Résumé :
To assess the effects of housing characteristics and home environmental factors on lung function of Chinese children, 6740 children (aged 6–16 years) were recruited from seven cities in Northeast China in 2012. Performance of lung function was determined by comparison of forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF). Multivariate regression models were used to evaluate the associations with lung function deficit. The results showed that housing conditions were associated with lung function deficit in children. The adjusted odds ratios were 0.47 (95% CI: 0.26–0.83) for FVC for “ping-fang” housing compared with “dan-yuan-lou-fang” housing and 2.90 (95% CI: 2.43–3.47) for FEV1 with home renovations completed within two years compared with counterparts. The linear regression models consistently showed a significant association of housing conditions and home environmental factors with lung function measurements across subjects. A residence taller than seven stories was negatively associated with FEV1 ( β = −55; 95% CI: −97 to −13). In conclusion, housing conditions and home environmental factors are particularly important to the development of lung function and respiratory health in children. These factors are concerning and action should be taken to improve them.

We appreciate Drs Blackman, Samson-Fang, and Gutgesell's interest in our letter to the editor and the opportunity to respond to some of their comments. Pediatricians and child psychiatrists are frequently prescribing the combination of clonidine and methylphenidate to manage children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who are unresponsive to other treatments. We agree that monitoring pulse and blood pressure, as well as looking for a history of cardiac sinus node dysfunction, makes clinical sense. Regarding baseline ECGs, there does not seem to be enough data on the use of this combination of medications in children to state a definitive answer.

Résumé :
In this contribution, we examine the question of the transmission of Bantu languages from the generation of the parents to the generation of children, into the specific context of Gabon. Our results are based upon a sociolinguistic survey (Zuè Elibiyo, 2008) made in two different cities of Gabon. One of these cities is located in the north-west (Libreville), and the other one in the center (Lambaréné). The data analysis shows that French language is clearly the language which the great majority of the parents transmit to their children. Nevertheless, at least two Bantu local languages, Fang (A75) and Gisir (B41) are, to a certain extent, also spoken by adults to the children within the family context. Finally, we show that not all local languages of Gabon are really endangered, even though their transmission is globally in decline.

Résumé :
There are many contradictions in previous studies of the status of depressive symptoms among Chinese migrant children, the number of which in the compulsory education stage is about 13.9 million. This systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to compare depressive symptoms among migrant children and their urban children. Around 2,710 papers were retrieved from PubMed, OVID, the Web of Knowledge, CNKI, Wan Fang, Chongqing VIP, and Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index on January 27, 2020. Thirty-Two studies met study criteria with 14,906 migrant children and 10,792 urban children. Migrant children scored significantly higher for depressive symptoms score (SMD = 0.307, 95% CI [0.222, 0.393]). Region significantly influenced the difference of depressive symptoms between migrant children and urban children. Large effect sizes came from studies using scales that focus on depressive mood while studies using scales that focus on depressive behavioural symptoms had small effect sizes. Future research should focus on treatments to decrease depressive mood of migrant children. Future studies can add information about the length of their current stay in the urban location to improve the quality of study. PROSPERO registry: Systematic review registration no. CRD42018090676.

