Résumé :
AbstractThis glimpse into sex education in the Los Angeles region illustrates the eugenic ideas about racially “fit” reproduction that emerged in family life curricula during the Second World War. Ideas about eugenic reproduction in public schools responded to broader cultural fears about increasing divorce rates, criminality, immigration, and birthright citizenship. Eugenics in sex and family life education, importantly, portrayed a woman’s choice of mate as a civic responsibility, a move that paved the way for future conflicts about teaching gender and sexuality in public school sex education. Amid a half-century-long conflict over abstinence-only versus comprehensive sex education in public schools, topics like genetics and heredity have come to be widely accepted by both sides—recognized as a presumably value-neutral staple of sex education in US public schools. Yet recent innovations in genetic and reproductive technologies, as well as the conflict over trans and queer youth in the United States, challenge the assumption that teaching genetics and heredity in public schools really is “value neutral.”

Résumé :
AbstractThe 2020 Juvenile Residential Facility Census reports that roughly 25,000 youth in the United States (U.S.) are incarcerated—placing the United States as the leading nation in number of juveniles in correctional facilities worldwide. This paper aims to highlight an overlooked population impacted by this issue: not the incarcerated youth themselves, but their siblings. This paper first grounds historical trends, the effects of racialized sociopolitical systems on disparate rates of incarceration, and the current state of youth incarceration, with a specific focus on impacts on families. This paper reviews the literature on how families are affected by the juvenile justice system in terms of their well‐being, education, and other outcomes—drawing from the small body of research directly on siblings and hypothesizing impacts in need of further study based on families' experiences in the criminal justice system. We present historical and current issues/limitations to understanding and addressing the impacts of youth incarceration on siblings, concluding with areas of future research needed to address the impacts that a youth's incarceration has on their siblings and family.

Résumé :
This literature review explores the sociocultural experiences of international graduate students in universities in the United States. In addition to the typical challenges faced by students going to universities in America, international graduate students undergo extra stress. Research has shown that students face issues such as negotiating the U.S. health care system, the pressures of competency in American English, balancing financial concerns, social connectivity, and anxiety due to isolation from family and friends. These factors place students at risk for developing health problems. Significant findings have indicated that institutions and students’ age play important roles in impacting students’ successful adjusting experiences even though the struggle for acculturation is a personal task. We organized our analysis and discussion around how to help graduate students to obtain sociocultural support and concluded with some suggestions on ways to address inadequacies within the institutional systems to make the schools welcoming for international students.

Résumé :
Introduction: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a treatment sequela with negative physical and psychological implications. BCRL is a lifetime concern for survivors and is currently incurable. With the increase in the Latino population in the United States, it is critical for the cancer care community to address factors that increase BCRL risk and negatively impact long-term quality of life. This literature review undertook to identify successful intervention strategies for BCRL among Latina survivors. Methods: Multiple databases were searched for published articles from 2006 to 2020. PRISMA guidelines were utilized. Data were extracted related to physical activity, diet, and psychosocial stress concerns of Latinas at risk for or living with BCRL. Results: Eleven interventions combined education and skill-building techniques to address physical activity, diet, and stress management for BCRL. Family involvement, peer-mentoring, culturally tailored education, and self-care skill development were identified as important for Latina survivors. Conclusion: Latina survivors may benefit from culturally tailored BCRL education programs and self-management interventions. Health care professionals and researchers should consider cultural influences when developing clinical intervention strategies to enhance outcomes for Latinas at risk for living with BCRL. In addition, including family members and/or peers in such strategies may be helpful to Latina survivors.

Résumé :
Abstract A growing body of literature shows that family and unpaid caregivers of older adults with cancer are assuming more care responsibilities, especially after discharge from an inpatient admission, and frequently report feeling unprepared to do so. Interprofessional collaborative practice can rectify this gap to help ensure caregivers are included in the care team and patient education in the hospital. This retrospective data analysis of electronic health record data examines the prevalence of caregiver involvement in education activities conducted by health care practitioners for older adult cancer inpatients at an academic medical hospital in the midwestern United States. Our dataset includes a total of 676 admissions of older adult cancer inpatients (565 unique patients) between 9/1/2018 and 10/1/2019. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted to determine the prevalence of caregiver involvement in patient educational activities. The average patient was 75 years old (range: 66-89), white(95%) and male (57%). Approximately 5,720 educational topics were discussed with patients, and 88% of admissions included some patient education. Caregivers were included in 29.6% of educational topics discussed and at least one education session for 42.9% of all admissions. Caregivers are important collaborators in supporting the health and well-being of older adults with cancer, but they are often not included in patient educational activities prior to discharge. Practioners may need to evaluate barriers to including caregivers in patient education activities. A better understanding of this gap in education can help inform future interprofessional collaborative practice initiatives.

