Caliciviruses are important pathogens of humans and animals. Noroviruses are major causes of foodborne gastroenteritis cases, but their research is hindered due to the inability to grow human noroviruses in cell culture. Detailed studies on entry events of caliciviruses are lacking and may be crucial for development of cell culture models. We examined the entry events of caliciviruses using porcine enteric calicivirus (PEC), feline calicivirus (FCV) and murine norovirus-1 (MNV-1). PEC replication in LLC-PK cells requires bile acid in the medium, but the mechanism is not well understood. Our studies showed that bile acids are required in the early stage of virus replication, and while internalization of PEC is not dependent of them, they are required for endosomal escape and successful replication. Further examination on virus entry, we demonstrated that endosomal acidification and cathepsin L activity are essential in the replication of PEC, FCV and MNV-1. The results showed that inhibition of endosomal acidification or cathepsin L activity led to retention of viruses in the endosomes. Also we demonstrated that recombinant cathepsin L cleaved structural protein of PEC, FCV or MNV-1, which suggests that the enzyme may facilitate uncoating viruses in endosomes. In addition to bile acids, we found that a cold shock treatment during virus entry supported PEC replication by facilitating the endosomal escape. While PEC alone did not induce ceramide formation, bile acids or cold shock treatment induce ceramide formation on endosomes through activation acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), and this event was crucial for virus replication because inhibition of ASM blocked ceramide formation and significantly reduced PEC replication. Incubation of FCV or MNV-1 with cells led to ceramide formation during virus entry, and inhibition of ASM also significantly reduced their replication. Inhibition of ASM led to endosomal retention of PEC, FCV or MNV-1 during virus entry, which may be the reason for the reduction of viral replication. These studies revealed the important and common events during calicivirus entry for successful replication, including virus endosomal escape, cathepsin L activity and ASM/ceramide formation. This detailed information may provide clues for understanding the replication of fastidious caliciviruses and for potential therapeutic targets.

Résumé :
This research describes an analysis, using event-study methodology, of the reaction of the stock returns of a sample, drawn from the one-hundred largest bank holding companies, to certain actions of regulatory agencies. The first part of the analysis examines the reaction of the bank stocks to the closure of the Bank of New England, using cross-sectional variables not previously examined by other investigators. The second event considers the invalidation of interest-rate swap contracts by the British Law Lords, the highest court in Britain. The third case is an examination of the effects of actions taken to enforce the Community Reinvestment Act. All three events have significant abnormal returns in at least one sub-sample and event window. The results of the cross-sectional analysis and the lack of response to later events are consistent with market efficiency in the semi-strong form. The results are also consistent with the hypothesis that regulatory policies that emphasize consistency and banking system safety are desirable.

A great deal of research has scrutinized the mixed legacy of staging "mega-events" such as World's Fairs (or Expos) and Olympic Games. Host cities regularly invest billions of dollars building the facilities and supporting infrastructure needed to accommodate millions of visitors over a fixed period of time. In doing so, they also consume hundreds of acres of land, including large masses of urban space in which core activities are clustered. An analysis of urban mega-events over the past century and a half indicates that numerous host locations have converted core event grounds into large urban parks. This thesis investigates the post-event reuse of urban parks built on these fairgrounds. Through investigative research, interviews, and onsite fieldwork of selected post-event "legacy" parks, prevailing issue areas concerning their viability and accessibility are identified. Drawing on the experiences of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, a large park built on the former grounds of two World's Fairs in New York City, this thesis suggests strategic public space reuse and management approaches for Flushing Meadows and other legacy parks confronting similar challenges. The idea that post-event parks must be preserved as democratic and accessible civic spaces is stressed, particularly in light of increased privatization of the urban public realm.

