Texte intégralIn the current context of the reduction of pesticide use, soilborne pests and diseases, and especially the fungi Sclerotinia and the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne, become more and more worrying in vegetable production under shelter in Southern France. Alternative techniques exist, but their partial and varying efficiencies require the search for new strategies of management of these pests and diseases fit for producers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the benefit of combinations of two techniques, soil solarisation and green manure (Sorghum sudanense). It is also to determine the influences of crop successions and frequences of these techniques on their individual efficiencies. To this effect, a setup of producers' plots has been designed. The spatiotemporal evolution of incidences and severities of Sclerotinia and Meloidogyne in several cropping systems has been observed on this setup. The presence of a melon crop has a major influence on the efficiency of the alternative techniques. Opposite effects for the two considered pests and diseases appeared. Crops successions with melon are most favourable to highest infestations of Meloidogyne whereas, Sclerotinia infections are reduced. For this pathogen, a solarisation every year or every two years ensures the most effective control. On the contrary, in the case of Meloidogyne, the melon crop is very sensitive to this pest, a characteristic that masks the positive effects of alternative techniques

Texte intégralAmidst a backdrop of socio-ecological crisis that raises questions about the capacity of industrial agriculture to ensure food security and quality food, agroecology has emerged as an increasingly credible alternative. A pivotal aspect of agroecology is the reintroduction of cultivated biodiversity into agri-food systems. This thesis focuses on three marginal wheat species, known as "hulled wheats" : einkorn, emmer, and spelt. It aims to assess their agronomic viability, as well as their nutritional quality, with a specific focus on the composition of gluten proteins. Situated in the Lyon region, this research embraces a participatory approach, aligning with two core principles of agroecology : the relocalization of food systems and the breaking down of barriers between research and the wider community. During this thesis, we evaluated 23 hulled wheat varieties, in comparison with eight common wheat varieties. This work was done in collaboration with a botanical resource center, a farmers’ association, and six farmers. The results show that einkorn clearly differs from the other three species, in terms of agronomic features and gluten composition. In particular, einkorn is characterized by an elevated tillering potential, a high protein content, and a notably low proportion of glutenins. The study also revealed high levels of intra-specific variability, particularly within the set of emmer varieties, which highlights the value of these species as a source of diversity. Finally, the evaluation undertaken during this thesis enabled us to identify varieties with noteworthy characteristics, either agronomically or in relation to gluten protein composition. Beyond the results of the variety evaluation, this thesis provides a reflective analysis of the participatory research process, identifying its strengths and limitations, and presenting recommendations for its improvement. In conclusion, this thesis lays the groundwork for the continuation of the hulled wheat evaluation project, encompassing both the evaluation methodology and the participatory approach

Texte intégralAgricultural production is evolving towards systems able to provide multiple objectives in order tosatisfy the complex concerns related to sustainability, therefore leading agricultural research to bear growing interest in the development of methodologies to allow the design and assessment of innovative cropping and farming systems able to fulfil these constraints. Although the number and the diversity of tools and concepts are increasing, only few transdisciplinary research have been done, therefore limiting the development of methodologies for integrated assessment from the design to the adoption of innovations by farmers. The objective of this thesis is to propose a trandisciplinary method for ex ante assessment of innovative cropping systems in order to palliate this shortcoming in the current research. After a survey of available assessment methodologies, we propose an original method which is made of a four-step approach: i) modelling farm diversity and prototyping innovative cropping systems, ii) use of a crop model to simulate the biophysical impacts of innovations for the different farm types, iii) development of a bio-economic farm model for assessment of the impacts of the adoption of innovations at farm level, and iv) econometric modelling of adoption by farmers. The method was then applied to the design and assessment of innovative cropping systems for banana production in the French West Indies, that are currently facing severe economic and environmental crisis. The first step led to the identification of six contrasting farm types and sixteen cropping systems prototypes, invoving rotation of banana with cover crop, intercropping, and regulation of pesticide use. The second step showed that the performances of innovation may differ greatly among fram types, and some systems appear to be promising from both agronomic and environmental critera. However simulations made in step 3 and 4 showed that promising innovations at field level maight have negative impacts at farm level while some promising innovation have low probability of adoption. Results of econometric model and bio-economic simulations made possible to define a set of proposals for local research and development stakeholders in order to improve the likelihood of adoption of the innovations. In the last chapter we present a critical analysis of the advantages and shortcomings of our approach underling the genericity of the methodology, and the potential extension of its application to other context, for better matching the innovations with society and farmers demands

