Résumé :
Alopecia areata (AA) is regarded as a tissue-specific and cell-mediated autoimmune disorder. Regarding the cytokine balance, AA has been considered a type 1 inflammatory disease. On the other hand, AA often complicates atopic dermatitis (AD) and AD is regarded as type 2 inflammatory disease. However, the immunological aspects of AA in relation to AD are still poorly understood. Therefore, we aim to clarify the immunological properties of AD-associated AA. In this study, we performed comparative analysis of the expression of intracytoplasmic cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-13), chemokine receptors (CXCR3 and CCR4) in peripheral blood which were taken from healthy controls, non-atopic AA patients, AA patients with extrinsic AD, and AA patients with intrinsic AD by flowcytometric analysis. We also compared the scalp skin samples taken from AA patients with extrinsic AD before and after treatment with dupilumab. In non-atopic AA patients, the ratios of CD4+IFN-γ+ cells to CD4+IL-4+ cells and CD4+IFN-γ+ cells to CD4+IL-13+ cells were higher than those in AA patients with extrinsic AD. Meanwhile, the ratio of CD8+IFN-γ+ cells to CD8+IL-13+ cells was significantly higher in the non-atopic AA than in the healthy controls. In AA patients with extrinsic AD, the skin AA lesion showed dense infiltration of not only CXCR3+ cells but also CCR4+ cells around hair bulb before dupilumab treatment. However, after the treatment, the number of CXCR3+ cells had no remarkable change while the number of CCR4+ cells significantly decreased. These results indicate that the immunological condition of AA may be different between atopic and non-atopic patients and between extrinsic and intrinsic AD patients. Our study provides an important notion that type 2 immunity may participate in the development of AA in extrinsic AD patients. It may be considered that the immunological state of non-atopic AA is different from that of atopic AA.

Résumé :
Two intrinsic (scapholunate and lunotriquetral) and two extrinsic (radiolunate and radiocapitate) wrist ligaments were studied at high and low elongation rates (1 and 100 mm/min). Statistically significant differences among all four ligaments were noted for the viscoelastic and elastic components of stress versus strain for the fully recoverable strain and early permanent deformation stress for all ligaments. Intrinsic ligaments became permanently deformed at statistically significantly higher strain levels than the extrinsic ligaments and accept larger permanent deformation at strain levels below evident fiber failure. Ultimate strength data demonstrated significant rate dependency for stress and strain for all ligaments. Intrinsic ligaments failed statistically greater stress and strain levels than the extrinsic group. Some clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Résumé :
Electrical transport properties of polycrystalline chromium vanadate (CrVO4) have been studied by measuring its a. c. and d.c. electrical conductivities, thermoelectric power and dielectric constant in the temperature range 300-1000 K. CrVO4 is a p-type semiconductor with an energy gap of 3.6 eV. The compound exhibits extrinsic nature up to 750 K and after that its intrinsic nature arises. The activation energy and charge carrier mobility in the temperature ranges 300-750 K and 750- 1000 K show that the conduction in the extrinsic region is due to a small polaron hopping mechanism and in the intrinsic region it is of the normal band type.

Résumé :
This paper presents a metaphysical argument against physicalism based on the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic properties. It argues that the physical, as physicalism must understand it, consists entirely of extrinsic properties, whereas consciousness involves at least some intrinsic properties. It concludes that consciousness has non-physical properties and that physicalism is false. The paper then defends its premises against current physicalist thinking. As much as possible, it offers metaphysical arguments about physical and conscious properties rather than epistemological arguments about our physical and phenomenal concepts.

Résumé :
A spray pyrolysis deposition technique has been used to prepare thick films of half-metallic ferromagnet La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 on LaAlO3 (001) and yttria-stabilized zirconia Y–ZrO2 (100) single-crystal substrates. The films deposited on LaAlO3 (001) exhibited a high degree of crystallinity with both in-plane and out-of-plane texture and a very sharp insulator to metal transition at TIM = 270 K. The intrinsic magnetoresistance (MR) reaches 70% at TIM in 3 T, a similar value as in the bulk material of the same composition. The extrinsic intergrain MR, however, is only 0.5% at 40 K in 3 T, 50 times smaller than for the bulk. By contrast, films grown on YSZ single crystals have a broad insulator to metal transition at a lower TIM of approximately 220 K and poor intrinsic MR. They show however an extrinsic MR as large as in the bulk. The extrinsic MR is interpreted as arising from crystalline and magnetic disorder at the grain boundaries.