My study is about opportunities for revolutionary developments in urban transport. Often, we think of transport and urban development as an evolutionary process, yet there exist a few opportunities for cities to revolutionize their transport system within a short timeframe of only 10 years. Prime examples for such opportunities are mega events. Based on my hypothesis that mega event owners exercise a decisive influence on urban and transport planning through the requirements they impose on cities, the challenge inherent to leveraging the mega event opportunity is the alignment of transport provisions for staging a world-class event with the metropolitan vision by using the mega event as a tool for desirable change. In my study I examine the dynamics of the urban-change process in the run-up to mega events by analyzing the potential clash between the event owner's requirements and the development of transport strategies pursued by four cities, which have hosted the largest mega event of all - the Summer Olympic Games. The Olympic cities in my research are Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000), and Athens (2004). I comparatively analyze the extent to which each city did or did not align the planning of preparations for the mega event with the metropolitan strategies for long-term urban and transport development. Through field observations, document analysis, and interviews, I identify the influences the International Olympic Committee (IOC) brings to the transport planning process of metropolises, analyze the Olympic impacts, and finally propose a causal model linking IOC influences and urban transport outcomes.
(cont.) I find that the influence of IOC produces a similar pattern of urban and transport change. I explain further why and under what conditions the event requirements can function as catalysts for transport investments, integration of transport systems, upgrades of institutional coordination, and management capacities. If planned effectively, event transport strategies can bring significant long-term enhancement in regional mobility. Existing theories of urban development do not fully capture the interdependencies among factors operating before, during and after mega events. My research suggests that the IOC is a powerful agent in local urban and transport plannning that guides cities towards similar urban change in the run-up to the Olympics. To leverage mega event opportunities for transport, I provide policy recommendations on the alignment of event transport requirements and metropolitan strategy. Given the high investment costs and associated risks, city governments should catalyze their endeavors for improved metropolitan transport through the city's bid that can ultimately enhance metropolitan transport for users on a daily basis.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to examine the structure of the event process on Cal Poly’s campus. An intrinsic case study method was used, and data were collected and analyzed using triangulation from three sources of information: documents, interviews, and participation research. Overall, the structure of the event management process on campus was found to be stable, but could use improvement. Cal Poly should consider establishing a specific, designated organization that would help centralize the event management process at Cal Poly. This organization could be in charge of training and updating event managers, approving events, monitoring volume of events on campus at a specific time, holding event managers accountable to following policies, and maintaining a website that would act as a hub for all event-related materials.

The Australian National University. Research School of Earth Sciences, 2001. http://thesis.anu.edu.au./public/adt-ANU20010925.152548.

Résumé :
The aim of this thesis is to develop procedures for the modelling and inversion of teleseismic P and S waveforms which are as flexible as possible. This flexibility is necessary in order to obtain accurate source depth and mechanism estimates for small to moderate size events, such as those that are relevant in the context of monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). ¶ The main challenge for extending source depth and mechanism inversion methods to smaller events is to ensure that sufficiently accurate synthetic seismograms are available for comparison with observed records. An accurate phase-adaptive reflectivity method has therefore been developed, against which the performance of less computationally intensive approximations can be judged. The standard reflectivity method has been modified to allow for different crustal and upper mantle structures at the source and receiver, and the full effects of reverberations and conversions in these structures can be allowed for. Core reflections and refractions can also be included; these phases can become important at certain distance ranges. A slowness bundle approach has been developed, where a restricted slowness integration about the geometric slowness for the direct wave is undertaken at each frequency, allowing accurate results to be obtained whilst avoiding the expense of a full reflectivity technique. ¶ Inversion using the neighbourhood algorithm (NA) is performed for source depth, mechanism and time function, by modelling direct P and S and their surface reflections (pP, sP and pS, sS) at teleseismic distances. Both SV and SH data are exploited in the inversion, in addition to P data, in order to obtain improved constraints on the source mechanism, including any isotropic component. Good results are obtained using a simple generalised ray scheme, however, the use of a flexible derivative-free inversion method means that more accurate synthetics are able to be used in the inversion where appropriate. The NA makes use of only the rank of the data misfits, so that it is possible to employ any suitable misfit criterion. In the few cases where control on the source mechanism is limited, good depth resolution is still usually obtained. ¶The structures near the source and receiver play an important role in shaping the detail of the teleseismic waveforms. Although reasonable results can be achieved with simple synthetics and a standard velocity model, significant improvement can be made by modifying the representation of structure near the source and receiver. In the case of sub-oceanic events it is important to allow for the effects of water reverberations. The crustal structure near the receiver can also have quite a large influence on the waveforms through reverberations and conversions. This is exploited in receiver function inversion, which is again accomplished using the NA approach.

POLESEL, ANDREA. « Studies on a PET module prototype for the recovery of Compton events ».