Texte intégralAnaerobic digestion, a renewal energy process, constitutes an undeniable asset of material and energy flows recovering in response to sustainable development issues. Thus, the aim of this current study was to contribute to the understanding of mechanisms that govern the reactive environment of anaerobic digestion and the effects of digestates on the biophysico- chemical matrix of agricultural soils sector. The running of leaching tests in aerobic and anaerobic controlled reactors, organo-mineral mobilizations patterns of the substrates and the valorization of biogas in slaughtered animals knackering have been realized. The physicochemical and technical locks tarnishing the pineapple wastes anaerobic digestion have been lifted and optimized through the co-substrates including cattle manure and ashes. The digestates have been brought on agricultural soils, forests areas soils and medium free of organic matter and clays and allowed to detect the limits of digestates uses and the interactions with organic and mineral fractions of soils. This study, thus show, the importance to develop the anaerobic digestion sector for a sustainable removal of organic wastes

Texte intégralThe observation that the quality of wine takes its origin in the vineyard is well rooted in the European culture. In this way, the viticultural zoning allows to characterize and to develop the 'Terroir'-based products also considering the recent increased consumers' attention on functional foods (that combine nutritional and healthy properties due to the high concentration of bioactive compounds as vitamins and phenols). Therefore, this study aims at identifying viticultural areas which can maximize the concentration of stilbenes in the wine using a 'Terroir' approach. We have considered fourteen vineyards of Cabernet franc in Saumurois-Touraine (France) and fourteen vineyards of Sangiovese in Romagna (Italy). The characterization of 'terroir' was carried out over three years in France (2003-2005) and over two years in Italy (2008-2009) along with determination of wine stilbene concentration. Five UTB (Terroir-based Unit) were identified in Saumurois-Touraine and three in Romagna. 'Terroir' significantly affected the metabolism of stilbenes and the level of trans-resveratrol in Saumurois-Touraine was influenced for 58% by 'Terroir'. The effect of the year (climate) was dominant whereas the effect of soil and sub-soil was secondary to climate. The vineyard elevation and the active-lime in the soil enhanced resveratrol content in wines. The soil texture affected the stilbene metabolism so the clayiest soil increased their wine concentration

Texte intégralSoil nutrient depletion and water deficit as a result of seasons’ disruption are major factors adversely affecting crop yields in West Africa. To remedy this, the amendment of compost-based soil is often considered. In this study, Five composts were elaborated using household waste and agri-food waste, manure and phosphate: composts C1 (household waste + agri-food waste), C2 (C1 + manure), C3 (C1 + natural phosphate), C4 (C1 + manure + natural phosphate) and C5 (agri-food waste). These composts were first characterized and their effects on an acidic soil and on two crops (corn and tomato) were then investigated in greenhouse and field under two water regimes in the goal to identify the best's ones in improving resistance of the two crops to watering reducing, applied prior flowering. The results showed for C4 and C5 high contents of phosphorus, about 1.62% compared to 0.09% for the C1 compost. Composts C3 and C4 showed the highest levels of calcium, about 3.9% compared to 1.2% for the C1 compost while composts C4 and C1 were more hydrophobic than all other composts. Plants of corn grown under constant irrigation on soil amended with compost C4 and C5 in greenhouse showed high nitrogen and potassium contents, respectively 2.55% and 6.69% compared to 1.33% and 3.97 % of the control plants and those grown on synthetic fertilizers. Under reduced watering, we recorded higher potassium and calcium contents in plants grown on all of the five composts compared to control plants. In field, under reduced watering, composts C4 and C5 were those leading corn plants to maintain physiological parameters levels (low cell membrane permeability and high total chlorophyll) compared to well –watered plants. We also recorded for both composts the same grain yields in plants submitted to two water regimes, respectively 5.52t/ha and 6.72t/ha for C4 and C5 in well-watered plants and 5.65t/ha and 5.09t/ha for C4 and C5 in plants grown under low water regime. In tomato, an increased weight of fruit per plant was recorded in C3 compost plants under reduced-watering compared to those well-watered (95.93g compared to 44.29g) while in the same conditions, the compost C5 was the best for the number of fruits per plant (7.39 against 4.26). These data indicated that the three composts C3, C4 and C5 were the most efficient in this study and may be retained in adaptation programs of two crops to climate change for a sustainable development

