Résumé :
Nine-link type double-toggle mold/die clamping mechanisms are widely used in modern injection molding machines and die casting machines in order to provide sufficient mold/die clamping force for counteracting the pressure occurred inside molds/dies. In this paper, the analysis and experimental evaluation of mechanical errors in nine-link type double-toggle mold/die clamping mechanisms are presented. The kinematic error equations of the output link (i.e., the moving platen) caused by dimensional errors (or tolerances) of link members are derived analytically through the concept of tolerance sensitivity analysis. Evaluation indices based on the asymmetry of the mold/die clamping mechanism caused by mechanical errors are established. A case study is then given to demonstrate the derived analytical equations and the established evaluation indices. Subsequently, a prototype for performing the experimental evaluation is conceptually designed and was actually constructed. Experiments were conducted for evaluating the quantitative influence of mechanical errors on the operating performance of the constructed mold/die clamping mechanism. According to the experimental results, response surface modelling for benefiting the constructed mold/die clamping mechanism with better operating performance could be performed. The presented research results will be helpful in the tolerance analysis and mechanical error detection of nine-link type double-toggle mold/die clamping mechanisms.

Résumé :
The use of stationary waterjet for the removal of coating material from the substrate is investigated analytically and experimentally. In the analysis, the cleaning width as a function of standoff distance, water pressure, and nozzle radius is derived by considering the structure of waterjet and the cleaning mechanism. Also derived are the relations of the optimal cleaning standoff distance and maximum cleaning width to the critical cleaning standoff distance, and how the water pressure and nozzle radius affect this critical standoff distance. These derived analytical relations are verified with experimental results.

Résumé :
Abstract. In this paper, a novel parallel leaf-spring carrying mechanism (PLCM) is investigated using a compliance-matrix-based approach. For the analytical modeling and attitude calculation, the geometric errors of the flexible arm, including the height and the top plane's direction, are considered, and the displacement method is used to calculate the equilibrium attitude. The influence of the equilibrium attitude at different heights and the initial tilts of the top planes are analyzed separately. The validity and effectiveness of the attitude calculation are illustrated by experimental verification. The laser triangulation coordinate method is used for attitude measurement. The deviations of the normal vector between the calculation results and measurement results are smaller than 2×10-4, which is small enough to satisfy practical requirements. This can be used to guarantee stable and accurate wafer transfer in a lithography machine. Therefore, it can be concluded that the methods employed for analytical model establishment and attitude calculation can be used as a reference for the analysis and design of a complex parallel compliant mechanism.

Résumé :
In recent years, the scientific community has focused its interest on innovative inorganic matrix composite materials, namely TRM (Textile Reinforced Mortar). This class of materials satisfies the need of retrofitting existing masonry buildings, by keeping the compatibility with the substrate. Different recent studies were addressed to improve the knowledge on their mechanical behaviour and some theoretical models were proposed for predicting the tensile response of TRM strips. However, this task is complex due to the heterogeneity of the constituent materials and the stress transfer mechanism developed between matrix and fabric through the interface in the cracked stage. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on the existing constitutive models for the tensile behavior of TRM composites. Literature experimental results of tensile tests on TRM coupons are presented and compared with the most relevant analytical models proposed until now. Finally, a new experimental study is presented and its results are used to further verify the reliability of the literature expressions.

Résumé :
To provide a precise model of dynamic components in the constant pressure pump, and to improve the accuracy of dynamic calculation of the constant-pressure hydraulic system in its design stage, the research undertook mapping on a particular constant pressure pump and determined its basic structural parameters. Then, with the AMESim software, the research adopted separate structures from the level of basic components to establish the model of single-piston pump, the model of variable displacement pump, and the model of adjustable mechanism for the swashplate, respectively. The three models were combined with the constant-pressure variable displacement pump before it was encapsulated in a super component. By controlling the flow discharge of the constant pressure pump, and by switching on and off the constant pressure valve with the internal and long-distance pressure control, the research undertook the simulative test and the corresponding experimental test on the characteristics of pressure response of the constant pressure pump. The results of both tests agreed well with each other. Thus, it verifies the precision of the established constant pressure pump model in performing accurately in response design and analytical calculation.