In this thesis we will present different studies carried out on a prototype of PET module detector with pixelated crystals, light sharing and single side readout. A dedicated experimental setup was initially developed and characterised, in order to satisfy all the requirements in terms of spatial, energy and time resolution. This setup allows multiple channels readout with parallel chains for energy and time measurement and various possibilities for automation given by several possible mechanics arrangement. The flexibility of this setup allowed to perform all the successive studies using the same Data Acquisition electronics and software. Moreover, it opens up the possibilities for further tests on multi-channels detectors and on image reconstruction. The first application of this setup was the improvement of the Coincidence Time Resolution of the PET module exploiting Depth Of Interaction information. The contribution to the time resolution due to different speed of gamma and optical photons inside the detector was mitigated with an algorithm that only requires a calibration measurement compared to the DOI capable prototype used. To achieve the best possible time resolution in this configuration, multiple time stamps were combined to obtain a better time of interaction estimator. This work is particularly interesting for possible application in high resolution PET scanners, because it relies on single side readout and requires production costs only slightly higher compared to a similar existing module without DOI capability. Moreover, an algorithm was developed to correctly identify the crystal of first interaction in case of Inter-Crystal Scatter events. These are events in which the primary gamma photon interacts with multiple channels of the PET detector. Different approaches to the subject are found in literature; one of these is to use an algorithm to sort the energy depositions. This is the approach used in this study: a new algorithm was developed, preliminary tested by means of Geant4 simulations and later applied on the PET module previously developed using the experimental setup originally described. The possibility to include ICS event with good accuracy would allow to increase sensitivity or image quality depending on the method to whom this approach is compared to. The long term possibilities of this algorithm will be discussed further at the end of this thesis.

Using Dayan and Kat's theory of "media events" - those historic and powerful live broadcasts that mesmerise mass audiences - this thesis assesses the socio-political effect of live broadcasting on South Africa's transition to democracy and the effects of such broadcasts on post-apartheid nationhood. The thesis follows events chronologically and employs a three-part approach: firstly, it looks at the planning behind some of the mass televised events, secondly, it analyses the televisual content of some of the events; and thirdly it assesses public responses to events, as articulated in newspapers at the time.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between stress and perimenstrual symptoms. Stress was studied in terms of major life events, self-reported anxiety, and blood cortisol levels. Fifteen women who demonstrated negative affect perimenstrual symptoms and seventeen women who were identified as asymptomatic charted their symptoms daily for three menstrual cycles. During this time, state anxiety and blood cortisol levels were measured twice a week. The results of this study support a positive relationship between stressful life events, trait anxiety, state anxiety, and perimenstrual symptoms. However, cortisol levels were not correlated with either perimenstrual symptoms or state anxiety. There was a difference between the symptomatic and the asymptomatic groups in terms of stressful life events and trait anxiety. There was also a significant difference in state anxiety between the two groups when measured during the perimenstrual phase, however, not during the postmenstrual phase. There were no significant changes in cortisol levels between groups or cycle phases.

Résumé :
A growing number of studies acknowledge the effect that sport events have on its surrounding environment as well as the effect the surroundings have on sport events. This has led to a larger focus on environmental sustainability within event organisations, something that however is motivated in very diverse ways and from different perspectives. This thesis, therefore, explores motivations behind the incorporation of environmentally sustainable actions within Swedish recreational sport events, and aim to provide an overview of how it is implemented within their operations. This has been done by a qualitative multiple case study with comparative elements. An outline of earlier research of motivational factors towards sustainable actions does together with an elaboration of central concepts, provide a theoretical background for the case study. The theoretical background has been further used to create an analytical framework with three main themes of motivation ‘strategic’, ‘pressure’ and ‘moral/ethical’. The cases, Vasaloppet and Vätternrundan, has been explored through face to face interviews with specific employees of the event organisations and later analysed through the analytical framework of the thesis. In addition to the interviews, documents regarding their sustainability work have together with the information that could be found on the web pages of the two events been analysed through the themes of the analytical framework. The results show a close similarity when it comes to the main challenges they are facing. Both Vasaloppet and Vätternrundan have transport as their main source of environmental impact, and the trash generated along the arena is another main challenge in order to reduce littering. Out of the three main themes of motivation, the moral and ethical motivation proved to be the main one, whereas the strategic and pressuring motivations came second and were in many cases closely entwined and related to each other. A difference in motivational background is further expressed by the respondents and policy documents of the event organisations, as Vasaloppet displayed a more proactive attitude while Vätternrundan were more reactive.

