Résumé :
The monograph, on the one hand, examines the period of development of the descending cycle of evolution and the associated progressive changes that show the irreversibility of the processes of formation of the planetary system. The end of one cycle and the beginning of another leads to the transformation of the system of life and the expansion of consciousness at a new energy level. On the other hand, the questions of potential opportunities for the development of the ascending phase of evolution, which goes both along the path of complexity of the organization and along the path of diversity, are considered. In the ascending evolutionary stream, what has been differentiated into the corresponding levels in the descending cycle is brought together and thus prepared to enter into new, more perfect forms of unity. It is shown that the development of humanity along its entire path depends on the interaction of energies of various forms and potentials. Understanding the relationships between different types of energy and their use provides insight into many important issues in the evolution of society. The material introduces the modern features of the existence of the male and female sexes from the energy point of view. The idea of a way out of the current conflict situation that has arisen between the sexes at the present stage of evolution is proposed. It will be useful for those interested in the problems of scientific knowledge, architects, philosophers, historians, physicists and methodologists of science, students and students of secondary schools.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the progression of Brazil’s agriculture since the end of World War II, a period during which a highly concentrated pattern of land distribution remained basically unchanged, despite remarkable changes in agriculture. Three different phases are recognized: a phase of horizontal expansion, up to the early 1970s, in which agriculture remained essentially traditional; a period of substantial but conservative modernization of agriculture, from the early 1970s to the late 1990s; and a phase of consolidation of modernization. It highlights the development of two key elements: a modern segment, usually composed of large farm units; and “traditional agriculture,” constituted mainly of small farms. The chapter discusses their contributions to growing commodity exports and to the supply of food for domestic markets. The chapter concludes by examining events—affecting both the large-scale agriculture and small farm units—that led to the maintenance of the concentrated pattern of land tenure.

Résumé :
This chapter introduces inflation as a phase of nearly exponential expansion in the early universe. The slow-roll conditions are deribed and possible inflationary models are discussed. Reheating connects the end of inflation with the standard hot big-bang model. The spectrum of fluctuations generated by inflation is calculated and it is shown that it is nearly scale-invariant and Gaussian. The fluctuations have fixed phase relations on superhorizon scales that cause characteristic oscillations of the temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background.

Résumé :
This chapter describes elastic scattering events, where the wavelength of the scattered light is unchanged from that of the incident light and conservative scattering, scattering without absorption, sometimes closely approximated in clouds. The scattering regime, scattering versus wavelengths and scatterer size are introduced. Polarization in scattering is described by the Stokes vector and the polarization ellipse. Molecular (Rayleigh) scattering is presented and its atmospherically-important inelastic component, Raman scattering (the Ring effect) quantified. Mie scattering for spherical particles is described as is the commonly-used Henyey-Greenstein Mie phase function approximation. Non-spherical scatterers are introduced. The Ångstrom exponent and the expansion of phase functions in Legendre polynomials are described.

Résumé :
Chapter 8 investigates the second phase of Lazarist expansion under de Paul, as he oversaw the foundation of twelve more houses in the French provinces, beginning with a new house in Cahors in late 1643 and concluding with the establishment of a house in Narbonne in 1659. Three themes form the main concerns of the chapter: the first is the emergence of seminary management as a major element of the Lazarists’ activities, and the second is the significance of episcopal patronage to their expansion; third, the chapter trains a critical eye on the origins, features, and fruits of the relations that de Paul cultivated with founders and donors to expand the Lazarist infrastructure.

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on Liouville’s theorem and classical statistical mechanics, deriving the classical propagator. The terms ‘phase space volume element’ and ‘Liouville operator’ are defined and an n-particle phase space probability density function is constructed to derive the Liouville equation. This is deconstructed into the BBGKY hierarchy, and radial distribution functions are used to develop n-body correlation functions. Koopman–von Neumann theory is investigated as a classical wavefunction approach. The chapter develops an operatorial mechanics based on classical Hilbert space, and discusses the de Broglie–Bohm formulation of quantum mechanics. Partition functions, ensemble averages and the virial theorem of Clausius are defined and Poincaré’s recurrence theorem, the Gibbs H-theorem and the Gibbs paradox are discussed. The chapter also discusses commuting observables, phase–amplitude decoupling, microcanonical ensembles, canonical ensembles, grand canonical ensembles, the Boltzmann factor, Mayer–Montroll cluster expansion and the equipartition theorem and investigates symplectic integrators, focusing on molecular dynamics.

Résumé :
To set the scene for the Second Law, this (non-mathematical) chapter explores our experience of spontaneous changes - such as the expansion of a gas into a vacuum, mixing, phase changes and many chemical reactions - demonstrating that they are all irreversible, and proceed unidirectionally from non-equilibrium states to equilibrium states. Furthermore, they all comply with the First Law. The First Law therefore cannot be used as a predictor of spontaneity. What, then, can be used as a predictor?
