Résumé :
The ArgumentThis paper sets out a framework for understanding how the scientific community constructs computer simulation as an epistemically and pragmatically useful methodology. The framework is based on comparisons between simulation and the loosely-defined categories of “theoretical work” and “experimental work.” Within that framework, the epistemological adequacy of simulation arises from its role as a mathematical manipulation of a complex, abstract theoretical model. To establish that adequacy demands a detailed “theoretical” grasp of the internal structure of the computer program. Simultaneously, the pragmatic usefulness of simulation arises from its role as a “virtual laboratory.” That role is made possible by black-boxing the internal structure of the program, such that the scientist can interact with the computer in an intuitive, “experimental” manner. Thus simulation is rendered authoritative, opening up encoded theories to a novel, “experimental” type of manipulation.

Résumé :
From the formation stages of the information society to the present day, new developments have been experienced in many areas such as data formation, processing, storage and sharing of data in electronic environments. In this context, many new technological concepts have been included in our lives. When it comes to data storage environments, the concept of "Cloud Computing", which has been developing and increasing in popularity in recent years, comes to our minds. Cloud computing, with its known definition, is an internet-based technology service that provides access to the data stored on its servers at any time through internet access and allows users to benefit from the services offered by the system to the extent they want. While the advantages of cloud computing systems such as low cost, high performance, not requiring physical materials and being flexible can be mentioned, it is also emphasized that it brings many problems in terms of system. The most important of these problems; the lack of resources in cloud computing service providers, causing unpredictable delays in server response times. Based on all this information, this research is structured on the development of solution processes on these delays. In this sense, it is possible to consider three areas of cloud infrastructure; cloud computing, distributed storage and streaming communications. One of the first solutions that comes to mind is duplicating a task on multiple machines and waiting for the earliest copy to finish can reduce service latency; but intuitively, it costs additional computing resources and increases the queue load on servers. In this context, the effect of redundancy on the tail will be analyzed in the first part of the research. As a solution proposal, in this section, it will be discussed that service delays and queue load can be reduced by using the replication method, thus making the system more efficient. In a similar way, by requesting more than one copy of a file and waiting for any of them to arrive, the cloud storage requests will be accelerated for content download. In the second part of the research, generalization will be made from replication to coding and the (n, k) fork-join model will be studied to analyze the delay in accessing a storage system with (n, k) deletion code. This analysis will provide practical information that several users can access a content at the same time and provide faster service to the relevant users. Achieving low latency in streaming communication is even more difficult, as packets must be transmitted quickly and sequentially. Based on this structure, in the third part of the research, it is aimed to develop deletion codes to transmit redundant packet combinations and ensure smooth playback. Experimental modeling method was used as a research method in the study. In general, the aim of the research is to blend various mathematical tools from queuing, theory coding and renewal processes. It is foreseen that the techniques and insights to be developed with these dimensions of the research can be applied to other systems with stochastically changing components, and integrated studies can be made and contribute to the literature in this context.

Résumé :
Laboratory experiments, well established in sociology and social psychology, are alternate realities constructed for assessing derivations from theories. Experiments instantiate a theory's scope and initial conditions, and that information is usually delivered through instructions to participants. Because experiments often use video and computer technology and often test very precise predictions of new theories, we suggest developing objective means to assess information delivery. We illustrate these points by reference to a widely used standard experiment to assess theories of status processes. We first describe elements of good experimental design with their justifications. Next, we describe new techniques we have developed and illustrate their usefulness, showing results of a first use of the new techniques. While the assessment still relies somewhat on judgments, we find the technique useful and suggest further developments that might improve it for experimental and other research uses.

Résumé :
The study of causal relations has recently been applied to the quantum realm, leading to the discovery that not all physical processes have a definite causal structure. While indefinite causal processes have previously been experimentally shown, these proofs relied on the quantum description of the experiments. Yet, the same experimental data could also be compatible with definite causal structures within different descriptions. Here, we present the first demonstration of indefinite temporal order outside of quantum formalism. We show that our experimental outcomes are incompatible with a class of generalised probabilistic theories satisfying the assumptions of locality and definite temporal order. To this end, we derive physical constraints (in the form of a Bell-like inequality) on experimental outcomes within such a class of theories. We then experimentally invalidate these theories by violating the inequality using entangled temporal order. This provides experimental evidence that there exist correlations in nature which are incompatible with the assumptions of locality and definite temporal order.

Résumé :
Traditional debates about scientific realism tend to focus on issues concerning scientific representation (broadly speaking) and de-emphasize issues concerning scientific intervention. Questions about the relation between theories and the world, the nature of scientific inference, and the structure of scientific explanations have occupied a central place in the realism debate, while questions about experimentation and technology have not. Ian Hacking's experimental realism attempts to reverse this trend by shifting the defense of realism away from representation to intervention. Experimental realism, according to Hacking, does not require us to believe that our theories are true (or approximately true), nor does its defense depend on inference to the best explanation. For Hacking, the strongest proof for realism is that we can manipulate objects: 'So far as I'm concerned, if you can spray them, then they are real' (ibid., 23).