Along with social progress, people pay attention to health. Modern people choose the gym to maintain posture and body functions well, therefore, the gym popularize everywhere. Popularity of expensive fitness equipment to bring a lot of convenience, but different users share of fitness equipment have different condition, often caused damage by use, which is the most important factor for the material fatigue damage. This study chose the exercise bike parts “self run bushing” to create a fatigue life assessment mechanism. In this study, to the fatigue analysis was conducted, by using finite element analysis according to the material S-N curve and Miner cumulative damage theory in a series of cyclic loading. To analyze fatigue life, analytical and experimental studies through mutual verification were conducted which can obtain the expectation life period of the self run bushing. The load spectrum based on different user can also be considered in this study. Based on the design frequency from different users, after the study of distribution of reliability and failure, the most appropriate time-out and the best replacement time can be obtained.

Résumé :
Progress in the field of biocompatible SERS nanoparticles has promising prospects for biomedical applications. In this work, we have developed a biocompatible Raman probe by combining anisotropic silver nanoparticles with the dye rhodamine 6G followed by subsequent coating with bovine serum albumin. This nanosystem presents strong SERS capabilities in the near infrared (NIR) with a very high (2.7 × 107) analytical enhancement factor. Theoretical calculations reveal the effects of the electromagnetic and chemical mechanisms in the observed SERS effect for this nanosystem. Finite element method (FEM) calculations showed a considerable near field enhancement in NIR. Using density functional quantum chemical calculations, the chemical enhancement mechanism of rhodamine 6G by interaction with the nanoparticles was probed, allowing us to calculate spectra that closely reproduce the experimental results. The nanosystem was tested in cell culture experiments, showing cell internalization and also proving to be completely biocompatible, as no cell death was observed. Using a NIR laser, SERS signals could be detected even from inside cells, proving the applicability of this nanosystem as a biocompatible SERS probe.

Résumé :
Abstract An approach to engineering education that integrates traditional analytical techniques, modern computational software, and physical hardware has been developed at Bucknell University. This paper describes the implementation of this approach in a juniorlevel required course in mechanism analysis. The content of the course supplements textbook material with computational and experimental laboratory exercises. The computational components of the laboratories are based primarily on the use of the software package Working Model and, to a lesser extent, Pro/JR. Three particular laboratories are described in detail in the paper. The laboratories seek to develop and reinforce the view that textbook analysis techniques and sophisticated computer software are merely tools and only useful if applied intelligently. Moreover, the laboratories emphasize the need for validation and verification in engineering design and analysis. The integrated interactive environment provided in the laboratories not only allows students to quickly see the limits of analytical and computational techniques but also to gain a firsthand understanding of the performance of actual mechanisms.

Résumé :
An experimental set-up has been constructed for medium scale impact tests. The main objective of this effort is to provide data for the calibration and verification of numerical models of a loading scenario where an aircraft impacts against a nuclear power plant. One goal is to develop and take in use numerical methods for predicting response of reinforced concrete structures to impacts of deformable projectiles that may contain combustible liquid (“fuel”). Loading, structural behaviour, like collapsing mechanism and the damage grade, will be predicted by simple analytical methods and using non-linear FE-method. In the so-called Riera method the behavior of the missile material is assumed to be rigid plastic or rigid visco-plastic. Using elastic plastic and elastic visco-plastic material models calculations are carried out by ABAQUS/Explicit finite element code, assuming axisymmetric deformation mode for the missile. With both methods, typically, the impact force time history, the velocity of the missile rear end and the missile shortening during the impact were recorded for comparisons.

Résumé :
In this paper the hydrodynamic parameters that characterize the behavior of a typical unmanned underwater vehicle are evaluated. A complete method for identifying these parameters is described. The method is developed to give a brief and accurate estimate of these parameters in all six degrees of freedom using basic properties of the vehicle such as dimensions, mass and shape. The method is based on both empirical and analytical results for typical reference geometries (ellipsoids, cubes, etc.). The method is developed to be applicable for a wide variety of UUV designs as these typically varies substantially. The method is then applied to a small observation class ROV. The results are first verified using an experimental method in which the full scale ROV is towed using a planar motion mechanism. An additional verification is performed with numerical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics and a radiation/diffraction program. The method shows promising results for both damping and added mass for the tested case. The translational degrees of freedom are more accurate than the rotational degrees of freedom which are expected as most empirical and analytical data are for translational degrees of freedom. The case study also reveals that the relative difference between the numerical simulations and the experimental results are similar to the relative difference between the proposed method and the experiment.