Résumé :
Background Prenatal exposure to pesticides has been linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Gaps exist in the current literature about the timing and magnitude of exposures that result in these adverse outcomes. Objective The Study of Asian Women and their Offspring’s Development and Environmental Exposures (SAWASDEE) cohort was established to investigate the impact of prenatal exposure to pesticides on early indicators of cognitive and motor skills, inhibitory control, emotion regulation, and memory that have been found to be important in the development of subsequent neurobehavioral and neurodevelopmental diseases. The overarching goal is to find earlier predictors of potential adverse neurologic outcomes in order to enable earlier interventions that could result in better outcome prognoses. Methods Recruitment of this prospective, longitudinal birth cohort began in July 2017 and was completed in June 2019 in Chom Thong and Fang, 2 farming districts in Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. Follow-up of the study participants is ongoing. During pregnancy, 7 questionnaires were administered. Time-resolved biospecimen samples were collected monthly (for urine) and during each trimester (for blood) during antenatal care visits. Medical records were abstracted. Infants were administered the NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) test at 1 month of age. A total of 322 mother-child pairs completed the NNNS test. All children will be followed until 3 years of age and undergo a series of neurodevelopmental tests. We will complete several additional exposure related analyses. Results A total of 1298 women were screened, and of those, 394 (30.35%) women were enrolled. The mean gestational age at enrollment was 9.9 weeks (SD 2.6). Differences in literacy were observed between Chom Thong and Fang participants. In Fang, about 54 of 105 (51.4%) participants reported being able to read in Thai compared to about 206 of 217 (94.9%) participants in Chom Thong. The percentages were comparable for reporting to be able to write in Thai. Conclusions This longitudinal birth cohort study will inform risk assessment standards for pregnant women in Thailand and other countries. Building awareness of how insecticide exposure during specific windows of pregnancy affects the neurodevelopmental trajectories of children in developing countries is a specific need recognized by the World Health Organization. Résumé :
Venomous snake bites can constitute medical emergencies, and without immediate care may be life-threatening. This study describes the characteristics and management of patients suffering from snake bite injuries (SNIs) in the Jerusalem area. A retrospective analysis of all patients who were admitted to the Hadassah Medical Center emergency departments (EDs) due to SNIs between 1 January 2004 and 31 March 2018 was conducted. During this period, 104 patients were diagnosed with SNIs, of whom 32 (30.7%) were children. Overall, 74 (71.1%) patients were treated with antivenom, 43 (41.3%) were admitted to intensive care units, and 9 (8.6%) required treatment with vasopressors. No mortality was recorded. On ED admission, none of the adult patients presented with an altered mental state compared to 15.6% of the children (p < 0.00001). Cardiovascular symptoms were observed in 18.8% and 5.5% of the children and adults, respectively. Fang marks appeared in all of the children. These findings underscore the severity of SNIs and the differences in clinical presentation between children and adults in the Jerusalem region.

Résumé :
Background. The transtheoretical model (TTM) views individual behavioral change as a nonlinear, dynamic process, which is consistent with the complex nature of physical activity (PA) in children and adolescents. However, within this theoretical framework, the elements that facilitate the behavioral change in PA in children and adolescents need to be further explored. Objective. A systematic review of research related to TTM-based exploration of the elements of behavioral change in PA in children and adolescents, an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses in practice, and an outlook for future research. Materials and Methods. After computer searches of the CNKI, Wan-Fang, VIP, WOS, PubMed, and EBSCO databases, two researchers independently screened articles, extracted information, and evaluated the quality of the articles. Results. A total of 25 articles (26 studies) of medium- to high-quality were included in the systematic review. The meta-analysis included 30,106 children and adolescents aged 11.24 to 17.7 years. The counter-conditioning and self-liberation of the process of change, self-efficacy and decisional balance are key elements that facilitate the transition of the PA stage in children and adolescents. Extramodel psychological variables such as exercise motivation play a moderate to large role in the PA stage transition. In addition, VPA is an important discriminator of PA stage transition in children and adolescents. Conclusion. It is recommended that interventions be designed according to the key elements of behavioral change in order to better facilitate the PA stage transition of children and adolescents.

Résumé :
Background: Snake bite is one of the important health problems in tropical and sub-tropical countries including India. Most snake bites present without envenomation as most bites are usually due to non-poisonous snakes and even poisonous snakes can control amount of venom injected. Even though mortality is under reported, India accounts for most of deaths due to snake bite. Methods: A hospital based descriptive case study was conducted at Pediatric ward of VIMS Ballari. All children with definite history of snake bite with fang marks or features of local/systemic envenomation were included in study. Demographic parameters, symptomatology and complications were noted down as per pro forma and data was analyzed. Results: Most bites occurred in lower limbs in older children while playing outdoors. Most cases were from rural area. Majority presented with local toxicity followed by hemotoxicity and neuroparalysis. Two children died, one because of respiratory paralysis and other by acute kidney injury. Conclusions: Snake bite is a preventable health problem. By wearing protective shoes and avoiding outdoor sleep many snake bites can be avoided. Early, aggressive but judicious use of antisnake venom is a cornerstone of management.