Résumé :

It is becoming increasingly difficult, although very important, for companies to reach out to its customers and differentiate themselves in the market place. The main reason is that the competition is extremely intensified and customers can quite easily switch between suppliers. Focusing on relations is a way for companies to overcome some obstacles of competition that is evident in today’s market place. One way for companies to reach its customers, strengthen the relation, and meet them face-to-face is to create events. How-ever, finding the target group and motivating individuals to attend events is an important issue for the companies arranging events. There has to be a match between what the company arranging the event want to communicate and what the invited individual expects to gain out of attending the event. It is further important to direct the event towards certain individuals and also to make sure that the invited people actually attend the event.

The purpose of the thesis is to explore how companies can arrange meaningful events to a targeted audience and examine what factors motivates the individuals to actually attend these events.

An inductive approach is mainly used since it allows for flexible structure where empirical data is collected and before applying appropriate theoretical framework. The authors have further chose to collect data in a qualitative manner as this allows for open ended inter-views which can generate in deeper understanding of the reasons for individuals to attend corporate events. The primary data was based on interviews related to four corporate events previously taking place.

The authors found that there are numerous reasons for creating corporate events mainly because events are a platform that naturally integrates many marketing activities. When targeting individuals a personal contact can increase the likelihood that the invited people will attend an event. The reason is that through direct communication a person has the opportunity to tailor the invitation by explaining the reasons for why this particular person should find the event important and interesting to attend. Corporate events should offer valuable information for the attendees otherwise there is risk that invited individuals will not attend an event. Individuals attend events for the purpose of interacting with representatives from the arranging company as well as people from other attending companies. It can be concluded that a corporate event should be work related in some how and include new information and/or offer networking possibilities.

The protein folding problem involves understanding how the tertiary structure of a protein is related to its primary structure. Hence, understanding the thermodynamics associated with the rate-limiting steps for the formation of the earliest events in folding is most crucial to understanding how proteins adopt native secondary and tertiary structures. In order to elucidate the mechanism and pattern of protein folding, an extensively studied protein, Cytochrome-c (Cc), was chosen as a folding system to obtain detailed time-resolved thermodynamic profiles for the earliest events in the protein folding process. Cytochrome-c is an ideal system for understanding the folding process for several reasons. One being that the system can unfold and refold reversibly without the loss of the covalently attached heme group. A number of studies have shown that under denaturing conditions, ferrous Cc (Fe2+Cc) heme group in the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) results in a disruption of the axial heme Methionine-80 (Met80) bond ultimately unfolding the protein. CO-photolysis of this ferrous species results in the formation of a transient unfolded protein that is poised in a non-equilibrium state with the equilibrium state being that of the native folded Fe2+Cc complex. This allows for the refolding reaction of the protein to be photo-initiated and monitor on ns - ms timescales. While CO cannot bind to the ferric form, nitrogen monoxide (NO) photo-release has been developed to photo-trigger ferric Cc (Fe3+Cc) unfolding under denaturing conditions. Photo-dissociation of NO leaves the Fe3+complex in a conformational state that favors unfolding thus allowing the early unfolding events of Fe3+Cc to be probed. Overall the results presented here involve the use of the ligands CO and NO along with photoacoustic calorimetry (PAC) to photo-trigger the folding/unfolding reaction of Cc (and modified Cc). Thus, obtaining enthalpy and molar volume changes directly associated with the initial folding/unfolding events occurring in the reaction pathways of both Fe2+ and Fe3+Cc systems that are most essential to understanding the driving forces involved in forming the tertiary native conformation. The PAC data shows that folding of proteins results from a hierarchy of events that potentially includes the formation of secondary structures, hydrophobic collapse, and/or reorganization of the tertiary complex occurring over ~ns – tens of µs time ranges. In addition, the PAC kinetic fits presented in this work is the first to report Cc folding exhibiting heterogeneous kinetics (in some cases) by utilizing a stretched exponential decay function.

