigate the impacts of conflict on the ability of smallholder farmers to transition to larger scales in two regions that are not in a traditional conflict zone, by developing a household utility maximisation model to explain choices made by farm households in response to conflict.

Résumé :
This research studies the issues of intergenerational transfers in general and farm succession in particular in two different institutional environments. One is the relatively unregulated farm sector in the United States, and the other is the heavily regulated family farms in Israeli moshavim. Most of the analysis is based on modern economic theory dealing with inheritance and other intergenerational issues. However, we start with two background studies. One is a review of the legal system affecting farm succession in the moshav, which, as we claim throughout the report, is of major importance to the question in hand. The second is an ethnographical study aimed at documenting various inheritance and succession practices in different moshavim. These two studies provide insight for most of the economic studies included here. The theoretical studies mostly deal with various aspects of two major decisions faced by farmers: who will succeed them on the farm, and when will succession take place. The first decision clearly depends on the institutional structure: for instance, Israeli farmers are limited to one successor while American farmers are not. The second decision can be taken in three stages: sharing farm work with the successor, sharing farm management, and eventually transferring the ownership. The occurrence and length of each stage depend on the first decision as well as on the institutional structure directly. The empirical studies are aimed at analyzing the practices and considerations of Israeli and American farmers regarding various intergenerational transfers-related issues. We found that American farmers' decisions are mainly driven by the desire to let the farm prosper in future generations and by a preference for equal treatment of heirs, and not at all by old-age support considerations. In contrast, we demonstrate the significant effect of old-age support on the value of the transferred farm in a sample of Israeli farms. Using Israeli census data, we find that the time of farm ownership transfer responds to economic incentives. A smaller Israeli panel data set shows that controlling for the occurrence of succession, farm size rises with operator's age and eventually falls, while intensity of production seems to decline steadily. This explains another finding, that farm transfer contributed significantly to farm growth when farming was attractive to successors. This finding supports our main conclusion, that the succession decisions are of major importance to the viability and profitability of family farms over the long run.

Résumé :
The cow-calf segment of the U.S. beef industry is diverse in farm size, structure, and location, with farms located in every State and ranging from very small to very large. Modest structural change has occurred in this segment over the past two decades, resulting in moderately fewer farms that produce more animals and are more specialized in cow-calf production. This report compares cow-calf farms by region, farm size, phases of beef production that are present on the farm, and farm typology using the cow-calf version of the 2018 USDA Agricultural Resource Management Survey. Larger scale cow-calf farms were found in the Northern Plains and West regions, whereas smaller scale farms tended to be located in the Southeast and Southern Plains regions. Larger scale cow-calf farms had lower economic costs per cow and tended to adopt advanced technologies, management practices, and production systems at greater rates than smaller farms

Résumé :
This brief explores how efficient private sector-led contract poultry farming—where a farmer produces exclusively for one contractor—can boost the livelihoods of small-scale Indian farmers and support sustainable rural development. Noting the rapid growth of India’s poultry sector, the brief looks at how contract farmers benefit from economies of scale, shorter poultry farming cycles, and higher labor and capital productivity. Drawing on data from farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, it analyzes the impact of the pandemic, looks at the barriers to working with a major producer, and shows how contract farming can reduce a poultry farmer’s risk exposure.

Résumé :
This report examines land cover and land cover change associated with solar and wind farms over the period 2009-20. Wind development has been expanding since the late 1990s and comprises a larger share of renewable capacity than solar; most solar farms were installed after 2016. Due to decreasing costs and new or existing policies promoting renewable development, the pace is expected to increase. The amount of land cover directly affected by solar and wind is estimated to be small relative to the amount of farmland. Still, more than 90 percent of wind turbines and 70 percent of solar farms in rural areas were sited on agricultural land. There are large regional differences in the distribution of solar and wind development. Further, even in years where no development occurred, land cover changed more frequently on land used for solar than wind, suggesting that solar and wind were sited on different types of land. Agricultural land surrounding wind turbines typically maintained agricultural land cover after development, while approximately 15 percent of land surrounding solar farms shifted out of agriculture. This suggests that wind is compatible with agriculture and that there is some land use competition between farmland and solar farms.

Résumé :
A significant portion of energy production in the United States takes place on farmland, which can have substantial economic implications for the farmers who host such developments. This report analyzes energy payments made to farmers for the production of oil, natural gas, and wind energy on their land. The authors used 10 years of data (2011-20) from the USDA's Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) in their analysis. Results show that 3.5 percent of farm operations received energy payments and that the average annual payment to the operators was more than $30,000 (in 2020 dollars), contributing substantially to farm household income and exceeding government payments to these operations. Energy payments were more common in counties producing oil and natural gas than in those with wind energy development. Larger farms were significantly more likely to receive energy payments and received higher payments on average. Further, Hispanic producers and those with less education were significantly less likely to receive energy payments. Although the average energy payment varied by ethnicity and education status, this report did not find a statistically significant difference after accounting for farm location and size.
