Résumé :
Interest in citizen science is growing among both scientists and community groups who are interested in creating natural resource management projects. Such projects have the potential to result in social learning, which can further reinforce resource stewardship. Data to study this learning process, however, remain scant. Using transcripts from four different natural resource management projects, we use discourse analysis to investigate the discursive practice between project scientists and community members in the development of models that were used to test ideas and subsequently modified with citizen collected data. We found that only a portion of the discussion focused on knowledge building and that only experts provided challenges to ideas being discussed. Subsequently to these challenges, however, a greater proportion of knowledge co-creation occurred.

Résumé :
Drawing on teacher agentive acts in the process of collaborative expertise-building in selects tertiary institutions in Southeast Asia, this paper maps out the conceptual configurations of teacher agency. In doing so, it avoids both the overly deterministic and individualistic views of agency by locating it within structuring conditions where individual acts are also mobilized. However, while most socially constructive views of agency focus on situated and institutional constraints of agency, this paper conceptualizes teacher agency in its broadest possible sense as historical, cultural and ideological phenomenon, arguing that agentive acts cannot merely be seen as either working for or against educational reform and transformation; rather teachers must take control of the process of knowledge production because it is by doing so that teachers can take ownership over their everyday classroom tactics and practices. Teacher agency in this sense is not simply a capacity to act but, in fact, an accomplishment of acts of producing knowledge for one’s professional practice.

Résumé :
The paper is devoted to solving such a scientific and practical problem as the creation of computerized infocommunication systems for support building-technical expertise to determine the causes of destruction and deformation of buildings and structures. The analysis of the current state of expert activity within the framework of building-technical expertise is carried out. Perspective directions of the introduction of intelligent infocommunication systems in the course of performance of building-technical expertise and expert researches are outlined. The architecture of Intelligent Support System Building-Technical Expertise and the communication scheme of experts with the system are shown. To mapping expert knowledge formalized in the form of fuzzy associative rules to the memory card of the Cascade ARTMAP category fuzzy artificial neural network, it is proposed to use a fuzzy Mamdani-type inference system. The main input data, on the basis of which a fuzzy conclusion is realized to establish the degree of influence of various environmental factors on the technical condition of buildings and structures, are systematized and presented in a form acceptable for processing by computerized systems. At the same time, the main focus is on the study of facilities that are built and operated on subsidence loess soils. The process of formalization of heuristics, which is based on the formation of associations related to information on the position of signs of deterioration of the technical condition of the objects of expertise and the position of the changed soil, is described. Examples of interpretation and fuzzification of input information on soil properties, characteristics of the soil base of the object of building-technical expertise, and the surrounding area are given. The described approach provides an opportunity to reduce the risks of making wrong decisions by using the system as an intelligent database. The use of an artificial fuzzy neural network of the Cascade ARTMAP category gives the system the ability to form an expert conclusion on the degree of influence of various environmental factors on the technical condition of objects in the fuzzy conditions of a partially observed environment.

Résumé :
Over the last 10-15 years, Russia has faced a significant increase in the scope of reconstruction work (including restoration and overhaul) for buildings of various purposes aiming to extend the life cycle of existing facilities and to bring buildings in line with requirements of modern regulatory documents in terms of strength and increase in their energy efficiency. Strengthening the building structures with composite materials is by far the most ‘gentle’ method of restoring building structures and improving their operational performance. At the same time, there is only a small number of publications generalizing this type of strenghtening in the domestic scientific and technical literature. During the operation of buildings and structures (especially industrial ones) numerous factors cause accelerated degradation in building structures. This phenomenon is particulary strong in reinforced concrete structures due to their composite base. Practice shows that corrosive damage is one of the main factors of intensive constuction degradation of reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, these damages are caused by manufacturing defects (reduction of concrete protective layer), loss of concrete-against-reinforcement protective properties due to carbonization or damage. Corrosive damage greatly reduces the life capability and durability of reinforced concrete structures, which in turn leads to a decrease in the safety of construction site operations.

Résumé :
This article offers a contribution to the sociology of social science knowledge practices and expertise through the empirical lens of US nation building policies. Drawing on archival materials, including the State Department's Freedom of Information Act documents, and interviews with key policymakers we offer a comparative historical sociology of the US State Department as a site of nation building knowledge and expertise. In examining the evolving character of nation building expertise in three key moments across the twentieth century, we find that as nation building expertise and its attendant knowledge practices were redefined and institutionally relocated, the essential character of the expertise and data collection practices that were valorized shifted from social scientism in the 1910s to geopolitical empiricism in the 1940s to liberal legalism in the 1990s. This changing character of nation building knowledge practices at the State Department had an effect on the substance of US nation building policy.

Résumé :
Unauthorized construction, including unauthorized reconstruction, is a frequent violation of building and land management norms in the regulation of low-rise residential development in the Russian Federation. Giving the status of legality to such buildings is possible only in court, which is always accompanied by a judicial land management (cadastral) examination. At the same time, there are currently no requirements for its implementation. The author also observes a tendency for a lack of a unified approach to measurements, to state cadastral registration and to the life cycle of an unauthorizedly reconstructed building. In this article, using the example of the analysis of compliance with the distances from newly erected walls or other elements of the construction object in the process of (unauthorized) reconstruction to the boundaries of the land plot and to neighboring buildings, for the first time, an approach to the forensic land management examination of this type is systematized.