Huang, Judy. « Inhibition-based fan effect in children engaged in letter and colour blob flanker tasks ». Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10291.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
An inhibition-based fan effect was explored with two different negative priming tasks. Experiment 1 used a modified flanker-type colour blob task in both children and adults (Pritchard & Neumann, 2004), where two additional conditions were included (C2 and IR2). Each set of the colour blobs for the additional conditions consist of two distractor colours instead of one distractor colour. Experiment 2 used Navon’s (1977) global-local letter task, where a global letter contains one, two, or three local letters as distractors to see if an inhibitory fan effect operated on the should-be-ignored local letters. Results from both experiments did not support for the inhibition-based fan effect hypothesis. However, in line with Pritchard and Neumann (2004) and Frings et al. (2007), there was evidence for the claim that selective control mechanism are developed much earlier in young children than previously thought.

Résumé :
The National Alliance for Youth Sports compared field reports released in 1995 to those in 2000, illustrating a 5% to 15% increase in adults that have gotten out of line at youth events (Carlozo, 2000). The purpose of this study was to assess the nature and frequency of adult comments at Little League baseball games for children ages 9 to 12. In addition, adults were surveyed in order to evaluate their personal opinions of crowd conduct. The participants in this study consisted of adults attending Little League baseball games in rural Indiana from May 30, 2001 to June 26, 2001. To address the purpose of the study, the researcher recorded adult comments using an adaptation of the Parent Observation Instrument for Sports Events (Kidman et al., 1999). An additional sample of 65 adults attending the last game of the season was purposefully selected to complete the survey portion of the study. The researcher tried to determine if there were significant differences between the nature of the adult comments (positive or negative), the frequency of adult comments by team play (offense or defense), by gender of the adult, by team status (winning or losing), or by competitive level (major league or minor league). Additionally, the researcher tried to determine whether there were qualitative differences between actual comments and adult opinions of comments.A chi square analysis was calculated for hypotheses 1 - 5 (p < .05) and the last hypothesis compared a chi square calculation to the frequency counts on a survey of adults. The results showed a significant difference in the frequency of comments based on the nature of the comment (positive/negative), gender, and competitive level (major league/minor league). There was no significant difference between team status (winning/losing) and frequency of comments made. There was consistency between adults' opinions of comments and actual observations. Observation results showed higher frequencies of positive comments than negative comments. Through survey data analysis, it was determined that adults believed more positive comments were made at the games.

The changes of the Internet network technology have brought forward the diversification of communication tools. The new media have emerged as the important communication platforms providing a wide variety of the contents. Nevertheless, it is the issues of how to integrate and use right channels to interact with their fans that challenges all enterprises and organizations after the rise of the new media. Despite that government agencies have already regarded the fan page as an effective platform to communicate with people, their applications of interactions with the fans on the internet are still comparatively conservative than private enterprise sectors. Therefore, the object of the study is the fan page of the Women and Children Protection Brigade (WCPB) of Taiwan's Policy Agency, the research purposes are to explore the business strategy of the public relations for the fan page of women and children related internet websites and to understand how they interact and communicate with the facebook fans. Using both quantitatie and qualitatie approach to analyze the communication strategy and interactive behaviors, the research employs both methods of the contents analysis and the depth interview by focusing on the fan pages of the WCPB of Taiwan's six special municipalities. The research findings are: it is the lowest of the degree of application in the improvement of the revisiting rate, among the application principles of communication and dialogue. On the execution side, Taiwan’s police agencies are also found having the issues of insufficient resources, such as limited manpower, professional knowledge, and capital funds. Besides, owing to the constraint of just having very few fan pages dedicated to women and children in Taiwan, there is still much room for upward improvement on the propaganda and communication strategy, by utilizing the fan page platform of the social media of Facebook, so as to ensure the better living protection and to create better living space with dignity for women and children.

Résumé :
AbstractWatching sport and attending a sport event are generally considered popular, enjoyable, and valorized activities in our society. The last few years have seen a development in digital technologies (i.e. smartphones, tablets, computers), which now offers the possibility to gamble on almost every sport events, at every moment, e.g. before or during a game in play. Moreover, the level of exposure to sports betting advertisements is unprecedented. Promoted by this around-the-clock availability and ubiquity of cues, sports betting and gambling is becoming increasingly popular, in particular in adolescents and young adults, with a growing concern that this population could develop unprecedent levels of gambling-related problems. Our objective here is to elaborate on how the increased popularity of sports betting is currently reframing the way sport is experienced by young fans and student-athletes. After describing current levels of sports betting involvement and related problems among young people, we will review the available evidence documenting the growing normalization and popularity of gambling in sports and its impact on cognitive and affective processes in children and adolescents, including young athletes. The last section focuses on regulation strategies addressing current concerns on the consequences of sports betting in children and adolescents.