Résumé :
Current research is revealing that stormwater can carry pathogens and that this stormwater is entering wastewater treatment facilities. During periods of intense rainfall, not only can stormwater carry higher amounts of pathogens, but it also increases the flow rate to the wastewater treatment facility. In many instances, the flow rate exceeds the facilities' treatment capacity and can impact treatment performance. The purpose of this study was to identify whether wastewater treatment is impaired during periods of increased rainfall, and to compare current policies that address this issue. The study was conducted using a case study approach to analyze historical precipitation and wastewater treatment data from facilities located in Clearwater and St. Petersburg, Florida. The effluent from the biological nutrient removal system operated at the facilities located in Clearwater was compared to the effluent from the activated sludge treatment system operated by the facility located in St. Petersburg. Statistical analyses were conducted to identify significant differences in either the loading or performance of wastewater treatment facilities under wet and dry flow conditions. In this case, the Clearwater facilities operating below their treatment capacity were better equipped to handle peak wet weather flows and efficiently treat wastewater than the St. Petersburg facility which has a less advanced treatment system and was operating at and above its treatment capacity.

Deady, Denis K. « Investigating proximate mechanisms and ultimate functions of memory for emotional events ». Thesis, University of Stirling, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/196.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis is an investigation of the proximate mechanisms and ultimate functions of memory for emotional events. The theoretical basis of this Thesis is that in order to reach a full understanding of a biological phenomenon, it is important that both proximate and ultimate (functional) explanations for that phenomenon are explored. Chapters 2 and 3 present an examination of the proximate mechanisms involved in memory consolidation of emotional events. In Chapter 2, three experiments are presented each testing the hypothesis that stress hormone activation immediately following viewing an emotional event enhances memory for that event. Each of the three experiments failed to find an enhancing effect of stress hormone activation on memory consolidation. Chapter 3 describes an investigation into whether the reduced feedback from the body to the brain, which occurs as a result of total spinal cord transection, diminishes the intensity of emotional experience and therefore impairs memory for emotional events. The results of this investigation revealed no differences between spinal cord transection patients and matched control participants in emotional expressivity, emotional awareness and in memory for emotional material. Chapters 4 and 5 explore how memory and emotion may interact differently for males and females and in manner that facilitates their survival and reproduction. Evolutionary theory argues that males should be more concerned than females about threats to their social status, whereas females should be more concerned about threats to their physical appearance and sexual reputation. Chapter 4 describes two experiments testing whether a) males have enhanced emotional arousal and memory for words implying they are of low social status; b) females have enhanced emotional arousal and memory for words implying they are physically unattractive and sexually untrustworthy. The results of these experiments showed that females had enhanced memory for words relating to physical appearance, and partial evidence that males have 2 enhanced memory for words relating to social status. Chapter 5 tests the evolutionary theory that males should be more emotionally aroused and thus have greater memory for cues relating to sexual infidelity (the thought of their partner having sex with another man), whereas females should be more emotionally aroused and have greater memory for cues to emotional infidelity (the thought of their partner forming a close emotional attachment with another woman). It also examines whether relationship status affects emotional arousal and memory for these cues. The results did not find any support for these hypothesised sex difference in memory. However, those ‘currently in a relationship’ did show enhanced emotional arousal to cues to sexual infidelity compared to those ‘currently not in a relationship’. Chapter 6 presents an investigation concerning the evolutionary hypothesis that individuals tend to have enhanced recognition memory for the faces of deceivers or ‘liars’. This chapter describes a study in which participants viewed a series of short video clips of individuals, half of whom were lying, half telling the truth. Participants’ memory for the individuals that appeared in the video clips was tested but there was no evidence of enhanced memory for the faces of ‘liars’. Chapter 7 provides a general discussion of the findings of this thesis. The failure to find an enhancing effect of post learning stress hormone activation on memory for emotional material, and the failure to find an impairment in memory for emotional material in people with total spinal cord transection contradict two established views on the proximate mechanisms involved in emotion, and emotions effect of the brain. How these findings relate to the established mainstream views on emotion and memory are discussed. The findings of studies concerning the functional interaction of memory and emotion presented in this thesis are also discussed in relation to previous research.