Résumé :
At the annual conference of The American Psychiatric Association (APA) in Miami, there was a workshop entitled "Family Crisis". The results of a study said that in the last 30 years, 60% of families in the United States ended in divorce, and 70% of their children did not develop well, behave deviant or antisocial. For example seen juvenile delinquency, abuse of NAZA (Narcotics, Alcohol, and other Addictive Substances), promiscuity, deviant sexual behavior and so on. It was also stated that divorce rates are increasing, marriages are decreasing because many people choose to live together without marriage or single life and free sex. Disloyalty (abuse) among families in the US turned out not to be the monopoly of husbands alone, but 40% of the wives there were also involved in affair with third parties. Of the five marriages in the first five years, three divorces occurred. The author gives the purpose of writing to discuss the crisis in the household, rebuild the household and give Christian values in counteracting divorce. The author uses descriptive literature research method data and provides research results: How a harmonious family can be established dynamically if we base our family building on the basis of strong Christian spirituality values accompanied by a fabric of good communication between us and our children. Surprisingly few studies have explored the implications of divorce happened because family can not be established, especially in young adulthood. This study addresses several theoretical arguments linking divorce in the side of spiritual value with reduced religious involvement in young adulthood and tests relevant hypotheses using data from a unique sample. Results show that divorce in the side of spiritual value is associated with substantially lower communicate religious involvement among young adults in their families house.

Résumé :
Abstract Context: Latino cancer patients experience disparities in access to and quality of palliative care. Objectives: This literature review addressed three aims: 1) to summarize existing palliative care interventions that aim to improve the quality of life for Latino cancer patients; 2) to evaluate the health care decision-making between providers and Latino cancer patients/family members who received palliative care, and 3) to describe culturally sensitive palliative care interventions for Latino cancer patients in the United States. Methods: We conducted a literature review using multiple electronic databases (PubMed and the University of Texas Medical Branch database) to identify potentially relevant empirical research published from (month) 2017 through March 2022. Peer-reviewed, empirical studies that implemented a palliative care intervention with a focus on the quality of life, health care decision-making, cultural sensitivity, and patient experiences with the palliative care intervention were reviewed. Studies included participants from pediatric to adult populations and other minority populations (with the inclusion of Latino and Hispanic participants) in their sample. Articles and palliative care interventions had to have taken place in the United States and had to be written in English. Any other language or different location were not included. Results: Of the twenty-two articles that satisfied eligibility criteria, only eleven articles focused on Latino cancer patients. Approximately half of the included? studies involved the quality of life, health care decision-making, and cultural sensitivity in their interventions. Sixteen articles incorporated cultural sensitivity throughout palliative care intervention development. Interventions that aimed to provide culturally sensitive palliative care made generalizations (culture differences within different countries' representation, language, education level, and gender) that were not applicable to all Latino and Hispanic groups. Discussion: Few empirical studies focused on palliative care interventions for Latino cancer patients. Many interventions for Latino and Hispanic cancer patients lack cultural sensitivity. Results suggest that interventions currently used are moderately acceptable; Future interventions should consider cultural sensitivity, avoid generalizations among Latino cancer patients, and improve the engagement of health care decisions between the clinical team and patient/family members. As palliative care intervention is personalized for each patient, the medical team should keep an account in understanding the patient background to construct a culturally competent treatment and engagement with patients and their caregivers/community in order to provide a better quality of life. Résumé :
Life stories such as memoirs reflect the interplay of autobiographical reasoning, and collective remembrance at a time and in a place where memoirs are written. Using this perspective for understanding life-writing, I discuss memoirs written by two women who were formerly internees in the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Olga Lengyel (1909–2001) lost her entire family in the camp and wrote her memoir in Paris just after the war. Her account describes the atrocities that she observed with few reflections on her own experiences. Mira Ryczke Kimmelman, (1923–) wrote her memoir more than half a century later as an emigre to the United States after the war where she and her husband raised their children and where she is presently an active participant in the survivor community. Her memoir is written as what Tomkins and McAdams have portrayed as a characteristic American redemptive account of successfully overcoming adversity. Following a happy childhood and suffering through the Shoah, Mira Kimmelman is a generative mentor who lectures on her experiences and leads tours for young people back to her homeland. She is concerned that the next generation be spared the suffering of the Shoah.

