Résumé :
Using the finite element software ANSYS to analyze dynamic characteristics of external prestressing structure, reasonable control parameter, as well as external prestressing reinforcement joints of security, the main research contents and results are as follows: Dynamic performance analysis is about variation law and internal feature. With the increase of external prestressing, on the contrary, the natural vibration frequency will reduce. However, external prestressing effects on the structural dynamic performance improvement that is not obvious in general. Based on sensitivity analysis, control parameter of external prestressing reinforcement curved beam must be analyzed and the reasonable value range of sensitive control parameter can be found. For the control parameter of external prestressing process, its reasonable control parameter’s range should be about 6% in the theoretical calculation. While simulating of anchoring system, local force on anchoring system must be analyzed finely and accurately. A comprehensive understanding should be mastered on variation law, which is about the internal forcing and stress response of special area. The setting of anchoring device shall be arranged at 1/3 place of original prestressing position. To ensure the safety, it should guarantee the mechanical continuity of anchor joints.

Résumé :
A complete analysis of the order-disorder phase transition in nematic liquid crystals induced by an external field is presented. The case of nearly compensated nematics in weak anchoring situation is discussed. The investigation shows that the parameter controlling the order of the phase transition is a decreasing function of the anchoring strength. The important limiting cases of very weak and very strong anchoring are considered too.

Résumé :
The electronic transport of the single molecule via different anchoring groups is studied using density functional theory in conjunction with the nonequilibrium Green’s function. The results show that the electronic transport properties are strongly dependent on the anchoring groups. Asymmetric electrical response for opposite biases is observed resulting in significant rectification in current. The transmission coefficients and spatial distributions of molecular orbitals under various external biases voltage are analyzed, and it suggests that the asymmetry of the coupling between the molecule and the electrodes with external bias leads to rectifying performance.

Résumé :
We investigated the possibility of axial escape of a nematic liquid crystal confined between two concentric cylinders with surface-imposed pure bend distortion. We found that this effect appears also in the case of strong anchoring. When the twist-anchoring is weak only at one of the surfaces, the critical thickness dc of the structure is affected by the saddle-splay elastic constant K24. Moreover, if the twist-anchoring is weak at the external surface, a transition of the first order was found, dc playing the role of an order parameter. Such a transition, characterized by bistability and hysteresis, may be driven by K24 and by the anchoring strength.

Résumé :
This paper discusses the feasibility of an innovative anchoring element which is designed to be integrated into the volume of an ultra-thin coffered façade panel made of textile reinforced concrete and to not increase its external dimensions. The first part of the article describes the composition and shape of the façade panel and focuses on the manufacturing of the composite anchoring element made of carbon technical textile penetrated with polymer matrix which is intentionally identical composition as in the case of the façade panel reinforcement. The second part of the article focuses on the behavior of the composite anchoring element and its effect on its surroundings during the mechanical loading of the façade panel. Specimens of the coffered façade panel with integrated anchoring elements were subjected to four-point bending test to determine the impact of the anchoring elements on the façade panel flexural tensile strength and type of failure. Additional specimens were tested to determine the load-bearing capacity of the anchoring elements.

Résumé :
A major step in future hypertext systems, will be that of providing some of the interactivity characteristics of small scale centralised collaborative hypertext systems to larger scale, widely distributed ones such as WWW. Particularly important, as often asserted, is allowing free linking to all users, which may pose severe scale problems unless specific design decisions are taken. One design that is completely scalable is storing links’ anchors cxternally of the nodes they refer to and obtaining correctly updated information by relying on automatic versioning for all nodes. The RHYTHM hypertext system is a highly distributable hypertext system based on this premise. It provides free link, annotation, inclusion and customisation facilities to all users, creating an integrated environment for public and private document. Modularity and expandability in the services provided to the users is also an important part of the RHYTHM project, whose approach is based on allowing additional managers to be included in the client application in order to carry out specific tasks or handle specific data types.