Résumé :
In the design of coastal structures and the study of nearshore dynamics, rational predictions of the wave kinematics are very important but difficult procedures. Although a large number of nonlinear wave theories have been proposed and used for computing the wave kinematics, there are no theories applicable from the deep water to very shallow water. It is, therefore, very important for coastal researchers and engineers to know which of theories describe well a wave field specified by the wave characteristics and water depth, and to select a particular wave theory for a problem of interest. Many intensive efforts have been made to examine the validity as well as the applicability of various wave theories. However, there are still no well-accepted guidlines for the application range of the wave theories. The validity evaluation of a particular wave theory has been basically made by means of the following two versions: the analytical (mathematical) validity and the experimental (physical) validity. The analytical validity study has been conducted by various researchers (Dean, 1970; Komar, 1976; Horikawa et al., 1977; Swart, 1978) and revealed the degree of mathematical satisification to the governing equations and boundary conditions for each wave theory. The analytical validity study probably tends to show the relative applicability for various wave theories. It does not ensure that the theory describe well laboratory or field phenomena. Based on the analytical validity of various wave theories by Horikawa et al., Isobe (1985) proposed application ranges for the finite amplitude wave theories in terms of the relative water depth and relative wave height. The experimental validity refers to how well the prediction of various wave theories agrees with actual measurements (Dean & Dalrymple, 1984). As the wave shoals, wave form becomes more asymmetrical, especially under high wave conditions of interest to design. Such nonlinearity influences greatly the wave kinematics and it makes difficult to predict readily the wave kinematics by several theories. From a practical viewpoint, it is , therefore, requested to establish the application ranges of available wave theories for shoaling waves.

PPN-limit of alternative theories of gravity represents a still controversial matter of debate and no definitive answer has been provided, up to now, about this issue. By using the definition of the PPN-parameters γ and β in terms of f(R) theories of gravity, we show that a family of third-order polynomial theories, in the Ricci scalar R, turns out to be compatible with the PPN-limit and the deviation from General Relativity, theoretically predicted, can agree with experimental data.

The technique of measuring residual strain using X-ray diffractometry is examined with respect to prior attempts to experimentally validate couple-stress or micropolar theories. When subjected to grinding, polycrystalline materials (such as steel or others of technical interest) exhibit residual strains with very peculiar features whose explanation is still controversial. This paper suggests how a formally correct explanation can be formulated in terms of the theories based on couple-stresses. This new hypothesis is critically compared with competing theories found in the recent literature. It is proposed that, for the case of thin layers subjected to extremely high stress gradients, X-ray diffractometry is the most appropriate technique for investigating couple-stress or micropolar phenomena.

Résumé :
In this paper, I am presenting Devitt?s Expertise Defence and the Modest Theory of Intuitions as a response to Machery, Mallon, Nichols, and Stich?s claims that the method of cases is flawed and that we should consult folk intuitions in supporting theories of reference, which they in turn support by experimental data that referential intuitions differ cross-culturally. Some authors present Devitt?s response and his own project as an attempt to keep a moderate position between armchair philosophy and experimental philosophy that Machery et al. advocate, as he defends the position that although intuitions are not universally reliable, experts? intuitions are more reliable and could potentially be used for supporting adequate theories. In turn, I will try to show why Devitt?s Expertise Defence should only be considered as a negative project aimed at criticising both armchair and experimental philosophy based on testing folk intuitions, and why he does not have to fully justify the Modest Theory of Intuitions, and that is sufficient to introduce it as a further alternative in order to successfully object to mentioned styles of philosophy. I will support this view by using Ramsey and Cummins?s objections against the possibility of establishing a proper account of the reliability of any kind of intuitions. In the end, I will consider Devitt?s request to test language usage and to explore linguistic reality in theorising about language as the only proper part of his positive program and reconsider the role of philosophy of language that is forbidden to rely on intuitions.

Résumé :
The explosive development of modern technology and the increasing societal awareness of technological risks are enforcing a more rigorous approach to the development of engineering theories, experiments, and design procedures. The recent progress in the theories and techniques of measurements has exposed various deficiencies of procedures of experimental and analytical mechanics. Major patterns of the rapidly emerging system of theories and experimental and analytical procedures based on scientific methodology -- which is called “advanced experimental mechanics” -- are outlined. The strong interdependence of advanced experimental mechanics, contemporary analytical mechanics and modern trends in applied materials science is illustrated by examples. Major issues are discussed within the framework of the modern scientific methodology formulated by Karl Popper, of Thomas Kuhn’s notion of paradigm in science, of Niels Bohr’s correspondence principle, and of the requirement of reliability of engineering procedures in mechanics imposed by socio-economic factors.

Résumé :
The purpose of the present study was to examine the utility of the resource notion, which is the basis for the secondary task technique of workload assessment. The unbiased optimum-maximum method proposed by Navon (1984) was used to manipulate task priority without conveying to the subjects that time-shared performance must tradeoff. Three task pairs that fell on a continuum of degree of shared resources were tested. The data showed that performance tradeoff is not an experimental artifact. Moreover, the data suggested that increased degree of shared resources led to increased resource allocation optimality and decreased time-sharing efficiency, as predicted by multiple resource theories. The present data suggests that resource theories are useful in explaining dual task performance, and that the secondary task can be a useful workload assessment tool.