Résumé :
The current development of smart buildings is conditioned by the development of smart technologies, bringing many new phenomena into the construction industry that change ownership, user and management environments. The optimized and truly functional smart building already includes engineering and non-technical aspects, which must, however, be respected during all life cycles. This requires the emergence of completely new expertise or the extension of the existing expertise, including facility management. Smart buildings enable cost savings and facilitated operation to facility management. Moreover, smart buildings also contain significant multidisciplinarity, especially in pertaining technical areas. This requires the facility manager to monitor individual disciplines and ensure their interoperability and optimal functioning to meet the needs of building users. This contribution is based on practical experiences and focuses on the analysis of the new demands that smart buildings require in management issues, the evaluation of synergies between smart buildings and efficient facility management for maximizing the use of the building and its sustainability. It also quantifies the benefits of facility management for the operation of smart buildings and their utility value, depending on the degree of integration of services.

Résumé :
Abstract Successful research and teaching of discipline genres is based on collaboration among language and learning specialists with expertise in applied linguistics, and subject area specialists with expertise in the knowledge and communication practices of their disciplines. These interdisciplinary collaborations involve experts coming together around an area of shared interest in a community of practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991), where members are committed to building relationships to learn from each other, and in this process build new knowledge (Scardamalia & Bereiter, 2006). This paper aims to identify the kinds of knowledge building negotiations involving a team of discipline staff, academic literacy specialists, and e-learning specialists as they collaborate in the design of online learning materials to support students in writing the laboratory report genre in the discipline of physiology. The data consist of recordings of team members’ spoken interactions, with or without other artefacts, such as storyboards, over a period of nine months as the design for the website evolved. Initial discourse analysis of transcripts, based on the metafunctions from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) (Halliday, 1985a), is used to identify phases where the emphasis is on the negotiation of ideational, or content meanings, enabled by interpersonal and textual meanings. A sample of these phases is then analysed in detail using exchange structure (Martin, 1992) to identify possible genres which build new knowledge and embody it in the online resources.

Résumé :
In the HealthMap project for People With HIV, (PWHIV) designers employed a collaborative rapid ‘persona-building' workshop with health researchers to develop patient personas that embodied patient-centred design goals and contextual awareness from a variety of qualitative and quantitative data. On reflection, this collaborative rapid workshop was a process for drawing together the divergent user research insights and expertise of stakeholders into focus for a chronic disease self-management design. This paper discusses, (i) an analysis of the transcript of the workshop and, (ii) interviews with five practising senior designers, in order to reflect on how the persona-building process was enacted and its role in the HealthMap design evolution. The collaborative rapid persona-building methodology supported: embedding user research insights, eliciting domain expertise, introducing design thinking, facilitating stakeholder collaboration and defining early design requirements. The contribution of this paper is to model the process of collaborative rapid persona-building and to introduce the collaborative rapid persona-building framework as a method to generate design priorities from domain expertise and user research data.

Résumé :
People place more value on advice from others whom they view as expert; however, the ways in which advisors might increase perceptions of their expertise through language choice remains unclear. This article examines a married partner’s ability to influence perceptions of their expertise, and consequent advice outcomes, by making explicit claims about past experience with a problem. Two experimental studies tested the effects of experience claims across work versus family problem contexts and examined dimensions of relational communication as mediators. Findings demonstrated that experience claims have the potential to affect evaluations of the spouse’s expertise and evaluations of advice; however, this effect varied based on problem context. Results suggested that statements about previous experience with work problems may improve advice outcomes, whereas experience claims in the context of family problems lead to less positive perceptions of advice. Perceived advisor empathy mediated the negative association between experience claims and advice outcomes.

Résumé :
Architecture Culture, Humanitarian Expertise: From the Tropics to Shelter, 1953–93 recovers a history of architecture and humanitarianism through an examination of institutions and the development of a subfield of professional practice. Charting mutual interest between major humanitarian agencies and the architecture and planning professions, Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi maps the joint construction of expertise, tying together three sets of concerns: preoccupations with the tropics and climate as anchor points for the science and rationalization behind building design, the institutionalization of humanitarian spatial expertise in the academy and industry, and a tension between models for development and for relief. This joint activity and its discursive themes, from the “tropics” to “shelter”—whether aggrandizing or instrumentalizing the shared mission of architecture and humanitarianism—raised the stakes for architectural expertise as a driver for practice as well as history.

Résumé :
Online discussion forums for patients offer the benefits of community but the risks of misinformation. A physician-moderated forum may help to mitigate this tension. How do both the professional expertise of a physician moderator and the personal, experiential expertise of patients contribute to trust in a forum? A rhetorical analysis of a year of postings in an online Parkinson’s community reveals that both forms of expertise were trusted, demonstrating the possibility for them to complement each other. This study illustrates the broader ways trust is established in patient communities and offers implications for technical communicators as forum designers or moderators.

Résumé :
The understanding of expert knowledge as shared, distributed and contextualised has gained ground. The case description in this article focuses on developing expert knowledge in a situation in which both knowledge needs and the definition of expertise fields changed radically in the public sector within a social crisis. The article examines an educational process against the idea of a knowledge‐building community as defined by Bereiter and Scardamalia in 1993. The aim is to highlight the pattern and flow of a progressive discourse. Alongside the idea of a knowledge‐building community, Boland and Tenkasi's 1995 notion of perspective taking and perspective making is utilised. The article discusses the factors that contributed to the success of discussion in the setting in which the target group was characterised by the transcending of organisational boundaries and expertise fields.
