Résumé :
This research investigates the literary corpus of Shashi Deshpande, employing a qualitative and analytical approach. The primary focus lies on seven of her novels: "That Long Silence," "The Dark Holds No Terrors," "Roots and Shadows," "A Matter of Time," "The Binding Vine," "Little Remedies," and "Moving On." These works serve as the foundation for an examination of themes within contemporary Indian society, specifically with the aim of examining how her novels depict the interplay between literary realism, social dynamics, and the evolving nature of the family unit. The research is further enriched by consulting secondary sources, including scholarly articles and books, to provide a comprehensive context. Deshpande's portrayal extends beyond mere social critique. The study delves into how she addresses the challenges faced by women and children within the family structure, without advocating for its dismantling. By integrating Max Weber's perspectives on modernity within the Indian context, the research seeks to illuminate the internal struggles of her characters as they navigate the tensions between tradition and progress. The analysis reveals a critical exploration of persistent societal issues in India. Deshpande's characters serve as conduits to highlight often-overlooked societal problems, actively seeking solutions within a framework that acknowledges both cultural heritage and individual agency. Notably, a thematic shift is observed across Deshpande's works. Her earlier novels tend to focus on gender and the quest for personal autonomy, while her later tetralogy explores the transcendence of societal limitations by characters who strive to build strong and enduring familial foundations. By analyzing these trends, the study identifies common obstacles faced by urban middle-class families in India. Ultimately, it argues for the necessity of dismantling structures of injustice and oppression as a crucial step towards achieving a more just and equitable modern society. Furthermore, the research posits the creation of new social frameworks that dismantle traditional barriers and foster social cohesion as a potential path towards progress.

Résumé :
Competing demands between various sectors of water users such as agriculture, industry, urban and domestic use have put enormous pressure on the fresh water availability in India. Some investigations have shown that the per capita availability of water has gone down drastically in the last few decades. Yet, there is a little evidence to show that measures are being drawn up either to augment fresh water resources or to manage existing resource equitably. The reasons usually cited for the decline of water availability are deforestation, intensive water use in agriculture, growing population etc. Remedies must therefore be addressed to all these issues. However, there is an urgent need to look at the opportunities available in a country which is said to have had a riverine civilization and one which has the blessings of intensive precipitation during the monsoon months. Thus, on the one hand there are enormous possibilities available in rationalising water use in the agriculture sector, recycling water for industrial use and harnessing monsoon precipitation through water harvesting on a very large scale. It is also necessary to look at some of the policy aspects, legal aspects and financial aspects of water management. For instance, it needs to be asked whether official policy of conjunctive use of surface and ground water is being followed adequately. Also it needs to be asked whether, given that water is a State subject, there is adequate coordination among the States in order to facilitate optimalities in water use. In this context, it may be useful to re-evaluate all the existing inter-State water agreements which were drawn up several decades ago. Further, it needs to be investigated whether the moneys being spent on different aspects of water management such as inter-basin transfers, dam and canal construction, ground water management etc. are being done in a manner that is economically justifiable. Simultaneously, the existing fiscal mechanism in relation to water use should also be reexamined to see the future scope of making water use economically viable.

Résumé :
Wrongful convictions have increasingly plagued the Indian criminal justice system. Instances of innocent individuals being wrongfully prosecuted suggest that some states witness convictions at trial stages, only for the accused to be acquitted upon appeal. However, there is no established system for identifying or tracking individuals wrongfully convicted, as state officials do not maintain records of acquittals or discharges. This lack of oversight perpetuates erroneous miscarriages of justice, resulting in innocent individuals not only losing their rights but also facing social alienation. This study examines the phenomenon of wrongful convictions in India, exploring its causes, consequences, and potential solutions. Drawing upon legal analysis and case laws, this study identifies various factors contributing to wrongful convictions, including flawed investigation procedures, police misconduct, inadequate legal representation, and systemic issues within the criminal justice system. Furthermore, it highlights the social, psychological, and economic tolls experienced by wrongfully convicted individuals and their families. The study also discusses the challenges faced in rectifying wrongful convictions and proposes a range of reforms aimed at preventing future injustices, such as improving investigation techniques, enhancing legal aid services, strengthening judicial oversight, and promoting public awareness and advocacy. By addressing the root causes of wrongful convictions and implementing systemic reforms, India can strive towards a more equitable and just legal system that upholds the rights and dignity of all individuals. In addition the purpose of this study to find out what approaches the state utilizes to resolve this issue of wrongful conviction and also aims to emphasize what are the remedies already available under existing laws and also to underline the need of standard legal framework for looking compensations to victims of wrongful convictions.

Résumé :
The contributors to this special issue have demonstrated the potency and promise of cultivating Alternate Cultural Paradigms (ACPs) in psychology that reflect and express the lived realities of non-White communities in America. Based on my past research engagement with several distinct American Indian and First Nations communities, I offer for consideration four principles for psychologists who seek to further cultivate ACPs: (a) attend independently to culture and power, (b) anchor conceptual abstractions in empirical examples, (c) complicate stock oppositions and essentialisms, and (d) integrate emancipation with application. Adoption of these four principles should assist with the development of robust ACPs that accurately reflect the lived experiences of non-White communities. The promotion of these in psychology represents the exciting possibility for a more just and equitable future in which the injuries of White racism are remedied and all Americans are granted equal opportunities to live and thrive in self-determined fashion.