Résumé :
Abstract A detail numerical study of detonation propagation and interaction with a flame arrestor product was conducted. The simulation domain was based on the detonation flame arrestor validation test setup. The flame arrestor element was modeled as a porous zone using the Forchheimer equation. The coefficients of the Forchheimer equation were determined using experimental data. The Forchheimer equation was incorporated into the governing equations for axisymmetric reactive turbulent flow as a momentum sink. A 21-step elementary reaction mechanism with 10 species was used to model the stoichiometric oxyhydrogen detonation. Different cases of detonation propagation including inviscid, viscous adiabatic, and viscous with heat transfer and a porous zone were studied. A detail discussion of the detonation propagation and effect of the arrestor geometry, the heat transfer and the porous zone are presented. The inviscid numerical model solutions of the detonation propagation parameters are compared to one-dimensional analytical solution for verification. The viscous solutions are qualitatively compared to historical experimental data which shows very similar trend. The effect of the porous media parameters on shock transmission and re-initiation of detonation is presented.

Résumé :
The flow induced erosion-corrosion of a hydrocracking reactor effluent air cooler (REAC) system normally occurs locally and abruptly, which leads to the high risk of unplanned shutdown and even catastrophic accidents. To study the typical failure cases induced by the high-sulfur and chloride-containing raw oil in the process of refining, numerical simulation of technical process and fluid dynamics parameters are performed on softwares of HYSYS and CFD, and the rules of multiphase flow erosion and ammonium salts deposition are analyzed. Analytical results are in good agreement with actual failure instance and thus the reliability of the predictive method is validated. A corrosion-control research system, consisting of mechanism research, numerical simulation, experimental verification and similarity theory correction, is established. The critical characteristics of multiphase flow deposition and erosion are obtained. And the system to control the flow induced erosion-corrosion, which can be widely applied in various conditions, is formed on the basis of “avoiding blockage and controlling erosion” conception. Moreover, this paper proposes an optimum design based on the degree of unbalancedness and a frame of the REAC Real-time Diagnosis Expert Software for guiding the optimum design. The method above will be beneficial to the promotion and modification of related criteria and regulations in the future.

Résumé :
Ask a mechanical designer, especially those dealing with robotics, what are the two main limitations when designing a new autonomous small mechanism. The answer will most likely be the need for better small-size actuation devices and better and smaller energy sources. Indeed, these two factors impose most of the constraints to designers, reflected in the size of the device, the forces it can apply, its achievable workspace, and the time duration it can work when not connected to a permanent energy source. Usually these parameters are in conflict with each other, that is, a small motor has somewhat low output torque and power, while a motor that can generate a large amount of torque is usually large in size and consumes a lot of power. Consequently, every mechanism designer is eager to design a small actuator that generates a large amount of torque while it simultaneously consumes a reasonable amount of energy. This report explains our efforts in developing an inflatable actuator having a small size yet can apply relatively large torque where at the same time can cover a large workspace. The inflatable actuator is shaped as a bellow which is composed of two materials with different shear modulus—one has high elasticity and the other low. By applying pressure inside the bellow, each of the materials tends to deform according to Hooke’s law, resulting in the bending effect due to the elongation differences between the two materials which are constrained to deform simultaneously. We describe the mechanical concept of the bellow actuator; we also provide an analytical model for the bellow deformation. Experimental results for verification of the model are also presented.

Résumé :
It is noted that while analyzing the tribosystems evolution it is potentially productive to use the methods of modern thermodynamics, nonlinear mechanics and quantum theory. Using the understandings of nonlinear dynamics and quantum-exchange interaction of solids surfaces an analytical expression is obtained for calculating the magnitude change of the tribosystems entropy. The expression for estimating the change in the tribosystems entropy is explicitly contained the tribotechnical parameter that is reciprocal to the wear. The case of relation between the tribosystems entropy change (decrease) and its wear resistance is analytically confirmed. The analytical expression for estimating the entropy change contains only those mechanical and physical parameters that can be measured by using modern physical methods. This allows to do not only an experimental verification of the obtained analytical dependence but also numerically evaluate the influence of the parameters of the tribosystems basic elements and its operating modes on the entropy values. In addition, it is possible to evaluate the tribosystems evolution itself and its constituent elements in the direction of their development or degradation. The obtained in this case data will allow proposing corrective structural and technological measures aimed to extend operational life of degrading elements and the tribosystem as a whole.