Résumé :
There are few recent historical precedents for maintaining the high degree of separation that still prevails between the internal monetary arrangements of Hong Kong and mainland China. This paper explains why this separation is likely to erode and considers the economics of the different forms that monetary unification of China could take. It argues that achieving such unification without resorting to capital controls or expropriation is a precondition for developing a second major international currency in East Asia that would rival the yen. Until the renminbi has been established as an international currency within a unified and sound financial system that has achieved Hong Kong's current standards, there can be no progress toward a regional monetary union in East Asia. An internal goal of Chinese monetary union is banking reform and financial integration, and an external goal is to help emancipate both China and East Asia as a whole safely from the U.S. dollar standard.

Résumé :
During the design of the external cladding, it is possible to use different materials and compositions. One of these possibilities is also a ventilated facade, which consists of a supporting structure, a thermal insulation, a supporting grid, an air gap for ventilation and a cladding layer. The construction of the supporting grid in the ventilated facade must be mechanically anchored into the supporting structure of the external cladding. This mechanical anchoring causes 3-D point thermal bridges in the external cladding itself. Therefore, the aim of this work is to assess and analyze the influence of these 3-D point thermal bridges on transmission heat losses through the external cladding. A Finite Element Mesh analysis has been used for this analysis. Different types of external cladding compositions were modeled in the simulation program, and the effect on the heat transfer coefficient was determined. In addition to the analysis of the existing anchoring systems, an innovative solution has been suggested that is more economical and easier to implement. The results show that the application of anchors and their number impacts significantly on the thermal properties of the envelope. The difference between the anchoring element with a thermal insulation pad and the patented method is minimal. This is a 1.29% difference. The last variant was a proposal (patent) that the anchoring element is only plastic-coated and thus its thermal engineering properties are improved, which is manifested mainly in heat conduction but also from the radiant point of view, as plasticizing the emissivity changes. Compared to the perimeter cladding without the ap-plication of an anchoring element, the heat loss increases by 29.37%. In addition to the energy savings, there are also financial savings. While the plastic pads costs about EUR 0.3, the plastic coating (patent) represents a price of around EUR 0.03. If we had a building with 10,000 m2 of wall area where 6 pieces of anchors per 1 m2 are applied, the savings would be EUR 16,200. Such savings are already significant. The conclusion of this work is that these point thermal bridges have a significant impact on the overall transmission heat loss coefficient and therefore they have overall heat demand and energy demand.

By applying nonequilibrium Green's function formalism combined with first-principles density functional theory, we investigate the effect of different anchoring groups on the rectifying behavior in diblock molecular junctions. The spatial distributions of molecular orbitals and the influence of transmission coefficients under various external voltage biases on the electronic transport through the molecular device are discussed in detail. The results show that the anchoring groups play a significant role on the electronic transport properties. The rectifying performance in molecular junctions can be manipulated, enhanced, or suppressed by a careful consideration of the effects of the anchoring group and such modifications become crucial in optimizing the electronic transport properties of chemical structures.

Résumé :
A primary challenge in the field of reconfigurable robotics is scaling down the size of individual robotic modules. We present a novel set of permanent magnet modules that are under 1 mm in all dimensions, called Mag-µMods, for use in a reconfigurable micro-system. The modules are actuated by oscillating external magnetic fields of several mT in strength, and are capable of locomoting on a 2-D surface. Multiple modules are controlled by using an electrostatic anchoring surface, which can selectively prevent specific modules from being driven by the external field while allowing others to move freely. We address the challenges of both assembling and disassembling two modules. Assembly is performed by bringing two modules sufficiently close that their magnetic attraction causes them to combine. Disassembly is performed by electrostatically anchoring one module to the surface, and applying magnetic torques from external sources to separate the unanchored module.