Résumé :
This research uses air pollution data, information about the locations of the air quality monitoring stations, and political events data from 2016 to 2017 to investigate the possible existence and characteristics of China’s routine short-term environmental policies aimed for ambient air quality. The results of multiple difference-in-difference suggest that air quality in the urban area, where ambient air pollution levels are usually higher due to population density, is lower on diplomatic events dates, while there is limited evidence that air quality is better in the urban area on domestic events dates. Therefore, this research reveals that there are short-term policies taking place on diplomatic events dates.

Résumé :
The concept of co-creation appeared in the business management literature thanks to the studies of Prahalad and Ramaswamy. It develops from the observation that people started to act as informed, empowered and active consumers. They have access to a larger amount of information with respect to the past, therefore they want to contribute to the creation of the company offerings. Value itself cannot be controlled solely by the company but it must be the result of an interaction between firms and customers. This interaction was enhanced thanks to the advent of social media, digital tool which permits to communicate, share and exchange information and other contents with a virtual community in an easy and fast way. Companies, recognizing the potential of such social networks, created their own social media pages in which they directly communicate with their consumers, provide them notices about the brand and capture ideas and opinions to improve their image. This dissertation analyzes the phenomenon of co-creation through the study of three music festivals. Organizers, through the festival social media pages, aim at extending the overall festival experience on the web, stimulating the sharing of fans’ own content. It has been noted that they directly encourage community to express preferences about artists or suggestions about the event creation, as well as looking for collaborators among the community members. Moreover, social media provides fans the opportunity to freely express themselves and contribute to create the value of the festival.

Résumé :

Terminal heme-copper oxidases (HCuOs) are transmembrane proteins that catalyze the final step in the respiratory chain - the reduction of O2 to H2O, coupled to energy conservation by generation of an electrochemical proton gradient. The most extensively investigated of the HCuOs are the aa3-type oxidases, to which cytochrome c oxidase (CytcO) belongs, which uses energy released in the O2-reduction for proton pumping. The bacterial nitric oxide reductases (NORs) have been identified as divergent members of the HCuO-superfamily and are involved in the denitrification pathway where they catalyze the reduction of NO to NO2. Although as exergonic as O2-reduction, this reaction is completely non-electrogenic. Among the traditional HCuOs, the cbb3-type oxidases are the closest relatives to the NORs and as such provide a link between the aa3 oxidases and the NORs. The cbb3 oxidases have been shown to pump protons with nearly the same efficiency as the aa3 oxidases, despite low sequence similarity.

This thesis is focused on measurements of membrane potential generating reactions during catalysis in the CytcO and the cbb3 oxidase from Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and the NOR from Paracoccus denitrificans, using a time resolved electrometric technique. The pH dependence of the membrane potential generation in CytcO showed that only one proton is taken up and that no protons are pumped, at high pH. An additional kinetic phase was also detected at high pH that presumably originates to from charge-transfer within the K-pathway. Possible reasons for uncoupling, and the extent of charge-transfer, were studied using structural variants of CytcO. The measurements established that electrons and protons are taken up from the same side of the membrane in NOR. In addition, the directionality for proton uptake in cbb3 oxidase appeared to be dependent on the choice of substrate while proton pumping was indicated to occur only during O2-reduction.

Résumé :
Earthquake catalogues are usually dominated by diffusive behaviour consistent with the Omori law of aftershocks. This is investigated in terms of waiting times, i.e. the time between successive events in a time-sorted earthquake catalogue. The theoretical waiting time probability distribution for the Omori law is derived and shown to predict the numerically produced Omori aftershock sequence well. These results enhance our understanding of aftershock processes and demonstrate that previous waiting time interpretations were severely flawed. Iceland earthquake catalogues are studied in terms of waiting times. Omori aftershock sequences are shown to predict most datasets well but there are some significant exceptions. One of these is data from the glacier covered Katla volcano in South Iceland, with few aftershocks. This dataset can be further split into two geographical groups: Several hundred volcano-tectonic earthquakes occurring within the caldera, reaching depths down to 15 km, and thousands of emergent low frequency earthquakes with a poorly defined shallow source in Goðabunga, in the western part of Katla. These events are investigated further. The lp events at Goðabunga have been recorded for decades and show a clear seasonal and climate-related correlation where their number increases in the autumn as well as during warmer years. Many of them form groups with very with similar waveforms. New broad-band seismic data suggests that the lp events originate in a steep outlet glacier covering Katla. Here, ice movement leads to ice falls over the steep escarpment, and we now believe that the lp events are generated by large ice falls rather than being related to gas or magma movements within the volcano, and are not precursors to an eruption as previously suspected. This observation probably has major significance for hazard estimation at the many ice-covered volcanoes around the world. We report near-field (vlp) signals simultaneous with the largest lp events. Our data is partly consistent in character with surface deformation (displacement and tilt) due to the ice movements. However, in line with results from elsewhere, the magnitudes of the observed effects are large relative to those from mathematical modelling. Our analysis suggests that the signal is not an instrumental artefact. Possible explanations are discussed.

