RIBEIRO, VIEIRA LIMA MARCO ANTONIO.

Texte intégralAn economy on the rise, low unemployment, multiple social and economic policies paved the way for the upward mobility of dozens of millions during the 2000s in Brazil – one of the most unequal countries in the world. Economists, journalists, politicians and marketers heralded the end of endemic poverty and the incorporation of this population into a newly defined “middle class”. Drawing from a three year long, multi-level ethnographic research conducted in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Porto Alegre and Washington D.C., this dissertation problematizes the political, economic and subjective assemblages under which upward mobility unfolded amongst poor Brazilians. Empirically, it focuses on the design and implementation of the federal housing program “My House, My Life”. Unraveling the interactions between grassroots politicians, salespersons, architects, public planners, community leaders and first-time homeowners, ethnography traverses and breaks through the new social, political and economic formations of present-day Brazil. Based on fieldwork with an association of future residents of one these subsidized housing units, the dissertation foregrounds people’s resilience and work for citizenship, as they find ways to publicly document their precariousness. Brokering inclusions and exclusions from the housing policy, the association and its local leaders unleashed moral economies of worthiness that coalesced with people’s desire for lives beyond poverty. By concocting new “imaginative horizons” mapped onto the built environment and the consumption of the house, beneficiaries weaved together individual and collective “becomings” that crystallize into cartographies of hope – new openings intermingling with the urban fabric. The ethnographic artefact of such controversial and transient alignments between desiring citizens, local instances of governance, and public policies continuously leaks out of the hegemonic language of “middle class”, questioning contemporary boundaries and juxtapositions of citizenship, consumption, poverty, democracy and market inclusion in Brazil’s upward mobility.

This dissertation is the result of na anthropological investigation about the practices and representation of children who live in the neighbourhood of Porto do Sal, Belém – Pará. Ethnography, as result of long-term observation and the use of photography are the main tools by which games, understood as social practices, are analysed.

Texte intégralNetworks of African-Brazilian religious agents allow the movement of people, objects, and actions between Brazil and countries abroad. Resourcing to ethnographic descriptions of contacts made with fathers-of-saints [pais-desanto] between 2005 and 2010 in Porto Alegre (BR); Santana do Livramento (BR) – Rivera (UY); Montevideo (UY) and surroundings; Buenos Aires (AR), some cities of its province and suburbs, this thesis follows the actors in their cross-border transits and in their relations with the encompassing societies in each city. A shared African-religious structure in the Southern Cone of South America can be described through analysis and interpretation of anthropological data. At the same time, each case displays local diversifications of the codes of Africanoriented religious thought. These "structural deviations" in African-Brazilian religiosity vary with two other belongings: nationality and ethnic identity. In addition, the distribution of ritual roles by gender and sexual option appears as an important element in the broader African-Brazilian religious scenes. It is because these cities relate to each other through their networks of religious agents, in the past and present, that the tension between continuity and differentiation in the African-Brazilian religious structures builds on. It is concluded that this is a transnational phenomenon, since the nation-State, the pluri-ethnic social organization under its aegis, the discourses and the identities it mobilizes, act upon the modes of appropriation, maintenance, and expression of African-Brazilian forms and contents.

Texte intégralThe aim of this research is to comprehend the university class in its multiple determinations, mediations, contradictions, and dimensions, especially for it setting up as the privileged space-time of educational process\' realization at the university and for being a relatively naturalized object by individuals of the field of university pedagogy, which has being constituted as a field of practice, formation and research on teaching in higher education. Insofar as this field has built its trajectory on a tendentiously reformist direction, it was identified the need to know and propose components for boosting a humanizing, critical and revolutionary pedagogical praxis. Therefore, it was used an ethnographic research based on historical materialism. Data collection took place in five disciplines, one in each of the five selected undergraduate courses (Licentiate Degree in Physics, Civil Engineering, Pedagogy, Architecture and Urban Design, Plastic Arts) at the University of São Paulo, with a total of 240 hours of classroom observations and interviews. Fieldwork highlighted class as a complex, dynamic and contradictory phenomenon and submitted, among other things, to institutional bureaucracy, to fragmented curriculum, to capital pressures, to different demands of the students, to different pedagogical intentionalities, to reified organization of space and time, to precarious teaching work conditions, to naturalization of the forms of production and mobilization of bodies and affects in educational process, and to (un)meetings of the subjects of this process and their trajectories. Based on the discussion of the data, it was realized that, within the educational process, teachers and students need to establish: mediated and non-daily relations with scientific knowledge; otherness; qualitative relations in and with time and space; and transgressive body relations. From this, it has listed four components for boosting a humanizing, critical, and revolutionary pedagogical praxis: critical, alterity, creativity, affectivity. It was concluded that beyond the need to build a larger movement that intends to establish a new hegemony in university and higher education as a whole, it would be up to the individuals of the university pedagogy field, in its circumscribed sphere of action, to act inspired by the four listed elements, especially in class, where, despite all the constraints, there are still possibilities for the exercise of teaching autonomy.