Abstract The traditional investment theory already can’t explain the investing situations completely. Therefore, investors can’t make correct investing decisions. Investors are affected by non-rational psychological factors to make incorrect decisions. This study would use internally generated anchoring, externally generated anchoring, and also put in personal risk to verify the difference about investors’ intensions. According to the results of the essay, the conclusions are as follows: 1. Without discriminating personal risk attitude: 1.1 Externally generated anchoring effect is significant for investing intensions. 1.2 Internally generated anchoring effect is significant for investing intensions. 1.3 Externally generated anchoring effect doesn’t exist under the existence of internally generated anchoring effect. 2. With discriminating personal risk attitude: 2.1 For aggressive investors, externally generated anchoring effect is significant for investing intensions. 2.2 For conservative investors, internally generated anchoring effect is significant for investing intensions. 3. The main effect of independent variable 3.1 To fix internally generated anchoring on the high and low anchoring points, iii the aggressive investors of high externally generated anchoring is significantly higher than the ones of low externally generated anchoring. 3.2 To fix externally generated anchoring on the high and low anchoring points, the conservative investors of high externally generated anchoring is significantly higher than the ones of low internally generated anchoring.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses port States, coastal States and their jurisdictions. Seaports give access to the landmass of a State for persons and goods, and are therefore logical points of control for, inter alia, customs, immigration, sanitation and national security purposes. The spatial scope of a seaport includes the outermost permanent harbour works — but not offshore installations and artificial islands — as well as roadsteads that extend beyond the outer limit of the territorial sea, provided they are normally used for the loading, unloading and anchoring of ships. Port State jurisdiction can be defined as relating to activities and standards occurring within, or applicable to: the port; the maritime zones of other coastal States; areas beyond national jurisdiction (i.e. the high seas and the ‘Area’); and the maritime zones of the coastal State in which the port is located. Coastal States are universally understood to be States with a sea-coastline. A coastal State's jurisdiction relates to its own maritime zones, and encompasses the resources and activities therein as well as external impacts on them.

The introduction provides a brief historiography of US medical experiments on captive populations from slavery to the postwar prison. Addressing the primacy of vision underlying and enabling interlocking regimes of incarceration and medical science practice, it introduces the optical rationality of the postwar prison laboratory that ensuing chapters elaborate on. The chapter rereads Frantz Fanon’s use of laboratory terminology not as metaphors of dominant racial optics but as epistemological openings for thinking about the intimate link between cultural and scientific imageries of race. Anchoring the book’s aims, objects, and approaches in what Fanon called the “imago” or “epidermalization,” the introductory chapter formulates skin as a conceptual tool for engaging simultaneously with the external (social) and internal (logical) dimensions of knowledge production.

Résumé :
In the wake of the upheavals of the 1560s, new ideas about strengthening the power of rulers began to emerge. The central concept was sovereignty, first brought to public attention by the French jurist and lawyer Jean Bodin. Bodin wanted to defend the sovereign against external and internal threats, anchoring its power in divine and natural law but also giving him (or it) considerable scope for discretion. This chapter explores the origins and implications of this new interest in sovereignty, showing how it focused attention on the power of the ruler in relation to other sources of authority, notably the Church and the conscience of individuals. At Rome, Cardinal Bellarmine argued for the limits of state authority and for the indirect power of the papacy over magistrates, but other Catholics took different approaches. In particular, Giovanni Botero’s The Reason of State offered an approach to statecraft in which Church and state worked together. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands Justus Lipsius wove together classical texts, especially Tacitus, offering a route to stability and unity in a time of conflict; he acknowledged that conventional morality was sometimes inappropriate for a statesman who would need to adapt to the times. In France, Michel de Montaigne’s ground-breaking Essays combined personal reflection with subtle commentary on the world around him, as he sought to preserve his own integrity and maintain stability within his local community.

Résumé :
The English ethnic associationalism we describe in this book was not unique; indeed, it was part of a world of associations. Providing a comparative context is therefore crucial. Chapter 6 charts the evolution and purpose of those ethnic clubs and societies established in North America by other migrant groups. We focus particularly on Scots and Germans and explore the beginnings of the associational culture of these groups. The Scots were the most active in the early phase of settlement, also anchoring their associationalism in philanthropy. St Andrew’s societies, much as those of St George, had an elite dimension, but catered for a broader migrant cohort—those in distress. Similarities in the work of the two organisations even led to concrete co-operation. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, however, the Scots developed a second and distinct tier: an ethnic associational culture at the heart of which lay sport. This contributed to a significant proliferation in Scottish ethnic associational activity—though one that was trumped, in the early twentieth century—by the Scottish mutualist branches in both the US and Canada (Order of Scottish Clans and the Sons of Scotland respectively). We also develop non-British/Irish comparators through an examination of developments in the German immigrant community in North America to establish to what extent language was a factor in immigrant adjustment to new world realities. Examining the Germans will also permit consideration of how external developments—in this case particularly the First and Second World Wars—were watersheds that united British Isle migrants, while casting out Germans and the more militant wings of the Irish.