Résumé :
Abstract This article examines the life and thought of Erich Heller, a prolific scholar of Austrian and German literature and philosophy. Born into a German Jewish family in the borderland of Habsburg Bohemia, Heller graduated from Prague’s German University, only to be forced to flee the Nazi invasion. He found refuge in Britain before moving ultimately to the United States where he taught for two decades at Northwestern University. Erich Heller’s physical and intellectual journey highlights both moments of conflict and cultural transmittance between German-speaking Central Europe and the Anglophone world. Heller was only half at home in the new world where he helped rehabilitated German and Austrian literature and thought abroad. The article explores Heller’s intellectual development throughout his voluntary and forced migrations and traces changes in his political and philosophical identity. Heller’s life, thought, and success are considered in two main contexts: that of his generation of Bohemian-born émigrés and of the postwar atmosphere in American higher education, in particular, the role of German-speaking scholars within it. It analyzes the way in which Heller understood his own transcendence within the national frames and its implication. The article answers two questions: What were the main contributing factors to Heller’s success in the postwar academic discipline German and Austrian Studies and what is the relevance of his teaching today?

Résumé :
The United States (US) has been at war for almost two decades, resulting in a high prevalence of injuries and illnesses in service members and veterans. Family members and friends are frequently becoming the caregivers of service members and veterans who require long-term assistance for their medical conditions. There is a significant body of research regarding the physical, emotional, and social toll of caregiving and the associated adverse health-related outcomes. Despite strong evidence of the emotional toll and associated mental health conditions in family caregivers, the literature regarding suicidal ideation among family caregivers is scarce and even less is known about suicidal ideation in military caregivers. This study sought to identify clusters of characteristics and health factors (phenotypes) associated with suicidal ideation in a sample of military caregivers using a cross-sectional, web-based survey. Measures included the context of caregiving, physical, emotional, social health, and health history of caregivers. Military caregivers in this sample (n = 458) were mostly young adults (M = 39.8, SD = 9.9), caring for complex medical conditions for five or more years. They reported high symptomology on measures of pain, depression, and stress. Many (39%) experienced interruptions in their education and 23.6% reported suicidal ideation since becoming a caregiver. General latent variable analyses revealed three distinct classes or phenotypes (low, medium, high) associated with suicidality. Individuals in the high suicidality phenotype were significantly more likely to have interrupted their education due to caregiving and live closer (within 25 miles) to a VA medical center. This study indicates that interruption of life events, loss of self, and caring for a veteran with mental health conditions/suicidality are significant predictors of suicidality in military caregivers. Future research should examine caregiver life experiences in more detail to determine the feasibility of developing effective interventions to mitigate suicide-related risk for military caregivers.

Résumé :
The literature on prevention of adolescent pregnancy has a somewhat different tone than the two sets of literature we have just reviewed on delinquency and substance abuse prevention. While those fields were dominated by psychiatric studies (delinquency) and psychologically oriented school-based interventions (substance abuse), the discussion of teen pregnancy tends to focus much more on broader sociological and moral issues. During the past decade, a great deal has been said in the press and on TV specials about preventing teen pregnancy; the subject has been aired at endless conferences and in Congressional Committee hearings. A number of books have been published on the subject, typically collections of previously published articles or chapters provided by authorities. In this literature, certain strategies appear to have been accepted among most of the commentators: that the major focus of prevention should be sex education in the schools and access to contraceptive methods, with little mention of evaluation of these approaches. It would be a gross overstatement to imply that there is a consensus in the United States about what to do about adolescent pregnancy. As in every other facet of American life, there is a significant difference between “liberals” and “conservatives” about appropriate interventions. The conservatives take the position that only abstention will solve the problem, and it is up to families to produce the moral climate necessary to help their children maintain their virginity until marriage. Mosbacher, in a report for the Family Research Council of America, calls for molding children to “reflect virtue, self-control, and self-sacrifice in services to others.” Clearly, when sex enters the scene, the situation becomes complicated. Scholars may be frightened away. Universities do not have departments and big names associated with the evaluation of pregnancy prevention interventions. There is, however, extensive “population research,” focusing on demographic studies of changes in vital rates, with some work on the determinants and consequences of adolescent pregnancy (see Chapter 5). Evaluations of family planning programs are mostly being conducted overseas in developing countries.