Résumé :
Abstract Media studies have been engaged in academic analysis of audiences for at least ninety years. As early as 1914, the Reverend J. J. Phelan used surveys to study movie preferences of children, and in 1915 William Healy published a book on the relationship between watching films and juvenile delinquency, basing his arguments on case studies (Jowett et al. 26). Since then, the mass audiences of film, and then radio and television, have produced a profitable field for reception research on both everyday and fan spectatorship. Scarcely a subject or method has not been explored in at least an introductory way (Staiger, Media). A rich literature exists on fans, cult movies, stars, readers of various subjectivities, and violence, horror, and sexually explicit materials.

Résumé :
Though millions of school-aged children and youth are increasingly drawn to Japanese animation, or anime, schools in the United States have not capitalized on this potential conduit for cultural learning. This entails a significant loss in terms of the potential to reorient internationally-focused humanities and social science curricula towards culturally-relevant pedagogy. It would be helpful to explore how two populations that would likely be directly involved in anime curricula's implementation make sense of anime's pedagogical potential. This chapter explores the attitudes of Japanese animation fans towards the prospect of using anime in K-12 school curricula in contrast to the attitudes of aspiring public school teachers. Interview data from forty-four anime fans and forty-four aspiring teachers were analyzed to locate plotlines involving hypothetical teachers and students using anime in a classroom setting. Implications for teacher training programs and school curricula are discussed.

Abstract This chapter discusses dyspnea, which is a common and potentially underrecognized symptom in infants, children, and adolescents who have complex congenital heart defects. The clinician caring for these children should strive to identify and relieve the experience of dyspnea through a combination of nonpharmacological and pharmacological interventions. Diagnostic evaluation and treatment of the underlying problem, including diuretic therapy for fluid management and agents to achieve afterload reduction, may be warranted. Environmental modifications including a cool airflow from a fan as well as pharmacological interventions such as opioids may be effective. Anxiety secondary to dyspnea should also be considered and addressed.

Résumé :
Abstract Armstrong wrote this document during his recovery from heart and kidney ailments. He begins by telling how he tried to convert the hospital staff to Swiss Kriss, a laxative that he praises often in this book. Laxatives were important to him from early childhood, when his mother used local herbs as a kind of folk medicine. Armstrong explains in “The Satchmo Story” that he regards marijuana as an herbal medicine very much akin to herbal laxatives. Perhaps it is not too much to say that he regarded laxatives as cleansers for the body, marijuana as a cleanser for the mind. Thus, access to his chosen laxative is a primary concern as he begins to restore his health. Armstrong acknowledges the help of friends, associates, and the beautiful nurses. The vitality of his own “beautiful imagination” was certainly important for restoring health; to this one might add his sense of humor. He also reports here on the pleasure of telling stories to neighborhood children about his early courtship with Lucille while both were working at the Cotton Club with Bill Bojangles Robinson.