The orange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin), a common pest of wheat throughout the northern hemisphere, is known for two centuries but remains difficult to control due to its discrete behavior and its highly variable population level.
In general, the infestation levels in Wallonia (Belgium) are low, although levels could locally exceed worrying thresholds.
In the early 2000s, the sexual pheromone of S. mosellana has been identified in Canada. This discovery has led to the manufacturing of traps which have greatly improved the detection of this tiny insect. From 2007 to 2010 in Wallonia, S. mosellana captures have been daily registered in about 20 fields with different cropping histories and grown with different crops.
Insect captures by pheromone traps were numerous. Relation between amount of captures and risk measurement has been studied. As expected, only the males are attracted by the pheromone and the risk of ears infestation is mainly related to the presence of females. The correct interpretation of captures in pheromone traps has been established by the observation of fundamental differences between males and females concerning their mobility and their spatial distribution.
Despite the fact that pheromone traps are not real emergence traps, they have led to new information on adult emergence indicating that several emergence waves can be consecutive during the same year.
Forecasting the emergence of the adult orange wheat blossom midge is a key element on pest management. Insecticides treatments are sometimes justified when the egg laying period of the insect coincides with ear emergence of wheat. Emergence patterns established from captures of pheromone traps have been compared with the forecast of several models built in Europe or North America. These forecasting models were used with the meteorological data observed from 2007 until 2010. None of the six tested models provided a reliable forecast across the four years of our study.
Emergence data from catches in pheromone traps were very accurate because the number of catches were high and were taken each day. This emergence data showed a relation between emergence waves and rainfalls occurring during the preceding 3 to 6 weeks. The lag between inductive rain and emergence wave is constant in terms of temperature accumulation: it is equivalent to 160 degree–days above 7°C. This discovery, combined with experience from previous models, was incorporated into a new forecasting model.
In addition, the present work has also revealed the existence of a common bias in variety evaluation trials leading sometime to the concentration of the eggs in the earliest earing variety. In the current evaluation system, this bias leads to a sub-evaluation of the yield for the most precocious varieties.
Finally, the discovery of the inductive rain for adult emergence has been used in the screening for resistant varieties to S. mosellana by providing adults during the complete duration of the test. This application of the model allows to measure, under controlled conditions, the level of resistance of all varieties (early and late heading varieties) which are exposed homogeneously to the insect.
In total, this study has contributed to a better understanding of the orange wheat blossom midge and provides some new tools in the management of this pest.

Texte intégralThe biorefinery concept, developed to face fossil resources dependence, aims to design a wide variety of products (biofuels, materials, chemicals ...) based on the development of renewable resources such as plant biomass. The establishment of biorefineries must be based on ecodesigned processes to optimize the environmental performance of the biomass processing chain. Nevertheless, eco-designing innovative processes can be complex due to multiple configurations and the lack of related specific and reliable data. Thereby, the aim of this research work is to develop a multi-indicator evaluation method for the eco-design of agro-industrial and biorefinery processes. The general approach is based on coupling Process Engineering and Life Cycle Assessment fields. Indeed, process modeling, based on mathematical or semi-empirical models (notably resulting from designs of experiments) and process simulation are applied to facilitate the life cycle inventory step by predicting detailed mass and energy balances. Then these data can be used to perform a prospective Life Cycle Assessment of the process. By iteration, it is possible perform data prediction and to test several operating conditions sets for the process, to enhance its environmental performance, by determining optimal operating conditions and by identifying the most environmentally friendly unit operations. The methodology and its associated tool have been tested on different biorefinery processes, involving various biomasses: micro-algae, wheat coproducts and wood