Résumé :
The determination of the timing of impact events and the ages of cratered planetary surfaces is a complex and challenging undertaking. A powerful approach to this endeavor is a multidisciplinary study; understanding and using data from both rock samples and remote sensing. Shocked material (especially melt material) found in meteorites like Orvinio provides critical material dating impact craters. Orvinio, in spite of a complex degassing history shows evidence for multiple impacts at 4.2 Ga, 7.5 Ma, and possibly 330 Ma. Correlating impact histories for inner solar system bodies and the asteroid belt will constrain the genesis of impactor populations. Determining the recent cratering history of the Earth, however, is complicated by surface processes which erode and destroy impact craters. The Gardnos impact structure, for example, while possessing samples suitable for dating, has suffered substantial post-impact degassing due to metamorphism in the Caledonian orogeny ∼385 Ma. We must therefore look to the Moon to unravel the recent cratering history of the Earth-Moon system The Clementine mission data set provides an excellent resource for research into the bright rayed craters on the lunar surface. Studies of large rayed craters using the OMAT (optical maturity parameter) technique of Lucey and colleagues has revealed much information on the maturation of the crater ejecta. Profiles of OMAT values for the ejecta of large craters as a group show no evidence for an increase in the cratering rate during the Copernican era as advocated by Shoemaker. Future studies of both remote sensing and sample data will allow a better understanding of meteorite parent body impact histories and their implications for widespread epochs of increased impactor flux; the age-size correlation in lunar craters; the calibration of a large crater relative age scheme based on optical maturity with implications for the nature of the impactor flux in recent history; the nature of the recent small impactors on the lunar surface; implications for impact hazards on Earth today; and the best target sites for future landings and sample acquisition on the lunar surface.

Nguyen, Tina. « Integrating sustainability thinking and practices into surfing events : case studies in Hawaii and Jeffreys Bay ». Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/28058.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Sustainable surfing events are a recent phenomenon and there is little to no academic literature reflecting this development. Sustainable event management (SEM) is the integration of sustainability principles and practices into event production to produce an event that goes beyond economic longevity and fulfils important social, cultural, and environmental roles that people value. This research explores the current practices and issues surrounding the implementation of SEM into surfing events held in Hawaii, USA and in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. The thesis follows a qualitative case study approach using semi-structured interviews, participant observation and documentary evidence. Findings demonstrated that the key obstacles to implementing sustainable event management principles and practices include limited access to capital, lack of government support, resistance to change, the absence of a common vision, and a lack of education and awareness. This study revealed the importance of context in a hosting community's journey towards sustainable event production. Overcoming these obstacles requires engagement of the private sector, influence of local champions, involvement of NGOs, trusting relationships between local and external event stakeholders, access to technology and resources, and the strategic use of media to promote sustainability awareness to all event stakeholders. Based on these findings, recommendations for improving the sustainability performance of surfing events include the development of a formal policy, education and training for event staff, a media campaign focused on sustainability issues, and in-depth engagement with the local hosting community. How the enabling or inhibiting factors play out on the ground depends on the variety of factors previously highlighted. In practice, there are linkages across SEM practices and many work in concert to enhance the overall sustainability performance. Theoretically, the implications of this research lie in its contribution to a growing body of knowledge pertaining to the surfing industry's transition towards more sustainable business operations. Practically, this information can be used to inform policy, set goals, carefully examine alternatives, establish effective factors to enable SEM, and encourage sustainable decision-making and actions. Other surfing communities can learn from the experiences of the event stakeholders in Hawaii and Jeffreys Bay to improve their efforts of hosting a sustainable surfing event. Overall, this knowledge can promote a more balanced dissemination of sustainability thinking and practices within the global surfing events sector.