The reflection shapes of configurations in ℜm with k landmarks consist of all the geometric information that is invariant under compositions of similarity and reflection transformations. By considering the corresponding Schoenberg embedding, we embed the reflection shape space into the Euclidean space of all (k - 1) by (k - 1) real symmetric matrices. In this paper, we provide a computable formula of the extrinsic mean of the reflection shapes in arbitrary dimensions. Moreover, the asymptotic analysis of the extrinsic mean of the reflection shapes is studied. By using the differentiability of spectral operators, we obtain a central limit theorem of the sample extrinsic mean of the reflection shapes. As a direct application, the two-example hypothesis test of the reflection shapes is also derived.

Résumé :
The metallurgy of cast aluminum alloys has always been considered to be different from that of wrought alloys. Metallurgists have been taught that pores are intrinsic in cast aluminum alloys and that mechanical properties in cast aluminum alloys are controlled by dendrite arm spacing, the presence of Fe-bearing particles, and the size of Si particles in Al–Si alloys, which fracture and debond during deformation, leading to premature failure. Whether these effects are intrinsic or extrinsic, i.e., mere correlations due to the structural quality of castings, is discussed in detail. Ideal properties are discussed, based on findings presented mostly in physics literature. Pores and hot tears in aluminum castings are extrinsic. Moreover, the effect of dendrite arm spacing on elongation, precipitation, and subsequent fracture of β–Al5FeSi platelets, and finally Si particle fracture and debonding are all extrinsic. A fundamental change in how we approach the metallurgy of cast aluminum alloys is necessary.

Résumé :
AbstractThis paper investigates the plausibility of Witmer, Butchard and Trogdon’s proposal to distinguish intrinsic properties from extrinsic ones in terms of independence from accompaniment and grounding. I argue that the proposed criterion is not adequate to determine intrinsicality, since according to it some intuitively extrinsic properties turn out to be intrinsic. I suggest and evaluate two responses: first, one could characterize a conception of independence which is specific to the individual instantiating the property; and second, one could justify two assumptions about properties which entail that counterexample properties of the kinds I present do not exist, most importantly that there are no fundamental properties which are instantiated in an intrinsic fashion by some individuals and an extrinsic fashion by others. Although the latter seems prima facie plausible, I present some potential counterexamples to it from current physical theory. I conclude that the grounding- and independence-based criterion of intrinsicality can be defended from my objections, although the cost of doing so might make it more attractive to characterize intrinsicality in terms of independence, or in terms of grounding, alone.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT The topic of this paper is a generalization of the linear model for intrinsic alignments of galaxies to intrinsic flexions: In this model, third moments of the brightness distribution reflect distortions of elliptical galaxies caused by third derivatives of the gravitational potential, or, equivalently, gradients of the tidal gravitational fields. With this extension of the linear model mediating between the brightness distribution and the tidal gravitational fields and with a quantification of the shape of the galaxy at third order provided by the HOLICs-formalism, we are able to compute angular spectra of intrinsic flexions and the cross-spectra with weak lensing flexions. Spectra for intrinsic flexions are typically an order of magnitude smaller than lensing flexions, exactly as in the case of intrinsic ellipticity in comparison to weak shear. We find a negative cross-correlation between intrinsic and extrinsic gravitational flexions, too, complementing the analogous correlation between intrinsic and extrinsic ellipticity. After discussing the physical details of the alignment model to provide intrinsic flexions and their scaling properties, we quantify the observability of the intrinsic and extrinsic flexions and estimate with the Fisher-formalism how well the alignment parameter can be determined from a Euclid-like weak lensing survey. Intrinsic flexions are very difficult to measure and yield appreciable signals only with highly optimistic parameter choices and noise levels, while being basically undetectable for more realistic flexion measurement errors.

Résumé :
This paper examines turbo codes that are currently introduced in many international standards and implemented in numerous advanced communication systems, and evaluates the process of extrinsic information transfer (EXIT). The convergence properties of the iterative decoding process, associated with a given turbo-coding scheme, are estimated using the analysis technique based on so-called extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. This approach provides a possibility to predict the bit-error rate (BER) of a turbo code system with only the extrinsic information transfer chart. It is shown that extrinsic information transfer charts are powerful tools to analyze and optimize the convergence behavior of iterative systems utilizing the turbo principle, i.e., systems exchanging and refining extrinsic information. The idea is to consider the associated soft-input soft-output (SISO) stages as information processors, which map input a priori log likelihood ratios (LLRs) onto output extrinsic LLRs, the information content being obviously assumed to increase from input to output, and introduce them to the design of turbo systems without the reliance on extensive simulation. Compared with the other methods for generating extrinsic information transfer functions, the suggested approach provides insight into the iterative behavior of linear turbo systems with substantial reduction in numerical complexity.