Résumé :
<p>The present study investigates the force transfer mechanisms for external bonded (EB) FRP layers/strips attached on Reinforced Concrete (R/C) members with or without anchorage systems. The EB-FRP open hoop strips are utilized to upgrade either the shear or the flexural capacity of R/C structural elements. This type of retrofitting is necessary for R/C structures designed with less stringent seismic loading conditions than those currently required. The combination of anchoring systems together with EB-FRP strips is mandatory in those cases that the debonding mode of failure has to be avoided. This research is proposing a loading arrangement, utilizing specimens with realistic geometry, for the evaluation of the efficiency of the strengthening scheme, a combination of EB-FRP strips with or without the use of an anchoring system. In all codes and norms, the use of anchoring system is proposed and allowed for driving the mode of failure to the fracture of the FRP strip. Despite this fact the code provisions are not proposing a specific anchoring system, they are not proposing a methodology to prove that the anchoring system is efficient and transfers safely the loads form the FRP to the R/C element. The proposed, novel loading arrangement is allowing the application of the demanded, imposed by the design, forces onto the prototype R/C prismatic specimen, where the desired instrumentation can be placed for capturing in detail the overall behaviour of the strengthening scheme (FRP strips combined with anchorage) up to failure. Finally, typical applications are also presented.</p>

Résumé :
Compared with open surgery, laparoscopy results in significantly less pain, faster convalescence, and less morbidity. However, eye-hand dissociation, a two-dimensional field-of-view and fixed instrumentation with limited degrees of freedom contribute to a steep learning curve and demanding dexterity requirements for many laparoscopic procedures. One of the main limitations of laparoscopy is the fixed working envelope surrounding each trocar, often necessitating placement of multiple ports to accomodate changes in position of the instruments or laparoscope to improve visibility and efficiency. The placement of additional working ports contributes to post-operative pain and carries a small risk of bleeding or adjacent organ damage. In order to provide for greater flexibility of endoscopic viewing and instrument usage and to further reduce morbidity, a novel adjunct laparoscopic system has been developed consisting of a platform capable of supporting various laparoscopic tools which is secured magnetically to the abdominal wall and subsequently positioned within the abdominal cavity through surgeon-controlled, external magnetic couples on the patient’s abdomen. Using this technique, instruments such as miniature endoscopic cameras used to augment the surgical field of view and surgical retractors have been successfully evaluated in a dry laboratory as well as in porcine models, with several others currently under investigation. This document elaborates on the theoretical and empirical process which has led to anchoring designs optimized for size, strength and surgical compatibility, as well as the benefits, limitations and prospects for the use of incisionless, magnetically-coupled tooling in laparoscopic surgery.

Résumé :
Enhanced fibroblast activity at the implant-soft tissue interface is a key concern to the long-term success of many implanted biomaterials. Uncontrolled fibrosis has been shown to dramatically decrease the stability, function, and lifespan of biomedical implants. Fibrosis, defined as the overgrowth of various tissues about the implant, is caused by the excess synthesis of extracellular matrix components, primarily collagen, and often leads to walling off and hardening (calcification) of tissues at the biomaterial interface (1). Fibrosis is currently a major deterrent to stable bone anchored prostheses. These bone anchored mounting systems are designed to surgically attach a prosthesis mounting post directly into a patient’s bone. The attached post protrudes from the bone through the overlying soft tissue of the amputated limb providing an external connection point for the prosthetic. Although the bone anchoring system dramatically improves prosthetic limb mechanical stability, uncontrolled fibrosis at the soft tissue-mounting post interface is a significant problem (2). The fibrosis caused from aberrant cellular growth leads to the formation of irregular skin folds that prevent proper sealing to the bone anchoring post and also serves as a site for opportunistic infection and failure of the prosthetic system.