Résumé :
The relevance of the research topic is due to the fact that marketing in sports is an effective component of sports management, just as it is in other areas of management. Sports marketing has its own specific features based on the characteristics of a particular sport, and this article deals with football marketing. The purpose of this article is to reflect the results of the study of a sports club’s marketing activities. The object of the study is the regional football club “Nizhny Novgorod”(Russia). The main objectives of the study are to identify the factors that attract the fans’ interest to the football club, to attending matches and purchasing club merchandise. Based on a survey of Nizhny Novgorod residents, a study of football fans’ needs in the region was carried out and the target audience of the FC “Nizhny Novgorod” was determined. The results of the survey show that the fans are poorly motivated to attend football matches with the participation of this club. The potential of modern promotion methods such as social media marketing (SMM) is used insufficiently. There is a need to make a more active impact on football consumers in the region, to intensify the work with the fans of the club, to improve the quality and design of the club’s merchandise. As a result of our research, a series of measures have been developed aiming to involve fans in the club’s life, both on match days and between matches. These measures include: promoting season ticket sales, more effective use of the home stadium on match days, active work to attract families with children, organising family leisure at the stadium, stadium tours, activities outside the stadium – weekend events in the city’s parks. The value of the research findings presented in the article lies in identifying the need to create the conditions for a football feast based on football marketing methods, aiming to attract fans to the club.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT As a result of the adoption of market mechanisms, access to sports and football services among adolescents has become a matter of individual choice and economic opportunities of their parents. Through the lens of the concept of Service-dominant logic, the paper interrogates various manifestations of the processes of value co-creation and destruction in the context of the relationships between players’ parents and youth football academies. A random survey among 1,023 parents of children practicing organized forms of football within club-based youth football schools/academies throughout the country was conducted. The respondents encompassed all clubs competing in the First and Second professional leagues. Over 70% of adolescents have been practicing the game as part of a club youth football school for more than 3 years. It is worth mentioning that for nearly 20% of the parents the skills of coaches are the main factor in choosing a club. 13.5% of the parents believe that their child has the potential to become a professional player. It turns out that over 65% of children are not fans of the club in which they train, which also indicates insufficient levels of loyalty. Parents have become the biggest ‘investors’ in youth football in Bulgaria in the form of personal funds and volunteering. In return, they receive a service with a low perceived value. Parents’ choices are driven primarily by rational consumer motives. On the other hand, in clubs with a low degree of diversification of funding sources, a number of undesirable practices are often formed. The study has practical implications for both parents and football club schools’ managers who aim to find new ways of integrating resources and applying competencies. Parents are considered definitive stakeholder in the ecosystem of youth football. Therefore, the study contributes to the further understanding of the value co-creation concept by expanding it into a specific area of interactions.

Résumé :
Nowadays, research and innovation in the pediatric field represent both a challenge and a great development opportunity. The emergence of clinical problems and the convergence of scientific knowledge and multidisciplinary approaches allows us to offer innovative solutions to improve pediatric care. In particular, the new digital technologies represent an important factor of innovation in the field of health care and, above all, in delicate and complex contexts such as Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), where due to the vulnerability of young patients it is necessary to use of ever more straightforward and more efficient care tools. However, in the pediatric field and, above all, in Neonatology, cases of errors in healthcare are increasingly frequent; it is estimated that a child is three times more exposed than an adult to potentially harmful situations of Medication Error because the level of assistance required is higher and the equipment required is more complex. In particular, one of the most common causes of access to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the respiratory difficulty which requires specific mechanical ventilation treatment, which can involve human errors and risks related to its use with possible physiological complications.Sometimes, human error can be attributed to the excessive complexity of using the products/services or the need for more materials suitable for the personnel needs. In the neonatal field, there are frequent problems related to usability, ergonomic characteristics, software and hardware interfaces, the human factor, and the context and methods of use of medical devices that lead to errors. The general objective of this study, conducted at the Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence, was to improve not only the condition of the well-being of the young patient but also the working conditions of the medical and healthcare staff, promoting interaction, simplifying the actions and minimizing the possibility of error in use. This paper reports the main results of the research achieved thanks to the application of the evaluation methods of usability and safety of use typical of Human-Centered Design. These have made it possible to pay attention to the needs of users who interact with the medical system (patients, health professionals) and the different skills of the professionals involved in designing and providing services.Through field surveys and discussions with experts and healthcare professionals (user observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, etc.) conducted at Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence, it was possible to collect data on current critical issues. In particular, the survey made it possible to understand how the user interacts with existing fans and how much these can lead to problems regarding the complexity of assembly, the difficulty of reading the physical and digital interface, the presence of numerous instruments during transport and the issues relating to the organization of the treatment phases. The analysis of the user and the evaluation of the criticality of the existing products/systems have therefore allowed the identification of possible scenarios and intervention solutions, defining the requirements of the new ventilation system. From the results obtained, it was possible to configure new solutions, which gave rise to the design of a new generation lung ventilator for NICU to improve ventilation assistance operations, reduce user errors and make the product versatile and easy to use both in the ward and during neonatal protected transport.