Résumé :
The Conference themes all suggest that music may be considered as a language. However, I argue that this is a misleading analogy. I shall point out some crucial differences between language and music by examining the concept of meaning. Two types of meaning will be distinguished and explained: extrinsic and intrinsic meaning. Whereas the former kind of meaning is typical of language, the latter kind is characteristic of the arts in general and of music in particular. Conceiving music as a language may easily lead us to concentrate on the extrinsic aspects of music rather than on its intrinsic meaning. The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic meaning is also relevant to understanding music of other cultures. I argue that properties related to intrinsic meaning can generally be apprehended by outsiders more easily than properties related to extrinsic meaning. Since we cannot initiate children fully into all musical traditions and styles in music education, I recommend that we pay special attention to furthering children's sensitivity to intrinsic aspects of music. Thus we can best assure that they gain a passport to musics of all cultures.

Résumé :
The techno-functionality of exopolysaccharides (EPS) from Streptococcus thermophilus in stirred fermented milk is affected by several extrinsic (e.g., base milk composition) and intrinsic (e.g., amount and properties of EPS) factors. The aim of this study was to use skim milk models to identify the key factors that influence the physical properties of stirred fermented milk with EPS. For that, fermentation was carried out with one of three single S. thermophilus strains (intrinsic factors) at two casein:whey protein ratios of the base milk, two acidification activities of the starters, and two fermentation temperatures (extrinsic factors). The effects of the factors on the acidification kinetics, EPS amount, susceptibility to syneresis, and texture properties were then discriminated by a multivariate ANOVA-simultaneous component analysis. Strains producing ropy EPS mainly determined the texture properties, whereas the extrinsic factors primarily affected the acidification kinetics and EPS amount. When capsular EPS were also present, the syneresis was lower; however, this effect was more pronounced after enrichment of base milk with whey protein. The EPS amount did not correlate with the texture or syneresis, pointing to the importance of other factors such as the EPS location (type) and EPS–protein interactions for their functionality in stirred fermented milk.

Nonlinear processes in quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIP) are reviewed. Being an intersubband dipole transition based photoconductor, the nonlinear behaviors in QWIPs are caused by both the (extrinsic) photoconductive transport mechanism and (intrinsic) nonlinear optical processes. Extrinsic nonlinearity leads to a degradation of QWIP performance at high incident power or low operating temperatures. Some intrinsic nonlinear QWIP properties are useful in applications, such as in autocorrelation of short pulses by two-photon absorption. The general area of QWIP nonlinear properties has not been extensively investigated. We point out some directions for further studies and hope to stimulate more research activities.

Résumé :
Motivation, particularly different types of motivation (i.e., intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation), is a topic that has been of interest to both psychologists and sport psychologists. One area of interest in sport psychology is the assessment of different types of motivation. The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) (Pelletier et al., 1995) was created to assess an athlete’s intrinsic motivation, extrinsic-motivation, and a motivation toward sport participation. The psychometric properties of the SMS, however, have not been tested on a sample of college athletes in the U.S., which is an important component if researchers and applied sport psychologists are to use the SMS with this population. A total of 270 U.S. college athletes participated in this study. Results provided some evidence for the reliability and validity of the SMS for this population, although a confirmatory factor analysis yielded relatively poor fit indices, indicating problems with model specification. A “piecewise” model testing approach, in which different components of the model were tested separately, indicated that the biggest problems with model specification may involve the extrinsic and amotivation components of the measure.

Résumé :
In this study, a hot forging process is applied to Nd-Fe-V as cast alloys in order to develop both the microstructure and the crystallographic texture appropriate for permanent magnet properties. A neutron diffraction texture analysis is used to account for the extrinsic magnetic anisotropy: the stabilisation of the Nd(Fe,V)12 hard magnetic phase has been achieved during forging but its extrinsic anisotropy level remains low. Attempts to understand this phenomenon are made through a discussion on the Nd-Fe-V alloy rheological and mechanical behaviour and a comparison with Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets.

Résumé :
The structure and magnetic properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes produced by catalytic pyrolysis of methane have been investigated by means of mutually complementary physical methods. The average sizes and number of carbon layers forming nanotubes, smearing of the density of states near the Fermi level, degeneracy temperature of gas of extrinsic current carriers, concentrations of localized spins and extrinsic two-dimensional current carriers have been determined. The conclusion has been drawn that ferromagnetic nanoparticles are present in the inner regions of nanotubes, including their tubular cavities. The difference in electronic structure near the Fermi level for carbon nanotubes and ordered graphite has been revealed. The possible reason is that the electronic states near zigzag-type sites of ends as well as edges of linear structural defects in nanotubes make greater contribution to the spectrum than that from similar sites of graphite.