Résumé :
The optical film thicknesses of a 0.1 mass% solution of hexadecanoic acid (HDA) in a nematic liquid crystal (i.e., 4-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB)) were measured in an EHD contact by using ultrathin-film interferometry. Comparing with a 0.1 mass% solution of HDA in an ordinary isotropic liquid (i.e., polyalphaolefin), the optical film thickness of the solution was increased at middle entrainment speeds (i.e., in the mixed lubrication regime). This shows that the effective viscosity of 5CB was increased with decreasing the entrainment speed, by the surface anchoring of 5CB on the boundary films formed by HDA. Using this spontaneous change in the effective viscosity, it is believed that a smart lubrication system can be realized, which optimizes the viscosity of a liquid crystal lubricant autonomously so that the friction coefficient is minimized when the entrainment speed is changed. It should be noted that this method does not need any pretreatments of contact surfaces and any external fields (e.g., an electric field or magnetic field).

Résumé :
Abstract Directed particle assembly has broad applications in sensors, actuators, microelectronics, robotics, and the biomedical area. Currently available methods include external fields such as electrical or magnetic fields, surface treatment on substrates, and DNA-assisted templates. However, these methods are most efficient at the nanoscale and would lose their efficiency and scalability above microscales. We reported in this research the uses of the 3D printed surface to direct the assembly of nanoparticles. We used carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as an example to show the long-range orders after dipping the 3D printed substrates in CNFs suspensions. The anchoring of CNFs at the solid-liquid-air contact lines will initiate the assembly procedure and further induced the neighboring CNFs because of the van der Waals forces. As a result, the CNFs formed well-regulated bands with controlled spacing and close-packing. These assembled CNFs were demonstrated in sensing applications. A gauge factor regulated the methanol at different concentrations and temperatures to pass the sensor, with the device resistivity change. In this way, the sensitivity as a function of analyte concentration and temperatures was obtained. This research studied nanoparticles’ microscale assembly based on a simple 3D printing surface and shed light on a new hybrid manufacturing for nanoparticle assembly.

Résumé :
Shape memory alloys (SMA) have received widespread attention from researchers in various fields of engineering sciences due to their exceptional properties of shape memory and superelasticity. NiTi equiatomic alloys among other SMA, show acceptable biocompatibility to be implemented in biomedical applications. Applications of NiTi in biomedical areas specifically orthopedics, demonstrate its unique performance which is not achievable with conventional materials. Pedicle screws, which are used as an anchoring point for implanting spinal instrumentations in spinal fracture and deformity treatments, entail a major drawback; i.e. loosening and back-out. The strength of screw contact with the surrounding bone diminishes as the bone degrades due to osteoporosis. A “Smart” pedicle screw design was developed to address this issue which uses NiTi superelastic-shape memory coils wrapped around it. The smart assembly consists of external superelastic tubing which is responsible for expanding the designed protrusions when they reach body temperature; also an internal shape memory wire inserted into the tubing is sought to retract the assembly when locally heated to above body temperature. The whole assembly was modeled as a beam structure in COMSOL Multiphysics Finite Element software. The behavior of shape memory alloy was defined in the software via its Partial Differential Equation (PDE) module. The SMA model has is a Tanaka-based model and is capable of capturing shape memory effect, superelasticity and hysteresis behavior, and partial transformation in both positive and negative directions. This 1D model was further modified to be included in a 3D framework such that it makes it possible for simulation of a beam under bending. The functionality of the smart screw design can be studied via this FEM model as a future work and the outcomes of the simulation can be compared with experimental tests on the prepared sample of the screw comprising NiTi tubing and wires.

Résumé :
End fitting is an essential component of flexible pipes enabling their connection between moving structures and pipes to create a complete pipe infrastructure. Designing the end fitting requires careful consideration of many factors including creating an effective barrier seal, termination of all the polymer and metal layers and anchoring armor layers so that the external loads of the pipe are transferred to the connecting structure without disturbing the seal. The most difficult challenge in designing end fittings for ultra-high pressure pipes is creating the necessary barrier sealing performance. In general, the seal needs to perform to approximately twice the design pressure of the pipe so that it can sustain the burst condition of the pipe. This requires the sealing components to be subjected to extreme loading where most of the sealing components are subjected to severe plastic deformation. Understanding seal deformations and quantifying and demonstrating sealing performance are important in the development of a reliable seal. This paper describes a method of evaluating the sealing performance of end fitting seals. Design requirements of end fitting seals are also described. The barrier seals in end fittings are normally created by swaging a metal seal ring in between the polymer barrier and the body of the fitting. This creates two leak paths, one between the metal ring and the barrier and the other at the metal-to-metal contact interface between the seal ring and the body. Achieving sufficient compression on the polymer barrier and creating sufficient contact pressure over a reasonable distance at the metal-to-metal interface are the key requirements in developing a reliable high pressure barrier seal. During this study, finite element models have been used to evaluate the contact pressure at seal contacts. These results, with a specifically developed leak criteria, have been used to evaluate the sealing performance. A brief description of the models and some specific results are presented. The FE model predictions are compared with the actual contact pressure measurements of a sealing setup.

Résumé :
The Saxton Nuclear Experimental Corporation (SNEC) constructed and operated a nuclear reactor in rural Pennsylvania as an early demonstration project. The 23.5 MWth pressurized water reactor (PWR) operated from 1962 through 1972, and completed operations with failed fuel experiments. The facility was placed into SAFSTOR and decommissioning activities began in the mid 1990’s. The reactor facility was sited on the banks of a Pennsylvania river within the immediate one hundred year floodplain. Because of the elevated groundwater levels at the site, completion of the decommissioning process would prove to be challenging. The containment was constructed as a vertical steel cylinder of 11/16” (1.75 cm) thick carbon steel, one hundred and nine feet (33 meters) tall with a diameter of fifty feet (15.25 meters). The bottom of the containment vessel was torispherical steel located approximately fifty feet below grade in the flood plain of Central Pennsylvania’s Juniata River. Construction of the vessel included an internal concrete structure that was designed as the ballast to prevent flotation of the vessel, and provided mechanical structure for the reactor and equipment installation. The steel cylinder provided the forms for the internal concrete installation. The initial phase of decommissioning for the reactor containment consisted of the complete removal of the reactor and associated components, and was completed in the late 1990’s without regard to stabilization requirements required to maintain the stability of containment. Due to concerns of possible radioactive material between the concrete structure and the steel shell, it was decided that the internal concrete would be removed. Removal of the concrete constituted removal of the ballast material and possibly degraded the structural integrity of the CV. Therefore, stabilization of the steel cylinder was required to prevent uplift (flotation) and/or deformation of the steel shell. This stabilization required the installation of a bedrock anchoring system, internal and external anti-buckling steel beam stiffener rings, and a complete site dewatering system. TLG Services completed concrete removal in October of 2002, and this paper will provide information and details of the complex concrete removal project, project challenges, and lessons learned.

Résumé :
The predominant class of molecular systems considered so-far towards applications in the realm of quadratic nonlinear optics has been derived from the all-pervading "molecular diode" template as exemplified by paranitroaniline-like molecules. The underlying basic paradigm consists in the dipolar anchoring of an interacting couple of electron donor and acceptor groups to a conjugated π electron linkage(1). The virtue of such a configuration is to provide a significant electronic charge displacement in the ground state which is further enhanced upon directional optical excitation towards the charge-transfer level. This basic mechanism has been confirmed by nearly two decades of experiments in solutions, crystals and polymer media with the two-level quantum model providing solid theoretical support(2). Both the Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) experiment and the current poled polymer technology essentially depend on the existence and magnitude of a strong ground state dipole μ contributing to the μ.E coupling potential between individual molecules and the externally applied de poling field E.
